A new fossil flower and inflorescence-bearing locality has been discovered in the Oligocene of the Texas Gulf Coast. The new flora is similar to the Middle Eocene Claiborne Flora of the southeastern USA, but the quality of preservation is sometimes better in the Oligocene fossils. One component of the new flora, a mimosoid legume inflorescence, appears identical with Eomimosoidea plumosa, first reported from the Claiborne Formation of western Tennessee. Investigations of these younger specimens indicate that the taxon had changed little during the Middle Eocene-Oligocene interval, and the better quality of preservation of the Texas specimens has provided further insights into the structure of the fossils. Comparisons of the fine structural details of the pollen of Eomimosoidea with similar pollen of extant mimosoids has confirmed that the fossil genus is indeed extinct and suggests that tetrahedral tetrads of columellate, tricolporate pollen grains are ancient, possibly primitive, in the Mimosoideae.  相似文献

Abstract: Two species of decapod crustacean are recorded from the Agua de la Mula Member of the Agrio Formation (Upper Hauterivian – Lower Barremian) of the Neuquén Basin of west‐central Argentina, namely Astacodes falcifer Bell and a new species of Palaeohomarus, P. pacificus. The preservation of the specimens is exceptional, some showing delicate compound eyes and a stridulatory apparatus, features rarely found in fossil forms. Many specimens are preserved articulated inside calcareous nodules, within dark‐grey shales. The lobster‐bearing sediments accumulated in a low‐energy marine environment and diagenetic mineralization occurred very rapidly, prior to significant decay, thus allowing exceptional preservation of specimens. Palaeohomarus was a rare genus in the Cretaceous with a palaeogeographic distribution restricted to the Mediterranean Tethys, the eastern USA and Madagascar, while Astacodes falcifer has been recorded only from Speeton (eastern England) and Neuquén.  相似文献

Abstract. Dermaptera (earwigs) is a cosmopolitan order of insects, the phylogenetic relationships of which are poorly understood. The phylogeny of Dermaptera was inferred from large subunit ribosomal (28S), small subunit ribosomal (18S), histone-3 (H3) nuclear DNA sequences, and forty-three morphological characters. Sequence data were collected for thirty-two earwig exemplar taxa representing eight families in two suborders: Hemimeridae (suborder Hemimerina); Pygidicranidae, Anisolabididae, Labiduridae, Apachyidae, Spongiphoridae, Chelisochidae and Forficulidae (suborder Forficulina). Eighteen taxa from ten additional orders were also included, representing Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Orthoptera, Phasmida, Embiidina, Mantodea, Isoptera, Blattaria, Grylloblattodea and Zoraptera. These data were analysed via direct optimization in poy under a range of gap and substitution values to test the sensitivity of the data to variations in parameter values. These results indicate that the epizoic Hemimerus is not sister to the remaining Dermaptera, but rather nested as sister to Forficulidae + Chelisochidae. These analyses support the paraphyly of Pygidicranidae and Spongiphoridae and the monophyly of Chelisochidae, Forficulidae, Anisolabididae and Labiduridae.  相似文献

Specimens previously attributed to Sawdonia curstipa were re-examined. Some of the specimens are transferred to Serrulacaulis cf. S. furcatus based on axial morphology. Other specimens, including fertile axes with one or two rows of sporangia with curved stalks and sterile axes with cone-shaped spines covering the surface, are of uncertain assignment due to poor preservation. The nomenclature problem of Sawdonia custipa is also noted.  相似文献

Bees (Apidae), of which there are more than 19 900 species, are extremely important for ecosystem services and economic purposes, so taxon identity is a major concern. The goal of this study was to optimize the DNA barcode technique based on the Cytochrome c oxidase (COI) mitochondrial gene region. This approach has previously been shown to be useful in resolving taxonomic inconsistencies and for species identification when morphological data are poor. Specifically, we designed and tested new primers and standardized PCR conditions to amplify the barcode region for bees, focusing on the corbiculate Apids. In addition, primers were designed to amplify small COI amplicons and tested with pinned specimens. Short barcode sequences were easily obtained for some Bombus century‐old museum specimens and shown to be useful as mini‐barcodes. The new primers and PCR conditions established in this study proved to be successful for the amplification of the barcode region for all species tested, regardless of the conditions of tissue preservation. We saw no evidence of Wolbachia or numts amplification by these primers, and so we suggest that these new primers are of broad value for corbiculate bee identification through DNA barcode.  相似文献

