A series of transects in the Firth of Clyde have shown that filaments of Conchocelis in shell substrata are always the deepest growing red algae. The abundance of calcareous material on the sea bed and its invariable association with the perennial Conchocellis filaments offers a reliable means of estimating photic limits. Some interactions of grazing molluscs with the shell-boring organism have been observed. Some of the pitfalls to be encountered in field determinationsof Conchocelis and its consequent use as an indicator organism are described.  相似文献

The specialized salt glands on the epidermis of halophytic plants secrete excess salts from tissues by a mechanism that is poorly understood. We examined the salt glands as putative salt and water bi‐regulatory units that can respond swiftly to altering environmental cues. The tropical mangrove tree species (Avicennia officinalis) is able to grow under fluctuating salinities (0.7–50.0 dS m?1) at intertidal zones, and its salt glands offer an excellent platform to investigate their dynamic responses under rapidly changing salinities. Utilizing a novel epidermal peel system, secretion profiles of hundreds of individual salt glands examined revealed that these glands could secrete when exposed to varying salinities. Notably, rhythmic fluctuations observed in secretion rates were reversibly inhibited by water channel (aquaporin) blocker, and two aquaporin genes (PIP and TIP) preferentially expressed in the salt gland cells were rapidly induced in response to increasing salt concentration. We propose that aquaporins are involved and contribute to the re‐absorption of water during salt removal in Avicennia officinalis salt glands. This constitutes an adaptive feature that contributes to salt balance of trees growing in saline environments where freshwater availability is limited.  相似文献

This paper describes the reproduction and life history of an intertidal species, Porphyra endiviifolium, from Antarctica. Field specimens were examined microscopically, prepared for electron microscopy and used to establish cultures. Wild populations comprised two kinds of leafy thalli, morphologically similar but distinguished by their mode of reproduction, either sexual or asexual. Carpospores from monoecious leafy gametophytes developed into conchocelis filaments in culture, and under “winter-spring” conditions these formed conchospores that germinated to produce leafy thalli. Monospores from asexual leafy thalli developed directly into two different forms of leafy thalli. Only one of the cultured morphotypes became fertile, reproducing asexually by monospores. We conclude that the phases of the life history of P. endiviifolium show different ecological strategies, the conchocelis phase reproducing in response to short days unlike the leafy thalli in which growth and reproduction respond primarily to irradiance. Ag., spores which have originated as a result of the repeateddivision of the mother-cells have been germinated. When grownon glass their method of germination and growth agrees withthat described by previous investigators, but when germinatedon sterile shell the germ-tubes penetrate the shell and developinto growths identical with Conchocelis rosea Batters. This‘species’, therefore, is a phase in the life-historyof P. umbilicalis var. laciniata and not an autonomous species.The development of the ‘Conchocelis’-phase in cultureis described and also the formation of fertile cell-rows and‘plantlets’. Until the significance of these structuresis understood and a cytological investigation completed, therelationship of the intertidal leafy Porphyra-thallua to thefilamentous, shell-inhabiting, deep-water Conchocelis cannotbe expressed in the terms usually employed to denote the variousphases of the life-histories of algae.  相似文献

The activity pattern of intertidal crabs is influenced by factors that usually change rhythmically following tidal and/or diel cycles, and is often associated with the use of refuges. The movement activity of the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata was compared among three populations from SW Atlantic coastal areas where they face different tidal regimes, water salinities, substrata and biological factors. At each site, we examined the seasonal activity of the crabs (individuals collected in pitfall traps) in two types of habitat: mudflat and salt marsh. The working hypothesis is that the activity would vary according to the diverse environmental conditions encountered at geographical and local scales. Crab activity varied between sites and seasons showing to be more intense when habitats were covered by water. The most active groups were large males, followed by large non-ovigerous females. Ovigerous females were almost inactive. Most crabs were near or inside burrows at low tides in Mar Chiquita and Bahía Blanca, but they were active at both low and high tides in San Antonio during spring and summer. N. granulata were active in a wide range of temperatures: from 10 to 37 °C at low tides and at temperatures as low as 2 °C when covered by water. Differences of activity between mudflat and salt marsh varied among sites depending on flooding frequencies. Movement activity of N. granulata varied both in space and in time; crabs move under very different abiotic conditions (e.g., low or high tide, daylight or night, low and high temperature) and their movement may also be prevented or elicited by biotic conditions like burrow complexity, food quality and predation pressure. The wide set of conditions under which N. granulata can be active may explain why this is the only semiterrestrial crab inhabiting latitudes higher than 40°S in South America.  相似文献

