Drainage in foam was analyzed by the capillary model proposed by Haas and Johnson. Foam was produced by introducing air into an ovalbumin solution through a spinneret. The electric conductivity at selected positions in the foam and the drained liquid height below the foam were measured at constant intervals. The measured electric conductivity was converted to the liquid volume fraction by Prager’s equation. The capillary model described well not only the liquid leakage rate from foam but also the liquid volume fraction in foam. The ratio of the liquid volume fraction in foam to the volume fraction of the Plateau border was much larger than the value estimated from Haas and Johnson’s result. It was confirmed that a time constant, T, involved in the model was suitable for estimating foam stability only by one parameter. However, T is affected not only by material characteristics but also by the foam height. On the other hand, since the ratio of the liquid volume fraction in foam to the volume fraction of the Plateau border reflects the material characteristics, it may be used for comparing the foam stability between materials with the same viscosity and density.  相似文献

Questions: How does draining affect the composition of vegetation? Are certain functional groups favoured? Can soil parameters explain these differences? Location: Central Faroe Islands, treeless islands in the northern boreal vegetation zone. Since 1987, an area of 21 km2 at 100–200 m a.s.l. was drained in order to provide water for hydro‐electric production. Method: Vegetation and soil of a drained area and a control, undrained neighbouring area of approximately the same size were sampled in 2007. Six sites were sampled in each area. The vegetation was classified with cluster analysis. Results: Four plant communities were defined in the area: Calluna vulgarisEmpetrum nigrumVaccinium myrtillus heath, Scirpus cespitosusEriophorum angustifolium blanket mire, Carex bigelowiiRacomitrium lanuginosum moss‐heath, Narthecium ossifragumCarex panacea mire. Heath was more extensively distributed within, and was the dominant community of the drained area, whereas moss‐heath was more extensive in the undrained area. Blanket mire and mire had approximately the same distribution in both areas. For the blanket mire, species composition indicated drier conditions in the drained than in the undrained area. The drained area had higher frequencies of woody species and lichens, grasses had finer roots and available soil phosphate was considerably higher, whereas the undrained area had higher frequencies of grasses and sedges. Conclusion: The dominant plant communities were different in the two areas, which indicated that the blanket mire was drying in the drained area. Higher concentration of soil phosphate in the drained area also indicated increased decomposition of organic soils owing to desiccation.  相似文献

Abstract. The decision was taken by an opencast coal mining company to translocate on-site blanket bog vegetation, on completion of mining, at a site in Co. Durham, UK, both to preserve it and to use it to enhance recolonization. The vegetation of the treatments was monitored for seven years after site completion and this paper reports on the progress of the translocated material and its effect on recolonization. Translocation of large turves of blanket bog into carefully prepared receptor cells preserved most of the vegetation intact, but resulted in severe decline in the frequency of Sphagnum, while the design of the receptor site as strips of translocated vegetation enclosing strips of spread, stored peat accelerated recolonization of the intervening bare peat by Calluna vulgaris, but not of other target species. This attempt to translocate blanket bog vegetation and at the same time use it to accelerate recolonization was only partly successful. It was concluded that the ecological requirements of species known to be significant for ecosystem function, such as Sphagnum, must be fulfilled if translocation of blanket bog is to be attempted in future.  相似文献

The hatching of cladoceran ephippia from a 15‐cm long sediment core was investigated, and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula clones were isolated from different sediment layers. Bosmina microfossil data were also analyzed, and compared with the corresponding data from a Pb210 dated core, which allowed us to infer the age of the sediment layers. Using changes in Bosmina microfossil morphologies, we were, furthermore, able to infer the presence of different regimes of fish predation. C. quadrangula was found to hatch in layers with an inferred age of approximately a century. Newly hatched individuals had smaller eye‐size in sediment layers corresponding to high predation by young‐of‐the‐year perch. Newly hatched individuals also generally had a marked neck‐spine. In contrast, morphological characters of C. quadrangula clones reared in the laboratory over several generations showed no variation in relation to predation regime, indicating the absence of fixed genotype level changes. Furthermore, the laboratory grown clones only rarely produced a neck‐spine. The results suggest phenotypic variation in response to the regime under which ephippia were produced.  相似文献

