Synopsis Prey selection by underyearling bream and roach was studied in both the laboratory and field. When presented with cladoceran and a more elusive copepod prey both fish species select against copepods, regardless of the relative prey sizes. However, the field diet of bream, but not roach, consistently includes a large proportion of copepods. The explanation for this discrepancy lies in the timing and location of foraging in the field. Bream foraging, unlike that of roach, is largely restricted to the hours of darkness and to the lowest stratum of the lake. The Microcrustacea of this stratum is depleted of cladocerans at night, because of vertical migration, and is relatively rich in copepods.  相似文献

Feeding selectivity and efficiency of young-of-the-year European perch and roach were compared under field and laboratory conditions. In laboratory experiments, the importance of prey evasiveness versus prey movement conspicuousness for fish selectivity was evaluated with respect to changing Cladocera/Copepoda prey ratio. Feeding efficiency was additionally investigated in relation to feeding time (5, 10, 20 min) and prey density (approx. 50, 200, 700 ind. L−1). In Říov Reservoir, the diet of both fish species was nearly exclusively composed of crustacean zooplankton. In roach, diet shifted from rotifers and bosminids in May, towards Daphnia sp. and Leptodora kindtii in June and July. Daphnia contributed almost exclusively to the roach diet since June, composing on average more than 94% of total prey. Cyclopoid copepods, occurred in the roach’s diet only on the first sampling date; later on both cyclopoid and calanoid copepods were completely absent. On the other hand, copepods played an important role in the diet of perch. In early and mid-June when their share in the zooplankton was particularly high, copepods contributed by more than 50% to the diet of perch. Although their contribution dropped with their decline in zooplankton in June/July, by the end of July they again comprised about one third of perch’s diet. In both fish species, the increase in numbers of cladocerans in their diet was related to increase in SL. In roach, the numbers of consumed prey were doubled every twenty days during the investigated period. In perch the increase was not so consistent, but significantly higher efficiency of perch was reported on three out of six sampling dates. In laboratory experiments, roach showed a distinct avoidance for copepods and a preference for cladocerans. Both prey categories were only fed non-selectively when they dominated the prey mixture. Perch selectivity was more diversified. Contrary to roach, perch were fed copepods non-selectively on a balanced prey ratio. Further, with an increasing share of Cladocera, a situation resembling that of roach and Copepoda was avoided. However, when the share of copepods in the prey mixture dropped below ten percent, they were consumed non-selectively and with their ongoing decline in the prey mixture their preference even increased. Feeding efficiency differed significantly between perch and roach when foraging on copepods exclusively or on a prey mixture where copepods predominated. In the short time feeding experiment (5 min) with copepods, perch consumed on average 5.9 times more prey than roach. Although roach increased their success with increasing time it was still 1.7 times greater than for perch in the long time feeding experiment (20 min). Total numbers of prey consumed were positively affected by prey density and feeding time. With increasing feeding time, the consumption rate generally declined. With a fourfold increase in feeding time, the numbers of consumed prey increased on average only two times. Only in roach feeding on copepods did the numbers of prey consumed per minute of feeding increase with increasing feeding time. However, the overall numbers were low. Differences in feeding selectivity and efficiency between perch and roach juveniles were found to be significant both in the field and laboratory experiments. In roach, selectivity was determined solely by prey evasiveness. By contrast, perch’s selectivity was influenced by prey movement conspicuousness; prey escape abilities did not play an important role. Perch were more efficient foragers on evasive prey, but its feeding efficiency for non-evasive prey was not lower than that of roach. According to our observations, we suggest feeding behaviour to be responsible for the roach’s inefficiency in capturing evasive copepods.  相似文献