Salt stress is a major abiotic stress factor that can induce many adverse effects on photosynthetic organisms. Plants and algae have developed several mechanisms that help them respond to adverse environments. Non‐photochemical quenching (NPQ) is one of these mechanisms. The thalli of algae in the intertidal zone that are attached to rocks can be subjected to salt stress for a short period of time due to the rise and fall of the tide. Ulva prolifera causes green tides and can form floating mats when green tides occur and the upper part of the thalli is subjected to high salt stress for a long period of time. In this study, we compared the Ulva prolifera photosynthetic activities and NPQ kinetics when it is subjected to different salinities over various periods of time. Thalli exposed to a salinity of 90 for 4 d showed enhanced NPQ, and photosynthetic activities decreased from 60 min after exposure up to 4 d. This indicated that the induction of NPQ in Ulva prolifera under salt stress was closely related to the stressing extent and stressing time. The enhanced NPQ in the treated samples exposed for 4 d may explain why the upper layer of the floating mats formed by Ulva prolifera thalli were able to survive in the harsh environment. Further inhibitor experiments demonstrated that the enhanced NPQ was xanthophyll cycle and transthylakoid proton gradient‐dependent. However, photosystem II subunit S and light‐harvesting complex stress‐related protein didn't over accumulate and may not be responsible for the enhanced NPQ.  相似文献

Sargassum fusiforme, a species of brown seaweed with economic importance, inhabits lower intertidal zones where algae are often exposed to various stresses. In this study, changes in the photosynthetic performance of S. fusiforme under saline stress were investigated. The PSII performance in S. fusiforme significantly improved, when the thalli were exposed to 0% salinity, and remained high with prolonging treatment time. In contrast, the PSII activity declined considerably under salinities of 4.5 and 6%. The PSI activity did not change remarkably under saline stress, thus demonstrating higher tolerance to saline stress than PSII. In addition, the PSI activity could be also restored after saline treatments, when PSII was inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. It might be as a result of changes in the NAD(P)H content in the thalli under saline stress. Our results suggested that PSI was much more tolerant to different saline stress than PSII in S. fusiforme. We demonstrated that S. fusiforme was much more tolerant to hyposaline than to hypersaline stress.  相似文献

Porphyra vietnamensis Tanaka & Pham-Hoang Ho is a tropical species of high potential for farming. Studies of the life cycle have been conducted for many years but have not been successful until recently. Mature thalli were collected from Songkhla, in the southern part of Thailand, and were used to obtain Conchocelis in the laboratory in Bangkok. Conchocelis in shells as well as free-floating filaments could be observed after one week of incubation at 25 °C, 25 salinity and 350–500 lux light intensity, and covered the culture shell surface within 2 months. Conchosporangia were formed after being incubated for 10 days at 30 °C, 20 salinity under light intensities of 350–500 lux with a photoperiod of 12 hours a day. Induction of conchospore release was achieved by lowering the temperature to 25 °C and the salinity to 10–15 and increasing the light intensity to 800–1000 lux. Liberated conchospores germinated into young thalli which became mature after 70 days.  相似文献

