A new chigger mite Chiroptella baliensis n. sp. is described based on material from the diadem leaf-nosed bat Hipposideros diadema (Geoffroy) (Hipposideridae) in Bali Island (Lesser Sunda Islands, East Indonesia). With this newly described species, the genus Chiroptella includes 22 species, 13 in the subgenus Chiroptella Vercammen-Grandjean, 1960 (sensu stricto), and 9 in the subgenus Neosomia Vercammen-Grandjean, 1968. Species of Chiroptella are distributed throughout the Ethiopian region, the Oriental region, and the Australian region (and only marginally throughout the Palaearctic region) and are all associated with several families of bats. The paper also provides a key to all members of the genus and the new combinations for two species originally described as Chiroptella.

New records of Cynipid gall wasps and inquilines for the Italian peninsula and Sicily and their new host plants for the Palaearctic Region are listed and commented on. Among them we find: Cerroneuroterus cerrifloralis (Müllner 1901) as new for Italy and new for the Palaearctic region as host on Quercus suber; Andricus multiplicatus Giraud 1859 on Q. suber, as new host for the Palaearctic region; Aylax papaveris (Perris 1839), reported in Italy over a century ago, but later overlooked; Cerroneuroterus minutulus (Giraud 1859), also reported more than a century ago from Sicily, but later overlooked. Among the inquilines are here listed: Synergus variabilis Mayr 1872, emerged from Janetia cerris (Kollar 1850) galls (Diptera Cecidomyiidae), and found for the first time in the Palaearctic Region as host on Q. suber; Saphonecrus haimi (Mayr 1872) and Saphonecrus barbotini Pujade-Villar & Nieves-Aldrey 1986, are new records for Italy.  相似文献

The hoverfly Trichopsomyia ochrozona (Stackelberg, 1952) (Diptera: Syrphidae) is recorded for the first time from Iran. An illustrated key to the West Palaearctic species of Trichopsomyia is presented. Illustrations of the puparium of Trichopsomyia joratensis Goeldin, 1997 and the larva and puparium of T. ochrozona are given and their larval and adult habitats are described. A short discussion is given on the known larval habitat of other West Palaearctic Trichopsomyia species. Some of the synonyms have been evaluated and Pipiza melancholica Meigen, 1822 is withdrawn from synonymy of Trichopsomyia flavitarsis (Meigen, 1822) and is considered as a junior synonym of Musca viduata Linnaeus, 1758 syn. nov.  相似文献

Abstract We studied the historical biogeography of a group of butterflies in the Holarctic region belonging to the genus Coenonympha (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Coenonymphina), based on a phylogenetic hypothesis estimated from three genes. The genus is distributed mainly in the Palaearctic region, with two species extending into the Nearctic region. The tree is generally well supported and shows that Coenonympha is paraphyletic with respect to Lyela ( syn.n. ) and Triphysa ( syn.n. ), and we hence synonymize the latter two with Coenonympha. Within Coenonympha we identify three species groups, the tullia, glycerion and hero groups. The North American tullia exemplars are not sister to the Eurasian ones. A diva analysis indicates that the ancestor of the group was present in the Central Palaearctic or Central Palaeartic + Western Palaearctic or Central Palaearctic + Eastern Palaearctic. We conclude that the most likely origin of extant members of Coenonympha was in the Central Asian mountains. The tullia and hero groups started diverging in Europe following dispersal into the region. There have been two independent colonizations into Africa. The drying up of the Mediterranean during the Messinian period probably played an important role, allowing colonization into the Mediterranean islands and Africa.  相似文献

Tetartopeus frischi sp. n. from the U?ak Province in western Anatolia, Turkey, is described and illustrated. Additional records of ten species of Tetartopeus are reported from the West Palaearctic region, among them several new country records. An updated key to the Turkish species of Tetartopeus is presented.

Waders (Charadrii) were counted regularly on two stretches of coastline, totalling 5,6 km, on the Cape Peninsula from January 1975 to July 1976. Eight Palaearctic species and seven indigenous species were observed. Arrival of migrants extended from mid-August to January. Autumn departure of Curlew Sandpipers Calidris ferruginea occurred approximately six weeks before departure of Sanderlings C. albu. No overwintering populations of migrant waders were observed. Information is presented which suggests that overwintering Turnstones Arenaria interpres, but not Sanderlings, Maycongregate at a sheltered coastal wetland. Observations of marked birds suggest that individual Sanderlings regularly use particular feeding localities. Populations of indigenous waders showed little seasonal variation in numbers, Flocking was observed in winter.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of Dianemobius fascipes (Walker, 1869) from Nepal (Kathmandu) and D. nigrofasciatus (Matsumura, 1904) from Japan (Akiruno City near Tokyo), Korea (Incheon near Seoul), and Russia (Novosibirsk) is discussed based on comparison of acoustic calling signals. The sounds of D. nigrofasciatus are described for the first time from the northwesternmost locality of its range in southern Siberia, Russia. The signals of males from Russia, Japan, and Korea show no differences in their amplitude-time characteristics but they differ slightly from the signals of D. fascipes from Nepal. There are no morphological differences between these taxa except for the color of the hind tibia. The male genitalia are similar, slightly differing only in the degree of development of the ectoparamere lobe. Thus we suggest that D. fascipes should be considered a polytypic species with two subspecies: the southern nominotypical subspecies D. fascipes fascipes stat. resurr., common in the Oriental Region, and the northern subspecies D. fascipes nigrofasciatus stat. resurr., known from the eastern part of the Palaearctic Region.

