The geometric shape is traditionally used to calculate phytoplankton cell measurements (e.g. biovolume), but it can also play an important role in determining community distributions. Little is known about how geometric shapes relate to other morphological traits or to the environment. We explored whether shapes and related morphological traits are selected by environmental forcing. For this, samples were collected seasonally at 21 stations in coastal-marine waters of the Salento Peninsula (Italy). Phytoplankton taxa were classified in terms of geometric shape, biovolume (organism size) and surface-to-volume ratio (S:V). The relationship between greatest axial linear dimension (GALD) and S:V was assessed for each shape. A Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was performed to evaluate phytoplankton shape distribution on temporal and spatial scales. Phytoplankton community was characterized by high morphological diversity. GALD and S:V were inversely related in most of the shapes. CCA showed that phytoplankton shape distribution was influenced more by seasonal than by spatial variation: elongated shapes characterized the cold period; rounded and combined shapes the warmer period. Most of the shapes showed conservatism of the S:V and trade-off with the size. Geometric shapes represent an interesting feature to be considered in trait-based approaches to study phytoplankton distributions in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The identification of color vision types in primates is fundamental to understanding the evolution and biological function of color perception. The Hard, Randy, and Rittler (HRR) pseudoisochromatic test categorizes human color vision types successfully. Here we provide an experimental setup to employ HRR in a nonhuman primate, the capuchin (Cebus libidinosus), a platyrrhine with polymorphic color vision. The HRR test consists of plates with a matrix composed of gray circles that vary in size and brightness. Differently colored circles form a geometric shape (X, O, or Δ) that is discriminated visually from the gray background pattern. The ability to identify these shapes determines the type of dyschromatopsy (deficiency in color vision). We tested six capuchins in their own cages under natural sunlight. The subjects chose between two HRR plates in each trial: one with the gray pattern only and the other with a colored shape, presented on the left or right side at random. We presented the test 40 times and calculated the 95?% confidence limits for chance performance based on the binomial test. We also genotyped all subjects for exons 3 and 5 of the X-linked opsin genes. The HRR test diagnosed two subjects as protan dichromats (missing or defective L-cone), three as deutan dichromats (missing or defective M-cone), and one female as trichromat. Genetic analysis supported the behavioral data for all subjects. These findings show that the HRR test can be applied to diagnose color vision in nonhuman primates.  相似文献

Shape variation in a benthic stream fish across flow regimes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Evolution of fish body shapes in flowing and non-flowing waters have been examined for several species. Flowing water can select for fish body shapes that increase steady swimming efficiency, whereas non-flowing water can favor shapes that increase unsteady swimming efficiency. Benthic stream fishes often use areas near the substrate that exhibit reduced or turbulent flow, thus it is unclear which swimming forms would be favored in such environments, and how shape might change across flow regimes. To test the relationship between fish body shape and flow regime in a benthic stream fish, we used geometric morphometric techniques to characterize lateral body shape in mountain sucker (Catostomus platyrhynchus) across flow rates, using stream gradient as an indicator of stream flow. Mountain suckers from low-flow environments were more streamlined, consistent with steady swimming body shapes, whereas mountain suckers from high flows had deeper bodies, consistent with unsteady swimming body shapes. In addition, smaller individuals tended to have more robust body shapes. These patterns are opposite to those predicted for stream fishes in the mid-water column. The benthic stream environment represents a distinct selective environment for fish shape that does not appear to conform to the simple dichotomy of flowing versus non-flowing water.  相似文献

In a large outdoor screened enclosure, female pipevine swallowtail butterflies (Battus philenor) were trained to search selectively for leaves of a shape similar to that of the Aristolochia host species to which they were exposed as adults. Conditioning was reversed by exposure to an alternative host species with a different leaf shape. Results indicated that contact with a host plant without oviposition was sufficient to induce a change in alighting responses to leaves of different shapes. Enclosure assays employing non-host species possessing leaves of different shapes and treated with host extracts demonstrated that females associate the shape of their alighting substrate with host chemicals present on the surface of that substrate. Results suggested that contact with host extracts without oviposition can induce changes in alighting responses to leaves of different shapes. A hypothesis is presented in which the primary host species for which females in an east Texas population learn to search varies seasonally with changes in host leaf chemistry.  相似文献

