Abstract

Seasonal flight patterns of the bluegreen aphid (BGA), Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji (Homoptera: Aphididae) were studied. BGA had flight peaks twice a year in spring and autumn, BGA flight appeared to be diurnal. The main period of activity extended from 5 am to 7.30 pm.

The accumulated spring and autumn flight peaks lasted 422 Degree Days (DD) and 351 DD (2.9 and 2.4 BGA generations) respectively. Accumulated DD between the median of spring and autumn flights, and the autumn and following spring flight, was 1667 and 1676 DD; this corresponds to 11.5 and 11.6 BGA generations respectively. The use of DD for predicting BGA flight is discussed.  相似文献

Three theories about the origin of flight in pterosaurs have been proposed: 1) the arboreal parachuting theory (passive falling from trees leading to gliding and eventually to powered flight); 2) the cursorial theory (bipedal running and leaping leading directly to powered flight); and 3) the arboreal leaping theory (active leaping between branches and trees leading to powered flight). The available evidence as to the functional morphology of pterosaurs, and in particular their hindlimb, is reviewed and used to test the three theories. Pterosaurs were well suited for arboreality and their hindlimb morphology argues against cursoriality, but supports an arboreal leaping lifestyle for early pterosaurs or their immediate ancestors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: The undulating display flight of Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos has a territorial function on current consensus: we found that displays could occur at any location within a home range of territorial birds and were not more frequent at the territorial limits (as documented by a previous study) or around the nest site.

Aims: To test the null hypothesis that display activity does not spatially differ within the home range of territorial Golden Eagles.

Methods: We used 1488?h of observations of Golden Eagles between April 2003 and October 2004 (excluding November through January inclusive) on the Isle of Lewis, northwest Scotland involving primarily four territories. Territorial boundaries and nest sites were determined by the behaviour of the focal territorial birds. All flight activity was cast into three spatial categories (near-boundary, near-nest and elsewhere) and the relative occurrence of displays was referenced by overall flight activity recorded in these spatial categories.

Results: We failed to reject the null hypothesis. Prior findings of greater display rate at territory limits were not confirmed. Territorial Golden Eagles apparently displayed wherever they happened to be in their home range. There was no difference in display frequency between successful and failed breeding pairs and, within pairs, between successful and failed breeding seasons. Monthly changes in display activity did not differ from monthly changes in the presence of ‘intruding’ sub-adults. A peak in non-territorial bird activity in August and September was not reflected by a peak in display, however, we could not distinguish recently fledged ‘non-threatening’ birds in this period.

Conclusions: Undulating flight displays of Golden Eagles focused neither on territory boundaries nor the nest. Displays may be spontaneous or occur in response to the detection of potential trespassers or neighbours, however, we could not rule out any role of pair-bonding.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Background: Jet-lag may affect air-travelers crossing at least two time-zones and has several health-care implications. It occurs when the human biological rhythms are out of synch with respect to the day-night cycle at the country destination. Its effect in psoriasis is missing. We aimed to evaluate the effect of Jet-lag in psoriatic patients’ management. Methods: This is a prospective observational study that enrolled psoriatic patients that underwent a flight: patients who experienced jet-lag were compared to patients who did not experience jet-lag. Before the flight, a dermatologist recorded clinical and demographical data with particular attention to Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) and Disease Activity in Psoriatic Arthritis (DAPSA). Patients performed Self-Administered Psoriasis Area Severity Index (SAPASI), the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the pruritus Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores. After the flight, patients completed the SAPASI, DLQI and pruritus-VAS scores. Results: The sample recruited comprised of 70 psoriatic patients aged 42.4 ± 9.7 years (median 42.5 years). Thirty (42.9%) were males, mean BMI was 25.5 ± 2.2 kg/m2. Average disease duration was 15.2 ± 7.1 years, and 20 (28.6%) subjects had developed PsA. Average hours of flight were 5.4 ± 3.5 (median 3.5 h), with 34 (48.6%) subjects reporting jet-lag. At the multivariate regression analysis, the change in the SAPASI score resulted correlated with jet-lag (regression coefficient 1.63, p = .0092), as well the change in the DLQI score (regression coefficient = 1.73, p = .0009), but no change on the pruritus VAS scale was found. Conclusions: The present study suggests that jet-lag may influence disease severity and DLQI scores, but not itch in psoriatic patients.  相似文献