Distinct O1 and O2 layers, representing annual litter fall, enabled the sequential loss of biomass and nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) to be reconstructed in undisturbed litter layers of Banksia ornata in the Dark Island heathland, South Australia. Apart from an initial loss in biomass and nitrogen, the dry weight and nutrient content of the O1 layer, exposed to the desiccating influence of the atmosphere, remained relatively constant until covered by the following year's leaf fall. Under the blanket of newly fallen leaves, biomass decomposition proceeded continuously through autumn, winter, spring, into the dry summer season. Even though the biomass of the decomposing leaf (O2) layer decreased continuously, its nutrient content remained relatively constant until the summer season was reached when total decomposition and nutrient loss occurred. During spring, fine rootlets invaded the decomposing litter layer (O2) and, together with decomposer fungi, bacteria and soil fauna, maintained the total nutrient content of the decomposing leaf at a constant level. By late spring-early summer shoot growth of the dominant heath species was initiated, inducing the mobilization of the nutrients stored in the decomposing litter layer.  相似文献

Automotive waste polyester polyurethane (PUR) foams represent a major solid waste management problem. In the present investigation, we examined the capacity of Pseudomonas chlororaphis ATCC 55729 to biodegrade waste polyester PUR foam obtained from an automotive industry in shake cultures. Ammonia nitrogen, pH and diethylene glycol (DEG) concentrations were found to increase steadily over a period of 12 days. Furthermore, scanning electron photomicrographs of foam pieces also showed evidence of biodegradation. This shows that waste PUR foams can be successfully biodegraded under controlled laboratory environment.  相似文献

Anaerobic treatment of cheese whey using a 17·5 litre upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was investigated in the laboratory over a range of influent concentration from 4·5 to 38·1 g COD litre−1 at a constant hydraulic retention time of 5 days. The results indicated that two sludge distribution regions, a sludge bed and a sludge blanket, as well as two distinct reaction phases, acidogenic and methanogenic, were formed. However, as the substrate loading was increased, the acidogenic region extended into the methanogenic region in the upper portion of the reactor until the whole region was acidogenic, leading to the failure of the reactor.  相似文献

Ferrous iron bio‐oxidation by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans immobilized on polyurethane foam was investigated. Cells were immobilized on foams by placing them in a growth environment and fully bacterially activated polyurethane foams (BAPUFs) were prepared by serial subculturing in batches with partially bacterially activated foam (pBAPUFs). The dependence of foam density on cell immobilization process, the effect of pH and BAPUF loading on ferrous oxidation were studied to choose operating parameters for continuous operations. With an objective to have high cell densities both in foam and the liquid phase, pretreated foams of density 50 kg/m3 as cell support and ferrous oxidation at pH 1.5 to moderate the ferric precipitation were preferred. A novel basket‐type bioreactor for continuous ferrous iron oxidation, which features a multiple effect of stirred tank in combination with recirculation, was designed and operated. The results were compared with that of a free cell and a sheet‐type foam immobilized reactors. A fivefold increase in ferric iron productivity at 33.02 g/h/L of free volume in foam was achieved using basket‐type bioreactor when compared to a free cell continuous system. A mathematical model for ferrous iron oxidation by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans cells immobilized on polyurethane foam was developed with cell growth in foam accounted by an effectiveness factor. The basic parameters of simulation were estimated using the experimental data on free cell growth as well as from cell attachment to foam under nongrowing conditions. The model predicted the phase of both oxidation of ferrous in shake flasks by pBAPUFs as well as by fully activated BAPUFs for different cell loadings in foam. Model for stirred tank basket bioreactor predicted within 5% both transient and steady state of the experiments closely for the simulated dilution rates. Bio‐oxidation at high Fe2+ concentrations were simulated with experiments when substrate and product inhibition coefficients were factored into cell growth kinetics. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Herein, this study reports high‐efficiency, low‐temperature ZnO based planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with state‐of‐the‐art performance. They are achieved via a strategy that combines dual‐functional self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) modification of ZnO electron accepting layers (EALs) with sequential deposition of perovskite active layers. The SAMs, constructed from newly synthesized molecules with high dipole moments, act both as excellent surface wetting control layers and as electric dipole layers for ZnO‐EALs. The insertion of SAMs improves the quality of PbI2 layers and final perovskite layers during sequential deposition, while charge extraction is enhanced via electric dipole effects. Leveraged by SAM modification, our low‐temperature ZnO based PSCs achieve an unprecedentedly high power conversion efficiency of 18.82% with a VOC of 1.13 V, a JSC of 21.72 mA cm?2, and a FF of 0.76. The strategy used in this study can be further developed to produce additional performance enhancements or fabrication temperature reductions.  相似文献

Background: Finite element (FE) analysis has shown promise for the evaluation of elastomeric foam personal protection devices. Although appropriate representation of foam materials is necessary in order to obtain realistic simulation results, material definitions used in the literature vary widely and often fail to account for the multi-mode loading experienced by these devices. This study aims to provide a library of elastomeric foam material parameters that can be used in FE simulations of complex loading scenarios.

