Six wheat genotypes were evaluated for heat tolerance in terms of seedling growth, antioxidant response and cell death. Based on the heat susceptibility index (HSI), response of the genotypes varied from heat tolerant (Inqilab-91) to heat sensitive (Sitta) along with moderately tolerant (Nesser and Sarsabz) and sensitive (Fareed and FD-83). Heat stress-induced programmed cell death (probably necrosis) in wheat leaves was evident by DNA smear. MDA content increased above twofold in most of genotypes under heat stress, with the lowest increase in the heat-tolerant genotype Nesser. Catalase activity diminished under heat stress in all genotypes. Peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), protease, and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities increased under heat stress. Apparently, heat stress-induced reduction in catalase activity was compensated by a parallel increase in peroxidases to quench H2O2. Heat stress-induced decrease (%) in catalase and increase in protease activities showed significant positive correlations, whereas increase (%) in APX activity showed a significant negative correlation with HSI or relative heat tolerance of genotypes. All these correlations signify that catalase, protease and ascorbate peroxidase can be used efficiently as biochemical markers to assess the relative heat stress tolerance of wheat genotypes at the seedling stage. In conclusion, using a multiparametric approach involving morphophysiological and biochemical assays, the sensitivity of wheat genotypes to heat stress could be evaluated to a sufficient level of certainty at the seedling stage.  相似文献

Chilling stress during the growing season could cause a series of changes in wucai (Brassica campestris L.). WS-1 (chilling-tolerant genotype) and Ta2 (chilling-sensitive genotype) were sampled in present study to explore the chilling tolerance mechanisms. Our results indicated that photosynthetic parameters exhibited lower level in Ta2 than in WS-1 under chilling stress. The rapid chlorophyll fluorescence dynamics curve showed that chilling resulted in a greater inactivation of photosystem II reaction center in Ta2. Reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde content of chloroplast in Ta2 were higher than WS-1. The ascorbate–glutathione cycle in chloroplast of WS-1 played a more crucial role than Ta2, which was confirmed by higher activities of antioxidant enzymes including Ascorbate peroxidase, Glutathione reductase, Monodehydroascorbate reductase and Dehydroascorbate reductase and higher content of AsA and GSH. In addition, the ultrastructure of chloroplasts in Ta2 was more severely damaged. After low temperature stress, the shape of starch granules in Ta2 changed from elliptical to round and the volume became larger than that of WS-1. The thylakoid structure of Ta2 also became dispersed from the original tight arrangement. Combined with our previous study under heat stress, WS-1 can tolerant both chilling stress and heat stress, which was partly due to a stable photosynthetic system and the higher active antioxidant system in plants, in comparison to Ta2.  相似文献

Heat stress (HS) is the major constraint to crop productivity worldwide. The objective of the present experiment was to select the tolerant and sensitive genotype(s) on the basis of morpho-physiological and biochemical characteristics of ten Vicia faba genotypes. These genotypes were as follows: Zafar 1, Zafar 2, Shebam 1, Makamora, Espan, Giza Blanka, Giza 3, C4, C5 and G853. The experimental work was undertaken to study the effects of different levels of temperature (control, mild, and modest) on plant height (PH) plant−1, fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) plant−1, area leaf−1, content of leaf relative water (RWC), proline content (Pro) and total chlorophyll (Total Chl), electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde level (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes. HS significantly affected growth performance of all genotypes. However, the magnitude of reduction in genotypes ‘C5’ was relatively low, possibly due to its better antioxidant activities (CAT, POD and SOD), and accumulation of Pro and Total Chl, and leaf RWC. In the study, ‘C5’ was noted to be the most HS tolerant and ‘Espan’ most HS sensitive genotypes. It was concluded that the heat-tolerant genotypes may have better osmotic adjustment and protection from free radicals by increasing the accumulation of Pro content with increased activities of antioxidant enzyme.  相似文献

