The anaerobic treatment of baker's yeast wastewater was studied using an anaerobic biological contact reactor (AnRBC) and a fixed-film reactor. The AnRBC had an active biomass developed within the reactor before this study commenced; however, the fixed-film reactor was started without attached biomass in a support structure. The gas production rates obtained for the AnRBC were between 0·55 and 0·61 litre methane per litre reactor per day. However, a gas production rate of only 0·46 litre methane per litre reactor per day was achieved after a four-month operating period for the fixed-film reactor. Higher chemical oxygen demand reduction was also found in the AnRBC. The results indicated that the presence of high sulfate concentration in baker's yeast wastewater affected teh start-up process. The reactor with fully developed active biomass was less susceptible to sulfate inhibition and showed improved anaerobic digestion. Results indicate that the reactor should be innoculated by feeding nutrient-balanced substrate before it was subjected to the digestion of baker's yeast wastewater. The fixed-film reactor was also fed with the substrate contianing sodium molybdate, an inhibitor of sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results indicated that both methanogenic and sulfate-reducing bacteria were inhibited.  相似文献

Two selected sites in the Riyadh metropolitan area were surveyed for the presence of human pathogenic parasites in treated municipal wastewater (TMWW). A total of 100 samples were collected from both sites at two different seasons, the winter and summer reason. The most common parasites seen were the larvae and adult of Strongyloides sp. There were few Ascaris lumbricoides ova, some of which were embryonated and possibly infective, while the highest frequency of Ascaris ova (100 +/litre) was found at site 2 h, the highest frequency of Strongyloides sp. larvae (36-72/litre) and Strongyloides sp. adult (100 +/litre) were found at sites 2 W and 1 W respectively. The variation between sites and seasonal fluctuations showed a significant difference in parasite per litre. High atmospheric temperatures in the Riyadh area seem to be lethal to most intestinal pathogens similarly the absence of protozoal cysts in the TMWW could be attributed to certain treatment processes and other environmental factors. Data obtained from this study will be valuable in planning for the control of parasitic diseases in particular and public health pathogens in general.  相似文献

The effects of irrigation, four fertiliser rates, fungicide, insecticide + molluscicide, and nematicide treatments were tested on an Italian ryegrass sward sown in May 1983, in a multi-factorial experiment that allowed treatment interactions to be examined. Pests and fungal diseases were monitored over a 2-yr period. No recognised grassland insect pests or slugs were found in the seedbed but there were an estimated 17 300 plant parasitic nematodes/litre soil. Other, non-pest invertebrate populations, e.g. earthworms, were not assessed. In the first year yields were increased most by irrigation. There were also large yield responses to fertiliser over the range 50–900 kg N/ha/yr. Responses to pesticide application were relatively small. However, there were significant yield responses in the first year to nematicide and to insecticide + molluscicide treatments. Yields in the second year were affected more by increased fertiliser use than by irrigation; increases after pesticide use were similar to the previous year, and there was also a small but significant yield gain over untreated plots at the second harvest from those treated with fungicide. Interactions between main factors occurred in both years, affecting yields and nematode abundance. Nematode numbers were decreased in both years where the larger, compared to the smaller fertiliser applications had been made. In the first year these differences were only apparent on irrigated plots. It was concluded that, in this trial, irrigation had the greatest effect on yields of spring-sown ryegrass during its establishment year but that increasing fertiliser rates had a greater effect the year after; that fungi had had little effect on ryegrass yields, and that nematodes were more important pests than insects during establishment but insects were more important subsequently.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that competitive interactions among herbivores are mostly indirect and mediated by plant responses to herbivory. Most studies, however, emphasize chewing insects and secondary chemistry, thus ignoring the diverse group of vascular-parasites that may be more likely to compete through induced changes in phytonutrients. Using an aboveground phloem-feeding aphid (Myzus persicae) and a belowground gall-forming nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) on tobacco plants, we assessed the importance of competition via induced host–plant sinks. In a series of experimental trials, nematode root herbivory caused 55 and 72% declines in the growth and fecundity of aphids, respectively. Aphids, on the other hand, did not impact nematode performance. Therefore, we predicted that nematodes out-compete M. persicae by attenuating the magnitude of aphid-induced sinks. Through a combination of invertase enzyme measurements and stable isotope (13C and 15N) enrichment, we found evidence that both herbivores act as mobilizing sinks. Aphids attracted photoassimilates to feeding aggregations on leaves and nematode galls accumulated resources in the roots. Levels of invertase enzymes, for example, were more than fourfold higher in nematode galls than in surrounding root tissue. Yet we found no evidence supporting a sink competition model for aphid–nematode interactions. The strength of aphid-induced leaf sinks was entirely unaffected by nematode presence, and vice versa. Thus, induced host–plant sinks appear to be a common strategy employed by vascular parasites to manipulate the physiology of their host, but multi-sink competition may be limited to herbivores that co-occur on the same tissue type and/or plants under growth-limited abiotic conditions.  相似文献

