Abstract

Invasive non-indigenous species (NIS) are a threat to marine biodiversity and marine reliant industries. Recreational vessels are recognised as an important vector of NIS translocation, particularly domestically. This paper reports on a novel application of multilevel modelling and multiple imputation in order to quantify the relationship between biofouling biomass (wet weight) and the vessel-level characteristics of recreational and fishing vessels. It was found that the number of days since the vessel was last cleaned strongly related to the biofouling biomass, yet differed dependent on vessel type. Similarly, the median number of trips undertaken was related to the biofouling biomass, and varied according to the type of antifouling paint (AF) used. No relationship was found between vessel size and biofouling biomass per sample unit. To reduce the spread of NIS, vessel owners should use an AF paint suitable to their vessel’s operational profile, and follow a maintenance schedule according to the paint manufacturer’s specifications.  相似文献

The inhibition of marine biofouling by the bromotyrosine derivative ianthelline, isolated from the Arctic marine sponge Stryphnus fortis, is described. All major stages of the fouling process are investigated. The effect of ianthelline on adhesion and growth of marine bacteria and microalgae is tested to investigate its influence on the initial microfouling process comparing with the known marine antifoulant barettin as a reference. Macrofouling is studied via barnacle (Balanus improvisus) settlement assays and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) phenoloxidase inhibition. Ianthelline is shown to inhibit both marine micro- and macrofoulers with a pronounced effect on marine bacteria (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values 0.1–10 μg/mL) and barnacle larval settlement (IC50?=?3.0 μg/mL). Moderate effects are recorded on M. edulis (IC50?=?45.2 μg/mL) and microalgae, where growth is more affected than surface adhesion. The effect of ianthelline is also investigated against human pathogenic bacteria. Ianthelline displayed low micromolar MIC values against several bacterial strains, both Gram positive and Gram negative, down to 2.5 μg/mL. In summary, the effect of ianthelline on 20 different representative marine antifouling organisms and seven human pathogenic bacterial strains is presented.  相似文献

Biofouling exerts a frictional and cost penalty on ships and is a direct cause of invasion by marine species. These negative consequences provide a unifying purpose for the maritime industry and biosecurity managers to prevent biofouling accumulation and transfer, but important gaps exist between these sectors. This mini-review examines the approach to assessments of ship biofouling among sectors (industry, biosecurity and marine science) and the implications for existing and emerging management of biofouling. The primary distinctions between industry and biosecurity in assessment of vessels biofouling revolve around the resolution of biological information collected and the specific wetted surface areas of primary concern to each sector. The morphological characteristics of biofouling and their effects on propulsion dynamics are of primary concern to industry, with an almost exclusive focus on the vertical sides and flat bottom of hulls and an emphasis on antifouling and operational performance. In contrast, the identity, biogeography, and ecology of translocated organisms is of highest concern to invasion researchers and biosecurity managers and policymakers, especially as it relates to species with known histories of invasion elsewhere. Current management practices often provide adequate, although not complete, provision for hull surfaces, but niche areas are well known to enhance biosecurity risk. As regulations to prevent invasions emerge in this arena, there is a growing opportunity for industry, biosecurity and academic stakeholders to collaborate and harmonize efforts to assess and manage biofouling of ships that should lead to more comprehensive biofouling solutions that promote industry goals while reducing biosecurity risk and greenhouse gas emissions.  相似文献

Abstract

Biofouling accumulation on ships’ submerged surfaces typically occurs during stationary periods that render surfaces more susceptible to colonization than when underway. As a result, stationary periods longer than typical port residence times (hours to days), often referred to as lay-ups, can have deleterious effects on hull maintenance strategies, which aim to minimize biofouling impacts on ship operations and the likelihood of invasive species transfers. This experimental study tested the effects of different lay-up durations on the magnitude of biofouling, before and after exposure to flow, using fouling panels with three coating treatments (antifouling, foul-release, and controls), at two sites, and a portable field flume to simulate voyage sheer forces. Control panels subjected to extended stationary durations (28-, 45- and 60-days) had significantly higher biofouling cover and there was a 13- to 25-fold difference in biofouling accumulation between 10-days and 28-days of static immersion. Prior to flume exposure, the antifouling coating prevented biofouling accumulation almost entirely at one site and kept it below 20% at the other. Foul-release coatings also proved effective, especially after flume exposure, which reduced biofouling at one site from >52% to <6% cover (on average). The experimental approach was beneficial for co-locating panel deployments and flume processing using a consistent (standardized) flow regime on large panels across sites of differing conditions and biofouling assemblages. While lay-ups of commercial vessels are relatively common, inevitable, and unavoidable, it is important to develop a better understanding of the magnitude of their effects on biofouling of ships’ submerged surfaces and to develop workable post-lay-up approaches to manage and respond to elevated biofouling accumulation that may result.  相似文献

