In the first part of this paper we have assembled some properties of the quantitiesR m n , whereR m n denotes the number of distributions ofn different objects intom indifferent parcels, with no empty parcels allowed. We then discuss the following problem (N. Rashevsky, 1954, 1955 a,b, 1956): to find the total number,G n , of graphs that can be obtained from the biotopological transformation (T (1) X) for a given value of the parametern. This is related to the distribution ofn indifferent objects intom different boxes. A formula forG n is given which, however, is not very convenient for practical computations because it involves a summation over certain “admissible partitions” of the numbermn (m is a second parameter of the transformation). Some theorems are derived; with their help we can simplify the calculation ofG n to a small extent. The numbersG n are calculated forn≤9 and estimated forn=10. It is found thatG 7≈5.4×104,G 8≈8.3×105,G 9≈1.4×107, andG 10≈3×108. These values ofn are those which might be used in connection with N. Rashevsky’s work (cf. Rashevsky, 1956).  相似文献

A taxonomic study of the Korean Prostomidae is presented. Two species (Prostomis latoris Reitter, P. mordax Reitter) are recognized and P. mordax is reported for the first time in Korea. When the functionQ in the equation ∇2c +Q(c) = 0 is positive and is of a specified kind, the equation admits of a centrally spherical solution such thatc is positive everywhere, tending to zero at infinity anddc/dr=0 atr=0. Physically this corresponds to a local concentration of the solute in an infinite medium without any membranes present. This result would indicate the possibility of the formation of spontaneous concentrations and non-uniformities in non-linear diffusion fields. The statistical treatment of dosage-mortality data when the number of survivors is counted but not the total number of organisms in each sample, the latter being estimated from an untreated sample, has been discussed by Wadley (1949), on the assumption of Poisson variation in the number of organisms per sample. The procedure to be followed when a wider hypothesis is made that the number of organisms has a negative binomial distribution is described here; both the arithmetical analysis of the results and the optimum arrangement of the samples are considered.  相似文献

There exists a crisis in the delivery of medical services, particularly by family doctors of whom there is an apparent shortage.A study of family practice in Kingston, Ontario, and in the nearby countryside indicates three critical needs in family practice: professional assistants for the family doctors, efficient office facilities and new methods of delivering family medical care in rural areas. The Faculty of Medicine at Queen''s University has involved itself in a study of these matters and is developing a program to help solve them, by research into the nature of the problems and into methods for alleviating them, by keeping practising physicians informed through research reports and the continuing education program of the Medical School, by the development of pilot projects, and by the evaluation of new services aimed at these problems, independently launched by physicians in the community. Pilot projects to date include two designed to study the use of registered nurses as doctor assistants and another which involves the organization and operation of a university-sponsored community health centre. Last, but by no mean least, the Provincial Government is continually briefed on all these activities.  相似文献

A new method for analyzing stage-frequency data is proposed which is based on the estimation of rates of transition between one stage and the next highest stage in one unit of time, and a unit time survival rate that is assumed to be constant. Once these estimates are calculated it becomes possible to also estimate the mean durations of stages, stage-specific survival rates, and numbers entering stages. An advantage of the method is that it can be applied with any distribution of entry times to stage 1, and any distribution of numbers in stages when sampling begins. Use of the method is illustrated on data from a copepod population in a Canadian lake.  相似文献
