The authors present the results of experimental-morphological study of the intestine and other internal organs of guinea pigs subjected and not subjected to starvation infected with a dysentery culture against the background of antiepithelial serum. Fluid flow and plaque formation in an aortic bifurcation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Considering steady laminar flow in a two-dimensional symmetric branching channel with local occlusions, a finite element model has been developed to study velocity fields including reverse flow regions, pressure profiles and wall shear stress distributions for different Reynolds numbers, bifurcation angles and lumen reductions. The flow analysis has been extended to include a new submodel for the pseudo-transient formation of plaque at sites and deposition rates defined by the physical characteristics of the flow. Specifically, simulating the onset of atherosclerotic lesions, sinusoidal plaque layers have been placed in areas of critically low wall shear stresses, and simulating the growth of particle depositions, plaque layers have been added in a stepwise fashion in regions of critically high and low shear. Thus two somewhat conflicting hypothetical correlations between critical wall shear stress levels and atheroma have been tested and a solution has been postulated. The validated computer simulation model is a predictive tool for analyzing the effects of local changes in wall curvature due to surgical reconstruction and/or atherosclerotic lesions, and for investigating the design of aortic bifurcations which mitigate plaque formation.  相似文献

The Réunion grey white-eye, Zosterops borbonicus, a passerine bird endemic to Réunion Island in the Mascarene archipelago, represents an extreme case of microgeographical plumage colour variation in birds, with four distinct colour forms occupying different parts of this small island (2512 km2). To understand whether such population differentiation may reflect low levels of dispersal and gene flow at a very small spatial scale, we examined population structure and gene flow by analysing variation at 11 microsatellite loci among four geographically close localities (<26 km apart) sampled within the distribution range of one of the colour forms, the brown-headed brown form. Our results revealed levels of genetic differentiation that are exceptionally high for birds at such a small spatial scale. This strong population structure appears to reflect low levels of historical and contemporary gene flow among populations, unless very close geographically (<10 km). Thus, we suggest that the Réunion grey white-eye shows an extremely reduced propensity to disperse, which is likely to be related to behavioural processes.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: [NiFeSe] hydrogenases are metalloenzymes that catalyze the reaction H2<-->2H+ + 2e-. They are generally heterodimeric, contain three iron-sulfur clusters in their small subunit and a nickel-iron-containing active site in their large subunit that includes a selenocysteine (SeCys) ligand. RESULTS: We report here the X-ray structure at 2.15 A resolution of the periplasmic [NiFeSe] hydrogenase from Desulfomicrobium baculatum in its reduced, active form. A comparison of active sites of the oxidized, as-prepared, Desulfovibrio gigas and the reduced D. baculatum hydrogenases shows that in the reduced enzyme the nickel-iron distance is 0.4 A shorter than in the oxidized enzyme. In addition, the putative oxo ligand, detected in the as-prepared D. gigas enzyme, is absent from the D. baculatum hydrogenase. We also observe higher-than-average temperature factors for both the active site nickel-selenocysteine ligand and the neighboring Glu18 residue, suggesting that both these moieties are involved in proton transfer between the active site and the molecular surface. Other differences between [NiFeSe] and [NiFe] hydrogenases are the presence of a third [4Fe4S] cluster replacing the [3Fe4S] cluster found in the D. gigas enzyme, and a putative iron center that substitutes the magnesium ion that has already been described at the C terminus of the large subunit of two [NiFe] hydrogenases. CONCLUSIONS: The heterolytic cleavage of molecular hydrogen seems to be mediated by the nickel center and the selenocysteine residue. Beside modifying the catalytic properties of the enzyme, the selenium ligand might protect the nickel atom from oxidation. We conclude that the putative oxo ligand is a signature of inactive 'unready' [NiFe] hydrogenases.  相似文献

The structure of pulsatile flow in a rigid aortic bifurcation model was studied by means of a flow visualization technique and three-dimensional laser-Doppler anemometry. The model was made of glass, having the same shape as that of the average human aortic bifurcation. It was installed into a mock circulatory loop that generated physiological pulsatile flow. Flow separation was observed during accelerated and decelerated flow periods. Double helical flow existed inside the flow separation in the early accelerated flow period. In the decelerated flow period, disturbed flow appeared behind the separation zone. Flow was strongly disturbed during the back flow period, and then was gradually stabilized in the forward flow period. The flow separation and the disturbances released from the flow separation zone greatly influenced near-wall velocities along the lateral wall. The wave form of the near-wall velocity in the flow separation zone was much different from that observed in the aortic portion and behind the separation zone; for example, the magnitude of the negative peak velocity in the direction of the tube axis was larger than that of the positive one, and mean velocity in a cycle was very low. This abnormal phasic change of the near-wall velocity may be associated with atherogenesis. The three-dimensional velocity measurement is very useful for the detailed analysis of near-wall velocity patterns.  相似文献

