Parthenium hysterophorus L. an exotic, pernicious weed is considered as one of the most troublesome weeds for agricultural sector by virtue of its high ecological amplitude and adaptability. Microbes and their by-products are now proved to be a worthy alternative to toxic chemicals used for weed management. Alternaria macrospora MKPI was isolated from the parthenium leaves infected with leaf blight and found pathogenic to the weed. The herbicidal potential of cell free culture filtrate of A. macrospora MKP1 has been tested against parthenium by employing detached leaf bioassay and seed germination bioassay and a significant damage was exhibited by the cultural filtrate of pathogen to the parthenium leaves and seeds.  相似文献

Parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) is an invasive alien plant species that is spreading rapidly all over the world. With globalization and climate change, it will continue to spread, posing threats to agriculture, biodiversity and the environment. To determine its invasion and impacts in Bhutan, an investigation was undertaken in West-Central Bhutan using a questionnaire survey, complemented by MaxEnt modelling. Most farmers (19–30%) recall having seen parthenium for the last 11–15 years, or more. Infestations of parthenium differed significantly (P?<?0.05) across three districts for dryland, orchards, fallow land and pastures, but not in rice fields and on roadsides. The most intensely invaded land types were fallow land, pastures, and roadsides, with farmers perceiving it as ‘somewhat common’(score?~?3) and ‘common’ (score?~?4) weed. Farmers’ perceptions of the invasiveness of parthenium weed were high at 77% (Wangdue), 80% (Punakha), and 88% (Tsirang), considering it as at least ‘somewhat invasive’, or higher. Only 13–25% of respondents scored the weed as ‘highly invasive’. Parthenium invasion significantly (P?<?0.01 to 0.001) escalated the cost of production, reduced fodder quality, supressed native species and caused allergies to the locals in the study districts. Further, MaxEnt modelling of parthenium distribution was undertaken, using the parthenium presence-only data and bioclimatic variables, under 2 CO2 emission scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), i.e. Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6 and 8.5). The projections showed discernible spatial changes in climate suitability over 2070, mostly in the mid- and high-altitude zones, indicating aggressive incursion into Bhutan’s important agro-ecological landscapes. The findings, highlight the urgent need to initiate parthenium management strategies for food production and natural resources.

Parthenium poses serious threat to modern crop production system and necessitate evaluating control practices for its effective management. Efficacy of different weed control practices for controlling parthenium was explored in conventional and deep tillage systems in the field conditions. Hand hoeing (20 and 35 days after emergence), S-Metolachlor (pre-emergence herbicide), sorghum straw mulch @ 5 tons ha-1 and combination of hand hoeing and sorghum straw mulch (hand hoeing at 20 and straw mulch at 35 days after emergence) were used as weed control practice. Weedy check where no weed control measure was applied was also included in this experiment for comparison. Results concluded that the all weed management treatments significantly reduced parthenium density, its fresh and dry biomass during both the years of study as compared to weedy check. Maximum sunflower achene yield was recorded in hand hoeing (20 and 35 days after emergence) in combination with deep tillage. So, mold bold plough used for the purpose of deep tillage should be encouraged for better control of parthenium and higher achene yield of sunflower crop (3293.3 kg ha-1 in 2017 and 3221.3 kg ha-1 in 2018). Moreover, is also inferred that total dose of herbicide might be reduced by using hoeing and mulching in an integrated way.  相似文献

In some parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra states (India), a leguminous undershrub, Cassia uniflora has effectively replaced the problematic weed Parthenium hysterophorus (parthenium). The studies revealed that the phenolic leachates from different parts of C. uniflora, specially from germinating seeds significantly inhibited the germination of parthenium seeds and retarded the growth of seedlings from the successfully germinated parthenium seeds. At field level, seedlings of C. uniflora outcompeted the seedlings of summer generation of parthenium causing reduction in height, dry weight and number of inflorescences of the latter which ultimately resulted in reduction of their seed output. Because of its longer life span, C. uniflora effectively prevented the establishment of parthenium plants of the winter generation in its area of growth. Results indicate that C. uniflora replaces parthenium through interference.  相似文献

Parthenium hysterophorus L. is a weed of global significance that has become a major weed in Australia and many other parts of the world. A combined approach for the management of parthenium weed using biological control and plant suppression, was tested under field conditions over a two-year period in southern central Queensland. The six suppressive plant species, selected for their demonstrably suppressive ability in earlier glasshouse studies, worked synergistically with the biological control agents (Epiblema strenuana Walker, Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister, Listronotus setosipennis Hustache and Puccinia abrupta var. partheniicola) present in the field to reduce the growth (above ground biomass) of parthenium weed, by between 60–86% and 47–91%, in Years 1 and 2, respectively. The biomass of the suppressive plants was between 6% and 23% greater when biological control agents were present than when the biological control agents had been excluded. This shows that parthenium weed can be more effectively managed by combining the current biological control management strategy with selected sown suppressive plant species, both in Australia and elsewhere.  相似文献

