A detailed quantitative calcareous nannofossil analysis has been performed on 138 samples from the astronomically dated Monte del Casino section with the aim to identify and precisely date the most important calcareous nannofossil events across the Tortonian/Messinian boundary in the Mediterranean, and to unravel paleoceanographic conditions at times of sapropel formation during the Late Miocene. From the biostratigraphic perspective, the genus Amaurolithus provides three successive first occurrences (FOs): A. primus, A. cf. amplificus and A. delicatus, dated at 7.446, 7.434 and 7.226 Ma, respectively. Other bioevents include the base and top of the `small reticulofenestrids' Acme, dated at 7.644 and 6.697 Ma, and the FO, FCO and LO of R. rotaria, dated at 7.405, 7.226 and 6.771 Ma. These events appear to be useful in improving biostratigraphic resolution in the Tortonian–Messinian boundary interval, at least for the Mediterranean. Quantitative analysis revealed changes in the calcareous nannofossil assemblage associated with the sapropels. The observed fluctuations suggest a single mechanism for sapropel formation in the Mediterranean during the late Neogene. Sapropels are characterized by a decrease in the total number of coccoliths, interpreted mainly as a reduction in calcareous nannofossil production due to increased siliceous plankton production during spring blooms; and an increase in reworked specimens, interpreted to reflect enhanced continental input via river run-off. An increase in abundance of the genus Rhabdosphaera can be explained by opportunistic behavior at the end of the spring bloom when nutrient levels start to become impoverished. As far as sea surface water temperature indicators are concerned, warm water D. pentaradiatus shows positive fluctuations in sapropels while cooler water D. intercalaris and C. pelagicus show negative fluctuations.  相似文献

Abstract: A rich coral‐associated decapod assemblage is recorded from the ‘Depiru Beds’ of the upper part of the Upper Coralline Limestone (Messinian, Upper Miocene), from the island of Malta. Nineteen species within 17 genera have been discovered, where 14 genera are new for Malta. Four new species are described, namely Micippa annamariae sp. nov., Pilumnus scaber sp. nov., Panopeus muelleri sp. nov. and Herbstia melitense sp. nov. Herbstia melitense sp. nov. constitutes the first record of the genus from the fossil record in the Mediterranean region. This discovery more than doubles the number of known fossil decapod species from Malta. The fossil bivalve Jouannetia (J.) semicaudata Des Moulins, 1830 and the extant decapod Maja goltziana D’Oliveira, 1888, are also recorded for the first time from Malta. Other Neogene coral‐associated decapod assemblages are investigated and correlated with the new assemblage from Malta. The migration of taxa between the Mediterranean region and the Paratethys, particularly during the Lower Badenian (Langhian), is evidenced by the strong affinity of the Maltese decapod assemblage with that of the Middle Miocene Badenian assemblages from Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. Upper Miocene, Messinian assemblages from Spain, Algeria and Morocco are also similar to that from Malta.  相似文献

A quantitative study was performed on planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils of the astronomically dated Late Miocene Pissouri section (Cyprus). Our results confirm the reliability of well-known planktonic foraminiferal events as Catapsydraxparvulus LO (Last Occurrence), sinistral coiling change of Globorotaliascitula, Globorotaliamiotumida group FRO (First Regular Occurrence), Globorotalianicolae FO (First occurrence) and LO, sinistral coiling change of Neogloboquadrinaacostaensis and also of several important calcareous nannofossil events (Amaurolithusprimus FO, Amaurolithusdelicatus FO, Reticulofenestrarotaria FO and FCO). Integrated planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton data contribute to an enhanced time resolution of the Tortonian - early Messinian interval in the Levantine basin, and contribute to detailed correlations throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, we compare methodologies commonly used in calcareous plankton biostratigraphy, and shortly outline sources of bias that can influence the results of stratigraphic studies.  相似文献

Messinian (Uppermost Miocene) outcrops near the town of Oran in western Algeria yielded rich bryozoan faunas: 188 species and forms. Bryozoans were studied in ten different deposits and 27 horizons representing various marly and calcareous facies. The number of species is lowest in the coral reefs (51), intermediate in the coralline-algae limestones (95), and highest in the mark(167). Also, zoarial growth forms are more diverse in marly deposits than in calcareous ones. These differences are interpreted in terms of bottom substrate, depth, deposition rate, and hydrodynamic conditions. An analysis based on zoarial growth forms and known bathymetric ranges of species still living gives more precise depth indications for each studied assemblage. A detailed survey of these assemblages in several sections shows that a gradual lowering of regional sea level occurred during the Messinian. From the presence of a number of warm-water bryozoan taxa, a higher temperature than in the Present Mediterranean sea is also favored. □ Algeria, Bryozoa, calcareous algae, mark Messinian, paleoecology, reefs.  相似文献

