Nesting ecology and population studies indicate that diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) exhibit nest site fidelity and high habitat fidelity. However, genetic studies indicate high levels of gene flow. Because dispersal affects the genetics and population dynamics of a species, we used six highly polymorphic microsatellite markers to investigate sex-biased dispersal and natal philopatry of M. terrapin in Barnegat Bay, NJ. We compared results of spatial autocorrelation analysis, assignment methods and Wright's F(ST) estimators to a mark-recapture analysis. Mark-recapture analysis over a 4-year period indicated that most individuals have relatively small home ranges (<2 km), with mature females displaying greater home ranges than males. Goodness of fit analysis of our mark-recapture study indicated that some juvenile males were likely transient individuals moving through our study location. Mean assignment indices and first-generation migrant tests indicated that mature males were more prone to disperse than mature females, but first-generation migrant tests indicated that per capita there are more female than male dispersers. Thus, the relative importance of males and females on gene flow in terrapin populations may change in relation to population sex ratios. Spatial autocorrelation analysis indicated that mature females exhibited natal philopatry to nesting beaches, but first-generation migrant tests indicated that a small number of females failed to nest on natal beaches. Finally, we discuss the important conservation implications of male-biased dispersal and natal philopatry in the diamondback terrapin. 相似文献

Chronic by-catch of diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) in blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) pots is a concern for terrapin conservation along the United States Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Despite the availability of by-catch reduction devices (BRDs) for crab pots, adoption of BRDs has not been mandated and by-catch of terrapins continues. We conducted experimental fishing studies in North Carolina's year-round blue crab fishery from 2000 to 2004 to evaluate the ability of various BRDs to reduce terrapin by-catch without a concomitant reduction in the catch of blue crabs. In 4,822 crab pot days fished, we recorded only 21 terrapin captures. Estimated capture rates were 0.003 terrapins/pot per day in hard crab experimental fishing and 0.008 terrapins/pot per day in peeler experimental fishing. All terrapin captures occurred from April to mid-May within 321.4 m of the shoreline. Longer soak times produced more dead terrapins, with 4 live and 4 dead during hard crab experimental fishing and 11 live and 2 dead during peeler experimental fishing. The 4.0-cm BRDs in fall and 4.5-cm and 5.0-cm BRDs in spring reduced the catch of legal-sized male hard crabs by 26.6%, 21.2%, and 5.7%, respectively. Only the 5.0-cm BRDs did not significantly affect the catch of legal-sized hard male crabs. However, BRDs had no measurable effect on catch of target crabs in the peeler crab fishery. Our results identify 3 complementary and economically feasible tools for blue crab fishery managers to exclude terrapins from commercially fished crab pots in North Carolina: 1) gear modifications (e.g., BRDs); 2) distance-to-shore restrictions; and 3) time-of-year regulations. These measures combined could provide a reduction in terrapin by-catch of up to 95% without a significant reduction in target crab catch. © 2011 The Wildlife Society. 相似文献

The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is a charismatic and long-lived species of the United States eastern coast, and the only North American turtle that exclusively inhabits coastal brackish waters. Many terrapin populations are declining, and these declines have been largely linked to human activities; however, few studies have documented human and natural factors affecting terrapin population demography. Jamaica Bay, an urban estuary located in southern New York City, USA, is home to 2 nesting aggregations of terrapins, located at Ruler's Bar Hassock (RBH) and John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). We analyzed mark-recapture data for RBH from 2003–2018 and JFK from 2011–2018 to estimate annual survivorship of female diamondback terrapins and test the effects of 3 factors (a hurricane, water quality represented by nitrogen concentration, and injuries) on survival. The initial estimated annual survival was high (0.93) at RBH but declined to 0.89, while survival remained constant at JFK (0.92). Models examining the effect of Hurricane Sandy (2012) indicated a significant decline in survival in the 2 years following the hurricane in the RBH nesting aggregation but no change at JFK. Water quality did not influence trends in either aggregation, but the presence of major injuries (caused by boat collisions, predators, and the hurricane) significantly reduced annual survival at RBH. We propose increasing terrapin survivorship through mitigation of boat traffic, reducing populations of northern raccoons (Procyon lotor) to reduce injury to female terrapins and decrease egg and hatchling mortality, and increased law enforcement to reduce on-going poaching and capture as illegal by-catch. 相似文献

