Snow cover has dramatic effects on the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems in winter. In the tundra, the subnivean space is the primary habitat of wintering small mammals and may be critical for their survival and reproduction. We have investigated the effects of snow cover and habitat features on the distributions of collared lemming (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) and brown lemming (Lemmus trimucronatus) winter nests, as well as on their probabilities of reproduction and predation by stoats (Mustela erminea) and arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus). We sampled 193 lemming winter nests and measured habitat features at all of these nests and at random sites at two spatial scales. We also monitored overwinter ground temperature at a subsample of nest and random sites. Our results demonstrate that nests were primarily located in areas with high micro-topography heterogeneity, steep slopes, deep snow cover providing thermal protection (reduced daily temperature fluctuations) and a high abundance of mosses. The probability of reproduction increased in collared lemming nests at low elevation and in brown lemming nests with high availability of some graminoid species. The probability of predation by stoats was density dependent and was higher in nests used by collared lemmings. Snow cover did not affect the probability of predation of lemming nests by stoats, but deep snow cover limited predation attempts by arctic foxes. We conclude that snow cover plays a key role in the spatial structure of wintering lemming populations and potentially in their population dynamics in the Arctic.  相似文献

The high‐arctic tundra ecosystem has the world's simplest vertebrate predator–prey community, with only four predators preying upon one rodent species, the collared lemming (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus). We document the functional and numerical responses of all the four predators in NE Greenland. Using these data, we assess the impact of predation on the dynamics of the collared lemming with a 4 yr cycle and >100‐fold difference between maximum and minimum densities. All predator species feed mostly (>90%) on lemmings when lemming density is >1 ha?1, but the shapes of the predators’ responses vary greatly. The snowy owl (Nyctea scandiaca) is present and breeds only when lemming densities at snowmelt are >2 ha?1, giving rise to a step‐like numerical response. The long‐tailed skua (Stercorarius longicaudus) has a type III functional response and shifts from alternate food (mainly berries and insects) to lemmings with increasing lemming density. The skua surpasses all the other predators in summer by its total response. The type III functional response of the Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) starts to increase at much lower lemming densities than the responses of the avian predators, but it has only a weak numerical response. Finally, the stoat (Mustela erminea) is the most specialized predator and the only one with a clearly delayed numerical response. According to their specific functional and numerical responses, each predator plays a key role at some point of the lemming cycle, but only the stoat has the potential to drive the lemming cycle. Stoat predation is greatly reduced in the winter preceding the lemming peak, and it reaches a maximum in the winter preceding the lowest lemming summer density. Stoat predation appears to maintain low lemming densities for at least two successive years. Our study provides empirical support for the specialist predator hypothesis about small mammal population cycles.  相似文献

All hitherto identified aromatic compounds accumulating in leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. upon infection with virulent or avirulent strains of Pseudomonas syringae pathovar tomato (Pst) were indolic metabolites. We now report the strong accumulation of a novel type of natural product, 3-O--d-ribofuranosyl adenosine (3RA), exclusively during compatible interactions. In contrast to the various indolic metabolites, 3RA was undetectable in incompatible interactions of A. thaliana leaves with an avirulent Pst strain, as well as in uninfected control leaves. A similar, strong induction of 3RA was observed in compatible but, again, not in incompatible interactions of Pst with its natural host, Lycopersicon esculentum. The strength of the effect and its confinement to compatible interactions suggests that it may be applicable as a diagnostic tool.Abbreviations Pst Pseudomonas syringae pathovar tomato - 3RA 3-O--d-ribofuranosyl adenosine  相似文献

I studied the population structure and dynamics of the collared lemming, Dicrostonyx groenlandicus Traill, on Traill Island (NE Greenland) in 1998 to 2000. This is the first comprehensive study of a Greenlandic collared lemming population. During this period, population density continuously declined (>100 fold-decrease) from more than 10 ind/ha (peak year 1998) to less than 0.1 ind/ha (low year 2000), with the exception of one period of increase in the winter 1998–99. Several population parameters were correlated with these changes in density. Average body mass was greater in the peak year than in the intermediate year (1999) and greater in August than in July in both years. Growth rates were only positive in 1998 and only for young lemmings. Females had unexpectedly larger home ranges than males and were more mobile than males during the decline phase (1999). Poor recruitment and high predation rates (up to 3.4% per day for females in 1998) were the proximate causes of the summer declines in the study area. A simple calculation shows that even with a maximal rate of increase, this lemming population would not have been able to compensate for the high predation rate, and hence it necessarily faced a predation-induced summer decline during the part of population oscillation studied.  相似文献

