Little is known about the outcomes of treatment and patient's satisfaction with removable partial dentures in adult Croatian population. Therefore patient's satisfaction with their partial dentures in relation to some socio-economic variables was studied. Patient's satisfaction with denture retention, speech, aesthetics, comfort of wearing dentures, chewing ability was also studied in relation to different denture classification, construction, material, denture base shape (major connectors), denture support and the number of missing teeth. A total of 165 patients, 59 males and 105 females between 38 and 87 years took part in this study. A questionnaire, devised for a purpose of the study, was divided into three parts. In the first part, patients answered questions about age, gender, marital status, education, general health, socio-economic status, self-supporting life, period of tooth loss and number of previous denture experiences and in the second part, patients graded their partial dentures, depending on the level of satisfaction, by using a scale from 1 to 5. In the third part a dentist determined Kennedy classification and their modifications, denture material and denture support, denture base shape and the number of missing teeth and graded a denture construction. Influence of these factors on patient's satisfaction was analyzed. A majority of the examined patients were satisfied with the partial prosthesis, but a small amount of dissatisfaction existed. More then half of them scored all the examined parameters to the best score category. Considering chewing with lower partial dentures, women were more satisfied than men (p < 0.05). Patients with more missing teeth gave lower grades for the comfort of wearing dentures (p < 0.05). Patients of higher education gave lower grades (p < 0.05) for the aesthetics. Patients were not satisfied with speech if the dentist graded a construction of a lower partial denture low (p < 0.05). Dissatisfaction was related to mastication, aesthetics, number of missing teeth and ability of speech. These findings can aid a clinician in discussing a treatment plan and help a patient understand the risk of dissatisfaction in the presence of certain factors. 相似文献

In the 1975-2004 period, 130 cases of pterygium were estimated, 83 males and 47 females, on a small island Rab. Island Rab is located in the north part of the Adriatic sea, which has very high index of sun radiation. Pterygium is usually histopathologically defined as a hyperplasia of conjunctival tissue, elastoid degeneration of subepithelieum and fragmentation of Bowman's membrane. Our histopathological findings in 73 eyes are following: conjunctiva with neovascularisation, leukocyte margination and subepithelial basophilic degeneration, proliferation of conjunctival tissue, acanthosis and squamous metaplasia, and mucinous elements, focaly present plasma cells, focuses of increased pigmentisation in basal epithelial layers, tenon capsule with edema, diffuse neovascularisation and fragmentation of fibrils. These findings suggest that in severe cases of pterygium histopathologically exists precancerosis. In conclusion, on the basis of these histopathological findings, especially in the Tenon capsule, we suggest that for surgical procedure of pterygium the excision of the Tenon capsule, extensively under pterygium, is necessary. 相似文献

The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the extent to which an early Le Fort III osteotomy affects the position and eruption of the permanent maxillary first and second molars. To test the null hypothesis that there are no changes in eruption patterns, 31 patients diagnosed with craniosynostoses (13 with Crouzon's syndrome, nine with Apert's syndrome, eight with Pfeiffer's syndrome, and one with Carpenter's syndrome) with a mean age at the time of surgery of 5.3 +/- 1.3 years were studied. All patients underwent a Le Fort III osteotomy performed by a single surgeon to correct the anatomical deformity for functional and psychosocial reasons. Eighteen patients with craniosynostoses who had not been operated on (11 with Crouzon's syndrome, four with Apert's syndrome, and three with Pfeiffer's syndrome) served as controls; they had a mean age of 21.2 +/- 9.5 years. First and second molar positions and eruption patterns were assessed separately on panoramic radiographs by three observers. For the patients who underwent surgery, long-term evaluation showed that although 79 percent of all first molars erupted compared with 100 percent for the control group (p < 0.001), only 18 percent of all second permanent molars erupted compared with 89 percent for the control group (p < 0.0001). The authors conclude that in a significant minority of cases, early Le Fort III osteotomy affects first molar eruption, whereas the probability of second molar eruption is significantly decreased in the majority of cases. Therefore, Le Fort III osteotomy sites should be positioned distal to the second molar tooth buds. If this is not possible, patients, parents, and dental professionals should be made aware of these early postosteotomy sequelae so that later treatment planning can be enhanced. 相似文献

