Artemia individuals from a wild population, bearing cestode cysticercoids (Hymenolepididae) were kept in the laboratory during four months to observe influences of the parasite on the host biology. No differences were found between parasitized and unparasitized shrimps regarding final adult size. The higher survival of parasitized animals suggests that parasitism is not pathogenic. The most dramatic effect was host castration. Parasitized individuals showed higher total lipid levels, probably linked to carotenoid pigments conveying a red color to parasitized shrimps.  相似文献

Grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio Holthuis and P. vilgaris (Say), were collected at 11 localities along the coast of Georgia and surveyed for digenetic trematode metacercariae. The effect of trematode infection on grass shrimp fitness was also examined. Microphallus turgidas (Leigh) was the only trematode observed. The prevalence of metacercarial cysts of this parasite in P. pugio (75%) was higher than in P. vulgaris (24%), as were the mean intensity, abundance, and population density (no. cysts/cm host body length) of the parasite. Infected shrimp were found at every collection locality and parasite prevalence and density were greatest in P. pugio from higher salinity localities (> or = 20 parts per thousand [ppt]). There was no relation between host body size and parasite density in P. vulgaris, and parasite density increased with host body size in P. pugio, suggesting that the parasite does not affect host survival. There was no relation between parasite density and shrimp egg mass, but nonovigerous female P. pugio were more heavily infected than ovigerous ones. In addition, 1 metacercaria of M. turgidus in each of 2 specimens of P. vulgaris was parasitized by the haplosporidian Urosporidium crescens De Turk. This represents a new shrimp host record for this hyperparasite.  相似文献

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are parasitized by the protozoan Ophryocystis elektroscirrha throughout their geographical range. Monarchs inhabiting seasonally fluctuating environments migrate annually, and parasite prevalence is lower among migratory relative to non‐migratory populations. One explanation for this pattern is that long‐distance migration weeds out infected animals, thus reducing parasite prevalence and transmission between generations. In this study we experimentally infected monarchs from a migratory population and recorded their long‐distance flight performance using a tethered flight mill. Results showed that parasitized butterflies exhibited shorter flight distances, slower flight speeds, and lost proportionately more body mass per km flown. Differences between parasitized and unparasitized monarchs were generally not explained by individual variation in wing size, shape, or wing loading, suggesting that poorer flight performance among parasitized hosts was not directly caused by morphological constraints. Effects of parasite infection on powered flight support a role for long‐distance migration in dramatically reducing parasite prevalence in this and other host–pathogen systems.  相似文献

A fungal infection occurred in juvenile coonstripe shrimps,Pandalus hypsinotus, cultured at Hokkaido Institute of Mariculture, Hokkaido, Japan. The fungus was identified asLagenidium myophilum, the same fungus that had previously been isolated from the abdominal muscle of adult northern shrimps,Pandalus borealis, and larvae of the coonstripe shrimp. Histopathologically, numerous nonseptate hyphae were observed in the lesions, and melanized hemocytes were present within the blackened areas. The optimum temperature for growth of the present strain was 25–30°C, and the optimum NaCl concentration for growth was 0.5–1.0%. Its biological characteristics were compared with those ofLagenidium myophilum isolated from diseased larval coonstripe shrimp and adult northern shrimp. The fungus was pathogenic toward shrimps of the genusPandalus, which live in deep sea areas. The fungus could infect shrimps at various stages, from larva to adult.  相似文献

