Laboratory populations of the mud snail, Ilyanassa (Nassarius) obsoleta (Say), were separately maintained ad libidum on three different diets: vegetable (spinach), meat (shrimp), and a mixed diet of both. In one experiment where populations of meat-fed and vegetable-fed snails were maintained for 13 months, survivorship was found to be much higher in the vegetable-fed population. No growth occurred in either of these populations.In another experiment in which snails in all three dietary regimes were separately maintained, survivorship for meat-fed snails was found to be only slightly greater than for a starvation control group. Survivorship was again higher for the vegetable-fed snails, and also for the snails fed the mixed diet. However, only snails fed the mixed diet exhibited growth during the experiment. These results indicate that I. obsoleta is an obligate omnivore, requiring both animal and plant food sources in its diet.  相似文献

Levels of lysozyme activity have been determined in the serum and cells of untreated Biomphalaria glabrata and in snails that had been challenged with heat-killed Bacillus megaterium and water at 1, 2, and 4 hr postinjection. Lysozyme activities have also been ascertained in sham-injected snails at 1, 2, and 4 hr postchallenge. Our results indicate significant alterations in the serum lysozyme activity levels at 2 and 4 hr postchallenge with bacteria and at 1 hr postinjection of water. Also, there is a significant increase in cell lysozyme activity at 1 hr postchallenge with B. megaterium. It is concluded that lysozyme is released from phagocytes into serum as a result of challenge with B. megaterium. Although the exact role of the released enzyme is uncertain, it is hypothesized that it may serve as a humoral defense molecule.  相似文献

At least 30 species of nonindigenous freshwater snails have invaded North America. The risk of these snails invading new lakes depends upon their ability to survive overland transport. We first reviewed published laboratory experiments using freshwater snails, which show numerous species are able to tolerate days of air exposure. We then tested tolerance to drying of three species of invasive aquatic snails that are widespread in Wisconsin: Bithynia tentaculata, Cipangopaludina chinensis, and Viviparus georgianus. In a series of seven experiments, we simulated boater transport by placing snails individually in mesh bags, hung outdoors, and confined in a screen tent. The screen roof allowed exposure to both sun and rain, and an on-site weather station recorded temperature, precipitation, and humidity. All three species exhibited high survivorship, with some individuals alive at the end of most experiments: 42 days for B. tentaculata and V. georgianus and 63 days for C. chinensis. Viable young were released by C. chinensis after 54 days of exposure. Overall, our results indicate that these invasive snails should readily survive long periods of transport overland, indicating a need for continued vigilance of recreational boaters entering lakes.  相似文献

Head-starting is a conservation strategy in which young animals are protected in captivity temporarily before their release into the wild at a larger size, when their survival is presumably increased. The Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is in decline, and head-starting has been identified as one of several conservation measures to assist in recovery. To evaluate the efficacy of indoor head-starting, we released and radio-tracked 68 juvenile tortoises from a 2015 cohort in the Mojave National Preserve, California, USA. We released 20 tortoises at hatching (control) in September 2015, and reared 28 indoors and 20 outdoors in predator-proof enclosures for 7 months before releasing them in April 2016. We monitored tortoises at least weekly after release until 27 October 2016, and documented survivorship, movement, and surface activity. We estimated survivorship by treatment and evaluated effects of treatment, proximity to a raven (Corvus corax) nest (predator) coincidentally established after release, distance moved between monitoring events, surface activity, and release size on individual fate in a generalized linear model. Although indoor head-start tortoises reached the size of 5–6-year-old wild tortoises by release at 7 months of age, survival did not differ significantly among the 3 treatment groups. Combined annual survival was 0.44 (95% CI = 0.34–0.58). Tortoises that were closer to an active raven nest were significantly more likely to die, as were those seen more often outside their burrows and active aboveground. Predicted estimates for short-term probability of survival approached 1.0 as distance from a raven nest exceeded approximately 1.6 km. Rearing treatment, movement distance, and body size were not significant predictors of fate over the 1-year monitoring period. Head-started tortoises released ≥1.6 km from areas of raven activity will likely have higher short-term survival. Population recovery through head-starting alone is unlikely to be successful if systemic ecosystem-level issues, such as habitat degradation and conditions that promote human-subsidized predators, are not ameliorated. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

