A survey of the biochemical constituents of 11 species of Vigna indicates the absence of the non-protein amino acid canavanine in their seeds, and absence of proanthocyanidin (polyphenol) in their leaves. Proanthocyanidin was found in the seeds of all, except Vigna subterranea. The constitutive leaf flavonoids of four genotypes of the pantropic V. subterranea were also studied and compared with those from three other cultivated species. The flavonoid kaempferol seems to be most prevalent as it was found in all of the four cultivated species and genotypes. The glycoside kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside was found present in the four genotypes of V. subterranea and other cultivated Vigna species. However, the flavonoid kaempferol-3-O-glucoside-7-rhamnoside is restricted to V. subterranea. This study questions the inclusion of V. subterranea in the genus Vigna on account of absence of seed proanthocyanidin and restricted accumulation of kaempferol-3-O-glucoside-7-rhamnoside in the leaves.  相似文献

The productivity and morphology of fruit and seeds were studied in 30 species (and subspecies) of the tribe Genisteae (Fabaceae) in south-west Spain. The morphological characters of greatest taxonomic value both for the segregation of the two subtribes (Genistinae and Lupininae) recognized in Genisteae and for the delimitation of the lower taxonomic levels (genus and species) are the size of the pod and characters of the pericarp, the colour and weight of the seeds, whether or not an ad exists, and the shape, size, and position of the hilum. In contrast, characters of little taxonomic interest are pod colour, shape and number of seeds, and characters of the lens. There were also found to be major relationships between fruit and seed, and between these and other floral (e.g. corolla size) or reproductive (e.g. polledovule [P/O] and seed/ovule [S/O] ratios) attributes. Thus in this tribe, pod size was positively correlated with corolla size, seed size, the number of viable seeddfruit, and the S/O and P/O ratios. Corolla size was positively correlated with the number of viable seeds/ fruit and with the seed weight. Similarly, the number of seeddfruit was positively correlated with the fruit's weight and with the number of ovules/ovary. Also, the weight of the seeds was positively correlated with the pollen/ovule ratio. There was also positive correlation between the S/O and P/O ratios.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Suaeda aralocaspica is a C4 summer annual halophyte without Kranz anatomy that is restricted to the deserts of central Asia. It produces two distinct types of seeds that differ in colour, shape and size. The primary aims of the present study were to compare the dormancy and germination characteristics of dimorphic seeds of S. aralocaspica and to develop a conceptual model of their dynamics.

Methods

Temperatures simulating those in the natural habitat of S. aralocaspica were used to test for primary dormancy and germination behaviour of fresh brown and black seeds. The effects of cold stratification, gibberellic acid, seed coat scarification, seed coat removal and dry storage on dormancy breaking were tested in black seeds. Germination percentage and recovery responses of brown seeds, non-treated black seeds and 8-week cold-stratified black seeds to salt stress were tested.

Key Results

Brown seeds were non-dormant, whereas black seeds had non-deep Type 2 physiological dormancy (PD). Germination percentage and rate of germination of brown seeds and of variously pretreated black seeds were significantly higher than those of non-pretreated black seeds. Exposure of seeds to various salinities had significant effects on germination, germination recovery and induction into secondary dormancy. A conceptual model is presented that ties these results together and puts them into an ecological context.

Conclusions

The two seed morphs of S. aralocaspica exhibit distinct differences in dormancy and germination characteristics. Suaeda aralocaspica is the first cold desert halophyte for which non-deep Type 2 PD has been documented.Key words: Borszczowia, cold desert halophyte, physiological seed dormancy, seed germination, Suaeda  相似文献

The present investigation explores the variability of Bunium persicum populations belonging to different regions. Variability among 74 genotypes for thirty-seven traits (29 quantitative and 8 qualitative) were studied to ascertain the population structure of the Bunium persicum. Among the agro-morphological traits, wide range of variability was recorded in tuber shape, tuber colour, seed shape, seed colour, growth habit, leaf shape, leaf colour, umbel shape, umbel colour, plant height (22.90–96.52 cm), primary branches plant−1 (1–6), umbel diameter of primary umbel (6.17 – 13.67 cm), number of primary umbels plant−1 (1–12), umbels plant−1 (8–40), seed yield per plant (0.55–13.10 g), essential oil content (3.2–9.3 %) etc. Significant and positive association was observed between number of seeds primary-1 umbel (r = 0.91), plant height (r = 0.65), number of seeds primary-1 umbel (0.52), number of seeds primary-1 umbel (0.43), number of seeds secondary-1 umbel (0.38) with number of umblets secondary-1 umbel. Cluster analysis classified the genotypes with different geographical origin into two major clusters and sub-clusters. Cluster-I comprises of 50 genotypes and cluster - II of 24 genotypes while the genotype SRS-KZ-189 from Kargil population was separated as an individual sub-group. Principal component (PC1) and (PC2) harbors accounted 20.2% and 14% of total variation. Variability of Kalazeera genotypes would facilitate the plant breeders to implement and design various crop improvement programme in future.  相似文献