The rate of gregariousness and intra- and inter-specific attractivity were evaluated under laboratory conditions in five species of Dermaptera. The three species of the genus Forficula (Forficula auricularia L., F. decipiens Gené and F. pubescens Gené) showed distinctly gregarious behaviour in old larvae and adults in the pre-reproductive phase. This gregariousness was seen at the intraspecific level and also among individuals of different species. The other two species, Labidura riparia Pallas and Euborellia moesta Gené, were randomly distributed over the available shelters, with no distinct tendency for aggregation or isolation. In individual tests, insects of all five species were attracted by shelters previously visited by conspecifics in preference to control shelters. For the two non-gregarious species, this phenomenon might function as a burrow marker. The same tests showed an interattractivity for four of the species studied. Only L. riparia did not respond to the trails of the four other species, although its trails were attractive to the other species. The pheromonal nature of the substances involved in the interspecific relationships and the involvement of behaviour in the biology and speciation of Dermaptera are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis A list is presented of all known specimens of the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae based on a survey of the literature and of museum, aquarium and university holdings. Details are given of the date, place, time and depth of capture, the name and age of the fisherman, the length, weight and sex of the fish, the first literature record, the method of preservation and the present location of specimens, if known. A new number is assigned to each specimen. At least 172 coelacanths are known to have been caught since 1938. The first coelacanth was caught off South Africa but all properly documented, subsequent specimens have been caught off the islands of Grand Comoro and Anjouan in the Comoros. An appeal is made to the Comoran authorities for each specimen that is caught to be made available for scientific study. Museum authorities are also encouraged to allow their specimens to be X-rayed or dissected so that vital information can be obtained on fecundity, foetal nutrition and dietary preferences. It is essential for the coelacanth conservation effort that this inventory is maintained by the Coelacanth Conservation Council.  相似文献

The first named Ediacaran body fossil, Aspidella Terranovica   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Aspidella terranovica Billings, 1872 was first described from the late Neoproterozoic Fermeuse Formation (St. John's Group) on the Avalon Peninsula of eastern Newfoundland, approximately 1km stratigraphically above the famous Ediacaran biota at Mistaken Point, and several kilometres below the base of the Cambrian. Aspidella has been reinterpreted perhaps more than any other Precambrian taxon, and has variously been regarded as a fossil mollusc or ‘medusoid’, a gas escape structure, a concretion, or a mechanical suction mark. Our studies indicate that Aspidella includes a wide variety of preservational morphs varying from negative hyporeliefs with a raised rim and ridges radiating from a slit (Aspidella‐type preservation), to flat discs with a central boss and sharp outer ring (Spriggia preservation), to positive hyporeliefs with concentric ornamentation (Ediacaria preservation). Specimens occur in a continuum of sizes, with preservational styles dependent on the size of the specimen and the grain size of the host lithology; the elongation of specimens is tectonic. Aspidella is confirmed as a body fossil from observations of complex radial and concentric ornamentation, mutually deformed borders in clusters of specimens, and occurrence on the same bedding planes as certain distinctive Ediacaran taxa. Aspidella is indistinguishable from, and has priority over, several of the most common genera of late Neoproterozoic discoidal body fossils worldwide. Similar fossils from Australia are interpreted as holdfasts of frond‐like organisms. The density of specimens in the Aspidella beds suggests levels of benthic biomass in the Neoproterozoic that could rival those of modern marine communities. The serial growth forms, PalaeopascichnusIntrites, Neonereites renariusYelovichnus, associated with Aspidella, are interpreted as body fossils of unknown affinities rather than trace fossils. A new, trilobed, Ediacaran body fossil, Triforillonia costellae gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Aspidella beds of the Fermeuse Formation.  相似文献

