During the first 7 weeks of postnatal life, short day lengths inhibit the onset of puberty in many photoperiodic rodents, but not in Syrian hamsters. In this species, timing of puberty and fecundity are independent of the early postnatal photoperiod. Gestational day length affects postnatal reproductive development in several rodents; its role in Syrian hamsters has not been assessed. We tested the hypothesis that cumulative effects of pre- and postnatal short day lengths would restrain gonadal development in male Syrian hamsters. Males with prenatal short day exposure were generated by dams transferred to short day lengths 6 weeks, 3 weeks, and 0 weeks prior to mating. Additional groups were gestated in long day lengths and transferred to short days at birth, at 4 weeks of age, or not transferred (control hamsters). In pups of dams exposed to short day treatment throughout gestation, decreased testis growth was apparent by 3 weeks and persisted through 9 weeks of age, at which time maximum testis size was attained. A subset of males (14%), whose dams had been in short days for 3 to 6 weeks prior to mating displayed pronounced delays in testicular development, similar to those of other photoperiodic rodents. This treatment also increased the percentage of male offspring that underwent little or no gonadal regression postnatally (39%). By 19 weeks of age, males housed in short days completed spontaneous gonadal development. After prolonged long day treatment to break refractoriness, hamsters that initially were classified as nonregressors underwent testicular regression in response to a 2nd sequence of short day lengths. The combined action of prenatal and early postnatal short day lengths diminishes testicular growth of prepubertal Syrian hamsters no later than the 3rd week of postnatal life, albeit to a lesser extent than in other photoperiodic rodents. 相似文献

Transition from long days (LDs) to short days (SDs) triggers seasonal obesity in Syrian hamsters. We report here that SD-exposed males housed near females exhibit obesity resistance, episodic weight loss, and reduced adiposity. Negative energy balance is achieved by reduced eating, elevated motor activity, and increased caloric efficiency without metabolic compensation. Circulating leptin, insulin, testosterone, corticosterone, and cortisol are normal or reduced in obesity-resistant hamsters. When males are housed in chambers that block physical, visual, and auditory, but not pheromonal, signals from females, resistance to seasonal obesity persists. Moreover, inhalation of extracts from pheromone-releasing flank glands of females suppresses eating and weight gain in SD-exposed males. This novel phenomenon, pheromone-induced anorexia, shows that female pheromones play a critical role in the seasonal energy balance of male hamsters. These findings provide a model to study neural and endocrine mechanisms that underlie eating disorders. 相似文献

Autoradiographic studies using [125I]iodomelatonin in several species, including the Syrian hamster, have revealed that the rostral region of the anterior paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (aPVT) contains a very high density of binding sites for melatonin. In two studies, small or large bilateral electrolytic lesions of the aPVT were made in adult male hamsters maintained on long days (LD 16:8). The hamsters were then transferred to short days (LD 8:16) to test whether testicular regression could occur in response to a decrease in photoperiod. Serum prolactin concentrations were measured as a second photoperiodic response. All unoperated control hamsters showed the typical short-day photoperiodic response: A decrease in serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin concentrations and testicular regression all occurred within 6 weeks in short days, followed by the development of scotorefractoriness. Lesions of the aPVT did not significantly affect the rate or the degree of the short-day-induced decline in serum levels of LH or prolactin, nor the pattern of testicular regression and the subsequent expression of refractoriness. To enable us to determine whether the aPVT might be involved in the entrainment or the expression of circadian rhythms, locomotor activity was monitored continuously in lesioned and control groups in Experiment 2, prior to and following the switch to short days. The reduction in photoperiod (involving an 8-hr advance in the time of lights-off and an 8-hr extension of the dark phase) caused a decompression of the nocturnal activity bout of control animals, so that after 2 weeks in short days, activity onset had also advanced to regain its phase relationship to the timing of lights-off. A similar pattern of reentrainment was observed in lesioned animals, and no differences were observed between treatment groups in the rate of entrainment and decompression. In addition, both intact controls and animals bearing large bilateral lesions of the aPVT exhibited robust free-running circadian rhythms of locomotor activity when held under constant dim red light. In summary, the integrity of the aPVT is not necessary for the seasonal response of the reproductive axis and prolactin secretion to photoperiod, nor for photic entrainment of activity rhythms, in the Syrian hamster. 相似文献

