Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) processes are energy intense systems as they are mainly run under continuous constant current supply mode. In this study, pulsed electrokinetic remediation (PEKR) technique was employed for the removal of Cd, Hg and Cr from mixed contaminated natural clay and bentonite soils. The effects of voltage gradient, pulse duty cycle and bentonite/clay ratio on the simultaneous removal efficiencies of the heavy metals and specific energy consumption were investigated. Fifteen (15) PEKR experiments were conducted according to Box–Behnken design (BBD) with each experiment allowed to continuously run for 21 days. Increase in the proportion of the bentonite significantly decreased the removal efficiency of the heavy metals while having insignificant effect on the energy consumption. Conversely, increase in both voltage gradient and pulse duty cycle increased the heavy metals removal efficiencies, though at the expense of increase in energy consumption due to combine effects of increase in the soil electrical conductivity, amount of current needed to sustain the applied voltage gradient as well as the raise in the soil pH. The maximum achievable removal efficiencies for Cd, Hg and Cr were 21.87, 78.06 and 89.64% respectively. The specific energy consumption significantly increased from the range of 91.67–154.17 kwh/m3 to 1700–2441.67 kwh/m3 as a result of combined effect of increasing voltage gradient and pulse duty cycle. This demonstrated that effective PEKR could be achieved with significance reduction in the energy consumption via appropriate selection of pulse duty and voltage gradient for clay soils of different proportion of montmorillonite.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) pollution is usually regarded as an environmental stress in reducing microbial diversity and altering bacterial community structure. However, these results were based on relatively short-term studies, which might obscure the real response of microbial species to Hg contamination. Here, we analysed the bacterial abundance and community composition in paddy soils that have been potentially contaminated by Hg for more than 600 years. Expectedly, the soil Hg pollution significantly influenced the bacterial community structure. However, the bacterial abundance was significantly correlated with the soil organic matter content rather than the total Hg (THg) concentration. The bacterial alpha diversity increased at relatively low levels of THg and methylmercury (MeHg) and subsequently approached a plateau above 4.86 mg kg?1 THg or 18.62 ng g?1 MeHg, respectively. Contrasting with the general prediction of decreasing diversity along Hg stress, our results seem to be consistent with the intermediate disturbance hypotheses with the peak biological diversity under intermediate disturbance or stress. This result was partly supported by the inconsistent response of bacterial species to Hg stress. For instance, the relative abundance of Nitrospirae decreased, while that of Gemmatimonadetes increased significantly along the increasing soil THg and MeHg concentrations. In addition, the content of SO4 2?, THg, MeHg and soil depth were the four main factors influencing bacterial community structures based on the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Overall, our findings provide novel insight into the distribution patterns of bacterial community along the long-term Hg-contaminated gradient in paddy soils.  相似文献

The aquatic plant Hydrocotyle vulgaris was evaluated for its efficacy in removing prometryn from nutrient solution. Under optimized experimental conditions, up to 94.0% of the initial prometryn was removed from the hydroponic culture medium by H. vulgaris in 30 days. The concentration of prometryn decreased from the initial level of 0.55 ± 0.013 mg/L to 0.036 ± 0.001 mg/L at the end of the experimental period. The removal kinetics followed first-order kinetic equation (Ct = 0.4569e?0.09t). Half-life (t1/2) of prometryn was greatly shortened from 27.16 days (without plant) to 5.58 days (with H. vulgaris). Approximately 22% of the initial prometryn residue was found in H. vulgaris tissue, while 11.7% was degraded by the plant in 30 days. The metabolites of prometryn detected were 2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine (in the hydroponic culture medium) and 2,4,6-trihydroxy-1,3,5-triazine (in plant tissue) after 30 days. The results indicate that H. vulgaris can be used for phytoextraction of prometryn and could potentially be effective in removing other s-trazine pesticides from contaminated aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of crude oil removal by fungal strains isolated from Arak refinery. The results showed that the RH10 strain is a potent strain as a surfactant producer and degrader of petrochemical hydrocarbons. The strain was identified as a Fusarium neocosmosporiellum and could degrade 58% of hydrocarbons in the minimal medium and reduce the surface tension from 45 to 26.5 mN m?1. Moreover, residual crude oil analysis with Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry showed that this strain was able to degrade 50% of aliphatic compounds. To investigate the mechanism of degradation, oxidase enzymes were assayed and it was found that F. neocosmosporiellum can produce 1.94 U L?1 of laccase in 10 g L?1 crude oil. Carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and soil pattern optimization in a microcosm study showed that this strain removed 44% and 27% of the crude oil from contaminated soil in 1% and 5% crude oil concentrations, respectively. Under optimum condition, 9.66 g kg?1 crude oil was removed by F. neocosmosporiellum when the initial oil concentration was 50 g kg?1, at the end of 150 days microcosm experiment. The results demonstrated the promising potential of fungi strain for cleaning of contaminated soil.  相似文献