Introduction

In plant metabolomics, metabolite contents are often normalized by sample weight. However, accurate weighing of very small samples, such as individual Arabidopsis thaliana seeds (approximately 20 µg), is difficult, which may lead to irreproducible results.

Objectives

We aimed to establish alternative normalization methods for seed-grain-based comparative metabolomics of A. thaliana.

Methods

Arabidopsis thaliana seeds were assumed to have a prolate spheroid shape. Using a microscope image of each seed, the lengths of major and minor axes were measured by fitting a projected 2-dimensional shape of each seed as an ellipse. Metabolic profiles of individual diploid or tetraploid A. thaliana seeds were measured by our highly sensitive protocol (“widely targeted metabolomics”) that uses liquid chromatography coupled with tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry. Mass spectrometric analysis of 1 µL of solution extract identified more than 100 metabolites. The data were normalized by various seed-size measures, including seed volume (single-grain-based analysis). For comparison, metabolites were extracted from 4 mg of diploid and tetraploid A. thaliana seeds and their metabolic profiles were analyzed by normalization of weight (weight-based analysis).

Results

A small number of metabolites showed statistically significant differences in the single-grain-based analysis compared to weight-based analysis. A total of 17 metabolites showed statistically different accumulation between ploidy types with similar fold changes in both analyses.

Conclusion

Seed-size measures obtained by microscopic imaging were useful for data normalization. Single-grain-based analysis enables evaluation of metabolism of each seed and elucidates the metabolic profiles of precious bioresources by using small amounts of samples.

Abstract

The nut and shell of cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) were evaluated for insecticidal efficacy at concentrations of 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% per 150 g bambarra groundnut (Voandzeia subterranea L.) Verde seeds against Callosobruchus subinnotatus (Pic.) (Bruchidae). Cashew nut shell was highly toxic to C. subinnotatus and achieved 100% insect mortality within 48 hours at 7.5% and 100% mortality within 72% hours at 2.5 and 5.0% concentrations. Oviposition and progeny development of the insect were severely suppressed while seeds were protected from damage by the bruchid. Seed germination was, however, impaired at all concentrations, suggesting that seed treated with cashew products may be suitable for consumption but not be suitable as planting stock.  相似文献

We studied the influence of seed size on germination, seedling growth and seedling responses to light in Ligularia virgaurea, a clonal herb native to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. (1) Under unshaded conditions, large seeds had significantly (P < 0.001) higher rates of germination than did small seeds. Both large and small seeds showed significantly reduced levels of germination under shaded conditions. The magnitude of this effect was greater for small seeds than for large seed. (2) Seedlings from large seeds had significantly higher rates of biomass accumulation (g · day−1) than did seedlings from small seeds. The total biomass of seedlings from larger seeds is larger than that from smaller ones. And seedlings from large and small seeds also differed in biomass allocation. (3) Seedlings from small seeds have higher relative growth rates (RGR; g · g−1 · day−1) than do seedlings from large seeds under both shaded and unshaded conditions. In contrast, there was no significant difference in leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA) or leaf weight ratio (LWR) between seedlings from small and large seeds. RGR, LAR, SLA and LWR were all significantly higher in seedlings grown under shaded conditions than under unshaded conditions.  相似文献