Yield-loss models were developed for tobacco infected with Meloidogyne incognita grown in microplots under various irrigation regimes. The rate of relative yield loss per initial nematode density (Pi), where relative yield is a proportion of the value of the harvested leaves in uninfected plants with the same irrigation treatment, was greater under conditions of water stress or with high irrigation than at an intermediate level of soil moisture. The maximum rate of plant growth per degree-day (base 10 C) was reduced as nematode Pi increased when plots contained adequate water. When plants were under water stress, increasing Pi did not luther reduce the maximum rate of plant growth (water stress was the limiting factor). Cumulative soil matric potential values were calculated to describe the relationship between available water in the soil (matric potential) due to the irrigation treatments and subsequent plant growth.  相似文献

The effect of raw city wastewater irrigation on biodiversity and population densities of a cycloheximide-resistant (CH) fungal community was studied in 13 field soils receiving either raw city wastewater or normal irrigation, and in raw city wastewater in the Nablus area, using the hair baiting technique (HBT) and a surface soil dilution plating (SSDP) technique. Three of these fields [one had been receiving raw city wastewater for more than ten years and was designated a heavily polluted field, and the other 2 were cultivated for the first time and were either irrigated with raw city wastewater (newly polluted field) or normal irrigation water (nonpolluted)], were sampled 4–7 times over a 9-month period. The other ten fields, which had been under raw city wastewater irrigation for more than 10 years, were sampled only once. Fifty-seven CH-resistant species belonging to 18 genera were recovered, of which 49 species were recovered from soil habitats and 28 species from raw city wastewater. The HBT had shown to be more efficient in the isolation of pathogenic and potentially pathogenic fungi including dermatophytes. A higher percentage of this group of fungi was recovered from the three main field soils studied using HBT (70% of all isolates), than the SSDP (35.5%); no dermatophytes were recovered by the SSDP method. Two dermatophytes (Microsporum gypseum, and Trichophyton ajelloi), and five more fungi (Arthroderma cuniculi, A. curreyi, Chrysosporium keratinophilum, C. tropicum, and C. pannorum), were recovered from these habitats. Wastewater irrigation seemed to have affected the fungal population densities, with the highest population densities being found in the heavily polluted field soil, while lower population densities were found in the nonpolluted field soil. Increases in organic matter were also observed as a result of sewage effluent irrigation. However, basic similarities in the biodiversity of CH-resistant fungal communities existed in nonpolluted and polluted field soils, and raw city wastewater. Comparable numbers of fungal species were recovered from the three main field soils. The species most commonly found in those habitats included: Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus candidus, Geotrichum candidum, and Paecilomyces lilacinus. Field soils receiving either raw city wastewater or normal irrigation water, were found to be rich in pathogenic and potentially pathogenic CH-resistant fungi, including dermatophytes, with raw city wastewater yielding the highest percentage (81%), followed by the newly wastewater irrigated field (77.7%), the nonpolluted field (67%), and the heavily polluted field (63.4%). Hygienic measures should therefore be taken to control the spread of these fungi in the environment of human communities, and to avoid mycotic infections among farmers. 以井水灌溉为对照 (CK),采用盆栽试验研究了矿井废水灌溉对小麦生理特性和重金属积累的影响.设置了3个矿区废水灌溉处理:洗煤废水(T1)、经沉淀处理的洗煤废水 (T2) 和煤矸石淋溶水 (T3),于返青期开始进行矿区废水灌溉处理.结果表明: 矿井废水灌溉处理对小麦的生长发育和产量均有不同程度的负面影响.到开花期时,T1、T2和T3处理小麦的单茎质量和叶面积、根系活力和光合速率均显著低于对照(P<0.05),T3处理小麦株高和叶绿素含量(SPAD值)显著降低(P<0.05);T1、T2和T3处理的籽粒产量分别比对照下降15.4%、9.8%和17.8%.此外,矿井废水灌溉处理小麦籽粒中Cr、Pb、Cu和Zn的含量均显著高于对照,表明矿井废水灌溉导致重金属在小麦籽粒中积累.

