Macrobenthic fauna was sampled in inland waters with unstable environmental parameters in the SW Netherlands. The distribution of 23 species of aquatic oligochaetes was related to chlorinity. Oligochaetes and other macrofaunal taxa were grouped by cluster analysis. Brackish-marine oligochaetes appeared to have a similarly large tolerance for chlorinity variations, as is known for the better researched euryhaline macrofauna.Communication no. 221.  相似文献

The macrofauna of small isolated brackish waters on a barrier island in the Dutch Wadden Sea was sampled qualitatively. An attempt was made to correlate species composition and species richness to chlorinity characteristics and to data on the water regime of the localities studied. It is shown that the observed differences in the macrofauna cannot be explained by differences in chlorinity only. Present and former connections to other water bodies seem equally important.  相似文献

The species composition of centrohelid heliozoa (Centrohelida) in saline and brackish inland water bodies and watercourses with salinity 2.0–42.2‰ was studied in the subarid zone of Russia. Nine species (Polyplacocystis ambigua, Pterocystis foliacea, Choanocystis ebelii, Acanthocystis astrakhanensis, A. dentata, A. myriospina, A. pectinata, A. taurica, A. turfacea) are new for saline and brackish inland waters. A. astrakhanensis and A. taurica are new for the fauna of Orenburg region. The first data on centrohelidian fauna in saline rivers of Elton region were obtained. The fauna comprises Polyplacocystis ambigua, Pterocystis foliacea, A. turfacea and Choanocystis ebelii. C. ebelii is new for the protist fauna of Russia. Five species (Polyplacocystis ambigua, Pterocystis foliacea, A. pectinata, A. dentata, A. taurica) were recorded for the first time in saline and brackish waters and described as eurihaline. Morphological diagnoses of Acanthocystis dentata and A. taurica were completed.

Summary As a result of the reconstruction of a dike on the Dutch island of Texel two small areas of the Wadden Sea were embanked in 1977 and 1978. In 1981 both by now blocked brackish waters were investigated for macrofauna and macroflora. The vegetation on these former parts of the Wadden Sea was still in a colonizing state. Many small patches ofRuppia spp. were found, contrary to older brackish waters with more extendedRuppia beds. The striking dominance ofR.maritima agrees with its large seed production enabling to colonize quickly new areas. In one of the ponds, where the maximum salinity of 23 Cl exceeded far the tolerance limit of this species given in the literature (15 Cl),R.maritima was still more numerous thanR.cirrhosa, a species which is more tolerant to salinity fluctuations. Several years after isolation these areas are still inhabited by a few Wadden Sea macrofauna species (e.g. Carcinus maenas, Hydrobia ulvae andCapitella capitata) who managed to survive the drastic environmental changes. In addition, a large number of species characteristic for blocked brackish waters has already colonized the new ponds. One of the two, that has always completely been isolated from other inland water, was inhabited in 1981 by 13 brackish water species. In the future the two new ponds on Texel are expected to loose their pioneer characteristics. There are reasons to expect that most of the Wadden Sea macrofauna relics will soon become extinct. A more extendedRuppia vegetation will probably develop together with a relative increase ofRuppia cirrhosa.  相似文献

External estuarine facies in Late Sinemurian beds from the base of the Puesto Araya Formation in the Atuel river region, Mendoza Province, Argentina, contain concentrations of a new species of Cardinioides (a shallow burrowing suspension-feeding Pachycardiidae bivalve) and a low diversity benthic fauna. These bivalves appear in tidal inlet facies of a wave-dominated estuary (environment similar to lagoon-barrier island systems), forming bioclastic lags at the channel bases. The taphonomic attributes (such as shell articulation, degree of fragmentation and abrasion, bioclast size, orientation) change from North to South, from monospecific concentrations of nearly complete large Cardinioides shells with low degree of fragmentation and abrasion, through beds with smaller Cardinioides shells associated with a few bivalves from marine environments, to only isolated fragmented specimens associated with a fully marine biota including not only other bivalves but also brachiopods and ammonoids. This, together with different palaeoecologic, sedimentologic and stratigraphic attributes at the studied localities are evidence of southwards changing environmental conditions from marginal marine (brackish) to fully marine on the eastern margin of the Neuquén basin at that time. From detailed analysis of taphonomic features, size distribution of shells, and the associated fauna at the different localities, the new species is regarded as a brackish water endemic, possibly a low salinity euryhaline species, which inhabited well oxygenated waters. Salinity, turbulence levels and food supply were the main limiting factors in the distribution of the species.  相似文献