Method of Approach: Twelve foam materials used in footwear were tested in uni-axial compression, simple shear and volumetric compression. For each material, parameters for a common compressible hyperelastic material model used in FE analysis were determined using: (a) compression; (b) compression and shear data; and (c) data from all three tests.

Results: Material parameters and Drucker stability limits for the best fits are provided with their associated errors. The material model was able to reproduce deformation modes for which data was provided during parameter determination but was unable to predict behavior in other deformation modes.

Conclusions: Simulation results were found to be highly dependent on the extent of the test data used to determine the parameters in the material definition. This finding calls into question the many published results of simulations of complex loading that use foam material parameters obtained from a single mode of testing. The library of foam parameters developed here presents associated errors in three deformation modes that should provide for a more informed selection of material parameters.  相似文献

It is known that both natural and artificial electric fields (EF) affect plants physiological parameters as well as germination, growth and yield. The present article describes results of a preliminary experiment on the impact of electric field on aquatic plants biogeochemistry. The objective of the present study was the assessment of the influence exerted by the electric field on growth and trace metals content of Elodea canadensis. In a laboratory experiment plants were exposed to the field intensity of 54?kV m?1 for 7?days. The plants length was measured and the content of Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn was determined using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Results showed that the application of electric field slightly enhanced the growth of E. canadensis shoots. The content of Mn and Ni was significantly lower, and Pb and Zn significantly higher in plants exposed to the electric filed, while Fe content did not differ between control and EF treatment. This provides a rationale for further studies on biological effects of electric field in trace metal contaminated waters and application of an electrically enhanced phytoremediation.  相似文献

Abstract

The moss Racomitrium lanuginosum (Hedw.) Brid. is widely distributed in the cool-oceanic north and west of the British Isles, where it is an important element in the vegetation of blanket mire. It has been described as occurring on the present-day surface of British blanket mire in two situations (i.e. where the local mire water table may be lowered, despite high atmospheric humidity), on the tops of tall hummocks and adjacent to areas of peat erosion, where it may be dominant in the vegetation. Accordingly, the occurrence of R. lanuginosum is widely perceived as indicative of drier mire conditions and/or mire degradation. In contrast, recent palaeoecological studies have documented the recurrence of R. lanuginosum in the absence of either hummock upgrowth or peat erosion. Such studies suggest that R. lanuginosum may also occur on blanket mire as a component of climatically-mediated mire development. This paper presents critical new data to document the decomposition of R. lanuginosum and describes the results of recent palaeoecological studies that have negated the exclusive role of R. lanuginosum in mire drying/degradation. We present evidence for the active role of R. lanuginosum in persistent blanket mire development, suggesting the moss may occur during periods of climate change towards increased wetness, after a sustained period of drier conditions. The results are of wider relevance in evidencing the sensitivity of oceanic blanket mire to past climate change.  相似文献

Capsule Peatlands are very important habitats for birds despite low species diversity.

Aims To describe the variation in breeding bird populations that occur on different types of Irish peatlands and their associated habitat characteristics.

Methods Bird abundance and diversity were compared between four peatland habitat types (fens, raised bogs, Atlantic blanket bogs and montane blanket bogs) at 12 study sites using transects. Various measures of habitat quality were also taken at each location.

Results Only 21 species were recorded during the study, with Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis and Sky Lark Alauda arvensis accounting for over 80% of all birds recorded. Fens had greater bird species diversity and densities than the other three peatland types. Raised bogs, Atlantic blanket bogs and montane blanket bogs were very similar in terms of their avian diversity. Each of the recorded bird species was associated with different aspects of the peatland habitat.

Conclusion This study shows that despite the relatively low avian species diversity of Irish peatlands, they are of enormous conservation value due to the presence of species of high conservation concern such as Willow Ptarmigan (Red Grouse) Lagopus lagopus and Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of two types of clothing, leaving legs covered or uncovered, on seasonal cold tolerance in women. Experiments were carried out to compare cold tolerance at an ambient temperature (T a) of 10° C in December between two groups of subjects, who wore either knee-length skirts (skirt group) or full-length trousers (trouser group) for 3 months from September to November. The main results are summarized as follows: rectal temperatures continued to fall for 40 min in the trouser group when the subjects were covered by a blanket, while it became stable in 30 min in the skirt group; rectal temperatures showed greater increases in the skirt group when the blanket was removed after 40 min exposure to T a of 10° C; metabolic heat production was kept significantly lower in the skirt group when uncovered or covered by a blanket at T a of 10° C; metabolic heat production was negatively correlated with mean skin temperature and was always higher in the trouser group when measured at the same mean skin temperature; in the uncovered condition diastolic blood pressure increased significantly in the trouser group but not in the skirt group. These results would suggest that the subjects who wore skirts for 3 months from September to November had improved their ability to tolerate the cold.  相似文献

