Most species of baleen whales were subject to intensive overexploitation by commercial whaling in this and previous centuries, and many populations were reduced to small fractions of their original sizes. Here, we review the status of baleen whale stocks, with an emphasis on those that are known or thought to be critically endangered. Current data suggest that, of the various threats potentially affecting baleen whales, only entanglement in fishing gear and ship strikes may be significant at the population level, and then only in those populations which are already at critically low abundance. The impact of some problems (vessel harassment, and commercial or aboriginal whaling) is at present probably minor. For others (contaminants, habitat degradation, disease), existing data either indicate no immediate cause for concern, or are insufficient to permit an assessment. While the prospect for many baleen whales appears good, there are notable exceptions; populations that are of greatest concern are those suffering from low abundance and associated problems, including (in some cases) anthropogenic mortality. These include: all Northern Right Whales Eubalaena glacialis, Bowhead Whales Balaena mysticetus of the Okhotsk Sea and various eastern Arctic populations, western Gray Whales Eschrichtius robustus, and probably many Blue Whale Balaenoptera musculus populations. We review the status of these populations and, where known, the issues potentially affecting their recovery. Although Humpback Whales Megaptera novaeangliae and Southern Right Whales Eubalaena australis were also heavily exploited by whaling, existing data indicate strong recovery in most studied populations of these species.  相似文献

The cyanobacterial species composition of nine Greek waterbodies of different type and trophic status was examined during the warm period of the year (May–October). Cyanobacterial water blooms were observed in all waterbodies. Forty-six cyanobacterial taxa were identified, 11 of which are known to be toxic. Eighteen species are reported for the first time in these waterbodies, 8 of which are known to produce toxins. Toxin producing species were found in all of the waterbodies and were primarily dominant in bloom formations (e.g., Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena flos-aquae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii). Cosmopolitan species (e.g., M. aeruginosa), pantropic (e.g., Anabaenopsis tanganyikae) and holarctic species (e.g., Anabaena flos-aquae) were encountered. Shallow, eutrophic waterbodies had blooms dominated by Microcystis species and were characterized by phytoplankton association M. Anabaena and Aphanizomenon species of association H were dominant in waterbodies with low dissolved inorganic nitrogen and thermal stratification in the summer. Total cyanobacterial biovolumes (CBV) ranged from 7 to 9,507 cm3 m−3 and were higher than Alert Level 2 and Guidance Level 2 (10 cm3 m−3; World Health Organization; WHO) in seven of the waterbodies. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 6 to 90,000 mg m−3 and were higher than Alert Level 2 and Guidance Level 2 (50 mg m−3; WHO) in eight of the waterbodies. There is also an elevated risk of acute toxicosis (Guidance Level 3; WHO) in five waterbodies. Water of an undesirable quality, hazardous to humans and animals occurs in several Greek waterbodies.  相似文献

Comparative studies of the three known species of Eurycercus (including the new species macrocanthus from Eastern Siberia described herein) demonstrate that macrocanthus is much more closely related to lamellatus than to glacialis in many details of morphology, ontogeny, and biology. Its most distinctive character is a great enlargement of the middle clasping hook on the first trunk limb, with the front end of the animal being completely restructured to accomodate its function. Both macrocanthus and lamellatus become reproductive at a small size and have a high reproductive potential, enabling them to survive heavy predation, as by fish, selective for large individuals, which the size-frequency distributions of the populations suggest is occurring. On the other hand, glacialis does not become reproductive until a much larger size, and its reproductive potential is smaller than in the other species, making it extremely vulnerable to predation concentrated on large individuals. Significantly, where it occurs in the coastal North Sea region, Iceland, and Greenland it is virtually restricted to water bodies without fish. The taxon lamellatus sens. lat. appears to be a complex of closely related species.  相似文献

Examination of more than 500 herbarium specimens of Eucalyptus marginata and E. rudis for the presence of two species of leafminers, Perthida spp., indicated that these native insect species were very rare in southwest Western Australia until first recorded in metropolitan Perth in 1878 and 1897, respectively, when west coast populations of both leafminer species evidently increased dramatically. The first record from the south coast dates from 1901 near Albany. Evidence of leafminer populations on E. marginata remote from coastal settlements was not recorded until 1917, near Cranbrook. The first record in jarrah forest was in 1967, some 10 years after outbreaks of the pest insect are known to have occurred in the forest. The Perthida leafminer species on E. rudis was first recorded from inland areas in 1904 and appears to have increased more rapidly in abundance than the species found on E. marginata. These early geographical and species differences in incidence are discussed in terms of changing disturbance patterns, which have not been simultaneous across southwest Western Australia.  相似文献

