The vertical distribution in the vegetation of questing Ixodes ricinus ticks was investigated in two different vegetation types (high and low vegetation) at two localities in south-central Sweden during 1992-1993 (Toro) and 1995 (Bogesund). Significant correlations were found between the vertical distribution of immature ticks and the height of the vegetation. The greatest mean availabilities of the larvae and nymphs in low vegetation were in the intervals 0-9 and 30-39 cm, respectively. The larval numbers were greatest close to the ground (0-29 cm) in both high and low vegetation. The larval : nymphal ratio, at ground level at localities free of ground vegetation, varied between 8 : 1 and 32 : 1. In high vegetation, the greatest mean numbers of nymphal and adult ticks were at height intervals of 50-59 and 60-79 cm, respectively. These ranges are within the estimated height interval (40-100 cm) of the main part of the body surface of their preferred host, the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). The presence of most questing I. ricinus larvae at ground level would favour the transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., since this is where the highly reservoir-competent rodents and shrews usually occur.  相似文献

A longitudinal survey was carried out during a 2 year period in Western France to assess the infestation level of grazing pastures byIxodes ricinus ticks. Four farms were visited once a month and each of the grazing pastures was sampled in the centre and at the border using the blanket dragging method. A total of 3562I. ricinus (34 adults, 900 nymphs and 2628 larvae) were collected and the infestation was significantly higher during the first year (p<0.0001). The infestation level byI. ricinus varied between grazing pastures and farms. Grazing pastures in the vicinity of forest were more infested than the others, all through the study. The seasonal distribution of ticks showed peaks, with low fluctuations between farms, years and stages. Tick abundance could not be related to vegetation, but only to the vicinity of woods.  相似文献

Dark-field microscopy was used to determine the number of Borrelia spirochetes in 630 standard preparations obtained from adult ixodid ticks (344 Ixodes persulcatus and 286 I. ricinus) collected in 1989-92 in the Leningrad region of Russia. The average numbers of Borrelia in I. persulcatus and I. ricinus preparations were 34.7 and 23.3 per 100 microscopic fields, respectively. The maximal individual values registered each year for ticks of both species were several hundred times greater than the minimal values. Ticks carrying relatively small numbers of Borrelia generally predominated. Proportions of more heavily infected ticks varied considerably from year to year. These parameters were significantly higher in foci with predominance of I. persulcatus ticks. As a consequence, risk to acquire Lyme borreliosis in such foci is considered greater than in foci where I. ricinus predominates.  相似文献

Ixodes uriae is a common ectoparasite of colonial seabirds in the circumpolar areas of both hemispheres. Despite its potential effects on host population dynamics and its role as a vector of pathogens, little is known about the reproductive strategies of this tick under natural conditions. Multiple mating of engorged females has been recorded in several instances, but the resulting paternity of offspring and its potential evolutionary significance have never been evaluated. Here, the paternity of offspring produced by females collected in the field was determined by using 5 polymorphic microsatellite markers. The results indicate that multiple mating in I. uriae can lead to multiple paternity in broods and, given the life history of this parasite, may be related to the adaptive benefits of producing genetically diverse offspring. Copulations took place both before and after the female's blood meal, but most successful fertilizations seemed to occur before engorgement. This suggests that the mating strategies of this tick may have evolved in response to local environmental constraints and, in particular, to the availability of conspecific ticks.  相似文献

We examined Ixodes ricinus embryos between 18 and 28 days of development with light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The differences in inner structure attested to establish three successive developmental stages: days 18-20, day 23, and days 26-28. Between 18 and 20 days the embryos are at early stages of organogenesis. Salivary glands cannot be identified at that stage. In 23-day-old embryos salivary glands are already outlined but the structure of alveoles is still different from that in larvae in which the embryonic development has been completed. Gland cells start to form alveoles and become active between 26 and 28 days of the development.  相似文献

