Improvements in water quality in the Thames Estuary since the 1960s have removed a barrier to fish migration into the Thames catchment. The extent of recolonization by the eel is examined, using data from 235 electrofished and fyke-netted sites, compared with information on pre-pollution distribution. Density is highest in the lower parts of the catchment and decreases significantly with increasing distance from the tidal limit. Only sparse populations are found beyond 50 km from the tidal limit and are characterized by an increasing bias towards larger, slower-growing females. Artificial stocking is believed to be a significant factor in certain areas. The rate of recolonization has been slow and neither the annual natural recruitment nor distribution of the pre-pollution stock of the 1800s appears to have been achieved. The future management of the stock in relation to its commercial scientific and conservation value is considered.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) is distributed in coastal and inland habitats all over Europe, but spawns in the Sargasso Sea and is thus affected by both continental and oceanic factors. Since the 1980s a steady decline has been observed in the recruitment of glass eels to freshwater and in total eel landings. The eel is considered as critically endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List of species. The Skagerrak beach seine survey from Norway constitutes the longest fishery-independent dataset on yellow/silver eels (starting in 1904). The Skagerrak coastal region receives larvae born in the Sargasso Sea spawning areas that have followed the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Drift before they penetrate far into the North Sea. The Skagerrak coastal time series is therefore particularly valuable for exploring the impacts of oceanic factors on fluctuations in eel recruitment abundance. Analyses showed that Sargasso Sea surface temperature was negatively correlated with eel abundance, with a lag of 12 years revealing a cyclic and detrimental effect of high temperatures on the newly hatched larvae. The North Atlantic Oscillation index and inflow of North Atlantic water into the North Sea were negatively correlated with eel abundance, with a lag of 11 years. Increased currents towards the North Atlantic during high North Atlantic Oscillation years may send larvae into the subpolar gyre before they are ready to metamorphose and settle, resulting in low recruitment in the northern part of the distribution area for these years. The Skagerrak time series was compared with glass eel recruitment to freshwater in the Netherlands (Den Oever glass eel time series), and similar patterns were found revealing a cycle linked to changes in oceanic factors affecting glass eel recruitment. The recent decline of eels in the Skagerrak also coincided with previously documented shifts in environmental conditions of the North Sea ecosystem.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has undergone an unprecedented population decline since the 1980s, with current recruitment levels fluctuating from 3 to 15% of historical levels for the last 20 years. Monitoring of glass eels and elvers as 0?+?recruitment is an essential step in helping to understand the trend in recruitment and to better quantify the current recruitment time series. Two locations within the Shannon estuary on the west coast of Ireland were monitored for glass eel recruitment from January to April in 2017 and 2018. This study used a generalised linear mixed model to examine a range of environmental variables impacting on glass eel abundance in transitional waters. Results found that water temperature and moon phase were the most important variables. Tidal height and cloud cover also influenced the abundance of glass eels but to a lesser extent. This study found that focussing survey efforts on nights around the full moon when water temperatures exceed 5℃ will allow a catch which is representative of the population in an estuary. Glass eel monitoring needs a long-term sampling plan in order to account for annual fluctuations apparent in glass eel recruitment.

Changes in abundance indicators and the mean size of American eel (Anguilla rostrata LeSueur) in the lower St. Lawrence River (SLR) over the past 40 years were assessed to determine the chronology of the species decline and the possible effect of hydroclimatic factors on that trend. Daily catches at commercial weirs and at an experimental fishery were used to model the long-term trend in silver eel availability. Eel landings started declining in the mid-1980s; whereas the modelled catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) index shows a monotonic declining trend since the late 1960s. Landings and CPUEs were not strongly correlated, and landings cannot be a valid proxy for silver eel abundance in the SLR. Variations in summer river discharge contributed to interannual fluctuations in CPUE by affecting eel availability to the fishing gears. No relationship was found between CPUE and the North Atlantic Oscillation index of climatic variability. Correlations between hydroclimatic variables lagged by 1–20 years and CPUE indices revealed no measurable effect of riverine hydroclimatic variability on eel recruitment. The average size of silver eels increased by 30% between 1997 and 2007, as a result of poor recruitment during the mid-1980s. Since the onset of the silver eel decline preceded the major decline in recruitment in the mid-1980s, we suggest that the decline in spawning stock size was not due to poor recruitment but rather to large-scale mortality factors associated with high exploitation in upstream Lake Ontario and to construction of hydropower dams in the late 1950s.  相似文献

