In species representing different levels of vertebrate evolution, olfactory receptor genes have been identified by molecular
cloning techniques. Comparing the deduced amino-acid sequences revealed that the olfactory receptor gene family of Rana esculenta resembles that of Xenopus laevis, indicating that amphibians in general may comprise two classes of olfactory receptors. Whereas teleost fish, including the
goldfish Carassius auratus, possess only class I receptors, the `living fossil' Latimeria chalumnae is endowed with both receptor classes; interestingly, most of the class II genes turned out to be pseudogenes. Exploring
receptor genes in aquatic mammals led to the discovery of a large array of only class II receptor genes in the dolphin Stenella Coeruleoalba; however, all of these genes were found to be non-functional pseudogenes. These results support the notion that class I receptors
may be specialized for detecting water-soluble odorants and class II receptors for recognizing volatile odorants. Comparing
the structural features of both receptor classes from various species revealed that they differ mainly in their extracellular
loop 3, which may contribute to ligand specificity. Comparing the number and diversity of olfactory receptor genes in different
species provides insight into the origin and the evolution of this unique gene family.

Summary Terrestrial species of salamanders generally have a higher diversity of prey in their stomachs and produce smaller and less frequent clutches than do species living in wetter habitats. This may be a consequence of differences in prey availability in the two types of habitats. Prey frequently fluctuate in availability in terrestrial areas as a result of fluctuations in rainfall and the inability of salamanders to forage efficiently during dry periods; the salamanders respond with a generalist diet and relatively K-selected reproductive tactics. In wetter habitats, prey fluctuations are probably dampened due to more constant conditions of moisture; salamanders respond with a more specialized diet and relatively r-selected reproductive tactics. 相似文献

- 1.1. The ECG of aquatic Amhystoma tigrinum from the Colorado Rocky Mountains was recorded while the animals submerged and emerged in water. Older larvae and metamorphosed adults were compared.
- 2.2. Free-swimming animals of both types showed slight emergence tachycardia when taking a “gulp” of air.
- 3.3. Preventing access to air for 30 min or more resulted in a slight bradycardia in larvae. Some adults responded with increased, others with decreased, heart rate depending on their level of excitement.
- 4.4. Restraining the animals before forced submergence caused a greater bradycardia than when unrestrained.
- 5.5. Low dissolved oxygen accentuated the cardiac responses of larvae to submergence but not in adults.
- 6.6. Atropine only partially blocked the diving responses of both forms.
- 7.7. The degree of submergence bradycardia seems to be a function of the ability to extract oxygen from water. It probably is not an adaptation to diving in these forms. Instead the submerged heart rate in these predominantly aquatic salamanders may be the “normal” rate with emergence tachycardias for breaths of air.

In comparison to other senses, the electrophysiology of olfactionhas been little studied in man. Some of the basic paradigmsused in the study of the other senses have not yet been widelyapplied to olfaction. Fundamental information such as the effectof stimuli of different intensities on the olfactory evokedpotential (OEP) has yet to be presented. To this end, 12 subjectsreceived olfactometrically delivered odorant pulses of tolueneat three intensity levels1600, 8000 and 16 000 p.p.m.Data were obtained from three electrode sitesFz, Cz andPz. An ANOVA revealed significant stimulus intensity and siteeffects. There was no difference in amplitude at the lowestintensities, although a significant increase in amplitude evokedby the 16 000 p.p.m. stimulus was observed. The amplitude recordedfrom Fz differed from that recorded from Pz. No latency differenceswere found, although there was a trend toward briefer latencywith greater stimulus concentration. The OEP responds with increasedamplitude to increased stimulus intensity, as do evoked responsesin other sensory modalities. Stimulus control over the OEP amplitudecan be obtained by varying the stimulus intensity. These dataare evidence that the common principles of sensory processingmay be extended to include the sense of smell.

