Taxonomic status and type specimens of Platycephalus bataviensis Bleeker 1853, described based on two syntypes (110 and 140 mm TL) from Batavia (= Jakarta), are discussed. Four platycephalid specimens have been recognized as possible syntype(s) of P. bataviensis. Of them, a specimen of 140.5 mm TL deposited at Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, identified as Inegocia japonica, is regarded to be the larger syntype and is designated as the lectotype of P. bataviensis in this study, while the paralectotype of the species is not identified. As a result, P. bataviensis becomes a junior synonym of I. japonica.

A new rheophytic species of Philodendron, viz. P. carajasense E. G. Gonç. & A. J. Arruda sp. nov., is described from the Carajás region, northern Brazil. This is the second rheophyte described in the genus, the first being P. flumineum E. G. Gonç. to which P. carajasense seems to be related. The new species is also compared with the closely related sympatric P. guttiferum, but the latter lacks the rheophytic habit. The new species is thought to be endemic to the Carajás region.

A new species of the grass genus Eragrostis Wolf, E. nilgiriensis C. P. Vivek, G. V. S. Murthy & V. J. Nair sp. nov. from Nilgiri district, Tamil Nadu, India is described and illustrated. The species is allied to E. barrelieri, but differs from it mainly by the primary panicle branches not spiculate up to base, leaves not glaucous, lemma shorter and acute and by a much smaller caryopsis. The new species is morphologically similar also to E. minor and E. nigra. A table listing differences between these species is provided.

Myxomycetes (also called Myxogastria or colloquially, slime molds) are worldwide occurring soil amoeboflagellates. Among Amoebozoa, they have the notable characteristic to form, during their life cycle, macroscopic fruiting bodies, that will ultimately release spores. Some 1,000 species have been described, based on the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of their fruiting bodies. We were interested in Physarum pusillum (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) G. Lister, a very common species described with two variants, each bearing such morphological differences that they could represent two distinct species. In order to test this, we observed key characters in a large selection of specimens attributed to P.  pusillum, to its synonyms (in particular Physarum gravidum), and to related species. In addition, the small‐subunit ribosomal RNA gene was obtained from seven of these specimens. Based on these data, we provide a comprehensive phylogeny of the order Physarida (Eukaryota: Amoebozoa: Conosa: Macromycetozoa: Fuscisporidia). Morphology and phylogeny together support the reinstatement of P. gravidum Morgan 1896 with a neotype here designated, distinct from P. pusillum, here redefined.

Deep water sharks are commonly caught as by-catch of longlines targeting bony fishes and trawlers targeting crustaceans in deep water off the southern Portuguese coast. Due to low or no commercial value, these species are most of the times discarded at sea, with only the larger specimens of some species commercialized at very low prices. In this study we present size distributions, maturity distributions, and sex ratios of 2,138 specimens belonging to four different species, namely the lantern sharks Etmopterus pusillus and Etmopterus spinax and the catsharks Galeus melastomus and Galeus atlanticus, caught with these two gears. Trawls generally caught smaller-sized specimens, in a wider length range than longlines. Trawls caught mostly immature specimens of all species, namely 83.7% immature of E. pusillus, 84.3% of E. spinax, 89.5% of G. melastomus, and 95.5% of G. atlanticus, while longlines caught mostly immature E. pusillus (69.2%) and G. melastomus (78.6%) and mostly mature E. spinax (88.2%) and G. atlanticus (87.2%). Trawls tended to catch more males than females of all species except E. spinax, while longlines caught more females than males of E. spinax and G. melastomus and more males than females of the other two species. The main conclusion of this work is that trawls are catching smaller-sized and mostly immature specimens when compared to longlines, meaning that they are probably having a more detrimental effect on these shark populations. The data presented here have significant implications for the conservation of these shark populations since sizes, sexes, and the immature and mature components of the populations are being affected differently by these two fishing gears. Evolutionary relationships in the widely distributed velvet worm Peripatopsis balfouri sensu lato species complex were examined using DNA sequence data, gross and SEM morphology. Sequence data were generated for the COI mtDNA and the 18S rRNA loci and analysed using a Bayesian inference approach, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined DNA sequence data revealed that Peripatopsis clavigera specimens from the southern Cape (clade 1) was sister to P. balfouri sensu lato specimens from the Cederberg Mountains (clade 2). Within the main P. balfouri sensu lato species complex, three addition clades could be discerned (clades 3, 4 and 5). The obligatory troglobitic species Peripatopsis alba was equidistant between the Cape Peninsula and adjacent interior (clade 3) and the two Boland and Hottentots Holland Mountains (clades 4 and 5). On the Cape Peninsula, P. stelliporata specimens nested among the sympatric P. balfouri sensu lato specimens. The Cape Peninsula specimens were sister to specimens from Jonkershoek site 1, Kogelberg and Simonsberg. Two Boland clades were retrieved, comprising Du Toit's Kloof, Bain's Kloof and Mitchell's Pass and sister (in clade 4) to specimens from the Boland and adjacent Hottentots Holland Mountains in clade 5. These results revealed complex biogeographic patterning in the P. balfouri sensu lato species complex. The presence of sympatric, yet genetically discrete species pairs at six of the sample localities (Du Toit's Kloof, Simonsberg, Jonkershoek sites 1 and 2, Kogelberg and Landroskop) suggests that there is reproductive isolation between the lineages. Divergence time estimations suggest a Miocene/Pliocene/Pleistocene cladogenesis. A taxonomic revision of the P. balfouri sensu lato species complex was undertaken to stabilize the taxonomy. P. clavigera is monophyletic and retained for the southern Cape specimens, P. balfouri sensu stricto is now confined to the Cape Peninsula and adjacent interior, while P. stelliporata is regarded as a junior synonym of the latter taxon, P. alba is endemic to the Wynberg Cave systems on the Cape Peninsula. Three novel species (Peripatopsis cederbergiensis, sp. n., Peripatopsis bolandi sp. n. and Peripatopsis purpureus, sp. n.) are described.

