Summary  A comparative study of the leaf outline morphometrics of Monstera adansonii var. klotzschiana, M. adansonii var. laniata and M. praetermissa was carried out. The study focused on populations in isolated montane humid (brejo) forests of Ceará state in Northeast Brazil and compared them with populations from Amazonia and the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Digitised outlines were prepared from a total of 1,695 field-collected leaf images from 20 populations, and elliptic Fourier analysis was used to generate matrices of coefficients, from which six shape variables (principal components) were extracted using Principal Components Analysis. Intra-population variability and inter-population differences were analysed with multivariate distance methods. Separate analyses were carried out for each of three leaf size classes (juvenile, submature, mature) because of the strong heteroblasty typical of this genus. Juvenile leaves were the least variable size class within populations of M. adansonii var. klotzschiana. The shape variables expressed very similar types of variation in all three size classes. The Ceará brejo populations of M. adansonii var. klotzschiana showed significant differences between mature leaf outlines in all pairwise comparisons; the Pacatuba population was the most distinct. The Ceará populations did not cluster together exclusively. In all three size classes, populations clustered together into their taxonomic groups, most clearly so in mature leaves. No correlation between morphological and geographic distance matrices was found, nor between morphological and molecular distance. The study showed that leaf outline shape is a practicable and useful quantitative trait for studying morphological variability at species, varietal and population levels. A population of Meridion circulare var.circulare (Greville) C.A.Agardh from Inner Mongolia was found to produce Innenschalen or internal spores.Examination of this population with light and scanning electron microscopy showed morphological differentiation between vegetative and spore morphologies.Vegetative valves typically bear costae and one rimoportula at the headpole.Spores lack costae and have two rimoportulae,one at the headpole and the other at the footpole.There is plasticity in the production of valve morphologies,and a variety of vegetative valve and spore combinations are evident.This population of M.circulare var.circulare has initial valves of over 90μm in length,and all of the initial cells encountered are acostate and bear two rimoportulae.These observations suggest that either spores are the product of sexual reproduction,or that initial valves may be produced parthenogenetically in Meridion.Spores as products of the sexual process have not been reported in diatoms previously,and parthenogenesis in Meridion was reported previously but discounted in other published reports.The plasticity of valve morphologies expressed in M.circulare var.ciculare,between vegetative valves and spores (and back) across a short temporal period suggests that diatoms can alter their cell wall structure dramatically and quickly in response to external variables.  相似文献

Microsatellite loci were isolated from a Mahonia aquifolium cultivar. We describe the variability of 10 loci in invasive European and native North American M. aquifolium and their transspecies amplification in native Mahonia repens and Mahonia pinnata from North America and one species of the related genus Berberis (Berberis vulgaris), native to Europe. The markers should be useful to reveal the genetic origin of invasive Mahonia populations and differences in the genetic make up between invasive and native populations.  相似文献

A new species from the diatom genus Gomphoneis, G. mesta, was described following morphological and ultra-structural analyses of its frustules by light and scanning electron microscopy. The valve striation consisting of double rows of areolae and the presence of longitudinal lines dictate the systematic position of this taxon in the genus Gomphoneis. The set of features that distinguishes G. mesta from allied taxa is small valves, 26.5–81.6 μm in length and 7–12.5 μm in width, lanceolate to clavate shape, with a broadly lanceolate axial area, and longitudinal lines positioned next to the valve margins, thus contributing to a general thickening of the valve outline. When compared to other members of the genus, G. mesta most resembles G. magna Kociolek & Stoermer. Gomphoneis mesta dominates the epilithic community, growing in the Cherna Mesta, a pristine high-mountainous tributary of the Mesta River in Bulgaria. The species has been also found as small populations in all other benthic habitats of the Cherna Mesta and in a few locations along the Mesta River.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships among members of the red algal genus Hildenbrandia have not been well understood for several reasons. For example, the genus contains both marine and freshwater representatives, all of which are non-calcified and crustose, and few have definitive morphological characters for classification. Hildenbrandia is also assumed to be completely asexual (reproduction by tetrasporangia in marine forms and by gemmae in freshwater populations), and characters of the female gametangial system and post-fertilization structures are not available for comparative studies. Currently there are 14 marine and five freshwater species and infraspecific taxa recognized within the genus. We used phylogenetic analyses (parsimony, distance and maximum likelihood) of DNA sequences of commonly employed genes ( rbc L and 18S rRNA) to examine the evolutionary relationships among representatives of many of these taxa. In addition, we employed morphometrics (principal co-ordinates and cluster analyses) of several measured characters of these same representatives, as well as all available type specimens, to determine the number of morphologically-delimited entities within the genus. Thus far our results indicate that some characters traditionally used to distinguish species of Hildenbrandia , such as tetrasporangial division pattern, may not be useful in some cases, and a revision of the taxonomy of the genus will be necessary. Although the marine and freshwater species of Hildenbrandia appear to be well separated in our molecular analyses of European specimens, this trend was not observed for North American specimens. High sequence divergence values were calculated for both the rbc L and 18S rRNA genes of Hildenbrandia , compared to other red algal genera.  相似文献