Host susceptibility and patterns of infection are predicted to differ between males and females due to sex-based tradeoffs between the demands of reproduction and costly immune defenses. In this study, we examined immune defenses and the response to experimental infection by a protozoan parasite, Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, in male and female monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus. We quantified two measures of immunity in late instar larvae: the concentration of circulating hemocytes and mid-gut phenoloxidase activity, and also quantified final parasite loads, body size, longevity, and wing melanism of adult butterflies. Results showed that females had greater average hemocyte counts than males in the absence of infection; males, but not females, showed an increased concentration of hemocytes in the presence of infection. However, higher hemocyte concentrations in larvae were not significantly correlated with lower adult parasite loads, and mid-gut phenoloxidase activity was not significantly associated with hemocyte counts or parasite treatments. Among unparasitized females, greater hemocyte concentrations were costly in terms of reduced body size, but for parasite-treated females, hemocyte concentrations and body size were positively associated. Across all monarchs, unparasitized butterflies showed greater wing melanism (darker forewings) than parasitized monarchs. Overall, this study provides support for differential costs of immune defenses in male and female monarch butterflies, and a negative association between parasite infection and monarch wing melanism.  相似文献

The parasite Microplitis croceipes required 1.1 days longer at 26°C to complete development in Heliothis zea larvae than was required for the fungus Nomuraea rileyi to kill the host larvae and sporulate. Host larvae parasitized by M. croceipes or infected with N. rileyi failed to complete a fifth larval molt or pupate. Of the remaining healthy larvae, one-half completed six larval stadia before popation. Larvae parasitized by M. croceipes were predisposed to infection by N. rileyi, but the fungus inhibited development of M. croceipes if host larvae were infected with N. rileyi within 1 day after parasitization.  相似文献

Theory suggests that symbiotic species should be monogamous and form long-lasting heterosexual pairs in/on hosts when inhabiting scarce and small hosts in environments where predation risk away from hosts is high (e.g., tropical subtidal). This prediction was tested with Pontonia mexicana which inhabits the relatively small and scarce amber pen-shell Pinna carnea in the tropical Caribbean. In agreement with theory, P. mexicana were found dwelling as heterosexual pairs in the mantle cavity of pen-shell individuals with more frequency than expected by chance alone. However, additional observations suggested that male-female pairing of P. mexicana does not last long. First, males paired with females that were close to molt and become sexually receptive more frequently than expected by chance alone. In monogamous species in which pairing appears to be long lasting, males occur with females in the same host, independent of the reproductive condition of the female. Second, the body size of paired shrimps was poorly correlated and the relationship between host and shrimp body size was weak. If males and females of P. mexicana were staying within host individuals for long periods of time, a tight correlation between host and shrimp size and between males and females in a pair would have been found. Lastly, sexual dimorphism in terms of cheliped size was evident; males invested considerably more resources to this body structure compared to females. In monogamous species in which pairing appears to be long-term, sexual dimorphism is low or absent given that sexual selection is weak in this mating system. Overall, our data suggests that monogamy in P. mexicana does not last long and that males switch among host individuals in search of receptive females. Manipulative experiments are necessary to understand the conditions favoring short- and long-term monogamy in symbiotic crustaceans.  相似文献

