The effect of boron on the reproductive growth of four contrasting white clover cultivars was examined in a controlled environment and glasshouse experiment. Plants grown under a nutrient regime excluding boron and those receiving 0.5 mg/litre boron had fewer stolons, reproductive stolons and inflorescences than those receiving 1, 2 or 3 mg/litre. Inflorescences were also smaller and had fewer seeds per floret. A boron concentration of 1 mg/litre gave optimum reproductive growth, higher levels of boron giving no further increase. Peduncle length and nectar quantity, but not nectar quality, were also influenced by boron indicating a possible beneficial effect of this element on pollinator activity. Cultivars differed in both vegetative and reproductive growth. Cv. Gwenda, a small leaved cultivar, had more stolons but fewer inflorescences than cv. Menna and smaller inflorescences than cv. Olwen, a large leaved cultivar. Generally, these cultivars responded similarly to boron. The implications of these results for the reproductive growth of white clover are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Transplants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grown isolated from each other and in pairs placed at different distances apart. The paired plants developed asymmetrically and at the interface between paired clones both the density of nodes and of stolons appeared to reach ceiling values that were of the same order as those achieved in isolated clones. It is argued that the growth of plants of T. repens is controlled by the local conditions experienced by the plant parts and not by integrated growth of the whole. Transplants of three different genotypes of T. repens, which differed in growth form, were grown as neighbouring pairs and the calculated asymmetry of the plants was used to compare their mutual aggressivenes. The more compact (phalangeal) genotypes induced greater asymmetry in their neighbours than the more diffuse forms.  相似文献

A previous study found that increased phosphorus (P) supply to frequently defoliated white clover plants, growing in a low-P, dry soil, alleviated water stress symptoms and increased plant recovery on rewatering. In this study we determined how these stresses influence white clover growth. Measurements were made of the leaf canopy, stolon infrastructure and root system of the white clover plants growing in a low-P soil. Treatments included the factorial combination of four levels of P supply, two defoliation frequencies and two soil water treatments. White clover growth declined markedly when P-deficient plants were exposed to frequent defoliation and dry soil conditions. Leaf area was more affected than other parameters, in that the combination of stresses reduced leaf area to 2% of maximum observed for infrequently defoliated plants growing in high-P soil, with adequate water. Increased P supply generally increased the growth of all plant parts. Frequently defoliated plants growing in dry soil produced similar or greater leaf mass and leaf area as plants from similar treatments growing in wet soil, when the P supply increased to 50 mg P kg-1 soil. Higher P rates were able to negate the effect of dry soil on these frequently defoliated plants, as a result of larger water and P uptake. Also, the frequently defoliated plants with restricted root growth did not respond to a small increase in P supply (17 mg P kg-1 soil) for the leaf growth, irrespective of whether they were growing in wet or dry soil. Infrequently defoliated plants with greater root growth, compared to frequently defoliated plants, more than doubled their leaf mass with this P treatment.  相似文献

An aluminium (Al) tolerant genotype of white clover was compared with an Al susceptible genotype in artificial soil profiles in which exchangeable Al increased with depth. The tolerant genotype had a greater proportion of its root mass deeper in the soil than the susceptible genotype. Nitrogenase activity showed a similar pattern. Shoot Al concentration did not vary between the genotypes but root Al in the susceptible line was twice that in the tolerant genotype. Plant potassium content in the susceptible line was relatively less, probably in response to higher aluminium content.  相似文献