We describe polymerase chain recation (PCR) primers and conditions to amplify one dinucleotide and five tetranucleotide microsatellite DNA loci isolated from the Diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin). The PCR primers were tested on 21 terrapins from Cape Romain, SC, USA. The microsatellite primers developed yielded a high number of alleles (8–14) and high observed heterozygosities (0.57–1.0). 相似文献

Measuring the thermal conditions of aquatic reptiles with temperature dataloggers is a cost-effective way to study their behavior and habitat use. Temperature dataloggers are a particularly useful and informative approach to studying organisms such as the estuarine diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) that inhabits a dynamic environment often inaccessible to researchers. We used carapace-mounted dataloggers to measure hourly carapace temperature (Tc) of free-ranging terrapins in South Carolina from October 2007 to 2008 to examine the effects of month, sex, creek site, and tide on Tc and to determine the effects of month, sex, and time of day on terrapin basking frequency. Simultaneous measurements of environmental temperatures (Te; shallow mud, deep mud, water) allowed us to make inferences about terrapin microhabitat use. Terrapin Tc differed significantly among months and creek and between sexes. Terrapin microhabitat use also varied monthly, with shallow mud temperature being the best predictor of Tc November–March and water temperature being the best predictor of Tc April–October. Terrapins basked most frequently in spring and fall and males basked more frequently than females. Our study contributes to a fuller understanding of terrapin thermal biology and provides support for using dataloggers to investigate behavior and habitat use of aquatic ectotherms inhabiting dynamic environments. 相似文献

Humans have greatly altered the natural distribution of species, making it difficult to distinguish between natural and introduced populations. This is a problem for conservation efforts because native or introduced status can determine whether a species is afforded protection or persecuted as an invasive pest. Holocene colonization events are especially difficult to discern, particularly when the species in question is a naturally good disperser and widely transported by people. In this study, we test the origin of such a species, the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), on Bermuda using a combination of palaeontologic (fossil, radiometric and palaeoenvironmental) and genetic data. These lines of evidence support the hypothesis that terrapins are relatively recent (between 3000 and 400 years ago) natural colonizers of Bermuda. The tiny population of Bermudian terrapins represents the second naturally occurring non-marine reptile that still survives on one of the most densely populated and heavily developed oceanic islands in the world. We recommend that they should be given protection as a native species. 相似文献

A ciliate infection ascribed to the genus Paranophrys was found in early adult Dungeness crabs, Cancer magister, held in laboratory bioassay facilities, and in outdoor flow-through tanks in Newport, Oregon. Infections proved lethal as ciliates multiplied to high densities in the blood and tissues causing degeneration and necrosis of musculature. All infected crabs had recent wounds through the exoskeleton which probably provided a portal of entry, and the elapsed time between infliction of a wound and gross symptoms of stress was estimated at 9 days although animals died as late as 26 days. The nature of Paranophrys infections in C. magister, i.e., as an opportunistic pathogen of cultured animals and/or a disease in wild populations of this crab is discussed. 相似文献