The larvae of Callibaetis coloradensis can tolerate a fairly wide range of salinities at hypotonic concentrations. However, they are more sensitive to increasing than to decreasing salt concentrations. Exposure to isotonic concentration results in profound degenerations of the chloride cells within 1 day. Long-term adaptation to diluted fresh water causes a significant increase in the number of chloride cells, whereas the gradual concentration of fresh water to finally 120 mM sodium chloride within a period of 15 days leads to approximately 50 per cent mortality and significantly reduces the number of chloride cells in the survivors. The same reciprocal relation between the number of chloride cells and the external salinity was found in larvae of C. floridans collected from fresh- and brackish-water habitats. These results suggest that the adaptive behaviour of the chloride cells is correlated with the osmoregulatory situation and enables these animals to live in habitats of different salinities.  相似文献

研究鱼类群落在不同生境中的差异或者变化,是评价与预测生境丧失、环境退化等对湿地生物多样性与生态系统功能影响的重要基础。2006年4—11月,在长江河口崇明东滩盐沼植被分布区(简称草滩)和邻近的光滩区域分别设置采样站位,每月大潮期采用定制插网对鱼类群落进行了取样调查。分析研究了长江河口潮间带盐沼植被分布区和邻近光滩区域的鱼类组成及其月际变化,并对影响鱼类分布的主要因子进行了探讨。调查期间共采集鱼类标本1638尾,分属9目14科22种;其中,淡水鱼类2种,定居性河口鱼类12种,海洋鱼类5种,洄游鱼类3种。植被分布区和光滩区域鱼类组成及优势种特征存在明显差异。调查期间,植被分布区记录鱼类13种,主要优势种为斑尾刺虾虎鱼(Acanthogobius ommaturus)、鲻(Mugil cephalus)和棱鮻(Liza carinatus)(IRI>20),其他种类基本不具有优势度特征(IRI<0.05);光滩区域记录鱼类20种,主要优势种鲻(IRI>20),其他包括斑尾刺虾虎鱼、狼牙鳗虾虎鱼(Taenioides rubicundus)、棱鮻和棘头梅童鱼(Collichthys lucidus)也具有一定的优势特征(20>IRI>10);两个区域共有种为11种,部分种类只出现在光滩或植被分布区,但主要优势种均为定居性河口鱼类。与世界其他河口盐沼湿地鱼类研究结果不同的是,光滩区域记录的鱼类物种数、个体数、生物量和整体物种多样性水平均高于植被分布区;光滩和植被分布区鱼类相应的量比关系存在明显的月际变化,但两种生境鱼类组成间的关联性和差异性均不显著。通过比较两种生境共有的优势种体长发现,长江河口盐沼植被分布区鱼类优势种的平均体长大于光滩区域,而且植被分布区部分优势种体长的上、下限范围也大于光滩区域。长江河口盐沼植被分布区,除了育幼场外,还是许多鱼类成鱼的重要栖息地。影响河口潮间带盐沼湿地鱼类组成与分布的主要因素包括鱼类自身的生物学与生活史特征、饵料生物的组成与分布、植被出现与表形特征等生物因素和水温、盐度、淡水径流、潮汐特性等非生物因素,其对长江河口潮间带盐沼湿地中鱼类群落的组成与分布的综合作用机理有待进一步研究。  相似文献

