Recent studies have revealed increasing numbers of benthic invertebrate species producing pelagic larvae in Antarctic waters. This paper investigates temporal changes in larval abundance in shallow areas of Admiralty Bay. Plankton was collected from December to May of 2000/2001 and 2001/2002. Air and water temperature and solar radiation were significantly higher during the second year, characterising three seasonal periods early summer, late summer and early winter. Mean meroplankton abundance was 160 and 1,548 in d.100 m−3 for the first and second years, respectively. Mollusc veligers were dominant in both years. Analysis of variance showed that in 2001 veligers were present in the early winter and in 2002 they were synchronous with the late summer phytoplankton bloom; polychaetes and trochophors were concentrated in the early winter, while echinoderms and nemerteans were abundant in early summer. These results showed the importance of seasonality (i.e. a combination of air and water temperature, solar radiation and food supply) to the reproductive events of an Antarctic coastal nearshore environment.  相似文献

The pelagic eggs, yolk-sac and pelagic larvae of the macrourid fish, Coryphaenoides marginatus, from Suruga Bay in southern Japan, are described. The identification of the pelagic eggs based on 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequences agreed with that obtained from morphological analyses. The spherical eggs, 1.14–1.30 mm in diameter, contained a single oil globule 0.30–0.38 mm in diameter, and had hexagonally patterned ornamentation on the chorion, 0.025–0.033 mm in width. Many melanophores were present on the anterodorsal region of the embryo after the caudal end had detached from the yolk. Within a day after hatching, each of the yolk-sac larvae had a body axis that was bent slightly at the anterior trunk region, many dorsal and lateral melanophores on the trunk plus several on the gut, and small irregular wrinkles on the dorsal and anal fin membranes. The pelagic larvae had a short caudal region in comparison to other known congeners (length 2.0–3.2+ times head length vs. 4–7, respectively), a short stalked pectoral fin base, and no elongate first dorsal and pelvic fin rays. They were further characterized by the presence of numerous very dense melanophores from just behind the eye to the anterior part of the caudal region at 5.1 mm head length (25.8+ mm total length). The significant difference in vertical distribution between the pelagic eggs and larvae (dominant depths ca. 200–350 m vs. ca. 10–100 m, respectively), with no subsequent collection of pelagic larvae with greater than 6 mm head length, indicate two stages (rising and falling) of ontogenic vertical migration.  相似文献

During three last larval instars of Barathra brassicae the alanine aminotransferase activity pattern exhibits two maxima which do not correspond with the maxima of activity of phosphatases and proteases. In the larvae infected by Nosema plodiae a different course of activity can be seen from the 5th day of infection. The activity pattern in the diseased larvae rises above that of a normal larva by 90% shortly before the last molt and reaches a maximum at the end of normal larval development. Alanine aminotransferase in the gut and in the fat body exhibits two main pH optima of activity, 8.0 and 9.5, respectively, and a low activity peak at pH 4.5. This last activity is not present in diseased animals. The temperature and pH inactivation are also described.  相似文献

Based on materials from plankton surveys carried out in 2004–2009, the period of occurrence, density, and distribution of larvae of three commercial species of crabs in the Peter the Great bay and adjacent areas of Sea of Japan were studied. The larvae of the horsehair crab Erimacrus isenbeckii (Brandt, 1848) occurred in the plankton from mid-March to early June, within the range of water temperature from −1 to 10.8°C. The larvae of the helmet crab Telmessus cheiragonus (Tilesius, 1812) appeared in the plankton in mid-April and occurred to the end of June within the temperature range from 2.8 to 13.0°C. The larvae of the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio (O. Fabricius, 1788) appeared in the plankton in mid-April as well, but some individuals sporadically occurred until early August. All the species of crabs produced one generation of larvae for their reproduction season. The terms of larval stay in plankton depended on water temperature and the duration of the pelagic period increased in colder years. In that area, the larvae of C. opilio were the most abundant (up to 41 ind./m3) and the zoea density of horsehair and helmet crabs was significantly lower (no more than 2 ind./m3). The larvae of C. opilio occurred over the entire area of the Peter the Great bay; the greatest aggregations of their early stages were observed in its southwestern open part. The maximum density of E. isenbeckii zoea was recorded in the south of the Amursky bay and in the Posyet bay. Individual larvae of T. cheiragonus occurred in the Posyet bay and in the southern part of the Amursky and Ussuriisky bays. The late-stage larvae of all crab species were concentrated in areas of the coastal circulation.  相似文献