Sampling of the fish community was carried out for 20 years in the Mirgenbach reservoir, in North-Eastern France. The prevalence and the mean intensity of Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda) were analysed in roach (Rutilus rutilus) and silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna) populations, the main two infected species. The aim of this study was to investigate the host switch from roach to silver bream and the consequences of L. intestinalis infestation in silver bream, which is an unusual host for this parasite as Ligula parasitism in silver bream appears to be rare. We analysed in detail the relationships between parasitism index (PI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), perivisceral fat abundance (PFA) and condition index (CI) in the silver bream population. In 1998, prevalence of L. intestinalis highlighted a clear host switch from roach to silver bream. In the silver bream population, young fish were the most severely infected and the impact of plerocercoids appeared to be different depending on the host sex. In male silver bream, plerocercoids drew energy from fat reserves even if GSI was also slightly impacted. On the contrary, in females energy was diverted from gonad maturation rather than from perivisceral fat reserves. No significant difference was observed in terms of CI in either sex.  相似文献

Roach, rudd, bream and their natural hybrids of 2 cm standard length or larger can be definitively identified by their enzyme electrophoretic patterns. Zymograms of lactate dehydrogenase and esterases as produced by vertical starch gel electrophoretic analysis of whole fry or adult eye extracts are the most useful in this respect. The lactate dehydrogenase isozymes, containing B sub-units, migrate more anodally in rudd and bream than in roach. Due to the tetrameric structure of lactate dehydrogenase, in hybrid rudd x roach and roach x bream, eleven isozymes can be observed as compared with six in the parental patterns. Esterases show unique patterns for all species and hybrids. With the exception of one fraction in rudd x bream, the esterase patterns of hybrids show summations of the parental phenotypes.  相似文献

Hybrids between bream, Abramis brama , and roach, Rutilus rutilus , occur in the lower reaches of the River Exe and were positively identified by their meristic features and shape of the pharyngeal bone. The growth of bream and hybrids was determined by back-calculation from scales. Annual checks were laid down in early June. The mean length for age of female bream was significantly larger than that of males for fish 6 years of age and older. This divergence in growth rate was associated with the sexual maturation of the fish. Data for the sexes were combined and compared with the growth rate of hybrids and roach from the same region. Hybrid growth was similar to that of bream for the first 6 years of life but was intermediate between that of the two parent species in the older age groups. Some hybrids with developing gonads were found. A change in the diet of bream from planktonic feeding to a benthophagic habit with age was noted. Detritus, substrate and chironomid larvae formed the bulk of the diet of hybrids.  相似文献

In ten 0.1 ha drainable ponds O+ cyprinids were stocked to assess their impact on the aquatic community. Bream and roach were stocked in early June, 1986, and carp in early July, 1986. The ponds were drained mid November, 1986. The relationship between the fish community and its food resource was estimated in terms of production and consumption with use of the data on growth and mortality of the fish. The average gross production of the fish species in the ten ponds (48.4 kg during the experiment) was dominated by the carp (58.5%). A minimum estimate of the food consumption of the O+ cyprinids is 760 kJ.m–2. The average production of bream and roach was much lower than that of carp due to a higher mortality and a more specialized feeding pattern. The gross productions of carp, bream and roach in the ten ponds were not significantly related, although stomach analysis showed diet overlap between the carp and the bream.  相似文献

Enclosures (17 m3) were used in the mesotrophic area of Lake Balaton to determine the impact of benthivorous bream (Abramis brama L.) on the lower trophic levels during summers of 1984–86. In enclosures with a fish biomass similar to the biomass in the eutrophic area of the lake, the number of phytoplankton species was highest. In enclosures with a low fish biomass the phytoplankton was dominated by the greens. A high biomass of bream in the mesotrophic basin caused bacterial production corresponding to that of the eutrophic part of the lake. Crustaceans were dominated by copepods and were unable to control phytoplankton peaks. Bottom-up effects of bream were more obvious than top-down effects and seem to be more important in the possible control of water quality.  相似文献

