Early ontogenetic shells of Limopsis angusta, L. aurita, L. cristata, L. friedbergi and L. minuta are described in detail and their morphogenetic traits discussed in a phylogenetic context. Prodissoconch length is found to range from 170-370 µm discounting the so-called prodissoconch 2 stage of authors. Reports of such a stage refer to the early postlarval 'interdissoconch'. Prodissoconch sizes are indicative of lecithotrophy but not of brooding. Limopsid-like prodissoconchs are rather common among pteriomorphs and at present of little use for phylogenetic interpretations, therefore. The early postlarval hinge is characterized by two tooth generations: an early one, (G1), representing the postlarval continuation of provincular teeth, and a late one, (G2), representing the independent adult dentition. This is a plesiomorphic trait for Pteriomorphia. The postlarval ligament is continuous with the larval resilium; it is neither co-functional with nor is it substituted by the typical duplivincular ligament as in other arcoids. Occasionally developed ridges, gutters or multiplication of ligament sublayers remain restricted to the primordial resilifer. It is concluded that the limopsid adult ligament represents a fusion of adult sublayer repetition within a retained larval resilium, a phenomenon best described as a heterochronic process. Comparisons with homologous characters of other arcoids support the view that Limopsidae evolved from parallelodontid arcoids and that they gave rise to Philobryidae but not to Glycymerididae.  相似文献

Four new species and a new genus of lucinid bivalves are described from shallow and deeper waters in the Indian and West Pacific Oceans. The new genus Scabrilucina (subfamily Lucininae) includes the little-known Scabrilucina victorialis (Melvill, 1899) from the Arabian Sea and Scabrilucina vitrea (Deshayes, 1844) from the Andaman Sea as well as a new species Scabrilucina melvilli from the Torres Strait off northeastern Australia. Ferrocina brunei new species (Lucininae) was recovered from 60 m near oil drilling activities off Borneo; its anatomy confirmed the presence of symbiotic bacteria. Two unusual deeper water species of Leucosphaerinae are described, both species included in on-going molecular analyses; Gonimyrtea ferruginea from 400–650 m in the southwest Pacific and Myrtina reflexa from 200–825 m off Zanzibar and Madagascar.  相似文献

In the Croatian Adriatic, Arca noae occurs from the low intertidal to a depth of 60 m; it can live for > 15 years and is either solitary or forms byssally attached clumps with Modiolus barbatus. The shell is anteriorly foreshortened and posteriorly elongate. The major inhalant flow is from the posterior although a remnant anterior stream is retained. There are no anterior but huge posterior byssal retractor muscles and both anterior and posterior pedal retractors. The ctenidia are of Type B(1a) and the ctenidial–labial palp junction is Category 3. The ctenidia collect, filter and undertake the primary sorting of potential food in the inhalant water. The labial palps are small with simple re‐sorting tracks on the ridges of their inner surfaces. The ciliary currents of the mantle cavity appear largely concerned with the rejection of particulate material. The mantle margin comprises an outer and an (either) inner or middle fold. The outer fold is divided into outer and inner components that secrete the shell and are photo‐sensory, respectively. The latter bears a large number of pallial eyes, especially posteriorly. The inner/middle mantle fold of A. noae, possibly representative of simpler, more primitive conditions, may have differentiated into distinct folds in other recent representatives of the Bivalvia.  相似文献

Localization and morphology of NO-ergic elements in the digestive system of bivalve molluscs Mactra chinensis and Spisula sachalinensis were studied using histochemical technique [1] for detection of NADPH-diaphorase (EC 1.6.99.1) [1]. The NO-producing elements were revealed in all parts of the digestive system of the studied animals. NADPH-diaphorase was found in cells of several morphological types as well as in nerve plexuses. The most abundant in the digestive tract parts of the studied molluscs were intraepithelial nerve cells of the “open” type, whose thin apical process is directed towards the gut lumen. Subepithelial NO-ergic neurons were revealed in stomach and crystalline style sac of Mactra chinensis. Besides, diformazan granules are present in brush-border epitheliocytes of the major and secondary ducts of the digestive gland as well as in cells of digestive tubules of this gland. All studied parts were found to contain basiepithelial and subepithelial NO-ergic nerve fibers forming networks of various densities from, most commonly, loose to dense plexuses particularly developed in labia, esophagus, and gut of the studied molluscs.  相似文献

The feeding behavior and functional morphology associated with feeding in Ephemerella needhamiMcDunnough larvae were studied using videomacroscopic techniques, gut content analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Two stereotypic feeding cycles were employed by the larvae. In the maxillary brushing cycle, the maxillae are the primary food-gathering organs, with the main food being detritus deposited on the filamentous alga Cladophora.In the mandibular biting cycle, the mandibles are the primary food-gathering organs used to bite Cladophora filaments.Epiphytic diatoms on Cladophorawere another important part of the diet. Behavioral similarities are apparent in the choreography and synchronization of mouthpart movements among mayflies from several families. Functional morphological comparisons are drawn with hypognathous E. needhami, Cloeon dipterum, Baetis rhodani,and Siphlonurus aestivalis, aswell as the prognathous Heptageniidae. Differences in mouthpart usage and structure are related to the relative development of setal fields and combs and the feeding microhabitat.  相似文献