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla, L.) was historically widely distributed throughout the United Kingdom, in coastal waters, lakes, rivers and wetlands. Recruitment has declined in recent decades and the species is now listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List. Management of suitable wetland habitats may contribute to species recovery; however, little is known about the stocks in these areas. In this study, yellow (adult stage?>?300 mm) eels were sampled in ditches in five marshes bordering the Thames Estuary in England, UK. Ecological variables, including ditch characteristics, invertebrate abundance and water quality parameters were measured. Habitat features were also observed and recorded, including access, land use and water management regimes. Eels were found in all marshes, but at varying catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE). There were no significant correlations between CPUE and the ecological variables, except ditch width. However, a significant difference in CPUE was found between two of the marshes, which may be explained by variations in local habitat management. Mean lengths showed a high proportion of females and mean body condition of four of the marshes was also found to be greater than in three rivers in the same region. These findings suggest that the marshes are potentially favourable eel habitats and that factors influencing habitat quality, such as land use and water management, may affect eel abundance, production of females and body condition. Effective management of such wetlands may therefore contribute to the conservation of European eel.  相似文献

A decline in abundance towards a species' range boundary is often interpreted as evidence of a decline in individual success, and is usually assumed to reflect a decline in suitable environmental conditions. Gradual declines towards high latitude range boundaries are frequently attributed to limitations on organismal tolerance of cold temperature. Rarely have these two assumptions been empirically tested. The intertidal gastropod Collisella scabra declines monotonically in abundance from 435 to <1 m?2 over the northern 300 km of its geographic distribution. I examined temperature, adult performance (survival, growth, reproduction), and recruitment at five locations in this region of decline. Mortality ranged from 4.9 to 11.2% per month, but was highest at the lowest latitude study site. Growth rates ranged from 0 to 5.2 mm yr?1, but were generally lower at lower latitude sites. Gonad development was high in the three populations examined, but the possibility of infrequent spawning at high latitude sites could not be excluded. Finally, a comparison of performance differences among populations with temperature revealed clear effects of temperature on both growth and mortality; however, the patterns were not consistent with a hypothesis of cold stress at the range boundary. Overall there was little evidence for either reduced performance or increasing cold stress in low density high latitude populations. Over the same 300 km, recruitment declined monotonically from a mean of six recruits per 625 cm2 to less than one; suggesting that limitations on recruitment, rather that adult performance, are responsible for low abundance in marginal populations. Several hypotheses for the decline in recruitment are discussed in the paper and the most likely explanation appears to be an increase in the distance between populations at the range margin, reducing the chances that dispersing larvae find suitable habitat for settlement.  相似文献

The timing of Anguilla spp. glass eel recruitment into the Waikato River, North Island, New Zealand, was studied over a 2 year period (2004–2005). While glass eels of both the shortfin eel Anguilla australis and the endemic longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii were caught, the former comprised >97% of the species composition. There was a positive correlation of glass eel migrations with spring tides, with peak migration periods typically occurring within a few hours of the peak of high tide, and between 2 and 4 days after the day of spring tide. Both water temperature and discharge had significant inverse relationships with glass eel catches, with temperature explaining >30% of the variance in catch periodicity. Comparison of catch data 30 years apart showed that main migration periods appear to occur several weeks earlier today than previously. Reduced catch per unit effort and duration of runs from recent years' sampling (compared with the 1970s) indicate that a reduction in recruitment may also have occurred during this period, something recorded in other temperate species of Anguilla .  相似文献

Identifying the factors influencing the settlement of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) juveniles in continental habitats is crucial to designing effective management and conservation measures for this endangered species. A long-term data series (1993–2008) of European eel and European catfish (Silurus glanis) abundance in a freshwater canal of the Camargue water system (southern France), along with parallel data on water salinity and glass eel abundance in the adjacent Vaccarès lagoon, was analysed to identify the possible causes of decline in eel abundance observed in the canal during the last two decades. A model including glass eel recruitment and catfish abundance as covariates explained 78% of the observed variation in eel settlement success. Results suggest that (1) salinity does not play a significant role in determining the fraction of eels moving from the brackish lagoon to the canal; (2) density dependence affects settlement success, possibly through a reduction of juvenile survival in the adjacent lagoon; and (3) catfish abundance is negatively correlated with eel settlement. We discuss this latter point in terms of possible predation of catfish upon eels and/or inter-specific competition between the two species.  相似文献

Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), a native species in China, has populated Continental Europe and North America since 1912. In this paper, the nucleotide variation in the fragments of mitochondrial COII (693 bp), Cytb (766 bp), and nucleotide ITS (706 bp) was analyzed in native (Yantgze, Yellow, and Liaohe Rivers in China) and colonized (Elbe, Rhine, and Thames Rivers in Europe, and San Francisco Bay in North America) populations of the Chinese mitten crab. The major findings are as follows. First, the genetic variability in the native populations is higher than that in the colonized European and North American populations, with the exception of the Elbe River population, which possesses a similar level of variability with the native populations. Second, a remarkable loss of singletons has been associated with the colonization of Chinese mitten crabs. Third, the AMOVA and F ST results demonstrate that there are no significant genetic differentiations among the populations from the three continents, but there is a significant differentiation between pairwise populations within and among continents. Fourth, it is found that expansion-drift and gene flow pattern are involved in the European populations. The neutrality test and R 2 statistics suggest that a moderate founder population exists in the colonized populations, and only the Yangtze River population has undergone a recent population expansion. Finally, the results demonstrate that the European populations originate from multiple rivers in China on multiple occasions. The San Francisco population originates from both the native Chinese populations and the colonized European populations, most likely the Thames population.  相似文献

The global European eel (Anguilla anguilla) stock is critically endangered according to the IUCN, and the European Commission has urged the development of conservation plans aimed to ensure its viability. However, the complex life cycle of this panmictic species, which reproduces in the open ocean but spends most of its prereproductive life in continental waters (thus embracing a huge geographic range and a variety of habitat types), makes it difficult to assess the long‐term effectiveness of conservation measures. The interplay between local and global stressors raises intriguing cross‐scale conservation challenges that require a comprehensive modelling approach to be addressed. We developed a full life cycle model of the global European eel stock, encompassing both the oceanic and the continental phases of eel's life, and explicitly allowing for spatial heterogeneity in vital rates, availability of suitable habitat and settlement potential via a metapopulation approach. We calibrated the model against a long‐term time series of global European eel catches and used it to hindcast the dynamics of the stock in the past and project it over the 21st century under different management scenarios. Although our analysis relies on a number of inevitable simplifying assumptions and on data that may not embrace the whole range of variation in population dynamics at the small spatiotemporal scale, our hindcast is consistent with the general pattern of decline of the stock over recent decades. The results of our projections suggest that (i) habitat loss played a major role in the European eel decline; (ii) the viability of the global stock is at risk if appropriate protection measures are not implemented; (iii) the recovery of spawner escapement requires that fishing mortality is significantly reduced; and (iv) the recovery of recruitment might not be feasible if reproductive output is not enhanced.  相似文献

The stock of the European eel is considered to be outside safe biological limits, following a dramatic demographic decline in recent decades (90–99% drop) that involves a large number of factors including overfishing, contaminants and environmental fluctuations. The aim of the present study is to estimate the effective population size of the European eel and the possible existence of a genetic bottleneck, which is expected during or after a severe demographic crash. Using a panel of 22 EST-derived microsatellite loci, we found no evidence for a genetic bottleneck in the European eel as our data showed moderate to high levels of genetic diversity, no loss of allele size range or rare alleles, and a stationary population with growth values not statistically different from zero, which is confirmed by finding comparable value of short-term and long-term effective population size. Our results suggest that the observed demographic decline in the European eel did not entail a genetic decline of the same magnitude. Forward-time simulations confirmed that large exploited marine fish populations can undergo genetic bottleneck episodes and experience a loss of genetic variability. Simulations indicated that the failure to pick up the signal of a genetic bottleneck in the European eel is not due to lack of power. Although anthropogenic factors lowered the continental stock biomass, the observation of a stable genetic effective population size suggests that the eel crash was not due to a reduction in spawning stock abundance. Alternatively, we propose that overfishing, pollution and/or parasites might have affected individual fitness and fecundity, leading to an impoverished spawning stock that may fail to produce enough good quality eggs. A reduced reproduction success due to poor quality of the spawners may be exacerbated by oceanic processes inducing changes in primary production in the Sargasso Sea and/or pathway of transport across the Atlantic Ocean leading to a higher larval mortality.  相似文献