Development of fish communities in lakes after biomanipulation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Biomanipulation measures in the Netherlands are usually a combination of a drastic fish stock reduction and an introduction of pike fingerlings. In three small shallow lakes (Noorddiep, Bleiswijkse Zoom and Zwemlust) these measures resulted in a clear water state and the development of macrophytes. After the measures the fish community developed differently because of the new physical and biological conditions. Results of lake Noorddiep and lake Bleiswijkse Zoom showed that the fish community became more divers. Bream and carp became less dominant and were partly replaced by roach and perch. The importance of the main predator pike-perch was strongly reduced and replaced by pike and perch. The share of piscivorous fish in the total fish stock increased at all sites. The recruitment of young-of-the-year was similar or even higher in the clear overgrown areas than in the turbid water before the measures, but the recruitment of young-of-the-year to older fish differed between the species. Predation by pike and perch could not control the young-of-the-year cyprinids, but their predation may have contributed to the shift from bream to roach, because of selective predation on bream in the open water, while roach was hiding in the vegetation. The macrophytes provide new refugia and feeding conditions that favour roach and perch, but offer relatively poor survival conditions for bream and carp.  相似文献

Feeding of fish in Lake Glubokoe   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
O. S. Boikova 《Hydrobiologia》1986,141(1-2):95-111
Lake Glubokoe is inhabited by 13 species of fish. The commonest are roach, bream, perch and ruff. Comparison of seine catches for 1950 and 1984 revealed a considerable decrease in the share of perch (from 31% to 2%) and ruff (from 18.5 to less than 0.1%) in 1984. The richest food resource in the lake is crustacean plankton. In summer, it is mostly consumed by roach. Estimation of the electivity shows that, unlike perch, roach selectively consumes small crustaceans (Bosmina and Polyphemus). Poor growth rate of all common species of fish points to their food limitation. In summer the diets of common species of fish are differentiated to a considerable extent. Of 36 pairs of combinations a high food overlap was found only in 2 cases: 1) O + perch and Leucaspius delineatus, 2) yearlings and adult roach. Low diet overlap in fish during intensive feeding in summer probably reflects a feedback between the volume and intensity of food competition. The populations of bream and ruff probably compete for chironomid larvae which inhabit the sublittoral, as perch, roach and Leucaspius delineatus probably do for large littoral insects. However, intraspecific competition appears to be more important than interspecific for the roach and bream populations (the two most numerous species in the lake).  相似文献

In the highly eutrophic lake, Frederiksborg Slotssø, the diet composition of the bream (Abramis brama L.) and roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) populations was examined during three periods with different food availability. The length range of bream and roach was 9–34 cm (TL) and 5–18 cm (TL), respectively. The relative food composition was examined for 2 cm and 1 cm length intervals of bream and roach, respectively. During all three periods, bream shifted from benthic cladocerans (Alona sp.) to zooplankton and chironomids within a transitional length of 15.0–20.0 cm. These foodshifts were coupled with a change in feeding behaviour from particulate to filter feeding. The biomass of chironomids was too low to sustain the consumption of larger bream (>20.0 cm) which initiated feeding in the pelagic zone even in periods when the mean length and biomass of the preferred zooplankton, Daphnia cucullata, were low. In contrast to bream, roach fed mainly on zooplankton. With increasing size, roach progressively shifted to larger zooplankton species due to the increasing mesh size of their branchial system. The importance of benthic animals in the diet of roach was minor due to low feeding efficiency on prey buried in the sediment. Detritus appeared in the diet of bream and roach in periods of low availability of animal food items. Feeding on detritus may provide an energetic advantage to bream and roach and increase the carrying capacity for these species in lakes, where detritus is highly abundant. Especially for the larger fish due to the decrease in their relative metabolic demands. However, the ability of bream to filter feed and with increasing size to retain food items smaller than those retained by roach may be the main mechanism for the dominance of bream over roach in highly eutrophic lakes.