An analysis of fluctuating asymmetry was conducted on populations of the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis. The eight groups used in this study consisted of larvae and nymphs and males and females from the states of Minnesota, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina and Georgia and the F1 progenies of reciprocal crosses between ticks from Massachusetts and Georgia. Measurements included 16 larval, 19 nymphal, ten female and 12 male bilateral characters. Only five differences between the right and left bilateral characters had normal distributions with means of zero and differences in variances between the groups. These five characters included three setal lengths of the larvae, the spiracular plate length of females and the coxa I internal spur widths of males. Bivariate plots of character size ((R+L)/2) and asymmetry (R-L) showed no correlation. In the spiracular plate lengths of females and one of the setal lengths, ticks from Massachusetts had significantly less within-group variance than all the other groups. The only character in which fluctuating asymmetry was observed was the coxa I internal spur width of males, in which ticks from Minnesota, Missouri and North Carolina had significantly greater variance than the remaining groups; fluctuating asymmetry in this character may be explained by sexual selection. The cross progeny did not demonstrate any fluctuating asymmetry, as would be expected if the northern and southern forms of I. scapularis were true species. The virtual lack of fluctuating asymmetry in the characters used in this study further supports the conclusions of other studies which concluded that I. scapularis is a species with clinal variation and a broad geographic distribution.  相似文献

Sexual attractiveness of unengorged, semiengorged and fully engorged females of both field and laboratory populations of Ixodes ricinus was studied under laboratory conditions by means of a computerised video tracking system. A male and a female were allowed to walk freely in a glass arena during 1 h and their behavioural interactions were observed. Obtained results revealed that the feeding status of I. ricinus females affects their sexual attractiveness. The highest attractiveness was observed in engorged females, the lowest in unengorged females of the field population. Copulation occurred in all experimental groups with the highest frequency observed in the unengorged virgin laboratory females. Despite engorged females being highly attractive for males on distance, the frequency of copulation was low. Differences between field and laboratory populations were found in both behavioural parameters and frequency of copulation. A study of regeneration in nymphs and adults of the South African tick Ixodes (Afrixodes) rubicundus, from which the forelegs had been amputated during the previous instar, revealed that the structural changes in regenerated Haller's sensory organs resemble those observed in other ixodid ticks, in particular in another prostriate tick, Ixodes (Ixodes) ricinus. The adult regenerates re-establish their atavistic features in terms of the increased number of different sensilla on the distal knoll, in the anterior pit and the capsule. The nymphal regenerates, in contrast, re-establish the features of the previous instar through a reduction in the number of some sensilla on the distal knoll and in the post-capsular area. The structural changes in different compartments of the organ appear independent. The phenomenon of regenerative induction through the appearance of specific changes in Haller's organ of the contralateral non-treated foreleg is probably characteristic only of prostriate ticks. A unique modification in the regenerated Haller's organ as revealed by duplication of the Haller's organ capsule was discovered in both I. rubicundus nymphs and adult ticks.  相似文献

Unfed (questing) Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected by blanket dragging on a monthly basis from heather-dominated, Vaccinium-dominated and bracken-dominated vegetation communities from two different biogeographical regions of the UK (the Quantock Hills in Somerset, south west England and the North York Moors, north east England) throughout the spring and summer months of 1991 and 1992. Eighteen sites were monitored across the two regions and a total of 1920 blanket drags were carried out. Vaccinium sites showed high tick densities at all life stages, as did bracken sites. Significantly lower numbers of larval and nymphal ticks per drag were collected on heather sites than were collected on either Vaccinium (bilberry/whortleberry) or bracken sites, while similar numbers of adult ticks per drag were collected from each of the three vegetation communities. There was no significant difference between the mean numbers of any tick life stage collected on the Quantock Hills and those collected on the North York Moors on these vegetation communities or between the mean numbers of any tick life stage collected in 1991 and those collected in 1992 on these vegetation communities.  相似文献

This investigation examines multiple paternity in Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae). Previous studies have shown that multiple mating occurs in this tick, but this is the first evaluation of multiple paternity. Three family groups were examined by a panel of polymorphic microsatellite loci; all ticks were bred from wild-collected engorged females with a copulating male attached. For most larvae, the attached males could be excluded as possible sire, and in the 3 tested families, at least 2 of 3 females mated successfully with more than 1 male. This finding suggests that multiple paternity is a common reproductive strategy in I. ricinus, which may have consequences for the ticks' dispersal success by increasing the genetic diversity in broods from single females colonizing new sites.  相似文献

The formation of the peritrophic matrix in the midgut of females of 5 ixodid tick species (Ixodes pacificus, I. pavlovskyi, I. persulcatus, I. ricinus and I. scapularis) was studied by means of light and electron microscopy in different periods of the feeding and after detachment. The formation of the peritrophic matrix started when the first food portions came into the gut lumen, 9-12 hours after the attachment. Renovation of the peritrophic matrix took place during the whole feeding period; every new generation of midgut cells synthesized their own matrix. It was deposited on the apical surface of every midgut cell in the beginning of differentiation, and was functioning during the life of the cell. The peritrophic matrix separates spaces of the cavitary and cytozoic digestions.  相似文献