Parthenium hysterophorus (parthenium) is a weed of international importance and is spreading rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa. Consequently, it has been targeted for biocontrol in South Africa since 2003. Based on precedents elsewhere in the world, the defoliating beetle Zygogramma bicolorata was prioritised as a candidate agent. Although no-choice tests, involving some 48 test plant species, indicated a significant preference for parthenium, significantly reduced feeding and oviposition was recorded on some species. Multiple-choice tests resolved many of these non-target results; however, Helianthus annuus (sunflower) was still selected for oviposition and feeding. Of the 12 sunflower cultivars tested, four were selected for oviposition, while two were selected for oviposition and feeding. These six cultivars were then subjected to larval development trials, together with three native and two weed species (in the Asteraceae). These trials showed high levels of complete development on parthenium, significantly reduced development on sunflower cultivars, and partial development on only one of the weed species. Finally, a risk assessment was conducted on the six sunflower cultivars to quantify Z. bicolorata feeding and reproductive performance. Feeding risk calculations revealed these cultivars to have an extremely low risk (<0.2%) of supporting Z. bicolorata feeding and development. Similarly, reproductive risk calculations showed a very low risk (<0.16%) of supporting viable Z. bicolorata populations. These data are supported by findings from both the native (Mexico) and introduced ranges (Australia, India) of Z. bicolorata, where it has never been recorded as a pest of sunflower. These considerations were accepted by the regulatory authorities and in August 2013, Z. bicolorata became the second insect agent to be released in South Africa for the biocontrol of parthenium.  相似文献

Parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus) is one of the most noxious herbaceous weeds in the world with adverse impacts on among others animal and human health, crop production, the environment, local as well as national economies. To optimize Parthenium mitigation, it is necessary to accurately monitor its spread using earth observation data. However, one of the challenges of mapping Parthenium weed is that its spectral response is similar to that of surrounding herbaceous plant species, resulting in low classification accuracies. Due to variability in its phenological characteristics and associated species, determining differences within the growing season may optimize the discrimination and subsequent mapping of the Parthenium weed. However, determination of the window(s) with the most prominent variability has been overlooked in past studies. Furthermore, no specific algorithm has been determined to be efficient in finding such window(s). ExtraTrees (EXT), an underused classifier in earth observation studies, possess interesting properties for satellite image processing such as high speed and performance. In this regard, this study attempted to (1) determine the optimal window period for discriminating Parthenium weed from coexisting plant species and (2) to compare the performance of EXT and the random forest (RF) algorithms. Results showed that the beginning of February was the optimal period for mapping Parthenium weed, with overall accuracy of 88.1%. EXT outperformed RF for most of the dates. This study lays the foundation for optimizing earth observation data derived models for characterizing invasive species, leveraging on the high temporal resolution of the new generation sensors.

The stem-galling weevil Conotrachelus albocinereus Fiedler has been investigated as a potential biological control agent against parthenium weed ( Parthenium hysterophorus L.) in Australia. Adults were tested in multiple-choice feeding and oviposition tests on 56 plant species in 51 genera. No feeding or oviposition was recorded on any non-target plant except annual ragweed ( Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), a closely related weed. Field releases of the weevil in Queensland, Australia, commenced in 1995 and establishment has been recorded at several sites.  相似文献

A basic question in insect–plant interactions is whether the insects respond to, or regulate plant traits, or a complex mixture of the two. The relative importance of the directions of the influence in insect–plant interactions has therefore been articulated through both the plant vigor hypothesis (PVH) and the resource regulation hypothesis (RRH). This study tested the applicability of these hypotheses in explaining the interactions between Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae) and its stem‐galling moth, Epiblema strenuana Walker (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Parthenium plants exposed to galling were sampled at three sites in north Queensland, Australia, over a 2‐year period, and the relationship between gall abundance and plant vigor (plant height, biomass, flowers per plant, and branches per plant) was studied. To test the predictions of PVH and RRH, the vigor of parthenium plants protected from galling using insecticides was compared to galled plants and plants that escaped from galling. The vigor of ungalled plants was less than the vigor of galled plants. The higher plant vigor in galled plants was not due to galling, as was evident from insecticide exclusion trials. The insect seemed to preferentially gall the more vigorous plants. These findings support the predictions of the PVH and are contrary to those of RRH. Since gall abundance is linked to plant vigor, galling may have only a limited impact on the vigor of parthenium. This has implications for weed biological control. If the objective of biological control is to regulate the population of a plant by a galling insect, a preference for more vigorous plants by the insect is likely to limit its ability to regulate plant populations. This may explain the paucity of successes against biocontrol of annual weeds using gall insects.  相似文献