Negative masking of locomotor activity by light in nocturnal rodents is mediated by a non-image-forming irradiance-detection system in the retina. Structures receiving input from this system potentially contribute to the masking response. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) regulates locomotor activity and receives dense innervation from the irradiance-detection system via the retinohypothalamic tract, but its role in masking is unclear. We studied masking in adult Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) with electrolytic lesions directed at the SCN. Hamsters were exposed to a 3.5:3.5 ultradian light/dark cycle and their wheel-running activity was monitored. Intact hamsters showed robust masking, expressing less than 20% of their activity in the light even though light and dark occurred equally during their active times. In contrast, hamsters with lesions showed, on average, as much activity in the light as in the dark. Tracing of retinal projections using cholera toxin subunit showed that the lesions damaged retinal projections to the SCN and to the adjacent subparaventricular zone. Retinal innervation outside the hypothalamus was not obviously affected by the lesions. Our results indicate that retinohypothalamic projections, and the targets of these projections, to the SCN and/or adjacent hypothalamic areas play an important role in masking. 相似文献

Pineal melatonin synthesis is regulated by norepinephrine at beta-adrenergic receptors on pinealocytes. Melatonin released from the pineal is believed to be responsible for short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression. By blocking melatonin production at the beta-adrenergic receptor with beta-adrenergic antagonists, short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression was prevented. Propranolol or nadolol injected daily in the late afternoon prohibited short photoperiod-produced testicular regression in male Syrian hamsters. Likewise, propranolol and nadolol pellets were able to block short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression. Interestingly, in the presence of beta-adrenergic antagonists, gonadal regression was still produced by daily afternoon injections of melatonin. These results indicate that propranolol or nadolol can be used to "pharmacologically pinealectomize" hamsters and block the physiological action of the pineal. 相似文献

Adult male Syrian hamsters were subjected to 1, 3, 5, 7 or 11 weeks of either natural winter conditions or rigorously controlled laboratory conditions (LD 1014; 22 ± 2C). Although both groups of hamsters gained weight over the course of the experiment, hamsters housed indoors were significantly heavier after 5 weeks of treatment compared to their outdoors counterparts. Animals housed under natural conditions exhibited a significant decrease in circulating levels of thyroxine (T4) and a rapid rise in triiodothyronine (T3) levels; the free T4 and free T3 index (FT4I and FT3I) mirrored the changes in circulating levels of the respective hormones. Laboratory-housed animals had a slight rise in T4 and FT4I at 3 weeks followed by a slow steady decline in these values; T3 and FT3I values did not change remarkably in these animals. Plasma cholesterol declined steadily over the course of the experiment in laboratory-maintained animals but increased slightly during the first 5 weeks in animals under natural conditions. Since the photoperiodic conditions were approximately of the same duration in these 2 groups, it is concluded that the major differences in body weight, thyroid hormone values and plasma cholesterol are due to some component (possibly temperature) in the natural environment. 相似文献

Light-microscope immunocytochemistry (ICC) was used to investigate postnatal changes in the morphology of LHRH neurons in the brains of male Syrian hamsters and to relate these changes to more overt maturational developments within the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. The animals were maintained under long-day photoperiods (14L:10D), and groups of 6-7 were killed at 10-day intervals from Day 15 to Day 65. Their brains were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde, sectioned sagittally with a vibratome (75 microns), and processed for ICC using monoclonal LHRH antibody HU4H. Throughout the study period, the hamsters showed a progressive increase in plasma gonadotropin levels, closely followed by an increase in testicular weight and plasma testosterone levels. Histology of the testes revealed that spermatogenesis was already qualitatively completed by Day 35 and quantitative aspects were established by Day 45. Within the brain, LHRH neuronal perikarya were distributed primarily in the medial septal-preoptic area and the diagonal band of Broca; morphologically, these immunopositive neurons were either monopolar or bipolar. The total number of LHRH neurons detected in the areas examined was approximately 440 throughout the developmental period, and the relative proportions of monopolar and bipolar subtypes (86% and 14%, respectively) remained unchanged. In contrast, the area of the perikarya, as determined by autoimage analysis, showed a highly significant age-related increase, both for the monopolar and bipolar neurons. It is suggested that these developmental changes in the LHRH neurons reflect an increase in LHRH synthesis and may, therefore, provide a neuroendocrine trigger for the onset of puberty. 相似文献