It is well known that metal objects perturb electromagnetic fields. Therefore, a conventional metal microdialysis probe cannot be used to determine the bioeffects of electromagnetic radiation. Using fused-silica tubing, we developed an inexpensive nonmetallic, rigid microdialysis probe for use in electromagnetic radiation research or during magnetic resonance imaging. This probe has a concentric tube design, with the membrane length adjustable to the size of the area to be dialyzed. The probes tested had regenerated-cellulose membranes that were 3 mm in length. This report describes how to make this probe. Average relative recovery rates at flow rates of 2.0, 1.0, and 0.5 μl/min were 21%, 27%, and 42%, respectively. These rates were slightly lower than the 30%, 42%, and 68% obtained with the commercially available metallic CMA10 microdialysis probe with a 3 mm membrane. This may be due to the fused-silica probe and CMA10 probe being made with different types of dialysis membranes. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

We describe a computer-aided self-test vision screener for testing near and far visual acuity. The device generates images separately for each eye on a LCD. Acuity can be measured in the range between 0.1 and 1.6 for any distance between 0.34 m and 6 m. In addition, it also enables testing for colour deficiency, phoria, stereopsis and contrast sensitivity. The device is fully automatic and enables self-testing of the above mentioned functions. Initial practical application in an industrial environment has demonstrated the practicability of the device.  相似文献

To investigate the determinants of maximal expiratory flow (MEF) with aging, 17 younger (7 men and 10 women, 39 +/- 4 yr, mean +/- SD) and 19 older (11 men and 8 women, 69 +/- 3 yr) subjects with normal pulmonary function were studied. For further comparison, we also studied 10 middle-aged men with normal lung function (54 +/- 6 yr) and 15 middle-aged men (54 +/- 7 yr) with mild chronic airflow limitation (CAL; i.e., forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity = 63 +/- 8%). MEF, static lung elastic recoil pressure (Pst), and the minimal pressure for maximal flow (Pcrit) were determined in a pressure-compensated, volume-displacement body plethysmograph. Values were compared at 60, 70, and 80% of total lung capacity. In the older subjects, decreases in MEF (P < 0.01) and Pcrit (P < 0.05), compared with the younger subjects, were explained mainly by loss of Pst (P < 0.05). In the CAL subjects, MEF and Pcrit were lower (P < 0.05) than in the older subjects, but Pst was similar. Thus decreases in MEF and Pcrit were greater than could be explained by the loss of Pst and appeared to be related to increased upstream resistance. These data indicate that the loss of lung recoil explains the decrease in MEF with aging subjects, but not in the mild CAL patients that we studied.  相似文献

To evaluate the efficacy of implanting a tilting disc aortic valve prosthesis in an angulated (wedged) supra-annular position, an in vitro experimental study was performed. The aortic valve prosthesis was mounted in an axi-symmetric valve chamber in a wedged position and incorporated in a mock circulatory system. Measurements were obtained on the transvalvular pressure gradient, percent regurgitation as well as velocity profiles and turbulent normal stresses distal to the valve. Our results showed that there was no significant reduction in the pressure gradient in mounting a larger sized valve in the wedged supra-annular position. On the other hand, the percent regurgitation increased with increase in heart rate and wedge angle. The valve failed to function properly above 110 beats min-1 at any wedge angle with the normal flow rate. The velocity profiles also showed significant changes with an increase in the turbulent normal stress with increase in wedge angle. Hence our study suggests that implanting the tilting disc prosthesis in a wedged supra-annular position in the aorta is not advisable.  相似文献

An ion exchange method using QAE-Sephadex for preparation of agarose with a low electroendosmotic flow and reduced adsorption properties is described. The successful use of such agarose for the separation of highly cationic proteins is illustrated.A method for isoelectric focusing of proteins in gels made from a mixture of purified agarose and a water-soluble non-cross-linked acrylamide polymer is described. This method can be combined with immunochemical identification by electrophoresis of the separated components into antibody-containing agarose gels, also containing such a polymer of acrylamide.  相似文献

Electromagnetic fields generated by living cells have been experimentally investigated in the past 3 decades; however, the results are often inconsistent. In this paper we discuss some technical aspects of such challenging experiments, a brief review of which is also included. Special attention is paid to the sensor with respect to the power available from a cell and the power needed to excite the macroscopic measurement devices. We drew the conclusion that the nanoelectronic approach should be used.  相似文献

After certain reconstructive vascular operations which concern the connection of two major arteries, in a number of cases the "steal syndrome" appears--interdependence of the volumetric blood stream passing through the connected arteries resulting from an artificially made too narrow a common trunk of the two arteries. The fluid expense, when it moves along the anatomical preparation of the aorta and its branches, demonstrates that there occurs a definite interdependence of the fluid expense in the major arteries at the branching coefficient K greater than 1. Calculation of the branching coefficient in the aorta at various levels performed in 25 human corpses reveals, in some cases K greater than 1. It can cause the interdependence between the volumetric blood stream and the vascular tonus in the neighbouring vascular regions in patients suffering from disturbances of some compensatory processes.  相似文献
