Size–density relationships (SDRs) frequently follow a power-law relationship, with exponents that compensate for the increase in population-level metabolic demand—the energetic equivalence rule. However, these exponents present a range of values, and elucidating its methodological and biological determinants has become a main issue. So far, a restricted set of potential relationships, mechanisms, and taxa have been considered. Here, we analyzed SDR in a population of tadpoles inhabiting a network of 16 temporal ponds. Alternative scaling regimes were detected using pacewise regressions and estimating exponents with maximum likelihood (ML). If discontinuities in the SDR are ignored, a scaling close to values reported elsewhere is observed. However, estimated slopes between discontinuities are steeper (threefold to fivefold) than those often reported, but congruent with the performance predicted for ML and the biases reported for other methods. Our estimations largely deviate from an energetic equivalence, suggesting that large individuals use less energy per unit area. The detection of different SDRs in the same database, with a strong decay in abundance with body size, points to a pattern poorly considered in previous studies, widening the range of patterns, mechanisms, and ecological, or evolutionary consequences of the SDRs. 相似文献

The mechanical inhomogeneity of the respiratory system is frequently investigated by measuring the frequency dependence of dynamic compliance, but no data are currently available describing the effects of body temperature variations. The aim of the present report was to study those effects in vivo. Peak airway pressure was measured during positive pressure ventilation in eight anesthetized rats while breathing frequency (but not tidal volume) was altered. Dynamic compliance was calculated as the tidal volume/peak airway pressure, and measurements were taken in basal conditions (mean rectal temperature 37.3 °C) as well as after total body warming (mean rectal temperature 39.7 °C). Due to parenchymal mechanical inhomogeneity and stress relaxation-linked effects, the normal rat respiratory system exhibited frequency dependence of dynamic lung compliance. Even moderate body temperature increments significantly reduced the decrements in dynamic compliance linked to breathing rate increments. The results were analyzed using Student’s and Wilcoxon’s tests, which yielded the same results (p < 0.05). Body temperature variations are known to influence respiratory mechanics. The frequency dependence of dynamic compliance was found, in the experiments described, to be temperature-dependent as temperature variations affected parenchymal mechanical inhomogeneity and stress relaxation. These results suggest that body temperature variations should be taken into consideration when the dynamic compliance–breathing frequency relationship is being examined during clinical assessment of inhomogeneity of lung parenchyma in patients. 相似文献

Contrary to conventional wisdom, NHANES data indicate that the poor have never had a statistically significant higher prevalence of overweight status at any time in the last 35 years. Despite this empirical evidence, the view that the poor are less healthy in terms of excess accumulation of fat persists. This paper provides evidence that conventional wisdom is reflecting important differences in the relationship between income and the body mass index. The first finding is based on distribution-sensitive measures of overweight which indicates that the severity of overweight has been higher for the poor than the nonpoor throughout the last 35 years. The second finding is from a newly introduced estimator, unconditional quantile regression (UQR), which provides a measure of the income-gradient in BMI at different points on the unconditional BMI distribution. The UQR estimator indicates that the strongest relationship between income and BMI is observed at the tails of the distribution. There is a statistically significant negative income gradient in BMI at the obesity threshold and some evidence of a positive gradient at the underweight threshold. Both of these UQR estimates imply that for those at the tails of the BMI distribution, increases in income are correlated with healthier BMI values. 相似文献

I used data reported in the scientific literature to examine latitudinal variation in litter size of polar bears in 18 different
populations. No relationship was found between litter size and latitude using non-weighted regression. Regression weighted
by sample size indicated a negative relationship with latitude. However, sampling biases caused by latitudinal differences
in the timing of sampling and cub mortality after den emergence could produce a latitudinal cline. Stratifying analyses by
sampling area, at dens or away from dens, revealed no latitudinal trend in litter size. Observed differences in litter size
among populations may result from variation in demography and ecosystem productivity that is not simply related to latitude.
I conclude that available data do not provide support for a biologically significant latitudinal cline in polar bear litter
size.

