The four species of tsetse used are shown to be aerodynamically rather similar. The wingbeat frequency, aerodynamic lift, flight duration, and number of wingbeats per flight are seen to undergo large increases during adult maturation. Tsetse can produce unusually large aerodynamic lifts, although the flight performance declines very quickly during individual flights. The large lifts appear to be associated with the high percentage of muscle in the fly, and the rapid decline with the inability of the fly to replenish rapidly its proline reserves. Wing mutilation has been shown to increase the wingbeat frequency. The potentiation of the flight performance during maturation appears to be causally linked to increases in the thoracic muscle, cuticle, and proline levels. The results presented here are at variance with those of an earlier study on the physics of flight in tsetse.  相似文献

In traditional deterministic models the conditions for the evolution of sex and sexual behavior are limited because their benefits are context dependent. In novel and adverse environments both multiple mating and recombination can help generate gene combinations that allow for rapid adaptation. Mating frequency often increases in conditions in which recombination might be beneficial; therefore, increased sexual behavior might evolve to act as a cue that stimulates recombination. We conducted two experiments in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, using linked phenotypic markers to determine how recent bouts of additional mating affect female recombination rate. The first experiment examined the effect of additional mating, mating history, and age on female recombination rate. The second experiment assessed the effect of recent mating events on recombination rate. Together, the experiments suggest that each additional bout of mating temporarily increases female recombination rate. These findings imply that the conditions favoring the evolution of sexual reproduction and multiple mating behaviors are broader than currently appreciated.  相似文献

Genetic analysis of Drosophil has provided evidence in support of two proposed evolutionary genetic mechanisms of aging: mutation accumulation and antagonistic pleiotropy. Both mechanisms result from the lack of natural selection acting on old organisms. Analyses of large numbers of flies have revealed that mortality rates do not continue to rise with age as previously thought, but plateau at advanced ages. This phenomenon has implications both for models and for definitions of aging, and may be explained by the evolutionary theories. The physiological processes and genes most relevant to aging are being identified using Drosophila lines selected in the laboratory for postponed senescence. Oxidative stress and insufficient metabolic reserves/capacity may be particularly important factors in limiting the fruitfly lifespan. Genes which exhibit aging-related changes in expression are now being identified. Transgenic flies are being used to analyze the mechanisms of such aging-related gene expression, and to test the effects of specific genes on aging and aging-related deterioration.  相似文献

Summary In tethered flying houseflies (Musca domestica), the yaw torque produced by the wings is accompanied by postural changes of the abdomen and hindlegs. In free flight, these body movements would jointly lead to turning manoeuvres of the animal. By recording the yaw torque together with the lateral deflections of either the abdomen or the hindlegs, it is shown that these motor output systems act in a highly synergistic way during two types of visual orientation behavior, compensatory optomotor turning reactions and orientation turns elicited by moving objects. This high degree of coordination is particularly conspicuous for the pathway activated by moving objects. Here, orientation responses either may be induced or may fail to be generated always simultaneously in all three motor output systems. This suggests that the pathway mediating orientation turns towards objects is gated before it segregates into the respective motor control systems of the wings, the abdomen and the hindlegs.  相似文献

实蝇科昆虫的许多种类是重要的入侵物种, 在国际植物检疫领域具有重要地位。联合国粮农组织(FAO)和《国际植物保护公约(IPPC)》积极倡导国际合作实施对实蝇类害虫的有效控制, 不断完善和出版实蝇控制技术手册并制定相关的国际植物检疫标准。引诱剂和诱捕器是实蝇类害虫监测、调查和防治中最重要的手段之一, 被广泛采用。国际上普遍认可的实蝇诱剂主要包括蛋白质诱剂(PA)、甲基丁香酚(ME)、诱蝇酮(CUE)、乙酸铵诱剂(AA)、乙酸铵盐诱剂(AS)、TML 诱剂、己酸丁酯诱剂(BuH)、吡嗪诱剂(MVP)等, 我国也研发了大量植物型和食物型诱剂。国际上常用实蝇诱捕器有20多种, 依据捕获实蝇的不同方式分为干型诱捕器、湿型诱捕器和干湿综合型诱捕器3类。同时, 我国利用各种塑料瓶研制了多种多样的诱捕器。本文对国际、国内实蝇诱剂和诱捕器等研究和利用情况进行了总结, 提出我国在建设外向型水果非疫区的实蝇监测中应使用国际标准的诱剂和诱捕器, 以便获得国际认可并促进我国优势农产品顺利进入国际市场, 在研发诱剂和诱捕器时做到标准化并及时申请专利保护、推向国际市场以便获得国际有关标准的采用和认可。  相似文献