Abstract

There is evidence that space flight condition-induced biological damage is associated with increased oxidative stress and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. To explore possible mechanisms, changes in gene expression profiles implicated in oxidative stress and in ECM remodeling in mouse skin were examined after space flight. The metabolic effects of space flight in skin tissues were also characterized. Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-135) was launched at the Kennedy Space Center on a 13-day mission. Female C57BL/6 mice were flown in the STS-135 using animal enclosure modules (AEMs). Within 3–5 h after landing, the mice were euthanized and skin samples were harvested for gene array analysis and metabolic biochemical assays. Many genes responsible for regulating production and metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were significantly (p < 0.05) altered in the flight group, with fold changes >1.5 compared to AEM control. For ECM profile, several genes encoding matrix and metalloproteinases involved in ECM remodeling were significantly up-/down-regulated following space flight. To characterize the metabolic effects of space flight, global biochemical profiles were evaluated. Of 332 named biochemicals, 19 differed significantly (p < 0.05) between space flight skin samples and AEM ground controls, with 12 up-regulated and 7 down-regulated including altered amino acid, carbohydrate metabolism, cell signaling, and transmethylation pathways. Collectively, the data demonstrated that space flight condition leads to a shift in biological and metabolic homeostasis as the consequence of increased regulation in cellular antioxidants, ROS production, and tissue remodeling. This indicates that astronauts may be at increased risk for pathophysiologic damage or carcinogenesis in cutaneous tissue.  相似文献

Capsule: Nocturnal passerine migration patterns were studied by a network of weather radars within the East-Atlantic flyway providing large-scale information on the effect of a geographical barrier.

Aims: The aim of this study was to obtain a large-scale spatial overview of the effects of a sea barrier on migratory flyways in northern Spain/western France.

Methods: Weather radar data were used from five sites at the Bay of Biscay during nights in spring 2015 to calculate flight directions and migration traffic rates (MTRs).

Results: The highest MTRs were registered by the radars at the southeastern edge of the bay, with a gradual decrease northwards. Spring migration direction was generally NNE/NE. Continuous nocturnal migration pattern indicated migration over land in the south. The radar half way up the French coast exhibited bimodal migration intensities at night, indicating sea crossing, and the northernmost corner of the bay showed little migration.

Conclusions: Radar patterns indicated migration over land and sea during spring migration. Sea crossing occurred with flight distances of up to about 500?km. Most migration activity was observed in the radars along the southeastern section of the bay, indicating that the general migration flyway from Spain funnels through the eastern side of the north Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper a new method for the automatic classification of bird sounds is presented. Our method is based on acoustic parameters (features) taken from the first harmonic component computed from the sound spectrogram. The features are based on a line segment approximation of the first harmonic component. The final feature vectors, consisting of 16 real numbers, are then classified using a self-organizing map (SOM) neural network. Flight calls of four crossbill species (Loxia spp.) are used as a test example. In the first phase, an unsupervised network was trained and tested using common crossbill L. curvirostra flight calls recorded mainly in the Netherlands. The network was tested using two-barred L. leucoptera, Scottish L. scotica and parrot L. pytyopsittacus crossbill flight calls in the second phase. Finally, the results were validated applying the same network to flight calls of common crossbills and parrot crossbills recorded in Finland. The method automatically separated common crossbill flight calls from those of parrot crossbills. The classification accuracy of the Dutch recordings was 58% in the first phase and 54% in the second phase. The Finnish recordings were classified with 54% accuracy.  相似文献

Capsule Wintering female Mallards have a higher fat load than males which may compensate for their lower body size and ultimately improve their fitness.

Aims To investigate whether sex-related differences in biological processes in winter are associated with differences in body nutrient storage and flight capabilities and, if so, the possible implications for survival and reproductive performance.

Methods We analysed the body composition and the flight parameters of 35 male and 35 female Mallards wintering in western Europe on the Rhine river.

Results Males were 15% heavier and 18% larger than females, but the latter carried 27% more fat per unit body mass. Relative to body lipid mass, body protein mass was 11% lower for females. Wing loading was 7% lower in females and power loading was similar in both sexes.

Conclusions High lipid mass gives females survival capabilities to food shortage similar to males. This helps sustain them through their prebasic moult and breeding success. Heavier muscles in males compensate for their higher wing loading and thus improve pairing success. Wintering and reproductive strategies in Mallard seem to be closely linked through body reserves.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: We document previously undescribed nocturnal flight behaviour by Bearded Vultures Gypaetus barbatus using a combination of accelerometer and global positioning system (GPS) information.

Aims: To study the nocturnal flight activity of the Bearded Vulture and determine whether nocturnal flights could be linked to foraging behaviour.