We investigated how infection by the mermithid nematode Gasteromermis sp. affected predation on its nymphal mayfly host, Baetisbicaudatus, by two invertebrate predators – the stonefly nymphs of Kogotusmodestus and the caddisfly larvae of Rhyacophilahyalinata. Predation trials and behavioral observations were conducted in stream-side, flow-through experimental chambers. When parasitized and unparasitized prey were offered in equal numbers, K. modestus consumed significantly more parasitized than unparasitized nymphs. R. hyalinata consumed equal numbers of both prey types. Behavioral observations of foraging K.␣modestus on parasitized and unparasitized prey suggested that the increased consumption of parasitized nymphs was due to differences in the behavior of infected mayflies in response to the predator. Specifically, parasitized nymphs drifted less often to escape an approaching predator (non-contact encounters) compared to unparasitized nymphs, which increased the number of contact encounters and attacks that occurred between K.␣modestus and parasitized prey. Because all hosts are castrated, these behavioral alterations affect only the fitness of the parasite, which is killed along with its host by invertebrate predation. We present a number of hypotheses to explain why the parasite causes increased predation on its host. These include the large size of the parasite affecting the sensory abilities of the host, the larger energetic costs of escape behavior for parasitized individuals, and natural selection from fish predation against drifting behavior by parasitized individuals. The shrimp Caridina nilotica is a major prey of the introduced Nile perch in Lake Victoria. In spite of heavy predation, the density of shrimps increased after the Nile perch boom and the concomitant disappearance of the haplochromine cichlids. In the same period, the mean size of gravid shrimps and the size at first maturity declined. This seems to indicate an increased predation pressure on adult shrimps. Before the Nile perch upsurge, specialised shrimp eaters and piscivores, among the haplochromine cichlids, only took adult shrimps, whereas we assume that most haplochromines used to include juvenile shrimps into their diet. Another important predator on adult shrimps was Bagrus docmak. The combined density of predators on adult shrimps in the pre-Nile perch era was estimated at 10 kg ha−1 and the potential predators on juveniles were estimated at 170 kg ha−1. After the Nile perch upsurge, only Nile perch up to 10 cm TL and Rastrineobola argentea fed on juvenile shrimps (ca. 36 kg ha−1) and Nile perch from 10 to 50 cm TL (ca. 13 kg ha−1) fed on adults. These rough estimates of the biomass of predators on shrimps before and after the Nile perch upsurge indicate a reduced predation pressure on juvenile shrimps. The disappearance of the haplochromines may have released competition with small Nile perch for juvenile shrimps, thus enhancing the recruitment of Nile perch.  相似文献

If parasites decrease the fitness of their hosts one could expect selection for host traits (e.g. resistance and tolerance) that decrease the negative effects of parasitic infection. To study selection caused by parasitism, we used a novel study system: we grew host plants (Urtica dioica) that originated from previously parasitized and unparasitized natural populations (four of each) with or without a holoparasitic plant (Cuscuta europaea). Infectivity of the parasite (i.e. qualitative resistance of the host) did not differ between the two host types. Parasites grown with hosts from parasitized populations had lower performance than parasites grown with hosts from unparasitized populations, indicating host resistance in terms of parasite’s performance (i.e. quantitative resistance). However, our results suggest that the tolerance of parasitic infection was lower in hosts from parasitized populations compared with hosts from unparasitized populations as indicated by the lower above‐ground vegetative biomass of the infected host plants from previously parasitized populations.  相似文献

Grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) fed liver containing sporulated oocysts of Eimeria funduli permitted development of sporozoites that became infective to a variety of killifishes. The shrimp's gastric mill mechanically ruptured the oocysts. Sporozoites then excysted through an opening in the sporocyst, and by 12 and 13 h postinfection (p.i.) numerous empty sporocysts and free sporozoites occurred extracellularly in the intestine of the grass shrimp. Even at 5, 7, 8, 11, 46, 79, and 83 days p.i., and presumably for many months, numerous sporozoites still occurred free in the alimentary tract or between intestinal cells. The coccidium did not infect killifish at either 2 or 4 days p.i., but did at 5 days; after release from the sporocyst, it became more elongate with a distinct nucleus and two relatively large refractile bodies. Infections of E. funduli resulted in about one half of the fish that were fed either entire hepatopancreas or tips of hepatopancreas from experimentally infected shrimp. Feeding either the entire alimentary tract proximal to the first abdominal segment or any portion of that section from experimentally infected shrimp produced infections in nearly all tested fish. Feeding portions of the cephalothorax without any attached hepatopancreas or alimentary tract failed to produce an infection. Feeding killifish with wild grass shrimp from an enzootic area produced infections in only a fourth of the fish sample; however, feeding experimentally infected wild, laboratory-reared, and juvenile grass shrimp produced infections in nearly all fish. Palaemonid shrimps other than P. pugio also can serve as intermediate hosts for E. funduli, and these shrimps include Palaemonetes vulgaris, P. paludosus, P. kadiakensis, and Macrobrachium ohione. In contrast, a penaeid shrimp, mysidacean, amphipod, and crab fed liver with sporulated oocysts did not produce infections when fed to killifish.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The apostomatous ciliate Hyalophysa chattoni, an ectosymbiont of the grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio, encysts and dedifferentiates within 48 h from the migratory tomite to a phoretic stage devoid of complex ciliary fields. The presettlement crawling and pivoting of the tomite may play a role in its initial attachment to the shrimp. Metamorphosis of exuviotrophic apostomes has been previously observed to take place immediately prior to host ecdysis. The study has found that Hyalophysa's metamorphosis to the feeding stage on grass shrimp is initiated by a cue from the premolt host and begins during earlier stages of the molt cycle (D0 and D1). Due to the long premolt stage of the host's diecdysic molt cycle, metamorphosis is initiated well before ecdysis (over six days). Hyalophysa was able to encyst and metamorphose within 41/4 h when exposed to shrimp in a late premolt stage, indicating that the control of apostome metamorphosis is solely host-dependent.  相似文献

