The dragonfly Hemicordulia tau has five spectral classes of photoreceptor which drive five lamina monopolars, m1-m5. The monopolars encode spectral information. Here, spectral coding by m2, m4 and m5 are described. m2 is the most sensitive to dim light. m4 and m5 are less sensitive than m2, and so we call them photopic cells. The effects of selective adaptation of receptor inputs to m4 and m5 are unusual. For example, in m4 adaptation of the green receptor suppresses the UV input, but green sensitivity is unaffected, while green adaptation of m5 increases its green sensitivity. In m5 the dark adapted spectral tuning resembles the 520 nm receptor, but on adaptation to 430 nm light this narrows markedly. Adaptation either of green or of UV receptor input to m2 and m4 modifies the time course of responses both to green and to UV, implying that changes in the time courses of monopolar responses with adaptation state do not directly reflect receptor responses (Fig. 2). Background

We study the adaptation of Link Grammar Parser to the biomedical sublanguage with a focus on domain terms not found in a general parser lexicon. Using two biomedical corpora, we implement and evaluate three approaches to addressing unknown words: automatic lexicon expansion, the use of morphological clues, and disambiguation using a part-of-speech tagger. We evaluate each approach separately for its effect on parsing performance and consider combinations of these approaches.

Results

In addition to a 45% increase in parsing efficiency, we find that the best approach, incorporating information from a domain part-of-speech tagger, offers a statistically significant 10% relative decrease in error.

Conclusion

When available, a high-quality domain part-of-speech tagger is the best solution to unknown word issues in the domain adaptation of a general parser. In the absence of such a resource, surface clues can provide remarkably good coverage and performance when tuned to the domain. The adapted parser is available under an open-source license.

Background and AimsThe persistence of a plant population under a specific local climatic regime requires phenotypic adaptation with underlying particular combinations of alleles at adaptive loci. The level of allele diversity at adaptive loci within a natural plant population conditions its potential to evolve, notably towards adaptation to a change in climate. Investigating the environmental factors that contribute to the maintenance of adaptive diversity in populations is thus worthwhile. Within-population allele diversity at adaptive loci can be partly driven by the mean climate at the population site but also by its temporal variability.MethodsThe effects of climate temporal mean and variability on within-population allele diversity at putatively adaptive quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were evaluated using 385 natural populations of Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) collected right across Europe. For seven adaptive traits related to reproductive phenology and vegetative potential growth seasonality, the average within-population allele diversity at major QTLs (HeA) was computed.Key ResultsSignificant relationships were found between HeA of these traits and the temporal mean and variability of the local climate. These relationships were consistent with functional ecology theory.ConclusionsResults indicated that temporal variability of local climate has likely led to fluctuating directional selection, which has contributed to the maintenance of allele diversity at adaptive loci and thus potential for further adaptation.  相似文献

Background/purposeIntensity-modulated proton therapy is highly sensitive to anatomical variations. A dose restoration method and a full plan adaptation method have been developed earlier, both requiring several parameter settings. This study evaluates the validity of the previously selected settings by systematically comparing them to alternatives.Materials/methodsThe dose restoration method takes a prior plan and uses an energy-adaptation followed by a spot-intensity re-optimization to restore the plan to its initial state. The full adaptation method uses an energy-adaptation followed by the addition of new spots and a spot-intensity optimization to fit the new anatomy. We varied: 1) The margins and robustness settings of the prior plan, 2) the spot-addition sample size, i.e. the number of added spots, 3) the spot-addition stopping criterion, and 4) the spot-intensity optimization approach. The last three were evaluated only for the full plan adaptation. Evaluations were done on 88 CT scans of 11 prostate cancer patients. Dose was prescribed as 55 Gy(RBE) to the lymph nodes and seminal vesicles with a boost to 74 Gy(RBE) to the prostate.ResultsFor the dose restoration method, changing the applied CTV-to-PTV margins and plan robustness in the prior plans yielded insufficient target coverage or increased OAR doses. For the full plan adaptation, more spot-addition iterations and using a different optimization approach resulted in lower OAR doses compared to the default settings while maintaining target coverage. However, the calculation times increased by up to 20 times, making these variations infeasible for online-adaptation.ConclusionWe recommend maintaining the default setting for the dose restoration approach. For the full plan adaptation we recommend to focus on fine-tuning the optimization-parameters, and apart from this using the default settings.  相似文献