Biofouling in aquatic environments have a wide range of detrimental effects on man-made structures and cause economic loss. Current antifouling compounds including Diuron, dichlorofluanid, and Irgarol are toxic and can accumulate in marine environments. Thus, effective and environmentally friendly antifoulants are needed. Six structurally similar compounds were isolated from the brown alga, Sargassum horneri, based on bioactivity-guided isolation by reversed-phased liquid flash chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. Six chemical constituents possessing antifouling activities were identified as chromanols consisting of polyprenyl chain by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. Antifouling activities of these six compounds were determined against representative fouling organisms including a hard fouling organism the mussel Mytilus edulis, a soft fouling macroalga Ulva pertusa, the biofouling diatom Navicula annexa, and the biofouling bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa KNP-3 and Alteromonas sp. KNS-8. The compounds could inhibit larvae settlement of mussel M. edulis with an EC50 of 0.11–3.34 μg mL?1, spore settlement of U. pertusa zoospores (EC50 of 0.01–0.43 μg mL?1), and the diatom N. annexa (EC50 of 0.008–0.19 μg mL?1). The two biofouling bacteria were sensitive to the tested compounds (minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.68–36.8 and 1.02–30.4 μg mL?1, respectively). From toxicity tests on juvenile Sebastes schlegelii fish, brine shrimp Artemia salina, and microalga Tetraselmis suecica, S3 had the lowest LC50 values of 60.2, 108, and 6.7 μg mL?1 and exhibited no observed effect concentration at 24.5, 41.6, and 3.1 μg mL?1 for these three tested marine organisms, respectively.  相似文献

In this work, 37 bacterial strains isolated from biofouling of marine organisms and from the Museum of Heterotrophic Bacteria of the National Scientific Center of Marine Biology were studied. The strains were identified based on their phenotypic characteristics and on the fatty acid composition of their cell wall lipids. Members of the genus Pseudoalteromonas prevailed both in associated microflora of two dinoflagellate clones and in the biofilms from marine hydrobionts. Associated microflora included also members of the CFB cluster, Bacillus, Sulfitobacter, Acinetobacter, Shewanella, and Psychrobacter. A considerable portion of strains (48.6%) exhibited antimicrobial activity. Antifouling activity against algal spores was studied using single-species bacterial biofilms and the spores of Ulva lactuca и Undaria pinnatifida, the algae most common in the Sea of Japan. Strong inhibitory effect on attachment of Ulva and Undaria spores was observed for 75 and 51% of the strains, respectively. Attached spores were, however, less sensitive to the inhibitory action of biofilms. Species specificity of algal response to bacteria was shown, with a strain having different effect on the spores of different algal species. Biotechnologically promising strains were determined, which exhibited high activity against the spores of macroalgae and could probably be used as producers of antifouling substances and as components of antifouling coatings. No relation was found between antifouling activity of bacteria and the source of their isolation. Our results indicate wide occurrence of bacteria with antifouling activity among associated microflora of marine hydrobionts and demonstrate the extent of complexity and diversity of relations between bacterial biofilms and algal spores.  相似文献

The occurrence of biofouling in MFC can cause severe problems such as hindering proton transfer and increasing the ohmic and charge transfer resistance of cathodes, which results in a rapid decline in performance of MFC. This is one of the main reasons why scaling-up of MFCs has not yet been successfully accomplished. The present review article is a wide-ranging attempt to provide insights to the biofouling mechanisms on surfaces of MFC, mainly on proton exchange membranes and cathodes, and their effects on performance of MFC based on theoretical and practical evidence. Various biofouling mitigation techniques for membranes are discussed, including preparation of antifouling composite membranes, modification of the physical and chemical properties of existing membranes, and coating with antifouling agents. For cathodes of MFC, use of Ag nanoparticles, Ag-based composite nanoparticles, and antifouling chemicals is outlined in considerable detail. Finally, prospective techniques for mitigation of biofouling are discussed, which have not been given much previous attention in the field of MFC research. This article will help to enhance understanding of the severity of biofouling issues in MFCs and provides up-to-date solutions. It will be beneficial for scientific communities for further strengthening MFC research and will also help in progressing this cutting-edge technology to scale-up, using the most efficient methods as described here.  相似文献