The investigation aimed at determining the effect of nitric oxide on antioxidant defense system of spring maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes namely, LM 11 (stress susceptible) and CML 32 (stress tolerant), that showed differential tolerance towards heat stress. Seed priming with a NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) improved seedling growth and induced varied defense mechanisms, under stress conditions. 75 μM SNP improved seedling lengths and their biomasses. It specifically enhanced catalase (CAT) activity in the roots of stressed seedlings of the two genotypes. However, it could induce CAT activity only in LM 11 shoots, under heat stress. It also enhanced peroxidase (POX) activity in CML 32 roots. However, such induction of POX activity with SNP treatment was not observed in LM 11 roots. This showed that NO increased the H2O2 scavenging efficiency of CML 32 genotype by enhancing the cumulative activation of CAT and POX in its roots. However, it did not induce activation of any of the H2O2 detoxifying enzymes in CML 32 shoots which showed that ascorbate–glutathione cycle remained non-operational in shoots of SNP-treated seedlings of the tolerant genotype, under high temperature stress. With seed priming, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased in both the tissues of LM 11 seedlings. The shoots of SNP primed CML 32 seedlings, however, did not show any effect on SOD activity which illustrated that nitric oxide might act as a direct scavenger of superoxide radicals in CML 32 seedlings. SNP decreased the contents of H2O2 and MDA and increased proline content in seedlings of both the genotypes indicating reduced oxidative damage. The results thus showed that nitric oxide might induce different mechanisms of stress tolerance in these maize genotypes.  相似文献

Limitations in carbohydrate supplies have been implicated as a factor responsible for reproductive failure under heat stress. Heat stress affects two stages of reproductive development in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.], and genotypes are available with tolerance and sensitivity to heat during these different stages. The objectives of this study were to determine the responses of these cowpea lines to ambient and elevated [CO2], under heat stress and optimal temperature, and test whether differences in carbohydrate supplies due to genotypes, CO2 enrichment and heat stress are associated with differences in sensitivity to heat during reproductive development. Plants were grown in reach-in growth chambers and subjected to day/night temperatures of either 33/20 or 33/30°C, and [CO2] levels of either 350 or 700 μmol mol-1. Under intermediate night temperature (33/20°C), all lines set substantial numbers of pods. Under high night temperature (33/30°C) with either ambient or elevated [CO2], one heat-sensitive line produced no flowers and the other set no pods, whereas the heat-tolerant line abundantly set pods. High night temperature reduced the overall carbohydrate content of the plants, especially peduncle sugars, and caused decreases in photosynthetic rates. The high pod set of the heat-tolerant line, under high night temperature, was associated with higher levels of sugars in peduncles compared with the heat-sensitive lines. The heat-tolerant line accumulated substantial shoot biomass, exhibited less accumulation of starch in leaves, and possibly had less down-regulation of photosynthesis in response to CO2 enrichment and heat stress than the heat-sensitive lines. Elevated [CO2] resulted in higher overall carbohydrate levels in heat-sensitive lines (starch in leaves, stems and peduncles), but it did not increase their heat tolerance with respect to flower production or pod set. Heat-induced damage to floral buds and anthers in the sensitive lines was associated with low sugars levels in peduncles, indicating that heat had greater effects on assimilate demand than on leaf assimilate supply. The heat-tolerant line was the most responsive genotype to elevated [CO2] with respect to pod production under either high or intermediate temperatures.  相似文献

Salinity stress is a major factor limiting plant growth and productivity of many crops including oilseed. The present study investigated the identification of salt tolerant mustard genotypes and better understanding the mechanism of salinity tolerance. Salt stresses significantly reduced relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll (Chl) content, K+ and K+ /Na+ ratio, photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and increased the levels of proline (Pro) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) contents, Na+ , superoxide (O2•− ) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in both tolerant and sensitive mustard genotypes. The tolerant genotypes maintained higher Pro and lower MDA content than the salt sensitive genotypes under stress condition. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) were increased with increasing salinity in salt tolerant genotypes, BJ-1603, BARI Sarisha-11 and BARI Sarisha-16, but the activities were unchanged in salt sensitive genotype, BARI Sarisha-14. Besides, the increment of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity was higher in salt sensitive genotype as compared to tolerant ones. However, the activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were increased sharply at stress conditions in tolerant genotypes as compared to sensitive genotype. Higher accumulation of Pro along with improved physiological and biochemical parameters as well as reduced oxidative damage by up-regulation of antioxidant defense system are the mechanisms of salt tolerance in selected mustard genotypes, BJ-1603 and BARI Sarisha-16.  相似文献