The reproductive capacity in nine Mexican Douglas-fir populations was determined by analyzing seed production traits from 144 trees collected in 2001. Significant variation was found for all traits among populations; they contributed between 21% and 43% of total phenotypic variation found in these traits, indicating broad differences in reproductive capacity for that particular year. Seed efficiency (filled seed/seed potential) varied from 14% to 42% among populations; all populations from Central Mexico had a seed efficiency below 25%. The proportion of developed that were empty seeds varied from 0.40 to 0.81 among populations, whereas seed size varied also from 0.88 to 1.21 g per 100 seeds among them. Average ratio of filled seed weight to cone weight (reproductive efficiency) was 29.6 mg g−1, but it varied three-fold between populations with extreme values. Populations with larger cones had greater seed potential and heavier seed but not necessarily higher reproductive or seed efficiency. Most reproductive indicators were significantly correlated with latitude, with lower values in the marginal populations from Central Mexico, in the southern extreme of the species range. Given these results, the need for conservation of Douglas-fir populations in Central Mexico is discussed.  相似文献

Oilseed crops are global commodities for their oil and protein seed content. We have engineered the oilseed Camelina sativa to exhibit increased protein content with a slight decrease in oil content. The introduction of a phytoene synthase gene with an RNAi cassette directed to suppress the storage protein 2S albumin resulted in seeds with an 11–24 % elevation in overall protein. The phytoene synthase cassette alone produced enhanced β-carotene content of an average 275 ± 6.10 μg/g dry seed and an overall altered seed composition of 11 % less protein and comparable nontransgenic amounts of both oil and carbohydrates. Stacking an RNAi to suppress the major 2S storage protein resulted in seeds that contain elevated protein and slight decrease in oil and carbohydrate amounts showing that Camelina rebalances its proteome within an enlarged protein content genotype. In both β-carotene enhanced seeds with/without RNAi2S suppression, the seed size was noticeably enlarged compared to nontransgenic counterpart seeds. Metabolic analysis of maturing seeds indicate that the enhanced β-carotene trait had the larger effect than the RNAi2S suppression on the seed metabolome. The use of a GRAS (generally regarded as safe) β-carotene as a visual marker in a floral dip transformation system, such as Camelina, might eliminate the need for costly regulatory and controversial antibiotic resistance markers. β-carotene enhanced RNAi2S suppressed Camelina seeds could be further developed as a rapid heterologous protein production platform in a nonfood crop leveraging its enlarged protein content and visual marker.  相似文献

Benefits conferred on plants in ant-mediated seed dispersal mutualisms (myrmecochory) depend on the fate of transported seeds. We studied the effects of elaiosome presence, seed size and seed treatment (with and without passage through a bird's digestive tract) on short-term seed fate in Rhamnus alaternus. In our study, we define short-term seed, or initial, seed fate, as the location where ants release the seeds after ant contact with it. The elaiosomes had the most influence on short-term fate, i.e. whether or not seeds were transported to the nest. The workers usually transported big seeds more often than small ones, but small ants did not transport large seeds. Effect of seed size on transport depended on the ant species and on the treatment of the seed (manual extraction simulating a direct fall from the parent plant vs. bird deposition corresponding to preliminary primary dispersal). Probability of removal of elaiosome-bearing seeds to the nest by Aphaenogaster senilis increased with increasing seed weight.  相似文献

Oceanic islands have been colonized by numerous non-native and invasive plants and animals. An understanding of the degree to which introduced rats (Rattus spp.) may be spreading or destroying seeds of invasive plants can improve our knowledge of plant-animal interactions, and assist efforts to control invasive species. Feeding trials in which fruits and seeds were offered to wild-caught rats were used to assess the effects of the most common rat, the black rat (R. rattus), on 25 of the most problematic invasive plant species in the Hawaiian Islands. Rats ate pericarps (fruit tissues) and seeds of most species, and the impacts on these plants ranged from potential dispersal of small-seeded (≤1.5 mm length) species via gut passage (e.g., Clidemia hirta, Buddleia asiatica, Ficus microcarpa, Miconia calvescens, Rubus rosifolius) to predation where <15% of the seeds survived (e.g., Bischofia javanica, Casuarina equisetifolia, Prosopis pallida, Setaria palmifolia). Rats consumed proportionally more seed mass of the smaller fruits and seeds than the larger ones, but fruit and seed size did not predict seed survival following rat interactions. Although invasive rat control efforts focus on native species protection, non-native plant species, especially those with small seeds that may pass internally through rats, also deserve rat control in order to help limit the spread of such seeds. Black rats may be facilitating the spread of many of the most problematic invasive plants through frugivory and seed dispersal in Hawaii and in other ecosystems where rats and plants have been introduced.  相似文献