A brief exposure to social defeat in male Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) leads to profound changes in the subsequent agonistic behavior exhibited by the defeated animals. Following defeat in the home cage of an aggressive conspecific, male hamsters will subsequently fail to defend their home territory even if the intruder is a smaller, nonaggressive male. This phenomenon has been called conditioned defeat. In Experiment 1, we examined the duration of conditioned defeat by repeatedly testing (every 3-5 days) defeated hamsters with a nonaggressive intruder. We found that conditioned defeat occurs in all defeated male hamsters and persists for a prolonged period of time (at least 33 days) in the majority of male hamsters tested despite the fact that these animals are never attacked by the nonaggressive intruders. In Experiment 2, we examined whether conditioned defeat could be induced in female Syrian hamsters. While conditioned defeat occurred in some females, they displayed only low levels of submissive/defensive behavior and, in contrast to males, the conditioned defeat response did not persist beyond the first test. These results suggest that in male hamsters conditioned defeat is a profound, persistent behavioral change characterized by a total absence of territorial aggression and by the frequent display of submissive and defensive behaviors. Conversely, social defeat in female hamsters does not appear to induce long-term behavioral changes. Finally, in Experiment 3, we determined that plasma adrenocorticotropin-like immunoreactivity increases in females following social defeat in a manner similar to that seen in males, suggesting that the disparate behavioral reactions of males and females are not due to sex differences in the release of, or response to, plasma adrenocorticotropin. 相似文献

The effect of photoperiodic conditions on sexual behavior was investigated in male Syrian hamsters that were either gonadally intact, or castrated and treated with low doses of testosterone throughout the experiment. Hamsters were exposed to long (LD 16:8) or short (LD 8:16) days for 7 weeks; for the next 8 weeks, either they were exposed to an intermediate daylength (LD 12:12), or daylength conditions remained unchanged. Sexual behavior was affected by photoperiod conditions in both gonadally intact animals and testosterone-treated castrates, but to different degrees. Intact males exposed to short days for 15 weeks exhibited gonadal regression, and their copulatory performance was impaired. The percentage of animals that intromitted or ejaculated was significantly reduced. Additional measures of sexual performance among the copulating males were also affected. In contrast, among the castrates with testosterone clamped at low but stable levels, the proportion of males that mounted, intromitted, or ejaculated was not affected by photoperiod. However, among the males that continued to copulate, sexual performance changes were present in the short-day castrates that resembled those displayed by the intact males. We infer that these behavioral effects in both hormonal conditions reflect primarily a difficulty in the attainment of intromission. Gonadal regression alone cannot easily account for the behavioral deficits of the intact males, because circulating testosterone levels at the end of the experiment were not significantly different between the gonadally intact hamsters and the castrated, testosterone-treated hamsters exposed continuously to short days. Males transferred from either long or short days to the intermediate-daylength condition responded behaviorally to this photoperiod as if it were a short day, that is, their ejaculatory frequency declined. We conclude that male hamsters exposed to photoinhibitory daylengths exhibit deficits in their sexual behavior, not only because endogenous levels of testosterone decrease, but also because the substrates on which this hormone acts become less responsive. We hypothesize that under physiological conditions, the episodic secretion of testosterone imposes constraints on the maintenance or restoration of copulation, and that the potent behavioral effects achieved by constant-release implants of testosterone may mask the presence of photoperiodically induced alterations in the hamster's sensitivity to this gonadal hormone. 相似文献

We sought to determine whether ambient temperature (T(a)) affects gonadal function by altering the rate at which circadian rhythms entrain to short day lengths. Syrian hamsters were housed in cages where they received 14 h of light per day ("long days," 14L) at 22 degrees C. Hamsters were then transferred to cages to receive 10 h of light per day ("short days," 10L) and kept at 5, 22, or 28 degrees C or were maintained in 14L at 22 degrees C. Body mass and estimated testis volume as well as duration of nocturnal locomotor activity (alpha), previously established as a reliable indicator of the duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion, were determined over the course of 24 wk. Testicular regression in short days was accelerated by 4 wk at 5 degrees C and delayed by 3 wk at 28 degrees C relative to 22 degrees C. The interval between alpha-expansion and initiation of testicular regression was markedly affected by T(a) with delays of 0, 3, and 6 wk at 5, 22, and 28 degrees C, respectively. All hamsters held at 5 and 22 degrees C underwent testicular regression, but 25% of those maintained at 28 degrees C failed to do so. We suggest that T(a) modulates testicular regression primarily by affecting responsiveness of neuroendocrine target tissues to long melatonin signals. 相似文献

