Summary In nondiapause adults raised under a long-day photoperiod, the critical daylength for diapause induction was between 13 and 14 h although some individuals did not respond to the short-day photoperiod and went on laying eggs. In postdiapause adults in which LD 1311 induced the first diapause (L13 insects), the critical daylength for diapause reinduction was between 13 and 14 h, whereas it was between 12 and 13 h in postdiapause adults in which LD 1014 induced the first diapause (L10 insects). Under LD 1311, a small proportion of L10 insects went into the second diapause after great delay as compared with L13 insects. Under LD 1014, on the other hand, L10 insects went into the second diapause more rapidly than L13 insects. Therefore, the photoperiod which had induced the first diapause affected the photoperiodic induction of the second diapause not only in the critical daylength but also in the speed of response. Aspects of the induction of diapause were studied in a Dutch strain of the phytoseiid miteAmblyseius potentillae. The photoperiodic response curve was of the long-day type, with a sharply defined critical daylength of 14.5 h. Critical daylength varied only little at temperatures between 15.0 and 22.5°C.All post-embryonic and possibly even late-embryonic stages of development were found to be sensitive to photoperiod; sensitivity appeared to be maximal during the protonymphal stage.It is shown that -carotene is necessary for some early step in the physiological mechanism of photoperiodic induction, and not (or not exclusively) for the expression of the diapause response.Two points of sensitivity to light could be demonstrated in the nights ofld 1311 andld 1212 long-night regimes, using 1-h night interruptions. These results are similar to those obtained in lightbreak experiments with spider mites and insects. However, no effect was found with light interruptions applied during the dark phase of anld 1014 long-night regime.In resonance experiments with a constant photophase (12 h) and a variable scotophase, a weak rhythmic response was found at 22.5°C; at 19.0°C this effect was completely absent.The relative humidity experienced by the mites during diapause induction as well as during diapause development influenced the rate of diapause completion under long days (ld 168). Diapause duration appeared to be shortest when the mites experienced low relative humidity (35±5%) during diapause induction and high relative humidity (75±5%) during diapause termination, and longest under the reverse conditions.  相似文献

Summary A comparative study was made of the photoperiodic and thermoperiodic induction of diapause in the phytoseiid mite Amblyseius potentillae. Sensitivity to thermoperiod was found to be highest during the protonymphal and deutonymphal stages, with some sensitivity still being present in the young adult. Summation of both photoperiodic and thermoperiodic cycles was shown to take place, which demonstrated the presence of a photoperiodic counter as well as a thermoperiodic counter in these mites. Vitamin A appeared to be necessary for some early step in the physiological mechanism of diapause induction and not just for the expression of the diapause response. The light sensitivity threshold for photoperiodic induction of diapause was found to be extremely low, viz. less than 0.02 W/cm2. Moreover, the light sensitivity threshold appeared to be strongly temperature dependent in A. potentillae. Experiments in which the mites experienced various sequences of short-day photoperiods and short-day thermoperiods, applied either concurrently or in succession, showed that the information collected by the photoperiodic counter and the thermoperiodic counter is integrated into one induction sum. Petrobia harti (Ewing) displays a facultative summer diapause in the egg stage. An adult female will lay only either diapause or non-diapause eggs throughout her life. In the laboratory, diapause eggs are laid by females which develop on detachedOxalis articulata leaves under long-day photoperiods and a relatively low temperature of 19±1°C.Diapause occurs in a stage of advanced embryonic development, in which the embryo appears U-shaped when observed from the egg's ventral side. Embryonic development ceased at this stage, and no further growth occurred when the eggs were kept under a relative humidity of about 70% in various photoperiod and temperature conditions. However, when the eggs were hydrated by placing them on wet cotton wool, development in some embryos (apparently in those which had completed their diapause development) proceeded beyond the U-stage at a rate similar to that in non-diapause embryos and the eggs hatched.Under LD 168 and 19±1°C or 26±1°C, the later from oviposition the period of egg hydration started, the higher the percentage of diapause termination. Under LD 168 and 26±1°C, diapause termination occurred mostly during the first week of hydration, while at 19±1°C mostly during the second and third week.At 26±1°C, in eggs hydrated 15 days but not 30 days from oviposition, the percentage of diapause termination was higher under a long-day than under a short-day photoperiod.Under LD 168, when the eggs were hydrated continuously from oviposition or starting 15, 30 and 45 days from it, the percentage of diapause termination was higher at 26±1°C than at 19±1°C.The percentage of diapause-laying adult females and the intensity of egg diapause were higher when the pre-imaginal mites grew at LD 1212 and 19±1°C, than when they grew at LD 168 and 26±1°C. This maternal effect on egg diapause intensity was expressed when the eggs were maintained at LD 1212 and 19±1°C but not at LD 168 and 26±1°C.  相似文献

