Little is known about the acoustic behaviour of freshwater crustaceans. The present study is the first to describe the acoustic features and the sound production mechanisms of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii. Acoustic signalling was recorded and videotaped. When the animals were recorded in air, they produced a pulsed signal by beating the scaphognathite inside the chamber constituted by the efferent branchial channels. No sound was emitted after scaphognathite ablation. The acoustic features of the signals varied among individuals but were not correlated with body size. Several hypotheses on the functions of these sounds were discussed.  相似文献

Extracts of the pericardial organs of crabs injected into intact animals cause an increase in the frequency of scaphognathite beating. The active factor is not dopamine of 5-hydroxytryptamine, which are present in pericardial organs; it is probably a peptide. The factor may represent a hormonal mechanism of coordinating heart rate and ventilation.  相似文献

Respiratory exchange in decapod crustacea requires the coordinated activity of the heart and the scaphognathites, appendages which ventilate the gills. There is common central nervous system neuronal modulation of both autogenically active systems as well as direct neuronal communication between both systems. The heart and scaphognathites also respond directly to oxygen tension. The neuronal control of the scaphognathites also respond directly to oxygen tension. The neuronal control of the scaphognathites is analyzed at several levels. Particular attention is directed toward the means by which the innately organized and stereotyped motor pattern for forward beating can be altered to produce reversed beating. The importance of sensory feedback in maintaining normal rates of scaphognathite beating is noted. And the phenomenon of bilateral coordination between the morphologically independent scaphognathites is described. Several different models of parts of the over-all scaphognathite neuronal circuitry are presented for heuristic purposes.  相似文献

The acute (30 min) responses of heart and scaphognathite activities ofCrangon crangon on exposure to concentrations of 1–20 mg Cd, Cu or Zn 1−1 are increased beat frequencies. The relative magnitude of response(Δ f) is linearly related to immediate pretreatment frequency(f) and standardised responses(Δ fs) are given forf values of 70 and 100 beats min−1 for hearts and scaphognathites, respectively.Δ fs values for each organ are also linearly related to test concentration for each metal. Qualitative changes to organ activities described include an increased incidence of scaphognathite reversals in concentrations of 5.0 mg Cu 1−1 and in 20.0 mg Zn 1−1. Chronic (13 days) exposure to incipient lethal levels of the test metals produced increases in scaphognathite rates of the Cd-treated animals and in heart and scaphognathite rates of the coppertreated animals. The general applicability of these methods to studies of pollution stress in decapods is discussed.  相似文献

Scaphognathite activity and ventilatory responses to changes of ambient oxygen have been studied in stressed and fully settled crabs, Carcinus maenas (L.). Compared with resting, fully settled animals, resting stressed crabs exhibited very high values of scaphognathite beat frequency, negative hydrostatic pressure in the gill chamber and amount of time spent ventilating, suggesting a much elevated ventilatory flow rate. Unlike fully settled animals, stressed crabs did not show significant ventilatory responses to changes of ambient oxygenation.  相似文献

The behaviour of the lesser sandeel, Ammodytes marinus (Raitt), has been investigated using a photographic method of recording activity. Three main states of activity were recognized: (1) swimming, (2) partially emerged from the sand, or (3) completely buried in the sand. When food was present there was a basic diurnal rhythm of activity; during the dark period most of the fish remained buried in the sand and in the light period they emerged to swim and feed. In the absence of food the level of swimming activity during the light period was extremely low, while the level of partial emergence activity increased. The fish appear to be visual feeders and those which were buried in the sand did not appear to be able to detect the presence of food in the water by means of olfaction. There was usually a low level of partial emergence activity during the dark period, which tended to increase in the few hours before the lights were switched on. The timing of this increase was thought to be related to an internal clock. The basic diurnal rhythm of activity shown in the laboratory experiments is discussed in relation to the marked diurnal variation in the catch of sandeels in the fishery. It is concluded that the failure to catch sandeels at night is due to their remaining buried in the sand.  相似文献