Olavi Eskelinen, Pertti Sulkava and Risto Sulkava From 1982 to 2003 we studied fluctuations in populations of the wood lemmingMyopus schisticolor (Liljeborg, 1844) in the Heinävesi (eastern Finland) and Keuruu regions (western Finland) by counting field signs and dead animals in standardized field surveys. We compared the population fluctuations of lemmings to those of other voles, owls and small mustelids in these regions. The lemming population in Heinävesi fluctuated regularly in 3-year cycles and in synchrony with the field vole population. Populations of owls also fluctuated in synchrony with wood lemming and field vole populations. In the Keuruu region, oscillations in the wood lemming population were irregular, and neither lemming and vole populations nor lemming and owl populations were correlated. Although direct mechanistic evidence is lacking, specialist predators such as weasels and owls probably cause the cyclicity in the field vole and wood lemming populations in the Heinävesi area. On the other hand, scarcity of high-quality habitats, unfavourable winter weather conditions and generalist predators may prevent the development of cyclicity in the wood lemming population of Keuruu.  相似文献

In low-productivity environments such as the tundra, it has been proposed that regular, multi-annual population cycles of lemmings could be driven by winter food depletion in years of peak abundance. If lemming population dynamics is controlled by food resources, we predict that (1) winter grazing should negatively impact the abundance of food plants, (2) this impact should be proportional to lemming density and (3) high lemming winter grazing pressure should result in reduced plant growth during the following summer. We tested these predictions on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada, where two species of lemmings are present: the brown (Lemmus trimucronatus) and collared lemming (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus). We installed 16 exclosures in their preferred wintering habitat (snowbeds) and annually sampled plant biomass inside and outside exclosures at snow melt and at peak growth during the summers of 2009–2012, covering a full population cycle. Winter grazing had no impact on total vascular plant or moss biomass at snow melt in all years. Among plant families, only Caryophyllaceae, which was uncommon, showed a decline. In moss taxa, a negative effect was found on Polytrichum in only 1 year out of three. Overall, plant regrowth during the subsequent summer showed annual variation and tended to be reduced in the 2 years of high lemming abundance. However, this could be a consequence of summer grazing. Overall, the impact of lemming winter grazing on plants was weak and short-lived, even in years of high lemming abundance. Therefore, our results are not consistent with the hypothesis that food depletion during winter was the cause of the lemming decline following peak abundance at our study site. Other factors may limit lemming populations and prevent them from reaching densities high enough to exhaust their food resources.  相似文献

In systems where predation plays a key role in the dynamics of prey populations, such as in Arctic rodents, it is reasonable to assume that differential patterns of habitat use by prey species represent adaptive responses to spatial variation in predation. However, habitat selection by collared (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) and brown (Lemmus trimucronatus) lemmings depends on intra- and inter-specific densities, and there has been little agreement on the respective influences of food abundance, predators, and competition for habitat on lemming dynamics. Thus, we investigated whether predation affected selection of sedge-meadow versus upland tundra by collared lemmings in the central Canadian Arctic. We first controlled for the effects of competition on lemming habitat selection. We then searched for an additional signal of predation by comparing habitat selection patterns between 12 control plots and one large grid where lemmings were protected from predators by fencing in 1996 and 1997, but not during 5 subsequent years when we monitored habitat use in the grid as well as in the control plots. Dicrostonyx used upland preferentially over meadows and was more numerous in 1996 and 2011 than in other sample years. Lemmus was also more abundant in 1996 than in subsequent years, but its abundance was too low in the exclosure to assess whether exclusion of predators influenced its habitat selection. Contrary to the effects of competition, predation had a negligible impact on the spatial dynamics of Dicrostonyx, at least during summer. These results suggest that any differences in predation risk between the two habitats have little direct influence on the temporal dynamics of Dicrostonyx even if induced through predator–prey cycles.  相似文献

The dominant glycosylation mutants of MDAY-D2 mouse lymphoma cells, designated class 2 (D33W25 and D34W25) were selected for their resistance to the toxic effects of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and shown to express elevated levels of Neu5Gc. In accordance with this, the activity of CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase was found to be substantially higher in the mutant cells. The hydroxylase in the D33W25 mutant cells exhibited kinetic properties identical to those of the same enzyme from mouse liver. Growth rate experimentsin vivo andin vitro, where the mutant cells grew more slowly at low cell densities in serum-free medium and also formed slower growing tumours in syngeneic mice, indicate that CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase expression may be associated with altered growth of the mutant cells.Abbreviations WGA wheat germ agglutinin - Neu5Ac N-acetyl--d-neuraminic acid - Neu5Gc N-glycology--d-neuraminic acid - CMP-Neu5Ac cytidine-5-monophospho-N-acetylneuraminic acid - CMP-Neu5Gc cytidine-5-monophospho-N-glycoloylneuraminic acid - FACS fluorescence-activated cell sorting - buffer A triethylamine hydrogen carbonate, pH 7.6 (concentration given at appropriate points in the text) - SFM serum free medium - IMDM Iscove's modified Dulbecco's medium - CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase CMP-N-acetylneuraminate: NAD(P)H oxido-reductase (N-acetyl hydroxylating) (EC 1.14.99.18); CMP-sialate hydrolase (EC 3.1.4.40); sialic acid-pyruvate lyase (EC 4.1.3.3)  相似文献

