Most of the studies carried out in the past on economically important fish species rely on single species approach. Ecosystem dynamics are characterized by complex interaction among species, sharing common habitat needs and thus forming characteristic assemblages. The analysis of spatio-temporal variability of fish community, coupled to the analysis of spatial indices, provides a synthetic view of the fish community status evidencing, if any, the way a community changes. Such considerations drive also to the development of ecosystem-based fishery management paradigm. In the present study changes in pelagic fish community structure in an upwelling ecosystem of the central Mediterranean Sea during the last 10 years was analysed, by focusing the attention on the five most abundant small pelagic species: Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus, Sardinella aurita, Trachurus trachurus and Boops boops. Our results evidenced a quite stable community structure, characterized by spatial occupation strongly driven by ecosystem characteristics and modulated according to specie-specific behaviour. Obtained results lead us to hypothesize that the observed stability of community could be linked to the presence of different environments leading to efficient space partitioning and resources utilization among species.  相似文献

Changes of the quantitative and qualitative composition of ichthyoplankton off Mauritania (21–16° N) in different seasons of 1997–2008 are analyzed. In this area, pelagic eggs and larvae of over 120 fish species belonging to 71 families are recorded. In warm periods, the fish of the tropical fauna intensively spawn off Mauritania; round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African horse mackerel Trachurus trecae, and jack mackerel Caranx rhonchus are dominant. In cold periods, active spawning of fish belonging to the tropical fauna is recorded, the most abundant are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, European horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish species is calculated on the basis of the quantity of eggs laid by females. Environmental factors control fluctuations of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the considered region.  相似文献

Changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of ichthyoplankton off the coast of the Moroccan Sahara (21–28° N) in different seasons of 1994–2007 are analyzed. In this region, the pelagic eggs and larvae of over 100 fish species belonging to 62 families have been recorded. In cold periods, off the coast of the Moroccan Sahara there is peak in the spawning of fish of the subtropical fauna. The majority of them are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, common scad Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. In warm periods there is intensive spawning of fish of the tropical fauna. Among them, dominants are round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African scad Trachurus trecae, and Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish is calculated by the quantity of eggs laid by females. The environmental factors are indicated that influence the fluctuation of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the region under consideration.  相似文献

Length–weight and length–length relationships are described for 10 of the most important and most frequent small, middle‐size and large pelagic fish species from the Adriatic Sea, namely Sardina pilchardus Walbaum 1792, Sardinella aurita Valenciennes 1847, Sprattus sprattus Linnaeus 1758, Engraulis encrasicolus Linnaeus 1758, Belone belone Linnaeus 1761, Scomber scombrus Linnaeus 1758, Scomber japonicus Houttuyn 1780, Thunnus thynnus Linnaeus 1758, Auxis rochei Risso 1810 and Sarda sarda Bloch 1793. Length–length equations for converting size measurements: standard length (SL) and fork length (FL) to total length (TL) and vice versa, were linear.  相似文献

Changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of the ichthyoplankton off the coast of Northern Morocco (36–28° N) are analyzed in different seasons of 1994–2008. Pelagic eggs and larvae of over 80 fish species belonging to 57 families are recorded. In cold periods at the Morocco coast, there is maximum spawning of fish belonging to the subtropical (Mediterranean-Atlantic) fauna, the dominant of which are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, common scad Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. In warm periods, in addition to the aforementioned species, the ichthyopankton often comprises eggs and larvae of fish form the tropical fauna. Among the latter are round sardinella Sardinella aurita and West-African mackerel T. trecae dominate. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish is also calculated by the quantity of eggs laid by females.  相似文献

Feeding peculiarities of mass pelagic everyphagous fish Atlantic Chub mackerel Scomber colias, Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, Cunene horse mackerel Trachurus trecae from the Canary upwelling and the frontal zones of Mauritania were investigated. Atlantic Chub mackerel feeds mainly on fish inhabiting the zone of epipelagial, crustaceans and other organisms distributing in the sound scattering layers and also detritus and detritus–algal mixture. Cunene horse mackerel and Atlantic horse mackerel feed on mesopelagic fish and the organisms from the sound scattering layers. Feeding competition between these species does not occur due to non-concurrence of the places for concentration and nourishment. Correlation of food components, their occurrence and nourishment change for all species in conformity with fish sizes, physiological conditions and the season.  相似文献