The calyx of Held (CoH) synapse serves as a model system to analyze basic mechanisms of synaptic transmission. Astrocyte processes are part of the synaptic structure and contact both pre- and postsynaptic membranes. In the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB), midline stimulation evoked a current response that was not mediated by glutamate receptors or glutamate uptake, despite the fact that astrocytes express functional receptors and transporters. However, astrocytes showed spontaneous Ca2+ responses and neuronal slow inward currents (nSICs) were recorded in the postsynaptic principal neurons (PPNs) of the MNTB. These currents were correlated with astrocytic Ca2+ activity because dialysis of astrocytes with BAPTA abolished nSICs. Moreover, the frequency of these currents was increased when Ca2+ responses in astrocytes were elicited. NMDA antagonists selectively blocked nSICs while D-serine degradation significantly reduced NMDA-mediated currents. In contrast to previous studies in the hippocampus, these NMDA-mediated currents were rarely synchronized. 相似文献

This study investigates changes in the distribution of body mass for adult Australians between 1995 and 2017/18. Using three nationally representative health surveys, we first apply the parametric generalised entropy (GE) class of inequality indices to measure the level of disparity in the body mass distribution. Results from the GE measure reveal that, while growth of body mass inequality is a population-wide experience, demographic and socio-economic factors explain only a modest portion of total inequality. We then apply the relative distributions (RD) method to garner richer insights on changes to the body mass distribution. The non-parametric RD method reveals growth in the proportion of adult Australians falling into the upper deciles of the body mass distribution since 1995. Then, hypothetically keeping the shape of the distribution unchanged, we discern that body mass increases across all deciles of the distribution (location effect) is an important contributor to the observed distributional change. After removing the location effect, however, we find a non-trivial role for distributional shape changes (growth of the proportion of adults at the upper and lower parts of the distribution as the proportion in the middle diminish). While our findings support current policy directions that target the population as a whole, factors driving shape changes to the body mass distribution also need consideration when designing anti-obesity campaigns, especially when aimed at women. 相似文献

Many metabolites in plant are highly polar and ionic. Their analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry can be problematic. Therefore a capillary electrophoresis–mass spectrometry (CE–MS) method with charge-driven separation characteristic was developed to investigate polar metabolites in tobacco. To obtain as many features as possible, extraction of polar metabolites was optimized by the design of experiments and evaluated by univariate statistics. Method validation was carried out to evaluate the analytical characteristics including calibration curve, precision, sample stability and extraction reproducibility. The developed method was successfully applied in studying 30 tobacco leaves obtained from Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in China. A total of 154 polar metabolites were identified based on available database. Multivariate pattern recognition clearly revealed the metabolic differences between the two geographic areas and 43 significantly different metabolites were defined by the non-parametric hypothesis test (Mann–Whitney U test) and false discovery rate. Some key metabolites involved in photosynthesis such as ribulose 1,5-disphosphate, fructose 1,6-diphosphate, glycine, betaine, GABA and serine were found to be susceptible to environmental conditions. This study shows that the metabolic profiling based on CE–MS can clearly discriminate tobacco leaves of different geographical origins and understand the relationship between plant metabolites and their geographical origins. 相似文献

Climate change driven advances in the date of sea ice breakup will increasingly lead to a loss of spring polar bear foraging opportunities on ringed seal pups creating a phenological trophic ‘mismatch’. However, the same shift will lead to a new ‘match’ between polar bears and ground nesting birds. This new match will be especially prevalent along the Cape Churchill Peninsula of western Hudson Bay where both polar bears and nesting snow geese are abundant. Easily foraged goose eggs will provide at least some of the earlier arriving polar bears with compensation for the energy deficit accrued through lost seal hunting opportunities. We examine the potential impact of changes in the extent and pattern of polar bear egg predation on snow goose abundance using projection models that account not only for increases in the temporal overlap of the two species but also for autocorrelation and stochasticity in the processes underlying polar bear onshore arrival and snow goose incubation. Egg predation will reduce reproductive output of the nesting lesser snow geese and, under all but trivial rates, will lead to a reduction in the size of their nesting population on the Cape Churchill Peninsula. Stochasticity associated with the asymmetrical advances in polar bear onshore arrival and the snow goose incubation period will lead to periodic mismatches in their overlap. These, in turn, will allow snow goose abundance to increase periodically. Climate driven changes in trophic matches and mismatches may reduce snow goose numbers but will not eliminate this over‐abundant species that poses a threat to Arctic landscapes. 相似文献

In order to understand high-resolution environmental changes, historical water level changes on decadal and centennial scales
have been conventionally analyzed employing documentary records and lake sediments. However, annual records are still limited.
Here we report the discovery of water level observations (up to monthly) in the historical literature of the Qing Dynasty
(1644–1912 AD). We reconstruct the chronologies of annual mean, maximum and minimum water level changes of Lake Weishan from
1758–1902 AD. The chronologies are compared with the precipitation data (dryness/wetness index data) of four stations in the
vicinity of Lake Weishan (i.e., Heze, Jinan, Linyi and Xuzhou). We suggest that the annual water level changes are related
to the amount of precipitation at the four stations. In addition, the flooding of the Yellow River significantly affects Lake
Weishan, always resulting in extremely high annual mean, maximum and minimum water levels in the lake. The flooding in 1871
and 1873 AD even destroyed the banks between Lake Weishan-Zhaoyang-Nanyang and Lake Dushan, thus forming a united lake. In
particular, we identify a high water level interval from 1851–1855 AD, just prior to the Yellow River channel change event

