Female and juvenile haddock make sounds, as well as males. Examination of the sounds from different sexes indicates that the sound waveform is a function of fish maturity and it is gender-specific. Immature fish sounds were found to be made up of two pulses with similar frequencies and opposite polarities. Females produced two pulses with the same polarity, the first pulse having a higher frequency than the second. The acoustic characteristics of juvenile, female and male haddock sounds are compared. Sexual dimorphism in the mass of the drumming muscle mass has also been investigated. Female haddock possess less well-developed drumming muscles than males throughout the whole year. A significant difference in drumming muscle mass was observed not only in males but also in females at different seasons. A positive relation between drumming muscle mass and fish size has been highlighted in both male and female fish. The physical parameters of the sound units emitted by juveniles, females and males, which are likely affected by physiological condition and maturity stage, are discussed in relation to the sound-producing mechanism. 相似文献

Histological observations were made on the changes occurring in the haddock ovary during maturation. The influence of varying food rations on the numbers of eggs released was considered. Oocyte development was found to be a continuous asynchronous process until the beginning of spawing, i.e. stage V when vitellogenesis became synchronized and there was no further initiation of new development. It is suggested that the upper limit of potential fecundity was determined before stage II, however the actual numbers of eggs spawned could still be reduced during later stages in response to a poor food supply. 相似文献

The macro and trace mineral composition of vertebrae and muscle in wild and cultured haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus was determined. Results indicated that haddock deposit c . 10% higher amounts of mineral than salmonids. Based on distribution between the analysed tissues as well as concentration differences, the minerals in wild and cultured haddock were divided into four categories: (1) As, Mn, Na, S and Zn concentration did not show any significant ( P > 0·05) variation in both muscle and vertebrae; (2) Cr, Co, Mg, Mo and Si concentrations in wild and culture stocks muscle did not vary but vertebrae concentration showed significant differences ( P < 0·05); (3) Ca and Cu concentration varied in muscle while remaining the same in vertebrae; (4) Al, Ba, Fe, P, K and Sr concentration showed a significant difference in both muscle and vertebrae. Vertebrae P content of cultured haddock was lower than that of wild fish whereas muscle P content was relatively high in cultured fish. Vertebrae and muscle Fe content of cultured haddock was significantly higher than in wild fish. The Mg, K, Co and Cr concentrations in vertebrae were significantly higher in wild haddock than in cultured fish, whereas Mo and Al levels were low. These differences in trace element composition of wild and cultured haddock were probably related to differences in food source and therefore the mineral composition of the diet. The nutritional significance of these findings is discussed. 相似文献

Juvenile haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus ( c. 39 g) were exposed to either a handling stressor (1 min out of water) or heat shock (increase from 10 to 15° C for 1 h), and plasma cortisol, plasma glucose and gill hsp70 levels were determined before, and at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h post-stress. The pattern of cortisol increase was similar following both stressors, with levels increasing by 25-fold at 1 h post-stress, but returning to pre-stress levels (2–5 ng ml−1 ) by 3 h. In contrast, neither handling nor heat shock caused an increase in plasma glucose levels. Although gill hsp70 was detected, presumably constitutive levels, in both control and heat shocked groups, there were not significant changes in gill hsp70 levels after exposure to heat shock. The lack of glucose and hsp70 responses to these typical stressors is consistent with previous studies on Atlantic cod Gadus morhua , and suggests that the stress physiology of Gadidae differs from the 'typical' teleost. 相似文献

Individual haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.) were maintained at different feeding levels in an aquarium from November until the completion of spawning. The mean duration of spawning was 33.2 days (range 19–59) during which an average of 16.6 (range 10–25) batches of eggs were produced. The size and dry weight of the eggs declined during the spawning period. Egg production and feeding level were correlated positively. There was some suggestion that when female haddock received low rations (< 5 kcal day-1 ) a lower proportion spawned, and the dry weights of the eggs were lower compared with females on high rations (> 13 kcal day -1 ). The relation between daily growth in wet weight, g, and daily surplus energy intake, kcal, was: G =(0.295 E )— 0.328. When food energy is restricted, haddock appear to achieve a balance between somatic growth and reproduction. 相似文献