Crude extracts of 52 marine bacteria associated with sponges, which were collected from the sea near San Juan Island, Washington, USA, were screened using diatom attachment assays against Amphora sp., Nitzschia closterium, Sellaphora sp. and Stauroneis sp. to investigate their antidiatom activities. Among these samples, five expressed strong anti-adhesion effects on all four tested diatoms. There was no negative effect observed from those five active samples on the growth of Amphora sp. Those five active samples were prepared from respective isolates, which all belonged to the genus Bacillus based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. The results of present study indicate that Bacillus may play important roles for sponges’ chemical defence against biofouling of diatoms and that the metabolites of Bacillus may be a potential source of natural antifouling compounds.  相似文献

A key area in marine antifoulant research is the discovery of new environmentally friendly solutions that prevent biofilm formation and associated biocorrosion. Taking into consideration the natural mechanisms of marine organisms to protect against epibiosis, new biomimetic solutions can be utilised against biofouling, and marine bacteria are promising agents. Therefore, the goal of this study was to identify cultivable bacteria with antifouling (AF) activity associated with the sponge Aplysina gerardogreeni. A collection of 63 bacteria was isolated, and the organic extracts were assayed against various microfouler strains (16 bacteria and five microalgae). The results showed that 87% of bacterial extracts were active against the microfoulers tested. Sixteen of them can be considered to possess AF potential and belong to the genera Bacillus, Micrococcus, Paracoccus, Pseudobacter, Pseudovibrio, Psychrobacter, Staphylocuccus and Terribacillus. Bioactivity showed temporal variations; the highest activity was in February and June and the lowest in October. Bacillus bacteria were dominant and showed AF activities throughout the year. The results revealed those marine bacteria sponge-associated and the genus Bacillus in particular, are promising AF agents.  相似文献

Marine ecosystems are affected by introduced species including microalgae. We propose that biofouling on ships’ hulls is a potentially important mechanism for microalgae dispersal worldwide. Biofouling samples, for phytoplankton composition analysis, were collected in Spanish Mediterranean ports from the hulls of ships that had completed oceanic journeys from other Mediterranean ports, and long journeys from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Samples representing the local population of phytoplankton either in the water column or attached to the biofouling of locally-based ship-hulls were used as controls. A broad variety of microalgae species (including toxic dinoflagellates), which were not present in the local phytoplankton populations were found on the biofouling film of the ships that had been on distant journeys. In spite of the presence of the antifouling paints containing toxic compounds, microalgae were able to rapidly adapt to these non-favourable conditions. Consequently, our study shows that ships’ biofouling seems to be a powerful vector for microalgae dispersal at a global scale due to the capacity of microalgae to attach to the biofouling film and to cope by adaptation mechanisms with antifouling compounds.  相似文献

This study used a specially designed MAGPLATE system to quantify the en route survivorship and post-voyage recovery of biofouling assemblages subjected to short voyages (<12 h) across a range of vessel speeds (slow, medium, fast; in the range 4.0–21.5 knots). The effect of hull location (bow, amidships and stern) was also examined. While no significant differences were evident in en route survivorship of biofouling organisms amongst hull locations, biofouling cover and richness were markedly reduced on faster vessels relative to slower craft. Therefore, the potential inoculum size of non-indigenous marine species and richness is likely to be reduced for vessels that travel at faster speeds (>14 knots), which is likely to also reduce the chances of successful introductions. Despite this, the magnitude of introductions from biofouling on fast vessels can be considered minor, especially for species richness where 90% of source-port species were recorded at destinations.  相似文献

The process of biofouling of marine structures and substrates, such as platforms or ship hulls, proceeds in multiple steps. Soon after the formation of an initial conditioning film, formed via the adsorption of organic particles to natural or man-made substrates, a population of different bacterial taxa associates under the formation of a biofilm. These microorganisms communicate through a complex quorum sensing network. Macro-foulers, e.g., barnacles, then settle and form a fouling layer on the marine surfaces, a process that globally has severe impacts both on the economy and on the environment. Since the ban of tributyltin, an efficient replacement of this antifouling compound by next-generation antifouling coatings that are environmentally more acceptable and also showing longer half-lives has not yet been developed. The sponges, as sessile filter-feeder animals, have evolved antifouling strategies to protect themselves against micro- and subsequent macro-biofouling processes. Experimental data are summarized and suggest that coating of the sponge surface with bio-silica contributes to the inhibition of the formation of a conditioning film. A direct adsorption of the surfaces by microorganisms can be impaired through poisoning the organisms with direct-acting secondary metabolites or toxic peptides. In addition, first, compounds from sponges have been identified that interfere with the anti-quorum sensing network. Sponge secondary metabolites acting selectively on diatom colonization have not yet been identified. Finally, it is outlined that direct-acting secondary metabolites inhibiting the growth of macro-fouling animals and those that poison the multidrug resistance pump are available. It is concluded that rational screening programs for inhibitors of the complex and dynamic problem of biofilm production, based on multidisciplinary studies and using sponges as a model, are required in the future.  相似文献