Reticulitermes urbis is a recently described termite species that has probably been introduced into Western Europe where it has been found exclusively in urban areas. However, little is known about the geographic distribution and origin of R. urbis. This study was undertaken to determine whether this species was introduced from the Balkans. A parsimony network did not show any association between mtDNA haplotypes and geographic regions suggesting that western European populations were the result of human-mediated dispersion. Variation patterns of the COI and COII regions as well as microsatellites showed that the genetic diversity of Western European colonies was lower than for colonies collected in the Balkans, suggesting that the introduced populations suffered from a founder effect. As observed in the introduced populations of R. flavipes, all colonies of R. urbis had an extended-family structure with several reproductives. These results support the scenario that this termite was introduced into Western Europe.  相似文献

Natural populations v. inbred stocks provide a much richer resource for identifying the effects of nucleotide substitutions because natural populations have greater polymorphism. Additionally, natural populations offer an advantage over most common research organisms because they are subject to natural selection, and analyses of these adaptations can be used to identify biologically important changes. Among fishes, these analyses are enhanced by having a wide diversity of species (>28 000 species, more than any other group of vertebrates) living in a huge range of environments (from below freezing to > 46° C, in fresh water to salinities >40 ppt.). Moreover, fishes exhibit many different life‐history and reproductive strategies and have many different phenotypes and social structures. Although fishes provide numerous advantages over other vertebrate models, there is still a dearth of available genomic tools for fishes. Fishes make up approximately half of all known vertebrate species, yet <0·2% of fish species have significant genomic resources. Nonetheless, genomic approaches with fishes have provided some of the first measures of individual variation in gene expression and insights into environmental and ecological adaptations. Thus, genomic approaches with natural fish populations have the potential to revolutionize fundamental studies of diverse fish species that offer myriad ecological and evolutionary questions.  相似文献

Lipid and fatty acid compositions of five notothenioid fishes from the Antarctic Weddell and Lazarev Seas were investigated in detail with regard to their different modes of life. The pelagic Aethotaxis mitopteryx was the lipid-richest species (mean of 61.4% of dry mass, DM) followed by Pleuragramma antarcticum (37.7%DM). The benthopelagic Trematomus lepidorhinus had an intermediate lipid content of 23.2%DM. The benthic Bathydraco marri (20.8%DM) and Dolloidraco longedorsalis (14.5%DM) belonged to the lipid-poorer species. Triacylglycerols were the major lipid class in all species. Important fatty acids were 16:0, 16:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9), 18:1(n-7), 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3). The enhanced proportions of the long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids, 20:1 and 22:1, in the lipid-rich pelagic fishes clearly reflected the ingestion of the two copepod species, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus, which are the only known Antarctic zooplankters rich in these fatty acids. Although wax esters are the major storage lipid in many prey species, they were absent in all notothenioid fishes studied. Thus, wax esters ingested with prey are probably converted to triacylglycerols via fatty acids or metabolised by the fishes. The enhanced lipid accumulation with increasingly pelagic lifestyle has energetic advantages, especially with regard to improved buoyancy. It is still unknown to what extent these lipids are utilised as energy reserves, since it has been suggested that not only the benthic but also the pelagic Antarctic fishes are rather sluggish, with a low scope for activity and hence low metabolic requirements. To assess the role that vision plays in the ability of the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) to detect its primary prey species, the calanoid copepod Calanus finmarchicus, we have compared the absorbance spectrum of the E. glacialis rod visual pigment, the transmittance spectra of C. finmarchicus carotenoid pigments, as well as the downwelling irradiance and horizontal radiance spectra collected during springtime at three locations in the western Gulf of Maine. The E. glacialis rod visual pigment absorbs light maximally at 493 nm, while microspectrophotometric measurements of the C. finmarchicus carotenoid pigments reveal transmission spectra with minima matching very well with the E. glacialis rod visual pigment absorbance spectra maximum. Springtime spectral downwelling irradiance and horizontal radiance values from the surface waters of Cape Cod Bay and at all depths in Great South Channel overlap the E. glacialis rod absorbance spectrum, allowing C. finmarchicus to appear as a high‐contrast dark silhouette against a bright background spacelight, thus facilitating visually guided contrast foraging. In contrast, spectral downwelling irradiance and horizontal radiance at depth in Cape Cod Bay, and all depths in Wilkinson Basin, do not overlap the E. glacialis rod absorbance spectrum, providing little if any useful light for contrast vision.  相似文献

The marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus) has been introduced in many areas in Central and Western Europe as a result of commercial trade with Eastern Europe, and is rapidly replacing the native pool frog (P. lessonae). A large number of Pelophylax species are distributed in Eastern Europe and the strong phenotypic similarity between these species is rendering their identification hazardous. Consequently, alien populations of Pelophylax might not strictly be composed of P. ridibundus as previously suspected. In the present study, we analysed the cytochrome‐b and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 3 genes of introduced and native Pelophylax species from Switzerland (299 individuals) in order to properly identify the source populations of the invaders and the genetic status of the native species. Our study highlighted the occurrence of several genetic lineages of invasive frogs in western Switzerland. Unexpectedly, we also showed that several populations of the native pool frog (P. lessonae) cluster with the Italian pool frog P. bergeri from central Italy (considered by some authors as a subspecies of P. lessonae). Hence, these populations are probably also the result of introductions, meaning that the number of native P. lessonae populations is fewer than expected in Switzerland. These findings have important implications concerning the conservation of the endemic pool frog populations, as the presence of multiple alien species could strongly affect their long‐term subsistence. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 112 , 442–449.  相似文献

It remains unclear why the majority of parthenogenetic lineages persist for only brief periods of evolutionary time. However, by characterizing their patterns of genetic variation, it is possible to gain insights regarding their evolutionary origin and potential. We examined clonal diversity patterns in high arctic populations of freshwater ostracodes with the goal of clarifying the factors promoting genotypic diversity. Allozyme electrophoresis showed that the three dominant ostracode species in high arctic ponds reproduce via apomictic parthenogenesis that two of these species (Prionocypris glacialis, Candona rectangulata) were both highly clonally diverse, and had allozyme phenotypes suggestive of polyploidy. Scanning microdensitometry confirmed that many clones of P. glacialis at Igloolik were polyploid. In contrast to most other polyploids, clones of P. glacialis seem to be autopolyploids. Although clonal variation in P. glacialis may reflect multiple transitions to parthenogenesis in an undetected sexual population, it seems likely that genomic recombination associated with polyploidy has also played a role in generating local diversity following the transition to parthenogenesis.  相似文献

While the growth of Southern Ocean phytoplankton is often limited by iron availability, there are no comparable experiments on sea‐ice algae. Here we assess the use of ferredoxin and flavodoxin to investigate the iron nutritional status of sea‐ice algae and describe the development of a quantitative immunoassay for both proteins in marine diatoms. High‐affinity monoclonal antibodies toward both proteins were produced from Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenb.) J. M. Lewin et Reimann, and these were used to develop Western blots. Western blots run on whole protein extracts detected both proteins with little cross‐reactivity toward other proteins. The two proteins could be successfully quantitated when applied to gels at between 5 and 50 ng in a volume of 25 μL (0.2–2 μg · mL?1). Flavodoxin and ferrodoxin expression was examined in the Antarctic diatoms Entomoneis kjellmannii (Cleve) Poulin et Cardinal, Navicula directa (W. Sm.) Ralfs, Fragilariopsis curta (Van Heurck) Hust., Pseudo‐nitzschia sp., Porosira glacialis (Grunow) E. G. Jørg., Fragilariopsis cylindrus (Grunow) Willi Krieg., Fragilariopsis sublinearis (Van Heurck) Heiden et Kolbe, C. closterium, Nitzschia lecointei Van Heurck, and the dinoflagellate Polarella glacialis Montresor, Procaccini et Stoecker. Two Arctic isolates were also examined, Nitzschia frigida (Grunow) and Fragilariopsis oceanica (Cleve) Hasle. Significant heterogeneity of protein expression was observed despite all cultures being grown in iron‐replete f/2 medium. Only one species, F. cylindrus, displayed the expected expression of ferredoxin only in iron‐replete medium. Four were observed to produce both proteins under iron‐replete conditions. Ferredoxin was not detected at all in F. curta and Pseudo‐nitzschia sp., but distinct flavodoxin bands were observed in both of these organisms. All species examined were observed to express either flavodoxin or ferredoxin or both of the proteins as determined by Western immunoblotting.  相似文献

A North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) genomic library was developed and screened with a (GATA)8 probe to identify tetranucleotide microsatellite loci. Sixteen characterized loci were polymorphic in North Atlantic and/or South Atlantic (Eubalaena australis) right whales, 12 being polymorphic in E. glacialis, and 15 in E. australis. Fourteen of these were combined with 21 other previously identified loci for a suite of 35 loci which can be used to increase resolution of genetic analyses of these species. Multiplex reactions were developed for genotyping samples at these loci, providing a method that is rapid, reliable and cost‐effective.  相似文献