The onychopod cladoceran Cercopagis that recently invaded the Baltic Sea is reported from new zones of the northern Baltic proper. Because of successful survival and an expanding distribution range, the addition of Cercopagis to the Baltic fauna is considered to be permanent. What has previously been cited as Cercopagis pengoi encompasses the morphology of several other species, subspecies and forms. Either a number of morphologically similar species is present, or there is a number of spurious species in Cercopagis. The last hypothesis is favoured. The spatial distribution pattern of Cercopagis, as well as that of total zooplankton, was correlated with depth. Deep (>100 m) and shallow (<10 m) stations had significantly lower abundance than stations of intermediate depth (<100 m). An overview of the distribution of C. pengoi group in fresh and brackish waters suggests a high tolerance to environmental factors, but with differences among taxa. Due to this ecological flexibility, the colonization of the Baltic is not unexpected. Increasing salinity may restrict dispersal of cercopagids to the southern areas of the Baltic and to the North Sea, but inland lakes (e.g. in Sweden) present an ecological profile suitable for colonization.  相似文献

Spelaeogriphaceans and thermosbaenaceans are two orders of eyeless, unpigmented peracarid crustaceans represented by very few species from subterranean waters. Spelaeogriphaceans occur only in continental waters, either running or still, in limestone or sandstone caves, or in calcrete aquifers. The four species known are limnic except one occurring in slightly brackish water loosely associated with an endorheic basin. The Thermosbaenacea are primarily marine, with only 18 species recorded in limnic conditions or in brackish inland waters whose salinity does not derive from dilution of seawater. They occur in limestone caves, the interstitial medium associated to alluvial deposits, or in thermo-mineral springs. Spelaeogriphaceans are found on the southern continents, in ancient cratons not affected by sea transgressions at least since the Early Cretaceous, when Gondwana started to break-up. The former integration of these terranes into Gondwana suggests that the penetration of spelaeogriphaceans in continental waters took place previous to the fragmentation of this super continent (starting ca. 140 Ma), and that their current distribution pattern was driven by continental drift. The distribution of the Thermosbaenacea matches precisely the area covered by the ancient Tethys Sea or its coastlines. They are most probably relicts of a once widespread shallow-water marine Tethyan fauna stranded in interstitial or crevicular groundwater during marine regressions. On the basis of investigations of the diatom flora and the Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera fauna in two mountain brooks with different chemisms the different effects of the regional factors of the water chemism and the extraregional factors, current and temperature, on the biocoenosis is discussed. The zoocoenotic division of mountain streams is affected by the extraregional factors; the structure of the diatom associations and the distribution of individual species of the insect fauna are dependent on the regional effect of the water chemism. The correlation of the halobic indices as ecological characteristics of the diatom flora with the factors of the water chemism, pH and alkalinity, and their relationship with the distribution of some species of the insect fauna suggest that the halobic index is a useful criterion for the ecological classification of waters. Also for the judgement of the trophic conditions and the self-purification of waters the halobic index can be regarded as an additional criterion.  相似文献

Fifty brackish supra-littoral pools bordering the Waddenzee were studied. The structure of plant communities (Potamogeton pectinatus L., Ranunculus baudotii Godr. and Zannichellia pedunculata Rchb.) is discussed in relation to water level fluctuations, chlorinity and water transparency. Chlorinity tolerances of the macrophytes (7 species) are discussed. The macrofauna was studied semi-quantitatively. The aquatic Coleoptera had the greatest diversity (24 species). A distinct relationship between the number of Coleoptera species and the percentage of macrophyte coverage was found. The distribution patterns of the most frequent species with respect to chlorinity categories are shown in histograms. The number of aquatic Heteroptera species is also discussed in relation to chlorinity and vegetation coverage. Less important macrofaunal groups (the Crustacea, Mollusca and Odonata) occurred in low species numbers.  相似文献