Juncus kraussii Hochst., an important saltmarsh macrophyte, is intensively harvested for many commercially orientated products and current populations are under threat of overexploitation. In saline, intertidal mud banks, this species occurs on higher ground, suggesting that it is adapted to lower salinities and less frequent inundation. The objectives of this study were to determine biomass accumulation, as well as morphological and physiological adaptations of J. kraussii to salinity and waterlogging stresses. Plants collected from the field were subjected to 0.2, 10, 30, 50 and 70% seawater under drained or flooded conditions for three months. Measurements were made of biomass accumulation, CO2 exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, ion and water relations. Furthermore, seed germination responses to a range of salinities were investigated. Total dry biomass accumulation, as well as the number and height of culms, decreased with increase in salinity under both flooded and drained conditions. Generally, CO2 exchange, stomatal conductance, Photosystem II (PSII) quantum yield and electron transport rate (ETR) through PSII declined with increase in salinity in both the flooded and drained treatments. Predawn and midday ψ in culms decreased with increase in salinity, being lower under drained than flooded conditions. Inorganic solute concentrations in culms increased with increase in salinity, with Na+ and Cl being the predominant ions. Na+/K+ ratios in culms increased significantly with increase in salinity. Proline concentrations in roots and culms, which increased with salinity, were considerably higher under drained than flooded conditions. Germination was best at salinities less than 20% seawater and decreased significantly with further increase in salinity to 110% seawater. Transfer of ungerminated salt-treated seeds to distilled water stimulated germination. This study has demonstrated that J. kraussii is a highly salt and flood tolerant species, being able to grow and survive in salinities up to 70% seawater, under both drained and flooded conditions. Maximal growth occurred at low salinities (<10% seawater) under flooded condition.  相似文献

APorphyropsis-like epiphytic specimen found in the harbour of Helgoland was grown in culture and proved to be identical with the JapanesePorphyra yezoensis. Life history studies on this economically important alga resulted in some interesting and hitherto unknown details. The variability of the adult frond is fundamentally determined by the pattern of spore germination. Settled onChaetomorpha filaments, monospores elongate within 20 minutes; the epiphytic germlings are attached to the substrate by a typical basal cell and give rise exclusively to elongated fronds provided with a cuneate base. Unattached spores, however, germinate into buds with rhizoids; they develop into elongated elliptical to oval fronds provided with round or cordate bases. Only plants with male areas were observed in the cultures, butConchocelis was abundantly produced from cells of aged thalli. Grown in mussel-shells, the filamentous phase liberated conchospores for a long time.

This investigation was designed to compare the differential stress tolerance in young thalli of two similar intertidal red seaweeds, Grateloupia turuturu Yamada and Palmaria palmata Kuntze, and to identify whether the invasive alga G. turuturu was more stress tolerant than P. palmata to cope with adverse environmental conditions. To do so, we measured the production of reactive oxygen caused by methyl viologen (MV) by assessing the oxidation of dichlorohydrofluorescein (DCFH) to dichlorofluorescein (DCF), the activities of reactive oxygen scavenging enzymes and the changes of the optimal fluorescence quantum yield (Fv/Fm) when the thalli of the two species were exposed to oxidative stresses caused by the addition of MV, H2O2, 3(3, 4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea (DCMU), heavy metal, changes of salinities, heat and freezing. Results demonstrated that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) in G. turuturu were much higher than in P. palmata. Fv/Fm in G. turuturu was less sensitive than that in P. palmata to MV, H2O2, DCMU, heavy metal, salinity and heat stress, indicating that G. turuturu could be better acclimatized to changing environments and thus had a higher threshold for oxidative stress than P. palmata. G. turuturu was shown to be more sensitive to freezing treatment (− 20 °C), which explained why the appearance of G. turuturu was rarely reported in colder water environments.  相似文献

Larval and juvenile fishes were collected at low tide from the surface of an intertidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia every 6 days from 25 May through 20 December 1982. Larval fishes were present in shallow puddles of tidal water on the marsh from the beginning of the sampling period until the end of October. Juveniles were present throughout the year. Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus) and F. luciae (Baird) accounted for 96.3% (67.0% and 29.3%, respectively) of the 4355 fishes collected. These fishes exhibited synchronous, temporal pulses in larval abundance, suggesting that reproduction was discontinuous and controlled by the same factor(s) in both species. Larval F. heteroclitus inhabited aquatic micro-habitats near the upland edge of the intertidal marsh, but as the larvae grew to juvenile size (≈ 10 mm standard length) they moved to lower elevations near a tidal creek. Large juveniles and adults of F. heteroclitus infrequently occurred in the samples, presumably because they leave the intertidal marsh as the tide ebbs. F. luciae were rarely found in low marsh areas, but all age classes (including adults) occurred at higher elevations, supporting previous suggestions that this species prefers high marsh habitats. The vegetated, intertidal salt marsh appears to be the principal nursery habitat for both of these cyprinodontid species.  相似文献

