The most recent major advances in the study of programmed cell death (PCD) in plants include the observation that peptide inhibitors of caspases inhibit the hypersensitive response. Nitric oxide has been shown to be required for the induction of disease related PCD. Mutant analysis has led to the cloning of the first genes involved in PCD related disease resistance, LSD1 and MLO.  相似文献

Forging ahead     
A large percentage of the world’s population have seen science fiction movies depicting biometric systems that can be circumvented by criminals using sophisticated devices. Such misleading information may prove to be a box office winner, but it can lead to a high amount of confusion about how a biometric device assesses whether a person is who he or she claims to be. While the marketing departments of many biometrics companies address the PR issues associated with inaccurate information, the technical divisions are also working hard to eliminate problems associated with ‘live and well’ checks. However, to my knowledge, in spite of the steps taken by many fingerprint companies, no fingerprint system — currently on the market — is 100% foolproof.  相似文献

Although laboratory dependence is an acknowledged problem in microbiology, it is seldom intensively studied or discussed. We demonstrate that laboratory dependence is real and quantifiable even in the popular model Escherichia coli. Here laboratory effects alter the equilibrium composition of a simple community composed of two strains of E. coli. Our data rule out changes in the bacterial strains, chemical batches, and human handling but implicate differences in growth medium, especially the water component.  相似文献

The centromere is a specialised region of the eukaryotic chromosome that directs the equal segregation of sister chromatids into two daughter cells during mitosis. In mitosis, the kinetochores mediate (1) microtubule capture and chromosome alignment at a metaphase plate; (2) the correction of improper microtubule attachments; (3) the maintenance of an active checkpoint until bi-orientation is achieved by the whole complement of chromosomes; (4) the establishment of tension within the centromere which, in turn, contributes to silencing of the spindle checkpoint and triggers the onset of anaphase. In this review, we will analyse how centromeres are organised with respect to chromatin types and arrangements.  相似文献