Chemosensory stimuli and sex steroid hormones are both required for the full expression of social behaviors in many species. The terrestrial salamander, Plethodon shermani, is an emerging nonmammalian system for investigating the nature and evolution of pheromonal communication, yet little is known regarding the role of sex steroid hormones. We hypothesized that increased circulating androgen levels in male P. shermani enhance chemoreception through morphological, behavioral, and physiological mechanisms. Experimental elevation of plasma androgens increased development of cirri, morphological structures thought to enhance the transfer of chemosensory cues from the substrate to the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Elevated plasma androgens also increased expression of a chemo-investigatory behavior (nose tapping) and increased preference for some female-derived chemosensory cues. Male-produced courtship pheromones activated a large number of cells in the VNO as measured by the method of agmatine uptake. However, androgen levels did not affect the total number of vomeronasal cells activated by male-produced courtship pheromones. Future studies will determine whether androgens potentially modulate responsiveness of the VNO to female-derived (as opposed to male-derived) chemosensory cues. 相似文献

Previous reports have indicated that members of the proteid family of salamanders lack a vomeronasal system, and this absence has been interpreted as representing the ancestral condition for aquatic amphibians. I examined the anatomy of the nasal cavities, nasal epithelia, and forebrains of members of the proteid family, mudpuppies (Necturus maculosus), as well as members of the amphiumid and sirenid families (Amphiuma tridactylum and Siren intermedia). Using a combination of light and transmission electron microscopy, I found no evidence that mudpuppies possess a vomeronasal system, but found that amphiuma and sirens possess both vomeronasal and olfactory systems. Amphiumids and sirenids are considered to be outgroups relative to proteids; therefore, these data indicate that the vomeronasal system is generally present in salamanders and has been lost in mudpuppies. Given that the vomeronasal system is generally present in aquatic amphibians, and that the last common ancestor of amphibians and amniotes is believed to have been fully aquatic, I conclude that the vomeronasal system arose in aquatic tetrapods and did not originate as an adaptation to terrestrial life. This conclusion has important implications for the hypothesis that the vomeronasal organ is specialized for detection of non-volatile compounds. 相似文献

Environmental temperatures affect nearly all aspects of ectotherm physiology, including terrestrial salamanders. Therefore, habitat disturbances that alter temperature regimes may interact with physiological processes to affect energy budgets of salamanders or constrain surface activity and possibly lead to changes in population-level parameters. We hypothesized that warmer surface temperatures following harvesting of canopy trees could cause surface-active salamanders to expend more energy for metabolism, potentially leaving a smaller proportion of the energy budget available for reproduction or storage. From 2006 to 2008, we quantified temperature regimes of salamander refugia in a field experiment replicated at 4 sites that included plots subjected to a timber harvest and plots not manipulated during this time period. At each site, we quantified temperature regimes in regenerating forest stands which, approximately 10 years earlier, experienced a range of harvest intensity from shelterwood to silvicultural clearcut. Further, we compared energetic parameters including 1) calories required to maintain homeostasis across an active season, 2) abundance of available potential energy (i.e., invertebrate prey), and 3) a measure of growth and storage (i.e., body condition index) among silvicultural treatments for surface-active salamanders. For surface-active eastern red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus), mean calories required for maintenance were approximately 33% greater in recently harvested forest compared to unharvested controls, but body condition was inconsistent among treatments, and invertebrate abundances were similar among treatments but differed by study site. In contrast, we did not detect a treatment effect in any energetic metric 8–14 growing seasons after harvesting. Given that surface-active salamanders in recently harvested forest may be forced to restrain behaviors associated with foraging and mating or trade-off growth or reproduction for increased basic maintenance costs, energetics may be an important but overlooked short-term contributor to observed changes in abundances, reproductive demography, or surface activities after timber harvesting. Managing for both the rapid recovery of understory vegetation and retention of large stumps and logs may help mitigate warming of microclimate for salamanders and should be considered further. © The Wildlife Society, 2011 相似文献

Environmental change can disturb natural associations between wildlife and microbial symbionts, in many cases to the detriment of host health. We used a North American terrestrial salamander system to assess how the skin microbiota of amphibians responds to wildfires. In northern California's redwood/oak forests, we assessed how recent wildfires affected the skin microbiota of three different salamander species (Taricha sp., Batrachoseps attenuatus, and Ensatina eschscholtzii) over two different sampling seasons in 2018 and 2021. We found species-specific responses to wildfire disturbance on the alpha diversity of the skin microbiota of terrestrial salamanders, although burning in general altered the composition of the skin microbiota. The effect of burning on alpha diversities and body condition indices varied by sampling season, suggesting an additional effect of annual climatic conditions on body condition and skin microbiota response. We tested all salamanders for Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and found four infected individuals in 2018 and none in 2021. Our study documents correlations in the skin microbiota response to an increasing source of disturbance in western North American ecosystems. In addition, our results highlight the need to consider the effects of increased wildfire regimes/intensities and longitudinal effects on wildlife-associated microbiota and animal health. 相似文献

