Theoretical investigation of properties of assumed gene networks constructed from elementary units of two types, genetic elements and control links, was carried out. A test was formulated for a subclass of such networks with cyclic structure called S(n,k) networks allowing calculation-free prediction of the network limit properties (the presence/absence and number of stationary and/or cyclic functioning modes) from a graph of the network structure. The paper discusses the possibility of using a mixture of two growth limiting substrates to induce or eliminate self-sustained oscillations in a continuous culture process. The proportion of both substrates in the mixture is treated as a new control variable. The presented approach is based on the assumption that the oscillatory behaviour occurs for selected substrates in some range of dilution rates. Because a double-substrate limitation may occur, the analysis is performed for two fundamental substrate utilization patterns: simultaneous consumption and diauxic growth. By using model simulations and bifurcation analysis, we show that an appropriate proportion of two substrates in the mixture allows for the control of the oscillatory behaviour.  相似文献

The effect of a Paratrichodorus sp. (close to P. tunisiensis) on the growth of wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) was investigated in pots containing different nematode densities and maintained in a growth chamber at 20 C for 40 days. The relation between fresh weight of tops and initial nematode density was according to the equation y = m + (1 - m)zP⁻T. This suggests a tolerance limit of 1.4 nematodes/cm³ of soil under the conditions of the experiment; taking into account the effect of the great nematode mortality, it is estimated to be between 0.15 and 0.35 nematodes/cm³ soil. Models of the growth of the plants and the multiplication of the nematodes (assuming a constant mortality of the nematodes in the absence of roots) which explain the relation between initial and tinal nematodes densities at initial densities greater than 1 nematode/cm³ soil are described in an appendix. Sections of nematode infested roots showed disorganization of root structure clue to abnormal proliferation of lateral roots. Nematode feeding on the root cap and apical meristem caused cessation of root elongation and induced abnormal production of lateral root primordia.  相似文献

A model of a pair of coupled limit cycle oscillators is presented in order to investigate the extent of, and the transition between, 11 and 21 phase entrainment, a phenomenon exhibited by numerous diverse biological systems. The mathematical form of the model involves a flow on a phase torus given by two coupled first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations which govern the oscillators' phase angles (i.e. their respective positions around their limit cycles). The regions corresponding to 11 and 21 phase entrainment in an appropriate parameter space are determined analytically and numerically. The bifurcations occurring during the transition from 11 to 21 phase entrainment are discussed.  相似文献