The potential driving force(s) of the vertical distribution of subtidal barnacle Balanus trigonus Darwin were investigated using both field and laboratory experiments. Early juveniles (∼24 h old) placed in intertidal [∼0.5 m above mean low water level (MLWL)] and subtidal (∼3 m below MLWL) habitats survived equally well, indicating that the intertidal absence of B. trigonus in Hong Kong waters was not determined by differential mortality. However, enhanced attachment of cyprids in subtidal habitats indicated the importance of differential larval choice in determining their vertical distribution. In the laboratory, cyprids preferred to attach in response to subtidal microbial films, which may implicate microbial films as a primary cue in driving the adult vertical distribution. Microbial films developed in these two habitats differed in their biomass (=total organic carbon), abundance of bacteria and diatoms (determined by fluorescence microscopy), and bacterial diversity (determined by DNA fingerprinting analysis). For example, 6-day films in subtidal habitat had a significantly higher biomass than in films from intertidal habitat (P<0.05). There was no difference in the biomass of films from these two habitats in 9-day films (P>0.05); however, bacterial abundance was greater in subtidal films than in intertidal films, irrespective of the age of the film, although there was no difference in diatom abundance in films from these two habitats. Neither the abundance of bacteria and diatoms nor the biomass correlated with the attachment preferences of cyprids. This study has not provided any data to prove the existence of inductive and inhibitive (to cyprid attachment) bacterial species in subtidal and intertidal films, respectively; however, results indicate that bacterial community provided qualitative information that might explain the preferential attachment of B. trigonus cyprids in subtidal habitat.  相似文献

Possible reproductive isolation between freshwater and brackish water populations of the dioecious charophyte Chara aspera was studied by means of cross-fertilization experiments and AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism). Three Swedish freshwater populations and three (German and Swedish) Baltic Sea populations of C. aspera were sampled. Cross-fertilization experiments were performed in a full combination setup of all populations and with two different salinities (0 and 10 PSU). Both freshwater and brackish water females formed about 70% more gametangia at 0 than at 10 PSU. Male individuals collected from freshwater had higher fertility than brackish water males at both salinities. 57% of all gametangia of females from freshwater developed into oospores compared to only 8% of gametangia of brackish water females. 42% of all oospores were fertilized in crosses between habitats (freshwater–brackish water) compared to 36% in crosses within habitats, the difference was not significant.Oospore and bulbil germination was investigated using propagules from freshwater and brackish water populations and incubation salinities of 0, 5, 10 and 20 PSU. None of the oospores collected from brackish water germinated. Germination of oospores and bulbils from freshwater was higher at 0 and 5 PSU than at higher salinities. Only around 40% of bulbils from brackish water germinated at 20 PSU compared to around 70% at the other three salinities. Germination of all bulbils was delayed at 20 PSU compared to other salinities.Genetic similarities (Jaccard indices of AFLP data) were higher within than between populations, but comparisons within habitat (freshwater–freshwater and brackish water–brackish water) were not different from comparisons between habitats.Our results did not identify any reproductive isolation between freshwater and brackish water populations, but indicate low gene flow between the two habitats. Oospore and bulbil germination success were highest at salinities corresponding to the conditions of their original habitat, suggesting genetic adaptation to their environmental conditions and indicating that propagules transported from freshwater to brackish water or vice versa will hardly develop into fertile plants. Additionally, brackish water plants perform poorer in all aspects of sexual reproduction than freshwater plants. Possibly, successful dispersal of oospores is not subjected to high selective pressure within the Baltic Sea where new sites easily can be colonized by means of vegetative reproduction. We assume that these adaptations will favour speciation within C. aspera and support the idea of the geologically young Baltic Sea as a “cradle of plant evolution”.  相似文献