The study of otolith assemblages from the pre-evaporitic Messinian deposits allows the reconstruction of a fauna of 79 taxa of which 35 could be identified at the specific level. Three of these are new: Diaphus rubus, Myctophum coppa, and Uranoscopus ciabatta. The assemblages reflect mainly a neritic environment influenced by the oceanic realm. Analysis of the global present-day geographic distribution of 42 of the recognised Messinian genera indicates that 88% of these are still living in the Mediterranean, 98% in the Atlantic and 78% in the Indo-Pacific realm. These results are in good agreement with the evolutionary trends documented for the Oligocene and Miocene teleost fauna, specifically an increase in percentage of genera inhabiting the modern Mediterranean, a very high percentage of Atlantic and Indo-Pacific genera, and a slight fall of the importance of present-day Indo-Pacific genera from the Rupelian up to the Late Miocene. Analysing the composition of the Early Messinian fauna at the level of nominal species indicates that about 53% of the species represented in the assemblages are still living in the Recent Mediterranean, and that a significant number of these were already present in the Tortonian. It is interesting that these species are mainly neritic. This seems to confirm that the close affinity of the fossil assemblage with the present-day Mediterranean neritic fauna, which was already recorded at the genus level for the Rupelian fauna, persists during the Neogene and continues until the Pleistocene.  相似文献

During the Messinian, the Mediterranean area experienced fast and prominent paleoenvironmental changes, culminating in the so-called Messinian Salinity Crisis, with the deposition of the evaporitic series. This work investigates the micropaleontological assemblages in the pre-evaporitic sediments of the Sant’Agata Fossili Marls (SAF) of the Pollenzo section (Cuneo area, North Western Italy). A semiquantitative analysis is carried out on the upper part of the marly and pelitic sediments of the SAF underlying the first gypsum bed, ascribed to the Vena del Gesso Fm. (VDF). The studied interval belongs to the planktonic foraminifer Globorotalia conomiozea Zone and “non distinctive Zone” of Iaccarino and to the calcareous nannofossil MNN11b/c Zone of Raffi et al. (1998, 2003) ( [Raffi et al., 1998] and [Raffi et al., 2003]). Decrease of diversity and abundance of the foraminifer and calcareous nannofossil assemblages is recorded 12 m below the VDG and clearly reflects environmental stress. From bottom to top, six paleoecological events are recorded: (1) the first peak abundance of “small” Reticulofenestra and the last recovery (LR) of planktonic foraminifers; (2) the peak abundance of Pontosphaera japonica and the last recovery of warm water taxa Discoaster spp.; (3) the last recovery of benthic foraminifers; (4) the co-occurring peak abundances of Helicosphaera carteri and Sphenolithus abies, and the last recovery of warm water taxa Amaurolithus spp.; (5) the second peak of “small” Reticulofenestra; (6) the definitive disappearance of calcareous nannofossils. These paleoecological events describe a progressive isolation of the basin from the world ocean and increasingly stressed environment (LR planktonic foraminifers; LR Discoaster spp.), increasing dysoxic to anoxic conditions at the sea floor (LR benthic foraminifers), shallowing of the water column (peak of H. carteri), increasing salinity in surface waters (peak of S. abies), and enhanced nutrient concentration in surface waters (peak of “small” Reticulofenestra); these are related to paleoenvironmental changes predating gypsum deposition at Pollenzo and affecting the whole Mediterranean basin.  相似文献

The Late Tortonian-Early Messinian Abad Member in the Sorbas Basin, south-east Spain contains abundant foraminifera. Planktonic foraminifera have been used to reconstruct the environmental conditions that developed within the basin. Benthonic foraminifera reveal a detailed picture of the palaeoenvironment. After an initial deepening episode, from upper epibathyal ( c . 200 m) depths to lower epibathyal ( c . 1000 m) depths, the basin progressively shallowed to shelf depths ( c . 100 m); this palaeobathymetric reconstruction thus describes an initial rapid transgressive episode, a highstand and a regressive phase; the basin water mass became progressively warmer, and yet there was no significant increase in salinity or oxygen level in the water mass. The lack of any microfossil evidence to support an increase in the salinity levels towards the top of the Abad Member indicates a rapid environmental switch from normal marine conditions during the deposition of the Abad Member to hypersaline conditions during deposition of the overlying Yesares Member and precipitation of great thicknesses of gypsum. This research illustrates the necessity for high resolution sampling, approximate to the standard interval (10 feet: c . 3 metres) used in industrial boreholes, for Mediterranean Late Miocene stratigraphies, and indicates that all previous palaeoenvironmental studies on the Sorbas Basin have had inadequate sampling regimes which do not represent the evolving environmental conditions of the Abad Member.  相似文献

