The presence of adult male Corynopoma riisei was found to inhibit the maturation of juvenile males. Males in a conspecific community tank took longer to mature and did so at increasingly slower rates compared to isolated controls, providing a positive correlation between size and time of maturational onset. The inhibitory effect increased with greater numbers of adult males. The first males to mature did so at accelerated rates, suggesting positive as well as negative control. Tanks in which adult males were removed as soon as maturation was complete showed an intermediate pattern, with no lengthening of the maturational time course but an increase in standard length. Histological examination revealed immature males with lengths greater than the control range; these appear to represent inhibited animals. Both the testes and pituitary gonadotropic zone of these males appeared undeveloped, arguing for inhibition at least at the hypothalamic level. This phenomenon has also been described in poeciliids The presence of a similar complex mechanism in two distant groups of fishes suggests convergent evolution. It also suggests that this phenomenon may be physiologically possible for a wide range of fish species.  相似文献

The sensory exploitation hypothesis states that pre-existing biases in female sensory systems may generate strong selection on male signals to match such biases. As environmental conditions differ between populations, sexual preferences resulting from natural selection are expected to vary as well. The swordtail characin (Corynopoma riisei) is a species in which males carry a flag-like ornament growing from the operculum that has been proposed to function as a prey mimic to attract females. Here, we investigated if female plasticity in feeding preferences is associated with plasticity in preference for an artificial male ornament in this species. Females were trained for 10 days by offering them differently coloured food items and were then tested for changes in preferences for differently coloured artificial male ornaments according to foraging experience. We found a rapid and pronounced change in female preference for the colouration of the artificial ornament according to food training. Thus our results support the possibility that sensory exploitation may act as a driving force for female preferences for male ornaments in this species.  相似文献

Sensory drive, where the efficacy of a sexual signal depends on the environment in which it is employed, is a potential mechanism behind divergent evolution of secondary sexual traits. Male swordtail characins are equipped with a narrow and transparent extension of the gill cover with a flag‐like structure at its tip. This opercular flag mimics a prey item and is employed by males as a ‘lure’ to attract the attention of females during mating attempts. We conducted a study of genetic and morphological differentiation across swordtail characin populations throughout their native range in Trinidad. The morphology of the opercular flag varied across populations and several aspects of this variation match the predicted hallmarks of sensory drive. First, morphological differentiation of the flag across populations was unrelated to genetic similarity at neutral genetic markers. Second, the shape of the flag covaried with those aspects of body shape that should reflect adaptation to different feeding regimes. Third, and most importantly, the shape of the flag covaried across populations with those environmental characteristics that should most closely reflect differences in local prey abundance. Overall, our results are consistent with a scenario where the evolution of this male sexual signal tracks food‐related shifts in female sensory biases across populations, thus providing at least provisional support for a role for sensory drive in population differentiation.  相似文献

Pheromones constitute an important cue used by both males and females during courtship. Here, we investigate the effect of male pheromones on female behaviour in the swordtail characin (Corynopoma riisei), a species of fish where males have a caudal pheromone gland which has been suggested to affect female behaviour during courtship. We subjected female C. riisei to male courtship pheromones and investigated the effect on both female behaviour and brain serotonergic activity levels compared to a control group. While no difference in serotonergic activity was found, the pheromone‐treated females showed lower stress levels compared to the control group. Furthermore, pheromone‐treated females increased locomotor activity over time, while a decrease in locomotor activity was observed in the control group. These results suggest that the male courtship pheromones may serve to reduce female stress and increase female activity, possibly to aid males in gaining access to females and facilitating sperm transfer.  相似文献

Males of the South American freshwater fish, Corynopoma riisei , have glandular masses on the caudal peduncle and fin which are partly enclosed by a scale-covered pouch. Histo-chemical examination reveals an extensive layer of large secretory cells superficial to the dermis appearing similar in form to typical mucous cells. PAS and Alcian blue staining indicate all cells produce muco- and/or glycoproteins and that a few cells are also synthesizing mucopolysaccharides. This secretion probably acts as a pheromone during courtship to stimulate or release female sexual response.  相似文献

