Parturient goats rapidly develop exclusive nursing of their own litter that relies on olfactory recognition of the young. They also show a period of postpartum anoestrus whose duration depends on the presence of the kid. In cattle, maternal selectivity is one of the factors that delays the recovery of sexual activity. To investigate the possible influence of maternal selectivity on the duration of postpartum anoestrus in goats, we compared the recovery of estrus behavior by daily estrus detection with an active buck in intact and selective nursing goats (n = 24) with that of dams rendered non-selective by peripheral hyposmia with ZnSO4 (n = 18). Postpartum anoestrus duration was shorter in intact (68+/-7 days) than in hyposmic mothers (93+/-7 days; P < 0.05). However, the cycles of normal duration were less frequent in intact goats (P = 0.03). We conclude that in nursing goats, preventing the establishment of selective nursing by prepartum peripheral hyposmia does not reduce postpartum anoestrus duration. Our results suggest that daily exposure to the buck may result in an earlier recovery of ovarian activity in intact mothers.  相似文献

Prolonged postpartum anestrus is a main factor limiting reproductive efficiency in cattle, particularly in Bos indicus and Bos taurus/Bos indicus cows from tropical regions, because it prevents achievement of a 12 month calving interval. During anestrus, ovulation does not occur despite ovarian follicular development, because growing follicles do not mature. Although many factors affect postpartum anestrus, nutrition and suckling are the major factors influencing the resumption of postpartum ovarian cycles, as they affect hypothalamic, pituitary and ovarian activity and thus inhibit follicular development. Under-nutrition contributes to prolonged postpartum anestrus, particularly among cows dependent upon forages to meet their feed requirements and it apparently interacts with genetic, environmental or management factors to influence the duration of anestrus. The nutritional status or balance of an animal is evaluated through body condition score (BCS), as it reflects the body energy reserves available for metabolism, growth, lactation and activity. There is a converse relationship between energy balance and time to resumption of postpartum ovarian activity; inadequate nutrient intake results in loss of weight and BCS and finally cessation of estrous cycles. Suckling interferes with hypothalamic release of GnRH, provoking a marked suppression in pulsatile LH release, resulting in extended postpartum anestrus. The effects of suckling on regulation of tonic LH release are determined by the ability of the cow to identify a calf as her own or as unrelated. Vision and olfaction play critical roles in the development of the maternal-offspring bond, allowing the cow to identify her own calf, and abolition of both senses attenuates the negative effects of suckling on LH secretion. Thus, the maternal-offspring bond is essential for prolonged postpartum suckling-induced anovulation, and the suppressive influence of suckling is independent of neurosensory pathways within the teat or udder.  相似文献

The effect of an intravenous infusion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) on the duration of postpartum anestrus in suckled beef cows was studied. Twenty-eight, mature, suckled beef cows were assigned in equal numbers to one of four treatment groups which were based on infusion with saline or GnRH (15ug/hour for 12 hours) and stage postpartum (pp) (20 or 35 days). Serum LH and progesterone were determined by radioimmunoassay for the period which began 5 days pre-infusion and ended at 55 days postpartum (ie: 35 or 20 days post-infusion). Serum LH remained below 5ng/ml during infusion in all control cows. Peak serum LH values, times of LH peaks, and duration of LH responses (means +/- SE) during infusion were 49 +/- 12 ng/ml, 162 +/- 42 minutes and 7.8 +/- 1.3 hours for the 20 day group and 44 +/- ng/ml, 144 +/- 6 minutes, and 8.2 +/- 1.1 hours for the 35 day group respectively. Serum progesterone levels indicated that the proportion of cows showing the onset of estrous cycles within 10 days of infusion was greater in the 20 day pp GnRH group (4/7) than the 20 day pp saline group (0/7) (p < .05) but was not significantly different between the 35 day pp GnRH (4/7) and 35 day pp saline (2/6) groups. The incidence of estrus was not affected by GnRH treatment and was 37% in all cows prior to 55 days pp. It was concluded that infusions of GnRH for 12 hours at a rate of 15 ug/hour could induce estrous cycles in suckled beef cows treated at 20 days postpartum.  相似文献

This trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of multiple eCG injections in the induction of estrus and pregnancy in Colored Mohair goats during the anestrus season. It was also aimed to determine total dose of eCG required for induction of estrus. Ten multiparous and lactating goats were used. The goats were randomly divided into two groups and treatments were started on May 22. Group eCG (n=5) was treated with eCG intramuscularly for 6 days. Daily dosages of eCG from May 22 to May 27 were 300 IU, 200 IU, 200 IU, 100 IU, 100 IU and 50 IU, respectively. Goats in control group received no treatment. Blood samples were taken from animals in each of the two groups just before and after the beginning of the treatments and serum progesterone concentrations were assayed by RIA. Starting on the fourth day after the first treatments, goats were exposed to fertile bucks twice daily for 30 min to detect standing heat. The estrus goats were allowed to be mated by the bucks. Pregnancies were determined 40 days after mating by real-time ultrasonography. One goat on day 5 and three goats on day 7 exhibited behavioral estrus in eCG group (80%) after the first eCG injection. Three of them (75%) became pregnant. None of the goats in the control group exhibited behavioral estrus. Mean serum progesterone concentrations had prominent elevations indicating ovulation in eCG group, but not in control group, after 20 days from the first treatments. Progesterone concentrations of eCG group were significantly different than those of control group on days 20 and 28 (P<0.05). The results suggest that divided multiple injections of a total 950 IU eCG are effective without progestagen pretreatment in the induction of estrus and obtaining successful pregnancy and live kids in Colored Mohair goats during the anestrus season.  相似文献

To determine the effect of body condition on the characteristics of the breeding season in female goats from subtropical Mexico, does in either greater- or lesser-body condition (n=20/group) were monitored for the expression of estrous behavior, ovulation and ovulation rate between June and April. The commencement of estrus and ovulation occurred earlier (P<0.05) in does in greater than lesser body condition. The cessation of estrus and ovulation was later (P<0.05) in female goats with greater than those with lesser body condition. Does in greater body condition had more (P<0.001) normal estrous cycles than those in lesser body condition. As consequence, does from the greater body condition group had fewer short (P<0.001) or long (P<0.05) estrous cycles than those of in the lesser body condition group. The ovulation rate was greater (P<0.01) in the greater (1.9+/-0.1) than lesser body condition does (1.6+/-0.1). In conclusion, female goats in lesser body condition have a shorter breeding season, more abnormal estrous cycles, and fewer ovulations than does in greater body condition.  相似文献

The effect of melatonin treatment on intervals from calving to first postpartum estrus and ovulation was determined in Shorthorn cows which calved May 8 to June 14. Melatonin (500 mg in beef tallow) was injected subcutaneously (s.c.) into 20 cows on June 15 (4 to 38 d postpartum). Ovulation was determined from progesterone concentrations in jugular venous blood collected weekly from June to August. Mean intervals to first estrus and first ovulation were significantly longer in primiparous than in multiparous cows (85 +/- 4 vs 55 +/- 3 d and 83 +/- 4 vs 52 +/-3 d). Melatonin treatment caused a significant increase in the intervals to first postpartum estrus (68 +/- 4 vs 58 +/- 5d) and ovulation (68 +/- 4 vs 55 +/- 5 d). Mean plasma melatonin concentrations during the daytime were significantly higher in treated than in control cows one and two weeks after melatonin injection and were within the lower range of nighttime values reported previously for cows. Thus melatonin treatment raised daytime plasma concentrations of melatonin and delayed the onset of estrus and ovulation. These results support the possibility of a role of photoperiod through melatonin secretion in the onset of postpartum ovarian activity in cattle.  相似文献