From the Gong-Shy-Tyan (GST) Stream and the Tanshui River, Taiwan, eels ranged from 5.53 cm t.l . (elvers) to 72.5 cm t.l . Anguilla japonica accounted for 93-99%, A. marmorata 1-7% and A. bicolor pacifica less than 1% of all eels caught. Mean eel lengths increased from 10 cm t.l . at the downstream sites to 50 cm t.l . at the upstream sites. Females made up 92.8% of the sex-determined eels. Population density, averaged approximately 0.14 eel m−2 (2.42 g m−2) and 0.25 eel m−2 (0.92 g m−2) in downstream sites of the GST and Tanshui River, respectively, and decreased substantially with upstream distance. Eels were rarely found in the heavily polluted and dam constructed areas in the midstream site of the Tanshui River.  相似文献

Anguillid freshwater eels show remarkable life histories. In the Atlantic, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and American eel (Anguilla rostrata) undertake extensive migrations to spawn in the oceanic Sargasso Sea, and subsequently the offspring drift to foraging areas in Europe and North America, first as leaf-like leptocephali larvae that later metamorphose into glass eels. Since recruitment of European and American glass eels has declined drastically during past decades, there is a strong demand for further understanding of the early, oceanic phase of their life cycle. Consequently, during a field expedition to the eel spawning sites in the Sargasso Sea, we carried out a wide range of dedicated bio-physical studies across areas of eel larval distribution. Our findings suggest a key role of oceanic frontal processes, retaining eel larvae within a zone of enhanced feeding conditions and steering their drift. The majority of the more westerly distributed American eel larvae are likely to follow a westerly/northerly drift route entrained in the Antilles/Florida Currents. European eel larvae are generally believed to initially follow the same route, but their more easterly distribution close to the eastward flowing Subtropical Counter Current indicates that these larvae could follow a shorter, eastward route towards the Azores and Europe. The findings emphasize the significance of oceanic physical–biological linkages in the life-cycle completion of Atlantic eels.  相似文献

Recruitment of the three northern hemisphere eel species (European eel Anguilla anguilla, American eel Anguilla rostrata and Japanese eel Anguilla japonica) has reduced significantly over the past thirty-five years. The stock of the European eel is described as being outside safe biological limits, with urgent action required by European Union Member States to assist recovery of the panmictic stock. Stock recruitment models and estimates of silver eel output from a river catchment are strongly influenced by the degree of certainty in estimating key population parameters of each life history stage. Therefore, management decisions aimed at enhancing eel populations rely on sound scientific evidence, based upon a fundamental understanding of the complex anguillid eel life cycle. This review paper focuses on the estuarine entry phase of the eel life cycle and synthesises the current scientific knowledge with regard to glass eel migratory behaviour, sampling methods and abundance estimates within estuaries. Although the behavioural and environmental processes modulating glass eel migration patterns are reasonably well understood, site specific factors play a significant role in determining fine scale distribution patterns at an individual estuary level. Given the large resource commitment required to adequately sample this key life history stage, behavioural studies of migration patterns on a local scale are crucially important to aid the design of robust sampling programmes aimed at quantifying seasonal abundance and annual recruitment.  相似文献