Abstract

Magnitude estimates of the tactile roughness of raised-dot surfaces revealed that perceived overall roughness, defined as the combination of the perceived roughness of the dot pattern and the perceived roughness of the individual dots in the pattern, is an inverted U-shaped function of dot spacing, reaching a maximum at approximately 3.0?mm of dot separation. The hypothesis that Pacinian corpuscles are involved in roughness perception has been supported by the finding that selective adaptation of the Pacinian corpuscle (PC) channel with a 250-Hz stimulus at 20-dB SL results in a decrease in the perceived overall roughness of the raised-dot surface at the fingertip. The effect of PC channel adaptation on perceived overall roughness was attributable entirely to a reduction in the perceived roughness of the individual raised dots; PC adaptation had no effect on the perceived roughness of the raised-dot pattern. Selective adaptation of the slowly adapting type I (SA I) channel with a 5-Hz stimulus at 20-dB SL had the opposite effect of PC channel adaptation and resulted in an increase in the perceived roughness of the individual raised dots, and consequently the perceived overall roughness of the raised-dot surface. As was the case with PC channel adaptation, SA I channel adaptation had no effect on the perceived roughness of the pattern. Adaptation with a compound adapting stimulus containing 5- and 250-Hz components at 20-dB SL had no effect on perceived overall roughness, which suggests that the PC and SA I channels operate antagonistically in an opponent-process fashion in the perception of the microstructure of a textured surface. Neither PC adaptation nor SA I adaptation affected perceived pattern roughness, which suggests that pattern roughness is coded by relative rather than by absolute spatial variation in firing rate.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Hierarchical Factor Segmentation (HFS) method is a non-parametric statistical method for detection of the phase of a biological rhythm shown in an actogram. The detection accuracy of this method was measured on actograms showing only circadian rhythms with a constant ratio of signal to noise (S/N). In the present study, we generated 84 types of artificial actograms including circadian or circatidal rhythms by using three parameters: α/ρ, S/N and period length τ, and evaluated the effectiveness of our devised adaptation of the HFS method, the cycle-by-cycle adaptation. The results showed the effectiveness of the cycle-by-cycle adaptation was high even though S/N or τ was fluctuating through a whole actogram. These suggested that the cycle-by-cycle adaptation could be effectively applied to various kinds of rhythmic activity data. Background: In tundra ecosystems, the adjustment of phenological events, such as bud burst, to snowmelt timing is crucial to the climatic adaptation of plants. Natural small-scale variations in microclimate potentially enable plant populations to persist in a changing climate.

Aims: To assess how plant phenology responds to natural differences in snowmelt timing.

Methods: We observed the timing of eight vegetative and reproductive phenophases in seven dwarf-shrub species in relation to differences in snowmelt timing on a small spatial scale in an alpine environment in subarctic Finland.

Results: Some species and phenophases showed accelerated development with later snowmelt, thus providing full or partial compensation for the shorter snow-free period. Full compensation resulted in synchronous occurrence of phenophases across the snowmelt gradient. In other species, there was no acceleration of development. The timing of phenophases varied between two consecutive years and two opposing mountain slope aspects.

Conclusions: The results have shown three distinct patterns in the timing of phenophases in relation to snowmelt and suggest alternative strategies for adaptation to snowmelt timing. These strategies potentially apply to other species and tundra ecosystems and provide a framework, enabling one to compare and generalise phenological responses to snowmelt timing under different future climate scenarios.  相似文献

The genetic variance–covariance matrix (G) has long been considered to summarize the genetic constraints biasing evolution in its early stages, although in some instances, G can enhance divergence and facilitate adaptation. However, the effects of G on the response to selection might be of less importance than previously thought. In addition, it has been suggested that selection itself, under certain conditions, might rapidly alter the genetic covariance structure. If selection can indeed affect the stability of G to facilitate evolution, the overall structure of G might not be as important to consider as the past selective conditions that G was subject to. Thus, more empirical work is needed on the stability of G in the early stages of divergence before one can really assess to what extent G constrains evolution.  相似文献

Purpose

Life cycle management (LCM) implies a specific sustainability perspective which extends environmental management along the product life cycle, with the aim of decreasing negative environmental impact throughout the product chain. Research has identified that the adoption of LCM in the industry depends upon its situational adaptation to the organizational context. Even so, little is known about the specifics of this adaptation. With this paper, our aim is to add knowledge on LCM adoption and adaptation.