The distribution and diet of age 0+ fish were studied in the deep canyon‐shaped Římov Reservoir (Czech Republic), which is characterized by a longitudinal trophic gradient. During late summer of two years, 0+ fish were sampled from inshore and offshore habitats along the longitudinal reservoir axis. Offshore catches of 0+ fish from the surface layer were dominated by roach (Rutilus rutilus ), bream (Abramis brama ) and perch (Perca fluviatilis ), whereas in the deeper open water perch predominated. Inshore catches of 0+ fish were constituted mainly by perch and roach. The proportions of roach in the inshore catches were highest at the upper and most eutrophic part of the reservoir, whereas the proportions of perch in the inshore catches were higher at the downstream areas. Total catches of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish increased upstream in the reservoir. Offshore 0+ perch were of consistently smaller size than inshore 0+ perch. Inshore 0+ perch had significantly smaller size at the upstream reservoir part than at the downstream, more lacustrine regions. The diet of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish consisted predominantly of crustacean zooplankton. Perch diet was generally dominated both by cladocerans and copepods, whereas roach diet consisted chiefly of cladocerans. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In the River Great Ouse, 0+ roach, bream, chub, bleak and gudgeon were each divided into three' ecospecies' on the basis of their morphology: young larvae, old larvae and juveniles. Ecologically similar species were positively associated and dissimilar species were negatively associated. All ecospecies, except juvenile bleak preferred water < 1 m deep, within 6 m of the bank with some plant cover. Habitat use was similar for all species. It is suggested that this habitat offers increased growth rate, reduced predation risk and increased food abundance to all species, and that species overlap is due to complementary habitat use rather than aggregation. During the early larval period all species fed predominantly upon rotifers and diatoms. During the late larval period there was a switch to Cladocera, primarily Chydoridae and Ceriodaphnia sp., and chironomid larvae. Species-specific dietary selection was evident during the juvenile period, with roach feeding primarily upon aufwuchs, bream upon Cladocera, chub upon Diptera, and gudgeon upon Copepoda.  相似文献

The total amylolytic activity and activity of alkaline phosphatase in the intestine mucosa of larvae and fries of roach, blue bream, and perch change both during the process of individual development and during the day. Maximal intensities of juvenile feeding was observed primarily in the morning and evening hours. The pattern of diurnal alkaline phosphatase activity correlates to a greater extent to intensity of juvenile feeding, in comparison to the pattern of total amylolytic activity. In planktivorous blue bream, such regularity is more pronounced than in benthivorous roach. The total amylolytic activity in fries of roach, blue bream and perch correlates to fish type of feeding.  相似文献

Adult roach, bream and their presumed F1 hybrid from an Anglian Water reservoir were identified on the basis of morphological and meristic characteristics. The hybrid was clearly intermediate. Four hybrid breeding crosses were induced to spawn by hypophysis. A bream × roach cross (female named first) failed to produce fertile eggs, whereas F1 hybrid × roach, roach × F1 hybrid and F1 hybrid × F1 hybrid all produced fry. Fertility (defined as survival of eggs to hatching) was high for the F1 hybrid × roach back-cross (56%) but low for the others (<2%), in comparison to the pure species controls (roach 69%, bream 76%). Progeny from these crosses were reared until anal fin rays could be counted. These counts indicated intermediacy between the parents and back-crossed individuals, and similarity between F1 hybrids and their F2 progeny.  相似文献

The effect of feeding behaviour on the prey capture efficiency of young-of-the-year European perch and roach was investigated in laboratory experiments using planktonic crustaceans possessing different escape abilities—Daphnia sp. and Cyclops sp. Two sets of experiments were performed. In the first set, the feeding efficiency and behaviour of 270 fish individuals were determined by stomach content analyses and video record evaluations. In the second set of experiments, analysis of attack-effort, which was evaluated as attack-distance and repeated strikes, was undertaken. Except for situations in which Daphnia was offered at high densities, the feeding efficiency of perch was significantly higher compared to roach in all other combinations of prey types and densities. Roach consumed significantly less prey compared to perch when feeding exclusively on the evasive Cyclops and when it was offered in a 1:1 ratio mixture with Daphnia. The mean swimming speed was similar in both fish species, but behavioural differences were evident during prey search and capture. Perch swam through the aquaria in short and fast movements that were interrupted by many stops. Roach exhibited rather continuous swimming that was punctuated by slowdowns instead of stops. The perch attacks were very intensive and repeated strikes occurred, particularly when feeding on evasive Cyclops. On the other hand, roach revealed strong schooling behaviour restricting the fish during inspection of the experimental aquaria. The distinct differences in feeding efficiency between perch and roach were demonstrated to be closely related to differences in their feeding behaviour. Discontinuous searching for prey, vigorous attacks, occurrence of repeated strikes and the absence of schooling increased perch prey capture efficiency, particularly when foraging on evasive copepods.  相似文献