Lemmings play a key role in the tundra food web and their widely reported cyclic oscillations in abundance may have a strong effect on other components of the ecosystem. We documented seasonal and annual variations in population density, reproductive activity, survival, and body mass of two sympatric species, the brown (Lemmus trimucronatus) and collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus), over a 2-year period on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada. We live trapped and marked lemmings on two grids throughout the summer and we estimated demographic parameters using three different capture–recapture methods. All three methods are based on robust estimators and they yielded similar population density estimates. The density of brown lemmings declined markedly between the 2 years whereas that of collared lemmings was relatively constant. For brown lemmings, 2004 was a peak year in their cycle and 2005 a decline phase. Density of brown lemmings also decreased during the summer, but not that of collared lemmings. The recruitment of juvenile brown lemmings in the population increased during the summer and was higher in the peak year than in the year after, but no change was detected in collared lemmings. Survival rates of both species tended to be lower during the peak year than in the following year and body mass of brown lemmings was higher in the peak year than in the following year. We conclude that both changes in adult survival and juvenile recruitment occur during the population decline of brown lemmings.  相似文献

Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty from the Philippines was grown in the subtropical waters of Shikoku Is., Japan (33°2635 N, 133°2500 E). The growth rate, carrageenan yield, viscosity and gel strength were compared to values for plants cultured in the Philippines and between spring-summer, autumn-winter and winter periods in Japan. Maximum daily growth rates up to 8% occurred in Japan in October to November (autumn) while die-back occurred in winter due to low seawater temperature (15 °C). The average growth rate (ca 5%) in spring-summer to autumn was comparable to that in the Philippines. During the winter (December), the daily growth rate was approximately 1%. Gel strength, determined in a 1.5% solution in both water and 0.2% KCl, was 850 g cm-2 and 2000 g cm-2, respectively. Sol viscosity was 890 cP at 75 ° C. These values are quite similar to values obtained in the Philippines.  相似文献

Current hypotheses regarding the causes of population cycling of brown lemmingsLemmus trimucronatus (Richardson, 1828), developed during long-term studies from 1950–1974. We maintain that three factors largely determine the timing and amplitude of population cycles in brown lemmings. First, a basic interaction between lemmings and vegetation sets the stage because dense populations of lemmings severely damage the vegetation, at which point lemming populations decline and remain low until the vegetation recovers. Second, opportunistic predators, mainly jaegers and owls, assemble as the snow melts during peak years and drive already declining populations to extremely low densities. Weasels are effective predators under the snow, but they appear irregularly. If weasel populations increase early in the cycle, lemming populations that normally increase dramatically during the winter in a peak year can be decimated before the snow melts. Finally, both wet summers that result in extensive flooding of the preferred habits of lemmings and freezing rains or winter thaws that cause ice formation reduce food availability, disrupt the cycle and extend the period between peak densities. Numerous observations, experimental results and simulation models support these views. Similar results regarding the importance of the available food supply, particularly in winter, and of the predation regime also have been reported for arvicoline populations at lower latitudes.  相似文献

Resistance to verticillium wilt, a vascular disease causing yield losses in many crops, is conferred in tomato by a single dominant allele, Ve. A population segregating for the Ve allele was generated using near-isogenic tomato lines. Analysis of the parental tomato DNA using the polymerase chain reaction and 400 random primers, each 10 deoxyribonucleotides in length, produced 1,880 amplified DNA fragments. Of the four polymorphisms observed between the resistant and susceptible parental genotypes, only one was linked to the Ve gene. No recombination was observed between this DNA marker and the Ve locus, indicating that the linkage is less than 3.5±2.7 cM. The marker detected both the susceptible and resistant alleles, producing amplified DNA fragments of approximately 1,300 and 1,350 bp, respectively. The sequence of the primer, determined from cloned amplified products, was 5 CTCACATGCA 3 instead of the expected 5 CTCACATGCC 3. The marker will be of value to tomato breeding programs because of the tight linkage, Codominant nature, and analytical procedure utilized.  相似文献

