Analyses of adult worms of Skrjabingylus nasicola occurring in the nasal sinuses of the weasel Mustela nivalis from three localities in the British Isles show that the intensity of infestation can be correlated with increasing severity of skull damage, which in turn increases as the weasel ages. It is suggested that, apart from hormonal differences, the smaller sized female skull is likely to be linked with lower levels of infestation in female compared with male weasels. Also a reduction in mean worm length in female skulls and in heavy infestations of S. nasicola is probably the result of a "crowding effect", previously described for other helminth infections in the definitive host. Crowding appears to have no effect on the sex ratio of worm populations, although there is a tendency for the ratio of female: male worms to increase in female weasels. Reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献

From 1985 to 1987, leaves of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) cv. Grasslands Huia were examined for damage by pests and fungal diseases on seven occasions at up to 16 sites in England and Wales. Pest damage was recorded at all sites on all sampling dates. Over all sampling dates, the mean number of leaves damaged by slugs ranged from 23% to 67%, and that by weevils ( Sitona spp.) ranged from 3% to 62%. Also, up to 30% of leaves were damaged by other, unidentified pests. At individual sites, total pest damage frequently exceeded 90% of leaves. The area of leaf damaged by pests ranged from 2 - 12%. Fungal diseases were recorded in July and September but not in May, and were more prevalent in September 1985 than in September 1986 or 1987. Black blotch ( Cymadothea trifolii ) was the most frequently recorded disease, and the mean number of leaves damaged ranged from 4% to 21%. The mean area of leaves covered by lesions was 1–2%. Infections by viruses were assessed on two occasions, using indicator plants and electron microscopy, and only a very low incidence of arabis mosaic virus and red clover necrotic mosaic virus was recorded.  相似文献

In Africa, no other nonhuman animal fulfils the role of ecosystem engineers to the extent of the elephant. However, little is known about the relationship between elephant modified habitats and species composition of other animals. Our objective was to sample the herpetofauna within an Acacia habitat that varied in the degree of elephant impact. If elephant foraging was only modifying but not degrading or enriching the habitat, then herpetofauna species abundance and richness were predicted to be similar in elephant damaged and elephant excluded areas. We conducted this study at Endarakwai Ranch in northeastern Tanzania for 6 months in 2007 and 2008. We sampled herpetofaunal species richness and abundance within high, medium and low elephant damaged areas and in a plot that excluded elephants. Areas of heavy damage yielded higher species richness than the exclusion plot. Species diversity did not differ between the damaged areas and the exclusion plot. Frogs were more abundant in areas of high damage; in contrast, toads were found the least in high damage areas. The results support the notion that free ranging elephants influence herpetofaunal species distribution by creating habitat complexity through modifying the woodland area.  相似文献

The mean year-class ratio in 6 samples of weasels (total n = 477) ranged from 59% to 84% young, and mean age from 0.79 to 1.16 yr. There was no difference in age structure between samples from 5 game estates and 1 reserve. Mean annual mortality of weasels of both sexes and all ages was 75-90%. In 12 pregnant weasels the mean number of embryos, observed from April to June, was 5.6. There was a definite anoestrous season in winter. Records of the number of weasels killed on game estates show that weasels and stoats reacted differently to the first outbreak of myxomatosis in England in 1954; and that weasel populations are capable of enormous sudden increases (usually associated with "mouse years"). These increases are probably due largely to summer litters produced by precocious juveniles, and also to some adults breeding a second time (both possibilities confirmed from ovarian histology on this material). Traditional gamekeeping practice may influence the seasonal pattern of mortality of weasels (highest in spring) but its effects are probably short-lived.  相似文献

Assessment of locomotor modes in fossil taxa must often be made on the basis of heavily fragmented postcranial material. Previous authors have used quantitative methods to determine locomotor function from whole postcranial elements. The goals of this project were to assess the ability of element shape to discern between locomotor modes through landmark analysis, and to apply the results to assessment of fossils. Results suggest that element shape is a good predictor of function, but that different elements have different predictive capacities for each locomotor mode. Additionally, a relationship between size and shape exists that appears to drive morphological differentiation in the group. Finally, data from the extant sample were applied to fossil material of the extinct Plio-Pleistocene taxon Trigonictis . The results suggest that the locomotor mode of Trigonictis was generalized and probably an intermediate between the half-bound locomotion found in weasels and ferrets and the scansorial locomotion of martens and fishers.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 150 , 895–914.  相似文献

