Tuberculosis as a Cause of Upper Lobe Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis occurs frequently in association with pulmonary tuberculosis and is caused primarily by tuberculous bronchitis. It is common in all types of tuberculosis, especially in the fibroid lesion stage. It may occur with active tuberculosis and become part of the tuberculous picture. It may also occur with inactive tuberculosis and then present a distinct symptom complex. It is easy to diagnose. It is a relatively benign disease and usually no special treatment is needed; but when it becomes severe, pulmonary resection is the procedure of choice.

Nature and possible origin of Human Serum ribonuclease

Human Serum contains an acidic RNase which is glycoprotein in nature. It is thermostable at pH 4.2 and thermolabile at pH 8.5. It has a pH optimum at 6.5. Its activity either on poly (C) or RNA is endonucleolytic and is absolutely dependent on citrate or phosphate. It exhibits highest preference for the secondary phosphate esters of cytidine 3′-phosphates. It has no action on cytidine 2′:3′-cyclic phosphate. Poly (A) and poly (G) are not only refractory to its action, but also inhibit its action on poly (C). Its rate of hydrolysis of Poly (U) is about 2% of that of poly (C). It differs from bovine pancreatic RNase. It is, however, similar to human pancreatic RNase suggesting that its primary source is pancreas.

Human urine RNase was purified about 2000-fold. The preparation is free from phosphatase, phosphodiesterase and DNase activities. On electrophoresis through polyacrylamide gel at pH 8.3, it migrates toward the anode and stains with periodic acid-Schiff reagent, suggesting that it is acidic and glycoprotein in nature. Its isoelectric point is at pH 4.1. It has a molecular weight of about 21,500. It is thermostable at pH 4.2 and thermolabile at pH 8.5. It has a pH optimum at 6.5. It exhibits highest preference for cytidine 3'-phosphate linkages. Its activity on poly (C) is endonucleolytic. It cleaves poly (C) via intramolecular transphosphorylation. It has no action on cytidine 2': 3'-cyclic phosphate or uridine 2':3'-cyclic phosphate. Its rate of hydrolysis of poly (U) is less than 2% of that of poly C). Poly (A) and poly (G) are totally inert to its action. Its action on poly (C) is inhibited by poly (G), poly (A) and poly (U). It differs from bovine pancreatic Rnase A in its physical, chemical and catalytic properties. It is, however, similar to human serum and pancreatic RNase in all its properties, suggesting that pancreas is its likely source.

湘稻994的选育与特征特性及其开发利用

九里香蛋白多糖的抗生育及其它生物活性

九里香蛋白多糖有明显的抗生育作用,小鼠腹腔注射剂量2.08mg/kg,抗早孕率达72—83％。能增强小鼠腹腔巨噬细胞的吞噬功能,吞噬指数和吞噬百分数分别为对照组的5.42和1.70倍。能增加致敏动物血清中溶血素含量,小鼠HC_(50)为对照组的5.1倍。对大鼠新鲜红细胞有明显的促进凝集作用,凝集率为31.1％。能对抗环磷酰胺引起的白细胞减少,对照组和九里香蛋白多糖组白细胞下降率分别为42.7％和26.7％。对二甲苯所致小鼠耳部炎症也有对抗作用,抑制率达52％。有抗凝血作用,家兔静脉注射18mg/kg,凝血时间延长1.76分钟。毒性较低,小鼠腹腔注射LD_(50)为462±56.7mg/kg。     

A new, light-induced absorbance change related to the reaction-center of photosystem II

A new, light-induced absorbance change centered at 591 nm wasfound during analysis of the effect of preliminary illuminationon ferricyanide photoreduction in spinach chloroplasts. Thisabsorbance change is believed to come from a chloroplast componentfunctionally related to the reaction-center of photosystem IIfor the following reasons: (1) It occurred rapidly upon illumination.(2) It was driven by only PS-II light. (3) It was observed evenat 77 K. (4) It was observed with subchloroplast preparationsenriched in the reaction-center of PS-II. (Received October 23, 1978; )     

Non-Reciprocity of the Serological Relationship Between the Italian III Strain and Other Strains of Tobacco Mild Green Mosaic Virus

The Italian III strain (It III) of tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV) could not be distinguished from other strains of TMGMV using three antisera to this strain in precipitin, immunodiffusion gel tests, and ELISA. Antisera to the strains U2, PTMV, G-TAMV, and type TMGMV, however, were able to differentiate these strains from It III strain. The non-reciprocity of the serological relationship may be explained by assuming that It III lacks a specific epitope that the other strains have or that the, corresponding region in It III is not immunogenic.     

