Females and parental males commonly discriminate among potential mates. Male discrimination is often assumed to be lacking in species with non-parental males. However, male competition in these species may favour male discrimination since indiscriminate matings may waste time and energy. Males in such species should attempt to maximize their fertilization rates; females in such species should mate only with males able to enhance female reproductive success. Males of the Socorro isopod, Thermosphaeroma thermophilum, engage in precopulatory guarding, preferring larger, more fecund females and females near a reproductive moult. Males also guard post-moult females. Large males prevail when usurping or resisting usurpation, and guard large females. Females may choose mates by selective resistance to insemination attempts.  相似文献

Summary The mapping of the compound eyes onto the visual neuropils and the cell types in the lamina and the lobula complex of Bibionidae (Diptera) were studied by means of extracellular cobalt injections and Golgi impregnations. Dorsal and ventral eyes in males map into separate dorsal-and ventral neuropils up to the level of the lobula complex. The dorsal-eye lamina is unilayered, while the ventral-eye lamina in males and the lamina in females are multilayered: layers A and C are invaded by en-passant terminals of long visual fibres, layer B by the terminals of short visual fibres. Long visual fibres have a short and a long terminal in the ventral medulla with terminal specialisations in three distinct layers. Only one type of receptor ending exists in the dorsal medulla, the terminal branches of which are restricted to one layer only. Arrays of contralateral neurones are found in the medial part of the dorsal lobula, which receives input from the zone of binocular vision of the ipsilateral dorsal eye, and in the posterior dorsal lobula and lobula plate. The dorsal lobula plate contains large tangential neurones, the dendritic arborisations of which are revealed by cobalt injection into the thoracic ganglia. The divided brain of male bibionids offers the opportunity to investigate separately the nervous systems involved in sex-specific visually guided flight behaviour and in general visually guided flight control.  相似文献

The proportions of the different bibionid genera are used to estimate the temperature changes between the Late Eocene and the Late Miocene in Western Europe. The genus Plecia is a good indicator of the warm Cenozoic palaeoclimates. We propose a new approach for the estimation of the value of the palaeoclimatic information that could be obtained by actualistic inferences using extinct taxa. Other taxa (i.e. Mastotermitidae) that could appear a priori better palaeoclimatic indicators result to be less sensitive than bibionids to temperature changes. Intraspecific and intrageneric morphological diversity is explored for the genera Bibio, Penthetria and Plecia, showing the difficulties to characterize the fossil bibionid species.  相似文献

A study of the Great Argus pheasant Argusianus argus is described. Cleared display sites are owned each by a single male which calls to attract females, while other adult and subadult males maintain no such sites. Evidence is presented to show that vocal differences between males at display sites are slight and unstable, and are therefore unlikely to be used by females in mate choice. No evidence was obtained to suggest that females wander from display site to site and mate with the best male chosen by visual comparison of subtle plumage variation, although the classical assumption has been that such choice accounts for the evolution of the males' extravagant plumage. Females may by chance meet males without display sites at random in the forest, but the displays of such males are probably insufficiently stimulating to induce the female to copulate. Choice between males with or without display sites, on gross plumage and display differences, provides an alternative explanation for the evolution of the males' plumage.  相似文献

Female zebra finches may be influenced by the choices of other females when selecting mates, challenging the view that mate-choice copying should not occur in species with biparental care.  相似文献

We studied the activity and spatial distribution of the robber fly,Promachus albifacies, in a desert grassland habitat in central New Mexico. Late in the season males spent most of the daytime on or near cholla and yucca plants that had dead stems or dead flower stalks at least 1 m high. Of the three hypotheses (thermoregulation, foraging, mate encounter site) considered as explanations for this distribution, the mate-encounter-site hypothesis was best supported. Plants used by females as oviposition sites were the focus of male activity. Males perched within or near these plants and attempted copulations with females detected nearby. Most matings were initiated at these locations. Seasonal changes in male and female activity also supported the mate-encounter-site hypothesis. Early in the season, females spent little time ovipositing, and predictably, males spent little time on or near these plants. Such a mating system may be described as resource defense polygyny, since males acted aggressively toward one another at oviposition sites even when females were not present. However, the short tenure of males at these sites is suggestive of scramble competition polygyny. We discuss possible reasons why this particular mating system has evolved.  相似文献

Individual males of the grasshopper, Chorthippus brunneus, differ significantly in several components of their calling songs which are used to attract and stimulate females. In a ‘round robin’ experiment involving 21 males, the variance in male mating success was greater than expected by chance. Males were ranked and correlations were sought between this rank and characteristics of the males. A significant negative correlation was found between rank and deviation of individual males from the overall mean syllable length, indicating stabilizing selection on this character, which may be involved in species recognition. In individual competitions between males there was a tendency for the more actively singing male to mate with the female.  相似文献