The paper describes morphometric and allozymic differences among four European species of the family Viviparidae: Viviparus contectus (Millet, 1813), V. viviparus (Linnaeus, 1758), V. acerosus Bourguignat, 1862, and V. ater (Cristofori et Jan, 1832). Fourteen continuous biometrical characters were measured. Incremental discriminant-function analysis, principal-component analysis, and non-metric multidimensional scaling were applied to analysis of the morphometric differences. All the techniques confirmed a similar picture: a slight morphometric differentiation, with the variability ranges of the species overlapping. On the other hand, the allozymic differentiation, studied at 12 loci, eight of them intra and/or interspecific polymorphic, is much better marked, the intraspecific Nei's distances among the four V. contectus populations ranging from 0.0014 to 0.0397, mean 0.0166, and interspecific distances ranging from 0.2306 (V. ater–V. acerosus) to 0.9888 (V. contectus 2 and V. viviparus), mean 0.6871. The allele frequencies and genetic distances (Nei's distance and Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards’chord distance) were used to compute maximum likelihood, additive Fitch–Margoliash and ultrametric Fitch–Margoliash trees. All the trees presented a similar pattern, but the maximum-likelihood and additive trees, based on Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards’distance, seem to reflect the phylogeny best. The results are compared with the most parsimonious phylogenies inferred for radular, soft-part morphology and anatomy, and opercular data from other papers by us, and the inferred phylogenies are also compared. Although the inferred molecular and morphological phylogenies are little different in topology, the amount of evolution along the corresponding branches (measured as the number of changes averaged over all reconstructions) is very different, the value of correlation coefficient between the two phylogenies being statistically insignificant. The occurrence of interspecific hybrids is discussed, and the isolation-by-competition mechanism is postulated. The probable origin of V. viviparus from a founder population extremely restricted in number is stressed. The possible history of the group is briefly discussed. The species is suggested to have originated in an unusual habitat of melt water at a glacier foreland that could have promoted genotypic differentiation and sympatric speciation.  相似文献

The phylogeographical and systematic relationships among species in the tropical marine fish genus Dascyllus were inferred using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data. Although our results were generally consistent with previously published phylogenies based on both morphological and mitochondrial data, our broad taxonomic and geographical sampling design revealed novel insights into the phylogenetic history of Dascyllus that had escaped previous notice. These results include: (a) the polyphyletic nature of D. reticulatus mtDNAs, representing two divergent and geographically separated lineages, one shared with D. flavicaudus and the second forming the sister lineage of D. carneus; (b) the paraphyly of D. trimaculatus relative to the closely related D. abisella; and (c) phylogeographical structure within the widespread taxa D. aruanus and D. trimaculatus. Application of a molecular clock permits us to posit a causative role for tectonic and oceanic changes regarding some Dascyllus speciation events. Finally, we mapped body size and the presence or absence of protogynous sex change on the mtDNA tree, and tested published hypotheses regarding determinants of the evolution of mating system and protogyny in the genus. Our data rejected a model based on body size but not one based on phylogenetic inertia. The ability to change sex arose once in the ancestor to the entire genus, and was lost once in the ancestor of the D. trimaculatus complex. For taxa that are as geographically widespread as many Indo-Pacific genera, this study highlights the importance of adequate geographical sampling when inferring patterns of species diversification and life history evolution.  相似文献

The feeding basket morphology and stomach content analyses of five Euphausia species (E. recurva, E. nana, E. pacifica, E. mutica and E. similis) were compared to elucidate their feeding ecology. The filter areas of feeding basket of E. pacifica and E. nana were proportionally larger than those of others in the size classes 13-20 mm and <13 mm, respectively, suggesting a high filtering efficiency in these species at each size class. Based on the secondary setal distance, it is suggested that there are three types of feeding basket in five Euphausia species. One is the fine mesh (<5 μm) of E. pacifica and E. nana; a second is the medium (10-20 μm) of E. recurva and E. mutica; and the third is the coarse (20-30 μm) of E. similis. The ability to feed on particles <5 μm would give both species, E. pacifica and E. nana, a great advantage over other species when number of flagellates is high. Stomach content analyses indicated a more omnivorous feeding mode in E. mutica, E. recurva and E. similis and a more herbivorous in E. pacifica and E. nana. This is in agreement with morphological studies of feeding baskets. Increments in the primary and secondary setal distances with increasing size of four Euphausia species, except E. pacifica, were evident, reflecting interspecific differences in food particle sizes utilized. In E. pacifica, however, the morphological similarity should produce intraspecific competition in diet.