Methods: We used both accelerometer and GPS location data of 11 Bearded Vultures in the Spanish Pyrenees along with 88 carcasses monitored with camera traps.

Results: Over half (55%, n?=?11) of the individuals tracked were recorded flying between 0.7 and 6.1?km on at least 19 different nights, including 37% that occurred when less than 20% of the moon was illuminated. Bearded Vultures displayed feeding activity in only 8.2% of the 146 feeding events existing during the hour after dawn and the hour before dusk.

Conclusions: Our findings suggest that foraging benefits do not explain the nocturnal flights. Disturbances or adverse weather conditions may result in the abandonment of an overnight roosting site. This could also explain why individuals recovered in the field showed impact injuries.  相似文献

Background and AimsThe beach strawberry, Fragaria chiloensis, is found in a narrow coastal band from the Aleutian Islands to central California and then jumps thousands of kilometres all the way to Hawaii and Chile. As it probably had a North American origin, it must have been introduced to the other locations by long-distance dispersal. The aim of this study was to determine which agent carried the beach strawberry to its Pacific and South American locations.MethodsA deductive framework was constructed to separate between the possible modes of long-distance dispersal involving animals, wind and ocean currents. Bird migration was subsequently identified as the most likely scenario, and then the routes, habitats, feeding preferences and flight distances of all the shorebird species were evaluated to determine the most likely carrier.Key ResultsSix species migrate between North America and Chile and feed on the beaches and rocky shores where F. chiloensis grows naturally: Black-bellied Plovers, Greater Yellowlegs, Ruddy Turnstones, Sanderlings, Whimbrels and Willets. Of these, only two eat fruit and migrate in long continuous flight: Ruddy Turnstones and Whimbrels. Two species travel between North America and Hawaii, eat fruit and forage on the beaches and rocky shores where F. chiloensis grows naturally: Pacific Golden-plovers and Ruddy Turnstones. Ruddy Turnstones eat far less fruit than Pacific Golden-plovers and Whimbrels, making them less likely to have introduced the beach strawberry to either location.ConclusionsWe provide evidence that F. chiloesis seeds were probably dispersed to Hawaii by Pacific Golden-plovers and to Chile by Whimbrels.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: Non-breeding waterbirds are more likely to respond to drone approach when in larger flocks, and responses are more likely in arable and coastal habitats than at inland lochs.

Aims: To investigate the extent to which drones are a potential source of disturbance to non-breeding waterbirds.

Methods: Using a commercially available quadcopter drone, we approached waterbird flocks of varying sizes in coastal, freshwater, and arable habitats following a standardized protocol.

Results: Waterbirds at coastal sites and in arable fields were more likely to respond to drone approach than those at inland freshwater bodies. Larger flocks were more likely to respond to drone approach and responded at a greater distance than smaller flocks.

Conclusion: Repeated drone use at coastal and arable sites with large aggregations of feeding or roosting waterbirds could cause energetically costly flight responses, increased stress, and effective loss of available habitat. At such sites, it may be beneficial to regulate recreational and commercial drone use to minimize potential disturbance effects.  相似文献

The apparent rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker Campephilus principalis in Arkansas, USA, previously feared extinct, was supported by video evidence of a single bird in flight (Fitzpatrick et al, Science 2005, 308:1460–1462). Abstract

Free‐running circadian rhythms of locomotor activity of Tenebrionid beetles Trigonoscelis gigas Reitt., taken from the Turkmenian sand desert, were monitored in DD. The effects of microgravity (μG) ‐11 days in space flight aboard the Russian BION‐10 “COSMOS”; satellite, and of 2G hypergravity ‐ seven days on a centrifuge, were determined.

Two kinds of effects were found.

In stable 2‐peak records, there was a moderate decrease of τ in μG and an increase of τ in 2G, both of about 0.3 hr.

In unstable records, alterations of gravity caused drastic deviations of τ and ?. Remarkably, two peaks of the activity rhythm, which are supposed to be controlled by separate oscillators, responded to gravity transitions in different ways.

Gravity effects on the circadian system could be explained from a direct effect on the oscillator(s) itself or from a feed‐back by altered locomotion to the pacemaker.

Thus, for the first time the gravity dependence of a free‐running circadian rhythm was proved in a combination of real space flight and centrifuge experiments.  相似文献

Capsule Fuel load is correlated with fuel deposition rate; stopover duration is affected by arrival fuel load.