Flowers of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) are hermaphrodite and self-incompatible; their cross-pollination depends entirely on insect visitors, mainly bees (Apoidea). Because self-pollination of white clover occurs before flower anthesis, we determined whether selfing affected the pollination efficiency of a honeybee visit. We compared pollen deposition in emasculated and intact flowers following (1) a single honeybee visit, (2) open-pollination for a day and (3) enclosure in a cloth bag to prevent insect visits. In emasculated flowers, open-pollination resulted in more pollen deposited than after one visit (+30%) which is consistent with flowers being visited more than once by pollinators during the course of a day. On intact flowers, saturation of the stigma was achieved after the first visit of a honeybee (near 280 grains) because of self-pollination. Additional visits did not increase pollen deposits, but they improved pollen efficiency in terms of numbers of pollen tubes reaching the ovules. In such a context of easily saturated stigmas, self-pollen does not inhibit cross-pollen activity, but represents a constraint for pollination which demands multiple bee visits to each flower to achieve maximum fertilization. To increase our insight into the above- and belowground N flows in grass and grass-clover swards relations between crop and soil parameters were studied in a cutting trial with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) monocultures and ryegrass–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures. The effects of clover cultivar on herbage yield, the amount of clover-derived nitrogen, apparent N transfer to companion grass, dynamics of N and organic matter in the soil were estimated. The grass monocultures had very low DM yields (<2.1 t ha-1) and a low N concentration in the harvested herbage. During 1992–1995 the annual herbage DM yield in the mixtures ranged from 7.0 to 14.3 t ha-1, the white clover DM yield from 2.4 to 11.2 t ha-1 and the mean annual clover content in the herbage DM harvested from 34 to 78%. Mixtures with the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage and clover DM and had a higher clover content than mixtures with small/medium-leaved cvs. Gwenda and Retor. Grass cultivar did not consistently affect yield, botanical composition or soil characteristics. The apparent N2 fixation was very high, ranging from 150 to 545 kg N ha-1 in the different mixtures. For each tonne of clover DM in the harvested herbage 49 to 63 kg N was harvested, while the apparent N transfer from clover to grass varied between 55 and 113 kg N ha-1 year-1.The net N mineralization rate was lower under monocultures than under mixtures. The C mineralization and the amounts of C and N in active soil organic matter fractions were similar for monocultures and mixtures, but the C:N ratio of the active soil organic matter fractions were higher under grass than under mixtures. This explains the lower N mineralization under grass.  相似文献

Plants of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) cv. Olwen were grown in an open glasshouse maintained at a mean temperature of 20oC and ovule growth and seed production measured. Differences in the rate of growth of ovules within ovaries were observed as early as 2 days after pollination. Ovules reached a maximum size after 8 days with the smallest only half the size of the largest. After 8 days, the smallest ovules became flaccid and shrivelled. Ovule position within the ovary had little effect on the frequency of seed set and although there was an apparently higher probability that central ovules produced a seed than those nearer the peduncle or style this was not statistically significant. Inflorescence position and floret position on the inflorescence had a significant effect on the number of seeds per floret and seed weight; the first formed inflorescences and the first florets to be pollinated on each inflorescence had more seeds per floret and heavier seeds and fewer florets with no seed than later pollinated florets. There were also differences between florets within the same whorl. The role of a number of factors which may influence floret site utilisation are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of photoperiod and temperature on vegetative growth of seedling populations and clones of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) originating from various latitudes (58°48'–69°54'N) and altitudes (up to 1100 m above sea level) were studied in a phytotron. Dry matter production, stolon elongation, petiole elongation and leaf lamina size were enhanced by long photoperiod. The requirement for long photoperiod increased with decreasing temperature. At 6°C the maximum growth was recorded under 24-h daylength. At 18°C already an increase in photoperiod from 12 to 15 h significantly enhanced growth, and maximum growth was obtained at 21-h photoperiod. The studied populations responded similarly to daylength, and the results did not indicate photoperiodic ecotypes in the material. The southernmost clones and populations generally had the highest dry matter production at all temperature treatments (6–18°C). Variation between clones within one location was, however, significant, and rapidly growing clones were found also in high-latitude locations. Dry matter production was poorly correlated with the morphological characters observed, but in some cases significant correlation with leaf lamina size was found.  相似文献

Seed populations of white clover polymorphic for the presence/absence of both ovariogenic glucosides and the hydrolysing enzyme linamarase, were introduced into three natural populations. Over the first six months of life a significant increase in the frequency of linamarase containing individuals occurred. Estimated selection coefficients against plants lacking linamarase were in the region of 0.3. This result may have been due to selection at the enzyme locus alone, or to selection favouring cyanogenic individuals which possess both cyanogenic glucosides and enzyme.  相似文献