Thermal tolerance limits of marine intertidal zone organisms are elevated compared to subtidal species, but are typically just slightly higher than maximal habitat temperatures. The small thermal safety margins maintained by intertidal zone organisms suggest that high thermal tolerance is associated with a physiological cost. If true, we hypothesize that species that transition between intertidal zone and planktonic habitats during ontogeny, will adjust their thermal tolerance accordingly to capitalize upon potential energy savings while in a thermally benign habitat. We tested this hypothesis in porcelain crabs that transition between the thermally stressful, intertidal zone as embryos, to the thermally benign pelagic zone as larvae, and back at settlement. We found the more thermally tolerant, mid-intertidal zone species, Petrolisthes cinctipes, and the less thermally tolerant, subtidal zone species, Petrolisthes manimacilis, exhibited reduced thermal tolerance (LT50) in the transition from embryos to larvae. This was associated with an increased oxygen consumption rate in both species, though P. cinctipes exhibited a significantly greater increase in oxygen consumption. P. cinctipes also showed an increase in thermal tolerance in settled juveniles compared to pelagic zoea I larvae, resulting in an overall V-shaped thermal tolerance relationship during ontogeny, while in P. manimaculis thermal tolerance was significantly lower in juveniles compared to zoea I. In neither species were these changes (zoea I to juvenile) associated with a significant change in metabolism. While embryos and juveniles of P. cinctipes have thermal tolerance limits near intertidal habitat thermal maxima (∼32.5 °C), all three life-history stages in P. manimaculis (especially embryos and larvae) exhibit considerable thermal safety margins. The mechanisms underlying this “excess” thermal tolerance in P. manimacilis embryos are unknown, but suggest that patterns of thermal tolerance in early life history stages are species-specific.  相似文献

The eggs, larvae and pelagic juveniles ofOstracion meleagris, Lactoria fornasini andLactoria diaphana were identified from reared and field collected specimens from Hawaii, Japan, Australia and the eastern Pacific. Eggs are large and pelagic with limited chorion ornamentation and a cluster of oil droplets. At hatching, larvae are well developed, rotund, and enclosed in a dermal sac. The sac disappears and dermal plates form prior to notochord flexion. Larvae of the three species can be distinguished by their pigment patterns and development of the carapace of ossified dermal plates. Eggs of the three species could not be distinguished. The larval stage ends at a small size (< 6 mm) but the juveniles may grow to a substantial size while remaining pelagic.L. diaphana matures and spawns while pelagic in the eastern Pacific.  相似文献

Hox genes are noted for their roles in specifying axial identity in bilateral forms. In the radial echinoderms, the axis whose identity Hox genes might specify remains unclear. From the expression of Hox genes in the development of the sea urchin Holopneustes purpurescens reported here and that reported previously, we clarify the axis that might be specified by Hox genes in echinoderms. The expression of HpHox11/13 here is described at three developmental stages. The expression is around the rim of the blastopore in gastrulae, in the archenteron wall and adjacent mesoderm in early vestibula larvae, and in a patch of mesoderm close to the archenteron wall in later vestibula larvae. The retained expression of HpHox11/13 in the patch of mesoderm in the later vestibula larvae is, we suggest, indicative of a posterior or an aboral growth zone. The expression of HpHox3 at the echinoid-rudiment stage, in contrast, is in oral mesoderm beneath the epineural folds, concentrated in sites where the first three adult spines form. With the expression of HpHox5 and HpHox11/13 reported previously, the expressions here support the role of Hox genes in specifying oral–aboral identity in echinoderms. How such specification and a posterior growth zone add support to a concept of the structural homology between echinoderms and chordates is discussed.  相似文献