The influence of geography and genotype on shell shape (outline) and trait (morphometric) variation among North Atlantic blue mussels and their hybrids has been examined. Shape differences among reference taxa (Mytilus trossulus, Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis) were consistent with an association between taxon‐specific genes and shape genes. Newfoundland M. edulis × M. trossulus populations and northern Quebec M. trossulus populations exhibited an uncoupling of taxon‐specific genes from shape genes, whereas Nova Scotia M. trossulus populations and SW England M. edulis × M. galloprovincialis populations exhibited an association between taxon‐specific genes and shape genes. We found no evidence of a geographic effect (NE versus NW Atlantic) for shape variation, indicating that the genotype effect is stronger than any geographic effect at macrogeographic scales. Pronounced differences were observed in trait variability consistent with an association between taxon‐specific genes and trait genes in European populations, and trait divergence of New York M. edulis from all European mussels. Trait variability in mussels from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and northern Quebec indicated an uncoupling of taxon genes from trait genes, whereas trait variability in SW England M. edulis × M. galloprovincialis populations was consistent with background genotype, indicating a strong association between taxon genes and trait genes. A pronounced macrogeographic split (NE versus NW Atlantic) regardless of taxonomy was observed, indicating that geography exerts a greater influence than genotype on trait variation at the macrogeographic scale. This is consistent with pronounced within‐taxon genetic divergence, indicative of different selection regimes or more likely of different evolutionary histories of mussels on either side of the North Atlantic. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 96 , 875–897.  相似文献

Gene flow can effectively suppress genetic divergence among widely separated populations in highly mobile species. However, the same may not be true of species that typically disperse over shorter distances. Using mtDNA restriction-site and sequence analyses, we evaluate the extent of divergence among populations of two small relatively sedentary North American canids, the kit and swift foxes (genus Vulpes). We determine the significance of genetic differentiation among populations separated by distance and those separated by discrete topographic barriers. Our results show the among-population component of genetic variation in kit and swift foxes is large and similar to that of small rodents with limited dispersal ability. In addition, we found two distinct groupings of genotypes, separated by the Rocky Mountains, corresponding to the traditional division between kit and swift fox populations. Previous workers have characterized these morphologically similar populations either as separate species or subspecies. Our mtDNA data also suggest that kit and swift fox populations hybridize over a limited geographic area. However, the sequence divergence between kit and swift foxes is similar to that between these taxa and the arctic fox (Alopex lagopus), a morphologically distinct species commonly placed in a separate genus. This result presents a dilemma for species concepts, and we conclude that kit and swift foxes should be recognized as separate species.  相似文献

Sequences of chloroplast gene matK and internal transcribed spacers of nuclear ribosomal RNA genes were used for phylogenetic analyses of Aesculus, a genus currently distributed in eastern Asia, eastern and western North America, and southeastern Europe. Phylogenetic relationships inferred from these molecular data are highly correlated with the geographic distributions of species. The identified lineages closely correspond to the five sections previously recognized on the basis of morphology. Ancestral character-state reconstruction, a molecular clock, and fossil evidence were used to infer the origin and biogeographic history of the genus within a phylogenetic framework. Based on the molecular phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus, sequence divergence, and paleontological evidence, we infer that the genus originated during the transition from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary (~65 M.Y.B.P.) at a high latitude in eastern Asia and spread into North America and Europe as an element of the “boreotropical flora”; the current disjunct distribution of the genus resulted from geological and climatic changes during the Tertiary.  相似文献

Long-term morphological changes were investigated in the conodont genus Palmatolepis, using a Fourier analysis of the outline of platform elements. Three time-slices and four Late Frasnian - Early Famennian sections on North Gondwana were studied. No difference existed between locations, but shape variations were recorded associated with the successive Kellwasser events. The Middle Famennian period was analyzed in a section located at the Baltica margin across the annulata event. Some morphological changes may be related to the deposition of the corresponding black shales, but the main feature is a heterogeneity of the populations, which can be split into two morphological types. Latest Famennian conodonts from another North Gondwanan section show only minor shape changes during this time interval, which is environmentally stable prior to the global Hangenberg event. Based on synthetic shape variations across the whole period an morphological trend towards narrower elements is observed. This morphological change happens step-wise in response to global events. The amplitude of the shape shift is proportionally related to the extend of the successive Late Devonian global events.  相似文献

Pollen grains have long fascinated biologists who used their remarkable interspecific diversity as a marker to infer profiles of past and present vegetations and environment. This study addresses the question of the diversity of the morphology of pollen grains at the intraspecific level: how different are pollen grains of the same species sampled in different populations? Such differences are expected, and are actually well known to palynologists, but at the same time technically challenging to quantify. We used elliptic Fourier analysis, a powerful morphometric approach for the comparison of outlines, on equatorial and polar views of 30 pollen grains sampled in two different populations for each of five tropical species, thus yielding 600 outlines. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed intraspecific variation of shape of the pollen grains in three out of the five species studied. Our goal here was to test if there were differences in the shape of pollen. This, to our knowledge, would be the first such study of this particular aspect of palynology. We also discuss some relevant evolutionary hypotheses. Further studies using outline analysis, coupled with a choice of appropriate sampling strategies, to suit varying environmental conditions, would prove of great value in testing such hypotheses.  相似文献