Late Miocene Lago-Mare macrofossiliferous sediments were recovered in the northeastern Tyrrhenian Sea by dredging the continental slope off Gorgona Island, Tuscan Archipelago, at 300-470 m depth. The fossil assemblage consists of a rich lymnocardiid bivalve fauna dominated by Pontalmyra ex gr. P. incerta (Deshayes), associated with Dreissena ex gr. D. rostriformis (Deshayes), Pontalmyra cf. partschi (Mayer), “Limnocardium” sp., the gastropods Melanopsis narzolina (D’Archiac), Melanopsis sp. and cf. Saccoia sp. All bivalve taxa recognized at species level are of Paratethyan (Pontian) affinity and widespread in the Late Miocene of the Mediterranean Basin while M. narzolina has so far only recorded from the Mediterranean Basin. This finding represents the most diverse Lago-Mare macrofauna reported thus far from any submerged location in the Mediterranean Basin and documents that the post-evaporitic Cusercoli Formation contributes to the syn-rift neoautochthonous units of this sector of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea.  相似文献

A fossil slender mola (Tetraodontiformes, Molidae) is described from the Miocene (Messinian) of the Chelif Basin, Algeria. The material consists of a single individual largely incomplete, solely represented by part of the anal-fin pterygiophores complement. The specimen is referred to the genus Ranzania because of the elongate slender morphology and thick and well-ossified consistence of the bones, which are also characterized by a dense and moderately spongy texture. However, it has been left unnamed, awaiting more complete and better-preserved material. This is the first occurrence of the genus Ranzania, and more generally of the family Molidae, in the Messinian of the Mediterranean. It provides new data about the structure and diversity of Miocene pelagic fish communities of the Chelif Basin.  相似文献

This study is a preliminary quantitative analysis of Paleocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages of the Tenida area (Egypt) in order to establish a detailed biostratigraphic framework as well as to reconstruct the paleoclimatic trends. A total of 48 samples with an average sample spacing of 1.5 m allowed the identification of 63 calcareous nannofossil species belonging to 19 different genera. The preservation of the studied samples varies from poor to moderate and is characterized by the frequent presence of small frangible placoliths, and nannoliths. This study recognizes three calcareous nannofossil biozones in the Danian-Thanetian time interval; Chiasmolithus danicus (NP3) Zone, Ellipsolithus macellus (NP4) Zone, and Heliolithus kleinpellii (NP6) Zone. Moreover, the multivariate statistical analysis of the calcareous nannofossil communities reveals a relationship between the distribution of these nannofossil assemblages and variations in paleoclimatic trends. Accordingly, the relative abundances of Coccolithus pelagicus in addition to nine calcareous nannofossil genera along with the diversity and preservation indices of calcareous nannofossil elements have been used to elucidate changes in paleoclimatic trends. Based on the cyclic change from cold to warm climates, it was possible to subdivide the Paleocene Period recorded in the Tenida section into four paleoclimatic intervals. The oldest is a global cooling trend spanning 2.01 Myr long, starting in the early Paleocene (Danian) during the deposition of the lower part of the Kharga Shale Member. This cooling trend is followed by a ~ 0.56 Myr warming trend during deposition of the middle part of the Kharga Shale Member that was followed by a return to a cooling mode, with an estimated duration of roughly 1.67 Myr. The last interval includes a 0.39 Myr long period at the Selandian/Thanetian boundary interval, which is dominated by a global warming trend during deposition of the upper part of the Upper Kharga Shale Member.  相似文献

Studies of fossil molluscs from Early Miocene deposits at Napak, Uganda, reveal that between 20 and 18.5 Ma, there were various kinds of palaeoenvironments on the flanks of the volcano ranging from forest to open country. The basal Iriri Member contains fluvial deposits from which freshwater gastropods and bivalves have been collected. The younger Napak Member is subaerial in facies, and has yielded a predominantly forest assemblage of gastropods, but with some indications of open country species at one of the sites. Napak has yielded a rich and diverse primate fauna, including the large ape Ugandapithecus major, the small ape Micropithecus clarki, the earliest known cercopithecid in the world (Prohylobates sp.) and several galagids (Mioeuoticus bishopi) among other less well-known taxa.  相似文献