The effects of brief light pulses (1-60 min in duration) on the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity and/or the neuroendocrine-gonadal axis was investigated in male Djungarian hamsters. Exposure of hamsters free-running in constant darkness to a single 1-h pulse of light induced phase-dependent phase shifts in the rhythm of locomotor activity. The general shape of the "phase-response curve" was similar to that observed in other animals; phase-delays and phase-advances were induced by light pulses delivered in the early and late subjective night, respectively, while light pulses during the subjective day induced little or no phase-shift in the activity rhythm. Animals exposed for 7 days to 1-min of light during the night in animals otherwise exposed to 6L:18D resulted in increased levels of serum FSH and testicular weight. Daily exposure to two 1-h or two 10-min pulses of light (but not two 1-min pulses) for 10 days resulted in stable entrainment of the activity rhythm as well as testicular weight gains and serum FSH increases. When two 10-min pulses of light were presented 8 and 16 h apart, some animals showed a short-day entrainment pattern (i.e., locomotor activity confined to the long period of darkness) while other animals showed a long-day entrainment pattern (i.e., locomotor activity confined to the short period of darkness). The effect of photoperiodic history on the neuroendocrine response to intermediate daylengths (11-13.5 hr of light) was investigated in the male Syrian hamster. The duration of the nocturnal peak of pineal melatonin content was inversely proportional to photoperiod and independent of photoperiodic history. Serum levels of prolactin were lower in animals exposed to shorter photoperiods. Photoperiodic history had little effect on the response of serum prolactin to intermediate daylengths. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were also lower in shorter photoperiods, but in addition were sensitive to the direction of photoperiodic change, so that a single photoperiod could be interpreted as either stimulatory or inhibitory to LH secretion. This effect of photoperiodic history was expressed at intermediate photoperiods with 12-13.5 hr of light. The sensitivity of serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels to photoperiodic history was masked by an early onset of photorefractoriness. Testicular size and serum testosterone levels revealed weaker effects of photoperiodic history; these were attributed to the dissociation between gonadotrophin and prolactin secretion induced by intermediate daylengths. The contrasting effects of photoperiodic history on the secretion of LH and prolactin may represent the expression of multiple photoperiodic time-measuring systems. 相似文献

The effects of mating time and of LD cycles on the timing of birth and length of gestation were examined in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). Hamsters maintained on 14L:10D cycles were mated for 2 h either in the evening or in the morning, and groups of hamsters mated in the morning were subjected to either a 6-h advance shift or a 6-h delay shift of the LD cycle on Days 5-14 of gestation. For the last 2 days of gestation the hamsters were kept in constant dim light and observed every hour to determine the time of birth. Hamsters mated in the evening gave birth an average of 4.8 h before those mated in the morning, and the hamsters subjected to an advance shift gave birth an average of 8.1 h before those subjected to delay shift. The results show that 80-100% of births occur during the subjective day on Day 16 of gestation and that the minimum duration of gestation is 15 days and 2 h. The regulation of birth appears to involve two processes, an interval timer related to the time of conception and a circadian rhythm that is governed by the LD cycle. 相似文献