Wasps (Paravespula germanica) were trained and tested at an artificial feeding site, using convex shapes that produced colour contrast, luminance contrast, or motion contrast against the background. With each of the three types of contrast, we tested the wasps capacity to discriminate the learned shape from novel shapes. In addition, in each experiment we tested the wasps capability to recognize the learned shape when it offered a different type of contrast than that it had during the training. With the coloured shapes, a side-glance at the colour discrimination performance of the wasps was possible in addition. Wasps are found to discriminate between a variety of convex shapes regardless of the type of contrast that they produce against the background. Mainly, they discriminate the learned shape from novel shapes even if the colour of the shapes or the type of contrast they produce against the background is altered in the test. Thus, wasps generalize the learned shape from one colour to another, as well as between colour contrast, luminance contrast, and motion contrast.  相似文献

Floral shape is a visual cue used by pollinators to discriminate between competing flower species. We investigated whether discrimination is possible between closed shapes presenting the same colour and lacking a centrally presented fixation point. Free-flying honeybees, Apis mellifera L., had to discriminate between a solid square and a solid triangle of the same colour presented on the back walls of a Y-maze. Different colours were used to vary chromatic contrast and receptor-specific contrasts. Discrimination was possible whenever shapes presented contrast to the long wavelength receptor but was independent of chromatic contrast, overall intensity contrast or short and middle wavelength receptor contrast. We suggest that the bees used the edges of the closed shapes to solve the task. Bees failed when shapes were rotated, showing that a single shape edge was not sufficient for recognition. Motion is one of the most efficient cues for shape perception. We conducted behavioral experiments to examine how monkeys perceive shapes defined by motion cues and whether they perceive them as humans do. We trained monkeys to perform a shape discrimination task in which shapes were defined by the motion of random dots. Effects of dot density and dot speed on the shape perception of monkeys were examined. Human subjects were also tested using the same paradigm and the test results were compared with those of monkeys. In both monkeys and humans, correct performance rates declined when density or speed of random dots was reduced. Both of them tended to confuse the same combinations of shapes frequently. These results suggest that monkeys and humans perceive shapes defined by motion cues in a similar manner and probably have common neural mechanisms to perceive them. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Background

The extent to which co-evolutionary processes shape morphological traits is one of the most fascinating topics in evolutionary biology. Both passive and active pollination modes coexist in the fig tree (Ficus, Moraceae) and fig wasp (Agaonidae, Hymenoptera) mutualism. This classic obligate relationship that is about 75 million years old provides an ideal system to consider the role of pollination mode shifts on pollen evolution.

Methods and Main Findings

Twenty-five fig species, which cover all six Ficus subgenera, and are native to the Xishuangbanna region of southwest China, were used to investigate pollen morphology with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Pollination mode was identified by the Anther/Ovule ratio in each species. Phylogenetic free regression and a correlated evolution test between binary traits were conducted based on a strong phylogenetic tree. Seventeen of the 25 fig species were actively pollinated and eight species were passively pollinated. Three pollen shape types and three kinds of exine ornamentation were recognized among these species. Pollen grains with ellipsoid shape and rugulate ornamentation were dominant. Ellipsoid pollen occurred in all 17 species of actively pollinated figs, while for the passively pollinated species, two obtuse end shapes were identified: cylinder and sphere shapes were identified in six of the eight species. All passively pollinated figs presented rugulate ornamentation, while for actively pollinated species, the smoother types - psilate and granulate-rugulate ornamentations - accounted for just five and two among the 17 species, respectively. The relationship between pollen shape and pollination mode was shown by both the phylogenetic free regression and the correlated evolution tests.