Aim Increases in annual mean temperature in the course of current climate change are expected to facilitate mass species migration towards higher altitudes and latitudes. However, this migration may be slowed, or even temporarily reversed, by infrequent and unpredictable episodes of low winter temperatures. Iran experienced a severe cold wave in January and February 2008, giving an opportunity to observe the effects on a large number of woody plant species, many growing further north than their natural ranges. Location The study was carried out in the National Botanical Garden of Iran (35°44′20.06″ N; 51°10′25.66″ E). Method To estimate the damage caused to each individual woody plant in the garden, we adopted the following protocol; at the start of the growing season, at the end of March and beginning of April 2008, all woody species were inspected for damage. In the case of evergreens this took the form of obvious damage to foliage, usually manifested as severe browning. In the case of deciduous species, damage was recognized by the failure of all or part of the plant to produce new leaves; all affected individual plants were labelled. In July all labelled plants were rechecked and, based on whole or partial above‐ground die‐back, a final list of damaged individuals was produced. Results As expected, the majority of native and exotic species introduced from cold temperate habitats showed no freezing injuries. Many woody species in the garden were damaged or killed, despite their previous survival and growth, in many cases for up to 40 years. The majority of taxa (101 out of a total of 145) that suffered freezing‐induced damage were evergreens. Main conclusions The results indicate that despite an increase in mean annual temperature, unpredictable lethal cold waves may retard the expansion of plants towards higher altitudes and latitudes. Broadleaved evergreen species from warm climates were particularly badly affected, with many species suffering high rates of mortality.  相似文献

Traps baited with synthetic aggregation pheromone and fermenting bread dough were used to monitor seasonal incidence and abundance of the ripening fruit pests, Carpophilus hemipterus (L.), C. mutilatus Erichson and C. davidsoni Dobson in stone fruit orchards in the Leeton district of southern New South Wales during five seasons (1991–96). Adult beetles were trapped from September-May, but abundance varied considerably between years with the amount of rainfall in December-January having a major influence on population size and damage potential during the canning peach harvest (late February-March). Below average rainfall in December-January was associated with mean trap catches of<10 beetles/trap/week in low dose pheromone traps during the harvest period in 1991/92 and 1993/94 and no reported damage to ripening fruit. Rainfall in December-January 1992/93 was more than double the average and mean trap catches ranged from 8–27 beetles/week during the harvest period with substantial damage to the peach crop. December-January rainfall was also above average in 1994/95 and 1995/96 and means of 50–300 beetles/trap/week were recorded in high dose pheromone traps during harvest periods. Carpophilus spp. caused economic damage to peach crops in both seasons. These data indicate that it may be possible to predict the likelihood of Carpophilus beetle damage to ripening stone fruit in inland areas of southern Australia, by routine pheromone-based monitoring of beetle populations and summer temperatures and rainfall.  相似文献

StoatsMustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758 and weaselsMustela nivalis Linnaeus, 1766 exploit the same array of prey species at different frequencies according to body size. The rabbitOryctolagus cuniculus, which typically is the dominant prey for stoats in temperate parts of Europe, is absent in Denmark. The present study based on gastrointestinal tract contents examines the food habits of sympatric stoats (n=112) and weasels (n=132) from Denmark. Rodents were the most important prey group for both stoats and weasels, constituting 77% and 84% of their diet respectively, expressed as frequency of occurrence. No differences were detected in the proportions of major prey groups between sexes within species, but between species the diets differed. Stoats ate birds and birds’ eggs more often than weasels did, while weasels ate more insectivores. Stoats ate more oftenMicrotus voles and water voleArvicola terrestris than weasels did, while weasels ate more bank voleClethrionomys glareolus and moleTalpa europaea. There was a larger dietary overlap between sympatric stoats and weasels in Denmark than in other dietary studies in areas where rabbits were available.  相似文献