The relationship between bacterial concentrations in wastewater used for spray irrigation and in the air was examined. Aerosolized coliforms were detected when their concentration was 10(3)/ml or more in the wastewater. Relative humidity and solar irradiation appeared to affect viable bacteria in the air; a positive correlation was found between relative humidity and the number of aerosolized bacteria. The correlation between solar irradiation and bacterial level, on the other hand, was negative. During night irrigation, up to 10 times more aerosolized bacteria were detected than with day irrigation. Wind velocity did not play an important role in the survival of aerosolized bacteria. Echovirus 7 was isolated in 4 out of 12 air samples collected 40 m downwind from the sprinkler.  相似文献

Growth and survival of sea bream, Archosargus rhomboidalis (L.) larvae were affected by both abundance of eggs that were initially stocked in 75 1 rearing systems and by the concentration of copepod nauplii and copepodites that were fed to larvae. Stocking levels were 2, 4, 8,16 or 32 per litre while food abundance was maintained at approximately 100, 500, 1500 or 3000 per litre. Experiments were of 16 days duration at 26° C. Survival was best, often exceeding 60%, when food levels were 1500 or 3000 per litre and when stocking density did not exceed 8 eggs per litre. Growth was best at the lowest stocking densities and highest food levels. The highest total yields in wet weight occurred at 8 per litre stock density and 3000 per litre food level. Mean wet weight per survivor and yield per stocked egg were greatest at the lowest stocking densities and highest food levels. A 500 per litre food level was marginal for growth and survival, and 100 per litre produced significant survival only at the 2 per litre stocking density. Two experiments at 6000 and 10 000 per litre food levels at 4 per litre stock density gave the best observed growth, and survival as good as in any other experiments. Possible relations between sea bream larvae and their food supply in the natural environment are discussed. Results also are discussed in terms of their possible contribution to aquaculture efforts.  相似文献

The low steady-state basic respiration of iris bulbs (Iris bollandica cv.‘Wedgwood') at 30°C can be enhanced by ethylene. When ethylene is administered continuously a lag period of 4 hours is followed by an increase in the rate of respiration showing two peaks, one after 24 hours and the other after 3 to 4 days. Thereafter, the respiration rate decreases gradually, notwithstanding the presence of ethylene. Concentrations of less than 0.05 microlitre ethylene per litre have no effect, and the maximum effect is observed at concentrations of 3 microlitre per litre and higher. Between 0.2 and 2 microlitre ethylene per litre the peak values of the first maximum are linearly proportional to the logarithm of the ethylene concentration applied. The characteristics of the respiratory response in iris bulbs are probably similar to those described for potato tubers and non-climacteric fruits.  相似文献

尽管国内外对养殖污水处理已提出了一系列的工艺技术,但因经济原因养殖污水直接灌溉农田在我国农村地区仍较为常见.为了解长期畜禽养殖污水直灌对稻田土壤质量的影响,在浙江省绍兴市柯桥区选择了养殖污水直灌不同年限(0、4、7、13年)的稻田,比较研究了养殖污水直接灌溉对稻田土壤不同深度土层中各形态氮和磷含量的影响,探讨了长期养殖污水灌溉对氮、磷在土壤剖面中垂直迁移的影响.结果表明: 长期养殖污水直接灌溉可显著提高稻田土壤中氮和磷的积累,积累量随灌溉年限的增长而增加,其中磷素的增幅高于氮素.养殖污水灌溉4、7和13年后,土壤表层中全P和全N分别比对照增加了43.6%、95.2%、1484%和7.7%、17.0%、28.4%.土壤氮素的变化为NH4+-N、NO3--N>酸解有机氮>非酸解有机氮;土壤有效磷的变化明显大于全磷.长期养殖污水灌溉可促进氮、磷在土壤剖面中的垂直迁移,增加对地下水的污染风险.

Wireworms (Agriotes spp.) are sporadic but increasingly important pests of potatoes, sugar beet and cereals. Whilst effective chemical control is possible, the granular organophosphates normally require high rates of application and the seed dressings containing lindane (gamma‐HCH) have been withdrawn from use. The soil fumigant 1,3‐dichloropropene (1,3‐D as Telone II) and the granular nematicide fosthiazate (Nemathorin 10G) are currently used for the control of potato cyst nematodes. We investigated the effects of both of these chemicals on wireworms. Air‐vapour phase toxicities for 1,3‐D against wireworm were LD50 2.74 mg.litre.day and LD99 5.05 mg.litre.day. The in vitro soil phase toxicity was LD99 8.15 mg.litre.day. 1,3‐D soil phase activity against wireworm may be associated more with air‐vapour phase than a soil‐water phase activity. In glasshouse experiments 16.0 mg.litre.day of 1,3‐D gave 75% control. Fosthiazate, which is applied at approximately 2 μg g?1 of soil for potato cyst nematode control, achieved an LC50 at 3.20 μg g?1. In both in vitro and glasshouse studies 1,3‐dichloropropene showed high toxicity to wireworm at dosages below the current commercial application rate for potato cyst nematode control and fosthiazate also showed useful efficacy. These chemicals may therefore prove to be valuable additional tools for limiting initial wireworm plant damage or reducing wireworm populations.  相似文献