The microsporidium Pleistophora crangoni n. sp. is a common parasite of Crangon franciscorum, C. nigricauda, and C. stylirostris in the vicinity of Yaquina Bay, Oregon. Characteristics of the parasite are described. Skeletal muscle was the only host tissue infected. The seasonal prevalence and intensity of the parasite in crangonids are described, based on examination of 1556 C. franciscorum, 3877 C. nigricauda, and 1674 C. stylirostris collected at monthly intervals from June 1975 through June 1976. Prevalence in C. franciscorum and C. stylirostris increased through the autumn and reached winter peaks of 30.3 and 41.0%, respectively, then decreased in the spring. Prevalence in C. nigricauda remained below 8% through the year. Intensity increased with size of the shrimps in the three species. Infection experiments and field observations suggest that only very young shrimps are susceptible to infection during a relatively short period during the summer months. Following natural infection, the parasite spreads within the host, indicating repeated schizogonic cycles. Parasitic castration was indicated by the absence of gravid infected female shrimps and was confirmed by histological examination. Ovaries of infected shrimps did not develop beyond a very early stage. A shift in sex ratio toward females in infected shrimps indicates that the parasite may influence sex determination. Shrimps showed little cellular response to infection. Only rarely in heavily infected shrimps was encapsulation of parasite cysts observed; necrotic tissue was occasionally observed. Infected shrimps usually succumbed before uninfected shrimps when subjected to oxygen stress. The collection of infected shrimps that were unusually large may indicate that these individuals grew faster or lived longer than uninfected shrimps.  相似文献

The mealybug parasitoid Anagyrus spec. nov near sinope (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is an undescribed parasitoid of the Madeira mealybug, Phenacoccus madeirensis Green (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae). We investigated the preference of Anagyrus spec. nov near sinope for six developmental stadia (first‐ and second‐instar nymphs, third‐instar immature females, third‐ or fourth‐instar immature males, pre‐reproductive adult females, and ovipositing adult females) of P. madeirensis and the fitness consequences of the host stage selection behavior. In the no‐choice test, Anagyrus spec. nov near sinope parasitized and completed development in all host stadia except third‐instar immature males. When all host stadia were offered simultaneously, the parasitoids preferred third‐instar immature and pre‐reproductive adult females. Dissection of the stung mealybugs revealed that the clutch size (number of eggs per host) was approximately four and three in the third‐instar and pre‐reproductive females, respectively, and one egg per first‐instar nymph. Parasitoids emerged from P. madeirensis parasitized at third‐instar or pre‐reproductive adult female completed development in the shortest duration, achieved a higher progeny survival rate, larger brood and body size, and the lowest proportion of males. We showed that the continued development of mealybugs had significant influence on the fitness of the parasitoids. Although deposited as eggs in first‐ or second‐instar nymphs, parasitoids emerged from mummies that had attained third‐instar or adult development achieved similar progeny survival rate, brood size, body size, and sex ratio as those parasitoids deposited and developed in third‐instar or adult mealybugs. By delaying larval development in young mealybugs, Anagyrus spec. nov near sinope achieved higher fitness by allowing the parasitized mealybugs to grow and accumulate body size and resources. We suggest that the fitness consequence of host stage selection of a koinobiont parasitoid should be evaluated on both the time of parasitism and the time of mummification.