One of the most popular hypotheses to explain the 3–5 year vole cycle in Fennoscandia is the predation hypothesis, which emphasises the role of specialist predators, especially small mustelids, in driving the microtine rodent cycle. I have tested this hypothesis in a field experiment with a focus on the interaction between the least weasel ( Mustela nivalis nivalis L.) and the field vole ( Microtus agrestis L.). The test involved a perturbation of the natural vole-weasel dynamics by increasing the numbers of predators. In natural cyclic dynamics, the numbers of weasels follow the numbers of voles with a time lag; the delay in the numerical response of the predators essentially leads to the cyclic dynamics. In this experiment, I attempted to eliminate the time lag in predators' numerical response by adding weasels into the system at a point when vole numbers are increasing but weasels are still scarce. The experiment was conducted in three experimental islands (each 5–10 km2) using adjacent comparable islands as controls. Results of the experiment did not provide strong evidence either for or against the hypothesis. Two of three experimental areas did not show a treatment effect, while one area showed an effect in both population dynamics and population structure. Unexpectedly, the previously clearly cyclic dynamics were much less regular in the study areas (and elsewhere in southern Finland) during the period of the experiment.  相似文献

While much work has been performed to quantify the extent of bone damage, its effects on the mechanical integrity of the tissue and its biological impact, the set of factors which gives forth to microdamage are nebulous, particularly the compositional properties local to microdamage. In this context, the current study tested the hypothesis that microcracks initiate within more mineralized regions of bone. Cortical bone specimens were taken from human male donors aged 31, 38, 53, 64, 71, and 84 years at the mid femoral diaphysis in a plane parallel to the osteonal orientation. The mineralization was assessed in a spatially resolved manner using Raman microspectroscopy. Arrays of measurements were taken over the entire area (i.e. global scans) of each sample followed by measurements in the vicinity of microcracks (i.e. local scans). Histograms of mineralization were constructed for global and local scans to determine whether the mineralization of damaged loci differed from the mean overall mineralization. Statistical analysis of this data revealed that the mean mineralization of damaged loci was significantly greater (P < 0.05) than the overall mineralization for each donor, indicating that there exists a highly-mineralized 'brittle volume' in bone. The presence of this damage prone 'brittle volume' has future implications for the assessment of fracture susceptibility.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of inter-tree variation in the bud phenology of Picea glehnii on susceptibility to the shoot-boring sawfly. Pleroneura piceae , and found that individual susceptibility fluctuates from year to year. The mechanism for the fluctuation between 1994 and 1997 is discussed.
Inter-tree difference in the time of bud swelling is probably genetically based, since most of the trees that began to swell early in 1995 also swelled early in 1997, and those that began to swell late also did so in both years. Damage severity of each tree was evaluated by damage ratio: proportion of the number of damaged current shoots on the previous year's leader shoot. The rank of the bud swelling phenology of a tree was positively correlated to the rank of the damage ratio. This means that genetically based differences in phenology could explain why some trees are subjected to higher levels of herbivory than others.
There was year-to-year variation in the damage severity for each tree. Nevertheless, no significant differences were found in the rank of the damage ratio between years. However the standard deviation of the damage ratios of each tree was highest for trees of intermediate rank. The skew of the frequency distribution of damage ratio was negatively correlated to the cumulated daily mean temperature in spring, which means that the spruce is more susceptible to the sawfly in warm springs than in cool springs.
The mean growth rate of the lightly damaged trees increased constantly, while that of the heavily damaged trees seemed to reach a limit and then became lower than that of the lightly damaged trees.  相似文献

In this study we examined temporal and geographical variations in a sample of 124 skulls of the weasel Mustela nivalis and 146 skulls of the stoat M. erminea, collected in Sweden between 1959-1992 and 1913-1990, respectively. We used Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to combine the effects of latitude, longitude, year of collection, mean ambient temperature and Net Primary Productivity (NPP). The first principal component (PC1) contained latitude, ambient temperature and NPP and was significantly and positively related to male (but not female) skull size of both stoats and weasels. None of the other factors or their interactions were significantly related to skull size.We conclude that ambient temperature, either directly through energy savings, or indirectly through improved food availability (increased NPP), had a significant effect on determining body size of male stoats and weasels in Sweden. Our results support the hypothesis that male and female of these species are affected by different selection pressures and thus react differently to changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Abstract:  Use of the predatory mite Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) (Acari, Phytoseiidae) and a fleece cover in combination with pyrethrum application showed potential for control of two important pests in organic production of strawberry ( Fragaria  ×  ananassa Duch.), although there were some unexpected interactions between pyrethrum and the release of N. cucumeris that need to be investigated further. Two cultivars, Honeoye and Cavendish, were treated with pyrethrum with or without fleece to control strawberry blossom weevils [ Anthonomus rubi Herbst. (Col., Curculionidae)] and N. cucumeris was released to control strawberry mites [ Phytonemus pallidus (Banks) (Acari, Tarsonemidae)]. Number of strawberry mites, number of flower buds damaged by the weevil, incidence of grey mould and powdery mildew, and fruit yield were measured in two consecutive fruiting seasons. In Honeoye, the fleece in combination with pyrethrum decreased the proportion of damaged buds by 11–23% and increased yield by 49–91 g per plant. When pyrethrum was used alone it did not influence the number of damaged buds or yield. This indicates that the combined treatment was more effective because of the fleece. In Cavendish, the fleece and pyrethrum treatments were not found to be effective. Almost no P. pallidus was found in Honeoye and the results were not analysable. In plots with Cavendish where N. cucumeris had been released, there were approximately 50% fewer P. pallidus from the end of August onwards in 2003. However, this response did not significantly influence the succeeding year's yield. The number of fruits infected with fungi was very low and no effects were observed for any of the treatments.  相似文献