This work presents the results of an investigation that aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of releases of the omnivorous predator Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera, Miridae) in the control of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Homoptera, Aleyrodidae) on greenhouse melon. Two greenhouse trials were performed, one in spring and one in summer. Adults of M. caliginosus were released at two release rates (two and six per plant) in an initial infestation of 10 adult whitefly per plant. The high release rate did control the whitefly populations. Results of the lower release ratio did not work in the second trial, presumably due to excessive pruning of the crop that may have affected predator establishment. No damaged fruits were recorded. Laboratory trials were also done to examine the effects of plant and variable prey availability on predator fertility and survivorship. Results showed that low-prey availability significantly reduced survivorship and fertility of M. caliginosus, and explained why predator establishment was the same for both predator release rates.  相似文献

Populations of Ilyanassa obsoleta, a snail abundant in estuaries along the Atlantic coast of North America, exhibit much unobvious spatial heterogeneity. Lifetime dispersal of snails stands to be great, as they live for decades and can make daily moves of tens of meters. They could distribute uniformly, but in many populations there are characteristic spatial distributions of differently sized and trematode-infected snails. This is the case where this work was done in the Savages Ditch habitat of Rehoboth Bay, Delaware, U.S.A.. The study was designed to explain how the spatial heterogeneity in that habitat arises as a consequence of snail movements. Individually marked snails were tested for trematode infections and released from five well-separated positions. Snails released from each position were in three groups: (1) natives, collected from the position area, and (2) large and (3) small “outlanders”, collected from a site in the habitat that was separated from all release positions, had enhanced tidal currents, and where both size classes were available. Locations of found, released snails were noted for up to four years. Depending on collection site, many native snails were parasitized. In any case, they always tended to disperse in the vicinity where initially collected. Large outlanders (∼ 21% infected) dispersed variably, moving back toward their source area from certain release positions, but not from others. Small outlanders (∼ 4% infected), almost regardless of where released, tended to disperse back toward their source area. Dispersals of these snail groups from the five release positions explains much about how the pattern of spatial heterogeneity seen in the habitat arises.  相似文献

The efficiency of S. mansoni miracidia in locating and infecting Biomphalaria pfeifferi in Gezira canals has been studied under field conditions. When S. mansoni eggs were introduced into clean stagnant water in small field channels, the miracidia hatched to infect 100% of 30 snails in cages at the release point. Fifteen metres upstream and downstream 13% of caged snails were infected but no infections were found in snails 20 m away.When eggs were released into the same canal in flowing water (8.3 cm · s–1), no infections were detected in any of the caged snails placed 0–100 m downstream. Releasing hatched miracidia instead of eggs resulted in infections in all cages at 5 m intervals from 0-100 m. The release of eggs into flowing water was likened to the method by which S. haematobium eggs are deposited during urination. The 0% infection suggests that eggs will be swept away from the point of contamination by the flow. Thus only urination into stagnant water will lead to heavy snail infection rates.When eggs were released into a small pond-like minor canal tail end snail infection rates were only 3%. This was probably due to the larger water volume, smaller number of caged snails, and the presence of vegetation and other fauna which may be decoys or predators.The results highlight how very high snail infection rates can be produced under ideal conditions but also show how large snail and miracidia numbers are required in natural situations.  相似文献

Exposure to miracidia of Echinostoma liei resulted in increased mortality and reduced growth of 1–2 mm albino Biomphalaria glabrata snails whether or not the snails became infected. Growth rates for infected and exposed but uninfected snails were significantly more variable than growth rates of unexposed snails. Retarded growth and increased mortality were detected as rapidly as seven to nine days after exposure. Neither growth nor survivorship of 4–6 mm snails was altered upon exposure to or infection by E. liei.  相似文献