This study reports a comparative account of metal accumulation in the trees, grasses, and flowering plants from agricultural fields contaminated with tannery wastewater. Soil physico-chemical properties along the pollution gradient and soil depth were analyzed. Monitoring and assessment of the plants growing on contaminated sites revealed that the accumulation of Cr in the aboveground part of the trees ranged from 1.87 to 34.44 μg g?1 dw with maximum concentration in Dendro-calamus strictus (34.44 μg g?1 dw). Chrysanthemum coronarium and Tagetes erecta showed better accumulation of Cr than other flowering plants. Separate field experiments were conducted on the contaminated area. The shoots of Vetiveria zizanoides (532 mg 4 m?2) and Cymbopogan winterianus (535.46 mg 4 m?2) have shown almost similar removal potential of Cr, with maximum removal potential in the roots of C. winterianus (1206.43 mg 4 m?2). Seasonal flowering plants (i.e., C. coronarium) have shown better accumulation of Cr than T. erecta. The results indicate that the plants of V. zizanoides, C. coronarium, and C. winterianus are suitable for phytoremediation of contaminated sites and trees can successfully be used for phytostabilization.  相似文献

This paper discusses the results of pentachlorophenol (PCP) anaerobic biodegradation in a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor operated under methanogenic and halophylic conditions. The system was inoculated with autochthonous microorganisms taken from a site in the Santos-São Vicente Estuary (state of São Paulo, Brazil) severely contaminated with PCP, phenolic compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. The inoculum was previously enriched for methanogenesis activity by changing glucose concentrations and under halophylic condition. PCP was added to the HAIB reactor as sodium salt (NaPCP) at an initial concentration of 5 mg l?1 and increased to 13, 15, and 21 mg l?1. Organic matter removal efficiency ranged from 77 to 100%. PCP removal efficiency was 100%. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profile showed changes in the structure of Bacteria domain, which was associated with NaPCP and glucose amendments. The diversity of Archaea remained unaltered during the different phases. Scanning electron microscope examinations showed that cells morphologically resembling Methanosarcina and Methanosaeta predominated in the biofilm. These cells were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization with the Methanosarcinales (MSMX860) specific probe. The results are of great importance in planning the estuary’s restoration by using anaerobic technology and autochthonous microorganisms for bioremediation.  相似文献

In this investigation, we report on the biosorption of Pb (II) from aqueous solutions by the nonliving biomass of the micro-alga (cyanobacterium) Spirulina platensis. Propagation of the micro-alga was carried out in outside oblong raceway ponds. The biomass was cleaned, dried and used for the investigation. The effects of pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, initial concentration of Pb (II), and contact time on the adsorption of lead by the dry biomass were studied. The experiments were carried out in 250 ml conical flasks containing 100 ml of test solutions using an orbital incubator at 150 rpm. Concentrations of the metal before and after the experiments were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Very high levels of Pb (II) removal (>91%) were obtained. The optimum conditions for maximal adsorption by S. platensis were found to be pH 3; 2 g of adsorbent dose; incubation at 26°C; 100 mg/l of lead initial concentration and 60 minutes of contact time. The experimental data fitted well with Freundlich isotherm equation with R2 values greater than 0.97. Based on our results, we recommend the utilization of S. platensis biomass for heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

This study investigated the potential of Azolla pinnata (AP) in the removal of toxic methyl violet 2B (MV) dye wastewater using the phytoextraction approach with the inclusion of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modelling. Parameters examined included the effects of dye concentration, pH and plant dosage. The highest removal efficiency was 93% which was achieved at a plant dosage of 0.8 g (dye volume = 200 mL, initial pH = 6.0, initial dye concentration = 10 mg L?1). A significant decrease in relative frond number (RFN), a growth rate estimator, observed at a dye concentration of 20 mg L?1 MV indicated some toxicity, which coincided with the plant pigments studies where the chlorophyll a content was lower than the control. There were little differences in the plant pigment contents between the control and those in the presence of dye (5 to 15 mg L?1) indicating the tolerance of AP to MV at lower concentrations. A three-layer ANN model was optimized (6 neurons in the hidden layer) and successfully predicted the phytoextraction of MV (R = 0.9989, RMSE = 0.0098). In conclusion, AP proved to be a suitable plant that could be used for the phytoextraction of MV while the ANN modelling has shown to be a reliable method for the modelling of phytoextraction of MV using AP.  相似文献