实蝇是全世界重要的农业害虫,其生殖行为规律对其防治方法的研究具有重要指导意义。本文在文献调研的基础上,对实蝇类昆虫求偶、交配和产卵等行为的最新研究进展进行综述。实蝇类昆虫具有非资源型交配系统,性内、性间选择共同驱动实蝇的性特征进化;同时,实蝇生殖行为受到性信息素、翅信号、物理、化学以及环境等因素的影响。此外,雌虫在交配后会为理想产卵位置发生竞争,而产卵标记信息素起着调节作用。实蝇类昆虫的诸多生殖行为研究结果已成功应用于田间防治,取得了较好的效果。  相似文献

Animals'' behaviour towards odours depends on both odour quality and odour intensity. While neuronal coding of odour quality is fairly well studied, how odour intensity is treated by olfactory systems is less clear. Here we study odour intensity processing at the behavioural level, using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We trained flies by pairing a MEDIUM intensity of an odour with electric shock, and then, at a following test phase, measured flies'' conditioned avoidance of either this previously trained MEDIUM intensity or a LOWer or a HIGHer intensity. With respect to 3-octanol, n-amylacetate and 4-methylcyclohexanol, we found that conditioned avoidance is strongest when training and test intensities match, speaking for intensity-specific memories. With respect to a fourth odour, benzaldehyde, on the other hand, we found no such intensity specificity. These results form the basis for further studies of odour intensity processing at the behavioural, neuronal and molecular level.  相似文献

Fragile X syndrome (FraX) is the most common inherited mental retardation disease. It is caused by mutation of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (fmr1) gene. The FMR1 protein (FMRP) is a widely expressed RNA-binding translational regulator with reportedly hundreds of potential targets. Recent work has focused on putative roles of FMRP in regulating the development and plasticity of neuronal synaptic connections. The newest animal model of FraX, the fruit fly Drosophila, has revealed several novel mechanistic insights into the disease. This review focuses on Drosophila FMRP as (i) a negative regulator of translation via noncoding RNA, including microRNA and adaptor BC1 RNA-mediated silencing mechanisms; (ii) a negative regulator of microtubule cytoskeleton stability; and (iii) a negative regulator of neuronal architectural complexity.  相似文献

Casual observations suggested that female Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann) exploit fruit wounds (including pre-existing oviposition punctures) as oviposition sites. This behaviour was quantified under field conditions in a citrus grove on the Greek island of Chios. Fruit wounds influenced oviposition behaviour in three ways. First, females were more likely to land on oranges (Citrus sinensis) that were artificially wounded than into unwounded control oranges. Second, having landed, females were more likely to attempt oviposition into a wounded orange than into control oranges. Third, females that attempted oviposition into wounded oranges usually did so directly into or very near the wound. The diameter and depth of the wound significantly influenced the tendency for female flies to land on a fruit but not their propensity, having landed, to attempt oviposition in or near the wound. The significance of this behavior in nature and implications for management of the Mediterranean fruit fly are discussed.
Résumé Des observations fortuites nous ont suggéré que C. capitata Weidemann utilise les blessures des fruits, y compris d'anciennes piqûres de ponte, pour déposer ses oeufs. Ce comportement a été quantifié dans une orangeraie de l'île grecque de Chios. Les blessures des fruits influent sur la ponte de 3 façons. D'abord, les femelles atterissent plus fréquemment sur les oranges, Citrus sinensis, artificiellement blessées que sur les fruits intacts. Ensuite, après atterrissage, les femelles tentent plus souvent de pondre sur une orange blessée que sur des oranges intactes. Enfin, les femelles pondent directement dans la blessure ou à proximité. Le diamètre et la profondeur de la blessure influent sur la tendance à l'atterrissage, mais non sur les tentatives de ponte dans la blessure ou près d'elle. La signification de ce comportement dans la nature et ses conséquences sur la lutte contre C. capitata sont discutées.

Already in the 1930s Skinner, Konorskiand colleagues debated the commonalities, differences and interactions among the processes underlying what was then known as “conditioned reflexes type I and II”, but which is today more well-known as classical (Pavlovian) and operant (instrumental) conditioning. Subsequent decades of research have confirmed that the interactions between the various learning systems engaged during operant conditioning are complex and difficult to disentangle. Today, modern neurobiological tools allow us to dissect the biological processes underlying operant conditioning and study their interactions. These processes include initiating spontaneous behavioral variability, world-learning and self-learning. The data suggest that behavioral variability is generated actively by the brain, rather than as a by-product of a complex, noisy input-output system. The function of this variability, in part, is to detect how the environment responds to such actions. World-learning denotes the biological process by which value is assigned to environmental stimuli. Self-learning is the biological process which assigns value to a specific action or movement. In an operant learning situation using visual stimuli for flies, world-learning inhibits self-learning via a prominent neuropil region, the mushroom-bodies. Only extended training can overcome this inhibition and lead to habit formation by engaging the self-learning mechanism. Self-learning transforms spontaneous, flexible actions into stereotyped, habitual responses.  相似文献