Immature specimens of Opechona sp. are described from the stomach, pyloric caeca and intestine of larval and O-group haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.), taken in the northern North Sea and to the west of Scotland. This appears to be a new host record and possible sources of infection are discussed, together with the occurrence of this normally intestinal parasite in the stomach. It is suggested that these infections may be worth taking into account when considering possible factors contributing to mortalities of haddock and other teleost larvae. 相似文献

A study was conducted to compare astaxanthin binding ability of solubilized muscle proteins of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) and Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.). Muscle proteins of juvenile Atlantic salmon, haddock and halibut were solubilized by sequential extraction of muscle tissue using low ionic strength solutions. Electrophoretic protein profiles of the six solubilized fractions from these species were similar. Each solubilized fraction from the three species was examined for its relative astaxanthin binding capacity. The amount of bound astaxanthin was significantly different (P < 0.05) among the six fractions of each species. Significant differences in astaxanthin binding were only found for fractions A and E among the species. The amount of bound astaxanthin in various fractions of each species showed a good correlation (R2 = 0.80–0.92) with the ANS (8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate) fluorescence intensity of those fractions. The pattern and extent of astaxanthin binding to the muscle proteins of juvenile salmon, haddock and halibut is comparable to that reported previously for adult Atlantic salmon [Saha, M.R., Ross, N.W., Gill, T.A., Olsen, R.E., Lall, S.P., 2005. Development of a method to assess binding of astaxanthin to Atlantic salmon S. salar L. muscle proteins. Aquacult. Res. 36, 336–343.]. These combined observations suggest that the carotenoid binding capacity of the muscle proteins of salmon is not the limiting factor in the deposition of carotenoid in their flesh. 相似文献

Food intake was measured under conditions of continuous food availability for haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.), and dab, Limanda limanda (L.). Haddock consumed approximately 75% of all food during the day, with a peak of feeding at dusk and an inferred peak at dawn; peaks of feeding were associated with larger meals. By contrast, dabs were mainly night-time feeders with daily consumption rates that were approximately 40% lower than those shown by haddock. Comparison of haddock maximum daily ration with published estimates of consumption in the wild indicate that wild haddock feed at between 15 and 22% of their maximum capacity. Using published data on gastric evacuation, the relationship between meal size and stomach residuum was investigated. There was no detectable relationship between these two variables. 相似文献

We report the development of a multiplex, single tube (TaqMan) PCR assay for the identification of three commercially important gadoid species, the cod (Gadus morhua L.), the haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) and the whiting (Merlangius merlangus L.). The assay unambiguously identifies known adult tissue samples, and ethanol‐preserved eggs from all three species with greater than 98% accuracy, providing a powerful tool for the development of catch independent stock assessment methods, mapping of spawning sites and the detection of commercial fraud in the fishing and food production industries. 相似文献

Using data collected as part of offshore surveys conducted during 1972–2013, haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus association patterns with depth and temperature in southern Newfoundland waters, the northern extremity of the species' range in the western Atlantic Ocean, were quantified. They were typically concentrated in the deep warm waters along the narrow shelf slope in North‐west Atlantic Fisheries Organization Divisions 3O and 3P with individuals moving seasonally into the shallow waters of the banks as they warmed. While M. aeglefinus were found over a range of depths and temperatures, they were primarily located at depths deeper and temperatures warmer than the median sampled. Analyses demonstrated that of the two hydrographic variables assessed, temperature was most influential in structuring distribution, with individuals appearing to change depth in order to maintain similar temperature throughout the year. Melanogrammus aeglefinus were found predominantly in temperatures of c. 4–8° C which often represented some of the warmest waters available. Differences in fish‐habitat association patterns in relation to sex or maturity status were not readily apparent from the analyses. Warming conditions off Newfoundland and Labrador in recent years might be predicted to improve local M. aeglefinus productivity. 相似文献

Haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus males observed in captivity proved to be vocally active throughout the whole year, although the highest levels of vocal activity were reached in the spawning season between February and April. During this season, the most common type of sound consisted of sequences of regularly repeated, almost identical, double‐pulsed knocks (KN). These sequences were mostly associated with a particular behaviour pattern, the patrolling display, which has previously been shown to play a key role in territoriality and spawning. Differences in the double‐pulsed KNs produced by three individual males were demonstrated by two different statistical methods and it is suggested that these differences may allow individual males to be discriminated by other fish, perhaps conveying fitness‐related information on the sender. Some aspects of the calls changed seasonally, perhaps reflecting observed variations in the mass of the drumming muscles. When using passive listening to locate M. aeglefinus spawning grounds, the physical characteristics of the sounds may indicate how close the individual males are to spawning. 相似文献

Variations in standard length ( L S ), gape size ( S G ) and jaw length ( L J ) were studied in larval and juvenile gadoids (cod Gadus morhua , haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus and whiting Merlangius merlangus ) from 4 to 70 mm. The increase in S G and L J was not linear with respect to L S . The relationship was best described by segmented regression lines in all three species, with an inflection point at c . 10·5 mm. The S G and L J increased more rapidly in relation to larval L S for individuals smaller than this inflection point size. The rates of increase slowed significantly post-inflection, an effect more noticeable in S G data compared to L J data. In each case, the inflection point fell in the intermediate period of development between the larval and juvenile stages, which could be considered as metamorphosis. Published equations that have been used to predict S G from L J lead to the overestimation of gape. New relationships are presented, which may be used to predict S G from measurements of either L S or upper jaw length in cod, haddock and whiting. 相似文献

From one to thirty Grillotia erinaceus plerocercoids were found in 3714 of 8228 haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus caught in the northern North Sea, to the north and west of Scotland and at Faroe. Plerocercoids were also found in 30 of 64 cod from Aberdeen Bay, and in 44 of 55 saithe from the Firth of Clyde. In haddock, most plerocercoids occurred encysted along the intestine, and their frequency fitted a negative binomial distribution. Incidence and intensity of infestation increased with host age and there was no host sex difference in incidence. Three maturity stages were recognized, the proportions of which were consistent between haddock length groups. No precipitin bands developed in gel diffusion tests using live plerocercoids and sera from infested and uninfested haddock. Attempts to transfer plerocercoids between haddock were unsuccessful. Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) is a gadoid fish species that deposits dietary lipid mainly in the liver. The fatty acid (FA) beta-oxidation activity of various tissues was evaluated in juvenile haddock fed graded levels of lipid. The catabolism of a radiolabelled FA, [1-(14)C]palmitoyl-CoA, through peroxisomal and mitochondrial beta-oxidation was determined in the liver, red and white muscle of juvenile haddock fed 12, 18 and 24% lipid in the diet. There was no significant increase in the mitochondrial or peroxisomal beta-oxidation activity in the tissues tested as the dietary lipid level increased from 12 to 24%. Peroxisomes accounted for 100% of the beta-oxidation observed in the liver, whereas mitochondrial beta-oxidation dominated in the red (91%) and white muscle (97%) of juvenile haddock. Of the tissues tested, red muscle possessed the highest specific activity for beta-oxidation expressed on a per mg protein or per g wet weight basis. However, white muscle, which forms over 50% of the body mass in gadoid fish was the most important tissue in juvenile haddock for overall FA catabolism. The total lipid and FA composition of these tissues were also determined. This study confirmed that the liver was the major lipid storage organ in haddock. The hepatosomatic index (HSI; 10.0-15.2%) and lipid (73.8-79.3% wet wt.) in the liver increased significantly as dietary lipid was increased from 12 to 24% lipid. There was no significant increase in the lipid composition of the white muscle (0.8% wet wt.), red muscle (1.9% wet wt.) or heart (2.5% wet wt.). 相似文献