Squamate reptiles rely heavily on visual and chemical cues to detect their prey, so we expected yellow‐spotted goannas (Varanus panoptes) which are predators of sea turtle nests on mainland beaches in northern Australia would use these cues to find sea turtle nests. Ghost crabs (Ocypode ceratophthalmus and Ocypode cordimanus) are also common on Australian sea turtle nesting beaches and frequently burrow into sea turtle nests. However, the potential for ghost crab burrowing activity at sea turtle nests to signal the location of a nest to goannas has not been investigated. Here, we used camera traps and presence of tracks at nests to record goanna activity around selected nests during the incubation period and 10 days after hatchling turtles emerged from their nests. We also recorded the number of ghost crab burrows around nests to evaluate ghost crab activity. Our results indicated that nest discovery by goannas was independent of nest age, but that the nest visitation rate of goannas and crabs increased significantly after a nest had been opened by a goanna or after hatchlings had emerged from the nest. There was no apparent connection between ghost crab burrows into a nest and the likelihood of that nest being predated by goannas. 相似文献

Glucosinolates are biologically active natural products characteristic of crucifers, including oilseed rape, cabbage vegetables and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Crucifer‐specialist insect herbivores, like the economically important pest Plutella xylostella (diamondback moth), frequently use glucosinolates as oviposition stimuli. This suggests that the transfer of a glucosinolate biosynthetic pathway to a non‐crucifer would stimulate oviposition on an otherwise non‐attractive plant. Here, we demonstrate that stable genetic transfer of the six‐step benzylglucosinolate pathway from A. thaliana to Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) results in the production of benzylglucosinolate without causing morphological alterations. Benzylglucosinolate‐producing tobacco plants were more attractive for oviposition by female P. xylostella moths than wild‐type tobacco plants. As newly hatched P. xylostella larvae were unable to survive on tobacco, these results represent a proof‐of‐concept strategy for rendering non‐host plants attractive for oviposition by specialist herbivores with the long‐term goal of generating efficient dead‐end trap crops for agriculturally important pests. 相似文献

Abstract Baited and unbaited hoop-nets commonly are used to capture catfish in lotic and lentic systems. Turtle bycatch and post-capture mortality has been problematic during catfish surveys in Missouri, USA, most recently in the Gasconade River, Gasconade and Osage counties. We evaluated 3 modified hoop-net designs that would reduce turtle bycatch without reducing catfish capture in the Gasconade River during 15 May-15 July 2006 after pilot study evaluation of 5 hoop-net designs in April 2006. We deployed modified and control-nets in blocks for 48 hours to evaluate differences in turtle and catfish catch rate, as well as abundance, size, and mortality rate of turtle bycatch. The chimney design reduced turtle bycatch by 84% when compared to the control, without decreasing the number or average size of captured flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris). Environmental conditions that affected turtle mortality included Secchi disc transparency, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and stream river depth. This is the first known attempt to create turtle exclusion or escapement devices for hoop-nets deployed in freshwater systems. Biologists using hoop-nets to sample aquatic vertebrates in moderate to large river systems will benefit from our study. The application of this methodology will reduce turtle bycatch mortality, especially when sampling is conducted in high water temperatures. 相似文献

In the Hymenoptera, single locus complementary sex determination (sl-CSD) describes a system where males develop either from unfertilized haploid eggs or from fertilized diploid eggs that are homozygous at a single polymorphic sex locus. Diploid males are often inviable or sterile, and are produced more frequently under inbreeding. Within families where sl-CSD has been demonstrated, we predict that sl-CSD should be more likely in species with solitary development than in species where siblings develop gregariously (and likely inbreed). We examine this prediction in the parasitoid wasp genus Cotesia, which contains both solitary and gregarious species. Previous studies have shown that sl-CSD is absent in two gregarious species of Cotesia, but present in one gregarious species. Here, we demonstrate CSD in the solitary Cotesia vestalis, using microsatellite markers. Diploid sons are produced by inbred, but not outbred, females. However, frequencies of diploid males were lower than expected under sl-CSD, suggesting that CSD in C. vestalis involves more than one locus. 相似文献