For the first time rickettsia-like micro-organisms are illustrated infecting most tissues of second-stage juveniles of Globoderu rostochiensis . They were seen only inside host cells, except for the few degenerating forms in the intestinal lumen. They were most common in the non-contractile (sarcoplasmic) region of body wall muscles. A study of the oesophageal glands of the nematode suggested that micro-organisms present within these glands would be unlikely to pass out of them and that the nematode would not act as a vector of these micro-organisms to its host plants. No micro-organisms were found in the genital primordia of the nematodes. Stored, hatched juveniles appeared to contain more microorganisms than newly hatched juveniles, indicating an increase in the intensity of the infection subsequent to hatching. No obvious signs of pathogenicity were observed in the nematodes. Uninfected juveniles apparently live longer than infected ones in viro , probably because infected juveniles exhaust their lipid reserves sooner than uninfected juveniles. The possible effect of the micro-organisms on their nematode hosts and their potential as biological control agents are discussed.  相似文献

Most of the mucosal epithelium in the anterior small intestine of B10A mice infected with Trichinella spiralis showed no cytopathology. However, isolated foci of damaged cells or dense masses of multinucleate cytoplasm were seen in the crypt-villus junction, or the base of the villi. Cells occupied by the nematode ranged from a nearly normal appearance, showing only compressed nuclei and organelles, to progressive inflation and vesiculation of endoplasmic reticulum, loss of terminal web and hence disoriented and reduced microvilli, and pycnosis of nuclei. Damaged cells and multinucleate cytoplasmic masses may be derived from the cells previously occupied by the nematode that were linked together by fusion of their lateral cell membranes. Damaged cells and multinucleate masses are apparently sloughed from the epithelium at the villus base without migrating up the villi. Eosinophils were seen in the lamina propria, in the mucosal epithelium (usually associated with damaged cells) and in the intestinal lumen (also with damaged cells). As no eosinophils were seen in contact with the nematode, their activities may be related more to the cells killed by the worm than to the worm itself.  相似文献

It is well established that dietary protein supply can influence the peri-parturient breakdown of immunity to nematode parasites but there is no information on the importance of exposure to nematode larvae during pregnancy for this response. We investigated this by exposing housed pregnant sheep, scanned as carrying two lambs, to a vaccinating infection with a trickle mixed infection of Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae (L3) or to no infection during weeks − 9 to − 4 relative to parturition. At the beginning of week − 3 all sheep were treated with anthelmintic to remove any vaccinating worm burden and from week − 2 to week +6 received a trickle challenge infection with the same nematodes. Within each vaccinating treatment there were two nutritional treatments (no. = 20 per subgroup) designed to provide 1.5 or 1.0 and 1.3 or 0.8 of metabolisable protein (MP) requirement during pregnancy and lactation, respectively. Five ewes were necropsied during weeks +1 and +3 to measure worm burdens and mucosal inflammatory cells and the remainder maintained until week +6. Serum levels of total, IgA and IgE antibodies against L3 antigen of each nematode were measured.Scanning errors and lamb losses resulted in some ewes carrying and/or rearing only one lamb. Numbers of lambs reared was therefore introduced as a treatment effect. Vaccinating infection delayed the peri-parturient rise in faecal egg count (FEC) by an average of 2 weeks but its effect on FEC during the first 6 weeks of lactation was smaller and less persistent than that of dietary MP supply and single- v. twin-suckling.Populations of both nematodes were lower in association with high MP supply, vaccination and single suckling. These changes were associated with increases in numbers of mucosal mast cells (MMC) as a result of both increased MP supply and vaccination. Evidence for a more rapid return of host ability to limit populations of the abdominal nematode T. circumcincta than of the intestinal nematode T. colubriformis was associated with fewer eosinophils and more globule leucocytes (GL) in abomasal than in intestinal tissue.None of the serum antibody isotypes was affected by dietary protein supply. Total and IgA antibodies were maintained by a current larval (vaccinating) intake. IgA titres, however, increased progressively during pregnancy, especially in twin-bearing ewes. IgE titres appeared to be sensitive primarily to the reproductive cycle itself, peaking around parturition.This work supports the conclusion that availability of MP supply influences the recruitment and activity of cells of the immune armoury of the gastro-intestinal tract to nematode parasites. Intestinal nematode infections have been associated with many physical and mental developmental insults. These include anaemia, wasting, stunting, cognitive impairment and lowered educational achievement, all of which have in turn been shown to interfere with productivity and wage-earning capacity in adults. Although there is no direct evidence for an effect of intestinal nematodes on productivity, circumstantial evidence suggests such an effect. Here, Helen Guyatt reviews the indirect evidence for an effect of intestinal nematodes on productivity in adults through current infection and associated morbidity, and on early ill-health in children, which might affect productivity later in life.  相似文献