In recent years, the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) Xiagou Formation has yielded approximately 100 avian partial skeletons, many with soft‐tissue traces, from sites in the Changma Basin of Gansu Province, north‐western China. The most abundant taxon amongst these is the ornithuromorph Gansus yumenensis, but enantiornithines have also been identified in the sample. Here we describe two incomplete, semi‐articulated appendicular skeletons, the first consisting of a partial left pelvic girdle and complete pelvic limb, and the second comprised of a nearly complete right pelvic limb. Both specimens bear characteristics diagnostic of Enantiornithes, and are referred to a new taxon, Qiliania graffini gen. et sp. nov. The exceptional, three‐dimensional preservation of these specimens (compared to the crushed, nearly two‐dimensional condition of most other Early Cretaceous avian fossils) reveals new information regarding enantiornithine anatomy, evolution, and diversity. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 162 , 201–219.  相似文献

Long‐term datasets are needed to evaluate temporal patterns in wildlife disease burdens, but historical data on parasite abundance are extremely rare. For more than a century, natural history collections have been accumulating fluid‐preserved specimens, which should contain the parasites infecting the host at the time of its preservation. However, before this unique data source can be exploited, we must identify the artifacts that are introduced by the preservation process. Here, we experimentally address whether the preservation process alters the degree to which metazoan parasites are detectable in fluid‐preserved fish specimens when using visual parasite detection techniques. We randomly assigned fish of three species (Gadus chalcogrammus, Thaleichthys pacificus, and Parophrys vetulus) to two treatments. In the first treatment, fish were preserved according to the standard procedures used in ichthyological collections. Immediately after the fluid‐preservation process was complete, we performed parasitological dissection on those specimens. The second treatment was a control, in which fish were dissected without being subjected to the fluid‐preservation process. We compared parasite abundance between the two treatments. Across 298 fish individuals and 59 host–parasite pairs, we found few differences between treatments, with 24 of 27 host–parasite pairs equally abundant between the two treatments. Of these, one pair was significantly more abundant in the preservation treatment than in the control group, and two pairs were significantly less abundant in the preservation treatment than in the control group. Our data suggest that the fluid‐preservation process does not have a substantial effect on the detectability of metazoan parasites. This study addresses only the effects of the fixation and preservation process; long‐term experiments are needed to address whether parasite detectability remains unchanged in the months, years, and decades of storage following preservation. If so, ecologists will be able to reconstruct novel, long‐term datasets on parasite diversity and abundance over the past century or more using fluid‐preserved specimens from natural history collections.  相似文献

A new genus of Aeshnidae, Huncoaeshna n. gen., based on Huncoaeshna corrugata n. gen., n. sp., is erected from Laguna del Hunco (Ypresian) in Patagonia Argentina. The specimen presents a special kind of preservation with the middle part of the wing wrinkled. The presence of only two fossil specimens of Aeshnidae in South America is surely due to the lack of paleontomologists and collections of fossil insects in the subcontinent.  相似文献