The response of larval fish communities of the northeastern Aegean Sea (NEA) to interannual environmental changes is analyzed using data from four ichthyoplankton surveys covering the NEA continental shelf during June 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996. Waters were significantly cooler, less saline and richer in zooplankton in 1993 and 1996 (‘cold’ years) than in 1994 and 1995 (‘warm’ years). A comparison of monthly SST series (1993–1997) between the NEA, the Marmara Sea, and the Western Black Sea revealed high correlations and similar trend components among these areas implying that oceanographic conditions over the NEA (and observed inter-annual differences) were most likely dominated by the properties and relative amount of Black Sea water inflow in the NEA. The relative composition of the larval fish community was significantly related to the ‘cold/warm’ regime and larval diversity was higher during the warm years. Larvae of the small-sized pelagic species, such as anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), and most mesopelagic fishes were relatively more abundant during the cold, zooplankton-rich years. Larvae of the middle-sized pelagics (Sardinella aurita, Scomber japonicus, Trachurus mediterraneaus, Auxis rochei) and certain benthopelagic species exhibited an opposite trend, i.e., they were more abundant during the warm years or absent during the cold years. Most of these species are known to be typical summer spawners (e.g., Serranus cabrilla, Lisa saliens, Trachinus draco, and Symphurus nigrescens). Co-variation in larval fish production might be indicative of similar responses among species to changing physical and/or trophic regimes.  相似文献

The northward expansion of round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) in the Mediterranean Sea, together with declines and fluctuations in biomass and landings of European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) observed in recent decades, may suggest potential inter‐specific competition in the pelagic domain. The coexistence of sympatric zooplanktivorous fish species might therefore be exposed in part to trophic niche overlap and competition for food. Combining visual diet characterization under the microscope with DNA metabarcoding from stomach contents of fish collected in spring results show that predation on relatively large krill is equally important for sardinella than for the other two niche overlapping species. Furthermore, an important overlap is found in their isotopic niche, especially with anchovy, using nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) stable isotopes in muscle tissue. In fact, the three fish species are able to feed effectively in the whole prey size spectrum available during the sampled season, from the smallest diatoms and copepods to the larger prey (i.e., decapods and euphausiids), including fish larvae. Moreover, effective predation upon other large prey like siphonophores, which is observed only when multi‐proxy analyses in stomach contents are applied, might also be relevant in the diet of sardinella. The overlapping diet composition in spring, together with the effective use of food resource by sardinella, can be of special interest in potential future scenarios with warmer water temperature leading to lower zooplankton and/or higher jellyfish availability, where sardinella may take advantage over other species due to its feeding plasticity.  相似文献

Results of observations from the underwater inhabited device “Sever-2” of the behavior and distribution of fish on seamounts of the Azores region up to a depth of 1200 m are provided. In the natural habitat, 52 species of fish of 46 genera belonging to 36 families were recorded. In the ichthyofauna of the studied region, bottom (37.0%) and near-bottom (29.2%) species dominate; the proportion of off-bottom and off-bottom-pelagic species is 18.0 and 12.4%, respectively, and pelagic species account for only 3.4%. Pelagic species Scomber japonicus and Trachurus picturatus; off-bottom-pelagic Beryx splendens, Lepidopus caudatus, and Aphanopus carbo; and near-bottom species Zenopsis conchifer, Macrorhamphosus scolapax, Antigonia capros, Capros aper, Anthias anthias, and Callanthias ruber dominate by numbers and the amount of biomass.  相似文献

Landmark‐based geometric morphometric analysis revealed differences in scale shape between European sardine Sardina pilchardus and round sardinella Sardinella aurita as well as among the local populations of each species. Fish scale measurements from four different areas in the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea showed that the mean scale shape of the two species using landmark data could be differentiated with high certainty. Populations of S. aurita from the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea could be separated reliably (P < 0·001) with an average discrimination rate of 91%, whereas the average discrimination of the S. pilchardus populations was lower (80%), albeit still high.  相似文献