The growth, reproductive phenology, and longevity of in situ populations of Fucus distichus L. ssp. edentatus (De la Pylaie) Powell and F. distichus L. ssp. evanescens (C. Agardh) Powell were evaluated in New England. Both subspecies exhibited maximum growth during early summer, a slight decline in late summer, and a brief resurgence in the early fall. The maximum growth rates (in terms of elongation) for F. distichus ssp. edentatus and ssp. evanescens were 3.5 and 3.7 cm/28 days, respectively. Populations of both subspecies showed a distinct bimodal reproductive periodicity, with maxima in the spring and fall. Even so, individuals were either reproductive in the spring or fall but never in both seasons. After reproduction, receptacles dehisced and plants either became vegetative or died. Higher rates of plant attrition were observed during periods of reproduction than during non-reproductive periods.  相似文献

The rearing of finfish larvae is a key element in their further culture. Improper breeding protocols may result in high mortality rates, body deformation and growth rate decreases in both the larval and fattening periods. These errors can be avoided by thorough exploration of various aspects of early larvae biology, at least in model fish species. In this study, anatomical and morphological developments were analysed using allometric growth patterns of common barbel, Barbus barbus, larvae reared under optimal controlled conditions. Larvae of common barbel, which is a model species for fish of the genus Barbus, were reared for 30 days at 25 °C in the recirculated aquaculture system (RAS). Four periods of the barbel larval development were identified: pre-flexion (0–5 days post hatching – DPH; total length – TL: 9.5 ± 0.3 to 12.3 ± 0.3 mm), flexion (6–11 DPH; TL 12.4 ± 0.3–15.4 ± 0.3 mm), post-flexion (12–21 DPH; TL 16.1 ± 0.5–21.2 ± 0.8 mm) and juvenile (from 22 DPH; TL from 21.4 ± 1.7 mm). The largest changes in barbel growth were observed during the first two periods of their life (pre-flexion and flexion), which resulted in the frequency of noted flexion points (64.3% flexion points) and was also associated with intensive morphometric growth, primarily the head and tail parts of the body. Despite a low degree of growth progress upon hatching (e.g. no eye pigment, no distinct liver or pancreas, no unobstructed alimentary tract), barbel larvae pass through the larval periods very quickly in comparison to other cyprinids and enter the juvenile period (22 days).  相似文献

Changes of the quantitative and qualitative composition of ichthyoplankton off Mauritania (21–16° N) in different seasons of 1997–2008 are analyzed. In this area, pelagic eggs and larvae of over 120 fish species belonging to 71 families are recorded. In warm periods, the fish of the tropical fauna intensively spawn off Mauritania; round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African horse mackerel Trachurus trecae, and jack mackerel Caranx rhonchus are dominant. In cold periods, active spawning of fish belonging to the tropical fauna is recorded, the most abundant are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, European horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish species is calculated on the basis of the quantity of eggs laid by females. Environmental factors control fluctuations of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the considered region.  相似文献

Demographic connectivity requires both the dispersal of individuals between sub-populations, and their subsequent contribution to population dynamics. For planktonic, non-feeding marine larvae, the capacity to delay settlement enables greater dispersal distances, but the energetic cost of delayed settlement has been shown to adversely impact post-settlement fitness in several taxa. Here, we assess whether delayed settlement influences mortality rates or growth rates for the first 6 weeks following settlement of the scleractinian coral, Acropora tenuis. Coral larvae that were settled at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after spawning, and then deployed in the field, showed negligible effects of delayed settlement on post-settlement survival and time to initial budding for colony formation. Between-cohort differences in budding rate appeared to be explained by temporal variation in the post-settlement acquisition of zooxanthellae. The potential for coral larvae to remain in the pelagic zone for increased periods of time with little to no effect on post-settlement survival and growth suggests that the capacity for delayed settlement is likely to have meaningful demographic consequences for broadcast-spawning reef-building corals, and that the predicted trade-off between delayed settlement and post-settlement fitness is less applicable to reef-building scleractinian corals than other taxa with non-feeding larvae.  相似文献