Summary Zygaena trifolii is a long-day insect with temperature-dependent photoperiodic responses. All larval instars are sensitive to photoperiod; however, diapause may occur at the third larval stage or any subsequent larval instars. There were quantitative differences within populations in the threshold photoperiod for diapause induction. The diapause response was polymorphic, so that larvae might enter diapause at different instars under the same culture conditions. Furthermore, decreasing photoperiods below a critical daylength shifted the diapausing instar towards earlier stages. Geographic strains of Z. trifolii showed discontinuous clinal variation. Near the northern edge of the distribution [Cologne (Köln), FRG], there is first an obligatory diapause, mainly during early instars, and additional facultative (repeat) diapauses during later larval instars in subsequent years. In the southern part of its distribution, this burnet moth is partially bivoltine in the field with a facultative first developmental arrest and a decreased capacity for repeated diapause (Valencia, Spain; Marseille, France). Further experiments indicated that the photoperiodically controlled diapause reaction is also influenced by the number of photoperiodic cycles experienced during the period spent in each larval instar, which depends on temperature. The phytophagous bug Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae) produces two or three generations per year in Central Japan and overwinters in the adult stage. In bugs from the Kyoto population (35°00 N, 135°45 E), we studied (1) the effects of day-length on the nymphal and preoviposition periods under constant photoperiod at 20.5 °C, and (2) photoperiodic induction of adult diapause at 20.5 °C and under a combination of constant photoperiod and natural daily rhythm of temperature in the forest-steppe zone of Russia (50°38 N, 35°58 E). Then, we examined (3) the timing of diapause induction under quasi-natural conditions in the same region, far outside the species' natural geographical range. At 20.5 °C, the nymphal period in both males and females was significantly longer under regimes with shorter photophases than under those with longer photophases. The preoviposition period in females was significantly longer under the near-critical long-day regime L14:D10 than under typical long-day regimes (L15:D9, L16:D8, and L17:D7). The critical day-length for diapause induction was shorter under conditions of natural daily rhythm of temperature than those reported at constant 20, 25, and 30 °C. Under quasi-natural conditions in the forest-steppe zone, R. clavatus entered diapause in September, much later than the local populations of true bugs studied to date. This experiment showed that R. clavatus was maladapted to new environmental conditions: diapause was induced too late with the result that all or most nymphs hatched in late August or early September will die.  相似文献

The band-legged ground cricket Pteronemobius nigrofasciatus shows a clear photoperiodic response at 25°C with respect to the control of the induction of embryonic diapause. When crickets were reared under a short-day (LD 12 12) photoperiod and then transferred to a long-day (LD 16 8) photoperiod upon adult emergence, the adults mainly laid nondiapause eggs. However, adults maintained continuously under short-day conditions laid dispause eggs. When compound eyes were bilaterally removed after adult emergence, the crickets mainly laid nondiapause eggs, irrespective of the photoperiod. Thus, the adults completely lost their sensitivity to photoperiod after bilateral removal of their compound eyes. Unilateral removal of the compound eye also affected the crickets under a short-day photoperiod, and the incidence of diapause eggs was intermediate between that laid by intact adults and that laid by adults after the bilateral removal of compound eyes. The incidence of diapause eggs in sham-operated crickets was not significantly different from that in intact crickets under both sets of photoperiodic conditions. These results show that P. nigrofasciatus perceives the photoperiod through its compound eyes.  相似文献