Conclusions

Three pollen shape and ornamentation types were found in Ficus, which show characteristics related to passive or active pollination mode. Thus, the pollen shape is very likely shaped by pollination mode in this unique obligate mutualism.  相似文献

Five young adults received audio biofeedback training to reduce trapezius EMG levels while they engaged in reading in an office, seated at a table. A multiple-baseline-across subjects design was employed in two separate studies. After training, all subjects demonstrated reduced EMG levels while reading in a home or library setting. The first study suggested that subjects reduced EMG levels by minimizing movements and altering their postures; the second study systematically demonstrated changes in such behavior, which was correlated with EMG levels. The data provide evidence that EMG biofeedback resulted in response generalization across several motoric classes, and in stimulus generalization from the training setting to the natural environment. The importance of assessing generalization is discussed.  相似文献

Intervertebral disc mechanics are affected by both disc shape and disc degeneration, which in turn each affect the other; disc mechanics additionally have a role in the etiology of disc degeneration. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a favored tool to investigate these relationships, but limited data for intervertebral disc 3D shape has forced the use of simplified or single-subject geometries, with the effect of inter-individual shape variation investigated only in specialized studies. Similarly, most data on disc shape variation with degeneration is based on 2D mid-sagittal images, which incompletely define 3D shape changes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify inter-individual disc shape variation in 3D, classify this variation into independently-occurring modes using a statistical shape model, and identify correlations between disc shape and degeneration. Three-dimensional disc shapes were obtained from MRI of 13 human male cadaver L3L4 discs. An average disc shape and four major modes of shape variation (representing 90% of the variance) were identified. The first mode represented disc axial area and was significantly correlated to degeneration (R2=0.44), indicating larger axial area in degenerate discs. Disc height variation occurred in three distinct modes, each also involving non-height variation. The statistical shape model provides an average L3L4 disc shape for FEA that is fully defined in 3D, and makes it convenient to generate a set of shapes with which to represent aggregate inter-individual variation. Degeneration grade-specific shapes can also be generated. To facilitate application, the model is included in this paper?s supplemental content.  相似文献

Humans can learn and store multiple visuomotor mappings (dual-adaptation) when feedback for each is provided alternately. Moreover, learned context cues associated with each mapping can be used to switch between the stored mappings. However, little is known about the associative learning between cue and required visuomotor mapping, and how learning generalises to novel but similar conditions. To investigate these questions, participants performed a rapid target-pointing task while we manipulated the offset between visual feedback and movement end-points. The visual feedback was presented with horizontal offsets of different amounts, dependent on the targets shape. Participants thus needed to use different visuomotor mappings between target location and required motor response depending on the target shape in order to “hit” it. The target shapes were taken from a continuous set of shapes, morphed between spiky and circular shapes. After training we tested participants performance, without feedback, on different target shapes that had not been learned previously. We compared two hypotheses. First, we hypothesised that participants could (explicitly) extract the linear relationship between target shape and visuomotor mapping and generalise accordingly. Second, using previous findings of visuomotor learning, we developed a (implicit) Bayesian learning model that predicts generalisation that is more consistent with categorisation (i.e. use one mapping or the other). The experimental results show that, although learning the associations requires explicit awareness of the cues’ role, participants apply the mapping corresponding to the trained shape that is most similar to the current one, consistent with the Bayesian learning model. Furthermore, the Bayesian learning model predicts that learning should slow down with increased numbers of training pairs, which was confirmed by the present results. In short, we found a good correspondence between the Bayesian learning model and the empirical results indicating that this model poses a possible mechanism for simultaneously learning multiple visuomotor mappings.  相似文献

We investigated the presence of a key feature of human word comprehension in a five year old Border Collie: the generalization of a word referring to an object to other objects of the same shape, also known as shape bias. Our first experiment confirmed a solid history of word learning in the dog, thus making it possible for certain object features to have become central in his word comprehension. Using an experimental paradigm originally employed to establish shape bias in children and human adults we taught the dog arbitrary object names (e.g. dax) for novel objects. Two experiments showed that when briefly familiarized with word-object mappings the dog did not generalize object names to object shape but to object size. A fourth experiment showed that when familiarized with a word-object mapping for a longer period of time the dog tended to generalize the word to objects with the same texture. These results show that the dog tested did not display human-like word comprehension, but word generalization and word reference development of a qualitatively different nature compared to humans. We conclude that a shape bias for word generalization in humans is due to the distinct evolutionary history of the human sensory system for object identification and that more research is necessary to confirm qualitative differences in word generalization between humans and dogs.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained on a visual discrimination, a task using a TV monitor. Two different types of stimuli appeared as pictures on the TV screen, one was a feeder used in their home cages and the other a coffee mug. One group of the pigeons was trained to peck the screen when the feeder appeared on it, while the other group was trained to peck the screen when the mug appeared. The feeder was considered to be a `familiar object' but the mug an `unfamiliar object' for the subjects. After training, to peck the familiar object, the subjects showed generalization to unusual view pictures of the object, but they did not show such generalization after training to peck the unfamiliar object. These results suggest that view point consistency is limited to familiar objects in pigeons.  相似文献

