Abstract Impacts of an n C24 horticultural mineral oil (HMO) and two synthetic insecticides (carbaryl and methidathion) on the abundance and species diversity of soil-dwelling arthropods were evaluated in two citrus orchards in the coastal region of New South Wales, Australia. In the first orchard, mature Valencia orange trees were sprayed in summer with one of HMO, carbaryl or methidathion delivered at low (2000 L/ha) or high (10 000 L/ha) volumes; the sprays were applied either once (February) or twice (December and February). HMO had no significant impact but the synthetic insecticides, irrespective of spray frequency or spray volume, significantly reduced the abundance and species diversity of the arthropods including springtails and generalist predators, such as spiders, staphylinid beetles and mesostigmatid mites. In the second orchard, blocks of Washington navel and Valencia orange trees were sprayed with either HMO or methidathion; sprays were applied twice, 2 weeks apart, in late summer (February), first at a rate of 6500 L/ha and second at 5500 L/ha. Results were similar to those in the first orchard, except that the effect of methidathion on carabid beetles and ants was not significant. 相似文献

Maternal diabetes impairs fetal development and growth. We studied the effects of maternal diets enriched in unsaturated fatty acids capable of activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) on the concentrations of 15deoxyΔ12,14PGJ2 (15dPGJ2), lipid mass, and the de novo lipid synthesis in 13.5-day fetuses from control and diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by neonatal streptozotocin administration (90 mg/kg). Rats were treated with a standard diet supplemented or not with 6% olive oil or 6% safflower oil from days 0.5 to 13.5 of gestation. Fetuses from diabetic rats fed with the standard diet showed reduced 15dPGJ2 concentrations, whereas maternal treatments with olive and safflower oils increased 15dPGJ2 concentrations. Fetuses from diabetic rats showed increased concentrations of phospholipids and increased synthesis of triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol and free fatty acids. Diabetic rat treatments with olive and safflower oils reduced phospholipids, cholesterol, and free fatty acid concentrations and the de novo lipid synthesis in the fetuses. These effects were different from those observed in fetuses from control rats, and seem not to involve PPARγ activation. In conclusion, olive oil- and safflower oil-supplemented diets provide beneficial effects in maternal diabetes, as they prevent fetal impairments in 15dPGJ2 concentrations, lipid synthesis and lipid accumulation. 相似文献

Coffee green scales,Coccus celatus De Lotto andC. viridis (Green), are major pests of coffee in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Surveys for insect natural enemies of coffee green scales were
conducted in Kenya to find species suitable for introduction to PNG. Natural enemy communities in Kenya were found to be diverse,
particularly those located in the central highlands where 3 primary parasitoids,Metaphycus stanleyi Compere,M. baruensis Noyes andDiversinervus stramineus Compere (Encyrtidae), were dominant onC. celatus andC. alpinus De Lotto. It is suggested that these 3 parasitoids may be potential biological control agents forC. celatus. Several insect predators were found associated withC. celatus in the central highlands but most were only common in ant-free scale populations. An aphelinid primary parasitoid,Coccophagus rusti Compere, was the only natural enemy ofC. viridis located. This species, however, could be of potential as a biological control agent, especially in view of its previous use
in biological control against soft scales.

The Madagascan endemic, Bryophyllum delagoense (Crassulaceae), is a major weed in Queensland, Australia. Despite having first been recorded in Australia in the 1940s, it is far more invasive there than on the African mainland where it was introduced more than 170 years ago. This may be due to a number of factors, one of which could be the occurrence of new natural enemy associations in southern Africa. Among the insects of crassulaceous plants that have extended their host ranges, a stem-boring weevil, Alcidodes sedi, was studied to elucidate its status as a natural enemy of B. delagoense in southern Africa and as a candidate biological control agent for introduction to Australia. Laboratory studies indicated that damage inflicted by adult and larval feeding caused significant reductions in stem length and number of leaves. Preliminary host-range trials revealed that A. sedi can complete its development on other species in the Crassulaceae, including most of the introduced Bryophyllum species and some Kalanchoe species native to South Africa. Despite the oligophagous nature of A. sedi and the fact that it can complete its development on a number of ornamental species in the Crassulaceae, it should be considered a potential biological control agent in Australia. All of the native Crassulaceae in Australia are in the genus Crassula, most of which are very small and therefore unlikely to support the development of a large weevil like A. sedi. However, additional host-range trials will have to be undertaken in Australia to determine whether the weevil can be considered safe for release. 相似文献

