This article analyzes the discourse styles, including the linguistic practices, of a group of African American high school students and offers a twofold conclusion: (1) Ebonics or Black English is the norm against which all other speech practices are evaluated by the students at the research site and (2) "the standard"—that is, the standard English dialect—is constructed as a vernacular. As a vernacular, this discourse is not privileged; indeed, it is "dissed" (disrespected) and is only "leased" by the students on a daily basis from nine to three. This linguistic practice is centrally implicated in the postulated guerrilla warfare at the school. With data from a predominantly African American high school in Washington, D.C., the effects of this practice on African American academic achievement are documented. Several policy implications are also noted.  相似文献

The human polyomavirus JC (JC virus), a small, circular, double-stranded DNA virus, has a worldwide distribution and is excreted harmlessly in urine by 20% to 70% of adults. DNA sequence analysis has identified seven distinct genotypes that likely coevolved with modern humans, although the mode of virus transmission is unknown. Type 1 is European in its distribution. Types 2 and 7 are Asian, while Types 3 and 6 are African. Type 4, closely related to Type 1, is of uncertain origin, having been found in population groups in parts of Europe and in the United States, but not in Africa. Here we have studied the JCV partial genomic DNA sequences amplified by polymerase chain reaction techniques from urines of an urban, mainly African American population cohort from Washington, D.C. The predominant genotype identified was Type 4 (32/78 JCV strains, 41%). Type 1 strain was found in 32% of African Americans, while JCV Type 3 strain was found in 18% of African Americans. These African strains have persisted in modern African Americans after 200 to 400 years of minority existence and genetic admixture in the New World. An ancient West African genotype, Type 6, was absent in this African American cohort. However, one Type 6 strain was found in a patient from Sierra Leone (West Africa), domiciled in the United States for 20 years. Type 2A, the most common subtype in Native Americans, was seen in only two African-Americans (3%). A Type 7 strain, previously reported only in Taiwan and South China, was identified in a Vietnamese immigrant. These data support the history of African origin, migration, and genetic admixture of modern African Americans. Analysis of JCV strains in the present American populations provides a novel tool for reconstructing human migrations and genetic admixture in the New World.  相似文献

In this article, I examine West African foods sold mainly in specialty grocery stores, focusing on how technologies used in food production in West Africa are referenced in the brand names and packaging of processed African foods sold in the United States. Through their association with "timeless" West African food-processing techniques, such foods evoke memories of childhood and home. Yet the transformation of West African foods through new technologies of processing, packaging, and branding reflects different time and health concerns of West African immigrants living in the United States. Through their purchase of time-saving, mass-produced, and hygienically packaged foodstuffs, which are ideologically similar to but technologically very different from the production processes and cooking in Africa, West Africans in the United States use food to maintain social relations with their particular families, hometown associations, and religious groups, while also constituting national, regional, and global connections through the reinvention of food traditions.  相似文献

Tropical sub-Saharan regions are considered to be the geographical origin of Drosophila melanogaster. Starting from there, the species colonized the rest of the world after the last glaciation about 10 000 years ago. Consistent with this demographic scenario, African populations have been shown to harbour higher levels of microsatellite and sequence variation than cosmopolitan populations. Nevertheless, limited information is available on the genetic structure of African populations. We used X chromosomal microsatellite variation to study the population structure of D. melanogaster populations using 13 sampling sites in North, West and East Africa. These populations were compared to six European and one North American population. Significant population structure was found among African D. melanogaster populations. Using a Bayesian method for inferring population structure we detected two distinct groups of populations among African D. melanogaster. Interestingly, the comparison to cosmopolitan D. melanogaster populations indicated that one of the divergent African groups is closely related to cosmopolitan flies. Low, but significant levels of differentiation were observed for sub-Saharan D. melanogaster populations from West and East Africa.  相似文献