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) alleles likely have adaptive value because of overdominance, in which case MHC heterozygous individuals have increased fitness relative to homozygotes. Because of this potential benefit, the evolution of sexual reproduction between MHC-divergent individuals (i.e. negative assortative mating, NAM) may be favoured. However, the strongest evidence for MHC-based NAM comes from inbred animals, and context-dependent mating preferences have rarely been evaluated although they often occur in nature. We assessed the extent MHC-based mating preferences among wild tiger salamanders ( Ambystoma tigrinum ) using multiple molecular approaches. We genotyped 102 adults and 864 larvae from 36 breeding trials at both microsatellite and MHC loci. Parentage analysis revealed that reproductive success among males was positively associated with increased tail length and that with respect to the focal female, MHC-similar males sired a significantly higher number of offspring than more dissimilar males. This trend was consistent, even under context-dependent scenarios that favour traditional MHC-based NAM. These results suggest that the most MHC-divergent males may be at a reproductive disadvantage in pairwise breeding trials. Our data add to a growing body of evidence that suggests where it exists, MHC-based choice is probably dynamic and mediated by many factors that vary in the wild, notably signals from other indicator traits and by the quality and quantity of potential mates. 相似文献

The response of the blowfly Phormia regina to stimulation by aldehydes in the vapor phase has been studied by means of a specially designed olfactometer. The median rejection threshold and the maximum acceptance threshold were selected as criteria of response. For both acceptance and rejection the distribution of thresholds in the population is normal with respect to the logarithm of concentration. When thresholds are expressed as molar concentrations, the values decrease progressively as chain length is increased. There is no attraction beyond decanal and no rejection beyond dodecanal. When thresholds are expressed as activities, most members of the aldehyde series are approximately equally stimulating at rejection and equally stimulating at acceptance. The relationship is most exact over the middle range of chain lengths. There is a tendency for the terminal members to stimulate at higher activities. These relationships are in close agreement with those which were found earlier to apply to the normal aliphatic alcohols. The similarity between the relative actions of the members of the two series suggests that the relation of equal olfactory stimulation at equal thermodynamic activities by homologous aliphatic compounds at least for homologues of intermediate chain length may be of rather general application in olfaction. 相似文献

Cultivation-based and molecular approaches to characterisation of terrestrial and aquatic nitrifiers
Increased awareness of the metabolic diversity within autotrophic nitrifying bacteria has led to a re-evaluation of their
role in the cycling of nitrogen in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This has been accompanied by improvements in our ability
to characterise natural populations of autotrophic ammonia oxidising bacteria through the application of molecular techniques.
Molecular approaches indicate considerable diversity within natural populations and the association of different groups of
ammonia oxidisers with different environments and changes in populations in response to environmental factors. To some extent,
results from molecular approaches are consistent with those adopting laboratory enrichment and isolation strategies. Physiological
studies on the latter demonstrate links between phylogenetic groups and possession of characteristics of relevance to ecological
studies. Understanding of the significance of ammonia oxidiser species and functional diversity for global cycling of nitrogen
require greater links between molecular analyses, physiological studies and measurements of nitrogen cycling processes. However,
there is increasing evidence for physiological properties driving the environmental distribution of particular groups of ammonia
oxidisers and for associations between nitrification process rates and ammonia oxidiser community structure.

The aims of this study were to investigate how antennal olfactory cells of tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) code odour quality and how they are able to discriminate between attractive and repellent odours. For Glossina pallidipes Austen, a survey is presented of the cells' responses to attractive (1-octen-3-ol, acetone, 3-methylphenol, carbon dioxide) and repellent stimuli (2-methoxyphenol, acetophenone, lactic acid, naphthalene). In addition, the responses of these cells to binary mixtures and the dose-response curves of 1-octen-3-ol, 3-methylphenol, 2-methoxyphenol and acetophenone are presented. A minority of the cells responded to one attractant or repellent only, whereas the vast majority were excited by more than one of the attractive and/or repellent stimuli. It is proposed that the peripheral olfactory cells of tsetse discriminate between different compounds via an across-fibre pattern coding, in which the cells that specifically code for attractants or repellents may play a substantial role in composing a unique excitation pattern that informs the central nervous system about the specificity of odours. 相似文献