Myocardial α-adrenoceptors are similar to vascular α-adrenoceptors; therefore the drugs which are used to study myocardial α-adrenoceptors can affect the heart indirectly by acting on vascular α-adrenoceptors. High concentrations of α-adrenoceptor stimulant and α-adrenoceptor blocking drugs can exert cardiac effects that do not result from action on α-adrenoceptors; therefore relatively low concentrations of these drugs must be used to obtain specific effects.An α-adrenoceptor mediated positive inotropic effect has been observed in relatively slow beating isolated heart preparations; it is not associated with shortening of the duration of systole or an increase in myocardial cyclic AMP concentration and is probably accompanied by an increase in Ca2+ influx. Usually α-adrenoceptor stimulation has no effect on heart rate.Myocardial α-adrenoceptor mediated ventricular arrhythmias have been caused in animals by high concentrations of catecholamines, and a transient increase in α-adrenoceptor concentration has been found in ischemic myocardium. We do not know how myocardial α-adrenoceptor stimulation causes arrhythmias. In isolated heart preparations low concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine prolong refractory period and action potential duration by α-adrenoceptor stimulation, and higher concentrations of the catecholamines shorten refractory period and action potential duration by α-adrenoceptor stimulation. In isolated specialized conducting fibers low concentrations of catecholamines reduce automaticity by α-adrenoceptor stimulation and higher concentrations increase automaticity by β-adrenoceptor stimulation. In partially depolorized ventricle preparations α-adrenoceptor stimulation has been reported both to depress and to restore electrical and mechanical activity. Clearly, much remains to be done before we understand α-adrenoceptor mediated cardiac effects.  相似文献

Buried Crangon crangon (L.) produce, anterior to their gill chambers, an inhalant and exhalant channel in the substratum. The combined shape and disposition of the maxillipeds effects separation of the inhalatory and exhalatory streams, and this channelling allows the maintenance of a posteroanteriorly directed flow of water over the gills of buried animals.Impedance techniques have been used to obtain qualitative data on the movements of scaphognathites. Reversals were identified and seen to occur particularly during burying and at the onset of walking. Reversals begin by the anterior region of the scaphognathite missing a beat, and end with the middle and anterior regions pausing.Analyses of movement patterns of individual scaphognathites show that a beat comprises equally-effective depression levation phases, but the timing sequence of the movements differs slightly from that reported in Carcinus maenas.  相似文献

Summary The tops of intertidal boulders on the east coast of Australia may carry a half-dozen algae, while the undersides may support a dozen or more species of sessile animals; mobile forms such as molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms are also common. These organisms are disturbed when boulders are moved by waves or buried in sand. Experiments were done to test the hypothesis that these disturbances are responsible for the reduced diversity and abundance of the assemblages on the undersides of small boulders. Boulders on one shore were bolted to the substratum to prevent movement by waves. In two separate experiments on another shore, boulders with and without attached organisms were buried in a few centimetres of sand. All experiments included relevant controls and were done high and low on the shore using rocks of several sizes.The assemblages of algae developing on the tops of all stabilised boulders, regardless of size, were similar to those on boulders free to roll indicating that, in contrast to results elsewhere, disturbance by waves was too infrequent or slight to affect these species. The tops of rocks were also rarely buried in sand and the main influences on the community in this situation were apparently exposure at low-tide and grazing gastropods.More species, however, did settle or survive on the undersides of rocks which were free of sand or could not be moved by waves; thus disturbances were important in this situation. In the absence of disturbance low on the shore, much or all space was occupied and sessile species such as sponges and ascidians overgrew other forms and reduced diversity. This did not happen higher on the shore and here diversity was simply an increasing function of rock-size. Overall disturbance played a similar role in all places — it killed organisms and created free space — but the final effects on the community varied depending upon the species present and the actions of other factors.  相似文献

The effect of starvation on the synthesis of C16 juvenile hormone (JH) and the growth of terminal oöcytes was assessed in Schistocerca americana gregaria at two times during adult life: before activation of the corpora allata and during the first gonotrophic cycle. In both groups, starvation resulted in a decline in JH synthesis within 2–3 days and rates of synthesis remained low throughout the experimental period. The growth rate of oöcytes which were not vitellogenic at the time of starvation was depressed whereas the percentage of resorption of vitellogenic oöcytes increased dramatically with starvation. Although the percentage of resorption increased in animals with vitellogenic oöcytes, some mature oöcytes were produced, particularly in animals in which the oöcytes were greater than 5 mm in length at the time of starvation. This suggests that oöcyte maturation can be divided into two distinct phases—an early phase of vitellogenesis associated with high rates of JH synthesis and a late phase, in oöcytes greater than 5 mm, associated with much lower rates of JH synthesis.Stimulation of JH synthesis by farnesenic acid in 5-day starved animals resulted in high rates of JH synthesis, indicating that starvation did not appreciably alter the enzymic activities of the final two stages in JH synthesis. Thus rate limitation did not occur at these stages.Feeding of 5-day starved animals resulted in a transient increase in the rate of JH synthesis. However, rates of JH synthesis and oöcyte growth remained subnormal throughout the observation period, suggesting that the effects of starvation cannot be entirely reversed by feeding. Thus starvation may decrease the reproductive potential of the females.  相似文献