A simple and sensitive method is proposed for the determination of seven low-molecular mass aldehydes in human urine samples using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometric detection. Urine samples diluted twofold with 0.3 M hydrochloric acid are aspirated into a LiChrolut EN solid-phase extraction column impregnated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine for cleanup, derivatization and preconcentration of the aldehydes. After elution of the hydrazones with acetonitrile, an aliquot is injected directly into the chromatograph. Identification and quantification of aldehydes was performed with electrospray in negative ion mode by selected reaction monitoring. By using synthetic urine samples, linearity is established over the concentration range 0.1–30 μg/l and limits of detection from 15 to 65 ng/l. The intra- and inter-day precision (RSD, %) of the aldehydes ranged from 2.9% to 6.4% and 3.6% to 9.3%, respectively, and specific uncertainties were ca. 5.0 ± 0.3 ng for all aldehydes. Average recoveries performed on two levels by enriching synthetic urine samples ranged between 92% and 100%. The method was also validated in terms of study sample stability including long-term and short-term analyte stability, freeze–thaw and extract stability. In summary, the method proposed surpasses other recent chromatographic alternatives in terms of the limit of detection and sample requirements for analysis. 相似文献

The polar regions are experiencing rapid climate change with implications for terrestrial ecosystems. Here, despite limited knowledge, we make some early predictions on soil invertebrate community responses to predicted twenty‐first century climate change. Geographic and environmental differences suggest that climate change responses will differ between the Arctic and Antarctic. We predict significant, but different, belowground community changes in both regions. This change will be driven mainly by vegetation type changes in the Arctic, while communities in Antarctica will respond to climate amelioration directly and indirectly through changes in microbial community composition and activity, and the development of, and/or changes in, plant communities. Climate amelioration is likely to allow a greater influx of non‐native species into both the Arctic and Antarctic promoting landscape scale biodiversity change. Non‐native competitive species could, however, have negative effects on local biodiversity particularly in the Arctic where the communities are already species rich. Species ranges will shift in both areas as the climate changes potentially posing a problem for endemic species in the Arctic where options for northward migration are limited. Greater soil biotic activity may move the Arctic towards a trajectory of being a substantial carbon source, while Antarctica could become a carbon sink. 相似文献

Hunting regulations for grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in much of Alaska since 1980 increasingly were designed to reduce bear abundance in the expectation such regulations would lead to increased harvests by hunters of moose (Alces alces) and caribou (Rangifer tarandus). Regulations were liberalized during 1980–2010 primarily in the area we termed the Liberal Grizzly Bear Hunting Area (hereafter Liberal Hunt Area) which encompassed 76.2% of Alaska. By 2010, these changes resulted in longer hunting seasons (100% of Liberal Hunt Area had seasons > 100 days, 99.7% > 200 days, and 67.8% > 300 days), more liberal bag limits (99.1% of the Liberal Hunt Area with a bag limit ≥ 1/yr and 10.1% with a bag limit ≥ 2/yr), and widespread waiver of resident tag fees (waived in 95.7% of the Liberal Hunt Area). During 1995–2010, there were 124 changes that made grizzly bear hunting regulations more liberal and two making them more conservative. The 4-year mean for grizzly bear kills by hunters increased 213% between 1976–1980 (387 grizzly bears) and 2005–2008 (823 grizzly bears). Since 2000, long-term research studies on grizzly populations in the Liberal Hunt Area have been terminated without replacement. Management of large predators by the State of Alaska is constrained by a 1994 state statute mandating “intensive management” in areas classified as important for human consumptive use of ungulates. Current grizzly bear management in the Liberal Hunt Area is inconsistent with the recommendations of the National Research Council's 1997 report on predator management in Alaska. Current attitudes, policies and absence of science-based management of grizzly bears in Alaska are increasingly similar to those that resulted in the near extirpation of grizzly bears south of Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries. If current trends continue, they increase risks to portions of the largest and most intact population of grizzly bears in North America. © 2011 The Wildlife Society. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to compare the location of the body center of mass (CoM) determined by using a high accuracy reaction board (RB) and two different segment parameter models for motion analysis (Dempster, 1955, DEM and de Leva, 1996 adjusted from Zatsiorsky and Seluyanov, ZAT). The body CoM (expressed as percentage of the total body height) was determined from several subjects including athletes as well as physically active students and sedentary people. Some significant differences were found in the location of the body CoM between the used segment models and the reaction board method for all male subjects (n=58, 57.03±0.79%, 56.20±0.76% and 57.60±0.76% for RB, ZAT and DEM, respectively) and separately for male (n=12, RB 57.02±0.41%, ZAT 56.74±0.62%, DEM 58.19±0.60%) and female (n=12, RB 55.91±0.88%, ZAT 57.24±0.77%) students of physical activity. The ZAT model was a good match with RB for high jumpers (56.26±0.94% and 56.63±0.56%) whereas the DEM model was better for gymnasts (57.38±0.46% and 57.89±0.49%) and throwers (58.19±0.69% and 57.79±0.45%). For ice hockey players (IH) and ski jumpers (SJ) both segment models, ZAT and DEM, differed significantly from the reaction board results. The results of the present study showed that careful attention should be paid while selecting the proper model for motion analysis of different type of athletes. 相似文献

