Summary Specimens of the terrestrial gastropod Arianta arbustorum were fed on cadmium- or copper-enriched agar plates with the aim of performing an input/output analysis and of studying the distribution of these metals in several organs of the snails. After a feeding period of 20 days about 45% of cadmium were lost. 36% accumulated in the hepatopancreas, where a cadmium concentration of more than 500 g/g was measured. The efficiency of cadmium assimilation decreased from about 90% at the beginning to about 55% after 20 days. Copper was distributed more evenly than cadmium, but the main site of copper storage seemed to be the foot/mantle tissues, where 49% of the ingested copper were found. The efficiency of copper assimilation always exceeded 95%. The patterns of distribution and assimilation of copper and cadmium are discussed in relation to differences in the cytological and biochemical detoxification mechanisms which exist for these metals in molluscs.  相似文献

Conclusions Contrasting effects of generalist and specialist herbivores can explain why all plants have not evolved high levels of defence. Maintenance of variation in concentration of defence substances can be explained by a shifting balance between natural selection for defence against herbivory by specialists and generalists. Generalist natural enemies will shift the optimal defence curve to lower concentrations of defences. Physiological costs of production of defence substances and selection by specialist herbivores of plant phenotypes with higher levels of defence compounds for sequestration are no essential elements of this model. They may, however, adjust the predicted optimum defence function and contribute to maintenance of variation of concentrations of defence substances.  相似文献

Microsphaeropsis amaranthi and Phomopsis amaranthicola are potential biological control agents for several Amaranthus species. In an effort to understand the initial infection processes with these pathogens, a study was conducted of the conidial germination and germ tube length (μm) on the weed leaf surfaces at 21 °C and 28 °C. Weeds included Amaranthus rudis, A. palmeri, A. powellii, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus, A. hybridus, and A. albus. For P. amaranthicola, conidial germination and germ tube length varied among the seven weed species at both temperatures, while for M. amaranthi the differences in germ tube lengths were significant among weed species only at 21 °C. While the conidia of M. amaranthi and P. amaranthicola germinated on the leaf surfaces of all seven weed species, temperature appeared to impact the number and length of germ tubes on the leaf surfaces. The percentage of germinated conidia and the length of germ tubes at both temperatures were often greater for M. amaranthi than for P. amaranthicola. In order for the fungal pathogen to successfully infect and kill a weedy host, conidia must germinate and form a germ tube, two processes that vary with host species and temperature for M. amaranthi and P. amaranthicola. The extent to which successive infection processes, e.g., penetration, invasion and colonization, contribute to host specificity warrants study.  相似文献

Summary Water willow and grey alder were grown on a raised sphagnum bog in central Sweden. The stands were intensively treated by daily irrigation and fertilization during the growing period in order to improve site fertility. After a 2-year establishment period high production rates were achieved in willow stands, 0.8 kg stem dry weight m–2 year–1 on current plus one (C+1) year old shoots. In these stands the canopy was closed with a leaf area index (LAI) that peaked at approximately 7. The canopy in the alder stand did not close during the initial 3 years of growth and the measured production rate was relatively low, at approximately 0.4 kg dry weight m–2 year –1 in the last year. The leaf nitrogen content was 3%–4% of dry weight during the summer and the other studied mineral elements were in almost optimal proportion to nitrogen. This was considered to be an effect of the intensive fertilization regime. Above-ground production close to maximum yield was attained in the prevailing conditions of soil, climate and biomass partitioning.  相似文献