Invasive weeds have threatened the integrity of ecosystems throughout the world. They affect not only the species diversity of native areas but also their biological integrity. In India, a number of invasive exotic weeds have been reported but some viz. Parthenium hysterophorus, Lantana camara and Ageratum conyzoides, especially those from tropical America are troublesome and have caused adverse ecological, economic and social impact. These weeds can be seen growing in different landscapes but are luxuriantly localized in unattended forests and cultivated areas. Parthenium hysterophorus (Asteraceae, commonly known as congress grass) is perhaps the most troublesome and noxious weed of urban and rural India. Besides rapidly colonizing areas replacing the native vegetation, it is also known to cause a number of human health problems such as skin allergy, rhinitis and irritation to eyes of the residents in the vicinity. Likewise, it causes fodder scarcity in addition to being unpalatable and toxic to livestock. Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), another serious tropical American pest, has encroached upon large areas of land, especially the forests where it has virtually replaced the forest floor vegetation and reduced tree growth. Also because of its bushy and spreading type of growth it obstructs forest operations. The third weed, Ageratum conyzoides (Asteraceae, Billy goat weed) has invaded agricultural fields. It interferes with crops and causes yield reductions of major staple crops of India. When it invades rangeland areas, it out competes native grasses causing scarcity of fodder. These weeds have similar growth strategies such as fast growth rates, short life-cycles, greater reproductive potential, high competitive abilities and allelopathy that make them successful invaders of native habitats. Mechanical, chemical, biological and cultural control tactics have failed individually, though integrated approaches combining all these approaches along with community participation and proper land management have been relatively successful. This paper presents various aspects of biology, ecology, hazards and control measures of these weeds.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an important cereal crop in Pakistan which is suffering from major grain production loss because of weed infestations. Control of weeds by herbicides is a primary weed management tool in wheat crop which can be detrimental to the environment and grain produce. Development of an efficient and eco-friendly alternate to the herbicidal weed control, testing the effectiveness of cultural weed control (crop row orientation, selected wheat genotypes and hand weeding) and plants water extracts was undertaken for weed control in wheat. An experiment was run under field conditions in winter season in 2016–2017 and in 2017–2018 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. The repeated experiment was each time undertaken using a randomized complete block design with a double split plot arrangements at the New Developmental Farm, University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan. The crop row orientations used were assigned to the main plots. The wheat genotypes used were assigned to the sub-plots. The allelopathic water extracts and hand weeding were assigned to the sub-sub plots. The averaged mean values for row orientations of both the years revealed lowest weed density (95.7 weeds m?2), highest grains per spike (47.3), 1000 grains weight (44.7 g) in north to south row orientation. The averaged mean values of weed density (101.6 weeds m?2), grains per spike (48.2), 1000 grains weight (45.9 g), crude protein content (12.793%), crude fat content (1.533%) and ash content (1.586%) were greater for the wheat genotype Pirsabaq-2013 and Atta-Habib-2010. Water extract of S. halepense, P. hysterophorus, H. annuus and hand weeding showed significantly lower weed density (84.0 to 93.3), grains per spike (50.9 to 48.3), 1000 grains weight (48.3 to 46.2 g), grains protein content (12.280 to 12.209%), grains crude fat content (1.471 to 1.464%) and grains ash content (1.523 to 1.515%). Interaction effect of different tested weed control treatments i.e. N-S × Pirsabaq-2013 and Atta-Habib-2010 × water extract of S. halepense, P. hysterophorus and H. annuus were found to show further reduction in weed density and enhance grains per spike and grains nutrition contributing parameters. Our results show that sowing wheat genotypes Pirsabaq-2013 and Atta-Habib-2010 in north-to-south row orientation, and application of water extract of S. halepense, P. hysterophorus, H. annuus can give an effective weed management and increased quality grain yield of wheat.  相似文献