Under equilibrium conditions, previous theory has shown that the presence of omnivory destabilizes food webs. Correspondingly, omnivory ought to be rare in real food webs. Although, early food web data appeared to verify this, recently many ecologists have found omnivory to be ubiquitous in food web data gathered at a high taxonomic resolution. In this paper, we re-investigate the role of omnivory in food webs using a non-equilibrium perspective. We find that the addition of omnivory to a simple food chain model (thus a simple food web) locally stabilizes the food web in a very complete way. First, non-equilibrium dynamics (e.g. chaos) tend to be eliminated or bounded further away from zero via period-doubling reversals invoked by the omnivorous trophic link. Second, food chains without interior attractors tend to gain a stable interior attractor with moderate amounts of omnivory. 相似文献

Apart from differences in circadian phase position, individuals with different morningness–eveningness levels vary in many more characteristics. Particularly consistent relationships have been observed between morningness–eveningness and mood. Eveningness has been associated with disadvantageous mood, e.g. depressiveness in healthy individuals, and mood disorders. A concept of social jetlag suggests that evening subjects function in less advantageous environments due to discrepancies between internal and social time (societies promote morning-oriented functioning), which results in their lowered mood. Individual temperament, as defined by the Regulative Theory of Temperament (RTT), refers to the capacity of the human organism to meet environmental requirements – the greater the capacity, the less negative impact of external conditions. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine which RTT traits are linked to both morningness–eveningness and mood dimensions and to test whether they account for the relationship between morningness–eveningness and mood. A sample of 386 university students (267 female) aged between 19 and 47 (M?=?21.15, SD?=?4.23) years completed the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) Mood Adjective Check List, Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire and Formal Characteristics of Behaviour – Temperament Inventory. Analyses revealed lower endurance (EN) and higher emotional reactivity (ER) related to eveningness as well as to lower hedonic tone (HT), energetic arousal (EA) and to higher tense arousal (TA). Moreover, eveningness was associated with lower HT, EA and higher TA. Among RTT traits, EN was most strongly related to eveningness, and mediation analyses revealed that this temperamental trait fully mediated the relationship between eveningness and the three mood dimensions. The remaining RTT traits did not provide more explanation of the association between morningness–eveningness and mood than EN itself. If subjects did not differ in EN, the association between morningness–eveningness and mood was absent. EN is discussed as a protective factor against negative consequences of social jetlag and particularly lowered mood in evening individuals. 相似文献

A rapid, highly sensitive method for the determination of morphine and its metabolites morphine-3-glucuronide (M3G), morphine-6-glucuronide (M6G) and normorphine has been developed using high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray mass spectrometry, with the deuterated analogues as internal standards. The analytes were extracted automatically using end-capped C2 solid-phase extraction cartridges. Baseline separation of morphine, M3G and M6G was achieved on a LiChrospher 100 RP-18 end-capped analytical column (125×3 mm I.D., 5 μm particle size) with water–acetonitrile–tetrahydrofuran–formic acid (100:1:1:0.1, v/v) as the mobile phase. Morphine and normorphine coeluate and were separated mass spectrometrically. The mass spectrometer was operated in the selected-ion monitoring mode using m/z 272 for normorphine, m/z 286 for morphine, m/z 462 for morphine-6-glucuronide. Due to an interfering peak, M3G was measured by tandem mass spectrometry in the daughter-ion mode. The limits of quantitation achieved with this method were 1.3 pmol/ml for morphine, 1.5 pmol/ml for normorphine, 1.0 pmol/ml for M6G and 5.4 pmol/ml for M3G in serum or cerebrospinal fluid. The limits of quantitation achieved in urine were 10 pmol/ml for morphine, 20 pmol/ml for normorphine and M6G and 50 pmol/ml for M3G using a sample size of 100 μl. The method described was successfully applied to the determination of morphine and its metabolites in human serum, cerebrospinal fluid and urine in pharmacokinetic and drug interaction studies. 相似文献