Year-class strength of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) has been studied over periods of 10 and 35 years, respectively, in two shallow sandy areas on the Swedish west coast. In one area, Gullmar Bay (N 58 ° 19 – W 11 ° 33), 0-group plaice were sampled quantitatively with a drop trap at 0–0.7 m depth and densities between 0.2 and 3.8 ind./m2 were recorded in early summer. In the other area, Laholm Bay (N 56 ° 30 – W 12 ° 55), 0-group plaice were sampled semi-quantitatively in August with young-fish trawl at 1.5 m depths. Densities between 0.001 and 0.28 ind./m2 were assessed. The effects of temperature and wind (in the winter and early spring) and predation (in early summer), on the recruitment of 0-group plaice were investigated. In Gullmar Bay high recruitment occurred after severe winters and in years when on-shore winds dominated during spring. No such correlations were found in Laholm Bay. In Gullmar Bay a significant inverse relationship was found between the density of O-group plaice in early summer and the biomass of brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) and the shore crab (Carcinus maenas), the main predators in the nursery area. The importance of physical and biological factors regulating recruitment in plaice are discussed.  相似文献

The reproductive behaviour of female Varroa destructor mites invading worker brood cells during the winter months (January to mid-March) was investigated in four Apis mellifera colonies in UK. The number of viable offspring produced during a reproductive cycle, per mite, was only 0.5 during winter compared with 1.0 during the summer. This was mainly due to a large increase in the population of non-reproductive mites (winter 20%, summer 8%). This increase can be explained by the high level of male offspring mortality observed in winter (42% vs. 18% in summer), which results in nearly half of the newly reared female mites being unfertilised. Since mites that do reproduce lay a similar number of eggs in winter ( ) as in summer ( ), and the level of mortality suffered by the first female offspring is similar in winter (7%) as in summer (6%), it is probably not the internal physiological state of the host which causes the high level of winter non-reproduction, as has been previously suspected.  相似文献

A study of the phenolic compounds of the closely related papilionoid tribes,Podalyrieae andLiparieae, proved that the flavonoid patterns of hydrolysed seed extracts are remarkably conservative. Butin (7, 3, 4-trihydroxyflavanone), 3-hydroxydaidzein (7, 3, 4-trihydroxyisoflavone), vicenin-2 (6, 8-di--D-glucopyranosyl-5, 7, 4-trihydroxyflavone) and orobol (5, 7, 3, 4-tetrahydroxyisoflavone) were isolated and identified as the major flavonoids. The seeds ofAmphithalea, Coelidium, Liparia, Xiphotheca, Calpurnia, Stirtonanthus andPodalyria accumulated three isoflavone O-glycosides that yielded 3-hydroxydaidzein on hydrolysis. In contrast,Virgilia contained a unique combination of vicenin-2 and orobol. Vicenin-2 was also present inCalpurnia as a major compound, butStirtonanthus insignis was the only other species studied that contained orobol (in trace amounts only). Butein, a chalcone, was reported byHarborne from the seed ofCyclopia subternata. This compound's flavanone analog, butin, was the principal component inCyclopia. A cladistic analysis, using flavonoid, alkaloid and morphological data, showed that the seed flavonoids of thePodalyrieae andLiparieae behave rather poorly as cladistic characters. They are, however, of considerable taxonomic value at the tribal level favouring the opinion that the two tribes should be combined. The apparent absence of flavonoids in the seed ofHypocalyptus supports the suggestion that it should be excluded from theLiparieae. Flavonoids also show that theArgyrolobium-group is very different from the tribeCrotalarieae and support the recent transfer of this group to the tribeGenisteae.  相似文献

RNA maturation and modulation of RNA stability play important roles in chloroplast gene expression. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that both the 5- and 3-untranslated regions (UTRs) contain sequence and structural elements that guide these processes, and interact with specific proteins. We have previously characterized the spinach chloroplast petD 3-UTR in detail by in vitro approaches. This stem-loop forming sequence is a weak terminator but is required for RNA maturation and also exhibits sequence-specific protein binding. To test petD 3-UTR function in vivo, tobacco chloroplast transformants were generated containing uidA reporter genes flanked by variants of the petD 3-UTR, including one which does not form an RNA-protein complex in vitro, and one which lacks a stem-loop structure. Analysis of uidA mRNA indicated that a stable secondary structure is required to accumulate a discrete mRNA, and that changes in the 3-UTR sequence which affect protein binding in vitro can also affect RNA metabolism in vivo. The 3-UTR also influenced -glucuronidase protein accumulation, but not in proportion to RNA levels. These results raise the possibility that in tobacco chloroplasts, the 3-UTR may influence translational yield.  相似文献