Variability in climate context is causing direct effects on reducing crops production. Possible strategies to counteract the impact of climate change is to configure the sowing time of crops and to seek out crop cultivars that are adapted to extreme climatic conditions of a specific ecological zone. Experiments were conducted at three ecological zones of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan i.e. (i. Agronomy Research Farm, The University Agriculture Peshawar ii. Agriculture Research Institute, Mingora, Swat iii. Farmers field, Karak, during the summer season, 2017–2018). Experiment was laid-out in Randomized Complete Block Design with split plot arrangement having four replications. Maize cultivars i.e. local open pollinated varieties (Azam, Jalal) and two hybrids (CS-200, CS-220) were sown on different dates starting from May 25 to July 25 with twenty days interval. Analysis of the data showed that early sowing (25th May) of maize in all zones (Karak, Peshawar and Swat) resulted in maximm emergence m−2, early emergence, highest leaf area, leaf area index, maximum light interception and higher chlorophyll content. However, delay in sowing time from 15th June onward in all zones resulted in lower emergence m−2, delay in emergence, reduced leaf area, leaf area index, lower light interception and chlorophyll content. Maize hybrids (CS-200 and CS-220) exhibited maximum emergence m−2, days to emergence, leaf area, chlorophyll content and light interception. At all zones (Karak, Peshawar and Swat) early sowing of maize hybrids (25th May to 15th June) is recommended for maintaining proper emergence parameters and improved leaf configuration for efficient resources utilization.  相似文献

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) productivity in India is low, because of many problems beset in its cultivation. One of the serious problems are weeds. Groundnut yield losses due to weeds have been estimated as high as 24 to 70 percent. This has created a scope for using herbicides in groundnut crop. A field investigation was carried out during kharif (rainy) season of 2001-2002 on a sandy loam soil at College Agronomy Farm, B.A. College of Agriculture, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand, India to study the effect of weed management practices and Rhizobium inoculation on growth and yield of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). Ten weed control treatments, comprising four treatments of sole application of fluchloralin, pendimethalin, butachlor and metolachlor, respectively each applied at 1.0 kg ha(-1); four treatments comprising of an application of the same herbicides at the same levels coupled with one hand weeding at 30 DAS; one weed-free treatment (hand weedings at 15, 30, 45 DAS); and one unweeded control. All 10 treatmets were combined with and without Rhizobium inoculation (i.e. a total of 20 treatment combinations) under a factorial randomized complete block design (FRBD) with four replications. Minimum weed dry matter accumulation (70 kg/ha) with higher weed control efficiency (90.70%) was recorded under an integrated method i.e. pendimethalin at 1.0 kg ha(-1) + hand weeding at 30 DAS, which also resulted in maximum pod yield (1773.50 kg ha(-1)). This treatment was comparable to fluchloralin applied at 1.0 kg ha(-1) combined with hand- weeding at 30 DAS. Weedy conditions in the unweeded control treatment reduced pod yield by 29.90-35.95% as compared to integrated method. Significantly higher pod yield was obtained with Rhizobium inoculation than the mean value of all treatments without inoculation. For most agronomical parameters examined, Rhizobium inoculation and weed control treatments were independent in their effect.  相似文献

Mycoherbicides are specialty biotechnology products which employ the use of fungi or fungal metabolites as non-chemical alternatives, thereby reducing the input of harmful chemicals to control noxious weeds. The present communication emphasises the potential of an indigenous isolate of Alternaria alternata ITCC 4896 as a mycoherbicide for the global weed Parthenium hysterophorus. Of the various spore concentrations tested by in vitro detached leaf bioassay, 1 × 106 spores/ml was the most effective, inducing 89.2% leaf area damage on the seventh day and was further tested by the whole plant bioassay. Both in vitro detached leaf assay and whole plant bioassay exhibited a similar trend in disease development, exhibiting 50% damage at 96 hours post-treatment. However, 100% mortality was observed in the whole plant bioassay on the seventh day. This is the very first report on the bioweedicidal potential of Alternaria alternata ITCC 4896 (LC#508) for use as a mycoherbicide for Parthenium hysterophorus.  相似文献

Based on concerns that useful weed diversity in agroecosystems as well as associated traditional knowledge may be declining due to agricultural intensification and indiscriminate eradication of weeds, we studied weed diversity and use by local ethnic groups in tea plantations in northern Thailand under different agricultural intensities and landscape complexities, namely agroforestry, organic, and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) based conventional system. In each system, we sampled five tea plantations using belt-transects of 25 m2. Use data were collected through interviews with specialist informants. We recorded 214 weed species (gamma-diversity) of which 66 were useful. Agroforestry system had the highest alpha- and beta-weed diversity, suggesting that the low agricultural intensity and high landscape complexity in this system is associated with higher weed diversity in tea plantations. The common weed species were clearly different in the three systems and only a small fraction (22 species) of widespread weeds was shared among them, resulting in low weed similarity between systems. The 66 useful species of weeds were mostly for food and medicine. Uses of some weeds were shared between systems. Many of the useful weeds are invasive species, suggesting that they are prevalent and inexpensive plant resources for rural people and could represent alternative resources in the future. Because the occurrence of invasive weeds may affect the natural habitats of the native flora, integrating the exploitation of weeds into weed management strategies may reduce the weed population while sustaining agrobiodiversity and conserving associated traditional knowledge in the long term.  相似文献