A selection of neoplasias in feral fish is described. It includes olfactory glioma in coalfish, Pollachius virens L.; nephroblastoma with metastases and polycystic kidneys in crucian carp, Carassius carassius; lymphosarcoma in roach, Rutilus rutilus , and bream, Abramis bratna; and stomato-papilloma in eel, Anguilla anguilla . The olfactory glioma is one of a few recordings of a central nervous system-derived tumour in teleosts. Although nephroblastoma is relatively common in fish, rarely have metastases been observed. The lymphosarcomas in roach and bream have not been recorded before in the British Isles, but now stomato-papillomas in eel appear to be established at a low level.  相似文献

The food, growth and abundance of five co-existing cyprinid fish species in the eutrophic Lake Hiidenvesi were studied. The diet overlaps within the cyprinid community in shallow lake basins were compared with those in a deep basin, where littoral resources are less available. Roach, bleak and white bream inhabited both the shallow and the deep parts of the lake. Their growth rate was slow, probably due to the low availability of animal food, indicated by the increasing proportion of detritus and plant material in the diets towards the end of the summer. In the deep basin, roach and bleak, contrary to white bream, did not forage on the very abundant invertebrate Chaoborus flavicans, explained by the migration behaviour of C. flavicans. Blue bream, unlike other cyprinids, utilized copepods and had a relatively fast growth rate, but was mostly restricted to the shallow areas. The condition of the bream stock was weak both in terms of growth and abundance. The availability of zoobenthos was low and bream was not able to compete for zooplankton with the more specialized planktivores.  相似文献

The fish community in Tjeukemeer was monitored from 1971 to 1988 by trawling, and during the summer of 1988 the distribution of the more abundant species was determined in relation to size and location. Bream, pikeperch and smelt were the most dominant fishes, whereas roach, white bream, perch and ruffe comprised <10% of the total catches. After the termination in 1977 of the intensive gillnet fishery both pikeperch >50 cm and bream >30 cm increased in biomass, but roach >15 cm and perch >15 cm virtually disappeared and pikeperch <50 cm substantially decreased. Only smelt, ruffe, white bream and bream <30 cm hardly changed in biomass. Bream, pikeperch, perch and smelt were restricted to the open water zone, but roach <15 cm and 0 + bream were confined to the littoral zone. White bream and ruffe did not show a distinct habitat preference. Because the recruitment of smelt is largely dependent on immigration from the IJsselmeer, a feed-back between the smelt and pikeperch population is lacking. Because the carrying capacity of the pikeperch population is mainly determined by smelt, the other fish <15 cm are very vulnerable to predation when the smelt population is consumed, before a new year-class of smelt is recruited, or when the smelt fails to recruit. The vulnerability to predation of the different species and their feeding habits are discussed in relation to their distribution.  相似文献

Thirty-six enclosures, surface area 4 m2, were placed in Little Mere, a shallow fertile lake in Cheshire, U.K. The effects of different fish species (common carp, common bream, tench and roach) of zooplanktivorous size, and their biomass (0, 200 and 700 kg ha–1) on water chemistry, zooplankton and phytoplankton communities were investigated. Fish biomass had a strong effect on mean zooplankton size and abundance. When fish biomass rose, larger zooplankters were replaced by more numerous smaller zooplankters. Consequently phytoplankton abundance rose in the presence of higher densities of zooplanktivorous fish, as zooplankton grazing was reduced. Fish species were also significant in determining zooplankton community size structure. In enclosures with bream there were significantly greater densities of small zooplankters than in enclosures stocked with either carp, tench and, in part, roach. When carp or roach were present, the phytoplankton had a greater abundance of Cyanophyta than when bream or tench were present. Whilst top-down effects of fish predation controlled the size partitioning of the zooplankton community, this, in turn apparently controlled the bottom-up regeneration of nutrients for the phytoplankton community. At the zooplankton–phytoplankton interface, both top-down and bottom-up processes were entwined in a reciprocal feedback mechanism with the extent and direction of that relationship altered by changes in fish species. This has consequences for the way that top-down and bottom-up processes are generalised.  相似文献