Information on the food habits of stoats and weasels was obtained chiefly from gut analyses of carcasses sent from various parts of Britain. Lagomorphs, small rodents and birds form the bulk of the food taken by these predators. The three food classes appear to be equally important to stoats, whereas weasels obtain nearly half of their food from small rodents. Microtus was the most important small rodent in the diet of both stoats and weasels. Game birds were taken more by stoats than weasels; the chief bird prey of the latter was passerines.  相似文献

Summary The average respiratory quotient of weasels was 0.73. There were significant differences in average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) between the sexes and six experimental temperatures. As temperature decreased the mean ADMR increased, with a relatively greater rise for females. Regression equations of ADMR on temperature were Y=483.2–9.6X kcal/kg/day for males, and Y=625.3–15.0X kcal/kg/day for females. The minimum metabolic rate measured for males was 6.6 kcal/kg/h, and the maximum 25.7 kcal/kg/h. The relationship between ADMR and body weight varied with different temperatures, but was consistent with the hypothesis that ADMR was proportional to metabolic weight. The energetic costs of activity for my captive weasels were more than 20% of their daily total energy expenditure. Data on metabolism supported the conclusion that long, thin mustelids lose heat faster than normally-shaped mammals of the same weight. The calorific contents of foods, faeces and urine from feeding trials were determined. There were significant differences in the calorific content of faeces between the sexes, and of faeces and urine between diets.Four natural foods (Microtus, Apodemus, rabbit, starling) were offered during feeding trials. Daily food consumption varied between the diets, but small weasels always ate relatively more than large ones. Mean consumption was 0.33 g/g/day for males, and 0.36 g/g/day for females. Weasels on low-bulk diets (rabbit, starling) lost at least as much energy in urine as in faeces. There were significant differences in assimilation efficiency between the sexes and diets. The average efficiency for males was 78.2%, and 79.8% for females. Bulky foods lowered assimilation efficiencies by up to 9%.Daily energy requirements for maintenance calculated from ADMR data were compared with those from feeding trials. On the Microtus diet weasels expended 18.6–30.1% more energy on maintenance than predicted by the ADMR results, whereas on the other diets they expended 2.7–31.4% less energy. Estimates from ADMR data were probably more accurate.  相似文献

Popcorn ear damage by insects and mycotoxin levels in kernels were monitored in several commercial popcorn fields in central Illinois over a 4-year period. Aflatoxin was rare, but fumonisin and deoxynivalenol (DON) were commonly encountered each year, and occurred at mean levels in fields up to 1.7 mg/kg (sample max. 2.77 mg/kg) and 1.9 mg/kg (sample max. 2.66 mg/kg), respectively. Neither fumonisin nor DON levels were significantly correlated with the percent of ears with visibly moldy insect-damaged kernels. Significant correlations were noted for the percent of ears with early caterpillar damage and both fumonisin and DON levels overall for some years and at specific sites in other years. Fumonisin levels were generally more highly correlated with insect damage than DON levels. Insect damaged kernels had 100- to 500-fold or greater levels of fumonisin compared to noninsect-damaged kernels, while DON levels were closer to 10- to 30-fold higher in insect damaged versus nondamaged kernels. A high percentage of DON-contaminated kernels were not insect damaged in 2007 and 2008. In some cases, differing mycotoxin levels for the same hybrid and same year planted at different locations appeared to be due to the prior crop. Higher DON levels in 2008 than other years were most likely associated with higher levels of rainfall and cooler temperatures than average during ear fill. While kernel sorters are reported to remove mycotoxin-contaminated popcorn kernels to acceptible levels, consideration of environmental factors that promote mycotoxins in popcorn should result in more effective control measures in the field.  相似文献