The Atlantic slave trade promoted by West European empires (15th-19th centuries) forcibly moved at least 11 million people from Africa, including about one-third from west-central Africa, to European and American destinations. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genome has retained an imprint of this process, but previous analyses lacked west-central African data. Here, we make use of an African database of 4,860 mtDNAs, which include 948 mtDNA sequences from west-central Africa and a further 154 from the southwest, and compare these for the first time with a publicly available database of 1,148 African Americans from the United States that contains 1,053 mtDNAs of sub-Saharan ancestry. We show that >55% of the U.S. lineages have a West African ancestry, with <41% coming from west-central or southwestern Africa. These results are remarkably similar to the most up-to-date analyses of the historical record.  相似文献

The genus Ptychopetulum (Olacaceae), disjunct between South America (2 spp.) and Africa (2 spp. West Africa; I sp. Rhodesia), exhibits predominantly diploporate pollen among the West African species and predominantly triporate pollen among the South American taxa. An analysis of aperture evolution suggests two possible schemes of aperture evolution for the genus. Scheme I avers the independent origin of both triporate and diploporate apertures from a basic brevicolpate condition while scheme II proposes a basic diploporate condition in which the diploporate apertures have migrated to the equator, fused to form brevicolpi and have ultimately become reduced to pores. Pollen evidence in support of both schemes is discussed. The distribution of aperture types within the genus also suggests West Africa as the original site of aperture evolution and South America as the second area of aperture development with types traceable to West African stock.  相似文献

To better understand the population substructure of African Americans living in coastal South Carolina, we used restriction site polymorphisms and an insertion/deletion in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to construct seven-position haplotypes across 1,395 individuals from Sierra Leone, Africa, from U.S. European Americans, and from the New World African-derived populations of Jamaica, Gullah-speaking African Americans of the South Carolina Sea Islands (Gullahs), African Americans living in Charleston, South Carolina, and West Coast African Americans. Analyses showed a high degree of similarity within the New World African-derived populations, where haplotype frequencies and diversities were similar. Phi-statistics indicated that very little genetic differentiation has occurred within New World African-derived populations, but that there has been significant differentiation of these populations from Sierra Leoneans. Genetic distance estimates indicated a close relationship of Gullahs and Jamaicans with Sierra Leoneans, while African Americans living in Charleston and the West Coast were progressively more distantly related to the Sierra Leoneans. We observed low maternal European American admixture in the Jamaican and Gullah samples (m = 0.020 and 0.064, respectively) that increased sharply in a clinal pattern from Charleston African Americans to West Coast African Americans (m = 0.099 and 0.205, respectively). The appreciably reduced maternal European American admixture noted in the Gullah indicates that the Gullah may be uniquely situated to allow genetic epidemiology studies of complex diseases in African Americans with low European American admixture.  相似文献

Domestic dogs have an ancient origin and a long history in Africa. Nevertheless, the timing and sources of their introduction into Africa remain enigmatic. Herein, we analyse variation in mitochondrial DNA(mt DNA) D-loop sequences from 345 Nigerian and 37 Kenyan village dogs plus 1530 published sequences of dogs from other parts of Africa, Europe and West Asia. All Kenyan dogs can be assigned to one of three haplogroups(matrilines; clades): A, B, and C, while Nigerian dogs can be assigned to one of four haplogroups A, B, C, and D. None of the African dogs exhibits a matrilineal contribution from the African wolf(Canis lupus lupaster). The genetic signal of a recent demographic expansion is detected in Nigerian dogs from West Africa. The analyses of mitochondrial genomes reveal a maternal genetic link between modern West African and North European dogs indicated by sub-haplogroup D1(but not the entire haplogroup D) coalescing around 12,000 years ago. Incorporating molecular anthropological evidence,we propose that sub-haplogroup D1 in West African dogs could be traced back to the late-glacial dispersals, potentially associated with human hunter-gatherer migration from southwestern Europe.  相似文献

Four natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster, three from Guadeloupe and one from Martinique (French West Indies), were studied with respect to four types of genetically determined traits, namely allozyme frequencies, morphology, ethanol tolerance, and oviposition rhythm. These populations were compared to European (France) and tropical African populations, and, with respect to allozymes alone, to an American population. The four populations from the West Indies were found to be genetically similar; this may reflect a common historical origin, or an adaptive response to similar environmental pressures or possibly some gene flow between the two islands. The comparisons with distant populations led to different conclusions depending upon the trait considered. In the case of allozymes, flies from the West Indies were more similar to tropical African populations than to an American population from Texas, but the main difference observed was in comparison with European populations. The morphology of the West Indies flies resembled a smaller, tropical type, but the size was even smaller than observed in Africa. Both ethanol tolerance and oviposition rhythm were intermediate between flies from tropical Africa and Europe. All these results can be explained in terms of interactions between selection imposed by a tropical environment and the genetic properties of the founder population which first colonized the islands.  相似文献