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays an important role in thermoregulation in species living in cold environments, given heat can be generated from its chemical energy reserves. Here we investigate the existence of BAT in blubber in four species of delphinoid cetacean, the Pacific white-sided and bottlenose dolphins, Lagenorhynchus obliquidens and Tursiops truncates, and Dall’s and harbour porpoises, Phocoenoides dalli and Phocoena phocoena. Histology revealed adipocytes with small unilocular fat droplets and a large eosinophilic cytoplasm intermingled with connective tissue in the innermost layers of blubber. Chemistry revealed a brown adipocyte-specific mitochondrial protein, uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), within these same adipocytes, but not those distributed elsewhere throughout the blubber. Western blot analysis of extracts from the inner blubber layer confirmed that the immunohistochemical positive reaction was specific to UCP1 and that this adipose tissue was BAT. To better understand the distribution of BAT throughout the entire cetacean body, cadavers were subjected to computed tomography (CT) scanning. Resulting imagery, coupled with histological corroboration of fine tissue structure, revealed adipocytes intermingled with connective tissue in the lowest layer of blubber were distributed within a thin, highly dense layer that extended the length of the body, with the exception of the rostrum, fin and fluke regions. As such, we describe BAT effectively enveloping the cetacean body. Our results suggest that delphinoid blubber could serve a role additional to those frequently attributed to it: simple insulation blanket, energy storage, hydrodynamic streamlining or contributor to positive buoyancy. We believe delphinoid BAT might also function like an electric blanket, enabling animals to frequent waters cooler than blubber as an insulator alone might otherwise allow an animal to withstand, or allow animals to maintain body temperature in cool waters during sustained periods of physical inactivity.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds from Penicillium viridicatum and Methylobacterium mesophilicum growing on laboratory media and on component materials of automobile air conditioners were analyzed with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. P. viridicatum produced compounds such as 4-methyl thiazole, terpenes and alcohols, whereas M. mesophilicum produced dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, and chlorophenol with growth on laboratory media. In comparison with laboratory media, fewer volatiles were detected from colonized foam insulation materials. Biofilms of M. mesophilicum on aluminum evaporator components produced mainly dimethyl disulfide. These biofilms, after inoculation with P. viridicatum, produced offensive smelling alcohols and esters such as 2-methyl propanol, 3-penten-2-ol, and the ethyl ester of butanoic acid. The moisture and substrates innate to the automobile air conditioning systems provided an environment suitable for microbial biofilm development and odor production. Reduction of retained moisture in the air conditioning system coupled with use of less susceptible or antimicrobial substrates are advised for remediation of the noxious odors. Summary Cultures ofNocardia amarae give rise to cell-stabilized foams in a laboratory scale foaming apparatus. The organism produces a surfactant and the cells are very hydrophobic; factors which, in terms of froth flotation theory, are essential for foam production and transport of the cells from the aqueous to the bubble phase. The addition of montmorillonitic clay to the culture prior to foaming prevents foam stabilization. The results obtained suggest the formation of a salt-dependent, reversible, bacterium-montmorillonite complex which prevents transport of cells to the bubble phase.  相似文献

Espresso coffee foam, called crema, is known to be a marker of the quality of espresso coffee extraction. However, the role of foam in coffee temperature has not been quantitatively clarified. In this study, we used an automatic machine for espresso coffee extraction. We evaluated whether the foam prepared using the machine was suitable for foam analysis. After extraction, the percentage and consistency of the foam were measured using various techniques, and changes in the foam volume were tracked over time. Our extraction method, therefore, allowed consistent preparation of high-quality foam. We also quantitatively determined that the foam phase slowed cooling of the liquid phase after extraction. High-quality foam plays an important role in delaying the cooling of espresso coffee.  相似文献

The use of selected yeasts for winemaking has clear advantages over the traditional spontaneous fermentation. The aim of this study was to select an indigenous Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast isolate in order to develop a regional North Patagonian red wine starter culture. A two-step selection protocol developed according to physiological, technological and ecological criteria based on killer interactions was used. Following this methodology, S. cerevisiae isolate MMf9 was selected among 32 indigenous yeasts previously characterized as belonging to different strains according to molecular patterns and killer biotype. This isolate showed interesting technological and qualitative features including high fermentative power and low volatile acidity production, low foam and low sulphide production, as well as relevant ecological characteristics such as resistance to all indigenous and commercial S. cerevisiae killer strains assayed. Red wines with differential volatile profiles and interesting enological features were obtained at laboratory scale by using this selected indigenous strain.  相似文献