This mass spectrometric study confines itself to peptide masses in the range of 500-1500Da. Adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) that are predicted from the genome of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, and the silk moth, Bombyx mori, are shown to exist as expressed peptides in the corpora cardiaca (CC) of the respective species as evidenced by various mass spectrometric methods. Additionally, some related species were included in this study, such as the tenebrionid beetles Tribolium brevicornis and Tenebrio molitor, as well as the moths Spodoptera frugiperda, Spodoptera littoralis, Mamestra brassicae and Lacanobia oleracea, to investigate whether AKH peptides are structurally conserved in the same genus or family. Interestingly, the AKH peptide of T. brevicornis is identical to that of T. molitor but not to the ones of its close relative T. castaneum. Moreover, other peptides in T. brevicornis, such as various FXPRL amides (=pyrokinins), also match the complement in T. molitor but differ from those in T. castaneum. All the CC of beetles lacked the signal for the mass of the peptide corazonin. All moths have the nonapeptide Manse-AKH expressed in their CC. In addition, whereas the silk moth has the decapeptide Bommo-AKH as a second peptide, all other moths (all noctuids) express the decapeptide Helze-HrTH. In M. brassicae and L. oleracea a novel amidated Gly-extended Manse-AKH is found as a possible third AKH. The noctuid moth species also all express the same FLRF amide-I, corazonin, and a group-specific isoform of a gamma-PGN-(=gamma-SGNP) peptide. In L. oleracea, however, the latter peptide has a novel sequence which is reported for the first time, and the peptide is code-named Lacol-PK.  相似文献

Polyamines (PAs) retarded the senescence of leaf discs of two diverse speciesof rose viz., Rosabourboniana andRosa damascena, while polyamine biosynthetic inhibitorsdifluoromethylornithine (DFMO), difluoromethylarginine (DFMA), methylglyoxal-bis(guanylhydrazone) (MGBG) and abscisic acid (ABA) promoted senescence. Sperminewas significantly the most effective polyamine in retarding senescence inR. bourboniana while MGBG and DFMA were more prominent inaccelerating senescence in R. damascena and R.bourboniana respectively. Protein and RNA content were significantlyhigher in polyamine treated leaf discs compared to those treated with polyaminebiosynthetic inhibitors and ABA. Total and reducing sugars decreased under alltreatments while the starch content increased significantly only in polyaminetreated leaf discs. Peroxidase and cellulase activities were retarded bypolyamine treatments and accelerated by polyamine biosynthetic inhibitors andABA. The role of PAs is discussed in relation to senescence.  相似文献

Performance of leaf beetle larvae on sympatric host and non-host plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Studies asking the ability of insects to utilize novel host plants often use novel hosts that are allopatric with the insect population under investigation. However, since the outcomes of species interactions are often site-specific, such studies cannot tell us whether a plant would actually be used by a given insect population if the plant grew sympatrically with it. We therefore performed a quantitative genetics experiment to analyse the performance of larvae of the leaf beetle Oreina elongata Suffrian (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Chrysomelinae) on two host and three non-host plants, collected from a site where insects and plants co-occur in the Western Alps. When raised on the non-host Petasites albus (L.), larvae were able to survive equally well as on the two hosts, Adenostyles alliariae (Gouan) and Cirsium spinosissimum (L.), whereas they did not survive on the two other non-hosts, Peucedanum ostruthium (L.) and Rumex alpinus L. On P. albus, growth rate was slightly lower and development time slightly longer than on the two hosts. We found a genotype by environment interaction only for growth rate but not for development time and survival. However, the shape of the reaction norms of growth rates suggests that it is unlikely that selection could favour the inclusion of P. albus into the host range of the study population.  相似文献

The leaf oils of both subspecies of Atherosperma moschatum have been investigated to determine if there were any chemical differences between the two subspecies. While both subspecies of A. moschatum contained methyl eugenol (55–87%), safrole (5–20%) and linalool (1–6%), camphor (5–10%) was found to be only in the oils of A. moschatum subsp. moschatum and to be either absent or, at most, less than 0.5% in the oils of A. moschatum subsp. integrifolium. There was also a range of monoterpene hydrocarbons and 1,8-cineole, all in the range of 0.1–5%, that were present in subspecies moschatum but virtually absent in subspecies integrifolium.  相似文献