Myzus persicae (Sulzer) at different densities (1 to 120 aphids) on a paprika plant in a 1.8 dm3 cage were exposed at 21°C to single females of the parasitoidEphedrus cerasicola Stary. Three different exposure periods were used: 1 hr, 6 hrs, 24 hrs. The aphids were dissected 6 days after parasitization. Superparasitism was measured as number of hosts superparasitized and number of parasitoid larvae per aphid. It attained a maximum around host density=5 and decreased with increasing host density and decreasing exposure time. Almost no superparasitism occurred during the 1st hour. A non-random larval distribution indicated thatE. cerasicola discriminates between unparasitized and parasitized aphids, but probably not between aphids with different numbers of parasitoid eggs. Larvae in superparasitized aphids developed slower than single larvae. The supernumerary larvae died during the 1st instar, probably killed by chemical means since no physical attacks between larvae have been observed.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments indicate that there are many ecologically isolated populations of Spirorbisinornatus L'Hardy & Quiévreux, each tending to select the algal substratum which supported their parents. In some algae certain parts of the thallus are particularly favourable for settlement and, in some areas, this involves adaptation of the local population, e.g. to settle on fronds of Laminaria in sheltered localities. Other parts are unfavourable and these are generally the parts which are most illuminated in their natural orientation (e.g. the upper sides of Himanthalia buttons and the outer sides of Laminaria holdfast branches). These parts are active in producing antibiotics, which may thus have an antifouling role, deterring settlement of larvae whether or not those larvae come from populations adapted to settling upon other parts of the thallus. Most larvae from populations on the turf-alga Chondrus settle without any pelagic phase, whereas the majority from populations on Himanthalia and Laminaria holdfasts become pelagic. The proportions choosing holdfasts in laboratory experiments are high, however, suggesting that the need for skill in such choice, by these pelagic populations, more than balances any effect from outcrossing.  相似文献

Observations, linear measurements, dissections, and histological preparations were made of parasitized and nonparasitized larvae of the alfalfa weevil,Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), on a daily basis. The observed developmental period lasted from 24 h after oviposition byBathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) orBathyplectes anurus (Thomson) until parasite larvae emerged from their hosts. Adult and larval parasites significantly altered growth and development ofH. postica larvae.B. curculionis andB. anurus caused 24 and 29% greater premature mortality in young host larvae than that observed in the unparasitized controls. Rate of development for parasitized larvae during the 1st 12 days was essentially the same as for nonparasitized larvae. Nonparasitized larvae reached maximum size in 17–18 days, whereas larvae parasitized byB. curculionis andB. anurus required 14–21 and 19–22 days, respectively. Larvae parasitized byB. curculionis are smaller in overall lengths, widths and head capsule widths than nonparasitized larvae and those parasitized byB. anurus.  相似文献

Changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of ichthyoplankton off the coast of the Moroccan Sahara (21–28° N) in different seasons of 1994–2007 are analyzed. In this region, the pelagic eggs and larvae of over 100 fish species belonging to 62 families have been recorded. In cold periods, off the coast of the Moroccan Sahara there is peak in the spawning of fish of the subtropical fauna. The majority of them are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, common scad Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. In warm periods there is intensive spawning of fish of the tropical fauna. Among them, dominants are round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African scad Trachurus trecae, and Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish is calculated by the quantity of eggs laid by females. The environmental factors are indicated that influence the fluctuation of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the region under consideration.  相似文献

The nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a rat lungworm, a zoonotic pathogen that causes human eosinophilic meningitis and ocular angiostrongyliasis characteristic of rat lungworm (RLW) disease. Definitive diagnosis is made by finding and identifying A. cantonensis larvae in the cerebral spinal fluid or by using a custom immunological or molecular test. This study was conducted to determine if genomic DNA from A. cantonensis is detectable by qPCR in the blood or tissues of experimentally infected rats. F1 offspring from wild rats were subjected to experimental infection with RLW larvae isolated from slugs, then blood or tissue samples were collected over multiple time points. Blood samples were collected from 21 rats throughout the course of two trials (15 rats in Trial I, and 6 rats in Trial II). In addition to a control group, each trial had two treatment groups: the rats in the low dose (LD) group were infected by approximately 10 larvae and the rats in the high dose (HD) group were infected with approximately 50 larvae. In Trial I, parasite DNA was detected in cardiac bleed samples from five of five LD rats and five of five HD rats at six weeks post-infection (PI), and three of five LD rats and five of five HD rats from tail tissue. In Trial II, parasite DNA was detected in peripheral blood samples from one of two HD rats at 53 minutes PI, one of two LD rats at 1.5 hours PI, one of two HD rats at 18 hours PI, one of two LD rats at five weeks PI and two of two at six weeks PI, and two of two HD rats at weeks five and six PI. These data demonstrate that parasite DNA can be detected in peripheral blood at various time points throughout RLW infection in rats.  相似文献