During a biotypological research of surface waters in the province of Friesland, The Netherlands, the macroinvertebrate fauna was sampled, both from the littoral and bottom substrata. Results of this investigation in different types of water on 60 and 55 stations in 1981 and 1982, respectively, are presented. The species richness in the littoral samples exceeded that of the bottom samples, and the samples per station had relatively few species in common. Even in many cases the most abundant taxon was a different one in both samples of the same spot. With multivariate analysis of the data sets from bottom, littoral and total samples a fairly good resemblance was found between these data sets. It is concluded that the semi-quantitative processing of macroinvertebrate fauna data leads to reliable results. One can use one sample per station, wherein different substrata are combined. Distinct clusters were recognized in more extreme environmental conditions such as brackish and acid waters. With the help of the macroinvertebrate fauna the other types of water could not easily be differentiated.  相似文献

The knowledge of the ecology and distribution of ostracods from inland waters in Australia is reviewed. The large diversity of the athalassic saline fauna is discussed in detail and species diversity in different areas is analysed; salinity tolerance of the halobiont species is also presented. In addition discussion deals with hatching, permanent versus ephemeral water fauna, mode of locomotion, large size of some species, variation in size and ornamentation of shell. A brief characterization is attempted of the ostracods and the type of habitats in which they live. Finally, the distribution, species diversity in different areas and the endemicity of the fauna are outlined and a comparison of this fauna is made with that of other parts of the world.  相似文献

The native area of gammarids from the so-called ‘Caspian complex’, Pontogammarus robustoides (G.O. Sars, 1894), Obesogammarus crassus (G.O. Sars, 1894), Dikerogammarus haemobaphes (Eichwald, 1841) and D. villosus (Sowinsky, 1894), is associated with brackish waters. Over the last several decades they have colonized the European inland waters and part of the brackish Baltic Sea. It is believed that anthropogenic increase in the salinity of inland waters facilitated their expansion. However, the influence of salinity on the dispersal of gammarid species outside their native area is not fully understood. We tested the hypothesis that salinity was a major factor in determining distribution, based on the abundance of Gammaridae in three coastal areas of low salinity (brackish Baltic), i.e. 0.3, 3.4 and 7.3 PSU, successfully inhabited by them. Additionally, for the first time, the effect of water salinity on the osmoregulatory capacity of O. crassus was examined under laboratory conditions, for the salinities given above. The experiments showed that similarly as in the case of other Caspian complex species, salinity values of about 7 PSU create better conditions for osmoregulation in O. crassus than lower salinities (i.e. 0.3 and 3.4 PSU). In the environmental part of the study, we observed that only D. villosus achieved a significantly higher abundance in the area of 7.3 PSU. Thus, we concluded that in the range of 0.3–7.3 PSU, salinity is not a key factor governing the distribution of Ponto-Caspian gammarids.  相似文献

The Ponto‐Caspian brackish‐water fauna inhabits estuaries and rivers of the Black, Azov and Caspian seas and is fragmented by higher salinity waters and a major interbasin watershed. The fauna is known for the high levels of endemism, complex zoogeographic histories, and as a recent source of successful invasive species. It remains debated whether the Black and Azov Sea brackish‐water populations survived unfavourable Pleistocene conditions in multiple separate refugia or whether the two seas were (repeatedly) recolonized from the Caspian. Using microsatellite and mtDNA markers, we demonstrate deep among‐ and within‐basin subdivisions in a widespread Ponto‐Caspian mysid crustacean Paramysis lacustris. Five genetic clusters were identified, but their relationships did not reflect the geography of the region. The Azov cluster was the most distinct (4–5% COI divergence), despite its geographic position in the corridor between Black and Caspian seas, and may represent a new species. In the northern Black Sea area, the Dnieper cluster was closer to the Caspian cluster than to the neighbouring Danube–Dniester–Bug populations, suggesting separate colonizations of the Black Sea. Overall, the data implied a predominant gene flow from the east to the Black Sea and highlight the importance of Caspian Sea transgressions in facilitating dispersal. Yet, the presence of distinct lineages in the Black Sea points to the persistence of isolated refugial populations that have gained diagnostic differences under presumably high mutation rates and large population sizes. The unfavourable Pleistocene periods in the Black Sea therefore appear to have promoted diversification of the brackish‐water lineages, rather than extirpated them.  相似文献