An intertidal hypersaline cyanobacterial mat from Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) exhibited a reversible change in its surface colour within several hours upon changes in salinity of the overlying water. The mat surface was orange‐reddish at salinities above 15% and turned dark green at lower salinities. We investigated this phenomenon using a polyphasic approach that included denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, microscopy, high‐performance liquid chromatography, hyperspectral imaging, absorption spectroscopy, oxygen microsensor measurements and modelling of salinity dynamics. Filaments of Microcoleus chthonoplastes, identified based on 16S rRNA sequencing and morphology, were found to migrate up and down when salinity was decreased below or increased above 15%, respectively, causing the colour change of the mat uppermost layer. Migration occurred in light and in the dark, and could be induced by different salts, not only NaCl. The influence of salinity‐dependent and independent physico‐chemical parameters, such as water activity, oxygen solubility, H2S, gravity and light, was excluded, indicating that the observed migration was due to a direct response to salt stress. We propose to term this salinity‐driven cyanobacterial migration as ‘halotaxis’, a process that might play a vital role in the survival of cyanobacteria in environments exposed to continuous salinity fluctuations such as intertidal flats.  相似文献

为了研究条斑紫菜耐盐机理,对条斑紫菜叶状体进行了高盐胁迫处理,继而采用氧电极法测量了光合放氧速率和呼吸耗氧速率的变化,采用实时荧光定量PCR技术测量了S-腺苷甲硫氨酸合成酶(命名为PySAMS)基因的表达变化。结果显示藻体的光合与呼吸作用均受到高盐度海水的显著影响,随着盐度的增加,光合放氧率逐渐降低,呼吸耗氧率也逐渐降低。高盐度海水对PySAMS基因表达量也产生了显著影响,40和50盐度的海水诱导了PySAMS表达,但60至80盐度的海水却不同程度地抑制了PySAMS表达。据此推测,在面对较高盐度胁迫时条斑紫菜叶状体将逐步降低体内新陈代谢以度过不良环境。  相似文献

Salt tolerance of the freshwater tubificid Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri varied from an LD 50 of 10 ppt to 10.5 ppt for mature and immature worms without sediment, 9.4 to 10.5 in sand, and 14.3 for immatures acclimated to 5 ppt. Ilyodrilus templetoni was similarly intolerant to higher salinities. The estuarine Tubificoides gabriellae tolerated salt water, but was susceptible to freshwater, with LD 50's of 2 and 3.5 when acclimated to 5 and 10 ppt sea water. It survived immersion in freshwater for 3 hours. The estuarine naidids Paranais litoralis and frici experienced mortalities at both high and low salinities but showed a wide tolerance range. The coastal tubificid Monopylephorus irroratus showed almost complete tolerance to the salinity range employed. The findings reflected field distributions especially when interstitial salinities were measured, but worms did not occupy the full range of habitats possible in terms of salinity alone.  相似文献

Cosmopolitan species of the genus Ulva (Ulvaceae; Chlorophyta) that populate the littoral zone of marine habitats constitute a staple diet for a variety of organisms, particularly snails, shellfish, polychaetes, and birds. Occurrence of Ulva species (e.g., U. flexuosa and U . prolifera) has also been observed in freshwater inland ecosystems that have no contact with saline water. However, the influence of the development of macroalgal mats of Ulva on indigenous organisms in limnic ecosystems has not been established. This study investigates the trophic relationships between Ulva flexuosa and one species of snail from freshwater habitats in central Europe. During the summer, the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) consumed Ulva as a source of nutrition even when other algae and plants were available. Lymnaea stagnalis consumed an average of 100 mg of Ulva thalli per day. This level of biomass exceeded the consumption of an alternative food source, the shoots of Elodea canadensis. Ulva thalli are more actively consumed by great pond snails than Elodea shoots, and this is expressed in terms of the differences of biomass consumption. It was also observed that the interior of the monostromatic tubular thalli of Ulva flexuosa serves as a protective shelter for juvenile great pond snails.  相似文献