The African sugarcane stalk borer, Eldona saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and is an important insect pest of maize and sugarcane. The insect shows significant variation in behaviour, host plant and natural enemy guild in different regions. Several attempts to redistribute the natural enemies of E. saccharina from West Africa to South Africa were unsuccessful. The significant behavioural, host plant and natural enemy variations as well as failures of biocontrol attempts evoked a hypothesis of genetic diversification. To evaluate this hypothesis a molecular analysis was conducted on geographically isolated populations of E. saccharina from East, North, South and West Africa, using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) region of the mitochondrial genome. The results revealed that E. saccharina populations are separated into four major units corresponding to the West Africa, Rift Valley, South/East Africa and southern African populations. Mitochondrial DNA divergence among the four populations ranged from 1% to 4.98%. To examine the impact of the observed genetic variation on the fertility of inter-population crosses, a mating experiment was conducted between the Rift valley and South African population to produce an F1 generation, and these were backcrossed with the South African parent population. Fertility of eggs produced by the F1/parent population cross was significantly reduced when compared to fertility of the "true" South African line, and the F1/F1 cross. The contributions of the observed genetic differences and inter population incompatibility for the failure of previous biocontrol attempts are discussed and recommendations on future biocontrol practices are given.  相似文献

Aim To reveal the phylogeographic relationship of disjunct specimens of Tristicha trifaria (Bory ex Willd.) Spreng., a member of the Podostemaceae river‐weed family, which is distributed exceptionally widely, but disjunctly, in Africa and the Americas. Location Brazil, Mexico, Ghana, Tanzania and Madagascar. Methods The chloroplast matK and rbcL genes, a trnK intron, the trnS‐trnG intergenic spacer (IGS), the two IGSs of trnT‐trnL‐trnF, a trnL intron, and nuclear ribosomal ITS regions were sequenced and analysed. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods. Results The T. trifaria samples analysed were separated into two groups in a rooted tree based on a combined matK/rbcL/ITS dataset; one contained the West African and all of the American samples, and the other contained the East African and Madagascan samples. An unrooted tree obtained from a combined analysis of all the chloroplast DNA and nuclear ITS data showed that a sample from West Africa was sister to an American T. trifaria group. Main conclusions The American and West African T. trifaria are closely related, despite the great distance between their locations. This observation, along with a tree of the whole Tristichoideae subfamily and estimated divergence times, suggests that an ancestor of T. trifaria migrated from Asia to Africa during the early Tertiary, and that this was followed by further westward migration to the Americas at the end of the Miocene or in the early Pliocene.  相似文献

Summary The survey of enzyme polymorphism in West African pearl millet cultivars reported by Tostain et al. 1987 has been extended to include populations from other regions of Africa and from India. The eight enzyme systems studied included: alcohol dehydrogenase, -esterase, catalase, phosphoglucoisomerase, phosphoglucomutase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, and malate dehydrogenase. One-hundred-ninety-nine populations of millet were analyzed, including 74 populations studied earlier. No new enzyme diversity was observed. Intrapopulation diversity ranged from 70%–90% of the total diversity, depending on their regions of origin. Four principal groups were distinguished in the following decreasing order of diversity: early-maturing cultivars from West and East Africa, late — maturing cultivars from West and East Africa, cultivars from India, and cultivars from southern Africa. The early-maturing cultivars were distributed between two principal focal points from East Africa in the East to Mali in the West. In the center were found millets from Niger which were most diverse. Indian and southern African cultivars were distinct, with the former appearing relatively similar to those of Niger, and the latter somewhat similar to late-maturing cultivars from West Africa, a diverse group that included late-maturing cultivars from East Africa. Based on the results obtained, an evolutionary hypothesis proposed here includes: multiple domestications in the Sahel, creation of early-maturing cultivars and their migration eastwards to India plus a southwards migration to Sudanian zone, and creation of late-maturing cultivars and their migration simultaneously westwards, eastwards, and southwards to southern Africa.  相似文献