Nonhuman primates represent a major component of the frugivore biomass in several rain-forest communities. Although there is considerable evidence that prosimians, monkeys, and apes serve as dispersal agents for many tropical trees, little attention has been paid to the more basic questions of why certain species of primates swallow and void seeds, and what, if any, are the advantages to an animal of having a large, hard, bolus pass through its digestive tract. We examine patterns of fruit-eating and seed-swallowing in two species of free-ranging tamarins: Saguinus mystax and Saguinus geoffroyi. Fruits commonly eaten by tamarins contain large seeds surrounded by a fibrous and adhesive pulp or arilate seed coat. They generally swallow seeds and pulp together. Intact seeds are voided over a 1- to 3-h period. Measurements of 132 seeds naturally voided by Panamanian tamarins average 11.2 mm in length and 0.3 g. The greatest number of large seeds contained in the digestive tract of a single animal at one time was 13. In the case of moustached tamarins, we collected 220 seeds. Average seed length is 11.9 mm and average seed weight is 0.3 g. At the time of capture, one animal had 26 seeds in its digestive tract. In both tamarin species, there is evidence of sex-based differences in feeding behavior. Adult female moustached and Panamanian tamarins swallowed and voided seeds of larger size than adult males did. Seed size is positively correlated with pulp weight (p <. 001), therefore females were selecting food items with higher nutritional rewards than adult males did. Given their small body size and relatively short digestive tract, why do tamarins swallow such large seeds? Although several explanations are possible, we propose that the large number and size of undigested seeds continuously passing through the tamarin gut serve a curative role in mechanically dislodging and expelling intestinal parasites—Ancanthocephala (spiny-headed worms)—from their digestive tracts.  相似文献

Solenopsis geminata (F.) is an invasive ant that is widely distributed in weedy areas and agricultural fields in Taiwan. Previous studies have found that S. geminata harvests the seeds of numerous plants. In the present study, we further investigated the composition of harvested seeds in ant nests and seed selection by workers. The seed caches in S. geminata nests sampled in eight areas in Taiwan suggest that the seeds harvested by workers were diverse and belonged to 52 plant species in 17 plant families. Twenty-three species (44%) belong to the family Gramineae, and most of the seeds weighed from 0.02 to 2.29 mg, which might suggest that these are the main seeds harvested by S. geminata from their habitat. Ten common species with similar seed weights were used to compare the seed preferences of workers from two experimental sites. The results suggest that the seed preference was different between the two experimental sites. The seeds of Casuarina equisetifolia showed the most obvious difference in seed removal speed, which might suggest that S. geminata potentially prefers the encountered seed species in the habitat. The various plant species in the ant nests and seed preference suggest that fire ants easily accept newly encountered plant species. As more than half of the plant species (52%) and the total seed number (63%) belonged to exotic species, the role of S. geminata might be negative because it tends to harvest exotic seeds and has a high opportunity to improve the establishment of exotic seedlings.  相似文献

Though arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are indigenous to agricultural soils, their beneficial effects to host plants could be further improved by inoculation with efficient species. The method of AM propagation described in the present study uses oil cake as a supporting medium for the simultaneous delivery of sesame seeds and AM inoculum to the field. Experiment was conducted in a farmer’s field located at Avoor, Kerala, India where sesame was cultivated as a winter crop in rice fallows. Oil cake entrapped with sesame seeds (var. Tilatara) and AM fungus (Funneliformis dimorphicus) inoculum was prepared by thoroughly mixing sterilized coconut cake and neem cake (5:1 v/v), surface sterilized sesame seeds and sterilized spore sieving of F. dimorphicus from a pot culture in a 10% solution of a polysaccharide gum obtained from the seeds of Strychnos potatorum L. Entire mix was moulded into 2.5 cm cubes (ca. 5g) containing approximately 25–30 seeds and 200–300 spores cube?1 and shade dried before application. The cubes were broadcast @ 600 kg ha?1 in inoculated treatments. In uninoculated treatments, the oil cake cubes devoid of the fungal component was used. Harvested root samples from the inoculated treatments showed a high frequency (%F) and intensity (%M) of colonization by AM fungi as well as frequency of vesicles (%V) and arbuscules (%A) compared to uninoculated control. The growth (root length, shoot length and leaf area) and yield characters (pod number, seed number, seed weight and oil content) of sesame plants were significantly (p=0.05) improved under the present method of AM propagation indicating its viability under field condition.  相似文献