To examine density dependence in the survival, growth, and reproduction of Pomacea canaliculata, we conducted an experiment in which snail densities were manipulated in a paddy field. We released paint-marked snails of 15–20 mm shell height into 12 enclosures (pens) of 16 m2 at one of five densities – 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128 snails per pen. The survival rate of released snails was 95% and was independent of snail density. The snail density had a significant effect on the growth and egg production of individual snails. This density dependence may have been caused by reduced food availability. The females at high density deposited fewer and smaller egg masses than those at low density, and consequently produced fewer eggs. The females at densities 8 and 16 deposited more than 3000 eggs per female, while the females at density 128 oviposited only 414 eggs. The total egg production per pen was, however, higher at higher snail density. The survival rates of juvenile snails were 21%–37% and were independent of adult density. The juvenile density was positively correlated with the total egg production per pen and hence was higher at higher adult density. However, the density of juveniles larger than 5 mm in shell height, i.e., juveniles that can survive an overwintering period, was not significantly different among density treatments. These results suggest that snail density after the overwintering period is independent of the density in the previous year. Thus, density dependence in growth and reproduction might regulate the population of P. canaliculata in paddies. Received: October 23, 1998 / Accepted: July 16, 1999  相似文献

Opisthorchis viverrini requires Bithynia snails as the first intermediate host and cyprinid fish as the second intermediate host. Very low natural infection rates have been reported in Bithynia snails, but very high rates have been found in cyprinid fish in the same endemic region. This study investigated the effect of light intensity, the most important stimulus, on the quantity of O. viverrini cercariae shed from naturally infected Bithynia (Digoniostoma) siamensis goniomphalos snails. Snails were evaluated for cercariae output every hour after exposure to various light intensities for a total period of 7 h. The same infected snail was tested under different intensities of light: in the dark, and at 1000, 3000 and 5000 lx. The data showed that under exposure to 1000 and 3000 lx of light, the average percentage and number of cercariae released were higher than that exposed to 5000 lx during the first 2 h of the experiment. In contrast, under higher illumination (5000 lx) a longer time (6 h) was required to stimulate the peak emergence of cercariae. Darkness was not able to induce O. viverrini cercariae emergence. Among the three intensities of light, exposure at 1000 lx induced the highest average number of released cercariae per snail and the highest percentage of cercarial emergence within the first 2 h (125, 54.86%), followed by exposure at 3000 lx (69, 25.58%) and 5000 lx (12, 7.78%). The results suggest that the light intensity of 1000 lx for 2 h would be optimal for O. viverrini cercarial shedding from naturally infected B. (D.) siamensis goniomphalos snails.  相似文献

Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts originally derived from monomiracidially infected Biomphalaria glabrata snails were serially transplanted into the cephalopedal sinus of anesthetized snails by the microsurgical implantation of fragments of parasitized hepato-pancreas and ovotestis. Three to six passages each of five male and five female clones were maintained for as long as 2.0 years. Of the recipient snails which survived surgery, 87% released cercariae, usually beginning 5–7 weeks after surgery. The percentage of snails which released cercariae increased with successive passages. The mean survival time of surgically infected snails after cercarial emergence began was 9.2 ± 0.5 weeks, nearly the same as that of miracidially infected snails. Longevities of snails infected with male or female clones were similar. Recipient snail size and age did not influence cloning success. Beginning 5 weeks from the onset of cercarial emergence large numbers of cercariae (a mean of 3900/snail from male clones and 1300/snail from females) were obtained during each shedding period. These results clearly demonstrate that the microsurgical transplantation of sporocysts is a practical means of maintaining and expanding populations of genetically homogeneous schistosomes (clones).  相似文献

Pomacea canaliculata is a South American freshwater snail considered as one of the world’s worst invasive alien species. A temperature of around 25 °C has usually been considered to be optimal for rearing P. canaliculata. Nevertheless, snails have not been reared under a wide range of temperatures to reveal the optimum for performance in terms of population increase. We investigated the effect of temperature on growth, survival and reproduction, estimating demographic parameters for P. canaliculata in the wide range of temperatures at which these snails are active (15–35 °C). No reproductive activity was evidenced for the snails reared at 15 °C, probably explained by the small sizes attained at this temperature. Temperatures above 25 °C did not promote a significant acceleration in growth so higher temperatures will not result in a reduction in time to reach maturity. In fact, snails from 25 and 30 °C began reproduction at the same age. We report here for the first time a detrimental effect of high temperatures that provoked a significant decrease in the contribution of snails to the next generation: the viability of eggs from the snails reared at 30 °C was very low and the snails exposed to a constant water temperature of 35 °C were unable to produce eggs. Our findings reveal a new environmental constraint that could be a determinant of the range limits of this species in invaded regions, especially during the coming decades, anticipating the scenario predicted from global warming.  相似文献