Genotypes of white clover that exhibited divergent responses to P were identified in a glasshouse pot trial. Six high P-responding genotypes were selected from previously identified high P-responding cultivars and 5 low P-responding genotypes were selected from previously identified low P-responding cultivars. These were crossed in a full diallel design without selfing and reciprocals were kept separate. The P-response of progeny lines was compared with parents. High P-response was dominant over low P-response with progeny from crosses between high and low P-response genotypes being similar to the high P-response parent. Reciprocal effects were not significant. The general combining abilities of high P-response genotypes were generally greater than that of the low P-response genotypes, although there were significant specific combining abilities. Narrow sense heritabilities for P response were moderate, 0.46 based on the linear coefficient and 0.33 based on the quadratic coefficient of the fitted response curves. The mode of inheritance, feasibility of manipulating differences in P response by breeding and future directions of this work are discussed.Deceased.Deceased.  相似文献

Four-leaf white clover is not found easily in nature due to its low appearance rate (1 in 10,000). Because people believe that it brings good luck and like to either keep it or present it to a loved one, it has commercial and ornamental value. To breed four-leaf clover, we exposed its flowers to γ-rays at the pollination stage. The M1 seeds produced following doses at 25–100 Gy showed an approximately 74% germination rate, with seedling survival at 46%. In the M1 generation of plants irradiated within that dose range, we found an increased frequency of four leaflets. One of them, Jeju Lucky-1 (JL-1), had a frequency of about 60%. To see whether that mutation was somaclonal or genetic, we observed its M2 generation and found that such a phenotype reappeared. Although our results demonstrated that the irradiation of fully mature flowers led to a higher frequency of 4-leaflets, we could not clearly explain the genetic mechanism involved. We suggest that JL-1 is valuable as a new variety, without further genetic fixation, because white clover can be propagated vegetatively by stolons. I.-J. Song and H.-G. Kang contributed equally to this work.  相似文献

The response to water stress was studied on white clover grown hydroponically. Two varieties (Crau and Huia) were both subjected to a moderate and a more-severe stress, induced by polyethylene glycol (10 and 20% respectively), in the presence of a nutrient solution poor in potassium (K1=0.005 mM), or abundantly supplied (K2=5mM). Dawn water potential and nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction activity) decreased with the increasing stress. Conversely, the stomatal resistance increased whenosmoticum was added. Crau had a lower stomatal resistance to the deficit, than did Huia. In relation with the K supply, treatment K2 confirmed the superiority of Crau. Crau also showed greater nodule mass and number than Huia. The data show relationships between dawn water potential, stomatal resistance and nitrogen fixation activity.  相似文献

The combined effects of soil water deficit and above and below ground interspecific plant competition on the growth, water-use efficiency (WUE), and measured carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) values of white clover and ryegrass were studied. White clover and ryegrass were grown in specially designed crates 1) individually; 2) in shoot competition; or 3) in shoot + root competition and either well-watered or at a moderate or severe soil water deficit. The effects of shoot + root competition on shoot dry matter growth were substantial and benefited both white clover and ryegrass when well-watered or at a moderate soil water deficit, while severely reducing white clover shoot dry matter growth at severe soil water deficit. Plant competition did not affect the WUE of white clover or ryegrass. As soil water deficit increased, the WUE of white clover did not change whereas the WUE of ryegrass increased and was greater than that of white clover. This was attributed to the lower leaf water conductance of ryegrass which conserved water and maintained growth longer compared to white clover. A stronger correlation existed between soil water deficit and measured δ13C values for ryegrass at each plant competition level (P<0.001) than existed for white clover (individual: P<0.01; shoot + root: P<0.001; shoot: P<0.10). Unlike white clover, the relationship between measured δ13C values and shoot dry matter growth indicated that C assimilation for ryegrass was dependent on type of plant competition. That WUE remained constant for white clover while measured δ13C values increased as soil water deficit increased, suggests that the role below ground respiration rate played in determining δ13C values increased. The WUE of white clover appears to be independent of the nature of the competition between plants and the soil water deficit level at which it is grown, whereas for ryegrass, the addition of root competition to shoot competition should lead to increases in its WUE. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The nitrogen relations of an inbred line of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) thought to exhibit an abnormally low capacity for NO3 uptake (line LNU) were compared with a line regarded as normal with respect to NO3 uptake (line NNU). Growth, nodulation, N2 fixation and NO3 uptake were measured over 7 weeks in flowing solution culture (Experiment 1) by plants dependent for N acquisition on either (i) NO3 uptake, (ii) NO3 uptake +N2 fixation, or (iii) N2 fixation only. Effects of plant N status on the short-term uptake and translocation of 15NH4 + and 15NO3 were also investigated (Experiment 2). Nitrate uptake per plant by –fix/+NO3 line LNU was 50% of uptake by line NNU over 35 days, and there were significant differences in specific uptake rates of NO3 between the lines over the first 24 days. The `low NO3 uptake' phenotype was indistinct under +fix/+NO3 treatment. Nitrate lowered specific rates of nitrogen fixation by line NNU but had no effect on line LNU. Only low N status line LNU plants had lower short-term rates of NH4 + and NO3 uptake than line NNU. It is concluded that the `low NO3 uptake' phenotype of line LNU is inconsistently expressed. Circumstantial evidence points to increased NO3 efflux and decreased xylem translocation of NO3 as possible explanations for the lower NO3 uptake by line LNU.  相似文献