The rhythm could be entrained by a light : dark cycle and had an average free-running period of 23.7 h. Activity also appeared to be related to tidal times at the collection site because, under constant conditions, surface activity was suppressed at the time of nocturnal high tide and increased at the time of nocturnal low tide. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The effects of both short-term (2 weeks) and long-term (6 weeks) burial on the photosynthetic efficiency of four typical plant sub-communities of the machair sand dunes of the Outer Hebrides are described. Previous studies have examined the photosynthetic responses on individual species rather than the response at the community level. METHODS: Three replicate turves from four different sub-community types (foredune grassland, dune slack, three-year fallow and unploughed grassland) were subjected to short- and long-term burial treatments after acclimatisation in an unheated greenhouse for approximately 10 weeks. Three replicate control turves from each sub-community were left unburied. After treatment, photosynthetic rate was measured at 16-20 h and 40-44 h after re-exposure, using an infra-red gas analyser, with standardization by total leaf area for each turf. Effects of sub-community type, burial duration and time since re-exposure were analysed by 3-factor split-plot analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures for time since re-exposure in the subplots. KEY RESULTS: Buried turves were characterized by a low dark respiration rate, which may represent a maintenance response to burial. After removal of sand, each machair sub-community showed some capacity for an elastic photosynthetic response. There were no differences between the effects of short- and long-term burial on the photosynthetic efficiency of machair vegetation, although turves buried for 6 weeks generally attained photosynthetic rates approaching those of control rates sooner than turves buried for 2 weeks. Photosynthetic responses to burial varied between sub-communities, with the slack turves exhibiting the poorest capacity for recovery within the investigated 44-h period. CONCLUSIONS: In the machair environment, the ability to maintain photosynthetic equipment whilst buried, and the ability to bring about a relatively rapid reinstatement of photosynthetic mechanisms on emergence or exposure, is an important adaptation for survival. Survival is closely related to the ability of a plant to replenish carbohydrate reserves before the next burial event.  相似文献

Single myocardial cells from fetal mouse heart beat spontaneously in monolayer culture. In standard medium they maintained constant beating rates for at least 5 h at 37 °C. When the beats of single myocardial cells were stopped for a short time by treatment with EGTA, or slowed down by incubating the cells in medium of low pH, the original beating rates could be restored by replacing the cells in the original medium. The same procedure also restored the rates after they had been disturbed by incubating the cells in medium of low sodium and high potassium ion content. Moreover, the original beating rates could be restored after keeping the cells at 10 °C for 22–24 h, but not after keeping them at 37 °C for 22–24 h.  相似文献

Posidonia australis seed predation experiments conducted in three seagrass habitats (P. australis, Posidonia sinuosa, Halophila ovalis) and bare sand in Two Peoples Bay, Western Australia, showed higher predation rates in seagrass than bare sand, supporting general conclusions from two previous predation studies in Western Australia. However, much higher rates were noted in H. ovalis, compared to previous observations of very low rates in H. ovalis on Rottnest Island, Western Australia. We attribute these differences to gammaridean amphipods (family Lysianassidae) that were present in a detrital layer within the H. ovalis in Two Peoples Bay. Our data from Two Peoples Bay continues to add to the growing body of information showing high seed predation rates in most seagrass habitats by a diverse group of crustacean species.  相似文献

Population dynamics of marine invertebrates is controlled by a variety of abiotic and biotic factors. Among these, some have received lesser attention from marine ecologists because of their ‘discrete’ nature. This is the case of parasitism and bacterial load. In the present study, we focused on the role that both digenean trematodes and heterotrophic aerobic bacteria might play in the mortality and burying behaviour of cockles, Cerastoderma edule.The bivalves were sampled monthly during 1 year from two sites in Arcachon Bay (French Atlantic coast). Mortality rates were assessed after transferring in the laboratory normally buried and unburied (i.e. found lying at the sediment surface at low tide) cockles. Their digenean and bacterial loads were determined for both positions (normally buried and unburied). Mortality rate was significantly higher for cockles found out of the sediment at low tide, suggesting that this abnormal position was a prelude to cockles' death. Comparison of digenean load of cockles showed no significant difference between buried and unburied bivalves. In contrast, bacterial load was significantly higher in unburied cockles than in normally buried animals. The effect of high concentration of a marine bacterial strain (Pseudomonas fluorescens) on cockles' burying behaviour and mortality was tested in the laboratory. Results showed that these bacteria could trigger the emergence of animals from the sediment but did not cause cockles' death. These field observations and laboratory experiments suggest that bacteria, rather than digenean trematodes, could play a role in the emergence of cockles and, hence, affect their survival in the wild.  相似文献