In the process of cloning vitellogenin (Vtg) cDNAs from haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), two related, but distinct, mRNAs were identified. Full-length cDNA sequences were determined for both Vtg types (Had1 and Had2), and the deduced amino acid sequences were found to be 54% identical to each other and 48-58% identical to other teleost Vtgs. To investigate the expression of the two Vtg mRNAs, proteins from prehydrated oocytes and fertilized eggs were separated on SDS-polyacrylamide gels. Only a single lipovitellin I band was detected in each sample, and the egg lipovitellin I was smaller (97 vs. 110 kDa) than the oocyte protein, indicative of proteolytic processing during oocyte hydration. Mass spectrometric (MALDI-TOFMS and tandem mass spectrometry) analyses of tryptic fragments from the haddock oocyte and egg lipovitellin I revealed that the lipovitellin I from prehydrated oocytes contained tryptic fragments that matched the sequences of both types of Vtg, suggesting that there were two proteins in this band, while the egg lipovitellin I contained tryptic fragments that only matched the Had1 cDNA sequence, indicating that the Had2 lipovitellin had been degraded during hydration. Physiological data from haddock oocytes and eggs demonstrate that, as in other marine fish that spawn pelagic eggs, the free amino acid content increases during oocyte hydration and apparently contributes to hydration by driving the osmotic uptake of water. The correlation of the disappearance of one lipovitellin I with the increase of free amino acids in the oocyte suggests that this protein is a major source of the free amino acids for oocyte hydration. 相似文献

Using otolith weight to estimate the age of haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus): a tree model application 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, we investigated whether otolith weight can be used to estimate fish age with the same level of accuracy as that of the traditional annuli counting technique in a commercially important species such as haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). Results indicate that this method is highly effective for young fish (around 97% correct classification), whereas its powers of prediction decrease with the increasing age of the fish. For older fish, the otolith weight cannot be an accurate estimator of fish age if the weight overlap between the different age classes is too large. Nevertheless, the otolith weight technique is strictly dependent on correct age determination through the counting of annuli of those individuals used in the calibration. Hence, an increase in the accuracy of ageing obviously determines an increase of the power of otolith weight to estimate fish age. Therefore, we suggest that otolith weight could represent a routine technique for determination of the age structure of haddock populations. This technique has the merit to be objective, fast, 100% repeatable and has the same level of accuracy as that of annuli counting. 相似文献

We measured changes in free and total plasma cortisol levels, plasma glucose, gill hsp70 levels, and growth in haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) subjected to a long-term handling stress (15 s out of water, each day, for 4 weeks), and the effect of this long-term stress on the ability of haddock to respond to an acute stressor. The acute stressor was a single handling stress, and fish were sampled at 1, 6, and 12 h post-stress. During the long-term stress study, free and total plasma cortisol levels increased significantly (10-fold) in the stressed group after the second week. However, the percentage of free cortisol was already significantly elevated by the first week (control 17%, stressed 55%), and remained high during the second week (control 35% and stressed 65%). After 3 and 4 weeks of handling, both free and total cortisol declined in stressed fish to levels that were not significantly different from pre-stress values. Control fish grew significantly more than stressed fish (by 32% and 18%, respectively) over the 4 week study, and condition factor only increased in control fish. Although fish from the control group showed elevated total plasma cortisol levels (to 47 ng mL(-1)) 1 h after the acute stress, and the levels in stressed fish were comparable to those for the control fish, no significant increase in plasma cortisol was measured in the group subjected to the long-term stress. Free plasma cortisol levels did not increase significantly in either group following the acute stress. However, free plasma cortisol levels were significantly higher in long-term stress group, as compared with the control group, at 6 h post-stress. Plasma glucose and gill hsp70 levels were not altered by either the long-term stress or acute stressor. Our data indicate that cortisol (free and total), but not glucose or hsp70, appears to be adequate to assess short- and long-term stress in haddock. 相似文献