Myoelectrical activity of the stomach was estimated in healthy Croatian subjects using the latest multi-channel percutaneous electrogastrograph. The aim of the study was to determine normal values of gastric myoelectrical activity for the population of Croatia. The study included 120 healthy subjects of both sexes, various age groups, body mass index values, and mode of lead placement. The measurement was performed 60 min before and 60 min after test meal. The following parameters of gastric myoelectrical activity were analyzed: dominant frequency (DF, c/min); dominant frequency within normal range (DFNR, %); coefficient of variation for dominant frequency (CVDF); dominant strength (DS, mV); postprandial increase intensity in dominant strength (PPIIDS; %); bradygastria (c/min, %); tachygastria (c/min, %); and arrhythmia. DF for the study group as a whole was around 3 cpm, at the normal range midpoint, and all other parameters were within the normal limits. On postprandial measurement, the rate of arrhythmias showed a significant decline. Age was found to influence DF, CVDF and arrhythmia in preprandial but not in postprandial period, whereas sex influenced DF, DS and bradygastria in preprandial period, and DF, CVDF, PPIIDS and tachygastria in postprandial period. The mode of lead placement had no impact on the electrogastrographic parameters observed. The values of gastric myoelectrical activity recorded in healthy Croatian subjects were within the normal range of the values defined by previous studies across Europe. 相似文献

The aim of this paper is to investigate the incidence of smoking and changes in smoking habits in Croatia during a 5-year period. Data from the Croatian Adult Health Study of 2003 and 2008 was used for the study (N = 3229). The results of this study suggest that the incidence of smoking is the highest in youngest men and decreases with age. In ages 35 to 64 and older than 65 the incidence was higher in women than men. The cumulative smoking incidence is low in Croatia, but particularly alarming is a higher incidence in women than in men. 相似文献

Impacted third molars affect 15%–20% of modern Americans and Western Europeans. In contrast, third molar impactions have not been reported in the early hominid fossil record. It is uncertain whether the lack of reports reflects an absence of impactions or a failure to recognize them. This communication is intended to raise awareness of the possibility of impactions by describing the appearance of impacted teeth and by noting two possible instances of impaction in early hominids. Specifically, the mandibular third molars of the Sterkfontein specimen, STS52b (Australopithecus africanus), and the left maxillary third molar of the Lake Turkana specimen, KNM-WT17400 (Australopithecus boisei), are positioned in a manner which suggests that they would not have erupted normally. Both specimens also exhibit strong crowding of the anterior dentition, providing further support for the view that these individuals lacked sufficient space for normal eruption of the third molars. Other published reports of dental crowding in the hominid fossil record are noted, and it is suggested that more attention be paid to dental impaction and dental crowding in hominid evolution. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to reveal the CFTR gene mutation status in the Croatian population as well as to establish the haplotypes associated with cystic fibrosis (CF) and those associated with specific gene mutations. A total of 48 unrelated CF patients from Croatia were examined. Among 96 tested alleles, we found nine different mutations: DeltaF508, 58.33%; G542X, 3.12%; N1303K, 2.08%; R1162X; 621 + 1G --> T; G85E; Y569C; E585X; and S466X, 1.04%. Analysis of three polymorphic loci revealed 15 different haplotypes. Two of them (21-23-13 and 21-17-13) occurred with a higher frequency (40% and 24%). Both of these haplotypes also carried a CFTR gene mutation (DeltaF508 or G542X) on 27 out of 32 chromosomes. Among 12 (of all together 29) CF alleles on which no mutations were found, we detected 10 different haplotypes. Because there are still no published data on the distribution of polymorphic loci in Croatia, nor haplotypes associated with mutations in the CFTR gene, our results greatly contribute to knowledge regarding the genetic background of CF in this region. 相似文献

This study investigated 5-year cumulative incidence of unhealthy dietary habits across various gender and age groups within the CroHort study, a repeated cross-sectional survey of Croatian adults. The results monitoring the frequency of certain foodstuffs consumption indicate that 10.6% of examinees (10.9% of men, and 9.1% of women) reported worsening of their dietary habits in 2008 as compared to 2003. The cumulative incidence of unhealthy diet was higher in men than in women, and was highest in younger age-groups (18-34 years), both in men and women. The public health programmes should be strengthened in a way which would put a special emphasis on education of younger adults, especially males, on nutrition health impact and healthy diet principles. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze gender and age differences in physical inactivity in Croatia and physical inactivity pattern changes during the five-year period. The study is based on the data obtained from the Croatian Adult Health Cohort Study which was carried out in 2003 and 2008. The prevalence of physical inactivity in 2008 was 37.7%, 36.8% in men and 38.1% in women. In both study waves the prevalence was increasing with age in both men and women. The prevalence is statistically significantly higher in subjects older than 64 years than in younger age groups. The incidence of physical inactivity in the five-year period in total was 29.9%, 27.2% in men and 31.1% in women. The increase in prevalence of physical inactivity despite the number of preventive activities carried out periodically emphasizes the need for systematic and comprehensive approach in increasing the number of regularly physically active individuals. 相似文献