The Na+ content of erythrocytes is elevated in people with essential hypertension. There is conflicting evidence about its cause. The present study was designed to investigate whether the increase in content is due to a defect in a ouabain-resistant Na+ flux. Net Na+ influx was determined from the increase in Na+ content of erythrocytes during incubation in the presence of ouabain. Na+ content of erythrocytes from 24 normotensive Caucasian subjects with no known family history of hypertension was 6.9 +/- 1.3 mmol per litre of cells. It was 7.9 +/- 2.0 mmol per litre of cells in 18 subjects with essential hypertension. The difference was less and not significant when the two non-Caucasian subjects of the hypertensive group were excluded. Net Na+ influx was 1.83 mmol/h per litre of cells in the normotensive group. In eight subjects it was measured on a second occasion after an interval of several months. The coefficient of a variation of the duplicate tests was 2.4%. Net Na+ influx was significantly higher in the hypertensive group, the value was 2.18 +/- 0.15 mmol/h per litre of cells. In 11 of these subjects, Na+ influx was measured on a second occasion. The coefficient of variation was 6.2%, significantly greater than in the control group. In some of these subjects Na+ influx was within the normal range on one of the two occasions. When the groups were compared with use of the mean values from the duplicate tests, net Na+ influx was elevated in 17 of the 18 hypertensive subjects. The findings are discussed with reference to previous work and in relation to the established facilitatory effects of an increased intracellular Na+ concentration on excitable cells that influence blood pressure.  相似文献

Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) may be a potentially important source of bio-based energy in the southern US due to its vast acreage. It is often produced as part of a waste management plan with varying nutrient composition and energy characteristics on fields irrigated with livestock wastewater. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of subsurface drip irrigation with treated swine wastewater on both the quantity and quality of bermudagrass bioenergy. The treated wastewater was recycled from an advanced treatment system and used for irrigation of bermudagrass in two crop seasons. The experiment had nine water and drip line spacing treatments arrayed in a randomized complete block-design with four replicates. The bermudagrass was analyzed for calorific and mineral contents. Bermudagrass energy yields for 2004 and 2005 ranged from 127.4 to 251.4 MJ ha−1. Compared to irrigation with commercial nitrogen fertilizer, the least biomass energy density was associated with bermudagrass receiving treated swine wastewater. Yet, in 2004 the wastewater irrigated bermudagrass had greater hay yields leading to greater energy yield per ha. This decrease in energy density of wastewater irrigated bermudagrass was associated with increased concentrations of K, Ca, and Na. After thermal conversion, these compounds are known to remain in the ash portion thereby decreasing the energy density. Nonetheless, the loss of energy density using treated effluent via SDI may be offset by the positive influence of these three elements for their catalytic properties in downstream thermal conversion processes such as promoting a lesser char yield and greater combustible gas formation.  相似文献

3-O-Methyl-D-glucose transport across the plasma membrane of isolated rat hepatocytes was followed for net entry of the sugar into sugar-free cells (zero trans entry), net exit of sugar into sugar-free medium (zero trans exit) and for unidirectional entry and exit fluxes when cells had been equilibrated with sugar in the extracellular medium (equilibrium exchange entry and exit). These measurements were performed at 20 degrees C and pH 7.4 by the use of simple manual methods. Initial rates of transport showed a Michaelis--Menten dependency on the sugar concentration at the cis side of the membrane over the range of concentrations tested (100 microM to 100 mM). Transport was found to be symmetrical with no evidence of substrate stimulation of transport from the trans side of the membrane. Parameters (mean values +/- S.E.M.) of transport were estimated as Vmax. 86.2 +/- 9.7 mmol/litre of cell water per min and Km 18.1 +/- 5.9 mM for exchange entry, Vmax. 78.8 +/- 5.3 mmol/litre of cell water per min and Km 17.6 +/- 3.5 mM for exchange exit, Vmax. 84.1 +/- 8.4 mmol/litre of cell water per min and Km 16.8 +/- 4.6 mM for zero trans exit.  相似文献