Sexual selection: lessons from hermaphrodite mating systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Over the last 130 years, research has established that (a) sexualselection exists and is widespread in the plant and animal kingdoms;(b) it does not necessarily entail sexual dimorphism; even hermaphroditeshave it; (c) it does not require intelligence or a sophisticatedsense of esthetics; even tapeworms and plants choose mates;and (d) it does not require brawn or even mobility for competition;plants may compete for pollinators, and broadcast spawning invertebratesmay also compete for matings. Although discussions of sexualselection often focus on sexual dimorphism, several phenomenathat are commonly associated with sexual selection are widespreadand highly developed in hermaphrodites. These phenomena include(a) bizarre and expensive courtship and copulatory behavior,(b) multiple mating and sperm competition, (c) rapid evolutionof genitalia, (d) special structures associated with courtship, and (e) sexual polymorphism. The skewed breeding sex ratiosassociated with sequential hermaphroditism have long been recognizedas contributory to sexual selection. In many simultaneous hermaphrodites, although the sex ratio at mating may be one to one, the actualreproductive sex ratio may also be skewed, creating a high potentialfor sexual selection. Reproductive biology in hermaphroditictaxa also involves a lot of complexity unknown in dioecioustaxa, such as sex change, facultative sex allocation and conditionalreciprocity that offers opportunities to enrich our understandingof sexual selection and to test the assumptions and predictionsof theory.  相似文献

The role of fluctuating asymmetry as an indicator of fitness to females in mate choice remains controversial. Previous studies indicated that male medflies with symmetrical supra-fronto-orbital (SFO) bristles achieve relatively high mating success under laboratory conditions. Here we present data from field cage studies of wild collected medflies in Guatemala and Crete, which reveal the same association between fluctuating asymmetry in SFO bristle length and mating success as that seen in the laboratory. The experiments in Crete included males that were missing one or both of their bristles. A comparison of mating success between the three groups indicated that the mere presence of bristles did not exert a major influence. Analysis of attempted courtships suggests that the association between male mating success and FA in bristle length appears to be generated as a result of females being more likely to enter into courtships with symmetrical males, rather than through a rejection of asymmetrical males during or after it. This raises the possibility that the primary stimulus that makes a symmetrical male attractive is acting at too great a distance to depend on symmetry itself. Alternatives might include superior pheromone emissions or the occupation of a prime location within the lek.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 81 , 347–355.  相似文献

The Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa (Loew), like many polyphagous tephritids, exhibits a lek polygyny mating system, and juvenile hormone levels and adult diet are known to have important positive effects on male sexual success. Among the potential components of this success are male lek tenure and female response to the sexual signals of lekking males. Male A. suspensa where submitted to four different treatments: (M+P+) application of juvenile hormone analog, methoprene (M) and sugar and hydrolyzed yeast as adult food; (M+P) application of M and sugar as adult food; (MP+) no application of M and sugar and hydrolyzed yeast as adult food; and (MP) no application of M and sugar as adult food. M+P+ males initiated and participated more in aggregations, mated more frequently, and occupied the lek centers more often. They also had fewer unsuccessful mounting attempts than males in all the other treatments. M+P+ males also emitted pheromones and acoustically signaled more often and attracted more females than males in other treatments. Male sexual performance was improved due to methoprene, protein supply, and the interaction of methoprene and protein for most of the parameters. Since the success of the sterile insect technique (SIT), a commonly employed technique to control pest tephritids, requires the release of males that can form leks, engage in agonistic sexual interactions, and attract females, these positive effects of protein and methoprene may substantially improve SIT programs.  相似文献

Exechia and Bibio have retained several plesiomorphic groundplan features of Diptera and Bibionomorpha, including a fully exposed and sclerotized head capsule, the transverse undivided labrum, the absence of movable premandibles, and undivided mandibles without combs. The fusion of the hypostomal bridge with the head capsule and largely reduced antennae are derived features shared by both taxa. The absence of teeth at the anterior hypostomal margin is a potential autapomorphy of Bibionomorpha. A basal position of Anisopodidae is suggested by a number of plesiomorphies retained in this family. Apomorphies of Bibionomorpha excluding Anisopodidae are the reduction of tentorial elements, the partial fusion of the labrum and clypeus, one-segmented antennae, the absence of a separate submental sclerite, the loss of the labial palpus, and the reduction of the pharyngeal filter apparatus. Head structures of Bibio are largely unmodified. The subprognathous orientation is one of few autapomorphic features. In contrast, the mouthparts of Exechia are highly modified in correlation with the specialized food uptake. The rasping counterrotating movements of maxillae and mandibles with teeth oriented in opposite directions are carried out by strongly developed extensors and flexors of the paired mouthparts. The modified labium mechanically supports the “drill head” formed by the mandibles und maxillae. The necessary stability of the head capsule is provided by the hypostomal bridge which also compensates the far-reaching reduction of the tentorium.  相似文献