Dickinsonia is an iconic fossil of the Ediacara biota (~575–539 Ma). It was previously known from siliciclastic successions of the White Sea assemblage in Australia, Baltica, and possibly India. Here we describe Dickinsonia sp. from the terminal Ediacaran Shibantan Member limestone (ca. 551–543 Ma) of the Dengying Formation in the Yangtze Gorges area of South China. The stratigraphic distribution of Ediacara-type fossils in the Shibantan Member indicates that this biota uniquely preserves both the White Sea and Nama assemblages in stratigraphic succession. The new data presented here suggests that Dickinsonia had wider paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental distributions, implying its strong dispersal capability and environmental tolerance.  相似文献

Turtle remains are common in the Miocene-Holocene deposits of Greece, and are a key focus of the growing research interest in Neogene herpetofaunas from the Aegean region. Some of the most important finds include one of Europe's stratigraphically youngest pleurodiran taxa, Nostimochelone lampra, from the Early Miocene of Macedonia, together with arguably the richest record of fossil tortoises from the Eastern Mediterranean. This incorporates the presently oldest definitive representatives of the quintessential genus Testudo sensu stricto from the Late Miocene of Attica and Macedonia, and numerous specimens of the colossal (carapace ∼2 m-length) testudinid Cheirogaster from Late Miocene-Late Pliocene sediments in southern and northern Greece, as well as on the eastern Aegean islands of Samos and Lesvos. Tantalising, but as yet unconfirmed Miocene accounts of the geoemydid Mauremys in Macedonia, and indeterminate emydid-like remains from Euboea, also provide potentially significant range extensions. Although hampered by a historically sparse documentation, the fossil turtles of Greece are a significant resource that record both assemblage changes and the origin of modern lineages.  相似文献

A major deterioration in global climate occurred through the Eocene–Oligocene time interval, characterized by long-term cooling in both terrestrial and marine environments. During this long-term cooling trend, however, recent studies have documented several short-lived warming and cooling phases. In order to further investigate high-latitude climate during these events, we developed a high-resolution calcareous nannofossil record from ODP Site 748 Hole B for the interval spanning the late middle Eocene to the late Oligocene (~ 42 to 26 Ma). The primary goals of this study were to construct a detailed biostratigraphic record and to use nannofossil assemblage variations to interpret short-term changes in surface-water temperature and nutrient conditions. The principal nannofossil assemblage variations are identified using a temperate-warm-water taxa index (Twwt), from which three warming and five cooling events are identified within the middle Eocene to the earliest Oligocene interval. Among these climatic trends, the cooling event at ~ 39 Ma (Cooling Event B) is recorded here for the first time. Variations in fine-fraction δ18O values at Site 748 are associated with changes in the Twwt index, supporting the idea that significant short-term variability in surface-water conditions occurred in the Kerguelen Plateau area during the middle and late Eocene. Furthermore, ODP Site 748 calcareous nannofossil paleoecology confirms the utility of these microfossils for biostratigraphic, paleoclimatic, and paleoceanographic reconstructions at Southern Ocean sites during the Paleogene.  相似文献

The stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental context of the Verduno fossil vertebrate locality is discussed herein based on its rodent record. The Verduno section crops out in the southern part of the Tertiary Piedmont Basin (TPB), and can be included in the Messinian post-evaporitic Cassano Spinola Fm., chronologically corresponding to the so-called Lago-Mare event. Rodents are represented by a relatively rich assemblage. Murids are by far the most diverse and abundant, with at least four taxa, including the common Centralomys benericettii and Paraethomys meini, and the rare Apodemus gudrunae and Occitanomys sp. Cricetids are represented by a single species, Apocricetus cf. A. barrierei. Muscardinus aff. M. vireti appears to be the only glirid present at Verduno. The Verduno rodent assemblage shares some taxa with other Messinian post-evaporitic localities from Italy bearing continental vertebrate remains, such as Brisighella (central Italy) and Moncucco Torinese (NW Italy) (e.g., C. benericettii, P. meini) and, possibly, with Ciabòt Cagna (NW Italy). However, the general structure of these four Messinian assemblages displays substantial differences, which may reflect different palaeoenvironmental conditions.  相似文献

A stratigraphical chart of marine ostracoda from Lower Miocene to Recent is established. Selected species (approximatively 220) are those morphologicaly well characterized and known from different parts of the Mediterranean area. It appears that: • lower Miocene ostracodes are still poorly known; • specific diversity is high during the Tortonian and the Lower Messinian before the complete disappearance of marine Mediterranean species during the Upper Messinian évaporitic episodes; • during the early Pliocene, about half of the Upper Miocene marine species are reintroduced with the Atlantic waters; other species migrate for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea by the same way; • at the end of the Pliocene or at the beginning of the Pleistocene several species known in Mediterranean since the Middle Miocene or before, such as Cytherella sp. gr. transversa and Ruggieria tetraptera, as well some “nordic guests” such as Hemicythere villosa and Cythere lutea, appear. This work is an opportunity to confirme a Late Miocene age for the Neogene of Skyros (Aegean Sea), to assign the “Upper Pliocene” of Terquem to the Lower Pleistocene and to refute the existence of a pliocene psychrosphere.  相似文献

Middle to late Miocene calcareous nannofossil data of ODP Site 1085 from the eastern South Atlantic off Namibia were analysed to document spatial and temporal changes in surface-ocean circulation, upwelling initiation, and associated productivity.