The levels of two subunits of chloroplast ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), total soluble proteins, carbon and leaf nitrogen content, and photosynthetic pigments in various plants (avocado, oak, olive, and strawberry) grown in vitro and ex vitro were analysed. Compared to ex vitro grown plants, micropropagated avocado, oak, and strawberry showed a markable decrease in large subunit Rubisco. However, the small subunit only decreased in strawberry and oak. Contrary to this, olive did not reveal any difference in the level of either subunit. The C/N ratio increased significantly in in vitro grown plants, except in the case of olive, where an opposite behaviour was found. Leaf chlorophyll concentration on unit mass basis was higher in all the in vitro plants than in those of greenhouse- grown plants. Only avocado plantlets showed a statistically significant decrease in total soluble proteins. Further, overall data suggest that in vitro cultural conditions have a species-specific influence on large and small subunits of Rubisco, independent of the protein, chlorophyll, or nitrogen level.  相似文献

Biofilm formation and growth on equipment surfaces is detrimental to papermaking processes. However, a fundamental understanding leading to an optimal control strategy is yet to be found. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are being increasingly applied in the papermaking processes. Among them, the most frequently applied, N-alkyl-benzyl-dimethyl ammonium chloride, was employed in this study. To foster fundamental understanding of QAC efficacy towards biofilm control, two of the highest QAC-resistant strains of bacteria were isolated from the papermaking processing water and employed as model organisms. By the 16S rRNA gene sequencing technique, two Gram-negative rods with QAC resistance were identified as Morganella morganii (HB22) and the biofilm-forming Pseudomonas putida (HB45). The minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) values were 8 mg L−1 for HB22 and 16 mg L−1 for HB45, respectively, against QAC in basal medium (BM). However, both strains could grow under more than 150 mg L−1 QAC in basal medium at neutral pH. As observed by crystal violet assay and fluorescent confocal microscopy, HB45 formed biofilm more slowly on stainless steel coupon which is the prime material of papermachine than on the surface of polystyrene, the most common material for food packaging and semi-finished/finished products. HB45 formed biofilm more slowly on stainless steel coupons than on polystyrene Petri dish surfaces, as observed by crystal violet assay and fluorescent confocal microscopy. For HB45, there was a marginal increase of inhibition of biofilm formation by increasing QAC concentration from 50 to 75 mg L−1. By comparison of inhibition concentration in liquid state and in biofilm formation, the results implicate that the current practice in papermaking processes of adding biocide to qualitatively control planktonic bacterial communities does not ensure control of biofilm formation.  相似文献

Aphidophagous ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) are attracted to and feed heavily on aphids, but many species will also feed opportunistically on other prey that they encounter. In potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in Washington State, USA, coccinellids feed on both green peach aphids (“GPA,” Myzus persicae Sulzer) and eggs of the Colorado potato beetle (“CPB,” Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say). The guild of aphidophagous ladybirds includes two native species, Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Coccinella transversoguttata Brown. Recently, an introduced species, Coccinella septempunctata L., has invaded and apparently displaced its native congener. A second exotic, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, has colonized the area and is becoming more abundant. We compared larval development of each species on a monotypic diet of GPA, a monotypic diet of CPB eggs, or a mixed diet of both GPA and CPB eggs. Our goal was to answer two questions: (1) do larvae of the four ladybird species benefit from including CPB eggs in their diet and (2) do the four ladybird species differ in their ability to utilize CPB eggs as prey? No larva of any species completed development on a pure diet of CPB eggs, and survivorship was highest for all species when they fed on a pure diet of GPA. One native species, H. convergens, and one exotic species, H. axyridis, exhibited significantly lower survivorship on a mixed diet of both CPB eggs and GPA, compared to a pure GPA diet; H. axyridis also took longer to develop from egg to adult when both prey were provided. Survivorship of the two Coccinella spp. was not altered by the inclusion of CPB eggs with GPA, although CPB eggs lengthened the development time of C. transversoguttata. Adult size was not consistently affected by diet for any of the coccinellids. Overall, no ladybird species benefited from the inclusion of potato beetle eggs in its diet. The two Coccinella species responded similarly to the inclusion of CPB eggs, and so we would not expect any difference in the success of coccinellid larval development in potato fields following the replacement of C. transversoguttata by C. septempunctata. Hippodamia convergens and H. axyridis, the two species whose survivorship was depressed by combining CPB egg and aphid prey, were also the two species that consumed the greatest number of CPB eggs during successful larval development. A comparison of total egg consumption by each species cohort suggested that displacement of the other species by H. axyridis would not alter CPB biological control, because the higher per capita feeding rate by H. axyridis larvae compensated for individuals’ greater mortality risk on a diet including CPB eggs.  相似文献