Summary Diapause characteristics of nine local populations of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acarina: Tetranychidae) occurring on rose in central Japan were investigated. The percentage of females that entered diapause at 18° C and 9L: 15D photoperiod ranged between 0 and 77%. In addition, both photoperiodic and temperature responses varied widely among these populations. We suggest that temperature response might be a better trait than photoperiodic response for selection among local populations. Females in diapause survived –24° C better than those that were not. However, no difference in cold hardiness among these populations was found. The mite responded rapidly to artificial selection for low and high diapause percentage. The response was asymmetrical, being easier in the direction of low diapause percentage. Reciprocal and back crosses using selected low and high diapause percentage cultures showed that the genetic control of diapause was complicated. Neither the lowdiapause nor the high-diapause trait dominated over the other. However, the low-diapause trait seemed to be stronger. The results of this study suggest that variation in diapause response is maintained by (1) adaptation to local environments and (2) the complexity of the genetics of diapause. Such variation may provide the genetic raw material for natural selection and is a prerequisite for the extension of ecological range.  相似文献

The effect of larval diet on diapause induction in the Israeli strain of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), was studied in a field trial using intact apple fruits of two varieties: Ana (early-ripening, in the end of June) and Granny Smith (late-ripening, in October). Diapause incidence increased as fruit age (determined as days from fruit-set) progressed. These results corroborate former studies on other strains of the codling moth, where excised fruits were used.The combination of 80-day-old, fully ripe, Ana fruit treatment with the longest days of the year, yielded 38% diapause. This result demonstrates that mature fruit (inducing diapause) cannot completely override the effect of long day (averting diapause), but does confirm that larval diet modifies the photoperiodic induction of diapause in the codling moth.Deceased, October 1988  相似文献

The dynamics of coupled biological oscillators can be modeled by averaging the effects of coupling over each oscillatory cycle so that the coupling depends on the phase difference between the two oscillators and not on their specific states. Average phase difference theory claims that mode locking phenomena can be predicted by the average effects of the coupling influences. As a starting point for both empirical and theoretical investigations, Rand et al. (1988) have proposed d/dt= — K sin ), with phase-locked solutions =arcsin( /K), where is the difference between the uncoupled frequencies and K is the coupling strength. Phase-locking was evaluated in three experiments using an interlimb coordination paradigm in which a person oscillates hand-held pendulums. was controlled through length differences in the left and right pendulums. The coupled frequency c was varied by a metronome, and scaled to the eigenfrequency v of the coupled system K was assumed to vary inversely with c. The results indicate that: (1) and K contribute multiplicatively to (2) =0 or = regardless of K when =0; (3) 0 or regardless of when K is large (relative to ); (4) results (1) to (3) hold identically for both in phase and antiphase coordination. The results also indicate that the relevant frequency is c/v rather than c. Discussion high-lighted the significance of confirming =arcsin(/K) for more general treatments of phase-locking, such as circle map dynamics, and for the 11 phase-entrainment which characterizes biological movement systems.  相似文献