Abstract: Ediacaran structures known as ‘pizza discs’ or Ivesheadia have long been considered enigmatic. They are amongst the oldest known members of the Ediacara biota, apparently restricted to the Avalonian successions of Newfoundland and the UK, c. 579–560 Ma. Here, we suggest that these impressions are taphomorphs, resulting from the post‐mortem decay of the frondose Ediacaran biota. Ediacaran fossils range from well‐preserved, high‐fidelity variants to almost completely effaced specimens. The effaced specimens are inferred to have undergone modification of their original morphology by post‐mortem microbial decay on the sea floor, combined with sediment trapping and binding. In this style of preservation, morphological details within the organism became variously subdued as a function of the extent of organic decay prior to casting by overlying sediments. Decay and effacement were progressive in nature, producing a continuum of grades of preservation on Ediacaran bedding planes. Fossils preserved by such ‘effaced preservation’ are those that have suffered these processes to the extent that only their gross form can be determined. We suggest that the lack of detailed morphology in effaced specimens renders such fossils unsuitable for use as type material, as it is possible that several taxa may, upon degradation and burial, generate similar morphological taphomorphs. We here reinterpret the genus Ivesheadia as a taphomorph resulting from extensive post‐mortem decay of frondose organisms. Blackbrookia, Pseudovendia and Shepshedia from beds of comparable age in England are likewise regarded as taphomorphs broadly related to Charnia or Charniodiscus spp. To reflect the suggestion that such impressions are likely to be taphomorphs, and not taxonomically discrete, we propose the term ivesheadiomorphs to incorporate all such effaced taphonomic expressions of Ediacaran macrofossil taxa in Avalonian assemblages. Our recognition of effaced preservation has significant implications for Ediacaran taxonomy, and consequently for measures of Ediacaran diversity and disparity. It is implied that Avalonian assemblages preserve both organisms that were alive and organisms that were already dead at the time of burial. As such, the fossil assemblages cannot be taken to represent census populations of living organisms, as in prior interpretations.  相似文献

Male dimorphisms are particularly conspicuous examples of the alternative reproductive strategies employed within some species. Such dimorphisms are thought to exist as genetic polymorphisms under ESS conditions, or to be conditional strategies where exogenous conditions determine the adult body plan. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is currently considered to be a fitness correlate of significant use in interpreting the functional significance of secondary sexual characteristics. In particular, negative slopes of FA on trait size are thought to arise in traits whose expression is dependent on condition. We measured forceps lengths and asymmetries in 2 island populations of the European earwig Forficula auricularia and Museum specimens of 5 other earwig (Dermaptera, Forficulidae) species from different genera, that appeared to be dimorphic. In a detailed study of Forficula auricularia we found a significant fit to a statistical model for the identification of dimorphisms and, for all species examined, morphs differed in the slope and/or elevation of the allometric relationship between body size and forcep length. Possible determinates of male dimorphisms are suggested from the data. Contrary to expectation, FA was not found to be greater in the minor morphs. Negative relationships between FA and forceps length were absent in both morphs of species examined from museum collections. Of the two island populations of Forficula auricularia, the smaller and more isolated population had higher FA and a negative relationship between FA and forceps length in the major morph. We discuss these patterns in the light of recent theories of FA and honest signalling.  相似文献

Mantophasmatodea and phylogeny of the lower neopterous insects   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Polyneoptera is a name sometimes applied to an assemblage of 11 insect orders comprising the lower neopterous or “orthopteroid” insects. These orders include familiar insects such as Orthoptera (grasshoppers), Blattodea (roaches), Isoptera (termites) (Mantodea) praying mantises, Dermaptera (earwigs), Phasmatodea (stick insects), Plecoptera (stoneflies), as well as the more obscure, Embiidina (web‐spinners), Zoraptera (angel insects) and Grylloblattodea (ice‐crawlers). Many of these insect orders exhibit a high degree of morphological specialization, a condition that has led to multiple phylogenetic hypotheses and little consensus among investigators. We present a phylogenetic analysis of the polyneopteran orders representing a broad range of their phylogenetic diversity and including the recently described Mantophasmatodea. These analyses are based on complete 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Histone 3 DNA sequences, and a previously published morphology matrix coded at the ordinal level. Extensive analyses utilizing different alignment methodologies and parameter values across a majority of possible ranges were employed to test for sensitivity of the results to ribosomal alignment and to explore patterns across the theoretical alignment landscape. Multiple methodologies support the paraphyly of Polyneoptera, the monophyly of Dictyoptera, Orthopteroidea (sensu Kukalova‐Peck; i.e. Orthoptera + Phasmatodea + Embiidina), and a group composed of Plecoptera + Dermaptera + Zoraptera. Sister taxon relationships between Embiidina + Phasmatodea in a group called “Eukinolabia”, and Dermaptera + Zoraptera (“Haplocercata”) are also supported by multiple analyses. This analysis also supports a sister taxon relationship between the newly described Mantophasmatodea, which are endemic to arid portions of southern Africa, and Grylloblattodea, a small order of cryophilic insects confined to the north‐western Americas and north‐eastern Asia, in a group termed “Xenonomia”. This placement, coupled with the morphological disparity of the two groups, validates the ordinal status of Mantophasmatodea. © The Willi Hennig Society 2005.  相似文献