Summary Sodium nitrate applications ranging from 0.36 to 22.84 mM N were shown to depress rates of nodule formation and reduce total nitrogen fixation (acetylene reduction) in white clover plants grown in aseptic test tube culture.Low nitrate levels gave an initial depression in symbiotic activity but the reduction was of short duration and these treatments were subsequently associated with enhanced rates of nodule formation and nitrogen fixation. As a result, phenotypic variation appeared to be strongly differentially affected by the amount of nitrate present. A subsequent experiment suggested that much of the variation was a consequence of early enhancement of plant growth rates by low levels of nitrate followed by rapid depletion thus giving a transitory inhibitory effect. This was confirmed in a third experiment in which the range of nitrate concentration was held constant. Differential effects on variability in nodule formation and nitrogen fixation were then greatly reduced but there was still a residual level of plant-to-plant variation. The results have clear implications for selecting genetic variants capable of fixing di-nitrogen in the presence of combined N. The provision of a single limiting dose of combined nitrogen to a population containing individuals with inherently different growth rates can bring about variations in the phenotypic expression of symbiotic characters. These variations are unlikely to be based on genetic factors which have a direct and stable effect on nodule development and nitrogenase activity. The implications of the results for plant breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cv. Olwen and three genotypes of each of three self-fertile inbred lines of white clover were grown from seed in a bee-proof glasshouse. When in flower, a series of crosses within and between the self-incompatible (SI) and self-fertile (SF) lines was made and ovule growth and seed production measured 7 and 28 days after pollination (DAP) respectively. At harvest, the SF plants had a lower proportion of ovules aborting and more seeds per floret than the SI plants, though the mean seed weight of the SI plants was greater. Ovule abortion was observed in both the SF and SI plants though the number of aborted ovules was greater in the SI plants. The stage when abortion occurred also differed. All of the ovule abortion in the SI plants occurred within a 7-day period after pollination. In the SF plants, some abortion was observed in this period but also between 7 and 28 DAP, when the seed was harvested. This suggested that abortion, up to 7 DAP, is due primarily to genetic factors whilst subsequent abortion, between 7 and 28 DAP, is due to non-genetic factors.  相似文献

Measurements of feeding damage by sitona weevil (Sitona lineatus L.) adults on differing numbers of seedlings of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) at the first and fourth trifoliate leaf stage were made in the glasshouse at 20°C. S. lineatus consumed more of the trifoliate component of the seedling. Sitona adults caused significant yield reduction at all levels of plant population. Total clover consumption increased with increasing size of sitona population, but consumption per adult weevil was reduced.  相似文献

Summary Spontaneous nodules developed on the roots of white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Ladino) in the absence ofRhizobium. A small subpopulation of uninoculated clover plants (0.2%) exhibited white, single-to-multilobed elongated structures on their root systems when grown without fixed nitrogen. Clonal propagation using aseptic stolons confirmed the genetic stability of the observation. Few if any viable bacteria of unknown origin were recovered from surfacesterilized structures. Nodule contents were incapable of eliciting nodulation. Histological observations showed that these structures possessed all the characteristic features of indeterminate nodules, such as active meristem, cortex, endodermal layer, vascular strands, and a central zone with parenchyma cells. Infection threads, intercellular or intracellular bacteria were absent. Instead, numerous starch grains were observed in the central zone, a feature absent in normal nitrogen-fixing nodules. Our observation broadens the concept of spontaneous nodulation, believed to be restricted to alfalfa (Medicago sativa), to other legumes, and suggests a degree of generality among indeterminately nodulated legumes displaying natural heterozygosity.  相似文献