Biosurfactants are considered to facilitate PAHs dissolution in soil slurries for bioremediation applications. In this work, the carbon and nitrogen sources, pH, C/N ratio, and salinity, were considered for optimization of biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa SP4 isolate to enhance pyrene removal from the contaminated soil. Analysis of ANOVA indicated that the carbon source was the most effective factor, followed by pH, nitrogen source, C/N ratio, and salinity. Taguchi experimental design proposed the optimum operating conditions of olive oil, NH4NO3, C/N ratio of 5, salinity of 0.5%, and pH 7. Applying the conditions determined by Taguchi design led to a production yield of 452 mg L?1 (13% improvement) at the optimum conditions. The main characteristics of produced biosurfactant included the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 60 mg L?1 and liquid medium surface tension of 29.5 mN m?1. Produced biosurfactant was used for bioremediation of soil artificially contaminated with 500 mg kg?1 of pyrene. Following the addition of 250 mg L?1 biosurfactant, the pyrene removal of 84.6% was obtained compared to 59.8% for control sample without any surfactant.  相似文献

Each kind of conventional plastic filler (polyurethane filler, SPR-1 suspension filler, TA-II elastic filler and sphere filler) coupled with alkaline pretreated corncob (A.H.corncob) was applied in each bioreactor system for treating polluted water with nitrate and organics. Results demonstrated that addition of A.H.corncob could achieve simultaneous removal of nitrogen and organics, and coupling of SPR-1 suspension filler with A.H.corncob (R2) had the best performance. In coupling system of R2, the total nitrogen (TN) removal rate improved from below 10% to 55.92 ± 18.27% with effluent CODMn concentration maintaining at a low level of 2.67 ± 0.44 mg L?1. Microbial analysis of combined filler system demonstrated that conventional plastic filler mainly accumulated non-solid-phase denitrifiers for both nitrate and organics removal including genera Salipiger, Enterobacteriaceae etc. while A.H.corncob carrier was stronghold of solid-phase denitrifiers (Runella, etc.) directly using lignocellulosic materials as carbon source and fermentative bacteria (Coprococcus, etc.) for supplementing available carbon sources for denitrifiers in the system, which were integrated to achieve simultaneous removal of nitrate and organics.  相似文献

Response surface methodology (RSM) under Box–Behnken design (BBD) was applied to evaluate the effect of the influencing parameters including surfactant concentration, liquid/soil ratio, Humic Acid concentration, and washing time on phenanthrene removal efficiency in soil washing process by using the nonionic surfactant Tween 80 and find an optimal operational conditions to achieve the highest removal efficiency. A polynomial quadratic model was used to correlate phenanthrene removal efficiency and four independent variables (R2 = 0.9719). Based on the obtained results the most influential parameter on phenanthrene removal efficiency was surfactant concentration with an impact value of 69.519%. Liquid/soil ratio was also another factor that significantly influenced on removal efficiency with an impact value of 25.014%. The interaction between surfactant concentration and liquid/soil ratio was also shown to have a positive significant effect on removal efficiency (pvalue = 0.0027). However, the other independent variables Humic Acid concentration and time were not significant in the ranges selected in this study. Based on the optimization results maximum removal efficiency of 70.692 ± 3.647% was achieved under the conditions of surfactant concentration 5000 mg L?1, liquid/soil ratio 30 v/w, HA concentration 9.88 mg L?1, and washing time 2 h, which was in good agreement with predicted value (66.643%).  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to investigate the capacity of the aquatic macrophyte Potamogeton pusillus to remove As3+, As5+, and Hg from aqueous solutions. The plants were exposed to 0 mg.L?1, 0.1 mg.L?1, 0.5 mg.L?1, 1 mg.L?1, or 2 mg.L?1 of As3+, As5+, and Hg for 20 days. The results obtained for the individual removal of As3+, As5+, and Hg from water solutions, together with their accumulation in P. pusillus, indicate that this plant can be effectively used for the removal of Hg and of moderate concentrations of As3+ or As5+ (0.1 mg.L?1) from aquatic systems. Roots and leaves accumulated the highest amount of As when the plant was exposed to As5+, but when it was exposed to As3+, the root accumulated the highest amount of As, and the leaves, the highest amount of Hg. When compared to other aquatic plants species, the results showed that P. pusillus demonstrated a higher Hg accumulation (2465 ± 293 µg.g?1) when the transfer coefficient was 40,580 ± 3762 L.kg ?1, showing the great potential of this macrophyte for phytoremediation of water contaminated with Hg. To the extent of our knowledge, this is the first report on bioaccumulation of As3+, As5+, and Hg by P. pusillus.  相似文献