Our data show that calcareous nannofossils constitute a significant part of the carbonate fraction throughout the investigated interval from 12.5 to 7.7 million years (Ma). Highest numbers of calcareous nannofossils (up to 38,000 × 106 nannofossils g− 1 sediment) were observed during the intervals 9.9 to 9.7 and 8.7 to 8.0 Ma. These elevated numbers of calcareous nannofossils may generally be linked to the initiation of upwelling at about 10 Ma in the studied region. In contrast, diminished numbers of calcareous nannoplankton, as in the interval 9.6 to 9.0 Ma, probably characterise time intervals of weaker productivity resulting in a decrease of nannofossil carbonate contents in the sediments of Site 1085. This decrease in nannofossil production could be one possible explanation for the major CaCO3 depression in between 9.6 and 9.0 Ma. Coccoliths of the genus Reticulofenestra are the most abundant taxa. Their occurrences are characterised by changes in the investigated time interval. In addition, Coccolithus pelagicus, Calcidiscus leptoporus and Umbilicosphaera spp. contribute a common part of the assemblage. Calcareous nannofossils account for more than half of the carbonate, with peak contribution up to 80% at 8.8 Ma.  相似文献

A complete taxonomic review of Neogene birds of continental Asia is provided. To date, avifauna from the latter half of the Miocene and Pliocene of Central Asia (Mongolia and adjacent regions of Inner Asia) are most thoroughly investigated. Available data enable a reconstruction of successive replacement of Early and Middle Miocene avifaunas by communities of the Recent type. Middle Miocene avifaunas of Mongolia include a great number of extinct genera and species, many of which were widespread in Eurasia. Extant genera became dominant in the Late Miocene and taxa close to living species appear in the Late Pliocene fossil record. Late Pliocene communities of birds of Central Asia were complex in genesis, composed of Miocene relicts (Struthio), immigrants from the European regions of the Palearctic (phasianid Plioperdix), North American immigrants (Calcarius), and also autochthonous elements, the origin of which is apparently connected with the arid belt of Central Asia (diverse passerines).  相似文献

Abstract: Eleven randomly chosen outcrops in the Miocene Pakhna Formation of Cyprus were sampled for holoplanktonic Mollusca. Four species of Heteropoda were found, and 24 of Pteropoda, a substantial increase from the two species recorded until now from the Miocene of Cyprus. One pteropod species, Peracle charlotteae sp. nov. (Gastropoda, Pseudothecosomata), is introduced. Age assignments based on holoplanktonic molluscs for the 11 localities are as follows: Langhian (Alassa 1–4), (Serravallian?) Tortonian to Messinian (Episkopi 1), Tortonian (Agios Tychon, Tokhni and the Maroni Marlstone of Khirokitia 1–2) and Tortonian to Early Messinian (Episkopi 2). These age determinations in some cases are at odds with those from previous publications based on calcareous nannofossils and Foraminifera. The sediments underlying the Amathus Channel outcrop yielded insufficient fauna for definitive dating, but we suggest are younger than Late Serravallian. At some localities, particularly in the Alassa area, pteropod assemblages are strongly variable on a bed‐by‐bed basis, and this offers possibilities for future refined biostratigraphical interpretations. This is the first substantial holoplanktonic mollusc fauna described from the eastern Mediterranean basin and allows correlation with assemblages in the central Mediterranean and elsewhere.  相似文献

Quantitative analyses of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Holes 334 and 410 demonstrate that subpolar and subtropical faunal provinces existed in the North Atlantic during the late Miocene. Climatic oscillations are clearly recorded in Hole 410 by variations in abundance of the Neogloboquadrina subpolar assemblage. These climatic oscillations have a period of about 1 m.y. Higher frequency oscillations with a periodicity of one to several hundred thousand years are evident from about 6.5 to 7.5 m.y. and are probably present throughout the entire late Miocene.A revised age of 7.0 m.y. is proposed for the first occurrence of the calcareous nannofossil Amaurolithus primus (the Amaurolithus datum).  相似文献