It has been suggested that changes in endogenous glutamatergic stimulation of secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) induced by photoperiod play a role in regulating seasonal cycles of reproductive activity. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the glutamatergic control of the secretion of LH in the male Syrian hamster is sensitive to photoperiod, by determining whether the glutamate agonist N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) could stimulate LH secretion in this species and, if so, to determine whether the response varied among animals exposed to different daylengths. In the first experiment, adult male hamsters were housed in either short day (8 h light: 16 h dark) for 6 weeks to induce testicular regression, or long days (16 h light: 8 h dark) to maintain testicular function, and the effects of systemic administration of NMDA on serum LH concentrations were determined. In the short-day hamsters, all s.c. doses of NMDA (25-75 mg kg-1 body weight) produced a robust rise in serum LH concentrations within 15 min. In the long-day hamsters, basal LH concentrations were higher than in short-day hamsters, but only the highest dose of NMDA produced a significant increase in LH concentrations, and the magnitude of this increment was less than those observed in short days. In hamsters in long days, the low doses of NMDA that did not significantly alter LH concentrations nevertheless significantly suppressed serum prolactin concentrations, demonstrating the efficacy of the drug. In hamsters in short days, serum prolactin concentrations were at the limit of detection of the assay, so no inhibitory effect of NMDA on prolactin secretion could be determined on this photoperiod. In the second experiment, the effects of a fixed dose of NMDA (50 mg kg-1 body weight) was tested at intervals in hamsters exposed to short days for a prolonged period such that their testes initially regressed, but then became scotorefractory and testicular recrudescence occurred. After 6 and 12 weeks in short days, NMDA stimulated LH secretion. However, after 24 weeks in short days when testicular recrudescence was complete, the response to NMDA was lost. A third experiment determined whether the reduced response to NMDA in hamsters on long days relative to those in short days might result from higher concentrations of circulating testosterone. In most mammalian species, reduced androgen availability is associated with marked reductions in male sexuality; conversely, androgen replacement in castrated males restores sex behavior within a few weeks. Testosterone (T) pulse duration, amplitude, frequency, and inter-pulse interval may be as important as total amount of hormone in determining target tissue responsiveness. We remain ignorant of the number and duration of daily T pulses necessary and sufficient to sustain male mating behavior. An in-dwelling infusion system was employed to vary T-pulse frequencies and durations. Daily 4 h infusions of aqueous T (100 microg/0.064 ml) and twice daily 4 h pulses of T (each 50 microg/0.064 ml) were sufficient to maintain ejaculatory behavior of sexually experienced castrated hamsters for 11 weeks post-castration; castrated hamsters infused with vehicle ceased to display the ejaculatory pattern 3 weeks after gonadectomy. Circulating T concentrations of hormone-infused hamsters declined markedly 7 h after the termination of each infusion. These results establish that male sex behavior can be sustained with infusions of relatively low T concentrations for 4 h/day and suggests that the basal concentrations of T sustained by the gonad during inter-pulse intervals may not be necessary for maintenance of sex behavior. 4 h T infusions were sufficient to maintain penile and seminal vesicles weights, but not ventral prostate weights or flank gland dimensions; the threshold for maintaining male sex behavior is lower than that for some androgen-dependent peripheral structures. Development of effective androgen replacement regimens that sustain sex behavior in castrated animals may be useful in the design of androgen replacement therapy for hypogonadal men. 相似文献

It has been widely reported that gonadal hormones influence the display of aggression in Syrian hamsters; conversely, much less is known about whether gonadal hormones modulate submissive/defensive behaviors in these animals. Following social defeat, male hamsters no longer display normal territorial aggression but instead display submissive/defensive behavior in the presence of a smaller opponent, a phenomenon we have termed conditioned defeat (CD). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of gonadal hormones on the display of CD in male hamsters. In Experiment 1, males were castrated or sham-operated. The castrated males were significantly more submissive following social defeat relative to their intact counterparts. The increased submissive behavior in the castrated males during CD testing was particularly surprising, given the fact that they were attacked significantly less during CD training. In Experiment 2a, males were castrated and given hormone replacement. Castrated males treated with testosterone or dihydrotestosterone displayed significantly less submissive behavior following social defeat than did those treated with cholesterol or estradiol. Finally, in Experiment 2b, there was no effect of hormone replacement on aggressive behavior in non-defeated hamsters suggesting that the decrease in submissive behavior in males treated with dihydrotestosterone or testosterone is specific to being previously defeated. Taken together the data indicate that the presence of androgens reduces the display of submission in defeated male hamsters. More importantly, these findings suggest that androgens may have a protective effect against the development of depression-like or anxiety-like behaviors following exposure to an ethologically relevant stressor. 相似文献