Summary The time measuring system ofDrosophila littoralis strains originating between 40–70° N was found to be highly variable and latitude dependent. The critical daylength for photoperiodic adult diapause varied from 12 h or no diapause response in the south to 20 h in north. The median timing of pupal eclosion rhythm varied correspondingly from 21 h to 12 h from lights off in LD 321, and the period of free-running rhythm of eclosion from 24 h to 19 h. The phase of the free-running rhythm was also variable, and correlated with the phase of the entrained rhythm. Latitudinal variation in the entrained rhythm of eclosion and in diapause is adaptive, leading to eclosion early in the morning and to overwintering at the adult stage. In some strains with a late phase of eclosion, strong transient cycles were seen following the transition from LL to DD. A total damping of the free-running eclosion rhythm within 2–7 days was common to all strains. This damping was more pronounced in the northern strains. The phase and period of eclosion rhythms were statistically independent. Diapause was not correlated with any parameters of the eclosion rhythm in the analysis. Summary In this first article on the carotenoids of Myxobacterales we report on the minor carotenoids of Stigmatella aurantiaca: phytoene, phytofluene, lycopene, -carotene, 4-keto--carotene, 1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy--carotene, 4-keto-1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy--carotene, 4-keto-1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy-torulene, and 1,2,1,2-tetrahydro-1,1-dihydroxy-lycopene. Summary On t.l.c. plates 125I-cholera toxin binds to a disialoganglioside tentatively identified as GDlb with about 10 times less capacity than to ganglioside GM1. Binding of labeled toxin to both gangliosides was abolished in presence of excess amounts of unlabeled B subunit. Ganglioside extracts from human or pig intestinal mucosa showed toxin binding to gangliosides GM1 and GD1b. Summary A model has been developed which describes in mathematical terms the incidence of diapause in the spider miteTetranychus urticae under different photoperiodic regimens. The model has been derived from Beck's (1974a, b, 1975, 1976a) Dual System Theory of photoperiodic time measurement, by means of a number of essential alterations and modifications. The spider mite's model is composed of two hour-glass timers, one of which starts at lights-off and measures the length of the night, whereas the other is initiated both by the onset of the first hour-glass timer and by lights-on. This second hour-glass defines the time at which the first hour-glass is read off, the state of the first hour-glass at this particular time being decisive for the developmental alternative (diapause or nondiapause) to be determined. The model may be classified as a form of internal coincidence according to the terminology of Pittendrigh (1972), since it is based on the interaction of two internal systems rather than on the coincidence of light with a particular light-sensitive phase of the timing mechanism, as in the case of external coincidence (cf. Saunders, 1978). Good agreement is attained between diapause incidences predicted by this model and incidences observed in spider mites, both in the diapause induction response curve and in asymmetrical skeleton photoperiods.The authors are grateful to Dr. S.D. Summary Detailed restriction enzyme analysis of the DNA from a Chinese female showed that one of her chromosomes had a >17.5 kb deletion of DNA, including the , 2, and 1 globin genes, which is present in many Southeast Asians with an -thalassemia-1 chromosome. Her normal chromosome had the expected cluster of -like globin genes (5----2-1-3), but the segment of DNA between the two globin genes was elongated by some 0.5–0.7 kb. Analyses of various restriction sites suggested that this normal variant of the human globin gene complex is due to a crossover between a normal chromosome with () and a chromosome with an -thalassemia-2 (–3.7) and an -21-hybrid gene.  相似文献

Summary Crude protein extracts from single seeds of nondomesticated Mexican bean accessions were analysed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for variability in phaseolin protein. Six new phaseolin types; M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, which contained polypeptides within the same range of molecular weights (51,000 to 45,000 daltons) as occur in the S, T and C phaseolin types of cultivated beans were identified. No T and C types were found among the non-domesticated Mexican accessions, and the S type occurred in less than 7% of the seeds screened. Genetic analyses of F2 progenies from crosses between Sanilac (S), and five of the M types showed that each M phaseolin phenotype was allelic to the S type and expressed codominantly.  相似文献