Methods

A systematic analysis of empirical material on life cycle (LC) activity in six multinational corporations (MNCs) is conducted, by applying a secondary analysis of qualitative data (Heaton 2008). In order to study instances of LCM adoption and adaptation, we focus on the acts and situations of LC promoters. The identified instances are analyzed through the lens of situated problem-solving (Kuhn and Jackson 2008).

Results and discussion

Sixty-seven instances of LC promotion were identified and analyzed, resulting in the identification of eight categories of problem-situations typically encountered by LC promoters. The identified problem-situations represent different situations when the organizational appropriateness of the LC approach is at stake and to which responses tailored to the organization are put forward by a LC promoter. The results bring to the fore the ubiquity of organizational and creative problem-solving, highlighting the role of LC promoters as change agents for LCM adoption, and depict the development of LCM as an emergent practice, rather than an implementation process.

Conclusions

This paper provides a first systematic analysis of LC promoters enacting a variety of responses to organizationally challenging LC situations, thus detailing the adaptation necessary for embedding LCM in the industry. Findings show that the development of LCM to a great extent is about the promotion of a LC approach, and that LC promoters need organizational knowing, in addition to LC knowing, to make the LC approach relevant to management and business.

Background and AimsTraditionally, local adaptation has been seen as the outcome of a long evolutionary history, particularly with regard to sexual lineages. By contrast, phenotypic plasticity has been thought to be most important during the initial stages of population establishment and in asexual species. We evaluated the roles of adaptive evolution and phenotypic plasticity in the invasive success of two closely related species of invasive monkeyflowers (Mimulus) in the UK that have contrasting reproductive strategies: M. guttatus combines sexual (seeds) and asexual (clonal growth) reproduction while M. × robertsii is entirely asexual.MethodsWe compared the clonality (number of stolons), floral and vegetative phenotype, and phenotypic plasticity of native (M. guttatus) and invasive (M. guttatus and M. × robertsii) populations grown in controlled environment chambers under the environmental conditions at each latitudinal extreme of the UK. The goal was to discern the roles of temperature and photoperiod on the expression of phenotypic traits. Next, we tested the existence of local adaptation in the two species within the invasive range with a reciprocal transplant experiment at two field sites in the latitudinal extremes of the UK, and analysed which phenotypic traits underlie potential local fitness advantages in each species.Key ResultsPopulations of M. guttatus in the UK showed local adaptation through sexual function (fruit production), while M. × robertsii showed local adaptation via asexual function (stolon production). Phenotypic selection analyses revealed that different traits are associated with fitness in each species. Invasive and native populations of M. guttatus had similar phenotypic plasticity and clonality. M. × robertsii presents greater plasticity and clonality than native M. guttatus, but most populations have restricted clonality under the warm conditions of the south of the UK.ConclusionsThis study provides experimental evidence of local adaptation in a strictly asexual invasive species with high clonality and phenotypic plasticity. This indicates that even asexual taxa can rapidly (<200 years) adapt to novel environmental conditions in which alternative strategies may not ensure the persistence of populations.  相似文献

Abstract

A detailed LM, SEM and TEM study of the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the leaf of the ectohydric moss Zygodon viridissimus var. rupestris (Z. baumgartneri) is described. The presence of papillae on both surfaces is confirmed and a groove, running the length of the nerve, is demonstrated. The presence of waxy particles on both surfaces is also demonstrated. Abstract

The toxic effects of 14 chemical elements (prevalently heavy metals) on the alga Spermatozopsis acidophila Kalina (Volvocales, Polyblepharidaceae) have been investigated.

The results obtained show a high resistance to heavy metals, particularly to Cu, in comparison with data found in literature on other algae.