ABSTRACT

Capsule: The existence of clinal variation in the colour polymorphism of the Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus in its breeding area in the Palaearctic is probably caused by the influence of precipitation and the detectability of the two morphs in different light conditions.

Aims: To test whether Booted Eagles shows clinal variation in colour polymorphism along its breeding range in the Palaearctic and to test if there was selective or/and environmental pressure in the polymorphism throughout its breeding range in the Palaearctic and South Africa.

Methods: Published data were obtained on the proportion of colour morphs of seven study populations within the Palaearctic and South Africa, as well as those of 11 populations on the Iberian Peninsula, and the variation was examined in relation to longitude, latitude, and environmental and meteorological variables.

Results: There was a strong relationship between the proportion of the dark morph and longitude from west to east. In the Palaearctic and South Africa, there was a strong positive relationship between the proportion of the dark morph and the amount of rainfall during the period of chick growth.

Conclusion: There is clinal variation in colour polymorphism in the Booted Eagle. The variation is probably maintained by disruptive selection due to climatic factors such as rain and cloud cover, which influence the detectability of the different colour morphs to their prey.  相似文献

Fleas of the Caucasus belong to 155 species of 40 genera, constituting 17% and 43% of the species and generic composition of the Palaearctic fauna, respectively. The Caucasian fauna includes 23 endemic species but no endemic genera or subgenera. In the number of species, the Caucasian fauna is similar to that of the Mediterranean Subregion and is significantly poorer than the faunas of the Euro-Siberian (by 2.2 times) and Irano-Turanian (by 1.7 times) Subregions. Based on taxonomic diversity, we can propose a hypothesis on the West and East Palaearctic sources of the Caucasian fauna. The West Palaearctic source has determined the distribution of pulicomorph fleas of the families Pulicidae and Coptopsyllidae from Africa, on the one hand, and of fleas of the genera Ctenopthalmus and Palaeopsylla from Europe, on the other hand. Fleas of the Holarctic genera, such as Ceratophyllus and Megabothris, entered the Caucasus by the north Asian route; fleas of the genera Neopsylla, Rhadinopsylla, and Hystrichopsylla migrated to the Caucasus from east and central Asia by the south Asian route, through Middle and Western Asia.  相似文献

The present work provides an improvement on the knowledge of the diversity, morphology and distribution of Culicoides species in Catalonia (NE Spain). Data derived from morphology and sequencing allowed to detect the presence of 13 species non previously found in the surveillance area, updating the number of species recorded in Catalonia up to 53. Of special interest among the newly recorded species are: 1) C. yemenensis, new record for Europe, 2) C. coluzzii and C. sejfadinei, being new records for the Iberian Peninsula, and 3) C. pseudopallidus which is new record for Spain. Regarding the current distribution of Culicoides species, two eco-zones were detected in the region, the first eco-zone had species with typical northern Palaearctic (European) distribution whereas the second had species with typical southern Palaearctic (African) distribution, which were apparently influenced by mean high temperature of the warmest month and annual precipitation rate.  相似文献

Monthly counts of Palaearctic waders were made at high tide in three areas of Langebaan Lagoon, southwestern Cape, during 1973 and 1974. A total of sixteen species was observed. The five commonest species, in order of abundance, were Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea, Grey Plover Squalarola squatarola, Turnstone Arenaria interpres, Knot C. canutus and Sanderling C. alba. Together they formed 95,7% of the population counted. Waders arrived in September and departed in March and April. Overwintering populations of the commoner species were observed. Estimates of the total population size of the lagoon were 41 000–55 000 in summer and 10 500 in winter. These figures are of value for nature conservation and show that the lagoon is a wetland of international importance.  相似文献