Aims To determine the stopover duration, fuel management and flight ranges at departure of Blackcaps stopping over in northern Spain.

Methods Systematic mist-netting and ringing allowed the use of mark–recapture Cormack–Jolly–Seber models for the estimation of stopover duration. Trapped birds were measured and weighed in order to estimate mass gain. FLIGHT software was used to estimate flight ranges.

Results Stopover duration ranged from 3.6 to 13.6 days, and was negatively correlated with arrival body mass (assessed by body mass at the first capture event). On average, arrival body mass was 18.4 g, whilst body mass at departure was 19.8 g. No significant differences in arrival body mass and departure body mass were observed between age or sex classes. Mass deposition rate did not differ between age or sex classes (mean = 0.20 g/day). Birds recaptured one day after the first capture event lost mass, whilst recaptures from the second day onwards had a mean gain of mass; mass was observed to increase linearly with the stopover duration. Mass deposition rate was positively correlated with departure body mass. Finally, with a mean departure body mass of 19.8 g, a Blackcap stopping over in northern Spain should be able to fly up to 1100 km.

Conclusions Stopover duration assessed by Cormack–Jolly–Seber models was longer than that observed in birds recaptured more than once (‘minimum stopover duration’). Stopover was longer for birds arriving with less fuel. The positive relationship between departure body mass and mass deposition rate suggests a time-minimizing strategy. The lack of difference in fuel deposition rate between age and sex classes suggests a relatively abundant food supply at the study site, but other explanations might also account for the lack of age and sex differences, for example if competition for food was not determined by social hierarchies but by scramble competition. Departing fuel load would allow these birds to arrive at their wintering areas in southern Spain under still-air conditions, without needing to refuel.  相似文献

BackgroundThe basidiomycetous yeast Cryptococcus gattii is an emerging and primary pathogen. There is a lack of information about its environmental spread outside outbreak regions in Mediterranean Europe, North and South America. Environmental sampling for C. gattii and molecular characterization of the obtained isolates will provide an insight into the global spread of the various genotypes.MethodsWoody debris of native divi-divi (Caesalpinia coriaria) trees were sampled across Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean. Colonies suspected for Cryptococcus species were subjected to standard mycology investigations and identification by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. Isolates identified as C. gattii were subjected to amplified fragment length polymorphism genotyping, mating-type analysis and multi-locus sequence typing.ResultsTen colonies of C. gattii were cultured from different trunk hollows of the same divi-divi tree. Molecular characterization showed that all isolates were genotype AFLP6/VGII and mating-type α. Multi-locus sequence typing revealed that all isolates were genetically indistinguishable from each other.ConclusionsC. gattii is present in the environment of Bonaire, which suggests that this yeast is likely to be present in the environment of other Caribbean islands.  相似文献

Abstract

Eudonia sabulosella (Walker) is economically the most important hill country sod webworm in New Zealand. Female moths selected long, sparse pasture cover for oviposition. Adult flight patterns were assessed in relation to meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, rainfall, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and cloud cover) as well as lunar cycle phase. Moths were responsive to wind speed and direction, aggregating on slopes from east through south to west (i.e., 180° arc) particularly those of SW orientation, at wind speeds of ≤ 10 km/h. At higher wind speeds adults were confined to leeward slopes only within the 180° arc. Light rain was correlated with increased flight and oviposition. In sites where rainfall coincided with strong winds which confined adults, especially over favourable (long, sparse) pasture types, much oviposition occurred. Grasses in these sites were susceptible to larval sod webworm feeding damage several months later. Pasture management to remove the favoured sward type may therefore constitute an effective means of pest control for E. sabulosella on hill country.  相似文献

Abstract

The circadian rhythm in the flight activity of a tropical microchiropteran bat Taphozous melanopogon responds at all phases with delay phase shifts to single light‐on steps (DD/LL transfers). The circadian rhythm responds at all phases with advance phase shifts to single light‐off steps (LL/DD transfers). Phase shifts were measured from the delays or advances of the onsets of flight activity on days following DD/LL and LL/DD transfers relative to the temporal course of the onsets of activity in controls. The magnitude of the phase shifts was a function of the phases in which the transfers were made. The On‐PRC and Off‐PRC plotted from such data are mirror‐images in their time‐course and wave‐form.

The phase shifts of the circadian rhythm in either direction were accompanied by changes in period (for the duration of our recordings after die transfer). The period lengthened following a delay shift and it shortened following an advance shift. The phase shifts are abrupt and discernible in the first cycle after perturbation.