The effect of mechanical work load on net proteolysis, amino acid catabolism and ammonia production was studied in isolated perfused beating or K+-arrested hearts. Net proteolysis was about 16 mumol/g dry wt. during 1h and was not affected by the mechanical work. The combined catabolic rate of the major amino acids was 7.1 mumol/g dry wt. in the beating heart and 2.1 mumol/g dry wt. in the arrested heart during the 1 h experimental period. The main differences lay in the deamination of aspartate plus glutamate, which was inhibited by 60% during low energy consumption, and in net alanine synthesis, which was increased by 94%. The ammonia production plus its conversion into amide nitrogen was 9.2 and 3.4 mumol/g dry wt. in the beating and arrested heart respectively during 1 h. The decrease in the total adenine nucleotide pool during the 1 h perfusion was very low, 1.0 and 0.5 mumol/g dry wt. in the beating and arrested hearts respectively, and did not contribute significantly to ammonia production. Thus ammonia production is dependent on the cellular energy state, whereas net proteolysis is not. The maximal capacities of the purine nucleotide cycle and the glutamate dehydrogenase reaction towards deamination were much higher than the observed ammonia-production rates. The anaplerotic role of amino acid catabolism in the myocardium is discussed.  相似文献

Exposure of Carcinus to a reduction in salinity is accompanied by an increase in oxygen consumption. The highest rates of oxygen consumption are found during the first 2–3 h after a reduction in salinity, after which oxygen consumption then declines, but to a higher than ‘normal’ level which is maintained throughout the period of exposure to low salinity. This augmented rate of oxygen consumption persists even after 3–4 days in water of reduced salinity and indicates that the respiratory rate of Carcinus does not acclimate rapidly to reduced salinity. The increased oxygen consumption is associated with an increase in ventilation volume resulting from an increase in the rate of beating of the scaphognathites, while oxygen utilization remains at a low level. Since the oxygen-transporting properties of the blood of Carcinus show little change under conditions of reduced salinity, the increased oxygen demand of the tissues is met by a rise in cardiac output resulting mainly from an increase in heart rate.  相似文献

Rhizophora apiculata leaf litter decomposition and the influence of this process on phosphorus (P) dynamics were studied in mangrove and sand flat sediments at the Bangrong mangrove forest, Phuket, Thailand. The remaining P in the mangrove leaf litter increased with time of decomposition to 174% and 220% of the initial amount in the litter in sand flat and mangrove sediment, respectively, although about 50% of the dry weight had been lost. The incorporation of P into the litter was probably associated with humic acids and metal bridging, especially caused by iron (Fe), which also accumulated in considerable amounts in the litter (5-10 times initial concentration). The addition of leaves to the sediment caused increased concentrations of dissolved reactive phosphate (DRP) in the porewater, especially in sand flat sediment. The DRP probably originated from Fe-bound P in the sediment, because decomposition of buried leaf litter caused increased respiration and reduced the redox potential (Eh) in the sediments. Binding of P to refractory organic material and oxidized Fe at the sediment-water interface explains the low release of DRP from the sediment. This mechanism also explains the generally low DRP concentration in the mangrove porewater, the low nutrient content of the R. apiculata leaves, but also the higher total sediment P concentration of the mangrove sediment as compared to sediments outside the mangrove. Both the low release rates for DRP from the sediment and the accumulation of P associated with leaf litter decomposition tend to preserve P in the sediments.  相似文献

Physiological parameters associated with burying were investigated in the Dungeness crab, Cancer magister, and the red rock crab, Cancer productus. Ventilation frequency of the branchial chambers increased while the crabs were burying, this was associated with the greater oxygen demand of the tissues. The number of ventilatory reversals in C. magister increased in number as well as in duration and magnitude when the crabs were buried, which functioned to clear the branchial chambers of sediment. In contrast, the number of ventilatory reversals in C. productus decreased. On the surface of the sand, cardiac parameters (heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output) of both species remained stable. During the burial process, there was a large increase in cardiac output which was afforded primarily by an increased stroke volume of the heart. Once buried, cardiac output declined in both species; this was due to a decrease in stroke volume in C. productus, but a decreased heart rate in C. magister. There were also differences in haemolymph flows through each arterial system. During the burying process, both species increased haemolymph flow to the muscles of the limbs via the sternal artery. Once buried haemolymph flows to the limbs decreased, and increased flow to eyestalks and antennae via the anterior aorta occurred. Perfusion of the digestive organs via the anterolateral and hepatic arteries did not change when the crabs were buried. There was an increase in flow through the posterior aorta, of C. magister, but flow through this artery did not change in C. productus. Periods of spontaneous cardiac arrest were observed in both species while resting on the surface. These increased in duration in C. productus when buried, but there was no change in C. magister. Changes in ventilatory and cardiac variables were closely linked on the surface, but tended to uncouple when the animals were buried. The physiological responses of C. magister resembled those of true sand-dwelling crabs, whereas the responses of C. productus paralleled those of crabs that only bury occasionally in the substrate. Although these two species often occur sympatrically, they employ different physiological mechanisms when buried in the sediment.  相似文献