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (TIDM) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of pancreatic p cells. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a pleotropic cytokine with potent immunomodulatory and inflammatory activity. Association studies of TNF polymorphisms and type 1 diabetes (TIDM) frequently demonstrated TNF involvement with TIDM. Although TNF may play an important role in the pathogenesis of TIDM, the genetic association of TNF región with the disease has not been conclusive because of the strong linkage disequilibrium with HLA genes. In this study, we examined two TNF promoter variants (rs 1800629 at position -308, and rs361525 at position -238) for TIDM association in 233 patients and 144 controls from the population of South Croatia. A higher frequency of TNF -308 A alíele and also, a more frequent specific -308A -238G haplotype in TIDM patients were observed with a limited significance. However, we did not find strong evidence of association of TNF promoter polymorphisms with TIDM. In order to elucidate the trae contribution of TNF to TIDM susceptibility in our population, more comprehensive studies with HLA adjustment in a larger sample are required. 相似文献

Rapid population growth in the Third World is a major social and economic problem, with attempts having been made to reduce the rapid growth rate through national family planning programs. Policies used by the programs, especially those concerning female sterilization, need to be examined to determine whether they are ethically acceptable. Such an analysis of the ethics of family planning policies raises awareness of not only the population problem, but also of the potential which exists for violating human rights when attempts are made to reduce population growth. The analysis also points to the need which exists in the Third World to create family planning programs which protect basic human rights. The population problem, reproductive rights, family planning programs, ethical principles, the ethics of incentives, alternatives, and decreasing maternal mortality are discussed. 相似文献

Alcohol consumption is traditionally part of most human cultures, and with the onset of industrial revolution it was recognized as a health and social problem. The aim of this article is to investigate cumulative incidence of alcohol consumption in Croatia. Data were obtained from the Croatian Adult health Survey in 2003 followed by 2008. The cohort consisted of 3229 participants. Questions regarding alcohol consumption were calculated into two factors describing existence or non-existence of risk behavior. Results revealed higher incidence of risk alcohol consumption in man than in women and highest in the 35-65, age group. Due to the some study limitations results might be underestimated. Present problem of alcohol is alarming, even more so, in women's population it might be only the tip of the iceberg. Cultural and regional differences should be taken into account when educational programs are constructed, especially due to the different type of alcohol consumed. 相似文献

Hyperuricemia may have an important role in metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Elevated serum uric acid concentration has been shown to be the strong predictor of cardiovascular mortality in several recently published studies. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of hyperuricemia in general Croatian population and to investigate the association of serum uric acid with glucose and lipids. This was a retrospective cross-sectional study on 6,476 consecutive adults. Prevalence of hyperuricemia was 13.9% in general population and it was significantly higher in males, than in females (26% vs. 6%; p < 0.001). Median uric acid concentration was higher in males than in females (343 vs. 238 micromol/L; p < 0.001). Age, glucose and lipid parameters did not correlate with uric acid. In hyperuricemic subjects, increased concentrations of glucose (33.1% vs. 13.1%; p < 0.001), triglycerides (46.9% vs. 17.6%; p < 0.001), total cholesterol (69.6% vs. 51.9%; p < 0.001), LDL-cholesterol (64.5% vs. 46.4%; p < 0.001) and decreased concentration of HDL-cholesterol (24.3% vs. 13.0%; p < 0.001) were more prevalent than in subjects with normal serum concentrations of uric acid. Hyperuricemia is highly prevalent in Croatian general population and it aggregates with hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. 相似文献

The frequency of missing third molars is about eight per cent per quadrant in a sample of 490 males of the mixed White/Negro/Indian population of Natal, Brazil. Absence of the four third molars appears in two per cent of the individuals of the sample. The degree of asymmetry for the trait was not marked. No differences were observed when the persons were separated on morphological grounds as Whites or Negroids suggesting that these segregants may be genetically homogeneous in relation to this and other characteristics. 相似文献
