An International Symposium on the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property with a focus on microbial biodeterioration of cultural property was held in Tokyo, Japan on December 5–7, 2012. In addition to microbial deterioration of stone, paper and wood, available technologies and innovations in removal and protection of cultural property, monitoring fungal contamination and classification of the contamination level, this symposium showed results dealing with cultural property after earthquake and tsunami as the key issues affecting the artifacts and cultural property highlighted at this symposium. Interestingly, it was found that salt in water can control the growth of molds and fungi on documents and less growth was observed when salinity was higher. This has a greater implication when dealing with large amounts of documents after natural disaster. The papers derived from invited speakers and also posters are being published in a dedicated volume of book available to research scientists, conservationists, applied biologists and graduate students working on related subjects.  相似文献

The papers in this issue are from a symposium presented at the 71st Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists held in Buffalo, New York, in April 2002. In the light of recent theoretical and methodological advances and debates in the study of cognition, this symposium addressed questions concerning primate cognitive ecology and decision-making from a variety of perspectives. These include ontogenetic patterns of brain growth and learning, paleoecology and evolution, sensory adaptations, foraging strategies, tool-using behavior, and concepts derived from the study of human cognition, such as schemata, planning, and rehearsal of activities. In this issue, data are presented on New World monkeys, Old World monkeys, apes, and humans. It is argued that the ability to make decisions based on the recognition that tertiary relationships in one context can be used to understand cause-and-effect relationships in an unrelated context may enable nonhuman primates to effectively reduce uncertainty and solve problems in changing social and ecological environments.  相似文献

This special issue of the Journal of Mammalian Evolution represents the proceedings from a symposium held in conjunction with the 9th International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology (ICVM IX, Punta del Este, Uruguay, July 29, 2010), and entitled “Form and Function in the Xenarthra.” This symposium was the third on xenarthran biology to be presented in association with the ICVM meetings. In this brief introduction to the symposium proceedings, we plan to discuss the justification for the symposium, to provide a brief history of previous symposia and their results, and to introduce the contents of the present volume.  相似文献

The symposium on “G6PD Deficiency, Diet, and Adaptation to Malaria” was held in Cortona, Italy on July 3,4,5 1995 under the auspices of the Congress of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES). The Congress had actually taken place in Florence in April 1995, and the G6PD symposium was a satellite session to that meeting. Professor Brunetto Chiarelli, of the Istituto di Antropologia at the University of Florence, was the program chairman for the Congress. The general theme of the Congress was “Biodemography and Human Evolution,” and the G6PD symposium was consistent with this topic. In its broadest sense the symposium focused on biocultural factors which have influenced evolution at the G6PD locus and the pattern of population variation that has consequently emerged in this genetic system. A more specific sub-theme, reflected in the title of the symposium, was the interaction between dietary factors and the G6PD locus in providing antimalarial protection to human populations.  相似文献

Abstract

At the end of a symposium, it is useful to look back, both at the symposium itself and the developments that led up to the symposium. In this spirit, I thought it would be appropriate to tell the story of how I first became interested in purinergic receptors. I am recounting this story not because I believe that my audience has a burning interest in the history of my intellectual development, but rather because it illustrates the power of ideas.  相似文献

A symposium at the FASEB meeting in Las Vegas in May 1988 will be devoted to the role of cofactors (vitamins, coenzymes, prosthetic groups) in and as posttranslational protein modifications; the symposium is part of a thematic focus on metabolic regulation. In planning the symposium, we decided to consider metabolic regulation in its broadest context, which should include both the short-term activity modulations in the life of contemporary organisms and the adaptations of special molecular strategies over evolutionary time. We further decided to focus the symposium context on the involvement of cofactors both as catalytic participants in and as substrates or end products of posttranslational modifications. As a preview of the actual symposium, the present discussion is an attempt to enumerate cases of cofactor involvement in these different categories: 1) essential nutrients as participants in posttranslational modifications; 2) cofactors as donor substrates in reversible, regulatory modifications; and 3) cofactor incorporation or generation as covalent constituents of proteins. The actual symposium topics are taken from category 1: vitamin C and protein hydroxylation (K. I. Karivikkio) and vitamin K and protein carboxylation (J. W. Suttie) and category 3: biotinylation (H. G. Wood), phycobiliproteins (A. Glazer), and pyruvoyl enzymes (W. Dowhan).  相似文献

The sixth symposium in the series "Contemporary Topics in Immunology" was held in New Orleans on June 3, 1990, at the joint meeting of The American Association of Immunologists and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The symposium was sponsored jointly by The American Association of Immunologists, the Clinical Immunology Society, and and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and was titled "The Contributions of Basic Immunology to Human Health." Five speakers, whose research has clear relevance to the treatment and prevention of major human diseases, discussed topics of great current interest: hematopoietic stem cells, cell adhesion and lymphocyte homing; the complexities of autoimmunity and approaches to diverting or depressing autoaggressive immunity; structure and functions of the interferons and the construction of designer and chimeric interferons; the varied functions of transforming growth factors and molecular events that regulate the synthesis of TGF beta; and the roles of cytokines in the expression of human immunodeficiency virus and the prospects for controlling HIV infections by regulating selected cytokines. This symposium will be remembered for the exceptional clarity with which each speaker illustrated how fundamental knowledge in immunology fuels advances in the treatment and prevention of those human disorders that involve the immune system.  相似文献