This phenomenon might be interpreted as a consequence of evolutionary adaptation to highly acid environments.  相似文献

Background and AimsCrassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is an adaptation to increase water use efficiency in dry environments. Similar biochemical patterns occur in the aquatic lycophyte genus Isoëtes. It has long been assumed and accepted that CAM-like behaviour in these aquatic plants is an adaptation to low daytime carbon levels in aquatic ecosystems, but this has never been directly tested.MethodsTo test this hypothesis, populations of Isoëtes engelmannii and I. tuckermanii were grown in climate-controlled chambers and starved of atmospheric CO2 during the day while pH was measured for 24 h.Key ResultsWe demonstrate that terrestrial plants exposed to low atmospheric CO2 display diel acidity cycles similar to those in both xerophytic CAM plants and submerged Isoëtes.ConclusionsDaytime CO2 starvation induces CAM-like nocturnal acid accumulation in terrestrial Isoëtes, substantiating the hypothesis that carbon starvation is a selective pressure for this physiological behaviour.  相似文献

Abstract

Using net assimilation rate as a measure of physiological activity, reciprocal transplants of Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi and Racomitrium lanuginosum between Yläne (60°55′N) and Kevo (69°45′N) and between Kevo and Spitzbergen (78°13′N) were used to investigate adaptation to latitude. It was found that physiological stress increased northwards and that adaptation to different latitudes was largely due to acclimation. [目的] 在乳酸乳球菌NZ9000中异源表达德氏乳杆菌保加利亚亚种中由双组分系统TCS1(JN675228/JN675229)调控的与酸适应相关基因,进而探究德氏乳杆菌保加利亚亚种应对酸胁迫的机制。[方法] 通过逆转录聚合酶链式反应和十二烷基硫酸钠-聚丙烯酰胺凝胶电泳验证由德氏乳杆菌保加利亚亚种TCS1调控的与酸适应相关基因中腺嘌呤磷酸核糖转移酶(aprt)、D-丙氨酸-D-丙氨酸连接酶(ddl)、寡肽ABC转运蛋白(oppDII)和延伸因子Ts(tsf)在乳酸乳球菌NZ9000中的表达情况。酸处理实验验证基因表达对宿主菌酸胁迫耐受能力的影响。并采用酵母双杂交验证双组分系统TCS1与表达的酸适应相关基因之间的互作关系及具体的互作部位。[结果] 结果表明,乳酸乳球菌NZ9000中成功表达了aprtddloppDIItsfaprtddl基因使重组菌对酸胁迫的抗性分别提高了75倍和114倍。oppDIItsf基因的表达对重组菌株的耐酸能力没有明显影响。酵母双杂交实验表明TCS1中的组氨酸蛋白激酶HPK1与Ddl之间存在相互作用,且HPK1-C结构域是二者相互作用的关键区域。[结论] aprtddl过表达菌株酸刺激的适应能力显著高于对照菌株,该研究结果可为德氏乳杆菌保加利亚亚种及类似菌株耐酸性特性的获得策略提供参考。  相似文献

The larva and pupa of Notonesius aucklandicus Kuschel, living in saturated peat soil on the Auckland Islands, some 500 km south of New Zealand, are described and figured. ABSTRACT

Background: Hybrid zones provide excellent opportunities for studying plant adaptation and speciation.

Aims: We tested whether two herbaceous species of Senecio, S. vernalis and S. glaucus, hybridise in the eastern Mediterranean region and form a hybrid zone across an aridity gradient in the Jordan Rift Valley.

Methods: Allozyme variation surveyed across both species was analysed by the programme STRUCTURE to assign individuals to genetic groups and determine levels of admixture. Populations in the Jordan Rift Valley were subsequently subjected to a cline analysis.

Results: STRUCTURE showed that interspecific hybrids were produced at low frequency along the Israeli coastal plain where S. glaucus is represented by ssp. glaucus. In contrast, hybrids were more commonly produced in central populations of the Jordan Rift Valley. Here, the two species form a hybrid zone with S. vernalis occurring in mesic sites to the north and S. glaucus (ssp. coronopifolius) in arid sites to the south. Cline analysis showed that the hybrid zone is centred towards the northern end of the Dead Sea, but the analysis failed to distinguish how it is maintained.

Conclusions: Future detailed genetic and ecological analysis of the Senecio hybrid zone should improve our understanding of plant adaptation and speciation across aridity gradients.  相似文献