The Synurophyceae is a well-supported clade of ecologically important heterokont algae found largely in freshwater planktonic habitats worldwide, whose members have cell coverings consisting of species-specific siliceous scales overlapped in a highly organized manner. Many synurophytes have been described as endemic and are found only in specific regions of the world. A thriving population of the European endemic, Mallomonas intermedia, was discovered in a remote desert pond situated in the Virgin Valley, Nevada, USA and in a stratigraphic sequence from the middle Eocene fossil locality known as Horsefly in British Columbia, Canada. Both North American finds were closely compared with populations from Europe, confirming the identifications. Before these discoveries, this species was recorded from numerous waterbodies exclusively in Europe, but was lacking from hundreds of sites examined from other continents. Its presence in western North America during the warm middle Eocene confirms that historically this species had a significantly wider distribution and may be best classified as a palaeoendemic. Additional species uncovered from a second fossil locality that are closely related to M. intermedia further support the presence of this lineage in North America during the Eocene. The living population in northern Nevada presents an enigma. Does this remote desert population represent a remnant population that has gone undetected until now, or is it a recent arrival from an unknown region by an unknown vector?  相似文献

Climatic changes during the quaternary history in Arctic regions have shaped the genetic variation and genealogies of Arctic species. Several studies have been conducted in recent years on genetic diversity of Arctic organisms, but marine fishes are largely underrepresented in these studies. Here, we present a study on mitochondrial variation in three Arctic gadoids: Arctic cod (Arctogadus glacialis), Greenland cod (Gadus ogac), and Polar cod (Boreogadus saida). In addition, geographic variation in Polar cod is presented. The sequence variation at the mtDNA presents similar patterns as observed for other related marine fishes. Variation in these three species reflects rather different historic processes, due to colonization and climatic changes than differences in life histories. In Polar cod, a deeper genealogy is observed and variation is dependent on both latitude and longitude. The deep genealogy indicates either admixture of separate lineages or a population, which has been stable in size during alternating cold and warm periods of the pleistocene. Abstract Seeds of four Western Australian accessions of Emex australis were stored outside and their germinability tested at 4–6 week intervals for 22 months. Accessions showed cyclical behaviour in germinability, with peaks in autumn/early winter and troughs in spring/summer. There was considerable variation between accessions in dormancy/non-dormancy cycles, but when plants from accessions with contrasting cycles were grown in a common environment, the cycles shown by their seeds were virtually identical. Thus, the parameters of seed dormancy/non-dormancy cycles in E. australis appear to be under environmental control. Only part of an E. australis seed population demonstrated cyclical changes in dormancy status, in contrast to many other annual species whose entire seed populations undergo such changes. Populations also contained individuals which were either continuously dormant or continuously non-dormant following a period of after-ripening. The latter seeds give E. australis the flexibility to recruit opportunistically after summer rainfall events in mediterranean-climate environments.  相似文献

The present study documents three specimens of Benthophiloides brauneri from the River Dniester. It is one of the rarest freshwater fishes in Europe, living along the western coast of the Black and Asov Seas, but these new records are 200 river km from the coast. We discuss whether the species has recently started to establish inland populations or inland specimens have previously been overlooked.  相似文献

Sixty-two freshwater dispersant (26 endemic), 26 saltwater dispersant and 20 exotic fishes have been recorded from Sri Lanka's inland waters. The discovery of nine new species of freshwater fish during the past decade suggests that Sri Lanka's fish fauna is not yet well known and that further discoveries can be expected. All the new species, and almost all the endemic ones, have been recorded from forested areas in the foothills of the southwestern wet zone and the Knuckles hills. The known ranges of many species are exceedingly small; almost all of them are habitat specialists. 25 species have at least two strong habitat preferences (in almost all case, shade being one), though a majority (32 species) have none. Habitat alteration is therefore the greatest threat to their survival.Eight freshwater fish species are considered endangered and a further five, vulnerable. Three species are rare, 18 common and 13 abundant. All but two of the endangered species and all the vulnerable species are endemic in Sri Lanka. Nine species are each restricted to only one drainage basin, and seven have a known range < 50 km2. Three species of diadromous gobies known only from small populations are considered vulnerable.Examination of the existing threats suggest that deforestation, the widespread dispersion of exotics, pollution caused by agricultural chemicals and increasing pressure from the food fishery present the greatest threats to fish populations. While the endemic fishes are restricted to or most abundant in the wet zone, the overwhelming extent (> 95%) of Sri Lanka's nature reserve areas are in the dry zone. A programme to maintain self-sustaining captive populations of the endangered species is urgently necessary.  相似文献