The plasma membrane of spermatogenic cells of the teleost Xiphophorus helleri was examined ultrastructurally and cytochemically in order to characterize the temporal development of the membrane specializations characteristic of the mature spermatozoon. Mature sperm display a mosaic distribution of Concanavalin A and Ricinus comrnunis I binding sites; the anterior region of the head displays an intense binding that is not seen in other surface regions. This asymmetric binding is evident in early spermatids and the area of lectin binding appears associated with the plasma membrane overlying the nucleus. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the plasma membrane over the anterior region of the head is characterized by an ordered glycocalyx and a tight adherence to the underlying nucleus. Additional membrane differentiations were revealed both in the midpiece region where a “submitochondrial net” is attached to the plasma membrane and at the base of the axoneme where the plasma membrane possesses a “collar-like” arrangement of circumferential rings. The possible functions of these differentiations, as well as their correlation to differentiations seen in sperm of other animal groups, are discussed.  相似文献

Throughout its native North Pacific, the chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), exists as twolife-history types that aredistinguished by the age at which juvenile salmon migrate to sea as smolts. 'Stream-type' chinook migrate seaward after I or more years of feeding in fresh water, whereas 'ocean-type' fish migrate to sea as newly emerged fry or after 2–3 months in fresh water. Stream-type chinook predominate in populations distant from the sea south of 56° N, and in both inland and coastal populations north of this point. By contrast, ocean-type chinook predominate in coastal populations south of 56° N, but are rare in populations in more northerly latitudes. Stream-type populations are associated with areas of low 'growth opportunity' (as measured by temperature and photoperiod regimes) and/or areas distant from the sea compared to ocean-type. Geographic variability in juvenile life history is suggested to result, in part, from environmental modulation of smolting timing via differences in growth opportunity among geo-graphic areas. In addition, differences in migration distance and temperature regime may result in selection for different sizes at migration among populations which, through differences in growth opportunity, might promote geographic variability in age at seaward migration.  相似文献

Soft corals show a wide variety of reproductive strategies, including both asexual and sexual reproduction which can influence macro-evolutionary processes. The octocoral Carijoa riisei has an ample geographical distribution in Pacific and southern Atlantic and also in Caribbean region. This species was considered invasive in Hawaii, and its capacity for rapid proliferation is recognized, but recent studies, however, have indicated that it appears to be native to the Indo-Pacific region. The present study examined the reproductive biology of C. riisei in the Atlantic basin. The results were then compared to previous studies of the same species from the Pacific (Hawaii) and Caribbean (Puerto Rico) regions to examine the hypothesis that the reproductive patterns of C. riisei populations are the same throughout its geographical distribution, independent of its native or non-native status. Samples were collected on a monthly basis from May/2007 to April/2008 at Porto de Galinhas (Pernambuco State, Brazil). This species was found to have similar reproduction patterns in Brazil, the Caribbean, and in Hawaii (a gonochoric reproductive pattern and continuous and asynchronous gamete release). The similarities of their traits contribute to its rapid proliferation and occupation of spaces left by other species, independent of its native or non-native status.  相似文献

Swordtail fish have been studied extensively in relation to diverse aspects of biology; however, little attention has been paid to the patterns of genetic variation within and among populations of swordtails. In this study, we sequenced the mtDNA control region from 65 individuals and 10 populations of Xiphophorus cortezi to investigate the genetic variation within and among populations, including tests for correlations between genetic and geographic distances and tests for species monophyly. We found low gene and nucleotide diversity within populations and high degrees of genetic differentiation among populations. Significant and positive correlations between genetic distance and both river and straight-line geographic distance indicate that genetic differentiation among X. cortezi populations can be explained, to some extent, by an isolation-by-distance model and provide evidence of stream capture. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that X. cortezi is paraphyletic relative to X. malinche, raising questions concerning the status of these taxa as separate species.  相似文献