The left (5) inverted terminal repeat (ITR) of the Mos1 mariner transposable element was altered by site-directed mutagenesis so that it exactly matched the nucleotide sequence of the right (3) ITR. The effects on the transposition frequency resulting from the use of two 3 ITRs, as well as those caused by the deletion of internal portions of the Mos1 element, were evaluated using plasmid-based transposition assays in Escherichia coli and Aedes aegypti. Donor constructs that utilized two 3 ITRs transposed with greater frequency in E. coli than did donor constructs with the wild-type ITR configuration. The lack of all but 10 bp of the internal sequence of Mos1 did not significantly affect the transposition frequency of a wild-type ITR donor. However, the lack of these internal sequences in a donor construct that utilized two 3 ITRs resulted in a further increase in transposition frequency. Conversely, the use of a donor construct with two 3 ITRs did not result in a significant increase in transposition in Ae. aegypti. Furthermore, deletion of a large portion of the internal Mos1 sequence resulted in the loss of transposition activity in the mosquito. The results of this study indicate the possible presence of a negative regulator of transposition located within the internal sequence, and suggest that the putative negative regulatory element may act to inhibit binding of the transposase to the left ITR. The results also indicate that host factors which are absent in E. coli, influence Mos1 transposition in Ae. aegypti.Communicated by G. P. Georgiev  相似文献

2D NMR spectroscopy and J coupling constant analysis are applied to resolve the structure of two photoproducts of thymidylyl-(35)-thymidine. These products are cyclobutane type thymine dimers possessing the cis-syn (the predominant one) and trans-syn geometry. The cis-syn is formed in an ANTI-ANTI conformation about the N-glycosyl linkages and resembles the normal base-stacked configuration. The glycosidic conformation in solution of the 5 terminal fragment differs from the crystal in which the less common SYN conformation is observed. In this isomer only the sugar pucker of the 3 terminal fragment is changed substantially with respect to the dinucleotide. The trans-syn isomer is formed in a SYN-ANTI glycosidic conformation. In this isomer the sugar puckers of both deoxyribose rings are affected and a preference for a pure 2-endo conformation is observed.Abbreviations dTpdT 2-deoxythymidylyl-(35)-2-deoxythymidine - dTp[]dT cyclobutane type photodimers of dTpdT - dTp- and dTp[]- their 5' terminal fragments (fragment A) - -pdT and-[]pdT their 3 terminal fragments (fragment B) - RP-HPLC reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography - COSY two-dimensional correlated spectroscopy - 2D NOE two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser spectroscopy  相似文献

Concern about colonization of marshesby plant species such as Phragmites australisand Lythrum salicariahas highlighted the needfor management strategies. However, there is a lack ofinformation in the literature on which to base thesedecisions. This study compares the alpha diversity ofmarshes to assess the impact of invasion by Phragmitesand Lythrum. Species occurrence andstem density were measured in marshes dominated by Phragmites, Lythrum, Typhaspp., or otherherbaceous perennials in the Charles River watershedin eastern Massachusetts, USA, and species richness,Shannon's H, Simpson's reciprocal (1/D), and Pielou'sJ were compared among six community types. The threediversity indices had significantly higher values forTypha-Lythrummarshes than for any of the othermarsh types (Tukey test, p< 0.05), with mean values(± s.d.) of H = 2.00 ± 0.74, 1/D = 3.51± 1.68 and J = 0.69 ± 0.1. Marshes dominatedby Phragmiteshad the lowest diversity, with H= 0 and D = 1, i.e. they were monospecific. Typhadominated marshes had the second lowest values, with H = 0.17 ± 0.05, 1/D = 1.05 ± 0.01, andJ = 0.11 ± 0.03. These results support the ideathat a reduction in diversity can be expected inmarshes colonized by Phragmites. However, thehigh diversity found in the Typha-Lythrummarshes contradicts the expectation of lower diversityafter invasion by Lythrum. This information mayalter marsh management decisions.  相似文献

The interaction of 3,5-bis-O-(,,,-tetrafluoropyrid--yl)thymidine with various nucleophilic reagents was studied to evaluate the possibility of molecular design of new types of nucleic acid analogues using S NAr reactions. The reactions with morpholine and sodium azide led to the introduction of one and two nucleophilic residues into each of the polyfluorinated pyridine rings. The nucleophilic polycondensation with bifunctional reagents ethylenediamine and hexamethylenediamine depended on the nature of nucleophile and reaction conditions and resulted in the formation of supramolecules containing about five or more than 20 pyrimidine bases.  相似文献