Eleven dairy goats of several breeds were administered 0.5 mg of the prostaglandin analogue fenprostalene (0.5 mg s.c.) on Days 146 to 148 of pregnancy. Parturition was successfully induced in all does, with a mean interval to first kid of 31.6 h +/- 0.83 (SEM). The course and duration of labor were normal. All kids were delivered alive. The incidence of dystocia due to fetal posture was 1/11; the incidence of fetal membranes retained for longer than 6 h was 1/11. These data indicate fenprostalene is safe and efficacious for induction of parturition with an interval to effect not significantly different from that reported for dinoprost or cloprostenol.  相似文献

The objective was to determine whether refractoriness to short and long days were involved in the end and onset of the breeding season, respectively, in goats adapted to subtropical latitudes. Ovariectomized does given a subcutaneous implant constantly releasing estradiol-l7 β (OVX+E) were used in two experiments. Plasma LH concentrations were determined twice weekly. In Experiment 1, the control group remained in an open-shed pen (natural day length and ambient temperature). Two experimental groups were placed in light-proof buildings (with natural temperature variations). One group was exposed to natural simulated increasing days (winter to spring), whereas the other was exposed to a winter solstice photoperiod (10 h of light) from December 21 to April 28. In Experiment 2, the control group remained under natural day length and ambient temperature. One experimental group was exposed to natural simulated decreasing days (summer to autumn), whereas the other group was exposed to a summer solstice photoperiod (14 h of light) from June 21 to October 20. In Experiment 1, the breeding season was not prolonged in does maintained in the winter solstice day length. Mean dates of decrease in LH secretion (end of the breeding season) did not differ significantly between does exposed to natural (February 3 ± 5 d) or natural simulated photoperiod (January 26 ± 14 d) and those exposed to constant short days of winter solstice (February 4 ± 10 d). In Experiment 2, the onset of the breeding season was not delayed in does maintained in the summer solstice day length. Mean dates of increase in LH secretion (onset of the breeding season) did not differ significantly between does exposed to natural (September 7 ± 8 d) or natural simulated photoperiod (September 18 ± 10 d) and those exposed to constant long days photoperiod of summer solstice (September 24 ± 4 d). In goats adapted to a subtropical environment, we concluded that: 1) the end of breeding season was due to refractoriness to short days, and not the inhibitory effect of increasing day length; and 2) the onset of the breeding season was due to refractoriness to long days, and not a stimulatory effect of decreasing day length.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if there is a seasonal pattern of sexual activity dependent on food availability in male Creole goats in subtropical Mexico. The study was conducted in the Laguna Region in the State of Coahuila, Mexico (26 degrees N). Male Creole goats (n = 8) were kept in a shed, fed alfalfa ad libitum and given 200 g of concentrate daily throughout the study. Live weight and testicular weight were determined every 2 wk. Sexual behavior and sperm production were determined monthly. Blood samples were obtained weekly to determine testosterone plasma concentrations. All variables were subjected to sinusoidal modeling procedures and showed important seasonal variations (P < 0.0001) with different phase angles for body weight, testicular weight and testosterone plasma concentrations. The nadir of live weight occurred in November and the peak in May. The lowest testicular weight (90 g) and testosterone plasma concentrations (0.1 ng/mL) were observed in January and February, respectively, while the peaks were observed in July and August (145 g and 10 ng/mL, respectively). Ejaculation latency also varied during the study, being low between May and November (96 sec) and reaching a peak in April (183 sec). Minimum number of spermatozoa per ejaculate occurred between February and April (1.4 x 10(9) cells/ejaculate) while the maximum number was observed between May and September (2.8 x 10(9) spermatozoa/ejaculate). Progressive sperm motility was low between January and April (3.04 on average) and high between May and November (about 3.55 on average). The percentage of live spermatozoa diminished between January and April (68% in April) and then increased to values around 80% between May and November. These results lead us to conclude that male Creole goats in Northern Mexico, fed constantly throughout the year, exhibit seasonality in their reproductive activity. Intense sexual activity occurred between May and December.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine whether the failure of males to induce sexual activity in goats during seasonal anestrus is due to unresponsiveness of females to male stimulus or insufficient stimulation from males. In the first study, one group of males (sexually inactive, SI; n = 4) was kept under natural photoperiod while the other (sexually active, SA; n = 4) was subjected to 2.5 mo of long days (16L:8D) and received 2 s.c. implants of melatonin. Two mo later, 2 different flocks of anovulatory goats previously separated from bucks were exposed to either SI (n = 34) or SA (n = 40) bucks. Progesterone assays and estrous behavior were used to determine ovarian and behavioral responses of the females to teasing. Of the goats exposed to SI males, only 2 ovulated, and none showed estrous behavior during the 35 days of the study. In contrast, all females (40 of 40) in contact with SA males ovulated and showed at least one estrous behavior during the first 11 days following male introduction (P < 0.001). Overall, 38 of 40 females stimulated with SA bucks were diagnosed pregnant at Day 35, according to progesterone assay (versus 0 in SI-treated group: P < 0.001). To control for a possible difference of responsiveness between flocks, the experiment was repeated 1 yr later using a single flock of goats divided into 2 groups. Again, over the first 14 days, 1 of 33 goats showed estrous behavior in the SI-treated group versus 27 of 33 in the SA-treated group (P < 0.001). Therefore, treating bucks with long days and melatonin increased their teasing capacity to induce sexual activity in females during anestrus. These results indicate that the absence of response to teasing at this time of the year is not due to female unresponsiveness, but to insufficient stimulation from the male.  相似文献