Changes in the midgut of the Ixodes ricinus nymphs at the stage of developmental diapause were studied. It is established, that the midgut of the tick nymphs undergoes the identical and synchronous changes at the development without diapause and in the state of diapause. In 7-8 months after feeding the midgut of the nymphs containes the digestive cells with gematine and food inclusions, as well as reserve cells, like the midgut of unengorged moulted female. But the midgut of diapausing nymphs retaines such condition during the whole period of diapause.  相似文献

Mortality due to Karoo paralysis amongst livestock is of considerable economic importance in South Africa. Indications are that the extent of vertical migration of adult ticks, to reach questing positions on grasses, is influenced by sudden climatic chages. Such influences as well as selection of questing substrates were investigated under controlled conditions. Vertical migration of adult Ixodes rubicundus on copper rods was determined in a square metal arena within a closed glass container in a room in which temperature and light could be controlled. Significantly more female and male ticks migrated vertically on 1.5 mm diameter rods than on 4.0 mm rods and on 450 mm long rods than on 100 mm rods. More ticks of both sexes migrated vertically at RH>80% than at RH<50% and at 12°C than at 21°C. More female than male and more older than younger ticks migrated vertically in all experiments. The results of this study contribute towards an understanding of the epidemiology of Karoo paralysis.  相似文献

The sex ratio is an important parameter which characterizes the state and dynamics of natural populations of animals. Although ixodid ticks are specialized ectoparasites, most species are bisexual and are characterized by a 1:1 sex ratio for their progeny. In natural populations and even in laboratory colonies, biased sex ratios are often observed. Ixodes rubicundus, the Karoo paralysis tick, parasitizes domestic stock and wild ungulates in South Africa. Adults quest from vegetation, can mate off or on the host and males are seldom parasitic. We hypothesized that the sex ratio for I. rubicundus would be 1:1 when observed directly in the progeny but that it would be strongly biased towards females in samples of parasitic adults. The results mostly supported the hypothesis but it was also shown that unexplained and unpredictable variations can occur. On hosts, females dominated strongly, except on adult angora goats where the sex ratio was biased in favour of the males. This disparity may be related to a greater retention of males in the coarse, curly hair of angora goats compared to the other hosts. Monthly variations in the sex ratios of the tick on hosts are believed to be related to the large fluctuations in sex ratios of questing ticks.  相似文献

To determine hosts of the immature stages of a southern population of Ixodes ricinus, we trapped rodents and birds in an area of north-central Spain in May–June and August–September of 1998 and 1999. The most frequently trapped rodents were Apodemus sylvaticus (230 specimens) and Clethrionomys glareolus (99), with a larval infestation prevalence of 49% and 81%, respectively (in spring) and 21% and 41% (in summer). C. glareolus was always more heavily parasitized by larvae (mean numbers 19.8 in spring, 3.4 in summer) than A. sylvaticus (6.1 and 1.2, respectively). No nymphs were collected from the rodents. The larval distribution pattern differed considerably between rodent host species but not according to the season of the year. The most commonly trapped birds were members of the Turdidae, which had infestation incidences of about 70% (larvae) and 10% (nymphs) in spring and 20–15% in summer. We also used molecular methods for the identification of reservoir hosts of the larval ticks and of the pathogens they contained, from nymphs collected in the same site in June of 2002 and 2003. The study showed that most of the ticks had fed on birds and few on rodents and ruminants. Pathogens detected in these ticks included Babesia microti, Borrelia garinii, B. valaisiana and B. afzelii. Borrelia afzelii was detected in a tick that had apparently fed on a wild boar.  相似文献

The midgut hemolysin of Ixodes dammini (Acari:Ixodidae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Midgut homogenates of the hard tick, Ixodes dammini, lyse erythrocytes from rabbits, rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs. The activity displays sigmoidal kinetics, has an alkaline pH optimum, and is activated by temperature. Hemolytic activity is lost when homogenates are incubated with trypsin or heated for 1 hr at 60 C. Activity is not detectable in nonfed ticks as well as ticks attached for up to 2 days to a host, but increases during the growth phase of feeding. Such activity is postulated to help the initial process of the blood meal digestion by releasing the contents of erythrocytes for further enzymatic hydrolysis.  相似文献