Lymnaea catascopium snails infected with Schistosomatium douthitti grew faster than uninfected control snails during the first 2 months postexposure, but thereafter grew more slowly, and by 8 months postexposure were significantly smaller. When reared in isolation, uninfected snails survived significantly longer (mean survival time, 515 days) than snails exposed to three miracidia each (400 days), which in turn survived longer than snails exposed to 10 miracidia per snail (223 days). When maintained in aquaria in contact with other snails, snails exposed to three miracidia each survived longer (227 days), but not significantly longer, than control snails (198 days). Production of large numbers of eggs by control snails grown under the latter conditions may account for their reduced survival. The ovotestes and accessory genitalia of snails infected with S. douthitti were much reduced in size in comparison with uninfected control snails. These effects were most pronounced in snails which had been infected for over 100 days. Egg production was normally totally inhibited if snails were infected before the onset of sexual maturity. If infected after the onset of maturity, eggs were produced only during the prepatent period.  相似文献

Habitat heterogeneity often affects movement behaviours of animals, and consequently their spatial distribution. We evaluated the effect of immersion at low tide on the distribution, fine-scale movement patterns and daily movement patterns of the mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta on a mudflat in the upper Bay of Fundy, Canada. Mud snails migrate onto intertidal mudflats in the summer, and our field survey showed that their density was higher inside tide pools relative to adjacent areas that are exposed at low tide. Using time-lapse videography, we evaluated the effect of snail size, snail density, and immersion at low tide on fine-scale movement patterns of I. obsoleta. Time until snails stopped moving and burrowed was unaffected by snail size, but snails at low and high densities burrowed somewhat faster than those at intermediate densities. Snail size and snail density had no detectable effect on displacement speed or linearity of displacement. Immersion affected snail movement: snails within tide pools delayed burrowing and traveled in more convoluted paths compared to those on exposed mud. Snails increased their turning angles within tide pools, which is probably the mechanism by which aggregations are formed. We also performed a mark-recapture experiment to compare daily movement patterns of snails released inside and outside tide pools. Snails released in tide pools moved shorter distances, but did not orient themselves differently than snails released outside tide pools. Both groups exhibited significant directionality, moving against the mean water current direction over 24 h. In sum, immersion at low tide affected the behaviour and spatial distribution of snails, resulting in snail aggregations within tide pools. These snail aggregations, in turn, may be a major factor influencing spatial dynamics on mudflats, including causing changes in distribution patterns of the burrowing amphipod Corophium volutator, a dominant inhabitant and key species in the food web of mudflats.  相似文献

The remarkable biodiversity of the littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika appears to be at risk through increasing sediment input caused by anthropogenic pressures. An in-situ field experiment was done to investigate the effects of increased sediment loads on the size-structure of gastropod communities on a rocky shore site in the lake. Gastropods were removed prior to the addition of sediment, and subsequent further removals were done after seven days and six months. Relative to controls, mean size of individuals of both Lavigeria grandis (Smith) and Lavigeria sp. Q decreased following the addition of sediment, while that of Lavigeria sp. P increased. A subsequent laboratory experiment found that survivorship of larger individuals of Lavigeria grandis was less than smaller individuals in the sediment-impacted treatment. It is hypothesised that decreased algal availability on sediment-impacted rock surface increased starvation of larger snails. Alterations to the size-structure of Lavigeria sp. P populations appear related to intraspecific differences in competitive ability. These results highlight the complex and unpredictable effects of increases in sediment loads on aquatic ecosystems and have implications for the conservation of littoral communities in sediment-impacted areas.  相似文献