  • Climate change is increasing the frequency of high temperature shocks and water shortages, pointing to the need to develop novel tolerant varieties and to understand the mechanisms employed to withstand combined abiotic stresses.
  • Two tomato genotypes, a heat-tolerant Solanum lycopersicum accession (LA3120) and a novel genotype (E42), previously selected as a stable yielding genotype under high temperatures, were exposed to single and combined water and heat stress. Plant functional traits, pollen viability and physiological (leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence emission measurements) and biochemical (antioxidant content and antioxidant enzyme activity) measurements were carried out. A Reduced Representation Sequencing approach allowed exploration of the genetic variability of both genotypes to identify candidate genes that could regulate stress responses.
  • Both abiotic stresses had a severe impact on plant growth parameters and on the reproductive phase of development. Growth parameters and leaf gas exchange measurements revealed that the two genotypes used different physiological strategies to overcome individual and combined stresses, with E42 having a more efficient capacity to utilize the limiting water resources. Activation of antioxidant defence mechanisms seemed to be critical for both genotypes to counteract combined abiotic stresses. Candidate genes were identified that could explain the different physiological responses to stress observed in E42 compared with LA3120.
  • Results here obtained have shown how new tomato genetic resources can be a valuable source of traits for adaptation to combined abiotic stresses and should be used in breeding programmes to improve stress tolerance in commercial varieties.

Plants use various mechanisms to cope with drought constraints at morphological, physiological, and biochemical level by means of different adaptive mechanisms. All organisms use a network of signal transduction pathways to control their metabolism and to adapt to the environment. Among these pathways, calcium (Ca2+) ions play an important role as a universal second messenger. Calcium has unique properties and universal ability to transmit diverse signals that trigger primary physiological actions in the cell in response to hormones, pathogens, and stress factors. Calcium plays a fundamental role in regulating the polar growth of cells and tissues and participates in plant adaptation to various stress factors. This study was conducted to examine the role of Ca2+ in ameliorating the adverse effect of drought stress responses in two contrasting wheat genotypes, HD 2733 (drought sensitive) and HD 2987 (drought tolerant), differing in their drought tolerance. The plants were treated with mannitol or Hoagland solution and then supplemented with CaCl2 (10 mM). Measurements of seed germination, shoot growth, and chlorophyll content showed that calcium treatment increased all these factors in tolerant genotype (HD 2987) under induced stress condition. Drought stress reduced relative water content, osmolyte, and soluble sugar accumulation in both the genotypes, but CaCl2 supplementation increased all the components under stress condition in HD 2987 as compared to HD 2733. The oxidative damage caused by induced stress was lower in HD 2987 compared to HD 2733 genotypes as assessed by their higher photosynthetic capacity and lower electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA) content as well as H2O2 accumulation. Less accumulation of superoxide and H2O2 was also observed in HD 2987 genotype after CaCl2 supplementation combined with mannitol treatment. In addition, the enhanced accumulation of calcium in the HD 2987 genotype is correlated with the higher activities of antioxidant enzymes than HD 2733 genotype under similar stress conditions. Our findings provide evidence of the protective role of exogenous calcium in conferring better tolerance against mannitol-induced drought stress in wheat genotypes, which could be useful as genetic stock to develop wheat tolerant varieties in breeding programs.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a key reactive oxygen species (ROS) in signal transduction pathways leading to activation of plant defenses against biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, we investigated the effects of H2O2 pretreatment on aluminum (Al) induced antioxidant responses in root tips of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes, Yangmai‐5 (Al‐sensitive) and Jian‐864 (Al‐tolerant). Al increased accumulation of H2O2 and O2?? leading to more predominant lipid peroxidation, programmed cell death and root elongation inhibition in Yangmai‐5 than in Jian‐864. However, H2O2 pretreatment alleviated Al‐induced deleterious effects in both genotypes. Under Al stress, H2O2 pretreatment increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase and monodehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase as well as the levels of ascorbate and glutathione more significantly in Yangmai‐5 than in Jian‐864. Furthermore, H2O2 pretreatment also increased the total antioxidant capacity evaluated as the 2, 2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl‐radical scavenging activity and the ferric reducing/antioxidant power more significantly in Yangmai‐5 than in Jian‐864. Therefore, we conclude that H2O2 pretreatment improves wheat Al acclimation during subsequent Al exposure by enhancing the antioxidant defense capacity, which prevents ROS accumulation, and that the enhancement is greater in the Al‐sensitive genotype than in the Al‐tolerant genotype.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of short-term heat stress on morpho-physiological characters and antioxidants in 10 diverse wheat genotypes. Seed were aseptically grown in test tubes containing filter paper whose lower half was dipped in one-fourth MS media. Heat stress conditions were created by exposing the seedlings at 45 °C for 2 h after 7 days of their germination. Measurements were taken after 3 days of treatment. Heat stress significantly reduced the shoot dry mass, root dry mass, shoot length and root length in all the genotypes. The chlorophyll content and membrane stability index decreased, whereas proline content increased in heat-treated plants. There was significant increase in the activity of catalase, guaiacol peroxidase and superoxide dismutase under stress conditions. The genotypic variations were also significant. On the basis of a coordinated simulation of all these parameters, wheat genotypes Raj 4037 and PBW 373 were identified as tolerant to high temperature stress. The study provides evidence that the tolerant genotypes were equipped with better management of physiological processes along with an efficient antioxidative defence system, sensitivity of which can be evaluated to a sufficient level of certainty at seedling stage.  相似文献