The temperate sandstone caves of the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, support 85 cavernicolous invertebrate species across six phyla. Six of these, including two blind and depigmented species of insects (Dermaptera) and spiders (Araneae: Hahniidae) were previously unknown. Twenty-one species are endemic to the Peninsula. Thirteen of these are presumed troglobitic Gondwanan relicts, including highly specialized, phylogenetically unique, rare species with restricted distributions and specialized habitat requirements. According to the criteria listed in the IUCN Red List Categories (1994), the onychophoran Peripatopsis alba and crustacean Spelaeogriphus lepidops should be considered Critically Endangered, their extents of occurrence being less than 100km2. Furthermore, Data Deficient species, such as the freshwater shrimps Protojanira leleupi and Paramelita barnardi, the spider Hahnia sp.nov., the earwig Dermaptera sp.nov. and the centipede Cryptops stupendus, are likely to be additional Critically Endangered species on account of their exceptional rarity or restricted distributions. The remaining endemic cavernicoles are considered Endangered on account of their limited distributions (extent of occurrence <5000km2). Therefore, conservation considerations are clearly an urgent priority and appropriate recommendations are provided. Management-orientated research, long-term population monitoring and the conservation of pseudokarst areas, are urgent requirements for the conservation of these rare and threatened evolutionary relicts in their isolated island-like habitats.  相似文献

Male and female genitalia generally show a rapid evolutionary rate, which raises the problems related to homologization and the determination of the polarities of evolutionary changes. In earwigs (Dermaptera), multiple or branched female sperm-storage organs (spermathecae) have been reported for members of the Karschiellidae, Pygidicranidae, and Diplatyidae, collectively termed the “basal” Dermaptera. Whether the complicated spermathecae represent a plesiomorphy or an apomorphy has not been resolved. Here I report the occurrence of multiple or branched spermathecae in gamma-irradiated samples of two earwig species, Euborellia plebeja (Dohrn, 1863) (Anisolabididae) and Proreus simulans (Stål, 1860) (Chelisochidae), which belong to the “higher” Dermaptera (Apachyidae, Labiduridae, Anisolabididae, Spongiphoridae, Chelisochidae, and Forficulidae). Females belonging to the higher Dermaptera normally have a single-unbranched spermatheca. I discuss examples of possible atavisms in relation to the evolutionary pathways of spermathecal morphology. Possible atavisms in the number of male organs for sperm transfer (virgae) are also reported.  相似文献

Museum fish specimens are invaluable resources for genetic studies, but extraction of high quality DNA is often problematic. In this study, hairtail fishes of the genera Trichiurus and Lepturacanthus (family: Trichiuridae) representing a wide range of preservation histories and three different methods of preservation were analyzed for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) extraction, amplification and sequencing of marker genes. A total of six protocols, including a commercially available kit, were compared in this study. Amplification of conserved genes such as16S rRNA and 12S rRNA were done using polymerase chain reaction with sequence analyses using automated capillary sequencing techniques. The results show that mtDNA extraction, amplification and sequencing of conserved genes could be obtained successfully from frozen (?20°C) preserved specimens (1–5 years) and also from ethanol (95%) fixed specimens (2–5 years) but not from any of the formalin (10%) fixed specimens (3–4 years). However, specimens that have been fixed for only 7 days in buffered formalin (10% formalin with phosphate buffer containing 173 mm salt) and ethanol (95%) could yield successful mtDNA extraction, amplification and sequence information of both 16S rRNA and 12S rRNA.  相似文献