Currently two hypotheses exist as to how an insect's CNS stores and compares learned visual images: storage as a photograph-like eidetic image (template-hypothesis), and storage as a set of features extracted by the visual system (parameter-hypothesis). An important criterion for deciding between these two hypotheses is the generalization of a learned pattern to other patterns. We therefore trained bees to patterns presented on a vertical screen and to discriminate between either a black triangle and a ring-pattern (training A, B), or a black disc and an outline triangle (training C), and then tested for a possible generalization of the learned patterns to a variety of other patterns. Several results obtained that way (e.g. the transfer test, column 2 in Fig. 1a, or Fig. 3) seem to indicate that the bees indeed do generalize a learned pattern to other patterns, and hence appear to support the parameter-hypothesis. Quite unexpectedly, however, it turned out that the same results can also be explained by a template matching mechanism. In simulating an image matching strategy we used a similarity function that had been successfully applied to pattern discrimination data obtained in tetheredly flying fruitflies, Drosophila. This similarity function assumes that the insect evaluates the ratio between the overlap of an actual retinal image with the stored template and the total area of the actual retinal image (see Fig. 5). It is able to describe the bulk of our data. Interestingly, the training situation appears to have an influence on the weight attributed by the bee to different parts of the template. Such a situation-dependent weighting might indicate a first stage of parameter extraction.Abbreviations TR + positive training shape - TR negative training shape  相似文献

Identification of butterfly species is essential because they are directly associated with crop plants used for human and animal consumption. However, the widely used reliable methods for butterfly identification are not efficient due to complicated butterfly shapes. We previously developed a novel shape recognition method that uses branch length similarity (BLS) entropy, which is a simple branching network consisting of a single node and branches. The method has been successfully applied to recognize battle tanks and characterize human faces with different emotions. In the present study, we used the BLS entropy profile (an assemble of BLS entropies) as an input feature in a feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network to identify butterfly species according to their shapes when viewed from different angles (for vertically adjustable angle, θ = ± 10°, ± 20°, …, ± 60° and for horizontally adjustable angle, φ = ± 10°, ± 20°, …, ± 60°). In the field, butterfly images are generally captured obliquely by camera due to butterfly alignment and viewer positioning, which generates various shapes for a given specimen. To generate different shapes of a butterfly when viewed from different angles, we projected the shapes captured from top-view to a plane rotated through angles θ and φ. Projected shapes with differing θ and φ values were used as training data for the neural network and other shapes were used as test data. Experimental results showed that our method successfully identified various butterfly shapes. In addition, we briefly discuss extension of the method to identify more complicated images of different butterfly species.  相似文献

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a disorder of the patellofemoral (PF) joint in which abnormal tracking is often cited as a factor in pain development. PF tracking is partially dependent on passive stabilizers (ex: PF geometry). Relations amongst PFPS, PF tracking, and contact mechanics are poorly understood. In-vivo investigation of passive PF joint stabilizers including PF tracking, contact mechanics, cartilage thickness, and patellar shape will allow structural characterization of the PF joint and may highlight differences associated with PFPS. This study examined the role that passive stabilizers play in PFPS (n=10) versus healthy subjects (n=10). PF tracking (contact area centroid migration), cartilage thickness, shape, congruence, and contact patterns were quantified using magnetic resonance imaging during isometric loading at 15°, 30°, and 45° of knee flexion. Distinct relationships were identified between patellar shape and tracking and contact, particularly at low flexion (15–30°). Healthy subjects exhibited distinct PF tracking and contact patterns related to Type I patella shape (80%) with increasing total contact area (p<0.001) and proximal centroid migration (15–30° p=0.012; 30–45° p<0.001) for increasing knee angles. PFPS subjects deviated from these patterns at low flexion, demonstrating higher total contact area than healthy subjects (p=0.046 at 15°), lack of proximal centroid migration (15–30°), and more Type II (30%) and III (20%) patella shapes. This study highlights a new finding that patellar shape combined with low degrees of flexion (15–30°) may be important to consider, as this is where PFPS tracking and contact patterns deviate from healthy.  相似文献