Testosterone (T) secreted in short pulses several times each day is essential for the maintenance of male sex behavior (MSB) in mammals. Blood T concentrations are relatively low during inter-pulse intervals. Assessment of androgenic influences on MSB of rodents has, with very few exceptions, involved either injections of pure or esterified hormones dissolved in oil or implantation of constant release capsules that generate supraphysiological and/or constantly elevated T concentrations. The minimum daily concentration of T necessary to maintain and restore MSB when T is delivered as a discrete short pulse remains unspecified; nor is it known whether infrequent T pulses in the physiological range sustain MSB. To address these questions, we varied T injection concentrations and frequencies in castrated, sexually-experienced Syrian hamsters. All males injected daily with an aqueous vehicle failed to display the ejaculatory reflex 5 weeks after castration. Once daily 15 μg subcutaneous T injections both maintained and restored MSB, whereas once daily 5 μg T injections resulted in fewer males ejaculating and longer ejaculation latencies. Substantially higher T doses were required to restore MSB in previous studies when T was administered in an oil vehicle. 50 μg T maintained MSB in most hamsters injected once every 4 or 7 days, despite long intervals between injections during which circulating T was undetectable or well below physiological concentrations. Some T regimens that maintained MSB were associated with subnormal seminal vesicle and ventral prostate weights. The demonstration that relatively brief, infrequent elevations of T are sufficient to support MSB provides a useful model to assess the neuroendocrine basis of MSB and raises the possibility that infrequent low dose androgen replacement protocols may restore sex behavior to hypogonadal men without inducing some of the negative side-effects associated with more frequent, higher dose treatments. 相似文献

One brain region that has been implicated in the regulation of lordosis is the medial preoptic-anterior hypothalamic continuum (MPOA-AH). Previous studies have suggested that this zone may be part of the circuit mediating the effects of serotonin (5-HT) on sexual receptivity. In the present experiments, we investigated the role of 5-HT(1a/7) and 5-HT(2) receptor subtypes in the MPOA-AH in the control of lordosis. In two experiments, either 5-HT(1a/7) or 5-HT(2) agonists were injected unilaterally into the MPOA-AH of ovariectomized, hormonally primed female hamsters. In the first experiment, microinjections of the 5-HT(1a/7) agonist 8-hydroxy-2,9-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin resulted in an attenuation of the lordosis posture by causing a decrease in the mean lordosis duration and an increase in the number of lordosis episodes over the entire testing period. In the second experiment, microinjections of the 5-HT(2b/2c) agonist m-chlorophenylpiperazine did not result in any changes in sexual receptivity. However, microinjections of the 5-HT(2) agonist (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane HCl facilitated lordosis by increasing the mean lordosis duration and decreasing the number of lordosis episodes in the first 5 min of the testing period. These data indicate that serotonin may act in the MPOA-AH via 5-HT(1a/7) receptors to attenuate and 5-HT(2) receptors to facilitate sexual receptivity. 相似文献

Obesity is a world-wide epidemic, and many factors, including stress, have been linked to this growing trend. After social stress (i.e., defeat), subordinate laboratory rats and most laboratory mice become hypophagic and, subsequently, lose body mass; the opposite is true of subordinate Syrian hamsters. After social defeat, Syrian hamsters become hyperphagic and gain body mass compared with nonstressed controls. It is unknown whether this increase in body mass and food intake is limited to subordinate hamsters. In experiment 1, we asked, do dominant hamsters increase food intake, body mass, and adiposity after an agonistic encounter? Subordinate hamsters increased food intake and body mass compared with nonstressed controls. Although there was no difference in food intake or absolute body mass between dominant and nonstressed control animals, cumulative body mass gain was significantly higher in dominant than in nonstressed control animals. Total carcass lipid and white adipose tissue (WAT) (i.e., retroperitoneal and epididymal WAT) masses were significantly increased in subordinate, but not dominant, hamsters compared with nonstressed controls. In experiment 2, we asked, does footshock stress increase food intake, body mass, and adiposity. Hamsters exposed to defeat, but not footshock stress, increased food intake relative to nonstressed controls. In animals exposed to defeat or footshock stress, body mass, as well as mesenteric WAT mass, increased compared with nonstressed controls. Collectively, these data demonstrate that social and nonsocial stressors increase body and lipid mass in male hamsters, suggesting that this species may prove useful for studying the physiology of stress-induced obesity in some humans. 相似文献