Yale's Microbial Diversity Institute (MDI) comprises scientists who seek to understand the largely unknown microbial world. In the first MDI symposium at Yale's West Campus in October 2010, four speakers discussed their research in diverse fields within the microbial sciences. The meeting was run concurrently with the "Plant Innate Immunity" symposium organized by Jonathan Jones and Jane Glazebrook. The isolation and characterization of growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) has initiated a new and exciting era in our understanding of the neuroendocrine regulation of pituitary growth hormone (GH) secretion. This report briefly describes the isolation and characterization of GRF, factors which modulate the GH response to GRF and the effects of chronic administration and deprivation of GRF on somatic growth. The intent of this report is to serve as a general introduction on biochemical and physiological aspects of GRF. Synopsis Skates have become a concern in recent years due to the preponderance of these elasmobranchs that are caught as bycatch or as a directed fishery. This has raised concern because skates have life history characteristics that may make them vulnerable to over-exploitation. It was due to this increasing awareness and concern about these batoids that prompted us to organize an international symposium on the “Biology of Skates”. The aims and goals of the symposium were to bring together an international group of researchers to meet, discuss, perhaps develop collaborations, and present their most recent findings. The symposium was held over two days, on 13–14 July, 2006, in conjunction with the 22nd annual meeting of the American Elasmobranch Society in New Orleans, LA. A total of 31 authors from four countries contributed 16 papers that appear in this special issue. The papers are broadly arranged into four separate categories: systematics and biogeography, diet and feeding ecology, reproductive biology, and age and growth. To the best of our knowledge this is the first dedicated book on the biology of skates. We hope that readers will find this issue of interest and that it helps encourage and stimulate future research into these fascinating fishes.  相似文献

In the bicentenary year of Darwin's birth, the American Society of Primatologists honored his memory by convening a symposium entitled "Understanding emotions in primates: In honor of Darwin's 200th birthday." The four articles in this special section, excepting this introduction, derive from that symposium. The section confirms that the topic of emotion is once again, as in Darwin's lifetime, the subject of wide-ranging, theoretically exciting research, and that studies with nonhuman primates are at the leading edge of a rapidly changing field.  相似文献

The seventh symposium in the series "Contemporary Topics in Immunology" was held on April 21, 1991, at the FASEB meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. It was sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, The American Association of Immunologists, and the Clinical Immunology Society. Five topics were discussed by leading researchers in areas of immunology that currently are of exceptional interest and show promise of leading to new advances in the prevention and treatment of human diseases. The topics included: the interactions between immunogenic peptides, class I MHC molecules and T cell receptors; initiation, maintenance, and breakdown of self-tolerance in B lymphocytes; inflammatory disease in HLA-B27 transgenic rats; properties and functions of interleukin-10; and transforming growth factor-beta in reproductive immunology. The exceptional quality of the presentations in this seventh symposium exemplified perfectly the path of basic research that often leads from the laboratory to the clinic.  相似文献

Summary The role of polypeptide growth factors (estromedins) as mediators of estrogen-responsive mammary tumor growth is studied in this report. Three possible new mechanisms were investigated that include endocrine, autocrine, and paracrine related growth factors. The first hypothesis being tested is whether estrogens interact with target tissues and cause the biosynthesis and secretion of polypeptide growth factors, which then act as mitogens for normal and neoplastic mammary tissues. Data presented suggest that this mechanism involves estrogen interaction with uterus, kidney, and pituitary gland causing production of growth factors, which then enter the general circulation and promote growth of distant target tissues. This is an endocrine type mechanism. Another type of estromedin control (autocrine control) may be exerted in an autostimulatory way in which the target tissue produces the polypeptide factors for its own growth in response to estrogen stimulation. A variation of the autocrine mechanism may be a paracrine mechanism in which some cells of an estrogen-responsive normal or neoplastic tissue produce growth factors that act on adjacent or neighboring cells. From the data available, all three possible types of growth factors could be functioning synergistically to yield the final result of continuous estrogen responsive tumor growth in vivo. Summary Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is a copper-transport protein with ferric oxidase activity found in high concentrations in the plasma of all vertebrates. Five cell lines (TR-1, TR-M, TR-ST, TM3, and TM4) derived from the testis can be grown in hormone-supplemented serum-free medium. Cp stimulates the growth of four of these five cell lines in serum-free medium. The growth stimulation by Cp is not affected by the addition or deletion of free copper, nor does copper itself elicit any significant growth response. Cp can stimulate growth also in the absence of TF suggesting that it is not acting solely to promote Fe(III)-TF binding. A strong interaction is seen between Cp and high density lipoprotein (HDL), with the presence of either decreasing the growth-promoting activity of the other. It is suggested that these cell lines may provide an ideal system for studying the action of Cp at the cellular level. 'Trench Connection' was the first international symposium focusing primarily on the hadal zone (depths greater than 6000 m). It was held at the University of Tokyo's Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute in November 2010. The symposium was successful in having attracted an international collective of scientists and engineers to discuss the latest developments in the exploration and understanding of the deepest environments on Earth. The symposium sessions were categorized into three themes: (i) new deep-submergence technology; (ii) trench ecology and evolution; and (iii) the physical environment. Recent technological developments have overcome the challenges of accessing the extreme depths, which have in turn prompted an international renewed interest in researching physical and biological aspects of the hadal ecosystems. This bringing together of international participants from different disciplines led to healthy discussions throughout the symposium, providing potential opportunities and realizations of where the future of unravelling hadal ecology lies. Hadal science is still at relatively rudimentary levels compared with those of shallower marine environments; however, it became apparent at the symposium that it is now an ever-expanding scientific field.  相似文献