Constant-force isometric muscle training is useful for increasing the maximal strength , rehabilitation and work-fatigue assessment. Earlier studies have shown that muscle fatigue characteristics can be used for evaluating muscle endurance limit. Study Objective: To predict muscle endurance time during isometric task using frequency spectrum characteristics of surface electromyography signals along with analysis of frequency spectrum shape and scale during fatigue accumulation. Method: Thirteen subjects performed isometric lateral raise at 60% MVC of deltoid (lateral) till endurance limit. Time windowed sEMG frequency spectrum was modelled using 2-parameter distributions namely Gamma and Weibull for spectrum analysis and endurance prediction. Results: Gamma distribution provided better spectrum fitting (P < 0.001) than Weibull distribution. Spectrum Distribution demonstrated no change in shape but shifted towards lower frequency with increase of magnitude at characteristic mode frequency. Support Vector Regression based algorithm was developed for endurance time estimation using features derived from fitted frequency spectrum. Time taken till endurance limit for acquired dataset 38.53 ± 17.33 s (Mean ± Standard Deviation) was predicted with error of 0.029 ± 4.19 s . R-square: 0.956, training and test sets RMSE was calculated as 3.96 and 4.29 s respectively. The application of the algorithm suggested that model required 70% of sEMG signal from maximum time of endurance for high prediction accuracy. Conclusion: Endurance Limit prediction algorithm was developed for quantification of endurance time for optimizing isometric training and rehabilitation. Our method could help personalize and change conventional training method of same weight and duration for all subjects with optimized training parameters, based upon individual sEMG activity.  相似文献

Going round in circles: shape effects in the Ebbinghaus illusion   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The Ebbinghaus illusion has traditionally been considered as either a sensory or a cognitive illusion, or some combination of these two. Cognitive contrast explanations take support from the way the illusion varies with the degree of shape similarity between the test and inducing elements; we show, however, that contour interaction explanations may account for this result too. We therefore tested these alternative theories by measuring the illusion with different test shapes as well as different inducer shapes, in all combinations. We found that for angular or hexagonal test shapes there is no similarity effect, and for some shape combinations there is no significant illusion, in contradiction to both of the traditional hypotheses. Instead, we suggest that an integrated model of visual processing is needed to account for the illusion.  相似文献

Recent studies have determined a seemingly consistent feature of able-bodied level ground walking, termed the roll-over shape, which is the effective rocker (cam) shape that the lower limb system conforms to between heel contact and contralateral heel contact during walking (first half of the gait cycle). The roll-over shape has been found to be largely unaffected by changes in walking speed, load carriage, and shoe heel height. However, it is unclear from previous studies whether persons are controlling their lower limb systems to maintain a consistent roll-over shape or whether this finding is a byproduct of their attempt to keep ankle kinematic patterns similar during the first half of the gait cycle. We measured the ankle–foot roll-over shapes and ankle kinematics of eleven able-bodied subjects while walking on rocker shoes of different radii. We hypothesized that the ankle flexion patterns during single support would change to maintain a similar roll-over shape. We also hypothesized that with decrease in rocker shoe radii, the difference in ankle flexion between the end and beginning of single support would decrease. Our results supported these hypotheses. Ankle kinematics were changed significantly during walking with the different rocker shoe radii (p<0.001), while ankle–foot roll-over shape radii (p=0.146) and fore–aft position (p=0.132) were not significantly affected. The results of this study have direct implications for designers of ankle–foot prostheses, orthoses, walking casts/boots, and rocker shoes. The results may also be relevant to researchers studying control of human movements.  相似文献