The accumulation of larval trematodes by Ilyanassa obsoleta (Gastropoda) at 2 estuarine sites in Delaware was studied. Initial infection status of snails was assayed by looking for shed cercariae. Native snails (most already infected) were deployed at sites A and B, and sentinel snails (putatively uninfected) were deployed at site B. All were individually marked and, if found, reassessed for infection after being free 1-3 summers. Himasthla quissetensis, Lepocreadium setiferoides, Zoogonus rubellus, Austrobilharzia variglandis, and Gynaecotyla adunca infections were observed in recovered snails. At site A, in 1993, 62 natives were recovered. Among the 26 initially testing uninfected, 15 had infections at recovery. Of 36 that released cercariae, 26 had the infection initially indicated. Of sentinels released at site B in 1996, 3 of 16 had infections when recollected. One probably was infected before transplant; at least 2 were infected at site B during 1996-1997. Among site B natives, 26 were later examined by dissection in 1996; 22 had the infection status initially revealed. Some site B natives (n = 35) escaped recapture in 1996 but were found in 1997, or 1998, or both, and were reexamined, most by cercarial release. The same cercariae were produced by 30. Among natives (both sites, n = 123), 27.6% exhibited some difference in infection status compared to the initial assay. This probably overestimates changes. Some differences were real but most can be discounted as cases where initial infection status was misrepresented.  相似文献

Recently, great attention has been paid to in situ gel-forming chitosan/glycerol-phosphate (chitosan/Gp) solution due to their good biodegradability and thermosensitivity. This in situ gel-forming system is injectable fluid that can be introduced into the body in a minimally invasive manner prior to solidifying within the desired tissue. At the present study, insulin release from chitosan/Gp solution has been investigated. Insulin in different concentrations was loaded in two formulations of chitosan/Gp solution and in vitro drug release was studied over a period of 3 weeks. Results indicated that the release of insulin from chitosan/Gp gel decreases by increasing in Gp salt and initial insulin concentration. Stability of released insulin was investigated by 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate probe. Results proved that insulin have been released in its native form. Because of simple preparation and administration, prolonged release of insulin and stability of released insulin, this in situ gel-forming system could be used as a controlled release delivery system for insulin.KEY WORDS: biodegradable, chitosan, controlled release, in situ forming, insulin  相似文献

Parasite-induced behavioral changes in their hosts favor to complete the lifecycle of parasites. Schistosome infection is also known to cause physiological changes in infected freshwater snail intermediate hosts. Here, we report, a novel phenomenon in which Schistosoma mansoni, a highly debilitating worm affecting millions of people worldwide, alters the phototropic behavior of Biomphalaria glabrata, the vector snail. S. mansoni-infection enhanced positive phototropism of vector snails and infected snails spent significantly more time in light. Possibly, these behavioral changes help the parasite to be released efficiently from the infected intermediate hosts, and to infect mammalian hosts.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the susceptibility of Gezira Biomphalaria pfeifferi snails to S. mansoni miracidia and the relationship between miracidia and daughter sporocyst production at the 10–17 day development stage. The relationship between snail numbers, miracidia numbers and water volume has also been studied. Two non susceptible snails, Bulinus truncatus and Cleopatra bulimoides, both of which occur naturally in Gezira canals, were tested to see if they act as decoys for S. mansoni miracidia.The results showed that the B. pfeifferi are 100% susceptible to S. mansoni invasion, at least to the daughter sporocyst development stage. The more miracidia that penetrated the more daughter sporocysts were produced, however individual variation and overlap were great. When one miracidium was released to find one snail it succeeded in low water volumes (5 m, 50 ml), but failed in 5 litres. When 100 miracidia were released mortality of snails was high suggesting superinfection particularly when only one or five snails were available. Among survivors daughter sporocyst counts were very high. Cleopatra and Bulinus snails do have a decoy effect when present in large numbers. In their presence the number of infected snails was marginally reduced and the number of daughter sporocysts greatly reduced. However, if superinfection is reduced by decoy effect, it is conceivable that Biomphalaria may be protected by decoy snails in circumstances where miracidia counts are high.  相似文献