A cladistic analysis of the West Palaearctic Scopaeina Mulsant & Rey, 1878 (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae: Paederinae) is presented along with bionomic and biogeographic information. A total of 76 morphological characters were coded for the 88 currently known West Palaearctic species, except for S. bifossicapitata (Outerelo & Oromi, 1987). Results show that Scopaeina comprises two well-supported monophyletic groups in the West Palaearctic, Micranops Cameron, 1913 and Scopaeus Erichson, 1840, which are considered to represent distinct genera. Phylogenetic relationships to Orus Casey, 1884, distributed in North and South America, are briefly discussed. Whereas Micranops is only represented by M. pilicornis (Baudi, 1869) in the region under study, 87 species of Scopaeus are currently known from the West Palaearctic. Within Scopaeus, the cladistic analysis yielded many well-supported monophyletic species groups, most of which are restricted to the West Palaearctic. However, except for Hyperscopaeus Coiffait, 1984, they are not in agreement with the widely used subgeneric concept sensu Coiffait (1952–1984). The following polyphyletic subgenera are consequently synonymized: Alloscopaeus Coiffait, 1968, Anomoscopaeus Coiffait, 1968, Geoscopaeus Coiffait, 1960, and Hyposcopaeus Coiffait, 1960 synn. n. = Scopaeus Erichson, 1840. Nivorus Herman, 1965, and Microscopaeus Coiffait, 1981 synn. n. = Micranops Cameron, 1913. The monotypical genus Coecoscopaeus Coiffait, 1984, established for C. coecus (Peyerimhoff, 1906), is excluded from Scopaeina. Scopaeus mitratus perroti Ochs, 1953 is raised to species rank, and S. nigellus Wollaston, 1864, formerly a synonym of S. minimus Erichson, 1939, is revalidated. Finally, we present a catalogue of species and synonyms of West Palaearctic Scopaeina along with distributional data and five new synonymies of species group names: S. bordei Peyerimhoff, 1914 syn. n. = S. portai Luze, 1910; S. tassiliensis Jarrige, 1958, S. mauretanicus Coiffait, 1960 synn. n. = S. crassipes Wollaston, 1867; S. saoudiensis Coiffait, 1981 = S. sinaicus Coiffait, 1970; S. mateui Coiffait, 1953 syn. n. = S. didymus Erichson, 1840. Several unanswered questions remain regarding the taxonomy and phylogeny of inquiline gallwasps (Cynipidae: Synergini), obligate inhabitants of plant galls induced primarily by other gallwasps (Cynipidae: Cynipini and Diplolepidini). Here we use morphological and molecular data to revise the inquiline genus Synophrus, members of which are notable for extensively modifying the structure of galls induced by oak gallwasp hosts on oaks in the section Cerris of Quercus subgenus Quercus in the Western Palaearctic. Previous taxonomic treatments have recognized three Western Palaearctic species of Synophrus: S. pilulae, S. politus and S. olivieri. Our results support the establishment of four additional Western Palaearctic species: Synophrus hungaricus sp.n. , S. libani sp.n. , S. syriacus sp.n. and S. hispanicus sp.n. We describe and diagnose these new taxa, analyse their phylogenetic relationships, and show that Synophrus inquilines are able to impose their own gall phenotypes on those of their hosts. Summary

Cyprus is rich in endemics; however, all but two lacewing species are shared with the mainland. Thus, the discovery of a new morphologically distinct species of chrysopid belonging to the extensively studied genus Chrysopa, Chrysopa niki n. sp., appears remarkable. While most Chrysopa species differ in relatively subtle morphological characters, the new taxon is set apart from all Western Palaearctic congeners due to a unique combination of pattern, venational, leg and genital characters. The characteristics of C. niki n. sp. suggest that it might be an endemic to Cyprus, not strictly related to other congeners, underlining the importance of the discovery. The biogeography of Cypriot Neuroptera is discussed in light of this new finding.  相似文献

The newly developed microsatellite set for Reissita simonyi ( Rebel 1899 ) (Lepidoptera, Zyganidae) is presented. In total, 14 loci turned out to be highly polymorphic. The microsatellite set will be used for a population genetic analysis of this endemic species in Southern Arabia. In the focus of this study stands the genetic differentiation and variability of isolated populations, which are assumed to be based on habitat fragmentation due to natural processes and human impact. Moreover, this new microsatellite set showed accurate band patterns in the Palaearctic genus Zygaena which seems to be promising for further studies.  相似文献

We present a molecular phylogeny of the family Raphidiidae including representatives of 21 of the 26 genera. Sequences from the nuclear gene for the large subunit ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3 gene (cox3) were used. For the phylogenetic reconstructions we applied automated and manual approaches for sequence alignment and different evolutionary models and tree building algorithms. The trees based on the two alignment approaches were rather similar in their overall topology. A combination of both marker sequences increased the resolution of the trees. The six clades within the raphidiid family that emerged represent either single genera or groups of genera, namely: (i) the Nearctic genus Agulla Navás, (ii) the Nearctic/Central American genus Alena Navás, (iii) the Central Asiatic and Eastern Palaearctic genus Mongoloraphidia H. Aspöck & U. Aspöck, (iv) the Palaearctic Puncha clade, (v) the western Mediterranean Ohmella clade, and (vi) the Palaearctic Phaeostigma clade. The New World taxa Agulla and Alena are placed as successive out‐groups to a monophyletic Palaearctic clade. The Mongoloraphidia clade is distributed in the eastern Palearctic while the remaining three clades are exclusively (Ohmella clade) or mainly distributed in the western Palaearctic. The early radiation of extant Raphidiidae is interpreted based on the phylogenetic tree obtained in the present study, and the geological and palaeobiological processes around the K–T boundary.  相似文献