In West Africa, Trichinella infection was documented in humans and animals from Senegal in the 1960s, and the biological characters of one isolate showed a lower infectivity to domestic pigs and rodents when compared with that of a Trichinella spiralis pig isolate from Europe. To identify the Trichinella species present in West Africa, a survey was conducted in a total of 160 wild animals in the Republic of Guinea. Three Viverridae, one true civet (Viverra civetta) and two African palm civets (Nandinia binotata) from the Fouta Djallon Massif, Pilimini Subprefecture, were found positive by artificial digestion of muscle samples. Trichinella larvae from these three viverrids were identified as Trichinella britovi and no difference was detected in three examined sequences from these African isolates and the reference strain of T. britovi from Europe, indicating common ancestry, an historically continuous geographic distribution, and recent isolation for African and European populations. The detection of T. britovi in West Africa modifies our knowledge about the distribution of encapsulated species of Trichinella in Africa. Thus, Trichinella nelsoni is now considered to have a distribution limited to the Eastern part of the Afrotropical region from Kenya to South Africa. This provides a plausible explanation for the presence of Trichinella T8 in Namibia and South Africa, and further suggests that T. britovi could be the Trichinella species circulating among wild animals of Northern Africa.  相似文献

Aim In recent decades there has been a marked decline in the numbers of African lions (Panthera leo), especially in West Africa where the species is regionally endangered. Based on the climatological history of western Africa, we hypothesize that West and Central African lions have a unique evolutionary history, which is reflected by their genetic makeup. Location Sub‐Saharan Africa and India, with special focus on West and Central Africa. Method In this study 126 samples, throughout the lion’s complete geographic range, were subjected to phylogenetic analyses. DNA sequences of a mitochondrial region, containing cytochrome b, tRNAPro, tRNAThr and the left part of the control region, were analysed. Results Bayesian, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses consistently showed a distinction between lions from West and Central Africa and lions from southern and East Africa. West and Central African lions are more closely related to Asiatic lions than to the southern and East African lions. This can be explained by a Pleistocene extinction and subsequent recolonization of West Africa from refugia in the Middle East. This is further supported by the fact that the West and Central African clade shows relatively little genetic diversity and is therefore thought to be an evolutionarily young clade. Main conclusions The taxonomic division between an African and an Asian subspecies does not fully reflect the overall genetic diversity within lions. In order to conserve genetic diversity within the species, genetically distinct lineages should be prioritized. Understanding the geographic pattern of genetic diversity is key to developing conservation strategies, both for in situ management and for breeding of captive stocks.  相似文献

Genetic variation has been assessed in 30 populations (931 families) ofFaidherbia albida (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae) from across its entire African range, using six isozyme loci identified by five enzyme systems. Among the populations studied a null allele was proposed to explain the absence ofLap-1 activity in populations from southern and eastern Africa. The mean percentage of polymorphic loci per population, the mean number of alleles per locus and the mean genetic diversity within populations were 31.7%, 1.6 and 0.127 respectively. Genetic diversity was greatest in populations from West Africa and lowest in populations from eastern/southern Africa, with Ethiopian/Sudanese populations intermediate. The overall degree of genetic differentiation between populations (GST) indicated that approximately 56% of the enzyme variation resided within populations. Clustering of Nei's unbaised genetic distances calculated between all populations produced a dendrogram that generally followed the geographic distribution of the populations. Two major groups were identified that may be considered the eastern/southern African and the Ethiopian/West African clusters. Within the Ethiopian/West African cluster two subclusters could be recognised, one broadly corresponding to those populations from Ethiopia/Sudan and the other to those populations from West Africa. The implications of these results for theories regarding the origin ofF. albida in Africa are discussed.  相似文献