Plant responses to elevated CO2 and high temperature are critically regulated through a complex network of phytohormones and redox homeostasis. However, the involvement of abscisic acid (ABA) in plant adaptation to heat stress under elevated CO2 conditions has not been thoroughly studied. This study investigated the interactive effects of elevated CO2 (800 μmol·mol?1) and heat stress (42 °C for 24 h) on the endogenous level of ABA and the cellular redox state of two genotypes of tomato with different ABA biosynthesis capacities. Heat stress significantly decreased maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and leaf water potential, but also increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and electrolyte leakage (EL) in both genotypes. Heat‐induced damage was more severe in the ABA‐deficient mutant notabilis (not) than in its parental cultivar Ailsa Craig (Ailsa), suggesting that a certain level of endogenous ABA is required to minimise the heat‐induced oxidative damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. Irrespective of genotype, the enrichment of CO2 remarkably stimulated Fv/Fm, MDA and EL in heat‐stressed plants towards enhanced tolerance. In addition, elevated CO2 significantly strengthened the antioxidant capacity of heat‐stressed tomato seedlings towards a reduced cellular redox state for a prolonged period, thereby mitigating oxidative stress. However, elevated CO2 and heat stress did not alter the endogenous level of ABA or the expression of its biosynthetic gene NCED2 in either genotype, indicating that ABA is not involved in elevated CO2‐induced heat stress alleviation. The results of this study suggest that elevated CO2 alleviated heat stress through efficient regulation of the cellular redox poise in an ABA‐independent manner in tomato plants.  相似文献

Heat tolerance of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) genotypes was evaluated by solute leakage and chlorophyll fluorescence techniques in heat-hardened and non-hardened plants. To determine the appropriate hardening treatment, 1-month-old plants of two groundnut genotypes, ICGV 86707 and Chico were conditioned at five combinations of hardening (37°C) and non-hardening (30°C) air temperatures over a 5-day period. Heat injury, was assessed through measurements of electrolyte leakage after stressing leaf discs to 55°C for 15 min. The relative injury was significantly influenced by the conditioning temperatures and by the temperature during 24 h prior to measurement if those involved non-hardening conditions. Relative injury and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured after stressing leaves of six genotypes at a range of temperatures between 49°C and 55°C. Significant genotype × hardening treatment interactions were observed in relative injury and chlorophyll fluorescence. Chico was susceptible to heat stress, the relative injury test identified ICGV 86707 as tolerant, and the chlorophyll fluorescence test identified ICGV 86707 as tolerant under hardened conditions and ICGV 87358 as tolerant when non-hardened. When expressed as percentage of control values, the relative injury and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements over the 49–53°C stress temperature range were strongly correlated. Chlorophyll concentrations were increased by hardening in all genotypes except Chico. In Chico, chlb concentration was decreased and the chla/b ratio increased by hardening, and chlorophyll concentrations were correlated with chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. Chlorophyll concentration may therefore provide an alternative means of screening for heat tolerance.  相似文献