Ecological and evolutionary consequences of host–parasite interactions have attracted considerable attention from evolutionary biologists. Previous studies have suggested that immune responsiveness may be genetically or developmentally linked with colour pattern, such that the evolution of animal colour patterns may be influenced by correlated responses to selection for parasite resistance. We studied interactions between the endoparasitic fly Leiophora innoxia (Meigen) (Diptera: Tachinidae) and its colour polymorphic pygmy grasshopper host Tetrix undulata (Sow.) (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae) to test for morph‐specific differences in parasitization and immune defence, and host‐induced variation in parasite phenotypes. Our results revealed that c. 2 and 30% of adult grasshoppers collected from the same natural population in two subsequent years, respectively were parasitized. Parasite prevalence was independent of host sex and colour morph. Pupae were larger if the parasite had developed in a female than in a male host, possibly reflecting host resource value or a physical constraint on larval growth imposed by host body size. Pupal size was also associated with host colour morph, with individuals that had developed in dark morphs being smaller at pupation compared to those that developed in paler morphs. However, immune defence, measured as the encapsulation response to a novel antigen, did not differ among individuals belonging to alternative colour morphs or sexes. Darker morphs warm up more quickly and prefer higher body temperatures than paler ones. Encapsulation was not influenced by maintenance temperature (15 vs. 30 °C), however, suggesting that indirect effects of coloration on parasite resistance mediated via differential body temperature are unlikely. The dependence of parasite body size on host colour morph may thus reflect plasticity of growth and development of the larvae in response to differential host body temperature, rather than variable host immune defence. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 85 , 373–383.  相似文献

Most research on cleaning symbioses on coral reefs has focused on fish clients being cleaned by smaller fishes. While many shrimps and other crustaceans are reported as cleaners, whether they remove parasites from fish hosts and can effectively regulate populations of ectoparasites is unclear. The effects of Pederson shrimp (Periclimenes pedersoni), spotted shrimp (P. yucatanicus), and banded coral shrimp (Stenopus hispidus), on the parasitic monogenean Neobenedenia melleni on a host reef fish, blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), were investigated. The abundance and size of N. melleni from fish with and without access to shrimps in a semi-natural macrocosm was quantified. P. pedersoni had a strong effect on both the abundance and size of parasites. In contrast, P. yucatanicus and S. hispidus had no effect on the abundance of parasites but had a small yet statistically significant effect on average size. These data suggest that P. pedersoni can play a significant role in the biological regulation of at least some ectoparasites on Caribbean reef fishes, but further suggest that some other shrimps regarded as “cleaners” may have little or no effectiveness at removing parasites and underscore the need for further verification before this term is applied.  相似文献

Members of the shrimp speciesLysmata seticaudata were observed to clean a morrey eel in the western Mediterranean Sea (Baleares, Spain). In contrast to the cleaning symbiosis of tropical shrimps, severalLysmata species have only one host, thus representing a primitive type of cleaning behaviour.Lysmata seticaudata is not dependent upon cleaning for food and usually these shrimps are found without a host.  相似文献

Polistes atrimandibularis is the obligate and permanent parasite of the social paper wasp Polistes biglumis bimaculatus. This parasite lives together with the host foundress for a considerable period on the invaded nest. Ovarian development was measured in females of the host species (foundresses and, when present, workers) from 18 parasitized and 14 non-parasitized colonies. The reproductive capacity of foundresses from parasitized nests decreased faster than that of foundresses from non-parasitized nests. These results indicate that the presence of the parasite lowers reproductive capacity of the host queen. Simultaneously, the fertility of the host worker is inhibited.  相似文献