Based on comprehensive field observations and careful herbarium studies, we discuss the status of the type species of Metasasa W. T. Lin (M. carinata W. T. Lin) and entities previously treated as synonyms of its name. Three species in two genera were involved. First, M. carinata and M. albofarinosa W. T. Lin were confirmed to be conspecific and a new combination Acidosasa carinata (Lin) D. Z. Li & Y. X. Zhang is proposed. Secondly, although M. carinata was previously treated as a synonym of Acidosasa nanunica (McClure) C. S. Chao & G. Y. Yang, close morphological study revealed that these two are not conspecific. Pseudosasa nanunica (McClure) Z. P. Wang & G. H. Ye is restored to accommodate this distinct species. Finally, another name previously treated as a synonym of A. nanunica, Pseudosasa acutivagina T. H. Wen & S. C. Chen should also be resumed. Synonyms are provided for each of these three species.

Recent studies identified several distinct genetic lineages within the softshell turtle genus Pelodiscus that could represent valid species. Traditionally, Pelodiscus was regarded to comprise only a single species (P. sinensis). These softshell turtles are economically the most important chelonians of the world, with hundreds of millions of specimens traded as food every year. Moreover, Pelodiscus is used as a model organism for embryological and physiological studies, making correct species identification of paramount interest for disciplines beyond taxonomy. However, the understanding of the diversity of Pelodiscus was seriously hampered by the unclear taxonomic allocation of the oldest available species name, Trionyx (Aspidonectes) sinensis Wiegmann, 1834 . To clarify its identity, we reconstructed two mitochondrial DNA fragments of 1013 bp (cytb) and 468 bp (ND4) length of one of the two surviving syntypes and designate this specimen as lectotype (ZMB 38, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin). The sequences obtained from the lectotype represent a previously unknown lineage. Using the phylogenetic placement of all lineages and uncorrected p distances of the mitochondrial cytb gene as a yardstick, we suggest that the observed sequence variation is consistent with the existence of at least four distinct species within Pelodiscus. The name P. sinensis should be restricted to turtles harbouring the mitochondrial lineages B, C, D and the lineage of the lectotype. More divergent lineages are to be identified with P. axenaria, P. maackii and P. parviformis, which are recognized as valid species.

Pseudorhabdosynochus epinepheli (Yamaguti, 1938) has been recorded from a variety of hosts, mainly groupers. All type-specimens of Diplectanum epinepheli Yamaguti, 1938, Pseudorhabdosynochus epinepheli Yamaguti, 1958 and Cycloplectanum hongkongensis Beverley-Burton & Suriano, 1981 are figured: it is concluded, as did Kritsky & Beverley-Burton (1986), that the three species are synonymous. In addition, numerous monogenean specimens from a deep-sea grouper, Epinephelus chlorostigma, collected off New Caledonia, South Pacific, were prepared using various methods and described. These specimens are also conspecific with P. epinepheli (Yamaguti, 1938) and represent a new geographical record. This species has a sclerotised vagina with a very characteristic primary chamber. The simultaneous presence of P. lantauensis (Beverley-Burton & Suriano, 1981) and P. epinepheli was noted in both type-slides of D. epinepheli from Japan (host: E. akaara) and C. hongkongensis from Hong Kong (host: E. bruneus). Several causes are suspected for the alleged ‘generalist’ character of P. epinepheli, including the misidentification of either fish or monogeneans and the accidental exchanges of monogeneans between fishes of different species kept alive in the same tank. Finally, the confirmed list of hosts of P. epinepheli includes E. akaara, E. awoara and E. chlorostigma; it is suggested that the latter, a widespread deep-sea fish, serves as a reservoir for the infection of the other species, which are associated with shallow waters. P. satyui n. sp. is described from two specimens found on slides from E. akaara (from the Inland Sea of Japan) deposited by Yamaguti; the new species has a sclerotised vagina with characteristic spherical chambers.