A new periplasmic protein of Escherichia coli which is synthesized in spheroplasts but not in intact cells.

The gene spy from Escherichia coli has been cloned and sequenced. It encodes a precursor of a so far unknown 139-residue, rather basic periplasmic protein. It was not detectable immunologically in intact cells but was produced abundantly in spheroplasts. It could be a stress protein specific for spheroplasting.     

THE ROLE OF GLUCOCORTICOID HORMONES IN THE CONTROL OF EPIDERMAL MITOSIS

It has previously been established that the epidermal chalone inhibits epidermal mitotic activity more powerfully in the presence of adrenalin, although adrenalin itself is not a mitotic inhibitor. It is now shown that in low concentrations hydrocortisone has little if any antimitotic activity, that when it is present together with chalone and adrenalin it does not markedly increase their antimitotic activity, but that it does act to prolong the mitotic depression which they induce. It is known that, without hydrocortisone, adrenalin rapidly escapes from epidermal cells so that the chalone action is weakened. It appears that the role of hydrocortisone may be to reduce the rate of adrenalin loss and thus to prolong the chalone-adrenalin activity. It is also shown that the rate of loss of adrenalin from epidermal cells is inhibited, though to a much lesser extent, in the presence of excess chalone.

Dinosaur biomechanics

Biomechanics has made large contributions to dinosaur biology. It has enabled us to estimate both the speeds at which dinosaurs generally moved and the maximum speeds of which they may have been capable. It has told us about the range of postures they could have adopted, for locomotion and for feeding, and about the problems of blood circulation in sauropods with very long necks. It has made it possible to calculate the bite forces of predators such as Tyrannosaurus, and the stresses they imposed on its skull; and to work out the remarkable chewing mechanism of hadrosaurs. It has shown us how some dinosaurs may have produced sounds. It has enabled us to estimate the effectiveness of weapons such as the tail spines of Stegosaurus. In recent years, techniques such as computational tomography and finite element analysis, and advances in computer modelling, have brought new opportunities. Biomechanists should, however, be especially cautious in their work on animals known only as fossils. The lack of living specimens and even soft tissues oblige us to make many assumptions. It is important to be aware of the often wide ranges of uncertainty that result.     

Hypoxic preconditioning is a phenomenon increasing tolerance of cardiomyocytes to hypoxia-reoxygenation

The work covers the problem of hypoxic preconditioning (HP) carried out in isolated cardiomyocytes. Papers on delayed HP in vivo are comparatively few, and only some single works are devoted to early preconditioning in vivo. It has been established that the HP limits necrosis and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes and improves contractility of the isolated heart after ischemia (hypoxia) and reperfusion (reoxygenation). It was found that adenosine was a trigger of iP in vitro. It was proved that NO* was a trigger of HP both in vitro and in vivo. It was shown that reactive oxygen species also were triggers of hypoxic preconditioning. It was shown that ERK1/2 and p38 kinase played important role in delayed HP in vitro.     

湖北钟祥一上新世猕猴牙齿

在湖北钟祥县发现一颗猕猴的上臼齿,它出自青白色泥质粘土层。时代为上新世。这颗牙齿构造较复杂,但已显示了现生猕猴牙齿的基本结构,因而订为一新种 Macaca youngi(sp.nov.)在我国所发现的第三纪猕猴化石较少,这颗牙齿的发现为研究猕猴的演化增添了一点资料。     

The Role of Zinc Atoms in Nuclease P1

A dextransucrase inhibitor, ribocitrin, was purified about 580-fold from a culture broth of Streptomyces neyagawaensis MF980-CF1 by combination chromatography.

Ribocitrin is a previously unknown type of oligosaccharide composed of ribose. It inhibited the crude preparation of dextransucrase noncompetitively with regard to sucrose and the inhibitory activity (Inh%) was sensitive to pH. It was very stable at alkaline pH values, but gradually lost its inhibitory activity as the acidity increased. It had no antimicrobial activity. It did not inhibit glycoside hydrolases and was not susceptible to the above enzymes. It had a low toxicity.

Plaque formation of Streptococcus mutans E49 on a smooth glass surface was diminished by ribocitrin and the colony form of this microorganism on Mitis Salivarius agar was evidently affected by ribocitrin.