An outbreak of the nemertean, Carcinonemertes epialti, was observed on Hemigrapsus oregonensis during October, 1982 at Campbell Cove, Bodega Harbor, California. Mean worm intensity (296 worms/crab) was the highest recorded for this nemertean egg predator on H. oregonensis. During the outbreak, male crabs were found to harbor more worms than both non-ovigerous and ovigerous females. Crab egg mortality was substantial; 83% of the ovigerous females experienced 75–100% brood mortality. The seasonal peak in worm abundance coincided with the seasonal low in crab reproduction at this locality. A method for estimating the impact of C. epialti on H. oregonensis natality was developed using crab size and fecundity, and worm prevalence and intensity. For a non-outbreak sampling period, a mean of 5.6% egg mortality was experienced by infested crabs for the period selected. Thus, brood mortality during the outbreak was much greater than that experienced at non-outbreak periods. Heavy fishing pressure on some commercially important crab species has been suggested as a possible factor inducing worm outbreaks and facilitating their continued persistence. These observations suggest that fisheries are not necessarily responsible for the outbreaks of nemerteans on commercially important crab species. However, fishing pressure may still be a sufficient condition to promote nemertean outbreaks. 相似文献

Enhancing species resilience to changing environmental conditions is often suggested as a climate change adaptation strategy. To effectively achieve this, it is necessary first to understand the factors that determine species resilience, and their relative importance in shaping the ability of species to adjust to the complexities of environmental change. This is an extremely challenging task because it requires comprehensive information on species traits. We explored the resilience of 58 marine turtle regional management units (RMUs) to climate change, encompassing all seven species of marine turtles worldwide. We used expert opinion from the IUCN‐SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group (n = 33 respondents) to develop a Resilience Index, which considered qualitative characteristics of each RMU (relative population size, rookery vulnerability, and genetic diversity) and non climate‐related threats (fisheries, take, coastal development, and pollution/pathogens). Our expert panel perceived rookery vulnerability (the likelihood of functional rookeries becoming extirpated) and non climate‐related threats as having the greatest influence on resilience of RMUs to climate change. We identified the world's 13 least resilient marine turtle RMUs to climate change, which are distributed within all three major ocean basins and include six of the world's seven species of marine turtle. Our study provides the first look at inter‐ and intra‐species variation in resilience to climate change and highlights the need to devise metrics that measure resilience directly. We suggest that this approach can be widely used to help prioritize future actions that increase species resilience to climate change. 相似文献

Anthropogenic disturbances are increasing worldwide, causing wildlife habitat loss, alteration, and fragmentation. In Canada, the decommissioning of linear anthropogenic structures is identified as a promising tool to restore the habitat of threatened populations of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) by reducing food availability for alternate prey and decreasing encounter probabilities with predators. In this study, we monitored the use of 40 km of decommissioned forest roads by caribou, gray wolves (Canis lupus), black bears (Ursus americanus), and moose (Alces americanus) 1–3 years after reclamation, using 232 motion-activated camera traps. We compared four additive treatments (meaning that each successive treatment included the treatment prior): closing the road to human access, decompacting its soil, planting black spruce (Picea mariana) trees, and adding enriched soil. We assessed the influence of treatments, use by other large mammals, and characteristics of the surrounding environment on road use by the four species. Caribou used the planted treatment (which also included closing and decompacting) more than the closed-only (reference) treatment, but treatments did not influence the use of decommissioned roads by bears and moose. We could not assess the use of treated roads by wolves because of low sample size. Road use by caribou declined with local moose density, but increased with local bear density. Caribou were observed more frequently on roads surrounded by regenerating and mature coniferous stands; caribou also preferentially used roads surrounded by wetlands. Our results suggest that the treatment combining road closure, soil decompaction, and tree planting could be beneficial to caribou, highlighting the relevance of including active restoration efforts in caribou conservation programs. We recommend that such a treatment be added to road decommissioning protocols for the conservation of caribou, alongside broad-scale habitat protection.