To establish if fishes’ consumption of jellyfish changes through the year, we conducted a molecular gut-content assessment on opportunistically sampled species from the Celtic Sea in October and compared these with samples previously collected in February and March from the Irish Sea. Mackerel Scomber scombrus were found to feed on hydrozoan jellyfish relatively frequently in autumn, with rare consumption also detected in sardine Sardina pilchardus and sprat Sprattus sprattus. By October, moon jellyfish Aurelia aurita appeared to have escaped predation, potentially through somatic growth and the development of stinging tentacles. This is in contrast with sampling in February and March where A. aurita ephyrae were heavily preyed upon. No significant change in predation rate was observed in S. sprattus, but jellyfish predation by S. scombrus feeding in autumn was significantly higher than that seen during winter. This increase in consumption appears to be driven by the consumption of different, smaller jellyfish species than were targeted during the winter.  相似文献

Consumption of raw or thermally inadequately treated fishery products represents a public health risk, with the possibility of propagation of live Anisakis larvae, the causative agent of the zoonotic disease anisakidosis, or anisakiasis. We investigated the population dynamics of Anisakis spp. in commercially important fish—anchovies (Anisakis), sardines (Sardina pilchardus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius), whiting (Merlangius merlangus), chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus), and Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)—captured in the main Adriatic Sea fishing ground. We observed a significant difference in the numbers of parasite larvae (1 to 32) in individual hosts and between species, with most fish showing high or very high Anisakis population indices. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that commercial fish in the Adriatic Sea are parasitized by Anisakis pegreffii (95.95%) and Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (4.05%). The genetic structure of A. pegreffii in demersal, pelagic, and top predator hosts was unstructured, and the highest frequency of haplotype sharing (n = 10) was between demersal and pelagic fish.  相似文献

Changes in the quantitative composition of mass fish species at early stages of ontogenesis in different areas of the Central-Eastern Atlantic (CEA) in warm and cold seasons in 1994–2008 were analyzed in the paper. The most widespread representatives of ichthyocenosis of CEA were: European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus), common scad (Trachurus trachurus), round sardinella (Sardinella aurita), and West-African scad (Trachrus trecae). The data obtained indicate that, within the economic zone of Morocco, fluctuations of numbers at early stages of development in European pilchard and common scad are close over the entire water area under consideration (36°–21° N). The regularities of fluctuations of the numbers of ichthyoplankton are similar to the interannual changes in the biomass of fish in the area of Morocco. In the area of Mauritania (21°–16° N), fluctuations of numbers of the early stages of development of commercial fish cannot be unambiguously correlated with changes in the biomass of adult fish. It is known that, in the economic zone of Mauritania, there are Senegal-Mauritanian populations of round sardinella and West-African scad that inhabit waters of different states and are not completely assessed by our surveys. Therefore, no obvious relation was observed between the considered data.  相似文献

Feeding peculiarities of mass pelagic ichtyophagous fish from the Canary upwelling waters and frontal zones of Mauritania have been investigated: vadigo Campogramma glaycos, false scad Caranx rhonchus, bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix, Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda, West African Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus tritor, large-eyed hairtail Trichiurus lepturus and pompano Trachinotus ovatus. These species feed on epipelagic fish living or forming temporary agglomerations at the depths up to 200–250 m from the surface.  相似文献