Two arthropod trace fossils are described and analysed from the Carboniferous Lower Westphalian (C. communis and basal A. modiolaris chronozones) coal-bearing strata of Lancashire. The biserial trackway Diplichnites triassicus consists of five overlapping en echelon sets of 7–9 tracks preserved as epichnia and hypichnia in lacustrine siltstones. The trackway suggests subaqueous in-phase walking by a multi-segmented producer with a body length of 35–40 mm, width 17–22 mm, and 7–9 appendages. Curved, clustered, or laterally repeated, hypichnial lobes with transverse striations on the base of ripple cross-laminated sandstone are identified as Rusophycus versans. This trace fossil is interpreted as shallow resting or furrowing burrows of a homopodous arthropod, 30–60 mm long, 15–30 mm wide, and probably the same kind of arthropod as produced D. triassicus.A review of contemporary arthropod body fossils from Lagerstätten in Lancashire favours the onisciform, or Arthropleura like arthropod Camptophyllia as a potential producer of both of these trace fossils in a lacustrine palaeoenvironment. This study integrates the analysis of sediments, trace fossils and body fossils for reconstructing the arthropod biota and ecology in Westphalian lacustrine and crevasse splay fluvial palaeoenvironments.  相似文献

Several culture conditions were examined for promoting efficient plant regeneration from explants of Gentiana. Adventitious shoot regeneration from leaf explants of cv. WSP-3 was very superior on MS medium, compared to B5 medium, supplemented with four cytokinins (TDZ, 4PU-30, BA and zeatin). An auxin / cytokinin combination was required for regeneration. TDZ was the most effective cytokinin, while NAA was more effective than IAA or 2,4-D. Optimum conditions for regeneration from explants (leaf, stem and root) of cv. WSP-3, evaluated in terms of regeneration frequency and number of regenerated shoots per explant, were TDZ and NAA in combination, 5–10 mg/l and 0.1 mg/l for leaf and stem explants, and 10 mg/l and 1 mg/l for root explants, respectively. Application of these conditions to eight other commercial cultivars resulted in 30–100% regeneration from leaf explants. The number of chromosomes in each of ten regenerated plants of each cultivar was diploid, 2n=26. Shoots regenerated in vitro were rooted in phytohormone-free medium and transferred to soil.Abbreviations MS medium Murashige and Skoog's medium (Murashige and Skoog 1962) - B5 medium Gamborg B5 medium (Gamborg et al. 1968) - BA 6-benzylaminopurine - TDZ N-phenyl-N'-1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl urea - 4PU-30 N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N'-phenylurea - 2,4-D 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - NAA 1-naphthaleneacetic acid  相似文献

The concurrent purification of the activator protein for sulphatide hydrolysis and for GM1-ganglioside hydrolysis including chromat ofocusing and hydrophobic chromatography stages is described. The purified preparation has a pl of 4.2 and the sub-unit Mr is 10 000. The stoichiometry of binding of sulphatide and ganglioside to the protein is very similar. Both activities are removed in similar proportions on binding to IgG purified from antisera raised against the activator protein. The probable identity of the activator protein for sulphatide hydrolysis with that for GM1-ganglioside hydrolysis and a molecular explanation for this identity are discussed.  相似文献

The duration of larval and pupal stages of two species of predatory flies was investigated at five constant temperatures. Ilione albiseta (Scopoli): Mean duration of first and second instars was shortest at 23°C and there was 100% survival of first instar larvae at all temperatures. Mean third instar larval duration decreased from 104 days at 17°C to 27.5 days at 26°C. Total percentage larval survival was greatest at 17°C and least at 26°C. Mean pupal duration decreased as temperature increased and this occurred also under outdoor conditions.Pherbellia cinerella (Fallén): As temperature increased mean larval duration decreased but the percentage of larvae pupating also decreased (100% at 14°C, 33.3% at 26°C). There was a trend for shorter mean pupal durations at higher temperatures.