The invasive weed, parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) (Asteraceae: tribe Heliantheae), damages agriculture, adversely impacts biodiversity and is hazardous to human and animal health in Ethiopia. The host range of two natural enemies, a leaf-feeding beetle, Zygogramma bicolorata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and a stem-boring weevil, Listronotus setosipennis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was evaluated for biological control of the weed in Ethiopia. The specificity of Z. bicolorata and L. setosipennis was assessed against 29 and 31 non-target plant species, respectively. The host range of Z. bicolorata and L. setosipennis was first assessed using no-choice tests to examine their oviposition and feeding response on non-target plants. Although oviposition by Z. bicolorata occurred on six non-target species in four Asteraceae species in no-choice tests, it was significantly lower than on parthenium and no larvae developed. Zygogramma bicolorata nibbled the leaves of one of the five niger seed (Guizotia abyssinica L. – an oil seed crop closely related to parthenium) cultivars tested, but feeding and oviposition were significantly less than on parthenium. Furthermore, choice tests indicated that Z. bicolorata did not oviposit nor feed on G. abyssinica when parthenium was present. In no-choice tests, L. setosipennis did not oviposit on any of the non-target species assessed. Mean oviposition on parthenium was 39.0?±?3.4 eggs per plant whereas no eggs were laid on any of the 31 species tested. Based on these and other host range tests, permission was obtained to field release Z. bicolorata and L. setosipennis in Ethiopia.  相似文献

Predictable risk to native plants in weed biological control   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Data on field host use of 112 insects, 3 fungi, 1 mite, and 1 nematode established for biological control of weeds in Hawaii, the continental United States, and the Caribbean indicate that the risk to native flora can be judged reliably before introduction. Virtually all risk is borne by native plant species that are closely related to target weeds. Fifteen species of insects introduced for biological control use 41 native plant species; 36 of which are congeneric with target weeds, while 4 others belong to two closely allied genera. Only 1 of 117 established biological organisms uses a native plant unrelated to the target weed. Thus the elements of protection for the native flora are the selection of weed targets that have few or no native congeners and the introduction of biological control organisms with suitably narrow diets.  相似文献

This study reports the results of vermicomposting with Eisenia fetida of Parthenium hysterophorus mixed with cow dung in different ratios (25%, 50% and 75%) in a 18 weeks experiment. In all the treatments, a decrease in pH, OCtotal and C:N ratio, but increase in EC, Ntotal, Paval, Catotal, Ktotal and heavy metals was recorded. The cocoons production and growth rate (biomass gain worm−1 day−1) were maximum in 100% cow dung. The results indicated that parthenium can be a raw material for vermicomposting if mix with cow dung in appropriate quantity.  相似文献

Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a satisfactory potential candidate for controlling Parthenium hysterophorus L. The study was conducted in order to evaluate the bio-control potential of Z. bicolorata to satisfactory reduced the density of parthenium weed in natural field conditions. Therefore, beetles were released in the twelve study sites @ 12 adults and/or larvae/m2 in their respective sites on 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th day after initial field releases. Observations were made on defoliation by the beetle, perthenium plant height, plant biomass, leaf injury rating and soil seed reservoir. Present study showed that field releases of Z. bicolorata considerably lowering down the parthenium density at all treated sites. At larval release sites by the 60th day of observation a complete defoliation was noted, however at adult release sites it took 80 days for complete defoliation. Moreover, significantly higher number of developmental stages i.e. eggs, larvae and adults were noted in the adults released sites than to larval released sites and the controls. It was also noted that plant height and its density, flowers & leaves production, biomass of parthenium plant and seed reservoir in soil was negatively affected in treated sites as compared to untreated sites. Thus, we have concluded that adults can be utilized in biocontrol program because population build-up was greater in those sites where adults were released.  相似文献

Parthenium hysterophorous (L) is a perennial weed distributed all over the country. Carbonized parthenium activated with conc. H2SO4 and ammonium persulphate was effective in the removal of dyes, heavy metals and phenols. Variation in the percentage removal of adsorbates was observed with increase in the contact time. Among the adsorbates tested, the affinity of the activated parthenium carbon was highest for Hg2+, Methylene Blue and Malachite Green.  相似文献