Two major problems associated with biofouling studies are the lack of broad scale testing and failure to use consistent standards among different assays or studies. To address these issues the activity of two biologically active natural products, elatol and deschloroelatol, isolated from the marine red alga Laurencia rigida, and three commonly used biocides, Nopcocide N-96?, Irgarol 1051? and Sea-Nine 211?, was compared, in a broad spectrum of bioassays. The activity of the different compounds varied substantially among different bioassay tests. Elatol and deschloroelatol had a narrow range of activity with strongest effects against invertebrate larvae. Both compounds were highly toxic. However, neither compound had strong activity against marine bacteria or the common epiphyte Ulva lactuca. Irgarol 1051 also had a narrow range of activity, only affecting algal settlement strongly. Nopcocide N-96 and Sea-Nine 211 had moderate to strong activity across the spectrum of bioassays, viz. growth of marine bacteria (Vibrio fischeri, Serratia sp.), inhibition of settlement of macroalgae (Ulva lactuca), toxicity (Balanus amphitrite), and inhibition of settlement of invertebrate larvae (Balanus amphitrite, Bugula neritina). Based on the results it is proposed that Sea-Nine 211, because of its broad spectrum activity, be used as a standard for comparative assessments of the antifouling activity of marine natural products and analogues.  相似文献

Biofouling in marine aquaculture is a specific problem where both the target culture species and/or infrastructure are exposed to a diverse array of fouling organisms, with significant production impacts. In shellfish aquaculture the key impact is the direct fouling of stock causing physical damage, mechanical interference, biological competition and environmental modification, while infrastructure is also impacted. In contrast, the key impact in finfish aquaculture is the fouling of infrastructure which restricts water exchange, increases disease risk and causes deformation of cages and structures. Consequently, the economic costs associated with biofouling control are substantial. Conservative estimates are consistently between 5–10% of production costs (equivalent to US$ 1.5 to 3 billion yr?1), illustrating the need for effective mitigation methods and technologies. The control of biofouling in aquaculture is achieved through the avoidance of natural recruitment, physical removal and the use of antifoulants. However, the continued rise and expansion of the aquaculture industry and the increasingly stringent legislation for biocides in food production necessitates the development of innovative antifouling strategies. These must meet environmental, societal, and economic benchmarks while effectively preventing the settlement and growth of resilient multi-species consortia of biofouling organisms.  相似文献

Underwater noise is increasing globally, largely due to increased vessel numbers and international ocean trade. Vessels are also a major vector for translocation of non-indigenous marine species which can have serious implications for biosecurity. The possibility that underwater noise from fishing vessels may promote settlement of biofouling on hulls was investigated for the ascidian Ciona intestinalis. Spatial differences in biofouling appear to be correlated with spatial differences in the intensity and frequency of the noise emitted by the vessel’s generator. This correlation was confirmed in laboratory experiments where C. intestinalis larvae showed significantly faster settlement and metamorphosis when exposed to the underwater noise produced by the vessel generator. Larval survival rates were also significantly higher in treatments exposed to vessel generator noise. Enhanced settlement attributable to vessel generator noise may indicate that vessels not only provide a suitable fouling substratum, but vessels running generators may be attracting larvae and enhancing their survival and growth.  相似文献

Diatoms are a major component of microbial slimes that develop on man-made surfaces placed in the marine environment. Toxic antifouling paints, as well as environmentally friendly, fouling-release coatings, tend to be effective against most fouling organisms, yet fail badly to diatom slimes. Biofouling diatoms have been found to tenaciously adhere to and colonise even the most resistant of artificial surfaces. This review covers the basic biology of fouling marine diatoms, their mechanisms of adhesion and the nature of their adhesives, as well as documenting the various approaches that have been utilised to understand the formation and maintenance of diatom biofouling layers.  相似文献

Biofouling of vessels is implicated as a high risk transfer mechanism of non-indigenous marine species (NIMS). Biofouling on international vessels is managed through stringent border control policies, however, domestic biofouling transfers are managed under different policies and legislative arrangements as they cross internal borders. As comprehensive guidelines are developed and increased compliance of international vessels with 'clean hull' expectations increase, vessel movements from port to port will become the focus of biosecurity management. A semi-quantitative port to port biofouling risk assessment is presented that evaluates the presence of known NIMS in the source port and determines the likelihood of transfer based on the NIMS association with biofouling and environmental match between source and receiving ports. This risk assessment method was used to assess the risk profile of a single dredge vessel during three anticipated voyages within Australia, resulting in negligible to low risk outcomes. This finding is contrasted with expectations in the literature, specifically those that suggest slow moving vessels pose a high to extreme risk of transferring NIMS species.  相似文献