The correlations between some meteorological parameters and fertility data were evaluated in Barki x Rahmani crossbred ewes using the records of five consecutive years (2003-2007). Additionally, estrus detection and ultrasonic evaluation were applied on eighteen mature dry ewes during breeding and non-breeding seasons. The effect of lactation was evaluated by monitoring estrus behavior in ninety four lactating ewes from 40 to 120 d after parturition. Moreover, ultrasonography was used to identify ovarian activity in six cyclic and six acyclic non-lactating ewes. Results revealed that relative estrus occurrence and fertile mating were positively correlated (P <0.05) with high temperature and long photoperiod (conditions of summer season), and were negatively correlated (P < 0.01) with rainfall (condition of winter season). During breeding season, estrus rate, serum progesterone concentration, and diameter of largest follicle were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those observed during the non-breeding season. Furthermore, month of parturition had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on estrus rate of lactating ewes where ewes that lambed in August, September, and October recorded higher estrus rate than those lambed in November and December. However, the lactational strength did not exert any deleterious effect on the reproductive performance of lactating ewes.In conclusion, in Egypt under subtropical conditions, Barki x Rahmani crossbred ewes exerted optimum estrus behavior and fertile mating during summer season. The reduction in estrus activity during lactation was due to the seasonal effect rather than lactational stress.  相似文献

The secretion of unconjugated estrone and its production site in pregnant goats were investigated in vivo. The mean estrone concentration (n = 15) in the peripheral plasma increased gradually, being 83 pg/ml on Day 40 and 483 pg/ml on Day 140 after mating. The estrone concentration increased rapidly after Day 2 before partum, reaching a peak at parturition (2370 pg/ml), and falling to 171 pg/ml at Day 1 post partum. The concentrations of estrone from the umbilical vein and umbilical artery did not differ from that found in the maternal jugular vein, suggesting that the fetus does not take part in estrogen production. The estrone concentration from the uterine vein after the fetus was removed was higher than the concentrations found in the maternal jugular vein and umbilical artery. In the placental tissue, a high concentration of estrone (18157 pg per gram of wet tissue) was detected. These findings suggest that the main production site of unconjugated estrone is the placenta.  相似文献