Growth under elevated [CO2] promoted spring frost damage in field grown seedlings of snow gum ( Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng.), one of the most frost tolerant of eucalypts. Freezing began in the leaf midvein, consistent with it being a major site of frost damage under field conditions. The average ice nucleation temperature was higher in leaves grown under elevated [CO2] (– 5·7 °C versus – 4·3 °C), consistent with the greater incidence of frost damage in these leaves (34% versus 68% of leaves damaged). These results have major implications for agriculture, forestry and vegetation dynamics, as an increase in frost susceptibility may reduce potential gains in productivity from CO2 fertilization and may affect predictions of vegetation change based on increasing temperature.  相似文献

Fluoride, originating either naturally from rocks and soil or from modern industrial processes, can cause severe and crippling damage in humans and animals. In vertebrate species, the skeleton is particularly susceptible; outgrowths on bones and fusion of joints cause lameness and lack of mobility. Teeth may be badly worn and damaged, often losing their enamel. The occurrence and effects of fluoride in wild mammals are reviewed.  相似文献

Abstract Canopy damage to coastal native vegetation was surveyed at Norah, Wybung and Wamberal Heads and at Little Beach on the central New South Wales coast in 1987. This preceded the commissioning of an ocean sewerage outfall at Norah Head in 1988, but postdated the commissioning of other outfalls in the region. Damage to the canopy of shrub species was assessed at the whole-plant level using a visual score. The method of scoring for canopy damage was tested for repeatability between observers; the average deviation between means was 5%, and the maximum deviation was 10% of the value of the mean. Mean per cent canopy damage scored for shrubs of various species at these sites ranged from negligible to very heavy. Comparison between sites and aspects was limited to Banksia integrifolia. Stands of this species on the southern side of Norah and Wybung Heads had approximately double the canopy damage of those on the northern side; this difference was significant. To confirm the patterns of damage seen at the whole-canopy level, the fate of tagged shoots of B. integrifolia was followed for 4 months. These shoots were also more damaged on the southern side than on the northern side of the two headlands. Analysis of wind speed and direction at Norah Head showed that the southern side of the headland received substantially more strong winds (>21 km h?1) than the northern side. Airborne salt spray is known to be carried mainly in winds above this speed. In cases where 20 or more individuals of a species were found at a site, mathematical models relating the canopy damage of each plant to wind exposure, distance from the sea, and slope were investigated. Of 15 such cases, 13 significant models were found, with exposure being the major significant factor in accounting for variation in the data. Distance from the sea was only significant twice, and slope not at all. The pattern of damage, and its relationship to wind speed, direction, and exposure, are consistent with salt-spray being the major cause of leaf and shoot death at these sites. The sample sizes necessary to detect future changes of given magnitude to canopy damage were calculated.  相似文献

We investigated seed dispersal by two sympatric mustelid species, the Japanese marten (Martes melampus) and Japanese weasel (Mustela itatsi), along an intercity forest path in western Tokyo, central Japan, from Jul 2007 to Jul 2008. We aimed to investigate the effect of food/habitat preference of these mustelids (martens are semi-arboreal frugivores while weasels are terrestrial carnivores) on their seed dispersal characteristics, which determine their efficacy as seed dispersers. In total, we analyzed 478 fecal samples collected from the two mustelids (Nmarten = 381, Nweasel = 97). The proportions of feces containing seeds for martens and weasels were 81.4% and 55.7%, respectively. The number of plant species whose seeds were found within the feces were 28 and 17, respectively. Almost all seeds within feces of both mustelids were intact. The number of plant species whose seeds were found within a single fecal sample ranged from one to four, but no significant difference was detected between the two mustelids. However, marten feces contained a significantly greater number of seeds of most plant species as well as total number of seeds than did weasel feces. The numbers of plant species and seeds represented in marten feces varied seasonally, but those represented in weasel feces did not. Our findings suggest the possibility that both mustelids act in some ways as seed dispersers, although martens seem to disperse a greater diversity and total amount of seeds.  相似文献