Length–weight relationships were determined in 39 muraenid species belonging to seven genera collected during 2003–2008 from the waters around Taiwan. Various fishing methods were used to collect both the adult and pre‐adult moray eel specimens. Length–weight relationship records of 28 species are provided for the first time. New maximum size records of six species were also established: 61.2 cm for Gymnothorax monostigma, 88.2 cm for G. niphostigmus, 68.6 cm for G. shaoi, 53.9 cm for G. taiwanensis, 73.2 cm for G. thyrsoideus, and 37.3 cm for U. micropterus.

The Kerala mud snake, Enhydris dussumierii Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, has long been known only from syntypes collected in the nineteenth century, but more recent specimens have provided the opportunity for molecular work. Using Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of 2200 base pairs of cytb, 16S, and c-mos, we recovered the Kerala mud snake as the sister species to the Chinese mud snake, Enhydris chinensis (Chinese–Vietnamese endemic). The DNA results establish the position of dussumierii and chinensis as separate from the Enhydris clade, and together they form the sister group to most of the other fanged homalopsids ((Bitia+Cantoria) + (Erpeton+Gerarda+Fordonia) + (Myron+Pseudoferania) + (Enhydris punctata) + (Homalopsis+Enhydris bocourti) + (Cerberus)). Here we resurrect Ferania Gray for Enhydris sieboldii Gray, establish a new genus for the E. chinensis clade (bennettii+chinensis), and apply the generic replacement name Dieurostus Berg to E. dussumierii Duméril, Bibron & Duméril. A biogeographic scenario is proposed based on the ecology, distribution and salt tolerance of the species composing a hypothesized (not supported with molecular evidence) Asian coastal lineage that is distributed from Pakistan's Indus River delta to temperate coastal China.

Old World species of the genus Glenanthe are treated comprehensively with an emphasis on the unusually diverse morphological heterogeneity discovered in structures of the male terminalia. As perspective for this treatment, the tribe Lipochaetini, in which Glenanthe is placed, is characterized and discussed, and an annotated key to the four included genera is provided to facilitate their identification. Glenanthe is demonstrated to be a monophyletic lineage within Lipochaetini. Seven Old World species of Glenanthe are now known, including two new Afrotropical species as follows (type locality in parenthesis): G. namibia n. sp. (Namibia. Mukwe: Divuju: Okavango River [18°04’04”S, 21°28’51”E] and G. danielssoni n. sp. (Republic of South Africa. Cape Province: De Hoop Nature Reserve [34°27’S, 28°25’E]. The identity of G. fuscinervis Becker, revised status (raised from synonymy with G. ripicola (Haliday)), is clarified, and found to be conspecific with Hydrina ochracea Oldenberg, which is recognized as a junior synonym. Papp’s synonymy of Glenanthe fasciventris Becker with Hydrellia (Glenanthe) ripicola Haliday is confirmed, and herein we relegate G. iranica Canzoneri & Rampini also as junior synonym of G. ripicola. The remarkable diverse structures of the male terminalia of all included species are described and illustrated and distribution maps are also provided.

Gordionus violaceus (Baird, 1853) and G. wolterstorffii (Camerano, 1888) are regarded as two species which are clearly separated by distinct cuticular patterns. A study of 59 specimens of these two species from Britain and Ireland revealed numerous transitional stages between the cuticular patterns that are regarded as being typical for each species. Variation was also found at the posterior end, but no character separates both species. Therefore, G. violaceus and G. wolterstorffii might represent one polymorphic species. Four specimens resembled G. violaceus but had a different cuticular pattern, including a second type of areole occurring in a pattern which has been named a megareolar pattern. This might represent a separate species, but a detailed determination relies upon further revisional work in the genera Gordionus, Parachordodes and Paragordionus.

Globodera pallida and G. rostochiensis are two cyst‐forming nematodes known to infest potato crops, causing severe economic losses worldwide. In this study, a real‐time TaqMan PCR assay was developed and optimized for the simultaneous detection of G. pallida and G. rostochiensis. The assay's analytical and diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were evaluated using reference isolates. Four different DNA extraction methods and one rapid crude template‐preparation procedure were compared in terms of extraction purity, efficiency for PCR applications, utility and cost. Extraction methods A and B included two commercially available kits that utilize silica columns and magnetic beads, respectively. Method C was based on DNA isolation using Chelex resin, and method D was a standard chemistry in‐house protocol. Procedure E included the direct use of crude mixture composed of disrupted cysts in Tris–EDTA buffer. The multiplex TaqMan PCR assay successfully discriminated the two nematode species from all reference cyst samples and its recorded diagnostic sensitivity (Dse) and specificity (Dsp) was 100%. On the contrary, in conventional (Co) PCR tests, the overall Dsp and Dse were lower and estimated at 94 and 87% for G. pallida, and 97 and 88% for G. rostochiensis, respectively. Spectrophotometric results showed that DNA extraction methods A, B and C yielded the purest DNA and gave the lowest mean Ct values as well as the most consistent results in Co PCR. Alternative crude preparation method E resulted in statistically similar and Ct values consistent with those obtained with methods A to C when tested by TaqMan PCR. The developed assay, using crude template‐preparation E, allows the simple, accurate and cost‐effective testing of a large number of cyst samples and can be applied in surveys and certification schemes.