The ovaries of periparturient pony mares (n=9 to 16 parturitions per month for January to April) were scanned ultrasonically on the day of parturition, while those of postpartum and control mares (n=12) were examined at least twice weekly. Four mares had apparent lactational anovulation (incidence, 7%) that corrected spontaneously (1 mare) or within 14 d after the weaning of foals on August 10 (3 mares). All but 2 of the postpartum ovulations occurred after April 29; that is, parturition did not effectively stimulate ovulation in ponies foaling during the anovulatory season. Mean diameter of the largest follicle per month increased (P<0.001) progressively in the controls (means: 11.4, 14.4, 19.0 and 24.5 mm for January to April, respectively). In the parturient mares, the diameter of the largest follicle on day of parturition did not increase over months (range of means: 13.6 to 16.9 mm), indicating that a suppressive effect of pregnancy counteracted the stimulatory effect of season. Within each month of parturition, diameter of the largest follicle increased (P<0.05) between Day 0 (day of parturition) and Day 3 or 7. Blood samples for FSH assay were taken daily for 14 d from 6 mares with parturition in the middle of each month and from 6 controls on the corresponding calendar days. In periparturient mares, a significant increase in mean FSH concentrations occurred for all months of parturition between Day-2 and Day 0, followed by a significant decrease between Day 3 and Day 7. Maximum means for the periparturient FSH profile were temporally related to the beginning of follicular growth. In the controls, FSH concentrations were not affected by month or day, or by their interaction. Within each month, mean FSH concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in the periparturient mares than in the controls (averaged over all months: 3.9 +/- 0.1 versus 7.9+/-0.3 ng/ml) even though follicular growth was greater following parturition than during the corresponding calendar days in controls.  相似文献

Little is known about human entrainment under natural conditions, partly due to the complexity of human behavior, torn between biological and social time and influenced by zeitgebers (light–dark cycles) that are progressively “polluted” (and thereby weakened) by artificial light. In addition, data about seasonal variations in sleep parameters are scarce. We, therefore, investigated seasonal variation in cross-sectional assessments of sleep/wake times of 9765 subjects from four European populations (EGCUT?=?Estonian Genome Centre, University of Tartu in Estonia; KORA?=?Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg in Germany; KORCULA?=?The Korcula study in Croatia; and ORCADES?=?The Orkney Complex Disease Study in Scotland). We identified time-of-year dependencies for the distribution of chronotype (phase of entrainment assessed as the mid-sleep time point on free days adjusted for sleep deficit of workdays) in cohorts from Estonia (EGCUT) and Germany (KORA). Our results indicate that season (defined as daylight saving time – DST and standard zonetime periods – SZT) specifications of photoperiod influence the distribution of chronotype (adjusted for age and sex). Second, in the largest investigated sample, from Estonia (EGCUT; N?=?5878), we could detect that seasonal variation in weekly average sleep duration was dependent on individual chronotype. Later chronotypes in this cohort showed significant variation in their average sleep duration across the year, especially during DST (1?h advance in social time from the end of March to end of October), while earlier chronotypes did not. Later chronotypes not only slept less during the DST period but the average chronotype of the population assessed during this period was earlier than during the SZT (local time for a respective time zone) period. More in detail, hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that, beyond season of assessment (DST or SZT), social jetlag (SJl; the discrepancy between the mid sleep on free and work days – which varied with age and sex) contributed to a greater extent to the variation in sleep duration than chronotype (after taking into account factors that are known to influence sleep duration, i.e. age, sex and body mass index). Variation in chronotype was also dependent on age, sex, season of assessment and SJl (which is highly correlated with chronotype – SJl was larger among later chronotypes). In summary, subjective assessments of sleep/wake times are very reliable to assess internal time and sleep duration (e.g. reproducing sleep duration and timing tendencies related to age and sex across the investigated populations), but season of assessment should be regarded as a potential confounder. We identified in this study photoperiod (seasonal adaptation) and SJl as two main factors influencing seasonal variation in chronotype and sleep duration. In conclusion, season of assessment, sex and age have an effect on epidemiological variation in sleep duration, chronotype and SJl, and should be included in studies investigating associations between these phenotypes and health parameters, and on the development of optimal prevention strategies.  相似文献