The subject of counting by weighing as addressed in Ridout & Suntheralingam (1997) is revisited. When the coefficient of variation of the seed weights is known, we show how to modify the seed testing procedure in the aforementioned paper to account for the uncertainty introduced by obtaining a given number of seeds by weight, rather than exact counting. We find that counting by weighing requires a greater number of seeds per sub‐sample than that required by the exact counting method of Ridout & Roberts (1997). Furthermore, the number of seeds per sub‐sample increases with decreasing initial sample size used to estimate mean seed weight.  相似文献

Abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations and growth rates of developing soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cv. Wye) seeds and pod walls were determined from anthesis to maturation using high pressure liquid chromatographic techniques. Developing soybean seeds contain up to 12,200 ng/g fresh weight of ABA compared to 330 ng/g fresh weight for pod walls. In the developing seeds ABA levels correlated with growth rates, being the highest during the most active growth period of seed enlargement, and then decreasing to less than 10 ng/g fresh weight at maturity. Higher levels of ABA were found to occur in the cotyledons and seed coats than the root-shoot axes at 21 days postanthesis. The time required for excised root-shoot axes to initiate growth in liquid culture decreased as seed development progressed and ABA levels of the seeds declined.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of climate on reproduction, consecutive flowering, and the level of energy investment toward sexual reproduction, as well as the relationships between flowering rates and plant size, and between seed production and plant size. The target species wasHeloniopsis orientalis C. Tanaka (Liliaceae), an evergreen perennial herbaceous plant. Natural populations were monitored in permanent quadrats for seven years in a low-elevation area (Namhansanseong) and for five years in an area with a high elevation (Maranggol). The Tn indices required for flowering were relatively similar each year, but those for seed dispersal fluctuated. The period for seed production was proportional to the total length of the growing season. Rates of flowering varied annually, and depended on conditions in each study area. Flowering was discontinuous (i.e., not consecutive) at Namhansanseong, but was continuous (i.e., consecutive) at Maranggol. The rates were proportional to plant size; the minimum size class that supported flowering was 60–90 cm2, and almost all plants with >210 cm2 leaf area flowered. The overlapping range in plant size between flowering and non-flowering plants was relatively broad. Numbers of fruit per plant ranged from 1-12, with an average of 6.0 fruits at Namhansanseong and 5.0 fruits at Maranggol. In the latter area, the range in the number of seeds produced and their weight per plant varied drastically, being 1700–1867 seeds and 133.2–177.5 mg, respectively. Almost all correlation coefficients between plant size and fruit number, plant size and seed number, or plant size and seed weight were significant at the 1% level. Lastly, energy investment rates for sexual reproduction were about 30–50% of the net productivity, varying over the years. These rates were proportional to growth rates.  相似文献

Seed dispersal mutualisms are essential to ensure the survival of diverse plant species and communities worldwide. Here, we investigated whether the invasive Argentine ant can replace native ants by fulfilling their functional role in the seed dispersal of the rare and threatened endemic myrmecochorous plant, Anchusa crispa, in Corsica (France). Our study addressed the potential of Linepithema humile to disperse elaiosome-bearing seeds of A. crispa, examining L. humile’s effects on (1) the composition of communities of ants removing seeds, (2) the number of seed removals, (3) seed preference, (4) the distance of seed dispersion, and (5) seed germination. We caught seven native species at the control site, but only the Argentine ant at invaded sites. L humile removed A. crispa seeds in greater numbers than did native ants, respectively 66 and 23%, probably due to their higher worker density. The invader was similar to native ants with respect to distance of seed transport. Finally, rates of seed germination were not significantly different between seeds previously in contact with either Argentine ants or not. Taken all together, these results suggest that the Argentine ant is unlikely to pose a threat to A. crispa population. These results have important implications for the management of this rare and threatened endemic plant and provide an example of non-negative interactions between invasive and native species.  相似文献

The mature viable seeds within the seed crop of one individual of Costa Rican Mucuna andreana varied in fresh weight from 2.6 to 9.4 g (average of 6.81 g, s.d. = 1.09 g, n = 282). The seed coats weighed 14 to 17 percent of the fresh seed weight and variation in their weight was not the cause of the variation in seed weight. There was no significant difference in average seed weight of seeds from pods with 1 to 5 filled seeds. The great range of seed weights within one plant's seed crop is interpreted as possibly of adaptive significance in generating a more homogeneous seed shadow than would be the case with a narrow range of seed weights.  相似文献