As sexual selection is a coevolutionary process between males and females, various morphological and behavioral traits have evolved in each sex. In the tetranychid mites Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. kanzawai Kishida (Acari: Tetranychidae), males can mate repeatedly, whereas females normally accept only the first copulation for fertilization. Since early times, it had been reported that males engage in precopulatory mate guarding and combat against conspecifics for females to enhance their reproductive success. On the other hand, it was believed that females do not have opportunities to choose their mates. In the last 10 or so years, however, several new findings related to mating behavior were reported. Some of the findings reinforce our established knowledge, whereas some of them explode it. Here, I review the mating behavior of T. urticae and T. kanzawai by incorporating recent findings and then propose a new direction for future research.  相似文献

Relative reproductive success of male bicolor damselfish, Eupomacentrus partitus, was measured as the number of egg batches obtained per week per male during a 14-month field study. Large and consistent differences in spawning success, observed in seven colonies containing 23 males, demonstrated that mating was non-random. Various physical and behavioural characteristics of males were also monitored. Significant correlations (P<0.05) were found between reproductive success and four variables: frequency of courtship, inter- and intraspecific aggression, and total length. The importance of other factors such as size and location of male territories and time allotment to various activities was also considered. The interactions between these variables, as well as preliminary observations of spawning, suggest that intersexual selection, that is female choice of mates, is the dominant process in sexual selection in this species.  相似文献

Mate choice and mate competition can both influence the evolution of sexual isolation between populations. Assortative mating may arise if traits and preferences diverge in step, and, alternatively, mate competition may counteract mating preferences and decrease assortative mating. Here, we examine potential assortative mating between populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura that have experimentally evolved under either increased (‘polyandry’) or decreased (‘monogamy’) sexual selection intensity for 100 generations. These populations have evolved differences in numerous traits, including a male signal and female preference traits. We use a two males: one female design, allowing both mate choice and competition to influence mating outcomes, to test for assortative mating between our populations. Mating latency shows subtle effects of male and female interactions, with females from the monogamous populations appearing reluctant to mate with males from the polyandrous populations. However, males from the polyandrous populations have a significantly higher probability of mating regardless of the female's population. Our results suggest that if populations differ in the intensity of sexual selection, effects on mate competition may overcome mate choice.  相似文献

The male postabdomen and the internal parts of the male genital system of Bibio marci (Bibionomorpha) were examined and reconstructed 3‐dimensionally. Several features differ from the presumptive dipteran groundplan. The bases of the gonopods are fused with each other and with tergite IX. The penis is not tube‐shaped and only sclerotized on the ventral side. The vasa deferentia are S‐shaped, and two pairs of accessory glands are present. In contrast to these characteristics, the arrangement of the internal parts is probably close to the ancestral condition. With its specific shape, the penis is well suited for the transfer of a spermatophore. The dorsal sclerite of the copulatory organ probably represents the medially fused parameres. A cladistic analysis of 27 characters of the postabdomen yielded two most parsimonious trees, with the strict consensus as follows: Nannochoristidae (outgroup) + (Culicidae [Culicomorpha] + ((Nymphomyiidae + (Tipulidae + Trichoceridae)) + (Tabanidae [Brachycera] + (Bibionidae, Anisopodidae, Axymyiidae [Bibionomorpha])))). Potential synapomorphies of Bibionomorpha (including Axymyiidae) and Brachycera are the fusion of sternum IX with the gonocoxites, the fusion of the parameres forming the dorsal sclerite and the presence of an entire series of postabdominal muscles (M4, M20, M23, M26, M27, M31, M35 and M37). The results of the analysis are preliminary as it is based on a single‐character system with a limited taxon sampling. However, the main result – a clade Bibionomorpha + Brachycera – is fully compatible with current hypotheses on dipteran phylogeny.  相似文献

Three extraction methods were compared for the recovery of bibionid larvae from grassland soil samples. Only wet-sieving followed by flotation in a saturated salt solution yielded bibionids. No larvae were recovered either with modified Tullgren funnels or by slow immersion of soil cores into a saturated salt solution. The efficiency with which larval bibionid populations can be estimated is poor. Generally, smaller cores yielded more larvae per volume of soil. Most bibionids were found in the top 4 cm of soil. It is concluded that 10 cm diameter and 6–8 cm deep soil cores are an acceptable compromise between efficiency and sampling effort but sample size will largely be determined by the resources available for processing of samples.  相似文献

Records of crop damage caused by Bibionidae are reviewed together with evidence for their beneficial activities, natural enemies and control methods. Bibionids are sporadic and infrequent pests. Although grass and cereals are most vulnerable, a wide range of crops is attacked. Damage is most severe after grass or when plants are under stress. The presence of organic matter during oviposition increases the likelihood of damaging populations. Many natural enemies exist but their impact on adult or larval populations has not been quantified. Given the pattern of attacks and lack of approved insecticides, cultural control methods are more appropriate than chemical. The role of adult bibionids in pollination and of larvae involved in soil processes could be of greater importance than any damage caused by the group.  相似文献