The geophytoelectrical current of three evergreen tropical tree species is studied as an indirect measure of their relative water content. Two intermediate shade-tolerant species (Aphananthe monoica and Pleuranthodendron lindenii), distributed in the middle and upper canopy strata, and an understory shade-tolerant species (Psychotria costivenia) were examined. The annual rhythm of geophytoelectrical currents per cm of diameter (DBH) is seasonal, with the highest occurrence in the winter and summer. There is a significant association between maximum temperature, moisture in the environment, and geophytoelectrical current per cm of DBH in the three species, as shown by multiple regression analysis. This finding suggests the existence of various geophytoelectrical current patterns which differs from that reported for temperate species.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of sterile service on estrus duration in multiparous and nulliparous dairy goats. Twenty Nubian goats (10 multiparous and 10 nulliparous) were randomly assigned to of 4 treatment groups (n = 5 animals per group). Group MNS, multiparous without service; Group MS, multiparous with service; Group NNS, nulliparous without service and Group NS, nulliparous with service. Estrus was synchronized by utilization of fluorogestone acetate intravaginal pessaries (40 mg.) over a 12-day period plus 250 IU, i.m. of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) at pessary removal. Estrus was detected with the aid of a vasectomized buck for 5 days after pessary removal for 6-hour intervals (0600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 hours). In the groups that were not serviced the teaser was equipped with an apron and was only allowed to mount. In the serviced groups, the teaser was permitted to mount and service each female on 2 occasions during the first 12 hours of estrus. Estrus initiation for Groups NNS, NS, MNS and MS were (mean +/- SD) 61.5 +/- 29.5, 61.2 +/- 35.4, 63.0 +/- 22.2 and 69.6 +/- 32.5 hours, respectively (P>0.05). Estrus duration for the same groups were (mean +/- SD) 42.0 +/- 12.0, 30.0 +/- 6.0, 42.0 +/- 7.3 and 28.8 +/- 10.7 hours, respectively. These results show that estrus duration was shortened by serving (P<0.01), and that there were no differences between multiparous and nulliparous goats with or without serving (P>0.05). It is concluded that estrus duration in goats is shortened by serving and that no differences in duration exist between multiparous and nulliparous.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of melatonin and level of nutrition on embryo yield during anestrous and breeding season. Adult Rasa Aragonesa ewes were assigned randomly to one of the four treatment groups in two experiments using a 2x2x2 factorial design. Individuals were treated (+MEL) or not treated (-MEL) with a subcutaneous implant of melatonin for 42d (Melovine, CEVA) and fed 1.5 (control, C) or 0.5 (low, L) times the daily maintenance requirements for 20d. Ewes were mated at oestrus (Day=0) and embryos were recovered on Day 5. Level of nutrition and melatonin supplements did not have a significant effect on ovulation rate or the number of recovered ova per ewe in the Reproductive Season (RS) and the Anestrous Season (AS). During the RS, undernutrition reduced the number of viable embryos per ewe (C: 1.1+/-0.2; L: 0.6+/-0.2; P<0.05); however, the number of viable embryos per ewe in the L+MEL group (0.2+/-0.15) was significantly lower than it was in the L, C+MEL and C groups (0.9+/-0.3, 1.2+/-0.3, 1.0+/-0.4, respectively; P<0.05). In the AS, nutrition did not have a significant effect on the number of viable embryos per ewe, although melatonin supplements might have improved rates slightly. Embryo viability rate (% viable embryos/embryos recovered) was unaffected by melatonin supplements or level of nutrition in the RS and the AS. Season had a strong effect on the number of viable embryos per functional corpus luteum among ewes in the L+MEL group, only (RS: 0.2+/-0.1; AS: 0.6+/-0.2; P<0.05). In conclusion, undernutrition impaired the viability of sheep embryos in the RS, particularly among ewes that were given melatonin supplements subcutaneously, but melatonin appeared to improve embryo quality in the AS, which suggests that the mechanisms involved in the interactive effects of melatonin and nutrition on embryo development are influenced by season.  相似文献