The energetics and hydrogen bonding pattern of water molecules bound to proteins were mapped by analyzing structural data (resolution better than 2.3A) for sets of uncomplexed and ligand-complexed proteins. Water-protein and water-ligand interactions were evaluated using hydropatic interactions (HINT), a non-Newtonian forcefield based on experimentally determined logP(octanol/water) values. Potential water hydrogen bonding ability was assessed by a new Rank algorithm. The HINT-derived binding energies and Ranks for second shell water molecules were -0.04 kcal mol(-1) and 0.0, respectively, for first shell water molecules -0.38 kcal mol(-1) and 1.6, for active site water molecules -0.45 kcal mol(-1) and 2.3, for cavity water molecules -0.55 kcal mol(-1) and 3.3, and for buried water molecules -0.56 kcal mol(-1) and 4.4. For the last four classes, similar energies indicate that internal and external water molecules interact with protein almost equally, despite different degrees of hydrogen bonding. The binding energies and Ranks for water molecules bridging ligand-protein were -1.13 kcal mol(-1) and 4.5, respectively. This energetic contribution is shared equally between protein and ligand, whereas Rank favors the protein. Lastly, by comparing the uncomplexed and complexed forms of proteins, guidelines were developed for prediction of the roles played by active site water molecules in ligand binding. A water molecule with high Rank and HINT score is unlikely to make further interactions with the ligand and is largely irrelevant to the binding process, while a water molecule with moderate Rank and high HINT score is available for ligand interaction. Water molecule displaced for steric reasons were characterized by lower Rank and HINT score. These guidelines, tested by calculating HINT score and Rank for 50 water molecules bound in the active site of four uncomplexed proteins (for which the structures of the liganded forms were also available), correctly predicted the ultimate roles (in the complex) for 76% of water molecules. Seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieb. ex Spreng., grown in 4-1 pots, were stressed by withholding water while relationships between net assimilation rate (A) and intercellular partial pressure of CO2 (pi) in selected leaves were obtained repeatedly throughout the stress cycle. Water stress at first caused stomatal closure without any decline in the A(pi) relationship. As stress became more severe, the A(pi) relationship was affected as well. This always affected assimilation rate at both high and low intercellular partial pressures of CO2. It was then tested whether water-stressed leaves were more prone to photoinhibition than unstressed ones. Plants were water-stressed while at the same time subjected to strong photon flux area density (2000 mol quanta·m-2·s-1). A possible light-induced inhibition was assessed by comparing quantum yields of photosynthesis with light directed onto one or the other surface of the leaf. A decline in quantum yield was observed, and the decline on the previously irradiated side was more pronounced than on the previously shaded side, but the effect was small and disappeared entirely within 1 d of rewatering the plants. It is concluded that photoinhibition can play a role, but not an important one, in the effect of water stress on the A(pi) relationship in leaves of E. pauciflora.Abbreviations and symbols RuBP

Abstract Three field experiments were conducted in stone fruit orchards in the Goulburn Valley, northern Victoria, Australia to identify a user-friendly trap for use in attract and kill stations for control of Carpophilus spp. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae). A funnel trap design was compared with two types of delta trap in one experiment and two types of Lucitrap in another experiment. All traps were baited with synthetic co-attractant and synthetic pheromone. The funnel trap was the most effective type of trap tested. The funnel traps caught significantly more beetles than either the delta traps with bio-attractant or delta traps wrapped with insecticide impregnated banana wrap. No difference was observed between catches in either delta trap design. Lucitraps without covers caught significantly more beetles than Lucitraps with covers but funnel traps caught significantly more beetles than either type of Lucitrap. Beetle numbers caught in the funnel traps were three to five times higher than in Lucitrap. The use of funnel traps in attract and kill stations to protect stone fruit crops by suppressing the Carpophilus spp. population gave superior control to 'grower normal practice of spraying insecticides' both in terms of Carpophilus spp. numbers and in terms of reduction in percentage of fruit damaged. 相似文献

Triplicate groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.), of initial mass 5 g, were fed one of three practical type diets for 64 weeks. The three diets differed only in the added oil and were 100% fish oil (FO; diet A), 40% FO/60% vegetable oil blend (VO; diet B) where the VO blend was rapeseed oil, linseed oil and palm oil in the ratio 10/35/15 by weight and 40% FO/60% VO blend (diet C) where the ratio was 24/24/12 by weight. After final sample collection the remaining fish were switched to a 100% FO finishing diet for a further 20 weeks. After 64 weeks fish fed 60% VO diet B had significantly lower live mass and liver mass than fish fed diets A and C although SGR, FCR and length were not different between groups. There were no differences in any of the above parameters after either 14 or 20 weeks on the FO finishing diet. Fatty acid compositions of flesh were correlated to dietary fatty acids although there was selective retention of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3; DHA) regardless of dietary input. Inclusion of dietary VO resulted in significantly reduced flesh levels of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) while 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 were all significantly increased in fish fed the 60% VO diets. Fatty acid compositions of liver showed broadly similar changes, as a result of dietary fatty acid composition, as was seen in flesh. However, the response of flesh and liver to feeding a FO finishing diet was different. In flesh, DHA and EPA values were not restored after 14 or 20 weeks of feeding a FO finishing diet with the values in fish fed the two 60% VO diets being around 70% of the values seen in fish fed FO throughout. Conversely, and despite liver DHA and EPA levels being reduced to only 40% of the value seen in fish fed 100% FO after 64 weeks, the levels of liver DHA and EPA were not significantly different between treatments after feeding the FO finishing diet for 14 weeks. However, a 200 g portion of sea bass flesh, after feeding the experimental diets for 64 weeks followed by a FO diet for 14 weeks, contained 1.22 and 0.95 g of EPA + DHA for fish fed FO or 60% VO, respectively. Therefore, sea bass grown for most of the production cycle using diets containing 60% VO can still contribute a significant quantity of healthy n-3 HUFA to the human consumer. 相似文献