Heat stress during the grain-filling period is the main abiotic stress factor limiting grain yield and quality in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In this study, 64 wheat genotypes were exposed to heat stress during reproduction caused by delayed sowing in two growing seasons. Grain yield, 1000 grain weight (GW), grain hardness (GH), and grain-quality related traits were investigated. Heat stress caused a significant decrease in GW through reducing starch content (SC) and a non-compensating rise in protein content (PC), and thereby resulted in lower yield. In addition, significant increases in flour water absorption (WA), Zeleny sedimentation volume (ZT), ash content (AC), lipid content (LC), loaf volume (LV), wet gluten content (WG), dry gluten content (DG), gluten index (GI), and amylopectin content (APC) were found following heat stress. In contrast, decreases in grain moisture content (MC) and amylose content (AMC) induced by heat stress were observed. The heat-tolerant genotypes were superior in grain yield, GW, SC, AMC, and MC. While the sensitive genotypes contained higher PC, LV, GI and AMP. A group of wheat genotypes characterized with a higher yield, AMC, GW, and SC as well as lower PC, WA, GH, ZT, and LV; and was found to be the most heat tolerant by principal component analysis. Lighter weight and smaller grains produce a smaller starchy endosperm with lower quality (less amylose) and higher grain protein content in heat stress compared to normal conditions. Heat stress caused by delayed sowing improves some of the baking-quality related traits.  相似文献

The effects of chilling under low light (9/7 °C, 100 µmol m?2 s?1) on the photosynthetic and antioxidant capacities and subsequent recovery were examined in two (one tolerant and one sensitive) cucumber genotypes. Chilling resulted in an irreversible inhibition of net CO2 assimilation and growth for the sensitive genotype, which was accompanied by decreases in the maximum velocity of RuBP carboxylation by Rubisco (Vcmax), the capacity for ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate regeneration (Jmax), Rubisco content and activity, and the quantum efficiency of photosystem II, in the absence of any stomatal limitation of CO2 supply or inorganic phosphate limitation. In contrast, CO2 assimilation for the tolerant genotype fully recovered after chill. The chill‐induced decrease in the proportion of electron flux for photosynthetic carbon reduction was mostly compensated by an O2‐dependent alternative electron flux driven by the water–water cycle, especially in the sensitive genotype. Compared with the tolerant genotype, the sensitive genotype after chill showed reduced capacity for scavenging reactive oxygen species and increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species. The balance between O2‐dependent alternative electron flux and the capacity for scavenging reactive oxygen species in response to chill plays a major role in determining the tolerance of cucumber leaves to this stress factor. It is concluded that the water–water cycle operates at high rates when CO2 assimilation is restricted in cucumber leaves subjected to chill and low light conditions.  相似文献

As global temperature rise, the threat of heat stress to rapeseed production is becoming more obvious. Exploring the response characteristics of two important biological pathways, oil accumulation and photosynthesis, to heat stress during B. napus seed filling is helpful in the genetic improvement of heat-tolerant rapeseed. The effects of heat stress on seed oil accumulation and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics of 29 B. napus germplasms with different oil content and environmental sensitivity, including 6 rapeseed varieties which exhibited environment-sensitive/insensitive and with high, medium or low oil content, were tested by whole plant heat stress or the in vitro silique culture system. Both assay exhibited similar trend on oil content of the rapeseed germplasms. The heat effect on the chlorophyll fluorescence kinetic parameters Fv/Fm, ETR and Y(II) were also consistent. Heat stress significantly decreased oil content, although there was abundant genetic variation on heat tolerance among the genotypes. Correlation analysis showed that the decrease rate of Fv/Fm of silique heat-stressed B. napus developing seed was positive correlative to the decrease rate of mature seed oil content of the whole plant heat-stressed rapeseed (R = 0.9214, P-value < 0.01). Overall, the results indicated that heat stress inhibited oil accumulation and photosynthesis in B. napus developing seed. The decrease rate of chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm of heat-stressed developing seed could be used as the index of heat tolerant rapeseed identification. Further, two heat insensitive rapeseed varieties with high oil content were identified.  相似文献