Northern pike (pike) Esox lucius Linnaeus are broadly distributed across Wisconsin and provide an important sport fishery for anglers. Historical management has included use of angling regulations, stocking, and protection of critical habitat areas. Pike management is often a lower priority in comparison to more intensively managed species such as muskellunge Esox masquinongy Mitchell and walleye Sander vitreous. Pike provide angling opportunities year around, with higher catch rates and live release during open water, and higher harvest rates during winter. While length of pike caught during the two seasons is generally similar, there is some evidence that larger fish are caught during winter months. Results from minimum length limit changes implemented in 1995 have been equivocal and warrant further monitoring using standardized protocol to better determine effects on populations. If natural recruitment is not limited, pike populations can reach high densities and stunting can result. Loss of nearshore habitat has continued at an increased rate as more lake homes are built and shorelines graded, and altered with riprap, sand blankets, or sea walls. If natural recruitment is lacking, fry or fingerling stocking sustains or rehabilitates populations. Most pike stocking occurs in the southeastern portion of the state where habitat loss has been extensive. Stocking in other areas is largely to re-establish populations following a chemical reclamation or from winterkill. Future management needs to establish sampling protocols to ensure comparable data on both a temporal and a spatial scale. Etheostoma boschungi (Slackwater Darter) is a migratory fish species endemic to tributaries of the Tennessee River. Although the distribution of this species was historically disjunct and limited, current data suggest that the species is suffering a decline in both distribution and abundance, resulting in critically low population levels. Data collected over a 10-year period demonstrate an approximate 45 % distributional decline relative a previous survey. In addition, numbers of individuals collected at breeding sites has also declined during this time period. Detectability for sites with repeated sampling effort suggest that even where the species persists, it may be in numbers too low for detection with just one effort. Factors affecting persistence of Slackwater Darters may include passage barriers, such as culverts and loss of connectivity to flooded breeding sites due to channel incision, but data on the effects of these environmental factors are largely lacking.  相似文献

Thirteen river basins draining into the Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas were selected for evaluation of European eel (Anguilla Anguilla L., 1758) catch in Turkey. These basins were grouped into three so-called “eel monitoring area” (EMA). The official province-based annual landing data between 1996 and 2018 were assessed for each of the monitoring areas. Statistically significant decreases over the years were observed in the landing data in all of the monitoring areas. The adequate protection of the European eel standing stocks, particularly in some critical eel habitats such as Köyceğiz lagoon showed over time a small decrease in eel catches in EMA-2. However, a substantial decrease was detected in the province of Adana, which includes the Seyhan and Ceyhan basins, and these are located in the EMA-3. The catch data mainly based on the commercial fisheries and the restriction on export seems to be the main reason for the decline in catches in the three EMAs. Thus the suggested monitoring areas (EMAs) are needed to structure research programmes on basic knowledge on escapement ratio of migrating silver eels, arrival and upstream migration of glass eels in the rivers of each of the EMAs in order to build area specific management strategies. These monitoring areas may provide practical units that management can use in future fisheries regulations.  相似文献

The white sturgeon ( Acipenser transmontanus ) of the Kootenai River was listed as endangered on September 6, 1994 by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. This transboundary population, residing in Kootenay Lake and Kootenay River in Canada, and the Kootenai River in the US, has been in general decline since the mid-1960's. There has been very little recruitment to this population in the last 20 years.
This population became isolated from other white sturgeon populations of the Columbia River basin during the last ice age of approximately 10,000 years ago. The population adapted to the pre-development conditions of the Kootenai system, with a high spring freshet and extensive side channel and low-lying delta marshlands. Modification of the Kootenai River by human activities, such as industrial developments, floodplain dyking, and dam construction has changed the hydrograph of the Kootenai River, altering sturgeon spawning, incubation and rearing habitats and reducing overall biological productivity.
A Kootenai River white sturgeon draft recovery plan was prepared by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in cooperation with other agencies in the US and Canada. The plan was peer reviewed and there was a parallel public consultation process, where public commentary was invited from both sides of the international border. The short-term recovery objectives of the recovery plan are to prevent extinction and re-establish successful natural recruitment. The identified long-term objectives are the re-establishment of a self sustaining population and the restoration of productive habitat, in order to downlist to threatened status and subsequently delist this population when recovery is well established. Specific actions needed for recovery include spring flow augmentation during the reproduction period; a conservation aquaculture program to prevent near-term extinction; habitat restoration, and research and monitoring programs to evaluate recovery progress.  相似文献

Twenty-four fish species were collected during a study from October 1996 of the swamp-riverine fish populations of two spatially isolated Malaysian freshwater swamp ecosystems. Twenty one species were collected from the Beriah Kanan River, which is located in northern Peninsular Malaysia, compared to only 10 species obtained from the Ulu Sedili River in the south. At both sites, the species Rasbora einthovenii and Hemirhamphodon pogognathu appeared to be the most dominant species, whereas Rasbora pauciperforata and Nemacheilus selangoricus were very rarely caught and Beriah Kanan and Ulu Sedili River, respectively. An analysis of the physico-chemical data showed that although pH, conductivity and ammonium levels were fairly similar at both sites, orthophosphate, hardness and total suspended solids were relatively higher for Ulu Sedili River.  相似文献