Summary Intraspecific predation is taxonomically widespread, but few species routinely prey on conspecifics. This is surprising as conspecifics could be a valuable resource for animals limited by food. A potential cost of cannibalism that has been largely unexplored is that it may enhance the risk of acquiring debilitating pathogens or toxins from conspecifics. We examined how pathogens affect variation in the incidence of cannibalism in tiger salamander larvae (Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum), which occur as two environmentally-induced morphs, typicals and cannibals. Salamanders from one population were more likely than those in another to develop into cannibals, even when reared under identical conditions. Variation in the propensity to become a cannibal may be caused by variation in pathogen density. In the population with cannibals at low frequency, bacterial blooms in late summer correlated with massive die-offs of salamanders. The frequency of cannibals correlated significantly negatively with bacterial density in ten different natural lakes. In the laboratory, cannibals exposed to a diseased conspecific always preyed on the sick animal. As a result, cannibals wre more likely to acquire and die from disease than were typicals that were similarly exposed, or cannibals that were exposed to healthy conspecifics. Since conspecifics often share lethal pathogens, enhanced risk of disease may explain why cannibalism is generally infrequent. Pathogens may constrain not only the tendency to be behaviorally cannibalistic, but also the propensity to develop specialized cannibal morphologies. 相似文献

Ionic selectivity of Ih channels of tiger salamander rod photoreceptors was investigated using whole-cell voltage clamp. Measured reversal potentials and the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz voltage equation were used to calculate permeability ratios with 20 mM K+ as a reference. In the absence of external K+, Ih is small and hard to discern. Hence, we defined Ih as the current blocked by 2 mM external Cs+. Some small amines permeate Ih channels, with the following permeability ratios (PX/PK):NH4+, 0.17; methylammonium, 0.06; and hydrazine, 0.04. Other amines are tially impermeant: dimethylammonium (< 0.02), ethylammonium (< 0.01), and tetramethylammonium (< 0.01). When K+ is the only external permeant ion and its concentration is varied, the reversal potential of Ih follows the Nernst potential for a K+ electrode. Ih channels are also permeable to other alkali metal cations (PX/PK): T1+, > 1.55; K+, 1; Rb+, > 0.55; Na+, 0.33; Li+, 0.02. Except for Na+, the relative slope conductance had a similar sequence (GX/GK): T1+, 1.07; K+, 1; Rb+, 0.37; NH4+, 0.07; Na+, 0.02. Based on permeabilities to organic cations, the narrowest part of the pore has a diameter between 4.0 and 4.6 A. Some permeant cations have large effects on the gating kinetics of Ih channels; however, permeant cations appear to have little effect on the steady-state activation curve of Ih channels. Lowering K+ or replacing K+ with Na+ reduces the maximal conductance of Ih but does not shift or change the steepness of its voltage dependence. With ammonium or methylammonium replacing K+ a similar pattern is seen, except that there is a small positive shift of approximately 10 mV in the voltage dependence. 相似文献

The function of kin recognition is controversial. We investigatedthe
adaptive significance of kin discrimination in cannibalistictiger salamander
larvae, Ambystoma tigrinum. Previous laboratoryexperiments show that
cannibals preferentially consume lessrelated individuals. We hypothesized
that this example of kinrecognition (1) is a laboratory artifact, (2) is a
by-productof sibship-specific variation in escape responses, because
cannibalsfrom families with rapid responses may be more likely to cannibalize
slowlyescaping non-kin, (3) is an epiphenomenon of species recognition,(4)
functions in disease avoidance, because kin may be moreinfectious than
non-kin, or (5) is favored by kin selection.We evaluated these five
hypotheses by using laboratory and fieldexperiments to test specific
predictions made by each hypothesis.We rejected hypotheses 1-4 above because
(1) kin recognitionwas expressed in the wild, (2) escape responses did not
reliablypredict whether a cannibal would ingest kin or non-kin, (3)kin
recognition was not most pronounced in populations wheretiger salamanders
co-occur with other species of salamanders,and (4) non-kin prey were more
likely than kin to transmit pathogensto cannibals. However, we established
that the necessary conditionfor kin selection, Hamilton's rule, was met.
Thus, our resultsimplicate kin selection as the overriding reason that