To analyse nodular expression of antioxidant enzymes depending on plant genotype and salinity, two Phaseolus vulgaris genotypes, tolerant BAT477 and sensitive COCOT, were inoculated with the reference strain Rhizobium tropici CIAT899 and grown under 25 and 50 mM NaCl. Plant growth, nodulation and nitrogen fixing activity measured by the acetylene reducing activity (ARA) as an indicator of nitrogenase (E.C. 1.7.9.92) activity were more affected by salt concentrations in COCOT than in BAT477, particularly with 50 mM NaCl. Electrophoresis analysis of antioxidant enzymes in nodules, roots and free-living rhizobia showed that only catalase (CAT E.C. 1.11.1.6) isoenzymes varied with genotype. The sensitive genotype showed lower antioxidant enzyme activities than tolerant genotype and it was more affected by salinity. In the tolerant genotype catalase and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, E.C. 1.11.1.11) were inhibited by salt stress, whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD, E.C. 1.15.1.1) and peroxidase (POX, E.C. 1.11.1.7) were activated by salinity. Statistical analysis allowed suggesting that tolerance to salinity is associated with a differential regulation of distinct superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with three wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes C 306, HD 2285 and HD 2329 (differently susceptible to water and temperature stress) to study the extent of oxidative injury and activities of antioxidant enzymes in relation to heat stress induced by manipulating dates of sowing. Increase in temperature by late sowing significantly decreased leaf relative water content (RWC), ascorbic acid content, and increased H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation in all the genotypes at 8 and 23 d after anthesis. Temperature tolerant genotypes C 306, closely followed by HD 2285 were superior to HD 2329 in maintaining high RWC, ascorbic acid content, and lower H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde content) under high temperature (late sowing) at the two stages. Activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were highest in HD 2285 followed by C 306 and minimum in HD 2329 while ascorbate peroxidase activity was highest in C 306.  相似文献

Four putative heat-tolerant tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) cultivars (Tamasabro, Heat Wave, LHT-24, and Solar Set) and one putative heat-sensitive tomato culti-var (Floradade) were grown in the field under non-stress (average daily temperature of 26°C) and heat-stress (average daily temperature of 34°C) conditions. At anthesis, approximately five weeks after being transplanted to the field, leaf samples were collected for antioxidant analyses. Yield was determined by harvesting ripe fruit seven weeks after the collection of leaf samples. Heat stress resulted in a 79.1% decrease in yield for the heat-sensitive Floradade, while the fruit yield in the heat-tolerant cultivars Heat Wave, LHT-24, Solar Set, and Tamasabro was reduced 51.5%, 22.1%, 43.8%, and 34.8% respectively. When grown under heat stress, antioxidant activities were also greater in the heat-tolerant cultivars. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased up to 9-fold in the heat-tolerant cultivars but decreased 83.1% in the heat-sensitive Floradade. Catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase activity increased significantly in all cultivars. Only Heat Wave showed a significant increase in glutathione reductase in response to heat stress but all heat-tolerant cultivars exhibited significantly lower oxidized ascorbate/reduced ascorbate ratios, greater reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratios, and greater a-tocopherol concentrations compared to the heat-sensitive cultivar Floridade. These data indicate that the more heat-tolerant cultivars had an enhanced capacity for scavenging active oxygen species and a more active ascorbate-glutathione cycle and suggest a strong correlation between the ability to up-regulate the antioxidant defense system and the ability of tomatoes to produce greater yields when grown under heat stress.  相似文献