The biocatalyzing effect of a novel cellulose acetate immobilized redox mediators technology (CE-RM) on nitrite denitrification process was studied with anthraquinone, 1,8-dichloroanthraquinone, 1,5-dichloroanthraquinone and 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone. The results showed that the immobilized 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone presented the best biocatalyzed effect which increased nitrite denitrification rate to 2.3-fold with 12 mmol/L 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone. The unequal biocatalyzing effect was due to the quantity and position of –Cl substituent in anthraquinone-structure. Moreover, the nitrite denitrification rate was increased with the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) values becoming more negative during the biocatalyzing process. The stabilized ORP value with 12 mmol/L immobilized 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone were 81 mV lower than the control. At the same time, the more OH? was produced with the higher nitrite removal rate achieved in the nitrite denitrification process. In addition, a positive linear correlation was found between the nitrite removal reaction constants k [gNO2 ?–N/(gVSS d)] and immobilized 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone concentration (C 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone), which was k = 1.8443 C 1,4,5,8-tetrachloroanthraquinone + 33.75(R 2 = 0.9411). The initial nitrite concentration of 179 mgNO2 ?–N/L resulted in the maximum nitrite removal rate, which was 6.526[gNO2 ?–N/(gVSS d)]. These results show that the application of cellulose acetate immobilized redox mediators (CE-RM) can be valuable for increasing nitrite denitrification rate.  相似文献

Microorganism with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability plays a significant role in nitrogen removal process, especially in the eutrophic waters with excessive nitrogen loads. The nitrogen removal capacity of microorganism may suffer from low temperature or nitrite nitrogen source. In this study, a hypothermia aerobic nitrite-denitrifying bacterium, Pseudomonas tolaasii strain Y-11, was selected to determine the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability with mixed nitrogen source at 15 °C. The sole nitrogen removal efficiencies of strain Y-11 in simulated wastewater were obtained. After 24 h of incubation at 15 °C, the ammonium nitrogen fell below the detection limit from an initial value of 10.99 mg/L. Approximately 88.0 ± 0.33% of nitrate nitrogen was removed with the initial concentration of 11.78 mg/L and the nitrite nitrogen was not detected with the initial concentration of 10.75 mg/L after 48 h of incubation at 15 °C. Additionally, the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification nitrogen removal ability of P. tolaasii strain Y-11 was evaluated using low concentration of mixed NH4+-N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 5 mg/L-N each) and high concentration of mixed NH4+–N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 100 mg/L-N each). There was no nitrite nitrogen accumulation at the time of evaluation. The results demonstrated that P. tolaasii strain Y-11 had higher simultaneous nitrification and denitrification capacity with low concentration of mixed inorganic nitrogen sources and may be applied in low temperature wastewater treatment.  相似文献

In published literature there are limited studies on the estimation of kinetic parameters of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil. In addition, neither the kinetic studies were performed with Gram-positive bacteria nor conducted under non-indigenous condition in order to understand their removal performance. Thus, a mathematical model describing biodegradation of phenanthrene-contaminated soil by Corynebacterium urealyticum, bacterium isolated from municipal sludge, was developed in this study. The model includes three kinetic parameters that were determined using TableCurve 2D software, namely qmax (maximum substrate utilization rate per unit mass of bacteria), X (biomass concentration) and Ks (substrate concentration at one half the maximum substrate utilization rate). These parameters were evaluated and verified in five different initial phenanthrene concentrations. Highest degradation rate was determined to be 79.24 mg kg?1 day?1 at 500 mg kg?1 initial phenanthrene concentrations. This high concentration shows that bacteria perform better in contaminated sand compared to liquid media. High r2 values, ranging from 0.92 to 0.99, were obtained excluding 1000 mg/kg phenanthrene. The kinetic parameters, i.e., qmax and Ks, increased with the phenanthrene concentration and thus suggest that bacteria degrade at a higher degradation rate. This model successfully described the biodegradation profiles observed at different initial phenanthrene concentrations. The established model can be used to simulate the duration of phenanthrene degradation using only the value of the initial PAHs concentration.  相似文献