Both phenotypic plasticity and local genetic adaptation may contribute to a species’ ability to inhabit different environmental conditions. While phenotypic plasticity is usually considered costly, local adaptation takes generations to respond to environmental change and may be constrained by strong gene flow. The majority of marine species have complex life-cycles with pelagic stages that might be expected to promote gene flow and plastic responses, and yet several notable examples of local adaptation have been found in species with broadcast larvae. In the ascidian, Ciona intestinalis (Linnaeus, 1767),—a common marine species with broadcast spawning and a short larval stage—previous studies have found marked differences in salinity tolerance of early life-history stages among populations from different salinity regimes. We used common-garden experiments to test whether observed differences in salinity tolerance could be explained by phenotypic plasticity. Adult ascidians from two low salinity populations [2–5 m depth, ~25 practical salinity units (PSU)], and two full salinity populations (25–27 m depth, ~31 PSU) were acclimated for 2–4 weeks at both 25 and 31 PSU. Gametes were fertilized at the acclimation salinities, and the newly formed embryos were transferred to 10 different salinities (21–39 PSU) and cultured to metamorphosis. Adult acclimation salinity had an overriding and significant effect on larval metamorphic success: tolerance norms for larvae almost fully matched the acclimation salinity of the parents, independent of parental origin (deep or shallow). However we also detected minor population differences that could be attributed to either local adaptation or persistent environmental effects. We conclude that differences in salinity tolerance of C. intestinalis larvae from different populations are driven primarily by transgenerational phenotypic plasticity, a strategy that seems particularly favourable for an organism living in coastal waters where salinity is less readily predicted than in the open oceans.  相似文献

Based on results of processing planktonic and benthic samples collected in 1996 and 1997, a spatial distribution of echinoderms in the bottom and of their larvae in the plankton were collated for the water area of the Southern region of the Far Eastern State Biosphere Marine Reserve. Some correlation between distributions of the adult and larval sea star Asterias amurensis in July was revealed. At the same time, there was no correlation between distributions of larvae and adult individuals of the brittle star Ophiura sarsi and sea urchin Echinocardium cordatum, which are most abundant in the area. The size structure of bottom populations of the brittle stars O. sarsi and Amphiodia fissa in the studied area was assessed. The correlation coefficient between the distribution of young-of-the-year and the population density was 0.47 in O. sarsi and 0.74 in A. fissa respectively, which implied a selective settling of larvae of those species in areas inhabited by adult brittle stars. Recruitment of bottom populations from 1996 spawning was 5% in O. sarsi and 3.3% in A. fissa.  相似文献

Two endogenous biorhythms of the mass specific rate of oxygen consumption with periods of 10.3 and 7.2 weeks have been revealed in the late postlarval ontogenesis of freshwater gastropods Lymnaea stagnalis by singular spectrum analysis. It has been determined that local maxima of both biorhythms in different individuals occur at the same age; in addition to that, the periods of biorhythms are approximately the same in all studied animals and remain unchanged during the whole individual development. It has been noted that the biorhythm with a period of 10.3 weeks is damped (its amplitude decreases from 8 μL O2/(h g) at the age of 20 weeks to 3 μL O2/(h g) at the time of death), and the biorhythm with the period of 7.2 weeks is sustained (its average amplitude is 2.4 ± 0.4 μL O2/(h g).  相似文献

Based on materials of plankton surveying carried out in May–October 2008, the species composition, distribution, and density of pelagic larvae of bivalves of the Ussuriysky Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) were studied. Larvae of 66 taxa were revealed and identified. The Bivalvia larvae occurred in the plankton during the entire period of study. Two areas, the inner and open part of the bay, which vary in the composition, concentration, and terms of larva occurrence in the plankton were distinguished. The larvae of Mytilus coruscus, Mactra chinensis, Modiolus kurilensis, Ruditapes philippinarum, Mya uzenensis and Teredo navalis were the most numerous and widespread. It was shown that despite high taxonomic diversity, the density of Bivalvia larvae in the Ussuriysky Bay was an order of magnitude lower, even in terms of their maximum number, than in other studied areas of the Peter the Great Bay.  相似文献