A number of scientific papers in the last few years singled out the influence of environmental conditions on the spatial distribution of fish species, highlighting the need for the fisheries scientific community to investigate, besides biomass estimates, also the habitat selection of commercially important fish species. The Mediterranean Sea, although generally oligotrophic, is characterized by high habitat variability and represents an ideal study area to investigate the adaptive behavior of small pelagics under different environmental conditions. In this study the habitat selection of European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and European sardine Sardina pilchardus is analyzed in two areas of the Mediterranean Sea that largely differentiate in terms of environmental regimes: the Strait of Sicily and the North Aegean Sea. A number of environmental parameters were used to investigate factors influencing anchovy and sardine habitat selection. Acoustic surveys data, collected during the summer period 2002–2010, were used for this purpose. The quotient analysis was used to identify the association between high density values and environmental variables; it was applied to the entire dataset in each area in order to identify similarities or differences in the “mean” spatial behavioral pattern for each species. Principal component analysis was applied to selected environmental variables in order to identify those environmental regimes which drive each of the two ecosystems. The analysis revealed the effect of food availability along with bottom depth selection on the spatial distribution of both species. Furthermore PCA results highlighted that observed selectivity for shallower waters is mainly associated to specific environmental processes that locally increase productivity. The common trends in habitat selection of the two species, as observed in the two regions although they present marked differences in hydrodynamics, seem to be driven by the oligotrophic character of the study areas, highlighting the role of areas where the local environmental regimes meet ‘the ocean triad hypothesis’.  相似文献

Among the different techniques applied in a holistic approach for fish stock identification, the use of parasites as "biological tags" is becoming increasingly important. In this presentation, our recent studies on the use of some parasite species, identified by genetic markers, and the parasite/fauna composition, in stock identification of demersal (Merluccius merluccius), small pelagic (Trachurus trachurus), and large pelagic fish species (Xiphias gladius) are reviewed. Different species of Anisakis and Hysterothylacium were genetically identified by the application of genetic (allozyme) markers. Statistically significant differences in the spatial distribution of distinct species of Anisakis were found in the fish considered. As to the species of Hysterothylacium genetically detected, different relative proportions were detected in several Mediterranean and Atlantic samples of swordfish (X. gladius). This study demonstrates the potential value of these anisakid nematodes, at both larval and adult stages, as "biological tags" for these fish species in European waters.  相似文献

The survival of early stages of small pelagic fish species (e.g. Engraulis encrasicolus) is highly dependent on environmental conditions in both spawning and nursery areas. Knowing the relationship between the mortality rates of the early stages and the environment may help to study and model recruitment fluctuations. During the summer of 2006, two consecutive oceanographic cruises were carried out in the Central Mediterranean sea (CMED) in two different areas: the western Libyan waters and the Sicilian?CMaltese waters. For the first time a nearly synoptic comparison between the two border areas of the CMED is performed. In spite of a higher overall egg density in the Sicilian?CMaltese waters, there was a higher density of anchovy larvae in Libyan waters. The comparison between the oceanographic datasets singled out different circulation patterns and different characteristics of water masses, which helped to explain the differences in density of the spawning products in the two areas. A Lagrangian transport model was used to evaluate the effects of major oceanographic features on offshore egg and larval transport. The results of the model simulations and the nutritional conditions, as indicated by lipid, carbohydrate and protein contents, support the hypothesis that the western Libyan waters may represent a more favourable nursery ground compared to the Sicilian?CMaltese waters in terms of environmental conditions and food availability.  相似文献

The study presents the biomass and spatial distribution of Sardinella aurita in the Libyan, Maltese and southern Sicily waters, estimated during four acoustic surveys in summer 2008 and 2010. Strong differences in terms of both spatial distribution and total biomass between years and areas were found, with higher total biomass in 2010 than in 2008 in both southern and northern areas of the central Mediterranean. Habitat suitability and changes in the spatial dynamics of round sardinella among areas and years are then explored in relation to total biomass variation and environmental factors. The area of presence of S. aurita increased in the Maltese and Sicilian waters in 2010 with respect to 2008, while most of the total biomass observed in the two years occupied the same proportion of the continental shelf in Libyan waters. The link between environmental conditions and S. aurita area of presence and aggregation was investigated by means of generalized additive models (GAM). The application of GAM singled out the key role of depth and temperature in driving higher round sardinella aggregations, as they were able to explain in both years about the 48% of total deviance in the case of strictly positive values. Favourable habitat for round sardinella was found in waters shallower than 60 m depths, with a clear peak around 40 m depth. Favourable temperature values were above 22°C for presence/absence case and above 24°C when GAM was applied on strictly positive values. Overall S. aurita biomass and distribution were discussed in the light of the classical models proposed to describe the fish spatial dynamics in relation to an increase in total biomass.  相似文献