Multiple crop experiment of hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum L. with low accumulation Chinese cabbage Fenyuanxin 3 were conducted in a cadmium (Cd) contaminated vegetable field. In the first round, the average removal rate of S. nigrum to Cd was about 10% without assisted phytoextraction reagent addition for the top soil (0–20 cm) with Cd concentration at 0.53–0.97 mg kg?1 after its grew 90 days. As for assisted phytoextraction reagent added plots, efficiency of Cd remediation might reach at 20%. However, in the second round, Cd concentration in Chinese cabbage was edible, even in the plots with assisted phytoextraction reagent added. Thus, multiple cropping hyperaccumulator with low accumulation crop could normally remediate contaminated soil and produce crop (obtain economic benefit) in one year, which may be one practical pathway of phytoremediating heavy metal contaminated soil in the future.  相似文献

Bruguiera gymnorhiza, an evergreen mangrove tree, is tolerant of bisphenol A (BPA) and has potential BPA removal capability. BPA is highly toxic to plants at high concentrations, wherein they exhibit damaged symptoms such as chlorosis, necrosis, and wilting. The LD50 of BPA toxicity for this plant was statistically estimated to be 39.97 mg L–1. B. gymnorhiza can reduce COD from 15408 ± 246 to 49 ± 30 mg L–1 by (approximately 99% reduction of the initial value) and can reduce content to levels below the industrial effluent standard of Thailand (<120 mg L–1) within 48 days. This plant can completely remove BPA from the solution within 51 days of treatment. Polysaccharides and organic acids were found in the solution and were caused by plant response to the toxicity of BPA. In addition, B. gymnorrhiza can also reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) and salinity in real wastewater. Therefore, B. gymnorrhiza has potential for removal of BPA and TDS in contaminated in wastewater.  相似文献

Chromium(VI) was removed from aqueous solution using sulfuric- and phosphoric-acid-activated Strychnine tree fruit shells (SSTFS and PSTFS) as biosorbents. Effects of various parameters such as adsorbent dose (0.02–0.1 g/L), temperature (303–333 K), agitation speed, solution pH (2–9), contact time, and initial Cr(VI) concentration (50–250 mg/L) were studied for a batch adsorption system. The optimum pH range for Cr(VI) adsorption was determined as 2. Equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed with isotherm models and the Langmuir and Freundlich models got best fitted values for SSTFS (R2 value – 0.994) and PSTFS (R2 value – 0.996), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of SSTFS and PSTFS were 100 and 142.85 mg/g, respectively. The biosorption process was well explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic model with higher R2 value (SSTFS – 0.996, PSTFS – 0.990) for both biosorbents. Characterization of biosorbents was done using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. Thermodynamic studies revealed the spontaneous, endothermic, and randomness in nature of the Cr(VI) adsorption process. Different concentrations of NaOH solutions were used to perform the desorption studies. The results demonstrated that both SSTFS and PSTFS can be used as an effective and low-cost biosorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Past studies have shown that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) washing can effectively remove heavy metals from contaminated soil. In this study, we used alkaline DOC solutions for remediation of arsenic (As)-contaminated soil (with an initial As concentration in the topsoil of 390 mg kg?1). The removal of As and the change in soil nutrients during DOC washing were studied for 60 min at pH 10 with a 60:1 liquid/soil ratio (v/m). Approximately 88% of As was removed by washing the soil twice using a 3000 mg L?1 DOC solution at 25°C. Following this treatment, the pH of the soil had increased from 5.6 to 9.2; organic carbon content had increased from 3.5% to 4.1%; cation exchange capacity, ammonium-N, and available phosphorus had increased to 2.3, 1.4, and 6.6 times their original levels, respectively; and exchangeable K, Na, Ca, and Mg had increased to 91, 6.1, 4.2, and 2.2 times their original levels, respectively. A sequential extraction investigation revealed that residual As and easily exchangeable As in the fraction were initially 10.2% and 9.2%, respectively, but that the former became the maximum remainder (64%) after the ultimate DOC washing.  相似文献