Previous studies based on allozyme variation have found little evidence for genetic differentiation in Drosophila simulans. On the basis of DNA sequence variation at two nuclear loci in four African populations of D. simulans, we show that there is significant structure to D. simulans populations within Africa. Variation at one of the loci, vermilion, appears to be neutral and supports an eastern African origin for European and American populations. Samples from the West Indies, Europe, and North America had a nucleotide diversity lower than that of African populations at vermilion and show nonequilibrium haplotype distributions at both vermilion and G6pd, consistent with a hypothesis of recent bottleneck and possibly also admixture in the history of these populations. Directional selection, previously documented at G6pd, appears to have occurred within the coalescence time of the species, obscuring deep population history.  相似文献

It has been proposed that human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) originated from simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) that are natural infections of sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus atys). To test this hypothesis, SIVs from eight sooty mangabeys, including six new viruses from West Africa, were genetically characterized. gag and env sequences showed that while the viruses of all eight sooty mangabeys belonged to the SIVsm/HIV-2 family, each was widely divergent from SIVs found earlier in captive monkeys at American primate centers. In two SIVs from sooty mangabeys discovered about 100 miles (ca. 161 Km) from each other in rural West Africa, the amino acids of a conserved gag p17-p26 region differed by 19.3%, a divergence greater than that in four of five clades of HIV-2 and in SIVs found in other African monkey species. Analysis of gag region sequences showed that feral mangabeys in one small troop harbored four distinct SIVs. Three of the newly found viruses were genetically divergent, showing as much genetic distance from each other as from the entire SIVsm/HIV-2 family. Sequencing and heteroduplex analysis of one feral animal-derived SIV showed a mosaic genome containing an env gene that was homologous with other feral SIVsm env genes in the troop but having a gag gene from another, distinct SIV. Surprisingly a gag phylogenetic tree based on nucleotide sequences showed that the African relatives closest to all three household-derived SIVs were HIV-2 subtypes D and E from humans in the same West African areas. In one case, the SIV/HIV-2 cluster was from the same village. The findings support the hypothesis that each HIV-2 subtype in West Africans originated from widely divergent SIVsm strains, transmitted by independent cross-species events in the same geographic locations.  相似文献

The circumtropical gobiid fish genus Bathygobius Bleeker, 1878 is discussed and defined in terms of external features, including the head lateral-line system, and osteology. Three West African species are recognized and redescribed: the amphiatlantic B. soporalor (Valenciennes, 1837) and two endemics, B. burtoni (O'Shaughnessy, 1875) and B. casamancus (Rochebrune, 1880). West African B. soporator differs significantly from western Atlantic material only in average values for predorsal scales and some body proportions, so that separation of eastern and western Atlantic populations as morphological species is not warranted. The affinities of the West African Bathygobius species are examined by means of phenetic (presence-only group-average clustering) and cladistic (Camin-Sokal, Dollo and Wagner) numerical processing of a binary database comprising 46 character states in 15 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) formed by species of Bathygobius. Results do not indicate close common ancestry between the West African endemic species and B. soporator , which has probably colonized West Africa from the New World. The implications of various cladistic schemes for the relationships of certain other American species are also noted.  相似文献

The African butterfly Danaus chrysippus , like other members of the family Danaidae, feeds as a larva on species of milkweeds (Asclepiadaceae). It has been demonstrated in a sample from a West African population that only a minority of adult D. chrysippus accumulated detectable amounts of poisonous and presumably emetic cardenolides from their larval foodplants. It has also been shown in D. chrysippus and the related monarch butterfly ( D. plexippus ) that the cardenolide content of adults varies with that of their respective milkweed foodplants.
Three population samples of D. chrysippus from sites in East Africa are analysed for cardenolides using the spectrophotometric technique refined by Brower, Edmunds & Moffitt (1975), which allows the assay of individual butterflies. The East African samples all have a palatability spectrum with a considerably higher percentage of cardenolide-containing individuals than the West African one.
This is discussed in terms of its effect on potential bird predators and the 'automimicry' of emetic by palatable individuals. In East Africa D. chrysippus is polymorphic and appears to act as a model in a complex mimicry ring, whereas in West Africa it is monomorphic and may have 'shed' most of its mimics. This latter hypothesis is discussed in the light of our results.  相似文献