The 7S NGF complex from the male mouse submaxillary gland consists of the , and subunits in the ratio 22. The (NGF) subunit contains all the known biolocial activity of 7S NGF. The and subunits are both members of glandular kallikrein gene family, yet only subunit has protease activity. The subunit plays a role in the processing of preproNGF to its mature form, while the role of the subunit is not yet understood. Despite the fact that 7S NGF has been extensively characterized, no other NGF complex has been characterized, nor have the or subunits been observed in tissues which express NGF. We have therefore purified and characterized the NGF complex from the submaxillary glands of the ratMastomys natalensis in order to more fully understand the roles of the and subunits. The NGF complex from M. natalensis contains subunits similar to those found in mouse 7S NGF. Although similar, there are significant differences between mouse and M. natalensis NGF complexes, especially in the degree of post-translational modification of the and NGF subunits, the expression of esterase activity and the ease with which the complexes dissociate. Evidence is presented that suggests that the NGF complex from M. natalensis may consist of subunits in the ratio 2. The structure, function, and evolutionary history of globin genes have been the subject of extensive investigation over a period of more than 40 years, yet new globin genes with highly specialized functions are still being discovered and much remains uncertain about their evolutionary history. Here we investigate the molecular evolution of the -globin gene family in a marsupial species, the tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii. We report the complete DNA sequences of two -like globin genes and show by phylogenetic analyses that one of these genes is orthologous to embryonically expressed -globin genes of marsupials and eutherians and the other is orthologous to adult expressed -globin genes of marsupials and eutherians. We show that the tammar wallaby contains a third functional -like globin gene, -globin, which forms part of the -globin gene cluster. The position of -globin on the 3 side of the -globin cluster and its ancient phylogenetic history fit the criteria, originally proposed by Jeffreys et al. (1980), of a fossil -globin gene and suggest that an ancient chromosome or genome duplication preceded the evolution of unlinked clusters of - and -globin genes in mammals and avians. In eutherian mammals, such as humans and mice, -globin has been silenced or translocated away from the -globin locus, while in marsupials -globin is coordinately expressed with the adult -globin gene just prior to birth to produce a functional hemoglobin (2 2).  相似文献

Summary This work deals with the ability of phage 80 to provide defective mutants of with their missing functions. Functions Involved in Recombination. As shown by others, the Int mechanism of 80 cannot excise prophage . However, 80 efficiently excises recombinants from tandem dilysogens, using its Ter mechanism. Likewise, the nonspecific mechanism Red is interchangeable between 80 and . Maturation of DNA by 80. The Ter recombinants excised by 80 from tandem dilysogens are packaged into a 80 protein coat. This contrasts with the fact, already mentionned by Dove, that 80 is extremely inefficient for packaging phage superinfecting a -lysogen. The latter result is also found when the helper phage is a hybrid with the left arm of (80hy4 or 80hy41 — see Fig. 1). However, the maturation of the superinfecting is much more efficient if the 80hy used as a helper has the att-N region of (like 80hy1). Conversely a with the att-N region of 80 (hy6 — see Fig. 1) is packaged more efficiently by 80 or 80hy4 than by 80hy1. It is suggested that the maturation of chromosome superinfecting an immune cell requires a recombination with the helper phage. Vegetative Functions. Among the replicative functoons O and P, the latter only can be supplied by 80. That N mutants are efficiently helped by 80 does not tell that 80 provides the defective with an active N product; the chromosomes are simply packaged into a 80 coat. This shows that 80 is unable to switch on the late genes of . That neither 80 nor any of the 80hy tested can provide an active N product is shown in a more direct way by their complete failure to help N -r14; this phage carries a polar mutation which makes the expression of genes O and P entirely N-dependant. The maturation of a N - by 80 contrasts with the fact that mutants affected in late genes (A, F or H) are not efficiently helped by 80. This suggests that the products coded by these genes are not interchangeable between 80 and , and that packaging of DNA into 80 coats is possible but inhibited when late proteins are present in the cell. Activation of the Late Genes. Among the im 80 h + hybrids tested, only 80hy41 is able to switch on the late genes of a N defective mutant. This hybrid differs from the other hybrids studied here, by the fact that it has the Q-S-R region of (see Fig. 1). The results are consistant with the view that the product of Q gene is sufficient for activating the late genes of a DNA. N would thus control the expression of late genes only indirectly by controlling the expression of gene Q (Couturier & Dambly have independantly reached the same conclusion, 1970). Furthermore the failure of 80 and of the 80hy1 and 80hy4 to activate the late genes of would imply that these phages are unable to provide an Q product active on the chromosome Reciprocally, switches on the late genes of prophage 80hy41, but not of prophages 80hy1 and 80hy4. This suggests that the initiation of late genes expression takes place at a main specific site located in the Q-S-R region of the chromosome. The expression of the late genes would thus be sequential, and proceed through the left arm only when steaky ends cohere. Similar conclusions were reached independantly by Toussaint (1969) and by Herskowitz and Signer (1970).