Cyprideis torosa (Jones , 1850) is a very common brackish water ostracod of the German coasts, but, despite empty valves are found occasionally in surface sediments of some modern inland waters, C. torosa could not be found living in modern athalassic waters of Germany so far. During interglacial periods, including the Holocene, however, fossils of this species are quite common in Central Germany, at a distance of more than 300 km away from the coasts of the Baltic and North Seas. All 31 Quaternary localities with C. torosa known so far from Germany are documented. C. torosa is an indicator for brackish waters and widely used as index‐fossil in palaeosalinity reconstructions relying on water chemistry bound morphological changes (nodes, sieve‐pores). The comparisons imply a general underestimation of palaeosalinity in oligo‐ to mesohaline athalassic waters if using nodes and sieve‐pores of C. torosa as proxy. A water chemistry (ionic composition) driven morphological response is assumed instead one by salinity only. Palaeosalinity estimations for athalassic waters, relying on morphological variability alone, should therefore be used with caution. Palaeosalinity trends, however, can be detected. Distinguishing thalassic and athalassic sediments with C. torosa is possible by using the associated ostracod fauna as a discriminator. Regarding the ecology and distribution of C. torosa, permanent, brackish, and shallow water bodies under relatively warm conditions are required for its settlement. The source of the salt are brines originating from Zechsteinian or Triassic underground evaporites. Warm and relatively dry climates could enhance the process for such water bodies of becoming salty, a situation present in Holocene Central Germany. The occurrence of C. torosa can therefore be used for palaeoclimatological studies. The most probable migration path of this ostracod species to athalassic waters is by avian transport. Forty-five ostracod species were identified for the first time in the Tahadart estuary (NW Morocco). They can be grouped into five different ecological assemblages, which characterise four estuarine ecozones. A first ecozone occurs in temporary waters located between the tidal channels of the inner estuary and it is characterised by ostracod species typical of fresh to brackish waters. In the main estuary area, the ostracod fauna is dominated by clearly euryhaline species that account for nearly 70% of the entire fauna. The relative abundance of the different assemblages allows us to subdivide the estuarine environment along a longitudinal profile into mouth, outer and inner estuary. The estuary's mouth displays the highest values of marine euhaline, phytal and periphytal as well as ubiquitous species and the lowest values of very euryhaline species; the latter are the only species present in the inner estuary. The outer estuary exhibits intermediate percentages of the different ecological assemblages. This distribution, characterized by the absence of limnic species, points to the influence of marine waters in an open estuary with a low fresh water input. In the estuary's mouth, as well as in the outer estuary, where the slikke and schorre are well developed, the distance to the emersion line is underlined by the lower occurrence of marine and ubiquitous species and the higher occurrence of the very euryhaline ones. The Tahadart estuary displays a moderate to high ostracod diversity with distinct differences among the ecological zones. The stress of this environment is highlighted by the low diversity characteristics of extreme environments, alike in the inner estuary and in some areas located far from the emersion level. The relative position with respect to the emersion line, as well as the presence of gross detritic sediments and vegetation, appear to be of importance for the good development of the ostracods.

The composition of brackish-water faunas on both sides of North America shows a high degree of similarity with the corresponding faunas in European brackish waters in terms of species of the Plathelminthes. Twenty species are common to both the Atlantic coast of Canada and Northern Europe; a further nine brackish-water plathelminths are common to the Pacific coast of Alaska and Europe; and two species occur in all three areas. These patterns of distribution must be regarded as the result of past or present connections between the American and European populations of brackish-water species. The most parsimonious explanation is the hypothesis that a species-rich community of brackish-water plathelminths has a northern circumpolar distribution.  相似文献

A hitherto undescribed population of gobies in the Greek brackish karstic Lake Vouliagmeni was identified as Millerigobius macrocephalus. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using partial mitochondrial ribosomal DNA sequences situates this species as a sister taxon to Zebrus zebrus, thus confirming earlier morphological work. Morphological variation as compared to previous studies on this species is discussed. This is the first report of M. macrocephalus occurring inland and under oligohaline conditions, underlining that our knowledge on diversity and distribution of the European gobiid fauna is still far from complete. The occurrence of this rarely observed fish species might enhance the conservational importance of the lake under study.  相似文献