We describe a new genus and species of blood-dwelling apostome ciliate, Lynnia grapsolytica n. gen., n. sp. (Apostomatida: Colliniidae). A distinct kinety “hook” pattern on the tomite’s posterior ventral face, coupled with its marine habitat and use of a decapod host, readily distinguishes this ciliate from all known colliniids. We detected the parasite in ~12% of Pachygrapsus crassipes (Brachyura: Grapsidae) crabs in a California estuary and confirmed its presence at a Baja California rocky intertidal site. As existing methods failed to adequately stain this ciliate, we developed a new miniaturized silver carbonate impregnation staining method that produced excellent somatic and nuclear stains in all five observed cell types. A possibly unique trait is the active invagination of the tropho-tomont’s anterior to form a temporary “pseudocytopharynx,” likely used for feeding. Histological examination revealed that the ciliate invaded and damaged skeletal muscle, the heart, connective tissues, and gonads. Survivorship analysis indicated that infected crabs experienced 2.6 times greater daily mortality than uninfected crabs. Laboratory and field experimental infection attempts failed, suggesting a complex life cycle with outside-host development. Phylogenetic analysis at the 18S and COI loci confirmed the ciliate's placement in the Colliniidae. We emend the diagnosis of Family Colliniidae. 相似文献

Young juveniles of many motile benthic species are concentrated in structurally complex habitats, but the proximate causes of this distribution are usually not clear. In the present study, I assessed three potentially important processes affecting distribution and abundance of early benthic stages in the shore crab (Carcinus maenas): (1) selection of habitat by megalopae (postlarvae); (2) habitat-specific predation; and (3) post-settlement movements by juveniles. These processes were assessed concurrently over 3-9 days at two spatial scales: at the scale of square meters using cage techniques within nursery areas, and at the scale of hectares using isolated populations of juvenile shore crabs in small nursery areas as mesocosms. The results were compared to habitat-specific distribution in the field.Shore crab megalopae and first instar juveniles (settlers) were distributed non-randomly among micro-habitats in the assessed nursery areas, with great densities in both mussel beds, eelgrass and filamentous algal patches (on average 114-232 settlers m−2), and significantly smaller densities on open sand habitats at all times (on average 4 settlers m−2). The same habitat-specific settlement pattern was found in cages where predators were excluded, suggesting that active habitat selection at settlement was responsible for the initial distribution. Older juveniles (second to ninth instar crabs) were also sparse on sand, but in contrast to settlers, were concentrated in mussel beds, which showed significantly greater densities than eelgrass and algal habitats. The cage experiment demonstrated a dynamic distribution of juvenile crabs. Young juveniles constantly migrated over open sand habitats (20 m or further) and colonized the experimental plots in a habitat-specific pattern that reflected the distribution in the field. This pattern was also found for very small crabs colonizing predator-exclusion cages, suggesting that selection of habitat by migrating juveniles caused the ontogenetic change in habitat use. Although post-settlement movements were great within nursery areas, juvenile dispersal at a regional scale appeared to be small, and the recruitment of juvenile shore crabs to the shallow bays occurred mainly through pelagic megalopae.Conservative estimates at the scale of whole nursery areas, based on migration trap data and field samples, indicated great mortality of settlers and early benthic stages of shore crabs. Results from the cage experiment suggest that predation by crabs and shrimp were responsible for the high settlement mortality. Both enclosed cannibalistic juvenile crabs and local predators on uncaged habitat plots caused significant losses of settlers in all habitats (on average 22% and 64% 3 day−1, respectively). The effect of predators was highly variable between trials, but differed little between habitat types, and predation had no detectable proximate effect on juvenile distribution, despite the great losses. Small settlement densities on sand habitats in combination with a refuge at low prey numbers, and an aggregation of cannibalistic juvenile crabs in nursery habitats appear to decrease the effect of habitat-specific predation rates on the distribution of juvenile shore crabs. This study demonstrates that active habitat selection at settlement followed by a dynamic redistribution of young juveniles can be the proximate processes responsible for habitat-specific distribution of epibenthic juveniles, and indicate that predation represents a major evolutionary process reinforcing this behavior. 相似文献