We used sequences of the mitochondria control region to assess the distribution of genetic variation within and among populations of the poeciliid fish species Xiphophorus birchmanni . We collected 122 X. birchmanni samples from 11 sites in three drainage systems comprising the distribution of the species. We found low levels of polymorphism among aligned sequences and low levels of genetic variation within populations but high levels of genetic differentiation among populations. Haplotypes are exclusive to three river drainages (Los Hules, Calabozo and San Pedro). Mantel tests revealed correlations between geographical (both straight-line and river distances) and genetic distance, consistent with an isolation by distance scenario, while nested clade analysis suggested allopatric fragmentation between haplotypes from two of the major drainages, and isolation by distance with restricted gene flow within those drainages. Finally, monophyly of X. birchmanni is strongly supported while the previous hypothesis of the evolutionary origin of this species from X. malinche is not.  相似文献

General studies cover the habitat and life cycle of a migratory population of Prochilodus platensis . Specific studies of this species involved the elucidation and evaluation of abiotic effects on local upstream migrations and preliminary age and growth estimations. Upstream movements appeared to be affected by water temperature and moon phase. Most of the fish moved upstream when the temperature was between about 14 and 18°C at the particular monitoring point. Catches of ascending fish were highest during the full moon quarter, less during the waxing phase and least during the waning and new moon quarters. Length frequency and scale check data allowed approximate, indirect estimations to be made of the modal lengths attained in each of the first five age-groups.  相似文献

Biological diversity is distributed across the planet in non-random, organised ways. At the species level, numerous environmental variables have been proposed to explain this non-random distribution with available energy and habitat heterogeneity receiving the most empirical support. With regard to genetic organisation, environmental stress and habitat heterogeneity have been widely supported. However, few studies have addressed if these two scales of biological organisation are structured via similar processes. Here, we tested whether or not the distributional organisation of genetic and species richness were driven by similar environmental variables for salamanders of the family Plethodontidae across North America. In general, we found that those environmental variables related to energy, particularly energy made accessible to salamanders via the actions of available moisture, were the primary determinants of both genetic and species richness. This finding is consistent with both the “more individuals hypothesis” of species richness and neutral-theory expectations for genetic richness. Additionally, greater habitat heterogeneity, as measured by increased topographic variance, was of secondary importance in positively influencing species richness, although its effects on genetic richness were far more variable. In total, our results suggest that both of these scales of biological organisation are influenced by similar environmental variables, even though increased genetic richness at the population-level does not always translate into greater species richness.  相似文献

Polypterids are unusual among ray‐finned fishes in possessing only four rather than five gill arches. We review the two current hypotheses regarding the homology of the last gill arch in polypterids: that it represents (1) the fifth or (2) the fourth arch of other actinopterygians. Arguments for the alternative hypotheses drawn from different anatomical systems are compiled and evaluated. The spatial and temporal structure of Carabus (Nesaeocarabus) interruptus Dejean, 1831 populations and the independent effects of climate along altitudinal gradients in the island of Tenerife, especially whether environmental preferences constrains the species breeding patterns at local and regional scales were evaluated. Ground-beetles were sampled with twenty-one pitfall traps in each of the forty-one plots during one year study. Some sampled specimens were dissected and dried to determine sex, weight and ovarian maturation. The populations were restricted to the middle climatic zone (600–1700 m). There was a long adult activity period from October to June and the changes in the weekly capture success were strongly correlated with the rainfall and temperature. Overall the males during winter were more active than the females. The emergence of new adults occurred only in spring and the body dry weight peaked in April–May. From start of autumn the weight was recovered to the initial values of the cycle, increased and peaked in January. The females prolonged its oviposition period from mid-autumn to the starting of spring. The species showed a winter breeding pattern and the seasonal variations in multiple life history traits could correspond with the changing conditions of the microclimatic variables. An evolutionary ecological model could help explain the life history pattern variability among the Carabus species in South-western Europe. The species could tackle the geographic dispersion of their populations for the single purpose of seeking a suitable hydrothermal environment (high rainfall and mild temperatures) if the food was insured.  相似文献

We examined environmental correlates of activity in the Freckled Nightjar (Caprimulgus tristigma), a nocturnal aerial insectivore that is resident year-round in the colder and drier parts of southern Africa. Specifically, we tested the prediction that air temperature (T a), in addition to light availability, is a significant correlate of Freckled Nightjar activity. We found that aerial insect density varied by over three orders of magnitude (from <1.0 to 117.1 insects 1,000 m−3) during the course of the study, and was strongly and positively related to T a. Nightjar activity was also significantly temperature-dependent, with a cessation of activity at T a < 12°C. Consistent with previous studies, we found that activity levels were strongly related to ambient light, with markedly reduced activity levels on dark nights. The average number of Freckled Nightjars encountered per 14.6-km transect was 1.95 ± 2.44 nightjars transect−1 during nights near full moon, but only 0.17 ± 0.61 nightjars transect−1 around new moon. Our study reveals that caprimulgid activity can be significantly influenced by temperature as well as ambient light.  相似文献

Summary A light and electron microscopic study was made of the structure of the gill arch, filament and secondary lamella of Salmo gairdneri R. Blood pathways through the gill were traced from serial histological sections, and from the examination of ink perfused tissue and perspex casts formed following resin injection of the circulatory system.The epithelium covering the gill consists of unspecialized, dark, chloride and mucous cells. The distribution of specialized cells appears to be related to gill function. The basement membrane underlying the epithelium consists of three layers, the inner collagen layer being continuous with the connective tissue core of the gills.Blood supply to the secondary lamellar respiratory surface is via branchial, filament and secondary lamellar arteries. Blood spaces of the secondary lamellae are delimited by pillar cells containing what appears to be contractile material. The marginal channel of each lamella is bounded distally by cells of endothelial origin. A network of lymph spaces within the filaments connects with efferent branchial arteries. Nutritionary capillaries within the filaments connect with afferent branchial arteries. No shunts between afferent and efferent filament arteries were found.Data from this study and previous physiological and histopathological studies suggest a mechanism for the control of blood flow to suit the respiratory requirements of the fish. This mechanism involves a system of recruitment of additional respiratory units and changes in overall blood flow patterns.This work formed part of a thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1971 and for which M. Normal gill structure and thyroxine induced resorptive changes were studied in Ambystoma mexicanum. The gill is normally composed of a mesenchymal core covered with a multilayered epithelium. The general architecture is simpler than that of the teleost and elasmobranch, but the vascular arrangement is analogous. There are three basic cell types in the epithelium: a characteristic epithelial cell containing tonofibrils and mucus, a ciliated cell with an ultrastructure similar to that of the chloride cell, and the mucin-filled Leydig cell. The basal lamella and mesenchymal tissue appear typical of amphibians. Cytologic changes during thyroxine induced gill resorption varied with cell type. Some epithelial cells demonstrated a cytoplasmic response with swelling of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum and late, lytic nuclear changes, while others remained viable and went on to cornify. Ciliated cells showed early changes in nuclear chromatin pattern followed by rapid, progressive dilatation of endoplasmic reticulum. Leydig cells sustained variable changes leading to collapse of the perinuclear mucus, and cells of this type were absent in mature epidermis. Early basement membrane changes included widening and reduplication of the adepidermal membrane followed by morphologic fraying of collagen plies. There is no cytologic evidence to suggest that autolysis plays a major role in gill tissue dissolution. Resorption involved the maintenance of structural integrity in the face of diminishing physical dimensions. The epithelium became cornified, the basement lamellae dissolved, and the mesenchymal tissue was resorbed through action of macrophages in an orderly distal to proximal direction.  相似文献

Our knowledge about environmental correlates of the spatial distribution of animal species stems mostly from the study of well known vertebrate and a few invertebrate taxa. The poor spatial resolution of faunistic data and undersampling prohibit detailed spatial modeling for the vast majority of arthropods. However, many such models are necessary for a comparative approach to the impact of environmental factors on the spatial distribution of species of different taxa. Here we use recent compilations of species richness of 35 European countries and larger islands and linear spatial autocorrelation modeling to infer the influence of area and environmental variables on the number of springtail (Collembola) species in Europe. We show that area, winter length and annual temperature difference are major predictors of species richness. We also detected a significant negative longitudinal gradient in the number of springtail species towards Eastern Europe that might be caused by postglacial colonization. In turn, environmental heterogeneity and vascular plant species richness did not significantly contribute to model performance. Contrary to theoretical expectations, climate and longitude corrected species–area relationships of Collembola did not significantly differ between islands and mainlands.  相似文献
